Q: Chromebook 720 keyboard not working. Some keys wor...

Daughter's Chromebook is about a year or so old and the keyboard has stopped working properly. Some keys work, others don't. Type the letter K and get Ki, type the letter s and get sxw, type the letter T and get nothing, and so forth. Tried the Refresh+Power thing but that failed to work. At one point thje keyboard began operating without being touched (!) which suggests a stuck button but couldn't tell which. We're wide open to suggestions.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello! I purchased three refurbished C710-2833 Chromebooks from Groupon in September 2013. Just got to opening the third box since it was intended to be a backup of either of the other two if they failed. Well, one of the other two failed (human error; c'est la vie) and as 'luck' would have it, the third does not function as it should. 14 months later, I am clearly beyond the 90-day warranty period. The third device, when first attempting to log in to my Google account, wouldn't recognize some of the keys I pressed. I plugged in a USB keyboard to log in, and tested the onboard keyboard in a new Google Drive document. The keys that are broken are (or at least, seem) random. With that said, I have the following questions:Has anyone else experienced this same issue with (seemingly) random, broken keys? If so, did you fix it, and how?Is there a schematic/layout for the keyboard assembly (might help me understand why these seemingly random keys don't work)?Acer, will you send me a new Chromebook?^ (the Hail Mary / 'never-know-unless-you-ask' type of question) OK, thanks in advance for your help!  -- Chris T.

I had a problem with my HP Chromebook's keys intermittently not working--the y, m, n, etc.  They would work, then not work, and it was very frustrating esp to log in b/c I could not get my password typed in. I thought I would need a new keyboard, but my wonderful ex husband thought we should try clean and reseat the keyboard connector to the motherboard.  The top panel assembly was removed (after removing the bottom case screws)..   ----see http://support.hp.com/us-en/product/HP-Chromebook-14-x000/7277301/model/7547744/product-info?lang=en... HE cleaned the keyboard connector with isopropyl alcohol, and re-connected that connector and it worked. This may not work for everyone, but try this b/f you buy a new keyboard.

Hello all,

I'm having a bit of trouble with the search feature but so far haven't found any info. I figure to post while I keep looking.
So, I just received my CB 13 and it's a beautiful machine. But when I play audio, at or above 50%, the keys resonate noticeably. The higher the volume goes, the worse it gets. To me, that's totally unacceptable. I used a tone generator to help me pinpoint it and it appears to come from the keys. If I put my hands over the keyboard, it goes away completely. Remove my hand, and it resonates a lot again.
Has anyone experienced this issue with the CB 13?
Also, the trackpad seems a little finicky. I had trouble click and dragging - it would go all over the place.
How does Dell handle exchanges btw? I hope this isn't a common issue across all CB 13s :(

I have had the notebook since Christmas but during the last 24 hours I began getting a faulty response on the y, u, h, j, n, and m keys.  Sometimes they would work on the first try, sometimes I would have to hold them down for several seconds before they would register.  Now they have all completely stopped working.  I looked on other forums but I cannot remove the battery from the laptop or do a hard restart since it operates on Chrome OS.   Is this just a cleaning problem or is there something possibly wrong with the technology inside? -Megan

So it appears after doing some research that the 14"  HP Chromebook has a lot of issues with the keyboards not working. My daughters is a little over a year old and completely quit working today. I can't even power it off!  If this is a common issue why not own up to it and take care of this HP? I have a service plan through Walmart and they are sending me a package to mail it back in 5 days and then who know how long it will take to get it back from there. In the meantime my daughter will be so far behind in school and homework that she will likely never catch up this semester.  Ugh!  Extremely frustrating. My daughter is so upset and crying and she did nothing wrong!

As I wrote in the title, my Shift and Alt keys stopped working for keyboard shortcuts. However, the Shift key still works when capitalizing letters.

I've been dealing with this problem off/on for the past two weeks and haven't been able to figure it out. I've gone into Ease of Access features and turned on/off all of the available options (Mouse Keys, Sticky Keys, Toggle Keys, Filter Keys). I've pressed Shift for 8 seconds, and pressed it 5 times, and still haven't been able to correct it.

Thank you in advance for any help offered.

Possibly helpful additional information:
I've got a Spanish/Latin American keyboard layout installed in addition to the US English keyboard layout. I toggle back and forth with Left Alt + Shift (which is how I noticed my Shift key stopped working).
I play a game whose controls rely on a lot of Shift key pressing and holding.

When was the last time you used a can of air cleaner on the keyboard? If it isn't from contact wear often keyboards tend to get loaded up with dust and debris!

One example of that is having any snacks onhand around a pc where little bits get passed along from your fingers onto and under the keys themselves. Keyboards are known to get loaded up fast with any foods present!

I had a problem with my laptop which is certain key on my keyboard is not functioning. The weird is, it happened without a reason. because after I shutdown doing my work when I turn it on again, I discovered my "s", "d", "g", "h", "\", "m", " left shift", "caps lock" and "~" key did not work at all. I try taking the key off, cleaning underneath, but nothing seems to be working. After that I try to use usb keyboard and it seems the key can be entered. So I thought my hardware is the problem. than I replace into the new one, but still having the same problem. I already waste my money buying new keyboard. Does any one happen to know what sort of problem this is and how I would go about fixing it? Is it related to the registry. My laptop is Acer aspire 4740G, ram 4GB, processor i3 2.4GHz. I have a Dell 7737 laptop and from time to time it develops a firmware glitch where random keys stop working for both BIOS Setup and Operating Systems. After such thing happens neither shutdown (Full shutdown / Fast Boot disabled) nor restart get the keyboard back to a normal state. At this point the only workarround is to disconnect the AC power cord and then either drain the battery or physically remove it.
This laptop's battery cover is not designed for daily removal and it is starting to get loose because of this BIOS bug.
I am running BIOS version A14 but this bug was present since I purchased the laptop with BIOS version A07. Sometimes I cannot even type my password because the random keys that stop working match those it uses.
Please Dell could you provide a BIOS hotfix for this annoying issue?

Hi,

I have an old laptop which I haven't used for a while, but want to start using it. However, the '1' and 'q' keys have stopped working. It hasn't taken a knock and I have removed the two keys, which were on a hinge, and could see no visable reason why they may have stoppped e.g. dirt (nothing more technical than that). The two keys when compressed do feel identical to the others, no signs of anything suck in there. Does anyone have any ideas? And if this type of thing is fixable?

Thanks

A:2 keys not working on keyboard?

Keyboards seem to drive their keys in diagonal rows. IE:
1qaz
2wsx
3edc, etc.

Since your 2 keys are consecutive in a diagonal row, we get the connection. The most suggested things are physically cleaning the membrane under the keys, and keyboard drivers. I have never owned a laptop, so I'm not sure you can just delete the keyboard driver, and let windows redetect. Or, just remove, and install the currect driver. Hopefully someone with laptop experience will be along with more info. A Guy

Welcome chinwoman to the windows 7 forums.

Based on your trouble shooting so far, it looks like your notebook keyboard is toast.

there could be a single wire from your keyboard that has a loose connection or broken off.
My recommendation is to get it replaced. If your technically inclined, most laptops keyboards can be removed and the flat ribbon connection can be cleaned. I would try that if your comfortable with removing your keyboard, other than that, it looks like your going to have to take it to a repair shop which most likely will do the same thing, or replace it.

I have a Dell Inspiron 11 3000 series 2 in 1 laptop and recently (within the past few days), some of the keys on my keyboard are not working when I start up the laptop. After my laptop has been on for a few minutes, they seem to work fine but they still randomly stop working for a few seconds at a time. For instance, they are working just fine right now. The keys that do this are all close together on the keyboard (which I feel like that has something to do with it) and are listed below.
p 0 - [ ; '
I should also point out that the keys are not broken or loose. I'm only guessing that this is a hardware problem and that it can be fixed if I have tools or something, but I'm not a tech wizard, so I don't know for sure.
Any help would be appreciated! Thank you!

Try using the Windows on-screen keyboard. If you are seeing a space where your spacebar should be in the on-screen keyboard, then you'll need to change your keyboard layout back to US QWERTY (or whatever layout you type on.)

If the OSK looks fine, then check this page for help. If you've attached an external keyboard to your laptop in the past, refer to the first post. If not, you can try to attempt the second post.

Recently also the delete key on the top of the keyboard (next to prt sc) is no longer working. In the device manager 2 keyboards are mentioned: - HID keyboard (seems to be my USB mouse) - standard PS/2 keyboardAny suggestions for solving this problem? Should I replace any driver?N.B.: compared to my other laptops (Toshiba and MSI) the HP Envy 17 is one package of trouble sofar. I really regret buying this laptop.

Hi,
I have an Acer laptop with a USB keyboard. All worked perfectly until I updated Win 8.1 to Win 10. Now my Page Up, Up key and Left Arrow do not work.
They work fine on the actual laptop keyboard just not the USB keyboard.
The keyboard works fine when attached to my other laptop (running Win 7) but these keys do not work on the Acer with Win 10.
I have updated drivers.
Any advice?
Thanks

You have two options: stop using the USB keyboard with the Win 10 computer or roll back to the former OS and wait a few more months to try Win 10 and see if it has better drivers.

I have a friend :D that has a problem with certain keyboard keys not working. Such as;

The numbers across the top of the keys - 1,2,3,4,8,9,0.
If he holds down the shift key, still nothing on those numbers.
Various random letters also not working.

Swaps out keyboards, tries a couple others, no change.

This has happened to him before. They only solution in the past was to reformat. System restore doesn't fix it either...

Any suggestions? Ideas?

What type of keyboard is it? Try the website of the keyboard manufacturer (or the computer manufacturer) and see if they have any keyboard software/drivers you can download and install.

All of a sudden, while iam composing an email on hotmail, certain keys of my desktop keyboard stopped working...i assumed that once i restart it the issue would be resolved. I was mistaken. I have restarted my desktop computer, unplugged the keyboard from the cpu and start my pc up again, however the same issues persists. Most keys are functioning on my keyboard, but certain keys give no response. My num pad is not working, and the num lock green light doesnt even light up when i push down on it. Now the problem is, i cant log into my desktop windows xp, mainly because my password contains a 7 in it. None of the keys work on the numpad, however a few numbers do work from the main keyboard component. I have no idea what to do. I tried pressing f8 to go into safe mood but nothing happens. Please help. Thank you

Sounds like it's time to buy a new keyboard! If you're determined to get this one to work you can try washing it with warm water, then let it sit for a couple days to dry out, and try it again, but if I were you I'd just eat the $10
