one of the screen names is having real problems

Q: one of the screen names is having real problems

here is how it started, my computer was really slow, I turned off a few options from vista (all visual though) and next thing you know, one of the screen names keeps freezing after it logs in. The other screen name is fine.
I tried working on the functioning one and switch user to the other and that is when it went blank. (black screen and nothing)

Preferred Solution: one of the screen names is having real problems

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: one of the screen names is having real problems

Do NOT switch user, but Log Out, then log in to the other account.
There seems to a problem with copying the data from the hard drive to the new user account.

hello, im running a sony vaio 80gb pentium 4 desktop with service pack 2 and a Sony VAIO VA TV-PC Series 320gb service pack 2. i'm using 4 logon names for Windows XP for each member of my family. just recently i have a problem, that when i install a program on the C drive, on one logon name, it will not install on any of the other 3 log on names. however if i install it on my D drive (its a split hard drive) then it will install it on other accounts. the folders in my program files become locked and have no association when on the different screen name to which i installed it from. it is becoming a bit of an issue and quite strange, any help would be great.

i have fixed the issue with a second format i belive it has something to do with spyware terminator program.

A:AOL Screen names

only the master account / screen name (your friend) can set up/delete additional screen names and it has to be done from that screen name
- it's all explained on aol in the help area
- try keyword 'screen name'

then it's an option when logging onto aol as to which screen name logs in

Hi

For some annoying reason my AOL email screen names are no longer linked

Is anyone else experiencing this?

At one time I could hover over my screen name in the left hand corner and the drop down would show all my other email screen names along with the number of emails. Now I have to log in to each email screen name individually to see if there are any emails which is a real pain. Last night it was working, today it isn't!

Have you gone into the control panel, clicked on users and set up different profiles and then each one logs in under there own name.

AOL you have to choose a user name. You might be able to change it under profile or preferences in AOL. Not sure, don't like it or use it.

I went the Safe Mode, Last Known Good and other options using F-8 but I get to the same point . . . blue welcome screen and no accounts shown. None of the accounst had passwords, simply a MOM, DAD, etc. account for the family members.

Any suggestions?

So i'm having some problems that wont go away. i first noticed it when i got a fake alert from a program masquerading as "microsoft security essentials alert" (i do use MSE though) but it wouldnt let me close the window. so i restarted, ran malwarebytes, and had it clean some stuff up. then, i get on call of duty 4, later that day, and i keep getting kicked out by punkbuster for having an unathorized program running. i wasnt cheating, the guys on the server know this (i've been there for years), so they told me that the program running was likely a virus. i keep running stuff to scan for it but it isnt going away. so i tried to do a system restore, which usually works, but that didnt help.

then, shortly after that, i get popups every few minutes telling me "SkypeNames" has stopped working. so i shut down skype and i keep getting the message. i uninstall skype and i keep getting the message. unless i minimize the windows, they stay on top of every open window i have. they keep coming up until 32 of them open at which point they will stop. system restore doesnt work either.

i tried having a friend sort this out, but he managed to crash my computer. so im coming to you guys.

I have a 160 GB HD NTFS file system with 118 GB free space. My Documents and setting folder has 8.87 GB with 12,388 Files and 816 folders that are many layers deep.

The problem: Every so often my XP professional OS will not accept a new long file name (less than 50 characters and spaces) but will accept an 8 character (DOS) name.

What is wrong? Have I reached a limit because of the long file names? Or too many files in a single folder? Or?

I run into the same problem with by back-up Hard Drive which has a FAT32 file system.

The problem seems to go away, at least for a while, if I restart my Dell Dimension 9100 PC.

Thank you, Supportbob4
9/9/05
I have replicated my problem both for my NTFS drive and the FAT32 drive.

I also finally got an error message which tells me the problem:
The maximum character and space limit of 255 includes file name plus the names of all the stacked folders after My Dicuments! The whole file path!

It can be very confusing because I was able to make it more than 255 characters and spaces but all of sudden it reached a threshold where it will no longer work until I shortened the file name back to 255. Going between hard drives seemed to make it recover sometimes when I had a longer than 255 path but then all of a sudden it stopped working.

I need to keep my folder names shorter and be cautious on length of file names too when I have many stacked folders.

A:Long file names not accepted Short DOS names ok

From what I recall the WinXP limits it to 255 characters, filenames written command prompt are 253 characters, and those include the filename and extension.

I just recently reinstalled Windows 10 Pro from scratch 2 days ago. All of a sudden I noticed yesterday evening I have 2 usernames on the logon screen. It normally boots directly into Windows (I turn off requiring password on NETPLWIZ screen). But now it comes up with Invalid User Name and/or Password. After I clear the error, it presents me with 2 usernames to logon with:

Stuart Moroz (this one has no options below where you type the password)
([email protected])

and

Stuart Moroz (this one has 2 options, local or MS Account. This one I think is the one that got added somehow)

How did I end up with 2? and how do I get it to boot directly into Windows again? Thanks for any/all assistance.

A:2 User names on logon screen all of a sudden

Hello Sage, and welcome to Ten Forums.

It sounds like you may not have entered the password correctly when setting up netplwiz to have Windows sign in to the account automatically at startup.

Start over with netplwiz to select the account and enter the password again to see if that may sort this for you.

Hello,

Where I work, we have a small network, and I'm wanting to set up a Computer Name "Theme", if you like, rather than the messy random ones we have at present.

This means changing the names of all the computers in the Domain of course.

Does anyone know if this can this cause problems? Or is it a fairly straight forward process?

All PCs/Notebooks are XP Pro
Server is 2003

Thank you

A:Changing Computer Names - Any potential problems

This is pretty straight foward as far as I know. For those that don't know to change the computer name you just right-click My Computer and go to Properties. On the second tab (Computer Name), click the change button. In the box that appeares change the computer name and click OK. Then restart the computer and the name will be changed.

To my knowlege that is all that has to be done, even if the computer is part of a Domain. The only time problems occur is if you try to use the same name on two computers.

Dell computer from 2001. Anyways, I did something very, very dumb yesterday. I was on the regedit screen, and when I went into one of the HKEY_LocalMachine or one of those HKEY folders, the "Classes" folder got deleted. That's when everything kind of...messed up. Regedit stopped working (asked for an "appropriate program from the list" to use with it) and almost everything stopped, so I had to shut the computer down.

Now when I shut it down and tried to get back on, I couldn't get ANYTHING on the logon screen except a dinky little Windows logo, with no usernames, making it impossible to logon! I tried pressing F2 and F12 to do something on the DELL screen when I frist turn on the computer, but that didn't do anything, as there are no options to reset WIndows or anything like that.

My question is, how the heck do I get back to the WIndows logon screen with the usernames back? I have so much stuff on my computer that I can't afford to lose. Do I need a special CD I need to purchase, and is there anyway to get back the users without losing all my stuff? Please help.

Thank you for your time. If you can, you can post here to help or email me at [email protected] (corny address but who cares)

These folders appear on all of my drives c:, d:, g: and they are random. It looks like they are of another language, maybe? Actually, the wording makes no sense at all...> It looks like most of these folders previously existed.

Things I have done: Ran Anti-V program + Ewido Suite = No viruses, trojans, malware, etc. Ran three adware programs (ad-aware, spywareblaster, spyware doctor) = Clear. Checked all running processes and startup tab in mscofig = no peculiar programs detected. Ran regseeker = Phenominal amount of invalid keys, etc. (3,000+) very unusual to the norm!!!

I recently have been fighting off a bad case of adware when I think in my overzealousness that I might have removed a little to much from the registry key or possibly deleted a needed file. (no, I didn't make a backup of the registry key, yes i know dumb). My problem is, whenever i try to open up IE6, the status bar on the bottom left side just says finding site: badurl.grandstreetinteractive.com (never heard of this site) (flashing and IE never resolves to anything, not even page cannot be displayed). Checked home page and it is not set to this address. I also noticed that I can ping IP addresses on the internet from my PC, however I cannot resolve any host names. (i.e. ping www.yahoo.com will not resolve but I can ping the numeric address, if i had it) I tried using several different DNS servers to no avail. I have also tried reinstalling TCP/IP and reinstalling the drivers on my NIC card. I have also reinstalled IE6. All to no avail.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

A:Problems resolving host names after bout with adware

Hi mysticpeanut and welcome to BCSounds as though your Hosts file has been corrupted, which is not at all unlikely when your dealing with malware. I use a Hosts file I got from MVPS.org. This host file prevents your computer from connecting to a large number of web sites that are known to be malicious. I get the occasional "Page cannot be displayed" but if I really want to go to one of those sites I open the Hosts file and rem out the section that blocks the site. I can then take out the rem and have that site blocked again. You can search your drive for "hosts" and open that file to see what it contains. It is a read only file so you need to remove that attribute, make a change, and then reapply the attribute. (Right click, Properties to do that)127.0.0.1 localhostThat needs to be the first line in the Hosts file. That line is under an area of writing that is surrounded by #'s If it is something else you will be directed toward that. You can get the MVPS Hosts file hereEDIT: I just checked and grandstreetinteractive is in my hosts file and is being blocked.EDIT AGAIN: You will see some other possible solutions for your problem on that page in the link.

A:Real Big problems

Not that anyone was in any real big hurry to help out, but I figured out my problem. I guess some type of Trojan got onto my computer and renamed my svchost.exe file to svchost.exe.bak, meaning I couldn't run anything that used that file, which is pretty much everything on the computer. Check this if you're having the same kind of problems that I eluded to.

Basically what I did was took the svchost file from a different computer and loaded it onto the infected computer and everything was fine. It's located in C:\Windows\system32. I know I could have just renamed the .bak version, but who knows what else the virus did to the file. I didn't really want to take a chance with it.

My Toshiba-Vista laptop got a HiJack virus...running Malwarebytes and SuperAntiSpyware got rid of it.
However, on boot, it would throw "Host Process for Windows Services stopped working".
I tried to update patches from Microsoft, but that erred out with Code 80072EFE. Doing some research on that, I found to run TDSSKILLER and COMBOFIX. Trying to install TDSSKILLER erred out after 80% installed. COMBOFIX threw a "DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL" error, dumped and crashed.
I can run in safe mode ok, but COMBOFIX still throws the DRIVER error.
Both Malwarebytes and AntiSuperSpyware run clean.
I suspect all is from a virus, but I have no idea where to start.
I have attached a HiJackThis log. It is under this in the Vista forum. Please help.

I also entered this under Vista forum...not sure where it belonged.

Now that your log is properly posted, here, you should NOT make further changes to your computer (install/uninstall programs, use special fix tools, delete files, edit the registry, etc) unless advised by a Malware Removal Team member, nor should you continue to ask for help elsewhere. Doing so can result in system changes which may not show it the logs you already posted. Further, any modifications you make on your own may cause confusion for the helper assisting you and could complicate the malware removal process which would extend the time it takes to clean your computer. From this point on the Malware Removal Team should be the only members that you take advice from, until they have verified your log as clean. Please be patient. It may take a while to get a response because the Malware Removal Team members are very busy working logs posted before yours. They are volunteers who will help you out as soon as possible. Once you have made your post and are waiting, please DO NOT make another reply until it has been responded to by a member of the Malware Removal Team. Generally the staff checks the forum for postings that have 0 replies as this makes it easier for them to identify those who have not been helped. If you post another response there will be 1 reply. A team member, looking for a new log to work may assume another Malware Removal Team member is already assisting you and not open the thread to respond. To avoid confusion, I am closing this topic.

I was wondering if there's anything I can post if someone can help me with my hardware if it's not right or what x.x

A:Real bad problems

sounds like your video card is having issues. I would make sure your card is not overheating for one, and make sure your case/video card is not covered with dust.

HWMonitor should provide you with some information on the temperature. Other things to look at is updating your video card drivers.

I periodically get notices from Win7 that I need to run the disk check utility. This is usually after a BSOD. These events have been occurring from the day I bought this laptop and I have posted them here in the past.

This time, the disk check utility changed names on at least 12 files. I don't know WHAT files, because the utility said the file names were corrupted.

After the reboot, I found that my Libraries were missing from the file manager. My Documents, Pictures, Videos and Music were gone. If I looked by clicking on C: and then navigating to them, I could find them, but the file manager could not.

Also, clicking on the Start button, then All Programs, gave me an empty screen. All the shortcuts were gone. Many of the shortcuts on my Task Bar are missing their Icons, but they work.

Many of my music files will not play because the file extension is now m4p. Changing the file extension to mp3 or mp4 does not work, the system sees them as an unknown file type.

I ran Microsoft Security Essentials, a FULL SCAN, and it scanned about 86,000 files. That was all it could find.

I have attached images that show the start menu and virus scan results as well as the usual dump files. The images show a black desktop, but I corrected that by re-choosing the custom theme I had made.

I tried to use Restore, but the restore points have dissapeared, and I cannot restore to before this event.

Please....................

A:Disk check utility changed file names, now I got problems.

Try this first:
SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker

Then try this:
Icon Cache - Rebuild

Then try running Malwarebytes:

Hi, let me start by saying I'm new to this so if I've posted in the wrong thread... sorry, I figure my computer uses XP so post in the XP help section? Second of all, it's become fairly apparent that I have little to no idea about anything to do with computers. So here's the problem: A week ago whilst enjoying an episode of the uni on my computer it blue screened. It's happened before so I wasn't too worried until I tried to boot it up again, no dice. It opened to this screen that it opens to every other time the computer starts, the express gate screen. It's an ASUS motherboard... I think. And you can either not move your mouse and let it get into the bios then eventually into xp OR you can click one of a few buttons that either take you to skype, the express gate internet browser bios set up.. blah blah blah. Anyways, I let it boot as usual but it got to the bios then didn't go any further. I plugged in a different monitor and it did the same thing, only this time I could see a blinking white underscore, it doens't move past this point. I went into the BIOS set up and... well, didn't do anything because I have no idea what any of it means. Then I plugged in a DVI to HDMI cable and plugged the computer into a HDMI socket on my monitor, it skipped the express gate screen and went right to the bios scree, then went to the very first opening screen like it had reset itself, then went to the bios screen, then to the white underscore thing again. So my question is what in the hel... Read more

A:Real problems booting...

when you got to the BIOS screen did the hard drive show? Go to the website of the hard drive manufacturer and download their diagnostic program, and burn to disk as a .ISO. Use that to boot the problem pc and run the diagnostic. You could also try if you have the xp disk going to recovery console and running chkdsk /r

Is the a way to fix it?

What is a good program for removing Real Player and programs such as this?

What is a good free video down load program that will handle more than one down load at a time. Thanks in advance
