XP problems on new build/install - services closing on start-up & other problems

Q: XP problems on new build/install - services closing on start-up & other problems

About 3 or 4 days ago I installed a new motherboard (Gigabyte MA785GMT-UD2H), processor (Athlon X2), RAM (4GB Crucial), HDD (so it's essentially a new PC). After installing XP Home and then gradually installing updates (SP3 is installed) and my usual assortment of programmes and utilities (nothing too out of the ordinary - iTunes, browsers, Office, spyware utilities, Security Essentials), my PC now has a number of glitchy problems whenever I boot it up at the beginning of the day. I can get past them by rebooting roughly 4-5 times; eventually it will run smoothly. I've kept notes of some of the most recurrent problems:

- Generic Win32 service closes on start-up. Result is frequently that when I try to open My Documents or My Computer, the taskbar and desktop icons disappear for a few seconds, then reappear. Often after a few attempts my desired folder will eventually open.

- AntiMalware Service Executable closes on start-up. Result is Security Essentials deciding it cannot update and thinks it's out of date.

- ATI Catalyst Control Centre (for the onboard GPU) closes on start-up. No noticeable effects.

- Google Chrome (my preferred browser) browser windows crash - i.e. I get the 'aw snap!' page, the whole thing doesn't close. This occurs even after disabling extensions, so they do not seem to be the cause.

...And less frequently, I have also had the following happen:

- On boot-up, a window pops up with: 'Procedure entry point Md5final could not be located in the dynamic link library ADVAPI32.dll'

- Occasional BSOD. I don't have the exact error codes, but once or twice it has said BAD_POOL_CALLER.

- msiexec.exe closes during installation of programmes.

- After scheduling and performing a chkdsk, it deleted comsnap.dll and update.inf from something, I didn't see what before it finished. When it booted up, I moved the mouse and received BSOD, but upon reboot everything was fine.

- I've received a message on boot-up once or twice that I've not written down, but refers to something about the registry log, perhaps being modified in some way? I'm not sure about this one.

...apart from that my new system works fine

------

So what all this amounts to I have not the slightest clue. I've googled these problems individually, lots comes up about problems with Windows Update, I've tried disabling the automatic ones, manually downloading updates, and then re-enabling, to no avail. Somewhere I saw a recommendation to reseat the RAM - did this, PC booted up fine, but then when I switched on the next morning, back to the same old problems. If anyone has any advice at all I would be extremely grateful - I've never had anything like this happen so close to a brand new build and install. Spyware or malware is most definitely not the cause, the first thing I do when I install XP is make sure I'm protected in that department. Again, this happened within one day of my initial install, and again, if I reboot a few times, these problems go away.

Any help at all will be immensely appreciated. Please let me know what information I can provide to assist a diagnosis.

Many thanks,
Ed

Preferred Solution: XP problems on new build/install - services closing on start-up & other problems

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Apparently it won't let me edit my post anymore. Just to update, I rebooted after posting all this to see what happened, the first thing I did was open a Word (2007) document, and upon opening I received BSOD with message PAGE_FAULT_IN_NON_PAGED_AREA. Rebooted again and all seems normal.

Hello.

I am using Windows XP Home Edition Version 2002 SP2.

I have two user accounts, neither of which were password protected.

Recently I used msconfig to shut down some start up programs and services I did not want or need (so I thought). Now when I rebooted the first time everything was fine, except for that it wanted a password when I switched users. I had not set passwords and would log in without one when rebooted. I went and set passwords for the user accounts which works when switching users most of the time. Other times the passwords for both accounts are wrong.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

I have recently bought all the necessary parts for my new build. This is my first build from scratch. I have already upgraded computers with problems I fixed by myself. Thus my point: I'm not a newbie. Don't ask me if I did something basic or tell me to do something basic, unless you believe I'd actually miss it after 15+ hours total working on this computer. (By basic I mean make sure it's connected in right places, if plugs are secure, missing hardware, etc.)

My problem may sound simple at first. My PSU powers on, but my computer doesn't. The PSU is working giving the correct amount of watts needed for my PC (350+ recommended, 500 delivered), but when i press the hard-drive-power-on button (mentally fatigued as it's late right now so I don't remember the correct term), nothing powers on. All of the fans, including the PSU's fans (has two fans), do not power not, not even for a quick second.

I have tested my PSU, outlet, and power cords. I have had my motherboard RMA'd as DOA and received a new one. I am sure there was no electrostatic discharge, at least not on my new board or any other hardware I currently have. I am also sure there is no third party hardware stopping my computer from starting. My PSU worked on my older computer when I was testing it so I think it is working. What is confounding me and making me unsure as to if my PSU is really working is that if the power is going through the motherboard and the motherboard i... Read more

If I could get some help on this I'd be much obliged - my computer is acting up pretty weirdly.

The first thing that I noticed was wrong is that my internet connection wasn't working correctly - the icon in the system tray would show that I was connected to the internet, but if I opened a browser I'd get nothing. I started looking into a few things and noticed that the Windows Firewall / ICS service wasn't started. When I tried to start that, it told me it couldn't locate the files (Error 2) to do so. I googled fixes for that, came upon System File Checker and Error Checking in windows. The former asks me for a Windows XP Disk, but doesn't accept it when I use one, and the latter simply tells me that "Windows cannot complete the system check". I unfortunately don't have any usable system restore points. When I start windows, I immediately get a popup saying "The webpage you requested is not available offline. Would you like to connect?" I also get error messages for Symantec and Google Desktop as soon as Windows loads.

Can someone tell me what is going on here? None of this was happening just a few days ago. I've run several antivirus programs, there's nothing infecting my drives. I could really use some help here, thanks.

<<The former asks me for a Windows XP Disk, but doesn't accept it when I use one, and the latter simply tells me that "Windows cannot complete the system check".>>It's asking for a MS XP install CD...and it must reflect the same SP-level that is on the system, it will not run if the CD reflects an earlier level.Example: I have SP3 installed on both my desktops...to run SFC, I must use a CD that includes SP3 in the XP install package. I accomplish this by slipstreaming/updating my original XP CD, using nLite.BC has a guide you may be interested in, http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/slipstreaming-windows-xp-to-create-bootable-cd/<<...I immediately get a popup saying "The webpage you requested is not available offline. Overcome by hitting the button to try again, IME.As for Symantec and Google Desktop...perhaps those are damaged and need to be uninstalled/reinstalled...hard to be definitive without the error messages being known.IMO, none of these sound like malware issues.Louis

Hi, I suggest a memory Test as bad memory can cause this issue.

If you have more than one RAM module installed, try starting computer with one RAM stick at a time.NOTE Keep in mind, the manual check listed above is always superior to the software check, listed below. DO NOT proceed with memtest, if you can go with option AB. If you have only one RAM stick installed...
...run memtest...
1. Download - Pre-Compiled Bootable ISO (.zip)
2. Unzip downloaded memtest86+-....iso.zip file.
3. Inside, you'll find memtest86+-....iso file.
4. Download, and install ImgBurn: http://www.imgburn.com/
Do not install the optional Software (Toolbar) unless You really want it.
5. Insert blank CD into your CD drive.
6. Open ImgBurn, and click on Write image file to disc
7. Click on Browse for a file... icon:
8. Locate memtest86+-....iso file, and click Open button.
9. Click on ImgBurn green arrow to start burning bootable memtest86 CD:
10. Once the CD is created, boot from it, and memtest will automatically start to run.
The running program will look something like this depending on the size and number of ram modules installed:
It's recommended to run 5-6 passes. Each pass contains very same 8 tests.
This will show the progress of the test. It can take a while. Be patient, or leave it running overnight.
The following image is the test results area:

Have you went into bios and set it up? Time date etc,,,. With most
things you can set to auto. But say your video card is agp, you must
tell bios that, or say your harddrive is a sata drive, by default bios
will be set to Raid, you must set it to Ide, that would be the biggy.
Windows will not install it you have it set to raid. I think there is a
a option to select whether or not you are using a pci-e video card.
Take your time, and go through bios.

Hi hiltinc,

It seems the problem is Windows XP SP2's support for PCI-Express expansion slots.
You need to have a version of XP with SP2.

Perhaps entering the BIOS and disabling the PCI devices will help?

Or:

You could try creating a new CD with XP/SP2 slipstreamed into it:

I recently completed a fresh install of Windows 10 Pro.

I had a windows update problem, most specifically with Cumulative Update for Windows 10 for x64-based Systems (KB3185611) - Error 0x80004005.

I eventually was able to download it form Windows Catalog, and install it manually. Windows Update indicates I am up to date, but a problem was never resolved.

Since I first did the install, I noticed that under Settings > Personalization > Start, two settings were missing: "Show More Tiles" and "Occasionally Show Suggestions in Start"

Also, while I can extend my start menu to the normal width (tho not as wide as with the benefit of the "Show More Tiles" setting), I can only add tiles "three wide", as shown in the attachment.

From what I understand, Show More Tiles was added back in the November 2015, 1511 cumulative update, but I don't know what, if any, the problem getting the updates had to do with it.

Could any of my notification settings be affecting this?

Hi, what's your current build number?
(Windows key + R, type winver)

I'm using latest 1607 anniversary - bear in mind MS keeps making changes to the start menu (yet another reason I never use it personally!).

Your 2nd screenshot does show 'show more tiles'. This is what I have:

Some differences suggest you have an older version of Windows.
If you have build 1511, upgrading could deal with any issues, assuming no new ones appear- as some have found!

Current tile size options appear to be based on x2. (I recall when x3 was available).

Quarantine everything it finds

Then...
Please follow the Windows Update Posting Instructions and post the requested data

If the file is too large (8MB compressed), remove the older CBSPersist cab files until the final file is below the limit - you can always post them separately after zipping them. (the forum doesn't allow the upload of bare CAB files, for a number of reasons)

Also, post the C:\Windows\Windowsupdate.log file

It's the strangest thing. Sometimes when closing IE 6, it starts opening multiple (sometimes hundreds) NEW IE windows. I've run virus and adware detection. I'm running XP Home through a Netgear router. Windows Firewall is turned on. It only happens sometimes, and at it's worst, it requires a hard shut down to overcome. Very disturbing. Any ideas? A:Dell 3252 having audio problems and start menu problems

You appear to have a Dell Inspiron 3252 desktop.
What's the exact "service tag" number and "express service code" number on yours?

It appears to have Realtek ALC3600-CG 5.1 channel high definition audio.
HERE is the Windows 10 64-bit driver for it.

You should consider getting rid of the IObit-related apps that are installed in that desktop.

Hi Room this is my first post!

Must say its really great to find a good IT forum on the net.

Anyway I have just recently purchased Win XP Pro SP2 OEM with a new Hard Drive (200GB Seagate). Unfortunately I seem to be having one problem after another.

One of my problems is whenever I close a program it remains in my Task List using up some of my system memory. I have carried out several windows updates in the hope that one would contain a fix for the problem, but no luck. I am at the moment running SFC to see if that will sort the problem.

Has anyone got any ideas as to how this problem can be resolved?

Thanks in Advance

Hi

I hope I'm placing this in the right section, if not, then could someone tell me where to put it and I'll post it again.

I've got a Samsung RV510 laptop with Windows 7 HP 64 bit.

About 2 weeks ago, I was watching a Youtube video, had Spotify and Facebook open too, and my computer suddenly went all BSOD on me.

I turned it off and on again. It came up with a message like 'A problem has occurred whilst loading up your computer, what would you like to do?' I chose 'launch startup repair', which takes a couple seconds, then I choose the other option of 'start Windows normally'. I could get onto Safe Mode. Sometimes it would say 'Operating System not found.'

The computer will then load normally and I can be on it fine.

However, I then started to get Norton Confidential and Shockwave Flash crashes in Google Chrome. I disabled Norton Confidential and thus didn't get that error anymore. Shockwave Flash however did still occur as disabling it means I can't watch Youtube videos and do some other stuff. Sometimes my screen would go blank, and it looks like Chrome refreshed itself due to some problem.

I then used Norton Power Eraser (I have Norton Internet Security 2011 otherwise, and I did many live updates and scans to see if there was anything there, but nothing) to see if there were any problems. It came up with one file that was a possible threat which was msvcrt.dll so I did as it recommended and deleted it. I restarted the computer and now I can't it won't go past the Win... Read more

A:Can't start up my computer. (Driver problems, BSOD, other problems)

First rule out infection. Try booting into Safe Mode with Networking to run a full scan with Malwarebytes.

If this fails download, burn to CD or write to flash stick Microsoft Standalone System Sweeper, boot it to run a full scan.

Boot into System Recovery Options using the WIn7 DVD Repair console (option two) and run Startup Repair repeatedly from the list.

If this fails, open a Command Prompt to SFC -SCANNOW Run in Command Prompt at Boot.
If it finds System files to repair it may need to be run several times.

If probs persist, next run System Restore from the Recovery Tools list.

If these all fail, boot into free Partition Wizard bootable CD. Make sure Win7 or it's 100mb Boot partition (preferred) are marked Active. Then click on HD to highlight it, from Disk tab select Rebuild MBR, Apply, reboot. If Win7 doesn't start, try same again with Active flag moved to Win7 partition itself. Next again try running Startup Repair 3 Separate Times with Active flag in original position and then Win7 partition.

If all fails, copy out any needed files using Win7 DVD or REpair CD: Copy & Paste - in Windows Recovery Console

Then run full Factory Recovery from its partition at boot, Recovery Disks or image you've saved, or the Win7 installation DVD following these steps to get a perfect reinstall: Reinstalling Windows 7

If you get it started or recover using factory image, I would follow these steps to Clean up factory bloatware replacing bloated Norton with free Mi... Read more

I'm fixing a friends laptop - an ancient Toshiba Equium A110-252 (PSAB2E) which was riddled with trojans and viruses and formatting was the only route.

Reinstalled with windows XP (and service packs 1-3), reinstalled the drivers for sound, touch pad etc but can't get the wireless to work!

The card doesn't show up in device manager, which I've been led to believe means it needs a bios update. I read on a website that i needed to update to a version 2.4 or later, but one doesn't seem to exist for windows XP.

I'm struggling, and would like to get this done! Any suggestions please post or email. If you could point me in the way of the correct drivers/bios updates to get it working I would be very appreciative!

I recently had a lightweight gateway that stopped checking in with ATA.  I found the ATA services not running, and couldn't start them.  I tried uninstalling the lightweight gateway from the server, but the uninstall failed.  Attempted to
run the setup again, but it won't run because it sees that it's already installed.
Per the suggestion here: https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/lync/en-US/e54b04aa-10b0-4ef8-8aad-4d3fd5bc75ec/i-cannot-uninstall-ata-gateway-after-installing-from-the-zip-file?forum=mata
I searched the registry for anything mentioning Advanced Threat Analytics and removed it, and ran the setup again.  The setup didn't seem to complete successfully, and the services still won't start.  However ATA doesn't show up in add/remove programs
anymore, and I don't see any registry keys under HKLM\Software which contain 'Advanced Threat Analytics'.
What's the best way to clean this up and get it working again?
Also, we get ATA as part of our EMS subscription.  Does that subscription include Tech support for ATA?

On switching on the machine the screen goes to a black and white page of notes were windows 7 is highlighted. It invites me to return if that is to be the platform.
it starts to open and then pauses because it wants to configure downloads, presumably from the last time it was open. After 5 mins it then tells me it is reverting the changes which takes another 2 mins.
All told it takes 7 mins to get to the password option.
Once the password is put in it takes only seconds before the machine is up and running.

When I have finished ans request to close down it then wants to download 179 updates which takes ages.

I have now turned off the automatic updates facility, but this is not the answer surely?

I'm unable to use my computer now and for the past 2 days, I've tried all I can think of to fix it, and am looking for answers of what I can do to get it going again!(short of fdisking and rebuilding everything again)

I have my computer partitioned into 4 "drives" (2 on separate partitions of my primary hard drive...and 2 drive partitions on my secondary hard drive)

I run a dualboot system with Win98 on one partition of my primary HDD and W2K on the other partition of my primary HDD.

I have GoBack3 installed on both O/Ss as you are supposed to do if you use it.

The other day I shutdown everything in my Win98 partition by unchecking the startup group in Msconfig and did some video processing(and sent the data to a partition on my secondary hard drive).

My computer has NOT worked since doing the video processing. I can't boot into W2K now. It starts to load, but hangs before loading completely. And I can only boot into Win98 in Safe Mode.

What could have happened? Did shutting down GoBack on one partition and running a program while GoBack was active on the other O/S partition have cause this problem?

Help...Please!

I can not use my computer anymore except in Safe Mode! Can anyone help me?

I have a user that needs an excel document closed. When you try to open it it will tell you that it is opened but it dosn't tell you by whom so it's read only.

I'm thinking the individual who had it open has closed it since there is no name but that it's stuck in their temp files; in which case they need to reboot but we don't know who needs to reboot and we don't reboot machines on the server at night in case we need to push patches to them.

I've tried copying the files to my HD and deleting them from the server but they always reappear. I tried also to take ownership and then deleting them but that does nothing to help.

Does anyone have any other ideas that DO NOT include rebooting the server?

It may not have shut down completely. When that happens, type process explorer in search. You will see what is using memory.

If that is not running, make note of what is. One by one shut them down, try the game. When it works you know what is causing the problem.

Hi there. After lots of great help from CatByte all the memory I had lost was returned and it looked like my problems were solved. However I've noticed that the memory I got back has been going down at the same rate as before (see link to thread below). It also takes a long time to shut down with lots of boxes prompting me to close programmes that I can't see running. The laptop also freezes at least once a day (forcing me to manually switch it off) and sometimes it hybernates while I'm working (and pressing keys). The laptop's audio is still mute (Catbyte advised me to open another thread about that but then I found that my original problems persisted so I've not done that).
Thanks a lot,

It's always a good idea to have more than one browser. Firefox is solid. Are you using Internet Explorer 7? You may have already tried this but disable third party cookies in your privacy settings. This could be a spyware or trojan issue. What are you using for security?

I have an LG touch tablet laptop C1 Express Dual, running on Windows XP 2005 v2002 sp3. I've been experiencing problems shutting down. Explorer.exe is usually the one that is not shutting down properly but sometimes other programs like connectivity tray are also involved. Sometimes, there appears to be more than one explorer.exe running. What happens is that windows pop up to say that the particular program has not shut down properly. I have to click the close button before the computer can continue shutting down. The first program to pop up is explorer.exe. And then, maybe other programs, maybe another copy of explorer.exe, or it may then shut down. It doesn't always happen but most of the time. How do I resolve this? I generally have to babysit the computer as it shuts down so that I can close the windows that pop up.

BTW, if this has been answered, do point me to the link. I checked around but found nothing relevant.

Many thanks.

I just got my new laptop a few months ago, but recently it keeps playing up. Limewire (which I have now deleted) kept opening, even though I was closing it. A popup (which I assume is malware) keeps asking me to download anti-spyware software or something along those lines, and my firefox keeps randomly closing. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hey everybody,

I fixing a computer for a friend and i have just been stumped about it. It is a Gateway Laptop that has Vista. I know the major problem is that the computer will not start up when i hit the power button. It will turn on and you can hear the fans going but then it all stops and nothing happens. The screen stays blank and it doesnt even get to the Gateway start up screen. After awhile i just power it down by holding the power button. the weird thing is that sometimes it will start up just fine and get to windows explorer and you think that everything is fixed but then it will freeze up on you and you must power it down starting the start up problems up again. i have made it through a couple of virus scans and took all the viruses that it had on it and i thought that that would take care of it but it didnt. it also has the problems of some of the keys on the keyboard dont work anymore and the touchpad doesnt work at all. i keep trying to install the drivers for those again but it keeps freezing. any ideas??

Thanks

I will try to describe my problem as best as I can, few times during the day, I lose access to the internet on my machine - I cant open any web page, but if I have a video running on when this problem occrus, for example live stream, it keeps going without problems. Sometime the internet access restores alone, sometime I need to turn off / on my lan adapter or restart PC.
windows 8.1 64bit, fully updated, using mcafee antivirus
I get an error in the event log, Source: AFD - Event ID 16002
error says ( i will try to translate it literally what it says ): Closing UDP socket with local port number 58344 ( these numbers vary ) in proces 1076 ( this number is always the same ) took longer than expected. Local port number may be unavailable till the closing operation is finished. Usually this happens because of faulty behavior of LAN drivers. Make sure, you have all Windows updates, all network software of other manufacturers, LAN drivers, firewalls or other safety software products installed.
I have all windows updates installed, mcafee fully updated, i reinstalled drivers from my motherboard manufacturer webpage. I hope someone can help me, this problem really sucks

Can anyone help?
Only you can help yourself. If you do not have BIOS problems, helps only Windows clean  installation. Everything else is just a waste of time, and the result is still the same.
