Always showing boot menu /app menu on startup, not booting

Q: Always showing boot menu /app menu on startup, not booting

I have bought Lenovo Essential G580 (59-324061) Laptop (3rd Gen Ci5/ 4GB/ 500GB/ DOS) on Feb 2013, its out of warranty now. I have installed Ubuntu in the laptop, not sure how i formatted the hard disk during installation. I guess it was full format of hard disk during installation (while selecting hard disk). Till today everything was working fine. From today morning, there is always a Boot menu which is being displayed with following options:1. ubuntu2. PCI LAN: Atheros Boot Agent3. ATA HDD: ST500LT012-9WS1424. ATAPI CD: MAT**bleep**A DVD-RAM UJ8D1 I have pressed enter in both Ubuntu and ATA HDD options. But after a brief duration the control comes back to the same menu I have specified before. I am not able to understand what is happening, or how to boot to my ubuntu. Please help. I have searched for possible solutions in the community, but could not find any information either.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Always showing boot menu /app menu on startup, not booting

Solved this at last. Just removed the battery and after 2-5 mins, switched on again, it worked fine. Probably this was due to the NOVO button (small button near to the power button) was clicked accidentally. This probably made a hard reset, of the settings, and DONE.

My new Lenovo T570 always fail to boot/startup normally. When i press the power button to start the laptop, it will display a page showing the following: "Lenovo", "To interrupt normal startup, press enter". This page will remain displayed permanently. This problem was noticed few days after i launched the laptop. I thought it would resolve on its own but it became worse. Now when i pres the power button, it will either display the above page or it will show the boot menu/app menu page. Please what might be the cause and the possible solution?. Thanks.

I'm writing this for a friend.

"About 1:00 this morning, my Gateway Laptop starting acting strangely. I was surfing the web when suddenly my computer began running incredibly slowly. I decided to restart, but when my profile opened, my entire desktop was clear, start menu included, save for my wallpaper.

"The start menu and icons appear at first, but then clear away after a while. In that time, I can open up outside applications, but not My Explorer or anything windows related. I brought it into Best Buy this morning and they told me that it was a virus that hit explorer.exe and that I had to back up everything and nuke the hard drive with a reformat.

"Needless to say, I wanted a second opinion. What do you guys think? I'm running XP, btw."

I'm on XP x64. Whenever I start up my computer nowadays, the start menu doesn't even show up. I've been waiting for a long time for it to. The reason I'm able to post on these forums is because I went through Task Manager, and File -> New Task (Run...) and typed firefox to access this site. It's just the idiotic startbar. Halp?

EDIT: Oh yeah. Whenever I log in (i'm using the Welcome screen), and it says "applying your personal settings..." or whatever, I have to hit ctrl alt delete to ge ttask manager. The only time windows will load is if the start menu DOES show up which is rare.

Hi:

It was about a month ago the last time I booted into the Windows ME Startup Menu. I tried booting into the Windows ME Startup Menu yesterday with no success. I applied all the methods that I know of while booting up my system. I tapped the F8 - No Result, I held down the Ctrl - No Result, I held down both Shift keys - No Result and last I tried the most sure fire way I know of I went into System Configurations > Advanced and I ticked Enable Startup Menu - No Result.

What else is left to do? Perhaps has my bios become corrupt? Any suggestion would be appreciated.

Thank you

I have recently instaled windows 7 professional 32bit and 64bit versions on same laptop.

to my surprise the boot menu does not display, though its present.

boot options have it on a 10 second delay so i get a 10 sec blank screen.

in that time if i hit <Enter> I get the 32 bit version

if i hit <DOWN ARROW> and <Enter> I get the 64 bit version.

As you can see it works perfectly, but does not display anything.

I suspect its a resolution issue.
both versions of windows 7 work perfectly.

Any hints on this subject?

Hi Kiteman2186,

My name is Tapan. I am from Dell Social Media Team.

You would need to press F8 key for access the boot menu. You can follow be;ow mentioned steps and you would be able to boot to advanced options boot menu.

1. Restart the computer.
2. 2. Tap the < F8 > key on the keyboard at intervals of 2 to 3 seconds at the Dell logo until you see the Windows Advanced Options Menu on the screen.
3. 3. Select Safe Mode from the menu using the arrow keys on the keyboard and then press the <Enter> key.
4. 4. Select Administrator at the log in screen.

Let me know of the findings. Glad to be of assistance.

My computer and my dad's computer are both set like the above. Yet his computer is showing the boot menu when starting up, which only has Windows 7 on it. I used Easy BCD to rewrite the MBR, but that didn't make a difference. My computer doesn't show any boot menu.
In addition to this issue, before the boot menu comes up, he gets a black screen with a DOS cursor blinking in the upper left corner. This screen will only go away if a key is pressed. So far I've seen that Shift and Space work. Letters didn't, odd, right?
Anyway, yet still, another addition to this mystery, is when going to an Explorer window, say Computer for example, the address bar goes wonky. I've seen this on my grandma's computer before and it was caused by sticky keys. This keyboard is new though, so it doesn't have sticky keys yet. Pushing Shift also stops this from happening.

Does anyone here have any ideas to what's caused these issues? I suspect they aren't linked to each other, but I'm not sure.

Hola, so I recently downloaded the W8 consumer preview, formatted, installed it, then installed w7 on a separate partition. A:Windows 8 new boot menu not showing

The problem is that Windows 7 installation replaced part or the whole boot environment.
Microsoft recommends installing older Windows versions first to avoid boot problems.

However problem can be solved:

Download and install Visual BCD Editor - Windows 7/Vista. The tool comes with "Dual boot Repair" utility.
Run it. Click "Automatic Repair" and confirm. This will place the Windows 8 boot environment in control and set Windows 8 as default boot entry. The new graphic boot-menu should be there after reboot.

Only latest version 0.9.3.1 of the product recognizes Windows 8. (Earlier versions recognize from XP till Window 7 !)
----------------------------------------------------------
Note:
You will be not very interested in switching from new graphic style boot menu to old text style but this can be done by adding and deleting an element to {bootmgr} object in BCD.
If element "DisplayBootMenu" is present and set to true => old text style.
Element "DisplayBootMenu" not present => new graphic style.

Hope this helps.

Hello Friends..

I recently re-installed windows 7 in my D drive. earlier it was also installed there ,but due to some errors I had to do it. when i was installing , during setup it was showing drive C as primary, i formatted the whole drive d and re-installed the windows 7 32 bit.
i must also mention here that after the installation completed and I log on to windows 7 it changed the drive letter from d to c and and the other one which was showing c in setup menu had no drive letter. i had to go to the disk management to assign it a letter

Now i m getting a OS choice menu, giving me two options one is windows 7 and the other earlier version of windows. and when i select the earlier verison , nothing comes up, just a black screen. and windows 7 runs just fine..

i donot have a second os that is for sure. and I also checked in msconfig's "Boot" menu(as stated in other posts). There too i have only one windows showing up i.e. Windows 7.

Please help me to get rid of this problem....
i can provide any screenshots if you need it for solving.

Before we make any specific recommendations will you please post a snip/screen-shot of the entire disk management drive map with a full description as to which drive/partition is which, so we can see what you have going on as there may be a fairly simple way to resolve the situation.

In the Windows start menu right click computer and click manage, in the left pane of the "Computer Management" window that opens click disk management and post a maximized snip of that.

We recently purchsed some of the EliteDesk 800 G2s and are having a terrible time getting them to see certain usb flash drives to boot off them. I have some PNY Turbo 3.0 drives that boot fine. I needed more, so I got some Kingston DataTraveler 100s and they wouldn't boot. Did some research and saw others were having a terrible time using them with UEFI BIOSes, so we ordered up more PNY Turbo 3.0 drives and now these new ones aren't seen, just like the Kingstons. Try the "old" PNY's and they boot.  I use RUFUS to make the bootable flash with an ISO of the HP restore disc. Did the same process on both and only the old one was listed in the Boot Menu. Has anyone else seen this? Does HP have a tool for these machines to make boot discs? They don't have optical drives so I can't run media creation software, which ironically, these come with the version that only writes to optical discs. Why would they not put the one that does USB media? Anyways, there has to be something out there that will help me make the USB drives show up and boot. This is beyond aggrivating.

Hi!
Last year I purchased a XPS 13 and was pretty happy with it until the mini Displayport stopped working and I had to send the device to Dell two weeks ago. Unfortunately they reset my laptop and Windows 8 was the operating system again (I upgraded to Windows 10).
Then I tried to use my system image, which I created before sending the laptop in. This did not work because of Windows 8 instead of Windows 10. I read in some help forums and one person recommended to restart the laptop by using a USB as recovery disk, which I did. I made the recovery disk and entered the BIOS/UEFI and changed the boot order to USB first.
Now I cannot reset my laptop with the USB recovery disk, since the laptop then tells me:
"Unable to reset your PC. A required drive partition is missing."
I also cannot change back to the original boot sequence since the HDD is missing in the options. When I enable legacy mode, there is no HDD. When I take out the USB recovery disk, I automatically get to a black screen which says:
"No bootable devices--strike F1 to retry boot, F2 for setup utility, F5 for system check. I did the system check and it found no error."

Can anybody please help me with this?

Hi,

A couple of weeks ago I got infected by a virus (Bagle?) which wiped out my security software and made my system boot much more slowly. The delay is basically much earlier in the boot process than most of the "Guide to why your pc is slow booting"-type advice. As soon as the BIOS has finished its display telling me it has found my drives it then just sits there for 2 or 3 minutes before the usual Boot Menu shows up (with its normal 30sec countdown), after which everything is normal. It used to be just 2 or 3 seconds rather than minutes.

Now I had help from another forum to remove the malware and am told my system is now clean. When informed of the remaining delay problem the helper basically said it was now out of his specialty and he referred me here so I am asking you guys for help please.

Further info - Some of my security apps had to be re-installed as they had been corrupted. Since then I have tried booting to the Recovery Console and tried FIXMBR and FIXBOOT but they made no difference. I have also tried AVG AntiRootkit which found nothing.
It is quite possible that the problem could be unrelated to the viral attack.

My system is a Dual Core system, 1024Mb RAM and over 100GB disk space free. Running WinXP Pro SP2. All updates applied.

A:Slow Booting Prior To Boot Menu

Without a specific problem to approach, I'd have to suggest using SFC.EXE /SCANNOW or a repair install of Windows (uninstall IE7 first).

It all depends on what's causing the slowdown - and there's no telling what that is without extended diagnostics. For starters you can look in your Event Viewer for errors - and can use the Microsoft BootVis tool (although it's use isn't supported in XP) to figure out what's causing the delay.

OK. My computer multi-boots to Windows 7 & 8 right now. 8 is on an SSD.

I am thinking about adding another HDD, moving 8 to the new HDD, and installing Windows 10 [Technical Preview] onto the SSD. If I disconnect the drives with 7 & 8 during the install, then add them to the boot menu after, can I make the computer boot to the HDD with 8, have that boot menu default to 8, with 7 & 10 as options, and if I make the computer boot off the SSD default to 10 with 7 & 8 as options?

A:Boot Menu & Multi-Harddrive booting

I am assuming that you have W7 & 8 installed using MBR style and they are both running 64 bit.
With Windows 8 running. Open Admin command prompt and type: bcdedit /export BCDbackup to save your current BCD. copy BCDbackup to somewhere safe. With the HD connected. Download Macrium Rescue disk from here: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0Bxg...ew?usp=sharing and use: Rufus - Create bootable USB to create a bootable USB stick. then boot up your PC with it.On the first screen. Select Backup tab, select the SSD as source, click "Clone This disk", click next, select the HD as destination disk. Make sure you select the correct one.Shutdown. Disconnect the SSD and connect the HD to the cable that was connected to the SSD. set the boot priority to the HD in BIOS then reboot. If everything boot up as expected. Shutdown and connect the SSDBoot up Windows 10 TP installation media then select the SSD to install Windows 10
NOTE: delete all partitions from the SSD then click next.

Hope this helps.

Hi. I have a Lenovo P50 that after doing recent Windows 10 updates, it now is not booting properly. When it boots, it brings me to a boot menu that is completely empty. It does not detect the hard drives, any external usb/hard drives, external DVD, etc. from the boot menu. If I run a diagnostics, that detects the drives for example, and all results come back fine.  If I try to go in to the BIOS and edit anything in the boot order, that too shows nothing. Also, the network boot option shows nothing.  I cannot figure out why there are no boot options appearing and why I also cannot even boot of a USB if I wanted to.

hi shouu,

Welcome to the Forums.

It's likely that the boot priority has been changed in the BIOS causing the Boot Menu to show up everytime the unit is turned ON / restarted.

Things that you can try:
1. Boot into the BIOS by continuously tappnig F2 on startup (before the Lenovo logo shows up) or by pressing the OneKey Recoveyr button.
   - Sample image

2. Once In the BIOS navigate to the Startup tab > Boot Priority Order and ensure that the Boot Menu is at the very bottom or at the exclude list.
  - Sample image

When finished, hit F10 to save and exit and observe.

Let me know if this works for you.

I?d like to guide you in a way to try to set the HDD (Hard Disk Drive) inside the BIOS to be the first priority booting order so we will try to return the BIOS to factory default settings:

Step1: Please turn off the machine and then at the left side you can see the NOVO button which is the button with the curve arrow

Step2: Press on the NOVO button and then you will get option press on BIOS Setup

Step3: Please press on FN+F9 together and then press Enter on Yes option and then FN+F10 to save and exit and then press Enter

Hope the information helps. Let us know.

Regards

Soha

Hello,
I am having problems with direct booting into Windows 8 installed into a VHDX file.
This is a four-partition UEFI boot on a GPT drive. EFI files are residing on a second partition of disk 0 (the ESP partition) in the EFI folder. The boot virtual disk is residing on the fourth partition of that disk 0.
When I turn on the PC, it shows black screen after the BIOS POST screen. No Windows 8 boot menu, no other information is displayed. However, if I press Shift+F12 (or F12) to start Dell BIOS Boot Menu and choose Windows Boot Manager from the UEFI part of
the boot menu, Windows 8 starts to boot without difficulties.
How do I make Windows to boot automatically without having to select Windows Boot Manager in DELL BIOS boot menu?
I believe I messed up with boot sector somehow... What needs to be fixed provided that Windows 8 will boot into VHDX file?
Thank you.

Well this is the world we live in And these are the hands we're given...

hi sivasandeep99,

Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!

If you have tried FN+F2 when boot?
Or holding down Shift and clicking restart?
If those steps did not work either,  You might need to contact Lenovo Technical Support and have the system shipped to Repair Facility for BIOS Reflash.

Found this article but it is for the same model that has same issue like yours.

Hello, i'm using a Gateway Windows 8 64 Bit.

I know how to access the boot menu using the advanced troubleshooting option inside the computer. But, what if Windows 8 becomes unbootable and I cannot log into the machine? There is no boot menu option like Windows 7.

I have heard if Windows will not boot, it will display the advanced options automatically. Is this true?

Also, if I power down my system while it is booting up will I be able to access the boot menu on next startup?

A:A way to access boot menu on startup?

Hello Windows8Home,

If Windows will not boot, it will usually display the recovery options screen, but there's no guarantee either.

You don't want to hard shut down the computer during startup if you could help it, since that could corrupt Windows.

Option Four and on in the tutorial below are some good options to boot to the startup options menu if you like.

Hi,

I have my Windows 2K and Windows 98 PC running fine. It brings up a startup option and I select the option that I want.

My problem is that the software that I am running needs to run from the Windows 98 start menu option number - 5. command prompt. At present when I want to run the software I need to firstly choose the Windows 98 option from the menu and then try to hit F8 really quickly so that I can run the command prompt.

Is there any option that I can write in the boot.ini that will force the Windows 98 Boot Partition to show me the startup menu instead of having to hit F8 really quickly.

thanks,
Jonathan

A:dual boot 2K/98 - how do I get it to run the startup menu automatically.

Post your boot.ini file. If you are multibooting it should come up automatically unless the timeout= option has been removed.

Hi,

I plan to have two installations of windows 7, on each harddrive. I don't want a dual boot setup in the traditional sense, where Windows adds it to startup options, and the boot files are all placed on one drive, if that makes sense.

What I am after are two totally independant systems that are not aware of each other, by installing one first, then unplugging that drive, then installing the other.

The only way to boot these is via F12 boot menu, where you would select to boot from a drive, usb, or cd.

My question is, would it be possible to set in BIOS options, to always display this F12 boot menu on startup, rather than having to quickly time hitting the F12 key?

I guess this is dependant on the motherboard bios itself (Gigabyte Z87) but I have no idea what this option would be called or if it exists.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

A:How to display Bios boot menu on startup?

Not possible as far as I know. I have not seen any option in the BIOS to do that. The best you can do is set the drive with the OS you use most often as the first boot device. Then use F12 to switch to the other drive when need be.

Hello guysI had both Windows XP and Windows 7 installed on my computer until a few days ago. Then, I uninstalled the Windows 7 OS, and kept only XP. I've formatted the Windows 7 partition, but when I start the system, it still shows Windows 7 in the menu, and I can still select it. It doesn't work, obviously, but it's pretty annoying.Any idea how do I remove it from the boot menu? Thanks guysMaddieHello Guys, I had the same problem and tried what you guys suggested. But the boot.ini file only has a line for the operating system I'm using. I checked the hidden files in all other partitions but I already formatted all partitions and there is no other boot.ini files anywhere. I don't know what else could be wrong. Any ideas? Thanks Raaney

A:Removing Dual Boot From Startup Menu

FWIW: The boot.ini file for XP...is overridden by the Windows 7 file, normally. The basic assumption is that XP was installed before Win 7 and the XP boot.ini file is incapable of recognizing the Win 7 install because it's newer than XP.Sooo...modifying the boot.ini file of an XP install...won't solve the problem, IMO. In fact, that boot.ini file won't even boot XP...it is the Win 7 files which now boot the XP install...and which reflect the Win 7 install that you removed. If it were me...I would simply use EasyBCD to modify the recognized boot files...or simply do a repair install of XP, which will break the Win 7 bootloader and reestablish boot.ini properly.EasyBCDI dual-boot both and have done the repair install of XP when I tired of Win 7...and I've also used EasyBCD (installed in XP) to correct a boot problem with XP after I had removed my Win 7 partition.Louis

Serial Number 5CD6107NZM  Product Number T1D62EA#ABU i am a little disappointed in boot up time which takes about 25 seconds. The main delay seems to be the time taken before the HP logo appears. It takes about 5 or 6 seconds before a message 'press esc key to enter startup menu' appears and then another few seconds before the HP logo. After that it is very quick. Is there any way to boot straight to the HP logo?Prior to buying this notebook I did buy one from Microsoft Store (decided to change because of larger SSD hard drive) and that notebook booted up in 1.1 seconds. I think it was called a Signature Edition of the Spectre x360 and apparently contained no bloatware although I'm not sure if that affected the boot time.

Used my laptop for 10 months. Recently, this boot menu window always showed up whenever I'm switching on my laptop. When I pressed ESC or ENTER, nothing happens and it will keep going into the same window for 10 minutes. After 10 minutes, only the system will start as usual. Anyone knows what is the problem? And how to disable the boot menu from appearing during startup?

hello...
I had xp_sp2 in two differents partitions. but saddly one crashed due to virus. Now I reinstalled in that partition again the same OS but I can not see at the startup the other OS. It actually starts directly in the new installed OS without let me choose between the two operating systems.

I already tried (in the new inst.OS) going to system advanced sitem startup, but in the choices as system default it does not give the second option.

I don;t know what to do ....

Thanks in advance!! diego

A:[SOLVED] I cannot see the multi boot menu at startup

have you tried to edit the boot.ini file? i had the same problem before and i edited the boot.ini to see the other Windows partition. see this MS page: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/289022

sample of boot.ini:
=======================
[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINNT="Windows 2000 Professional" /fastdetect
=========================================

EDIT:
here's an instruction from ThorXP in using BOOTCFG in Recovery Console:

I have window xp SP2 on my asus A8jn on two partions C and D. I have my backup data on the D partition. But i decided to install window 7 ultimate x32 on the C, then on a restart i get a "BOOTMGR not found", boot manager corrupt error message. When i restart again it just load the partition with the window 7 straight without without displaying option to select the other partition.
