Vista doesn't detect my hard drive

Q: Vista doesn't detect my hard drive

I'm using a Gigabyte GA-EP35-DS3R motherboard, and my hard drive is a seagate barracuda 500gb.

The system is brand new, built myself. No previous operating system on it.
I tried installing windows vista. I get past everything, until it asks me to select a drive to install to, and the list is empty. I tried every driver on the mobo's cd, and every driver on their website, none of them worked. I've tried different SATA modes, and ports on the mobo, and it doesn't work (I would dear say I've tried everything, except another OS because I don't have access to one).

However, when I select browse to search for drivers, when installing vista, I can select the local drive and search it for drivers. Does this mean it's there and it's something else, or is it just an option and what not? (there's a floppy there too, but I have none installed on the computer).

My bios sees the HD just fine. I'm out of ideas, and friggin fed up. I tried contacting Gigabyte but that was pointless.

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

I am running a Intel D845BG mobo and have a 6.5gb hd connected to IDE0. I launch my machine and I can see the harddrive in bios as well as my other devices. When I start Windows 2000 setup, it says that it can't find boot partition to check signature. It gets to the initial setup and gives me 3 choices. to repair, setup, or exit. I choose install fresh copy. Then I get the error message, "Setup cannot find any hard disks installed on your computer" Press F3 to restart.

I have tried all jumper combinations on the hard drive, I know the hard drive is good but can't get Windows 2K setup to recognize it. Please Help.. I have tried everything.

Thank you in advance.

Hello,

So i want to switch the HDD's of my 2 computers, i unplugged both drives, then i put one of the drives into the other computer attaching it exactly as it was (the master slave thingy) but the comp said it didn't detect and master or slave. So i took it out again and changed the master slave thingy so that it was the same as the HDD that i took out of the computer i was trying to get this HDD to work in.

Same thing happened, comp said it didn't detect any HDD at all.

Why can't it detect it?

Both drives are unformatted and have windows and stuff on them, i thought it'd be a simple switch a roo.

Does this mean that the HDD is not compatible in this other computer?

Or do i need to do something to make the computer detect the HDD?

Thanks.

A:Solved: Computer doesn't detect hard drive

I assume they are not being seen on the bios - correct

check the details on the HDD and make sure you have set to Master - what else is on the cable .....

are these identical machines ? because with windows you have installed all the motherboard drivers and even if you swap them around and get the bios to recognise them - windows may not work correctly

i backed up all my files in case i need to format and install windows 7 again, but right now i can't do that because the installation disc doesn't detect my hard drive.

A:Downgrading to XP from vista- says cannot detect hard drive

XP is 10-years-old now. SATA drives did not even exist when it came out. So it can't detect them. You may have problems finding drivers for your other hardware, too, so it would be a good idea to try to find them now. Vista can be made to look and act as much like XP as you like and has a newer kernel. It is a better operating system.

Two days ago I replaced my old mother board (G31 M7 TE) with its latest version (G41 M7). These mother boards are from Biostar. Everything went fine until installing Vista. When windows was looking for a place to install the operating system it was unable to find a drive (My hard drive is a Hitachi Deskstar P7K500 previously had Vista insalled on it from my old mother board). I made sure that the SATA and power cables were connected and the drive drive was getting warm so I am sure that it is recieving power. When I go to load a driver a pop-up comes up that says the system needs the installation media to access the hard drive (having originally purchased the old mother boad and hard drive as a set from CyberPower, I did not recieve any sort of installation software for the hard drive). I have searched around on Hitachi's website and i was unable to find any downloadable installation software. I also looked around for similar threads, but didnt find any where the drive wasnt being detected during the installation of the operating system.

I am at loss of what to do here. I have tried using a different SATA cable, and restarting the operating system installation process. I know there is nothing wrong with my hard drive since i connected it to another PC and moved a few files off of it. Is there anywhere you know of that will provide the installation software? I have a Dell Dimension XPS 720. My PC has two sata hard drives and one IDE hard drive. When I boot the PC tells me that it doesn't detect any hard drive in sata 3. Then it asks me to press F1 to continue. But, when I get into my OS which is Vista Ultimate, I check 'My Computers' and my second hard drive appears. And sata hard drive works fine.

I've gone into BIOS. Each SATA port also lists the model number of the sata hard drive, but the sata drive I'm having problems with isn't listed and yes the hard drive sata port is set to 'ON'.

I should also note that I never used to have problems with this hard drive in the past. It used to show up on the BIOS drive list.

I need help fixing this problem.

If the drive is "seen" by the OS, it has to be detected by the bios. Swap the SATA drives and see if the bios now "sees" the former phantom drive

Hi All,

I am new to this community and this is the first time i am posting.

My computer doesn't show volume control in system tray and Audio is completely gone. When I tried to get that from accessories it gives me a message that there are no active mixer devices available and tells me to go to control panel and add hardware.

Let me tell you what I have done so far. I ran msconfig and found "Windows Audio" and it was okay since there was check mark besides it. Alternately I ran %SystemRoot%\system32\services.msc which takes me to the same place and everything seems okay.

Then in control panel - sounds and audio devices - volume tab completely grayed out, on audio and voice tab it says the default device is modem#0 line play back ( I don't know why..!) and same thing for sound recording.

I have been working on this for 2 days but can't figure out. Any kind of help will be greatly appreciated.

And also, none of my USB seems working and doesn't detect any connections like my external hard drive.

Hoping to hear some solution...!!

Thanks..!!

Sometimes, it takes a reformat and reinstall to get things working. Others here will have solutions that will sometimes work temporarily. But the complete reformat and reinstall is the most reliable, we have found.
Do you use a USB printer - scan - fax - copier? We find that there is some sort of relationship with this problem you describe, and certain Epson, HP, and Lexmark multifunction printers and USB failures. In those cases, a total uninstall and removal from the registry, then reinstall from downloads seems to be a good fix. In others, the multi-function printer never works right again.

Are they SATA or IDE? They tell me Vista doesn't "like" IDE, there is a way to make them work.
But someone else will have to help you with that, as I have no experience with it!

Hi,
I have a Lenovo t61 laptop with Windows Vista. I have a western digital mybook essential edition 250GB which I previously used with my old laptop which ran XP. When I safely remove the hard drive, the computer gives me the message that the hard drive has been succesfully disconnected, however the ring light on the external hard drive remains on. Ideally, this light should go off once I have disconnected the hard drive.
I have have tried using the Western Digital Spindown program, but the light still remains on. My only option is to manually turn the hard drive off, which the manufacturer says not to do.
What can I do so that the external hard drive disconnects properly?
Thanks

A:Vista doesn't properly disconnect external hard drive

Does your hard drive have a separate power source/cord? I don't know about the 250G drives, but the 500G MyBookI have is powered by a cord (rather than the USB port). And even if I disconnect the drive from the PC, the light on mine stays on until the power itself is cut off.

I'm running windows vista and I have a maxtor touch mini external hardrive. I've never had any problems with it. But now when I open My Computer the harddrive is nowhere to be seen. I'm all up to date w/ windows updates and when I go into Device Manage it says the device is working properly and is up-to-date w/ it's drivers. So what's the deal? I know my computer is registering the device is there because it makes the 'device inserted' noise and in the safely remove hardware tab the device appears as 'USB Mass Storage Device'. In disk management it shows up as Disk 1 (pretty sure it's referring to that anyway) It says it is unknown and uninitialized, when I try to initialize it an error message pops up that states device is not ready- under properties it says it's working properly and up to date w/ drivers. How can get access to my external harddrive? Please help!!!!!

Hi everyone,

I have a PC running Vista Ultimate x64 and I just installed a 1Tb external hard disk (an eSATA/USB 2.0 combo) Through USB.

The problem is that the OS doesn't assign any drive letter to the external disk.

I tried to reinstall but it doesn't work at all.

In Disk management, choosing to "initialize" the disk, I selected the MBR partitioning style...but it returns an "invalid function" error message.

How can I fix this problem?

The system reads that there is a disk but it doesnt' recognize it and it doesnt assign any drive letter.

A:Vista Ultimate x64 - External hard disk doesn't receive drive letter

Did you format it ? ?

Many drives ship unformatted...

TIP: If you want it to keep the same drive letter even when USB devices are added ( handy for all sorts of reasons ) once it's formatted select a drive letter that's not currently in use and assign it....next give it a Volume name.

This also works with thumb drives as well...

First, it could be lint or trash has gotten into and covered laser. Second, it could be the drive motor not coming up to speed or not at all! My sugestion would be try a couple of short burst of canned air to make sure you dislodge any dust. Then try a Cd, when drawer closes with a Cd on it, put a finger or two on the face plate you should feel the motor strat up or attempt to do so. If nothing happens then you need to replace Cd player!

2. Tried burning a DVD using ConvertXtoDVD but it burns very slowly (even though it was set at x16) and it freezes the computer when burning.

Hence, I tried to change it to AHCI mode as information on the internet says changing it to AHCI would solve the problem,

1. Update drive to latest firmware.
2. Changed to AHCI (in BIOS) and selected my SSD to boot with success!
3. Tried to insert DVD into drive but not detected!

Hi everyone, this is my first time here. I haven't used my D drive for a couple of months, so who knows how long this has been a problem. I had the klez virus back in July but then got rid of it. I don't think that caused the problem because after I got rid of the virus I reinstalled Norton and it worked just fine then. A couple people have mentioned that it coule be a lost driver but I don't want to waste time downloading programs that I don't need. Any thoughts?

Thanks.

I was told by HP to install SATA controllers but I can't find anything like that for my Mobo on the internet. The MSI Live Update program doesn't even find anything for me. So, is there anyone who can help me with my dilemma?

A:MSI Mobo doesn't detect HP SATA optical drive

If it helps, HP has told me to connect my SATA drive to another computer, but I can't because there are all too old and don't use SATA.

Hello...

I am ready to lose my mind... I would greatly appreciate the help.
This crappy pop up keeps coming up on the computer and I removed it once with Malwarebyte.
At the time, it worked so I thought everything was good.
Yet, it appeared again (Last night) and when I went into safe mode this time, it was just black with safe mode sign on the four corners. So using a laptop, I googled and was able to use the task manager and start the malwarebyte program after several attempts.
But this time, malwarebyte did not pick up anything. It keeps saying there's no malicious item detected >.<
So after googling (once again), I read somewhere to put this message into a notepad:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\.exe]
[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\secfile]
[-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\secfile]
[-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.exe\shell\open\command]

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\exefile\shell\open\command]
@="\"%1\" %*"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.exe]
@="exefile"
"Content Type"="application/x-msdownload"

save it as fix.reg on desktop, double click it, YES to confirm and reboot.
Then I was supposed to run a malwarebyte again "QUICK SCAN" and it would pick up infected items.
But... it didn't pick up anything.... T.T
I'm officially ready to burst into tears about now..
Can someone please help me so that it&#... Read more

A:Vista AntiVirus 2010 - Malwarebyte doesn't detect any infected items

Bubbles, the problem may be your malwarebytes is not the latest version. Once you open it you have to update it to the latest version before running. If you don't, then it will miss new versions of the virus. It can be hard to get it to update, see my thread from today at 4:16PM for more information.

Hi there,We just received  a shipment of Elitebook 840 G3s.  I wanted to clone my current Folio over to the new laptop but was surprised that when I booted into clonezilla from a 4GB USB Kingston Data traveller that it didn't see the source 256 GB USB SSD Drive.  When I went into the BIOS, it doesn't see the USB Drive, but it does see the thumbdrive and internal SSD. I have tried USB 2 & 3 devices with different drives attached.  The drive is detected when booted into windows and I can browse it. Is anyone aware of an issue with the current 1.05 BIOS and eithe drive size etc... recognized by the BIOS for USB?

I am using Windows Xp #3.
I have an external hard drive Maxtor Seagate ext. hard drive (H) NTSB Free Agent Xtreme 500GB; p/n: 9ze283-500. I used it for the last year for all my backups. Suddenly a few days ago, it disappeared and I cannot detect it. I tried the drive on another computer and it was fine. So, it must be something within my windows registry? that is not working. I have tried RegCure but that did not help.
What can I do?

Hi everyone, I have an issue I can't seem to fix. Whenever my computer starts up, it says something like this:

No bootable drive found--strike F1 to retry booting, F2 for setup utility. Press F5 to run onboard diagnostics.

If I press F1, it still doesn't work. I tested it and everything went well except the DST SHort test which said that there is no Hard Drive. I just want to know if I can fix it by myself or if I have to waste money at the computer repair store.

P.S. Writing this from my sis' laptop

A:Can't Detect Hard Drive

Take a look in the bios and make sure that you have in the BOOT area the following:

Hard Drives or Hard Drive Priority - Make sure whatever it says in there, it is set to the drive you want to boot from.

Second, we need specs like the motherboard and type (Sata or IDE) drive and brand name with model if possible.
