HELP Ctrl+Alt+Delete Wont Work

I just recently tried to use Ctrl+Alt+Delete but it wouldn't work please help!!!!
I haven't recently installed anything I tried enabling everything from msconfig.

Ctrl+Alt+Delete is supposed to be your last resort, the thing that always works, the last trick up your sleeve, the best weapon you have...but now it doesn't work.
they won't even let me have any more smilies...

Preferred Solution: Solved: Ctrl+Alt+Delete Won't Work Please Help the Task Manager is always suppost to work!!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

This is the third time this happened. I online, browsing along minding my business when I went to click on a link on my IE favorites and everything froze except the mouse cursor. I tried doing ctrl-alt-delete, then clicking on task manager (I figured I'd ex out programs one by one & see if that unfroze things) but the task manager never appeared & now all of the other options on that blue/yellow Vista screen are gone & all that's left is that blue/yellow screen with "Windows Vista Home Premium" at the bottom & I just can't get out of this screen. I had to manually restart, which I hate. I know there's a way to check the error log but I'm not sure how. I'm running 32 bit windows home. Can anyone help figure out why this happens seemingly so arbitrarily?

Howdy,I created a post on the "Am I Infected?" thread back on 11/02/2009 and Mark (garmanma) has been helping me. He does not feel I am infected but stated I could always touch base this you kind folks so here I am. My task manager won't come up with ctrl+alt+delete, ctrl+shift+esc, start -> run-> taskmgr, or from right click on the task bar? We tried all kinds of neat little programs to see what was up but to no avail, however we didn't try the HijackThis route so I am hopeful. Someone gave me an old computer running Windows 2000 pro to fix and it had tons of issues with it (spyware, trojans). After running multiple scans, I've finally cleaned up the entire thing and it is working perfectly except for one tiny little problem.

Hitting the keys CONTROL ALT and DELETE will bring up a "Windows security" window which will have a button to access Task Manager, but when I hit the button it will not bring up the Task Manager. Right clicking on the task bar at the bottom and clicking on "Task Manager..." will not bring it up either. Hitting CTRL SHIFT and ESC does not bring it up either. However, Start/run/tskmgr.exe DOES work. I should mention that this problem has existed for a long time now, according to the person who owned the computer. They say they used to be able to run Task Manager using the CTRL ALT DEL method, but it just stopped working one day.

So basically, Task Manager works ONLY when using the START/RUN/tskmgr.exe method. I guess it could be a virus of some kind, but keep in mind that I've just got done running tons of scans, IN SAFE MODE to boot, and it has brought up absolutely nothing. When I try any of the other methods to open Task Manager (ctrl alt del, ctrl shift esc, right clicking task bar) it pops up for maybe a half second, and closes. What's interesting is that I'll hit CTRL SHIFT ESC and leave the buttons pressed opening up many of these disappearing little windows, and I can actually se... Read more

I read previous forums on how to fix this but am still having the issue.

Anyway, I used to be able to bring up task manager by pressing ctrl+alt+delete once, and it I pressed that two times in a row I was able to shut down my computer if I needed to. None of that works anymore. I can still access task manager by right clicking on the taskbar. I did recently Uniblue and have been cleaning the registry, so this may have something to do with it but I'm not sure. Here is the Hijack This log. Any suggestions would be great. Thanks.

I am running Windows XP on a Toshiba Tecra Laptop. A couple months ago my supervisor "hooked" my laptop up to our work network, and ever since when I try to get to the task manager by Ctrl + Alt + Delete, another box comes up. This box has no title, but has the columns: User, ID, Status, Client Name, and Session. There is a user logged on, with an ID of 0, a status of active, and a session of console. The only options are to disconnect or logoff (both at the bottom of the box if you right click on user). I showed this to my supervisor, and he has no idea how to get me back to task manager. Anyone have any ideas?!

A:Solved: task manager won't work!!!!!<<<

Try the instructions here: http://windowsxp.mvps.org/Taskmanager_error.htm

If that doesn't help, you may be infected with something so:
Click here to download HJTsetup.exe: http://www.thespykiller.co.uk/files/HJTSetup.exe
Save HJTsetup.exe to your desktop.

Double click on the HJTsetup.exe icon on your desktop.
By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Hijack This.
Continue to click Next in the setup dialogue boxes until you get to the Select Addition Tasks dialogue.
Put a check by Create a desktop icon then click Next again.
Continue to follow the rest of the prompts from there.
At the final dialogue box click Finish and it will launch Hijack This.
Click on the Do a system scan and save a log file button. It will scan and then ask you to save the log.
Click Save to save the log file and then the log will open in notepad.
Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.
DO NOT have Hijack This fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

It has been about 2 weeks with no response from my C.A.D. buttons in tandem. I have seen no signs of anything thing fishy going on till tonight when I went to log on I noticed my Screen was black, and when I tried to log on I could see the mouse move but nothing else. I then tried to manually turn off the tower when I got a message that said as best I can remember "others are logged onto your computer, shutting down now will cause them to lose data, would you like to continue this operation." of course I said yes, but I couldn't get it to work. so I pulled the cat5 and manually shut her down then, upon reboot I tried to access the f8 function for safe mode, but after 2 tried I realized this wasn't gonna happen. Odds are someone is getting a kick out of seeing me type these words... Can you help?

When I hit 'ctrl + alt + delete', nothing happens. It doesn't even pop up for a second like some other have said. 'alt + f4' and 'alt + tab' also do not work at all.

I'm still able to get the task manager up by hitting 'ctrl + shift + ecs', but would like to get the other functions working as well.

I'm using Windows XP is that helps at all.

A:'ctrl + alt + delete' Does not work

Click on start, then try CTRL ESC - Does it open the program menu?

Then open 2-3 program and minimize it, then use the combination ALT TAB - are you able to navigate to different windows this way?

Launch Nopad -- Type something, then highligth it , then press Delete -- are you able to delete the text?

If all the above combination work, then you know that each key works correctly, if not, then is possible that you need to replace the keyboard

Have you tested all the keyboard combinations, the left CTRL, Rigth ALT etc.... Do you have another keyboard?

Also test in Safe Mode.

Just recently, I noticed control alt delete doesn't work anymore. Nothing happens when I press it. My computer has been running extremely slow. Usually I would click control alt delete and end the processes of everything I don't recognize. That seems to work, except I can't do it now. There are always a ton of processes in there that shouldn't be. If someone could help me get back that window, I could really use some help getting rid of all those unnecessary processes. Thanks.

what a surprise. my favorite key combination actually does not work. what happens is, i can press the 3 keys, but the only thing that comes up is the little tray icon with a full green bar showing it's using 100 percent of the processor (it's xp by the way). when i move my mouse over it, it disappears. i've seen that happen before, like when i COULD use ctrl+alt+delete to close a program that froze, like kazaa. when i moved my mouse over the tray icon for kazaa, it dissappeared. so i'm guessing that it opens, but then closes without closing the right way and clearing the tray like it is supposed to....

and the REGISTRY can almost never make any changes. it can read for my currently installed programs, but will not accept changes by any other means. so that means i can't install anything. if i had to reinstall windwows, would i be able to? would i be able to install backup software to backup my pictures, music, etc? if i did have to reinstall, it would be a format.

i also did a spyware check (which i did before the registry screwed up). bought some stuff from tz(trackzapper). seemed to lessen the pop-ups, but it seems to have lessened windows' function.
anyone know what happened?
oh yea, sry about the colors, i wanted to see if it really worked..:D

A:can not makes changes to registry; ctrl+alt+delete does not work

Not that this is going to help any, but lately there seems to be an epidemic of people with Kazaa having major problems and viruses. Something to think about...

Hi all,

Just started experiencing this problem a few days ago. No idea what caused it.

The delete key on my keyboard(s) no longer works. I've tried 3 different keyboards (which I know to function), and pressing the delete key (either one, on the numpad or above the arrow keys) doesn't have any effect.

Even on the on-screen keyboard, it doesn't work!

Strange thing is though, CTRL+ALT+DEL works. SO for some reason, the delete command just isn't registering when I press the delete key.

I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the keyboard and software, no results. I'm using a MS Comfort Curve keyboard, but also tested on a Logitech Wave and an old PS/2 keyboard.

I've searched all over and haven't found anyone with a similar issue.

Any ideas how to fix this?

Thanks much,

EDIT: Even more strange observation: When I hit a key in conjunction with DEL, it works. Like Shift+DEL functions properly!

A:Delete key on ALL keyboards doesn't work, but CTRL+ALT+DEL does.

And a restart fixed the problem... jeez I'm an idiot

Process of elimination. Try uninstalling Google toolbar, reboot, and then test again.

Title says it all. After a day or so of online time if I try to run internet explorer or openoffice or use cntrl alt delete nothing happened. The little "waiting" cursor appears for a few seconds, then nothing happens. Rebooting lets me run work normally.
I use Windows 7 and Microsoft security essentials.
I have a DDS log. I have the attachement, but didnt see where to post it.
When I ran GMER an error popped up, It said "C:/Windows/system32/config/system: The system can not find the file specified." Gmer would only scan "Services", "Registry", "Files", and "ADS". All the other options were graded out and could not be selected. When I hit the scan button with those options selected another error popped up: "C:/Windows/system32/config/system: The process could not access the file because it is used by another process." I bypassed the error message and a scan ran but "GMER hasn't found any system modifications."

Hi... I'm running Windows Vista Home Premium SP1 on my Dell Inspiron 1720 with a tricked out Firefox 3 with a bunch of extensions, and all of a sudden today I started notice that Ctrl + S and Ctrl + F, 2 keyboard shortcuts that I use ALL THE TIME, are no longer working in ANY APPLICATION. The F and Control keys are working fine separately and other common shortcuts such as Ctrl + C, V, A, O, and P are working just fine.

I've tried it in Firefox, Internet Explorer, Notepad, Paint and Dreamweaver and Ctrl + S and Ctrl + F don't work in either one of those applications. The weird thing is without doing much of anything, it was working at some point today after I had noticed it WASN'T working, but now I rebooted for another reason and those 2 shortcuts are not working again.

By the way, I went into Vista's Ease of Access center (previously called Accessibility I believe), and everything is turned off.

And I also tried the control key to the right of my keyboard. None of it works.

Very annoying... Anyone got any ideas or know of any app that will help me find out what the problem is?

Thank you very much in advance, any help's appreciated

I not quite sure what you saying but I believe what you saying it the menu part and option part of the windows task manager is not showing.

Easy fix for this on the screen that does show near the top of it double click with your mouse. This should fix the problem.

A:Task-manager Does not work

Do you have more than one monitor hooked up to your computer or did you have more than one recently?

The reason I ask is that this is a common reason for some Windows to open off-screen where you can not see them.

Here is a trick that helps if that is the case.

Follow these steps carefully because you are doing it blindly.

Right click your taskbar and open TASK MANAGER by selecting START TASK MANAGER
Press these keys on your keyboard.
left arrow
down arrow
down arrow
right arrow

now move your mouse to where you can see it and you should see your task manager window attached to your mouse pointer.

Let us know if this helps.

Ever since I first got this laptop, task manager has NEVER worked. A program would freeze up, I'd do the normal control, alt, delete... I'd get the blue screen and select task manager.

Sure, it would pop up and yes, I could select the program I wanted to close... and then I would hit, end task... and I'd wait... and wait... and WAIT.

It doesn't DO anything! It just SITS there wasting space. Eventually, I just have to log out of my account and go back in... and since a program was frozen up, it takes a while! What the heck?! Why doesn't it actually work?!

A:Task Manager does NOT work... EVER!

Hey Obbit, Welcome to TSF

Firstly, task manager has a 'new' shortcut CTRL + Shift + ESC.

As for ending your program. Try

1. Right click on the program you want to end
2. Click 'Go to Process'
3. It will change the tab and highlight the process
4. Press the Delete key
5. Click yes to the message box that comes up

That should kill the process without much hassle.

Hope is helps.

if you are a computer administrator and cannot open task manager, you're in trouble. try ctrl + shift+ esc. what protective software do you have, what internet browser do you use, what OS and service pack are you running?
