Outlook/Outlook Express Problems

Q: Outlook/Outlook Express Problems

I just recently bought a new computer. It came with a trial version of Office 2003 which includes Outlook. My old computer used Outlook Express. I have been trying to import my dbx files from OE into the new O but it just won't cooperate with me. I have tried both methods recommended to me and both have failed. It appears I need to have OE installed on my new computer for either way to work. I haven't been able to download it because it won't let me download on older version of IE6. The XP service pack doesn't have it. I am unsure what do to at this point.

I tried this method: http://www.directron.com/movmail.html

And this one: http://www.outlook-express-backup.com/
To make matters worse, the OE on my old computer won't let me export using the program export function. I downloaded OE again hoping it would correct the problem. It didn't work.

Is there something I can do or do I need to delete 4 years worth of email. (Some of it is useless, but some of it is important.)

Any help would be greatly appreciately.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Good day;
I have followed all directions in the "read this first" post. I pretty much do that every week or so anyhow.
Anyway, the problem. Recently on MS Outlook, when I check my mail, I find I have 10-20 messages in there from either, Postmaster Hotmail, Mail delivery Service, Mail Delivery System or Mail Administrator with a Subject line saying either "Mail System Error-Returned mail or Delivery Status Notification or Undelivered Mail-Return to Sender and a few others. The text of the message is along these lines:
This Message was undeliverable due to the following reason:

I am religous in running my updated AdawareSE, Spybot S&D, SpywareBlaster and also have EZ Anti-virus which is updated and has recently picked up a lot of incoming viruses via emails. I dont open any emails from Addees I do not know. I have run online AV scans and have not found anything. I also have Kerio Personal Firewall.
I am totally up to date with all WinXPSP2 updates as well as MS Office 2003 updates
Any idea why I am getting all this garbage.

I recently did an upgrade from Win ME to WinXP Pro on my Mom's computer
Dell Dimension 8100
Not sure of specs exactly but- (sorry)
2.6Mhz P4
512MB Ram

*pretty much stock Dell components for this system*

I installed Outlook
Outlook Express

Outlook Express is their preferred "Default" Mail handler and I have set
it up to be so.

The problems are these:

When connecting (Dial up ISP) Outlook automatically receives Mail without being opened (can hear the mail received notification).

Outlook Express was set up with two Identities, but all mail is going to just one identity.
In other words ALL mail is going into one Identity's mailbox, thus mixing up the mail and not separating it.

I checked Identities again, and it appears to be set correctly, so I don't know why all mail is defaulting to the one Identity's mailbox.

I am not familiar with Outlook or Outlook Express as I don't use those programs much, but know enough to set them up.

Can't figure this one out, please help if you have any ideas, thanks.

I have been using Outlook Express 6 which seems to be working fine. However, I wanted to switch to Outlook. When I try to install Outlook, I get a message that "Outlook Express 5 or higher needs to be installed." It is installed and working.
When I boot up the computer, I get a message that "Outlook Express has been removed and asks if I want to remove related files." I don't want to lose all of my stuff in Outlook Express, so I say "No" and the system continues with boot-up.
I am running Windows XP Pro with 2.53 GHz system and 1.00 GHz RAM. I have scanned for Adware, and Spyware and run a good antivirus program (Avast) which is kept up to date. I am also using Office XP.
Can someone please assist with this or will I have to do a complete "format" and start over.
Thanks for any assistance.

I am an old guy. I tend to like Outlook Express. Some years ago I finally got it customized in terms of text size and layout the way I like. I am used to it. But, it seems to have some kind of fatal flaw - that every year or so MS OUtlook Express's InBox gets corrupted and makes either or both sending or receiving email no longer possible. It is as if after working properly for a year or two the InBox file gets to a certain size and goes haywire. Is there any remedy for this? Is there a more stable version of Outlook Express or another mail program that is very similar but more stable than OE that I can import my settings into?

can anyone give me a step by step description, how i can export my Emails and the Address book from Outlook Express 6 to another Computer which runs also Outlook Express 6?
I tried already to export the Address book but it only allows me to export it as a *.csv-File and after i put the data on my usb stick and try to import it on my new computer by File - Import - Addressbook, the program keeps asking me for a *.wab-File? (btw: i can only use the: "Text File (Comma Separated Values))" Option, when exporting the address book.

Export and Import from email messages doesn't work either.

Has anyone a really step-by-step description how to do this??

Thank you very much in advance for your help

A:Solved: Import & Export from Outlook Express 6 to Outlook Express 6

Hi wizzle2003

When you are ready to Import the .csv file on the destination computer,
In Outlook Express,
File > Import > Other Address Book
You should then be given the option to choose a Text File (Comma Separated Values)
Then Browse to the .csv file to complete the Import.
Enable Show Hidden Files and folders:

Open My Computer,
Tools > Folder Options > View tab,
under Hidden Files and Folders, verify Show Hidden Files and Folders is selected.
Remove the check mark for Hide Extensions for known file types.
To locate the directory where Outlook Express keeps it's message store:
Tools > Options > Maintenance tab > Store Folder
Note the location, then Cancel out of the window.

Navigate to that directory, copy all the .dbx files to a folder on the Desktop.
Copy those files to a folder on the Desktop of the destination computer.
If you are using a Flash drive to transfer the files, it may take a couple of transfers to complete.

Once all the .dbx files are on the Destination computer,
Open Outlook Express,
Tools > Import > Messages > Microsoft Outlook Express 6 > Next
Select: Import mail from an OE 6 store directory
Click: OK
Browse to the folder containing the .dbx files on the Desktop.
When you reach the Finish button,
You should see a "Congratulations Your data was successfully imported"

If there is more than one Identity in Outlook Express, switch to the other Identities in Outlook Express and repeat the steps above.

My email, which used to be fine, is messed up, probably due to me. I have windows 98, I use Microsoft Internet Exp. and Roadrunner DSL cable modem.
When I want to create an email, I can no longer change the color of the type or the font size. If I change the font size, as soon as I press (enter) it reverts back to (10) also cannot keep font style changed. When I click on create new mail, the little blinking line, (cursor?) is in the middle of the page and I can't move it to the left margin.
Appreciate any help in simple terminology, cuz I'm not too pc savvy.

A:Outlook Express 6 Problems

Open Outlook Express, Go to Tools then Click on Options.
Click on compose and click font settings, select the one you want and apply and ok, if it one of the ones available, when you go to send an email, it will be the correct size.
It will have to be 8, 10, 12, 14, 18, 24, or 36 size, if you pick a font and size that is not available when you click to send an email and can choose, it will not stay.

A:Outlook Express problems.

Scanning emails is not necessary and that is most likely the cause.

This is what McAfee support had to say about Email Scan:

"You don't have to worry about the e-mail scan as this is a
corporate feature -requiring Outlook 2000 and a mail server such as
Exchange server. Unless you meet the criteria you should make sure
that it is disabled. As long as you have the Download scan and
Internet filter enabled you'll be just fine as these two options effectively
checks anything downloaded -including e-mails. I hope this answers your
question. Remember e-mail scan is for corporate users only."

Antivirus software invades the Outlook Express program to try and intercept
(incoming and, in some cases, outgoing) messages that might contain virus.

The problem with this approach is that the antivirus software can trigger
the destruction of an entire message folder or the entire message store,
when it attempts to remove a message containing a potential virus.

To prevent the possibility of such destruction occuring, turn off email
scanning in your antivirus software. You will still be protected against
infection. If you attempt to open a message attachment containing a
potential virus, then your antivirus software will recognize that your are
attempting to infect your system, and will block you from doing so. The
best practice on the user's part is to save an attachment to disk and then

I changed a friend's XP system to use OE instead of Mozilla's EMail handler, so that I could more easily help her (she's 88 years old and without any experience). When I visited her a week ago, her Inbox had several messages, which (together) we answered, but left in the Inbox, so that she could just click on them to reply. I noticed today that there was only one message remaining in the Inbox, and nothing in the Deleted Items folder. This lady would not know how to delete messages, and no one else has access to the system. If anyone has any idea how this could happen, please share it with me.

Secondly, I noticed that that OE continued to report that 'There is one unread message in your Inbox' even after we had read it several times, for some length of time. (I didn't think to check how long a message would remain 'unread' during reading. I'll do that next time. But no one changed that setting since I was there a week ago, and the problem didn't exist then.)

Finally, I'm unable, on her system, to access (old) EMails that I copied onto her file system, containing info of interest to her, like URLs to interesting websites, etc. After I set her system to use OE instead of Mozilla's EMail handler, and deleted the latter (via Control Panel), OE is now her EMail handler, and is activated when I click on an EMail file in her file system. But, unlike the OE on my XP system at home, the EMail is never displayed. OE just sh... Read more

Hi, I'll try to explain this the best that I can...

Basically, I set up a new identity in Outlook Express for a new email address of mine. I have no problem with the default identity. But for this new one, I can log in, recieve messages, but not send them.

Everytime I try, I get this error message:

The message could not be sent because one of the recipients was rejected by the server. The rejected e-mail address was email address removed. Subject 'Re: Hello', Account: 'mail.additionagencies.co.uk', Server: 'smtp.additionagencies.co.uk', Protocol: SMTP, Server Response: '554 Recipient Rejected: Relay access denied', Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 554, Error Number: 0x800CCC79

I know it's not the recieving email that's the problem, because it won't let me send to ANY address with this identity. Maybe I didn't set it up right?

Can anyone help please?

Hi. I wrote a few days about about a problem I have with the margins on OE 6.0. When I print an email message someone has sent me, the left margin is cut off by about 3 spaces. I can't find anywhere to adjust the left margin. I have no idea why it suddenly did this. Any thoughts.

Another brand new problem is that when I click on a link inside an email message, it takes me to IE 6.0 but IE does not actually load. It just sits there doing nothing. This is very inconvenient of course because I have to copy any embedded URL and then paste in on an open IE 6.0.

I would sure appreciate any thoughts you might have.

I have just purchased a new PC loaded with XP. I am having a minor but annoying problem with Outlook Express v.6. I have three separate identities and I am on cable access (cox.net). About 50% of the time, when I try to shift from one identity to another, the current email page disappears like it is going to shift to the new identity but that identity does not come back on the screen. When I double click the Outlook Express icon it grinds away for about 10 second and then stops. I have to reboot each time this happens in order to get to the other identity.

Of course, this is slow and annoying. I have found that if I wait about 10-15 seconds it has never done this. If I try to immediately double click the new identity or do not wait the 10 seconds it will almost always disappear. I thought originally that it might be having trouble finding the identity but they appear to be set up correctly. Any ideas?

On a separate issue, is there any reason one particular recipient of my email would not receive the email if I send it as a blind copy? She can receive if it is sent in the open but not blind. It happens with just one recipient. Many thanks for any help.

Hi all, I am hoping that the answer to krazeecrw's problem can help me also.

I am having a similar problem in Windows XP SP2. In my case, in IE 6.0 whenever I choose "source" under the "View" menu, nothing happens. It doesn't matter which program I choose under the "tools, internet options, programs, HTML Editor" menu, i.e. notepad, word, or my html editing package, nothing happens when I select "view, source".

I don't get any error messages or any other indication that something is wrong. The only indication is that a new window with the source displayed doesn't open. I have turned off my pop-up blocker and don't have any other programs running in IE, so I don't think it's a 3rd party add-on issue.

Not sure if my issue and krazeecrw's Outlook problem are related, but there does seem to be enough similarities that I think they could be.

I'm no guru, but I would venture to say it's an ISP server problem. Give them a call and tell them what's going on. They're going to first assume it's a problem with your computer and make you do a lot of what you've already checked, but be patient. Double check all your settings beforehand.

These were carried out as suggested by others with similar problems in the 'search'

Now I've an added problem where the 'Send and Recieve' is greyed out and cannot be used in OE.

I did do a spyware check with XoftSpy SE and found the usual cookies and also a strange one I've not had before and although it was not not marked for removal as the others (cookies). But then reading about 'Potentially Unwanted Policy Changes' where this could allow changes to be made with or without my consent. I marked it to be Quarrantined along with the cookies.

Should have I left this alone or am I in trouble. I've done a virus check taking some 2hrs with nothing reported.

Help please

When I try to open some of my e-mails I get a window that says--This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Is there anyway I can open? or how do I fix this?

A:Outlook Express Problems

First you will need to determine what application is required to open the file, or files---just Goggle the file extension. For example, .xls would require Excel or an equivalent application. If you have the required application, then the next step is to associate the file TYPE with it.The mini-guide instructions below are targeted to picture files, but the process is identical for any unassociated file type:http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/40808/how-to-change-which-application-opens-your-pictures/I hope this solves your problem, but if not, or you have any questions, please reply.Regards,John

I am using Windows XP and I have upgraded to MS Office 2003 .

Before the recent upgrade and after, I continue to have problems with Outlook Express 6.

Here is the error message:

There was a problem logging onto your mail server. Your Password was rejected. Account: 'pophm.sympatico.ca', Server: 'pophm.sympatico.ca', Protocol: POP3, Server Response: '-ERR command failed', Port: 995, Secure(SSL): Yes, Server Error: 0x800CCC90, Error Number: 0x800CCC92

I am using Bell Sympatico as my server and I can access my email through the web site, however, I would prefer to use Outlook Express 6. Sympatico support does not extend beyond their interface with the web. They will check on the back end to see if all is well, but when it comes to working with Outlook Express 6 other than assisting on setting up the account, they will go no further.

Any assistance you may proved would be helpful.

I am running WIN XP with SP2 installed, Outlook Express 6.0, AVG 7.0 free
virus program. When I open my Inbox in outlook express it shows that some
e-mails have attachments. When I open that e-mail there is no attachment
there to open. I had a friend send me an e-mail with out an attachment but it came in the inbox showing there was an attachment there. The ones with attachments open just fine. Why do some of the other's show attachments when there is none? Got me going in circles. Also I can't send an e-mail to myself. I don't have myself blocked or any mail rule to stop me from sending to myself.Hope this enough info for you to help me out.

Thank you, John T

Hey bhesson,
This is something that I brought up on this site before. The initial problem was that I could not send/Email a web page or open a new mail message from Internet Explorer. I WAS going to have the store that I bought the system from uninstall and then reinstall Outlook (they are the ones that originally loaded my software) as I was told to do that from a Microsoft rep. Well they will not do it unless I pay them to trouble shoot it. I went to the add/remove section and Outlook is not on the list in that field. It is however in the next tab over in "Windows set up" Should I just uncheck the box>apply>then recheck the box to reinstall it (novice)??? Also if there is anything else that I can try besides this I am open to suggestions. As I said before the problem is when I click send>page by E mail it does not open a new message. Also if I'm in IE and click on mail>new message, send a link, or send a page, again nothing happens. There has got to be some reasonable explanation for this problem. I should note however that when I click on "read mail" it does open up Outlook. Help if you can, very frustrating situation !!

I have a brand new pc and have two problems with my Outlook Express that I have never seen before.
1. Each day when I turn on the pc, log onto the web and then open outlook - I have no new messages - if I go into the account properties - there is an isp number in the incoming mail and I have to change it to the right address for the server to get my mail.
2. I also seem to have a duplication problem. This is erratic, and may not happen for a couple of days, but after going through the above process, I normally just get my messages, but, using tonight as an example, I received all the messages I had already received over the past 4 days, plus others that had never come in at all on those dates, plus all the new ones from today! I have been to the online access site to veiw my mail to see if there was an email that was blocking(I do this each day to make sure), but it is all clear there. I am running McAfee Spamkiller and Antivirus, and there is no problems there either!!
Please help!!!
Thanks in advance!!

I've looked everywhere for solutions for this problem but to no avail, so any help would be really appreciated!

I use outlook express for email and I can receive emails fine and with no problems but now when i try to send an email I get an error message (530) when sending them saying that "the server rejected the sender's email address".

I've tried changing the settings under accounts, servers, authentication required (this fixed a similar problem before) but nothing is working now.
Please can anyone help?
Thanks in advance!
