How can I 'Copy and Replace' not 'Move and Replace'.

Q: How can I 'Copy and Replace' not 'Move and Replace'.

For some reason W7 has decided to change 'Copy and Replace' with 'Move and Replace' when picking a file up with the left mouse and dragging it to another folder where an old version of the file exists.

My Excel SS is in two places: My desktop and USB which I use for backup. I would simply open the folder on the USB pick up the file on the desktop with the left mouse and drag it to the USB folder. Then I would get the message 'Copy and Replace'.. But not anymore it's become 'Move and Replace'.

I know I can 'Copy and Replace' by holding down the Ctrl key but I dont want to.

It looks like there should be a simple answer

Can anyone help? I swear I didnt change anything.

Preferred Solution: How can I 'Copy and Replace' not 'Move and Replace'.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Getting a free OEM W7 Ultimate x64 from work.
I installed OEM Pro on my primary machine about a month ago.
How can I replace/upgrade from Pro to Ultimate on the primary machine & use the Pro OEM key on a secondary machine now or down the road?

A:Replace Pro with Ultimate and move Pro to different box

Legally speaking, you can't. If the copy of Pro you installed was an OEM copy, it's tied to the machine you activated it on.

I have a DOS batch file that moves files from one directory and sorts them into separate folders alphabetically. The problem is existing files get replaced. I know I can add the -y switch to be prompted but there's too many prompts. Does anyone know how I can skip if file exists automatically? I don't see that option anywhere in dos move command. Was wondering if I can use the "IF" variable somehow. Like IF exists skip or no replace etc. Can't find answer anywhere on web. TIA any help. Here is an excerpt from my batch file:

I upgraded my Bootcamp version of Windows 7 Ultimate to Windows 10 on my MacBook Air. The screen is cracked on my MacBook Air so I am trying to move Bootcamp to a new MacBook Pro. When I run Sysprep I am getting an error message that says Sysprep cannot run on an upgraded version of Windows.

My question is: If I purchase new Windows 10 Pro operating system, can I replace the upgraded Windows 10 product key with the new key and will it change the upgrade to a new installation of Windows 10. If it will do this, I can then run Sysprep and move Bootcamp to my new MacBook Pro.

Thanks for your help!

A:Replace key to Sysprep and move Bootcamp to my new MacBook Pro?

Hi BikerDude, welcome to the Ten Forums.

There's a really fast and simple workaround to get Sysprep to work on an upgraded Windows. See this tutorial: Users Folder - Move Location in Windows 10 - Windows 10 Forums, scroll down to end of it to find a section called UPGRADE. In that section you'll find Step 2. Edit Registry which tells you exactly what to do.

Ok so I have been trying to research how to do this and all I can find is how to disable the delete confirmation box.

When I move a file that replaces another file or folder with files in it (which is even more boxes) boxes come up asking am I sure if I want to do this with 3 options move and replace, don't move, or move and rename the new ones.

thanks for any help!

A:Disable Move/Replace Confirmation Boxes?

The only way I would know how to do that without having to confirm, is to do it in a batch file. There might be third party software that can do it, but I would have to search.

I often have to copy and overwrite files in multiple folders.
Previously in Vista, and now in 7, Explorer prompts me with:
- a dialog to overwrite the top folder
- when subfolders are overwritten it prompts me again with similar dialog with the checkbox "Repeat for all"
- finally "Copy + Replace or Copy + Keep Old File" choice, to which I always answer 'Copy+Replace"

See attached
Is there a way to resurrect old style XP dialog with one "Yes To All" button?

So i had a major mental blunder this morning and am trying to figure out if its fixable. I was copying a file between two computers on a home network. It was a copy and replace command. The file in question (an Access database) exists with the same name on both computers. One version is simply more current with data than the other. Unfortunately I did the copy and replace backwards, meaning i copied the less current database to the more current database location. I realized it within seconds and cancelled the command. Now the more current database is gone. Is it possible to find the more current database somewhere? Where did it go?

A:Cancelling Copy and Replace

it was overwritten when you copied the other db onto it. Do you have restores of those db's?

When copying a file to a folder in which there is already a file with the same name, you get three options:overwrite
copy the intended file but with a rename (file (2).xxx)
What is usually needed is to copy the file and rename the existing file in the destination folder.
Is this possible and how?

A:Copy and Replace functionality

Click cancel and then rename the existing file and then copy the new file to the folder.

Hi all,

The laptop in question is a Toshiba Satellite A105-S4334. A few weeks ago, it got dropped right on its corner with the power plug still in it; the little metal plug of the AC adapter is now slightly crooked, and the power jack has a little chip off the plastic part of it.

Anyway, after this mishap, it worked fine for another 3, 4 weeks, and then suddenly this week, it's refusing to power up. Its battery has been shot for a while (can't hold a charge), and I've been using it with the battery out. Why the sudden refusal to boot?

I took the whole thing apart---minus the little chip, the power jack looks totally fine and cosmetically sound. Put the whole thing back together, taking care to check that plugs were snug---still no power.

Stuck in the crappy battery; booted just fine (and then shut itself down after like 2 minutes).

How likely is it that it's the power jack which is broken? And why did it take this long to crap out, if it IS broken?

A new one of those silly jacks costs over $20 on eBay, so I want to make sure that it's the jack before I just up and buy one. Of course, if it's the AC adapter that's broken, that would cost even more! Bah.

A:Replace the power jack or replace the adapter?

AND/OR inside the case the the jack is soldered directly to the motherboard. Is also possible that
1) It's already cracked
2) If not yet, it's gonna crack

So look to see what connection looks like between power jack and motherboard, If you feel u wanna/can re-solder yourself or the typically price to redo the whole power thing seems to run $125 parts/labor/warranty if you take it somewhere. So how much is it all worth to you?

I cannot copy a file and replace an exiting file:

No messages, not even "file exists"; this includes drags and copy/paste.
Get "file exists" on "Save As.
On "Cut" "Error 0x80070490: Element not found"

I have to physically delete the file and paste the new one. This is not a protection problem, it is just a simple text file that I created for the test in 2 different folders. This is the first time I have ever seen this including Win 3.1. Thanks....

My system = win 7 64 bit.
I have system and core programs on SSD 128GB drive c:
Big mistake, so many programs and applications will only install on drive C.
This is a problem I have with many installers.
I specify another drive for installing the program and half of it ends up on the SSD drive regardless.
Logitech 920 webcam latest version is a good example.

Anyway, it is a constant nuisance trying to keep the 128GB drive clean. Constantly it is out of memory and I end up spending hours trying to clean it off. Sadly, the SSD will fill to the point of zero memory. This means I cannot delete the program that caused the memory problem, because it needs a token amount of memory to uninstall. I end up deleting from the folders, etc., leaving a mess behind.

I bought a new SATA II drive 1.8 TB and I plan to install it as the system C partition on the drive and possibly a D partition for data storeage.

I could use some help or links to help. I would like to leave everything intact from the SSD drive and just relocate it to this new drive. I was hoping not to have to reinstall everything new. I am not sure that a clone of the SSD drive will work properly.

Anyway, I am open to any suggesions, pointers and links to information. In the meanwhile, I will keep searching on my own as well. I always appreciate this forums, it has saved me so much time and grief over the past couple of years.

A:Replace 128GB SSD move system programs data to boot from 1.8TBSATA II

Well the more I have searched the more I realize I don't have things configured to work as they should. The SSD made a huge difference in boot performance and in programs that are located on the SSD. I should be looking for ways to config my system to prevent applications from installing in the SSD.

I'm working on that now, but the results I've found are not very conclusive from what I've read.

I'm making this reply, first because I cannot delete the posting, and second because the best practice will probably be for me keep the SSD as boot drive and find some workarounds for preventing applications from installing in the SSD. There are many applications that don't allow custom installs or the installers aren't working as they should. I've got to find a way to move those installed programs onto the larger HDD after they install themselves on the SSD. I know this can be done. Maybe, someone can give me a link or something along those lines.

When I drag a file into a folder that has a similarly named file, I am asked to either "Copy and Replace" or "Don't Copy".

I would love it if there was a third option "Copy and Rename". I would get so much done so much faster.

I'm hoping there is some kind of registry tweak I can do to get this working. Perhaps holding down a key while dragging the file over will open up more options. I hope there is a way.

(Specifically, I open Firefox, I get to a website, I drag the URL to a folder on my desktop for later reading. The next URL will have a similar "file name". When I drag it to the folder, thats when I run into a problem. If only Windows 7 would give me the option to "Copy and Rename".)

A:I want to Copy & Rename, not Copy & Replace

The copy and rename is the bottom option. "Copy, but keep both files"
However, what you are looking for has to do with Firefox, Firefox handles this differently.

hello there,
i baught a used pc which had a windows xp os on it. lately i started getting messages that the os is not legal and it's pretty annoying. since i have a genuine windows xp at home (from my old pc) i want to install it instead of the existing one. this arroused a few questions which i hope you will help me with:
1. since i don't want to format the hard disc is it possible to install without doing so?
2. if it is possible, will it delete all my programs and other personal data/settings (such as favorites, email on outlook express etc.)?
3. how can i find out what drivers i will need in order to install them after i'm done and where can i get them?
4. is there anything else i should think of before doing this that i haven't mentioned?

A:Installing legit copy of Windows to replace illegal one

Why don't you make the hard drive from your old pc to become master HDD (on your old pc) and the hard drive from the new one make it slave and format it? If you need anything from the new one just delete its C-partition and leave the other intact. Logon to your windows, move what you need on your hard drive and then delete the remaining partitions one the new drive. Or if you need something on C-drive you can make this hard drive slave, logon, move things to your old hard drive and then - format the whole HDD. If I was you I'd do so. I can't explain it better, let's hope you've understood me.
And to make them master and slave all you have to do is to move the jumpers on the disks.

one thing I can't understand why they still have not fixed the file replace bug.

copy a file to a server - you get the confirm file replace dialog then a second later the copying dialog pops up over it.

Been the same since XP...

why can't this all be in the same dialog?

Not to quote a different OS - but apple has a much better file copying system - copy dialogs are all grouped together with confirmations grouped.

A:Copy dialogs pop up over Confirm File Replace Dialog

I heard robocopy/fastcopy/richcopy is much faster due to multi threaded (high queue depth) copying so I wanted to give it a try.

thing is going through cmd typing all folder directories as well as at times unable to type everything due to Chinese and Korean characters in a lot of my files/folders I find it impossible to make this work. I wanted to replace window context menu default "cut, copy and paste", or at least add new context menu for it for robocopy.

means if I just right click on the files, it'll have window copy, cut and robo copy, cut and when i right click empty space for paste it'll have window paste, and robo copy paste.

this way I dont have to worry about typing everything and use of this becomes realistically faster.

just where and how do I start?

A:add, or replace copy, cut, paste with robocopy in context menu?

Robocopy was never intended to replace the traditional copy/ paste function. It's a strict folder copier...not file copier. The best way to use it is for backups from a. BAT file.

[I need to know if there is a function...perhaps a Macro or Query...or a more complex 'Find & Replace'...that can accomplish the following...'cause my database is huge; & I'm hoping not to do this manually]:

I keep an Access database for my homeowners' association on the condition & conformity of 24 different exterior attributes, for about 2400 townhomes. The Board of Directors wants to move away from using the term "Grandfathered", which is distinguished by the acronym "GF" in the database column that shows conformity (labeled IAW). We use this database to generate annual architectural reports for our 10,000 residents.

Our board wants the entry "GF" replaced with a "Y"...they want the GF entry removed from the report completely; & they're serious about it.

Now...I have already created a Query that has located all the GF entries in their various columns of various records...which our Board wants me to use in an internal "in-office" database (in order to keep track of what attributes actually were grandfathered originally...as a reference for our field inspector when he inspects the townhomes).

But we also want to create an unassuming symbol on the report...perhaps an ~ or a *...something that will alert the inspector to an attribute that once was grandfathered, on his field report. [This is to be done so that he will not

We have a TON of text based INI files for our companies software deployment scripts.

We also have a TON of people who use different ways to deploy the same software. On one server alone we can have a bunch of different ways people install E.G.

msiexec.exe /quiet /norestart /i \\dfs\dfsshare\SAV\Symant~1.msi
msiexec.exe /quiet /norestart /i <qt/>\\server\share\WIN32\Symantec Client Security.msi<qt/>
msiexec.exe /quiet /norestart /i \\server\share\SAV\WIN32\Symantec Client Security.msi
msiexec.exe /quiet /norestart /i <qt/>\\dfs\dfsshare\SAV\Symantec Client Security.msi<qt/>

and so on down the line.

I LIKE the abilities of Ecobyte Replace Text 2.2 but the problem is I have to type in the whole line as it is in the file to then replace it with the new one for the new deployment.

What I want to do is have a search based on PART of the line so I can then put in Symant~1.msi and Symantec Client Security.msi and replace the ENTIRE line with a new line.

Is there any multi file utility that allows you to search for part of a text line but replace the entire text line?

Ok now its been a while since my pc has not been working. Ive had it for just over a year now. One day i turned it on and it would get to the Bios splash page but it would not go any further. There were no beeps nothing. All fans run, and from what i remember hard drives would start spinning too.

I thought maybe it was a PSU problem as the PSU would have very subtle flickering sounds, almost like sparking cables. However after taking the PSU to a technician they said it was working fine. This cost me 50 AUD! What he then told me was that it may be the mobo. But before i go and send it to a proper technician and fork out X amount of money id like to get your opinion.

As i mentioned above. The pc turns on, doesnt boot past the BIOS splash screen and just stays there. There are odd noises from the PSU. Here is my setup:

ASUS A8N32-SLI Deluxe
AMD Athlon64 4000+
PC-3200 (2x1gb) CAS2 Corsair DDR mem
Radeon X800 GTO (Iceturbo 2)
Thermaltake 680w power supply
Maxtor 300gb Maxline III
WD Raptor 36GB
Creative Audigy 2 ZS

I have not had the guts to take anything out and test them individually. But has anyone had or heard of this problem before? What could it be about the motherboard that would also make the PSU make that noise? Is it just a safety mechanism of the PSU?

A:To replace or not to replace.. that is the question.

Hi and welcome to Techspot!!

Test the RAM sticks individually. One of them might be bad. You can use Memtest86 to try them out.

Also, try them in different memory slots. That sometimes helps.

I ask because I purchased a Lenovo laptop (Ideapad 580N) that came pre-installed with Windows 8 which is a nightmare. I recently upgraded to 8.1 because it supposedly had some Win 7 features, instead, it has been worse than Win 8. I've never removed one Win OS and replaced it with another and I have not purchased the Win 7 OS software yet. Is there anything I should know beforehand? Friends computer, Windows XP Home. She's been having trouble with it restarting on her a bunch lately, but she was always able to at least get to the Desktop before it rebooted without any error message or countdown (like the 0:60 blaster countdown).
When I was finally able to take a look at the computer, it won't even get to the windows loading screen. I'm thinking the HDD is dead or not able to boot from some reason. The drive will not boot. Gives a blue error message after the bios POST. Bios can check the drive and it fails. I tried putting a disc in which I 'thought' was a bootable PartitionMagic disc, but it's not booting to it. So I'll try using a bootable copy of Partition Magic and see what it is before we buy a new drive.
Any ideas? If the drive is not bootable now, is it worth trying the PartitionMagic disc? I'm sure the disc I put in before was just a backupdisc that wasn't bootable and had the program's setupfiles on it.
Thanks in advance.

At random, XP will restart on its own. The computer was built less than 2 years ago and I'm not quite sure if it's a software or hardware issue. AMD 2600+, 1.9 ghz, 512mb RAM, windows XP, radeon 9600 graphics card.

I find the computer crashes when it's put under a heavy workload. For instance, I opened Spy Bot S&D to rule out any infections and within 30 seconds of running the application the computer restarted. This occured back to back just moments ago. Other times I am using WORD or browsing. This has been occuring for more than 4 months now.

I've ran a CPU application to max it out and again the computer restarts. It occurs everytime I run the program.

I also monitored my RAM while it performed and only 50% was being utilized.

How do I know it's the CPU and not the Motherboard or HD?

A:Do I need to replace my CPU?

Spobot Killed the Computer in the Den with the Fireplace Poker

This isn't "Clue" we're paying, you say?

Spybot uses 100% of the CPU. Your box could be entering thermal cutoff.
Use canned air to clean out the CPU/ heatsink, and just for good measure the rest of the insides as well.
Find out if your board has hardware monitoring and find what the critical zone temperatures are. You may have to install either the board manufacturers monitoring software or a utility like "Speedfan', available here at Techspot.

A:Do I need to replace the HD?

Maybe not. Lets focus on your "low voltage problem". Bad power can cause data corruption. Bad power can also permanently kill off hardware, such as a hard drive. We need to first establish if you solved your power issues, and how.

Did you replace the Power Supply? If so, please post manufacturer, model # and rated power output of your current PSU. If not, post the voltages as reported in BIOS.

So, the story is, I have a 60gb ssd drive, for my windows 7 installation. (win 7 pro x64). Although I am keeping every possible software installed in my D: drive, after 2 years of use, the ssd drive is getting very low on space. I am constantly removing useless stuff and regularly declutter it but still.
(Right now there are only 2gb of free space, and since I ll be needing to install Visual studio soon, I ll need at least 5-6 gb more).
So, the question is, is there a way to change the drive but still keep everything as it is without the need of a clean install? Would an application like norton's ghost do the trick?
(sorry if ghost is obsolete for the past 10 years, but that was the last time I needed something like it).
Thanks a lot

Hi, I have a question with E-mail.
I was wondering if after the 2 years I've had this computer if I should change from my Yahoo! & Gmail accounts to Windows Mail, if that's possible.
What are the pro's and con's of switching to Windows Mail?

A:Should I Replace...

Hi Rance, I am unsure about Yahoo but you can access Gmail via Windows Mail. To use Windows mail you still need a provider whether it be your internet provider or the likes of Gmail so i dont see any reason to change anything except enabling your provider from within Windows mail. Here is a tutorial on enabling pop gmail within windows mail

About 3 nights ago I was at my PC and my wife came to say goodnight and dropped a glass of water on it, soaking everything. I manually turned it off right away, dismantled it and left it beside a radiator for about 30 hours (far enough away that it wouldn't burn anything). It looked dry all over so I reassembled it, put in a different psu just to be safe and turned it on, something immediately smoked for a split second and I turned it back off. I didn't get time to see what it was. I've tried restarting again and it runs with no post.
No beeps but fans running and lights are all on as normal. I tried replacing the battery and looked for any signs of anything that has burned or blown.
Still no beeps, even with just cpu. All power cables are where they are meant to be.
I am quite a noob but am about 90% sure it is the motherboard and have ordered a replacement to test. Is there anything simple I am missing or is it more likely to be the cpu or gpu?

Also, the PC now starts and restarts twice before running constantly with no post, not sure why or if this is helpful or not. Any thoughts on this would be much appreciated. I want to spend as little as possible on replacing stuff as it is only a month old and my warranty won't cover a clumsy wife

Should i replace my 3 month old power supply? I have no issues with it, but am a little worried because it was a "cheap" one.

Its a HEC/ winpower 850 watt.

Ive read a few reviews about HEC power supplys in general and they seem to get pretty good reviews. My pc needs around 575 watts to run according to my gpu manual. Does anyone have any experience with this brand??

Thanks in advance!

I have a Thinkpad twist 33476UU with a failed controller for the 500gb HD. I've read that it requires a motherboard replacement which is difficult to do where I live. I ordered a larger 1TB HD model with similar specs from the manufacturer but it is physically too thick to fit in the slot. I've kept it for use as an external HD with an adapter cable. The system defaults to the default 28gb SSD to boot and works very well except for the small size. I'm using a 32GB SD camera-card in the card slot for temporary storage along with a 1TB external. I would like to replace the SSD with either a 128 or larger SSD but need to know if it will fit in the same space. Are different capacity SSD drives the same physical size? Will this work? A related matter is that the Win8 activation apparently didn't follow the boot-from-SSD. How can I activate it? Thanks in advance.

Periodically I'll get a "C++ runtime error" message and an App will have to close. The it drops to the desktop. Under administrative tools > Event viewer the message seems to point to ntdll.dll version 5.1.2600.2180 . That file seems to be a protected file. Does anyone know the procedure to repair or replace this file?

When I installed Win 8 Pro on an old laptop with Win 7 32-bit (dual boot configuration), I do not remember seeing an option for installing either the 32-bit or 64-bit version of Windows 8. My System shows I have 64-bit and I am having trouble locating video drivers for my 6 year old Toshiba Satellite laptop. I found people with a similar problem on an NVidia forum and they put together a 32-bit driver version that supposedly works. I did not mean to install the 64-bit version. Is there a way to do a reinstall, but this time select Win 8 32-bit? Is there an option for it If I just do a clean reinstall?

A:How to replace Win 8 Pro 64-bit with Win 8 Pro 32-bit?

Hello Stan, and welcome to Eight Forums.

The installation of either a 32-bit or 64-bit Windows 8 is dependent on if the installation media is 32-bit or 64-bit.

If you like, you can use the tutorial below to download a 32-bit Windows 8 ISO file from within any 32-bit Windows computer that you can use to create a bootable installation DVD or USB with.

Hope this helps,

it's really work fine if i buy Tray Caddy to insert there the SSD?
after that its will be my hdd 2TB + ssd
what happen with my serial to windows? (i get the windows with the pc)

A:Replace CD ROM in SSD

Should be fine as long as the caddy makes the SSD's SATA connector line up with the connector inside the system.  Your Windows activation/serial number won't be affected, especially if you're also keeping your existing hard drive.  If you're not, you should still be fine. I've swapped hard drives on many systems without encountering activation issues.

I have Windows 64 Bit installed on an SSD Drive. I am running out of Disk space. I have heard that I can make a Image of my existing SSD and import into a new SSD. How do I do this?

A:Replace SSD

Go into control panel>backup and restore and save a disk image to your internal hard drive or an external hard drive. replace the ssd, then just use your windows install disc to put the image back on the new ssd. It`s that easy.

SSD - Install and Transfer the Operating System

Have a friend with a 9-month-old Dell Inspiron laptop who's had nothing but problems with Win XP. We've deleted the main partition and reinstalled XP, but problem (inability to maintain a modem connection) persists. It may be just a bad modem, and Dell is sending a new one, but he just doesn't like XP, and asked if it's possible to put Win 98 on the computer. I use Win 98, so am not familiar with XP, but know that XP uses NTFS instead of a FAT, and can't find anything that says whether or not it's possible to reformat the drive for a FAT-based Win 98 system. Is it, and if so, how (i.e., can I just boot to the command prompt, type "format c:", and hit enter)?

Hi there,

My old computer is very slow and the HDD makes a lot of noise all the time (particularly the C drive), so I thought I'd replace it with an SSD.
The computer has 2 physical disks of approximately 500GB each, and 3 partitions, all primary.
C is where the OS and most program files are stored, D has all the multimedia files and docs, and E (~15GB) is unused.
So my plan was to remove D temporarily, connect the SSD, clone the C drive to the SSD. Then finally I was going to swap the old C drive (HDD) with the new C drive (SSD), add back the D drive, and voila.
Even though the D drive is pretty slow it doesn't bother me as long as it's just a storage drive.

But the problem arose at step 1 i.e. swap the 2nd hard disk with the SSD. Regardless of which of the 2 hard disks I disconnect, the system won't boot.
What I get is a failed status in relation to RAID ID 0. This is confusing. I assume only one of the 2 HDD's is actually bootable, i.e. drive C, isn't that correct? If that's the case, then why can't I simply swap drive D?

So i wasn't sure what this topic fell under but i was hoping i could get some help on this. So i want to start running some higher up games and i'm not sure what is bottle necking me atm. I don't wanna replace both but i do have a $200 budget or so for an upgrade. I heard from someone that my cpu isn't the best but it can still hold up. While my gpu is really outdated and not good. With my current combo i'm able to play most games on highest quality, but for newer games like the witcher 3 and so on, i can barely run it. I was gonna get the geforce gtx 960, thinking that may help my performance. Here are my specs

My specs:

AMD A8-5600K APU with Radeon(tm) HD Graphics (4 CPUs), ~3.6GHz
8192MB RAM
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 650 4B DDR3 memory
