Lenovo 710s Plus-13IKB - Dedicated graphics card 940MX throttling

Q: Lenovo 710s Plus-13IKB - Dedicated graphics card 940MX throttling

Hi Everyone, Hello Lenovo, I bought this laptop recently, and I was satisfied so far until i decided to play a game. I bought this one because it has a discrete graphics for a lightweight gaming. But after about 10 mins of playing any kind of 3D game (Dota, CSGO, CoH, even Telltale games) fps drops start to occur - graphics settings in the game doesnt matter (low vs high - hd vs fhd .. still the same shuttering, fps droping). After some googling and testing via gpuz i discovered that there is thermal cap at 61-62C and if the card reaches this temp, it will start downclocking - After 10 mins of playing, GPU clocked itself at somewhere around 650Mhz (default clocks are around 950MHz), reason of throttle: thermal - via gpuZ. I tried using a cooling pad, but it doesnt seem to help much. Via Nvidia Inspector: there is a thermal limit set to 61C, but u cannot modify this setting, then in the other two states of a card (i think those are the states, that are triggered by the thermal limit) there are clocks set to 405MHz - neither these are modifiable, so i think, that after some more gpu usage, it would continue dropping to 405MHz. I have tried:I have installed the newest nvidia drivers. There is no problem with power management settings (been set to max via windows power plan manager).I have also tried every power management settings in nvidia control panel (max power, adaptive etc,) - no positive results. I dont even think i got a defective model, there are other users on the internet facing the same problem with this model. There must be some settings in the bios of the GPU. it would help, if there wasnt a thermal cap set up so ridiciously low at 61C. There was similiar problem in the past with model Ideapad 510-15ISK a lot of customers complained about it and there are still a lot of active threads here about it.. But no solution was given. Users were facing downclock of their GPUs even to 405MHz - Dedicated GPU is useless then, if it is degraded to the level of Intel HD after few minutes of usage.... Thank you for your reply.

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

I just bought my 710S plus-13IKB ideapad laptop four days ago and have been facing some freezing issues while watching youtube but it's usually fine once I refresh the browser or close Chrome entirely so I didnt mind them. But just now (like 30 mins ago) it froze and nothing I click or press could work and the screen hasn't unfreeze since then. Im not good with tech stuff so I tried ctrl+alr+del and the novo bios button but both didnt work. Also to be frank, opening applications like folders etc tends to lag a little (or being a bit slow). Not sure if this is a Lenovo issue or Windows 10 issue. Please kindly advise what action I should take. It's really disappointing to see a new laptop being like this. ):

Hi community, I've got Lenovo 710S Plus recently. I read about erratic fan control and I don't know if the problem has been solved, that's it? Unless fixed, I found and issue about BIOS version, explain it: BIOS v2.52 release date: 2017-6-22BIOS v2.03 release date: 2017-6-29 That's erratic versioning name? What's the latest?~~~ [Developers only]Now, about fan control issue, I think is provocated by bad BIOS configuration because this can be fixed overriding registers in charge of fan speed and processor temperature management. Somebody has source code in order to fix it? Thanks and forgive my English level.

Hello everyone, I have recently purchased brand new Lenovo IdeaPad 710S-13IKB. It had Windows preinstalled. The problem is that there is no sound from the speakers, headset works fine. I have tried everything, even reinstalling Windows. Downloaded both drivers via Realtek, Lenovo official website, via Windows Device Manager. When something plays, the speakers indicator shows as on 'sound' screenshot attached. I am really lost here, can anyone please give soem advise. I read on some forums that there might be some conflict between Microsoft and Realtek driver versions. Perhaps, the directory to where the drivers are isntalled is not proper. Does anyone has any advice on this issue. I am ready for a remote session via TeamViewer or Supremo if possible as well. Best Regards, Dmitri

Hey Lenovo. When will you update the bios for Idepad 510-ISK?For the first 10 minutes of Gaming the perfomance is pretty good. But once the GPU temperature hits 61 Celius, there is a huge drop in FPS. It is not the Power Options, neither the NVidia Control Panel. Everything that could be done, has already been done. When will you give us a solid fix or when will you update the bios for the model range with the same GPU problems?

Hi, i have another problem - when i playing games, sometimes my FPS just dropping instantly from 80 to 20 for about 15 sec and then back to 80 FPS. My system - Ideapad 510-15ISK: Core I5 6200U, 8Gb RAM, Nvidia 940MX, 1Tb HDD. First i thouth it was just because of intence effects in some scenes. But then i mentioned it happens in static scenes too (after long time playing). Then i start digging and using GPU-Z and monitor sensors. Here's a screenshot from one of this moments:?I have 23C degrees in my room, so its not even hottest day, laptop just standing in wooden table, anything that might affect how the ventilation works. I installed all latest drivers from Lenovo site. As you can see throttling downed GPU and memory clock to 405 mhz and this throttling appears in very heavy scenes (btw i'm playing World of Warcraft which is not a very heavy game). In the regular situation after 30 min playing GPU core working on 875 mhz and memory on 800 mhz. Its a bit different from demand clocks (GPU - 1122mhz(boost - 1242) and 900mhz memory clock).?  Also i noticed GPU temperature never increase more then 62C and seems like this throttling locked on this temperature. I looked for another laptop reviews and noticed that almost in every notebook Nvidia GPU core heated even to 80-90C and this is a normal situation. Is there anyway how i can solve this problem ? Thank you.

Hi. Fps is decreasing while playing games when the gpu heat reaches the 62C. And gpu heat cannot be higher because i think its locked. Lots of people asked this question in here but no one give a proper solution. We all know that is locked on bios. Can you fix this. Because we can't play games properly.

Hello Lenovo.I'm writing on forum, as many has done before, but nothing is changing. I own ideapad 510ISK with GT 940MX dedicated GPU. The problem is that the throttling of GPU starts at 61 Celsius degrees, GPU clocks go to ~450Mhz, FPS in most games drop from about 60 to 20 FPS.I write this, but i see that many people has written about this on forum, and no, its not a Power Manager problem or not selecting High Performance GPU in NVIDIA Control Panel.Using NVIDIA Inspector i can clearly see that GPU Throttle temperature is locked at 61 degrees and nothing can change it, which is absolute absurd, because doing anything GPU-heavy will cause this temperature - resulting huge performance drop. So, i'll go to the point. Is there any possible way to solve this problem? On NVIDIA forums they told me to contant manufacturer, so i'm doing this. Is there any possible way to obtain VGA BIOS to edit throttling temp and flash it on my notebook?Regards.

TLDR: can you tell me if my chipset supports AHCI? I have Windows 10 installed on my brand-new 710S, and I want to install a linux distro (Ubuntu or Mint) as a dual boot. The problem I ran into is that when live booting Ubuntu or Mint from USB, the installer doesn't detect my SSD drive. It just says "Not enough space on this drive" referring to the USB drive. I've done a good amount of research and I think the problem is that RAID is currently enabled on my SATA controller driver, and I guess Linux doesn't play nice with RAID. Most of the advice online says that i need to go into UEFI firmware (i.e., BIOS) and switch from RAID to AHCI (and probably re-install windows, or do some other magic handwaving to avoid trouble), but my UEFI firmware menu doesn't even have an option to switch between RAID and AHCI. Digging deeper, I started to suspect that my chipset isn't able to support AHCI at all. The problem is I am having trouble determining if this is the case or not. SO MY QUESTION: how do I find out? Here is everything I know: Secure boot and fast boot are turned off. UEFI is still enabled. I am ahead of the curve on that. I have done dual boots before on other machines. - Harddrive is M.2 SSD- In the Windows Device Manager, there is no IDE ATA/ATAPI controller dropdown.- There IS a Storage Controllers dropdown, and underneath there is "Intel Chipset SATA RAID Controller" and "Microsoft Storage Spaces Controller" - Windows does not provide a ... Hi!
I am Techsavy8 from India.

Now I would like to know the basic difference in terms of performance for an onboard graphics card and a dedicated graphics card for a Laptop.

What could be a major difference?
Also, for Onboard graphics, it is said on all the branded website that the size of it is upto 384MB shared.

So, say for instance, if I go for a dedicated graphics card for a new laptop which I am planning to purchase and the size of this dedicated graphic card is 256MB or 128MB and Onboard graphic card on the other hand provides 384 MB shared memory, therefore the question is that how could that external graphics card sizing 256 MB deliver better performance as compared to Onbard graphics which sizes 384 MB shared?

Also, how are the new laptops launched by HP in India in terms of performance, mobility & stability?
The Laptop which I am looking for falls under 6700 series and is a business series laptop.
Waiting eagerly for a reply...

Hello. My girlfriend has a Lenovo y50 Touch with a NVIDIA GeForce GTX 860m GPU. It has perfomed well, however when I recently installed AutoCAD 2015 on it, I found out that it is actually using the Intel Integrated graphics card instead.

Rant:This is very disappointing because I advised her to purchase this one because of the dedicated graphics, and if it is not even going to use it then she could have saved a lot of money buying one without it.

Anyways, I have tried a few things to fix it, namely going to the Nvidia Control Panel and chaning the prefered graphics card to to the Nvidia. But I right-click on autocad and go to "Run with Graphics Processor >" it still shows the intel as the default, and even when I chose nvidia, the intel is still shown as the graphics processor from the autocad setting.

In short, I need help enabling the dedicated nvidia graphics card and using that insetad of the intel integrated. Any help is much appreciated! Please let me know what additional information would be needed.

A:Lenovo y50 Touch not using Dedicated Graphics. HELP!

See this AutoCad knowledgebase. Hopefully you can disable the intel card in BIOS as the article states.

Hi, I've read about some issue with yoga 710 fan noise that was recently fixed with a BIOS update. Is there an update for ideapad 710s-13IKB on the way? The unofficial third-party fan controller software doesn't work, perhaps because this laptop has two fans. Just installing some software for example causes the i5-7200u CPU to overclock to over 3GHz  which seems unnecessary. Limiting the CPU max clock to 70% from power management settings helps but is an ugly fix because it's a constant limit. When the temperature is +40C the left side fan stays on.... +39 and below the fan seems to shut down, but doesn't happen unless I let the computer idle for a long time. The fan control seems to jump every 10 degrees. +70C and above is the highest level. Because of the over-eager turbo clock the laptop can reach +70C very quickly and go into full fan power when doing low-intensity tasks. It does this every time I power on, and it takes a minute to lower the clock and fans down to reasonable levels. I noticed the fan issue straight away when I installed the W10 anniversary update. CPU/fan issue could be linked to high hard drive activity also. Also, the Lenovo Battery Gauge doesn't appear no matter how many times I try to enable it. It just doesn't want to show up on the task bar. Is it a seperate issue or are these two related?

A:Increase dedicated graphics memory on my Lenovo 710 11IKB

Welcome to the CommunityAs there isn't an option in the BIOS Setup to change the amount of video RAM, I don't see another official way except of the installation of Intel generic graphics drivers for this adapter. Usually laptop manufacturers restrict the feature you need in the customized graphics drivers while Intel allows that for some graphics adapters in its generic drivers. But there isn't a guarantee these drivers are capable to install on certain OEM graphics adapter.

Hello everyone. I own the Lenovo Z50-75 and I would like to know if it's possible to use only the dedicated graphics card for gaming on this laptop. First of all, my system specs are:

CPU: AMD FX-7500 @2.1GHz
RAM: 6GB (5GB in use)
GPU: Radeon R7 (integrated; shares 1GB with RAM), Radeon R7 M260DX (dedicated with 2GB VRAM)
OS: Windows 7 Ultimate x64

I know this laptop comes with the AMD's "Dual Graphics" feature. The problem is that most games don't work well with this setting (I had problems in many games with Dual Graphics enabled, such as screen flickering). Therefore I would like to use only the dedicated card, but no matter what I try, it seems impossible to get it working seperately from the integrated card.

I monitor the GPU load using GPU-Z, and the only way I could get the dedicated graphics card to show activity was when I enabled dual graphics with "AFR Friendly mode". Without Dual Graphics, it never turns on! But it is supposed to turn on when I set the power plan on "High performance", right?

What I've tried so far:

1. Disabled Dual Graphics and set every possible setting on High Performance (under power plan and CCC). The integrated card was used instead of the dedicated.

2. Enabled Dual Graphics, but set the game profile (in CCC) not to use Dual Graphics. No luck.

3. Plugged the laptop on an external HDMI monitor to see if the dedicated graphics card is enabled. Didn't... Read more

A:How to use the dedicated graphics card on Z50-75

Your point 1 should work for using the dedicated GPU.
From what I read, "Dual Graphics" from AMD is not a good working feature at the moment. You should do Point 1 (you mentioned).

Also, switch to Windows 8.1
Apply GPU updates.
Apply BIOS updates (if any).
Play a game and make sure you connected to AC power.

Try older AMD drivers, if the latest one gives problems.

Hi guys and girls,

I've been having a little trouble lately with my dedicated graphics card. My integrated is working fine, but my dedicated graphics card isn't even being detected (via device manager) let alone working.

I opened my case up and saw that on startup my fan budges a little bit as if it has life, but then fails to fully fire up. Yesterday i reseated it, cleaned it and the motherboard slot with some compressed air, swapped pcie cables and power cycled ect, and it worked like a charm, running everything I wanted it to. But the morning after it reverted back to its undetectable, idle state. a I retried everything that I did before, nothing happened.

So now I come to you, could I get some help please?

my graphics card is AMD HD Radeon 7800

Thankyou so much in advance!

Hi Alexandr,

Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!

I?m sorry to inform you that the AMD GPU (Graphics Processing Unit) will automatically if the application that is running requires High-End graphics and cannot and manually switched in the computer; even if the Intel driver is disabled or Un-Installed the computer will automatically download using ?Windows Update? and revert back to same stage. I suggest you to use the graphics and the other features as provided by the OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer).

So i decided to open my laptop, but for some reason, I couldn't get the entire cover off and I ended up not cleaning the fan, so I decided to give it to a company to clean it for me. They did a great job, but when I got the laptop back, one of the graphics cards wasnt working, the dedicated radeon one. Not working means it wouldnt show up anywere, as if it wasnt even in the laptop, i couldnt find it in device manager or anything, so my guess is, its actually disconnected. Due to a number of reasons I could not get back to the company to make them fix what they did. but since I didnt really need the graphics card, I didnt mind. That was until now. Now, since I want to do some video editing, a bit more hardcore gaming etc. I would realy need the graphics card, so I decided to open my laptop and I managed to find a video on how to do it, and I did it. When i got in, I could clean the fan, but I simply dont know where the graphics card is so i could reconnect it. I've been searching all around trying to find it, but i cant. Can somebody please tell me how its supposed to look like, where I can find it and how i can reconnect it.  Thanks a lot.

I'm really bad with technical stuff in computers, so be REALLY detailed

A:How do I add more dedicated Video RAM to my graphics card?

The only detail you need to know - you just cant do it. And its not bleh, video ram is the last thing you should look at, it doesnt give you anything.

Hello.I've had this issue for about a year now, but since it was never really that important, i just let it go. BUt now, I would really need a fix. Basically what happened is that I had an issue with my cooling fan, it was ful of dust. So i had it cleaned out by a company, but when i got my laptop back, my dedicated amd graphics no longer worked. But not only that, it was literally gone from every scan. Cant find it under device manager, not in the dxdiag, not anywhere. SO my guess is that it must have been somehow disconnected. My question is, how can i reconnect it. Where on the motherboard do i find the connection between the graphics card and the motherboard. I dont know if these 2 are connected, but my cd/dvd rom also no longer works.
