Outlook/Outlook Express Problems

Q: Outlook/Outlook Express Problems

I just recently bought a new computer. It came with a trial version of Office 2003 which includes Outlook. My old computer used Outlook Express. I have been trying to import my dbx files from OE into the new O but it just won't cooperate with me. I have tried both methods recommended to me and both have failed. It appears I need to have OE installed on my new computer for either way to work. I haven't been able to download it because it won't let me download on older version of IE6. The XP service pack doesn't have it. I am unsure what do to at this point.

I tried this method: http://www.directron.com/movmail.html

And this one: http://www.outlook-express-backup.com/
To make matters worse, the OE on my old computer won't let me export using the program export function. I downloaded OE again hoping it would correct the problem. It didn't work.

Is there something I can do or do I need to delete 4 years worth of email. (Some of it is useless, but some of it is important.)

Any help would be greatly appreciately.

Preferred Solution: Outlook/Outlook Express Problems

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Good day;
I have followed all directions in the "read this first" post. I pretty much do that every week or so anyhow.
Anyway, the problem. Recently on MS Outlook, when I check my mail, I find I have 10-20 messages in there from either, Postmaster Hotmail, Mail delivery Service, Mail Delivery System or Mail Administrator with a Subject line saying either "Mail System Error-Returned mail or Delivery Status Notification or Undelivered Mail-Return to Sender and a few others. The text of the message is along these lines:

I have no idea who these people are.
I am religous in running my updated AdawareSE, Spybot S&D, SpywareBlaster and also have EZ Anti-virus which is updated and has recently picked up a lot of incoming viruses via emails. I dont open any emails from Addees I do not know. I have run online AV scans and have not found anything. I also have Kerio Personal Firewall.
I am totally up to date with all WinXPSP2 updates as well as MS Office 2003 updates
Any idea why I am getting all this garbage.

I have been using Outlook Express 6 which seems to be working fine. However, I wanted to switch to Outlook. When I try to install Outlook, I get a message that "Outlook Express 5 or higher needs to be installed." It is installed and working.
When I boot up the computer, I get a message that "Outlook Express has been removed and asks if I want to remove related files." I don't want to lose all of my stuff in Outlook Express, so I say "No" and the system continues with boot-up.
I am running Windows XP Pro with 2.53 GHz system and 1.00 GHz RAM. I have scanned for Adware, and Spyware and run a good antivirus program (Avast) which is kept up to date. I am also using Office XP.
Can someone please assist with this or will I have to do a complete "format" and start over.
Thanks for any assistance.

Looks like no answers to this one. However, I found the problem as below :
"This happens after setting the IsInstalled flags to 0, as a part of the suggestion in article Q318378. But, after reinstallation of Internet Explorer, the IsInstalled value should change to 1 automatically. If that does not happen, manually edit the registry and set the value to 1 in both of these locations

Outlook Express

Outlook Express is their preferred "Default" Mail handler and I have set
it up to be so.

The problems are these:

When connecting (Dial up ISP) Outlook automatically receives Mail without being opened (can hear the mail received notification).

Outlook Express was set up with two Identities, but all mail is going to just one identity.
In other words ALL mail is going into one Identity's mailbox, thus mixing up the mail and not separating it.

I checked Identities again, and it appears to be set correctly, so I don't know why all mail is defaulting to the one Identity's mailbox.

I am not familiar with Outlook or Outlook Express as I don't use those programs much, but know enough to set them up.

Can't figure this one out, please help if you have any ideas, thanks.

I am an old guy. I tend to like Outlook Express. Some years ago I finally got it customized in terms of text size and layout the way I like. I am used to it. But, it seems to have some kind of fatal flaw - that every year or so MS OUtlook Express's InBox gets corrupted and makes either or both sending or receiving email no longer possible. It is as if after working properly for a year or two the InBox file gets to a certain size and goes haywire. Is there any remedy for this? Is there a more stable version of Outlook Express or another mail program that is very similar but more stable than OE that I can import my settings into?

can anyone give me a step by step description, how i can export my Emails and the Address book from Outlook Express 6 to another Computer which runs also Outlook Express 6?
I tried already to export the Address book but it only allows me to export it as a *.csv-File and after i put the data on my usb stick and try to import it on my new computer by File - Import - Addressbook, the program keeps asking me for a *.wab-File? (btw: i can only use the: "Text File (Comma Separated Values))" Option, when exporting the address book.

Export and Import from email messages doesn't work either.

Has anyone a really step-by-step description how to do this??

Thank you very much in advance for your help

A:Solved: Import & Export from Outlook Express 6 to Outlook Express 6

Hi wizzle2003

When you are ready to Import the .csv file on the destination computer,
In Outlook Express,
File > Import > Other Address Book
You should then be given the option to choose a Text File (Comma Separated Values)
Then Browse to the .csv file to complete the Import.
Enable Show Hidden Files and folders:

Open My Computer,
Tools > Folder Options > View tab,
under Hidden Files and Folders, verify Show Hidden Files and Folders is selected.
Remove the check mark for Hide Extensions for known file types.
To locate the directory where Outlook Express keeps it's message store:
Tools > Options > Maintenance tab > Store Folder
Note the location, then Cancel out of the window.

Navigate to that directory, copy all the .dbx files to a folder on the Desktop.
Copy those files to a folder on the Desktop of the destination computer.
If you are using a Flash drive to transfer the files, it may take a couple of transfers to complete.

Once all the .dbx files are on the Destination computer,
Open Outlook Express,
Tools > Import > Messages > Microsoft Outlook Express 6 > Next
Select: Import mail from an OE 6 store directory
Click: OK
Browse to the folder containing the .dbx files on the Desktop.
When you reach the Finish button,
You should see a "Congratulations Your data was successfully imported"

If there is more than one Identity in Outlook Express, switch to the other Identities in Outlook Express and repeat the steps above.

I recently changed from dial up to dsl. I have been having problems with getting my email through outlook express. It will allow me to check it maybe 20% of the time. The rest of the time I get a connection to the server failed error. So is this something on my end causing this or a problem with the server at my isp.

A:Outlook Express Problems

I'm no guru, but I would venture to say it's an ISP server problem. Give them a call and tell them what's going on. They're going to first assume it's a problem with your computer and make you do a lot of what you've already checked, but be patient. Double check all your settings beforehand.

Welcome to Tech Support Guy Forums!

Drag the window for the e-mail message to the size you want it, then close the window, the next message should open up to the size you set.
Using the maximize button does not retain the settings for a maximized message.
If you save the .pps file to the Desktop, can you open it then?

I have just purchased a new PC loaded with XP. I am having a minor but annoying problem with Outlook Express v.6. I have three separate identities and I am on cable access (cox.net). About 50% of the time, when I try to shift from one identity to another, the current email page disappears like it is going to shift to the new identity but that identity does not come back on the screen. When I double click the Outlook Express icon it grinds away for about 10 second and then stops. I have to reboot each time this happens in order to get to the other identity.

Of course, this is slow and annoying. I have found that if I wait about 10-15 seconds it has never done this. If I try to immediately double click the new identity or do not wait the 10 seconds it will almost always disappear. I thought originally that it might be having trouble finding the identity but they appear to be set up correctly. Any ideas?

On a separate issue, is there any reason one particular recipient of my email would not receive the email if I send it as a blind copy? She can receive if it is sent in the open but not blind. It happens with just one recipient. Many thanks for any help.

Having lot of probs. with Outlook Ex. When sending e-mails with attachments, I usually get the following message:

"An unknown error has occurred. Subject 'another test Family of Marie Catherine Jensen.doc [3/3]', Account: '[email protected]', Server: 'smtp.comcast.net', Protocol: SMTP, Server Response: '554 Suspicious message', Port: 587, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 554, Error Number: 0x800CCC6F"

The mail sits in my outbox, but multiple copies go to the recipient. The attachments can't be opened, & trying to do so yields a box that says "Unknown File Type." Clicking "Open" yields this message: "This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an association file in the Folder Options in the Control Panel."

This doesn't always occur. Rarely, I send an e-mail with an attachment that goes thru OK. Sometimes an e-mail with an attachment yields the above message, produces multiple copies with unreadable attachments, & also produces 1 copy with a readable attachment (that usu. goes straight into my Delete box if sent to myself). It's easy to spot messages with unreadable attachments, as they appear with the attachment name after the subject, & 2 numbers separated by a slash in square brackets - as in line 1 of the error message above. Only the Subject appears when all goes well.

I changed a friend's XP system to use OE instead of Mozilla's EMail handler, so that I could more easily help her (she's 88 years old and without any experience). When I visited her a week ago, her Inbox had several messages, which (together) we answered, but left in the Inbox, so that she could just click on them to reply. I noticed today that there was only one message remaining in the Inbox, and nothing in the Deleted Items folder. This lady would not know how to delete messages, and no one else has access to the system. If anyone has any idea how this could happen, please share it with me.

Secondly, I noticed that that OE continued to report that 'There is one unread message in your Inbox' even after we had read it several times, for some length of time. (I didn't think to check how long a message would remain 'unread' during reading. I'll do that next time. But no one changed that setting since I was there a week ago, and the problem didn't exist then.)

Finally, I'm unable, on her system, to access (old) EMails that I copied onto her file system, containing info of interest to her, like URLs to interesting websites, etc. After I set her system to use OE instead of Mozilla's EMail handler, and deleted the latter (via Control Panel), OE is now her EMail handler, and is activated when I click on an EMail file in her file system. But, unlike the OE on my XP system at home, the EMail is never displayed. OE just sh... Read more

You need to do some reading, your habits appear to be the cause
of your problems.

1. How do I back up my Outlook Express? in this article

Also a complete website dedicated to Windows email clients

NEVER store emails for a long period of time in any of the default folders
(Inbox/Outbox/Sent Items/Deleted Items/Draft). Make custom folders.

You do not want to turn off compacting but be careful to do it properly
or it will cause problems. Don't touch your computer until it is done.
No clicking, no game playing. Manual maintenance should be done on a
regular basis. Only when you are OFFLINE. Or if you click File and
choose Work offline.

Click File->Folder. Then choose Compact All Folders. This will optimize
the DBX files. Optimizing takes out all the wasted space.

You don't mention if you use anti-virus email scanning - but if you do, at
the least disable it. It isn't needed.

I know, it is a lot of reading but you will be happier once you have that

Hi. I wrote a few days about about a problem I have with the margins on OE 6.0. When I print an email message someone has sent me, the left margin is cut off by about 3 spaces. I can't find anywhere to adjust the left margin. I have no idea why it suddenly did this. Any thoughts.

Another brand new problem is that when I click on a link inside an email message, it takes me to IE 6.0 but IE does not actually load. It just sits there doing nothing. This is very inconvenient of course because I have to copy any embedded URL and then paste in on an open IE 6.0.

I would sure appreciate any thoughts you might have.

Do you have Norton Anti-Virus? Are you scanning emails?

Scanning of email is not necessary, per the experts.
Quote from Symantec:

Is my computer still protected against viruses if I disable Email Scanning?
Disabling Email Scanning does not leave you unprotected against viruses
that are distributed as email attachments. Norton AntiVirus Auto-Protect
scans incoming files as they are saved to your hard drive, including email
and email attachments. Email Scanning is just another layer on top of this
To make sure that Auto-Protect is providing the maximum protection,
keep Auto-Protect enabled and run LiveUpdate regularly to ensure that
you have the most recent virus definitions.

And this from Steve Cochran, noted expert...

Antivirus software invades the Outlook Express program to try and intercept
(incoming and, in some cases, outgoing) messages that might contain virus.

The problem with this approach is that the antivirus software can trigger
the destruction of an entire message folder or the entire message store,
when it attempts to remove a message containing a potential virus.

To prevent the possibility of such destruction occuring, turn off email
scanning in your antivirus software. You will still be protected against
infection. If you attempt to open a message attachment containing a
potential virus, then your antivirus software will recognize that your are
attempting to infect your system, and will block you from doing so. The
best practice on the user's part is... Read more

You could try a system restore.

Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore.

Select a date just prior to your problem starting. All of your data will be OK you will, however, lose any up-dates software installations since the restored date.

It sounds like the shortcut has been deleted from the Start, Programs so just make a short cut on your desktop or where ever you want it to "C:\Program Files\Outlook Express\msimn.exe" or where ever your msimn.exe exists on your computer. You can do a search or find to find that executible file, or from your search you can right click and drag which will give you the option of creating a short cut or moving and I strongly suggest creating a shortcut.

Hi all, I am hoping that the answer to krazeecrw's problem can help me also.

I am having a similar problem in Windows XP SP2. In my case, in IE 6.0 whenever I choose "source" under the "View" menu, nothing happens. It doesn't matter which program I choose under the "tools, internet options, programs, HTML Editor" menu, i.e. notepad, word, or my html editing package, nothing happens when I select "view, source".

I don't get any error messages or any other indication that something is wrong. The only indication is that a new window with the source displayed doesn't open. I have turned off my pop-up blocker and don't have any other programs running in IE, so I don't think it's a 3rd party add-on issue.

Not sure if my issue and krazeecrw's Outlook problem are related, but there does seem to be enough similarities that I think they could be.

I want to share my experience with problems offer appearing using the OutLook Express mail program.
The "default" folders "Inbox", "Sent items" and "Out box" they get often corrupted.
Recently my messages in "Outbox" trying to send were not moved from the "Outbox" to the "Sent items" folder. These messages were actually sent again and again by OE, without me to know if they were sent or not. After reading a lot of forums and articles, I decided to do the following.
After I copied all messages of these folders to other "user made" folders, I closed the OE.
I located these "default" folders with Windows Explorer and I deleted them.
When opening again the OE, these "default" folders "Inbox", "Sent items" and "Out box" are automatically regenerated and have them now fresh and uncorrupted.
Do this from time to time and your OE is always in good shape.

I am using Windows XP and I have upgraded to MS Office 2003 .

Before the recent upgrade and after, I continue to have problems with Outlook Express 6.

Here is the error message:

There was a problem logging onto your mail server. Your Password was rejected. Account: 'pophm.sympatico.ca', Server: 'pophm.sympatico.ca', Protocol: POP3, Server Response: '-ERR command failed', Port: 995, Secure(SSL): Yes, Server Error: 0x800CCC90, Error Number: 0x800CCC92

I am using Bell Sympatico as my server and I can access my email through the web site, however, I would prefer to use Outlook Express 6. Sympatico support does not extend beyond their interface with the web. They will check on the back end to see if all is well, but when it comes to working with Outlook Express 6 other than assisting on setting up the account, they will go no further.

Any assistance you may proved would be helpful.

i have Windows ME, with the newest edition of Microsoft Outlook. Every time I get an e-mail with an attachment, I got a message on top of the e-mail saying, "OE removed access to the following unsafe attachments in your mail:..." I'd understand this, if the file had a virus, but it does it for all incoming e-mails I get. How can I disable this.

Thanks a bunch,

You say you have "the latest version of Microsoft Outlook", yet your question relates to Outlook Express.
These are two totally separate applications, so I will assume at this stage you mean Outlook Express.

Unitick "Do not allow attachments to be saved or opened ......"

If your question relates to Outlook, then post back.

Hi, I'll try to explain this the best that I can...

Basically, I set up a new identity in Outlook Express for a new email address of mine. I have no problem with the default identity. But for this new one, I can log in, recieve messages, but not send them.

Everytime I try, I get this error message:

The message could not be sent because one of the recipients was rejected by the server. The rejected e-mail address was email address removed. Subject 'Re: Hello', Account: 'mail.additionagencies.co.uk', Server: 'smtp.additionagencies.co.uk', Protocol: SMTP, Server Response: '554 Recipient Rejected: Relay access denied', Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 554, Error Number: 0x800CCC79

I know it's not the recieving email that's the problem, because it won't let me send to ANY address with this identity. Maybe I didn't set it up right?

Can anyone help please?

For the last day or two when I click on a link sent in an email it takes me directly to C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator. The only thing that I can think of that has changed lately is that an application required that I download MSIE 7. Any ideas?

i dont know why but my OE wont work for some reason

theres a page with screenshots of what im doing.

i realised that in the File menu it there was a tick next to 'Work Offline', i thought that might be why the emails stayed in the outbox so i click on it to remove the tick but it says 'Unable to connect to server' and goes back to being ticked

help appreciated

I recently install System Mechanic 6 Professional. I do not know if it is just a coincidence but after this was installed, I am now unable to click on a link which is in my received emails and be taken to the site. I can still copy it and then paste in internet explorer and be taken to the site. Does anyone know what has happened here and how to correct this?

Hey guys, im having problems sending and receiving emails in Outlook Express.

Everytime i try to send and receive emails, i keep getting this message.

A:Problems with Outlook Express 6

This is usually indicative of a bad username or password. Check those first.

If you're confident you've got it right, did you recently check your firewall settings- Try disabling your windows firewall entirely and trying to send/receive again

I've looked everywhere for solutions for this problem but to no avail, so any help would be really appreciated!

I use outlook express for email and I can receive emails fine and with no problems but now when i try to send an email I get an error message (530) when sending them saying that "the server rejected the sender's email address".

I've tried changing the settings under accounts, servers, authentication required (this fixed a similar problem before) but nothing is working now.
Please can anyone help?
Thanks in advance!

When sending to a group, the message won't go out if one e-mail address is wrong . In the past I would just get a returned mail message for one or two bad addresses , now no one gets the message and each time it says a different one is wrong. I keep deleting the "bad address", but wondered if this was a checked choice made somewhere . I have looked at all the options & preferences that I could find. The machine did have to go to the shop recently with a virus and is now all updated and virus free , could the OE have been corrupted somehow?

Hello to all

I have Outlook Express 6 and it is really starting to bug me

I tried to send a file twice to a freind with an attachment that was too big (23 Mb)

So Outlook told me this and it had me cancel the sending of both files, so i thought ok, I'll have to send it to him another way, no problems

But then when I went into Outlook again later, it was still trying to send the two messages I said to cancel earlier and it won't load my new messages until it is done going through the same process as the first time

Which is it sends (this is super slow and takes like 10 minutes) then it tells me it can't, then I have to press cancel.

I go through this same process everytime and still wants to send these messages.

Is there a way to stop this?

Thank you

T Lanstrom
