I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: How to turn windows firewall off? I can't click the Turn Windows Firew

This may have been disabled on your computer, particularly if you are in a Domain (e.g.: at work, in a library, etc).

However assuming that you have Administrator rights to your computer you should be able to turn it on and off by going to Start > Control Panel > Windows Firewall > Turn Windows Firewall on or off.

If you cannot turn the Firewall off through the above approach try the following Start > Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services

Looks for the 'Windows Firewall' Service, double click it, then click on 'Stop'.

From within the Service properties you can also stop the Firewall from starting with Windows, etc.

Wife updated Norton twice and had two Norton Firewalls and Windows Firewalls running together. Paid twice for the 2 updates. Removed Norton Completely and then re-installed Norton 360 Security Version 5, but am still unable to turn off Windows Firewall under Windows XP Pro and also cannot turn on Automatic updates, getting message "we're Sorry, the Security Center could NOT change your Automatic Windows Update setting. To try changing these settings, go to SYSTEM in Control Panel. On the Automatic Updates Tab, select AUTOMATIC (recommended) and then click OK. None of this works, then tried using an app to reset Security Settings and that didn't work either. Any suggestions on what I try next. I would like to reinstall Norton 360 Internet Security Version 5, I know there are those out there that hate Norton and the overhead that comes with it, but over the years I've gotten used to it and I like it very much. A:How To Turn On Firewall In Windows Xp

Go to your Control Panel; find "Windows Firewall."
Doubleclick on the icon to get the "General" tab on the dropdown menu that will show.

Please understand that the XP Firewall will only inspect incoming packets; therefore you may wish to use one of the many free firewalls available to assure you have complete protection and computer security.

Hi all,

I have problems connecting to internet. Windows firewall cannot be turned on. When I tried to turn on firewall, I prompted to use recommended settings but it says " Windows Firewall can't change of your settings. Error code 0x8007042c".

I went to services.msc

Application Layer Gateway Service
Startup type: Manual
Service status: Started

Based on the list of dependencies found under Windows Firewall Properties:

Base Filtering Engine Properties
Startup type: Automatic
Service status: Stopped
I encountered an error while trying to start this.
"Windows could not start the Base Filtering Engine Service on Local Computer. Error 5: Access is denied."

Remote Procedure Call
DCOM Server Process Launcher
RPC Endpoint Mapper
These 3 are already started.

Windows Firewall Authorization Driver cannot be found under the list in services.msc

Windows Firewall Properties
"Windows could not start the Windows Firewall service on Local Computer.
Error 1068: The dependency service or group failed to start."

I tried to look for the file "c:\windows\system32\drivers\mdsdrv.sys"
only to know that it is missing.

Anyone with similar experience or knows how to solve this kindly help
Thank you

Feel free to request any information that you need.
Btw, I am currently using Windows 7.

Hello all,

I have a problem with the firewall on my vista desktop. It is currently turned off as try as I may I just can't turn it back on. I get the warning come on everytime the comp is turned on, I click on the bubble to turn it on but it says windows can't start this. I then tried doing it manually but this doesn't work either. I then tried the run/cmd way but this didn't work and then also tried the hkey start/run way which says it is running but when I go back to control panel, there is the red dot with firewall turned off next to it.....!!

But the reply to the post didn't fix my problem.....

Welcome to TSF,

Click on Start and type services.msc press enter. Scroll down to Windows Firewall and make sure that Service is Started.

The error message I receive is: Windows Firewall Settings cannot be displayed because the associated service is not running. Do you want to start the Windows Firewall Service. I click YES. Next error message is this: Windows cannot start the Windows Firewall service.

Hi. Could you check the dependencies for the Windows Firewall service and make sure they all are running? Here's how: Start, Run, type services.msc then press Enter. Scroll down to Windows Firewall and double-click it to open its properties. You'll also see its state whether it's running, stopped or caught in a "starting" loop. The dependencies tab will list the components it needs to run. Am already suspecting a common culprit the BITS service (Background Intelligence Transfer Service),but i could be wrong. Make note of those dependencies, then look them up in the same Services.msc window and conform that they are all running. Event Viewer should also have an error stating why the Firewall service cannot be started. Kindly post back with any observations you make in services and event error. It'll hasten narrowing down to the root of this problem.

64 bit version. I'm trying to work through an iTunes problem - it tells me that the iTunes application could not be opened - and in an effort to diagnose the problem I wanted to turn off the firewall on my antivirus.

I turned off AVG, but when I go to Control Panel and click on Windows Firewall it reads:

Home or work (private) networks Not Connected
Windows Firewall state On

Public networks Connected
Windows Firewall state On

There is an option on the left 'Turn Windows Firewall on or off' that does turn blue and becomes underscored when I hover the mouse over it. But left or right clicking produce no result.

She is running xp home on a compaq laptop with sp2.
The windows firewall option to turn on is greyed out. In the windows firewall section in the control panel, it does ask if i wish to turn on the firewall but nothing happens. She is the sole user of this pc and has administrative rights.

A:Windows Firewall won't turn on

Take a look at this one it may help.

When you open Services.msc applet, the Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) service may not be available in the listing
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/sharedaccess.htm

ALso you might want to try this:

There are situations where-in you need to reset your Windows Firewall settings, after removing a Trojan etc. Resetting the Windows Firewall sets the configuration to factory defaults by removing all the programs / port / exceptions settings.
To reset the Windows Firewall to the factory default state, try this:
Type firewall.cpl in Start, Run dialog.
Click the Advanced tab.
Click the Restore Defaults button.
Click Yes to continue when you see this dialog
Restoring the default settings will delete all settings of Windows Firewall that you have made since Windows was installed. This may cause some programs to stop working.

Do you want to continue?
The Windows Firewall is now turned ON, and set to factory default state.
Alternately, you can use the NETSH command-line to accomplish this:
Open a Command Prompt window and type NETSH FIREWALL RESET
This command resets firewall configuration to default. This provides the same functionality as the Restore Defaults button in the Windows Firewall interface.

Hi all!
Since last couple of days I am facing trouble in enabling Windows Firewall on my machine which uses Windows 7 Ultimate x64 as the Operating System. It all started with an error that I received while using Internet Download Manager v6.11 regarding Base Filtering Engine. I googled the error and found a fix for the said problem and fixed it in no time. Just out of curiosity I read the post further and found that there could be some other services that might not be working properly, so I checked for the same and was shocked to realize that the windows firewall was not working. Its start up type was ?automatic? however the status showed ?stopped?. When I tried to start the service I got following error:
Windows could not start the Windows Firewall on Local Computer. For more information, review the System Event Log. If this is a non-Microsoft service, contact the service vendor, and refer to service- specific error code 5.
Now I read a couple of posts and they said various things about being attacked by some malware or Trojan etc. I use Microsoft Security Essential as anti-virus and scanned the entire computer. It found more than a dozen of Trojans and some hack related viruses which it very smartly handled. I also used Malwarebyte and found at least 100 of infections. I don?t know if I did good or not, I removed them all. Then gain I tried to start the Windows Firewall service after I restarted my system, yet again it gave me the same error that it could not start. Wh... Read more

Hello Vinny and welcome to Seven Forums.

Couple of things you can try. If you have a restore point that goes back to before the initial problems, try restoring your computer to that date/time.

System Restore

You could also see if your machine has any damaged or corrupt system files by running a system file checker scan from an elevated command prompt (option two.) If problems are found run the scan 3 times rebooting in between each scan.

SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker

MSE is good, but no anti-malware product is 100% effective 100% of the time. If there was such a product we'd all be using it. Here are a few more free scanning tools recommended on this Forum.

Malwarebytes

Hitman Pro

SuperAntispyware

Comodo Cleaning Essentials

Windows Defender Offline

Hi,

After finally getting rid of the 'Metropolitan Police virus', and restoring registry files accordingly, my firewall is failing to turn on. It just loads for a minute then times out. The same happens to Windows Defender.
It seems to have corrupted important components on my system.

I have run several scans which claim to have found the troubled files and deleted them, however I am still having problems.
The 'Google misdirect' bug is also lingering too, and my internet speed has become affected.

I've tried nearly every seperate solution aside from getting individual advice based on scan logs. If someone can just advise which scanner to use, I'll then attach the log.

Error code: 0x6D9

Help is much appreciated. This is driving me crazy and hindering my online work.

Thanks in advance!

I am working on a friends computer that was infected with Fake Antivirus, and probably a few others before I got involved. I was able to succussfully remove the Fake AV using MBAM and additional scans with MBAM indicate no infections. However, windows security center says the firewall is disabled and when I try to enable there is a notice that "Some settings are controlled by Group Policy" and the On selection is greyed out. The OS is Windows XP Home edition SP3. I am aware that GP is not available on XP home, and to the best of my knowledge, this machine has never been on a domain although the AV software they have loaded is Norton Corporate Edition. I am currently running using msconfig to disable all Startup items only Microsoft services enabled. Starting in normal mode the computer still runs slowly. Any thoughts?

I realised as of now I haven't had a firewall or windows firewall running on my computer for a while. I thought AVG free came with one. So I downloaded Comodo Firewall immediately.

I change my antivirus to avast recently. I use Superantispyware and malwarebytes antimalware.

Many solutions told me to check Base Filtering service and windows firewall were running. They were not. I only got Base Filtering Service to start.

I scanned my computer recently with Avast and found a virus that was on my computer , it was Win64/Sirefef.F , could this be the problem to my firewall not running at all?

I have followed the standard procedure for turning off the windows firewall. But I can not turn off the security wall. I went to control panel-> security center. Then clicked on windows firewall. Chose off option and then OK. But the windows firewall is still on in the security center panel.

I am having problems loading both Internet Explorer and Firefox; the altter one does load after a couple of attempts. IE even when it loads does not work properly. For example, in hotmail, some time I can not open inbox or if I could, could not open a particular mail. I am using Norton firewall/antivirus. I thought Windows firewall may be responsible for my problem.

I would appreciate any help

I doubt if that's the cause of all your problems, but=
Enable or disable XP Internet Connection Firewall = http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/networking/learnmore/icf.mspx

To turn XP firewall on/off = start/control panel/double-click on network connections/right click on the icon for the connection you are using/properties/advanced/ check or uncheck box next to "internet connection firewall"

After you turn it off, you might want to =

Disable SP2 security alert = start/settings/control panel/security center/in the resources click - "change the way security center alerts me"/uncheck white small boxes and click ok

I have a HP 2010i running Windows 7. I have been having a problem opening my mail in AOL. After I sign in and click on my mail it brings me to the mail screen but the page never loads all the way and freezes. I can eventually open my mail after going back and forth a few times. I ran a virus scan using Microsoft Security Essentials. It detected the Rogue WIN32/FakeVimes virus and deleted it. However, I still can not open my AOL mail correctly. I do not have the AOL software as a program on my computer, I just go to AOL.com. I can get to my mail correctly on a home laptop and other computers just fine. Also, I can not get my Windows Firewall to turn on. After doing the diagnostic tests provided by Windows, it states "Windows Security Center can't be started". Your help would be greatly appreciated.

The On/Off options on the Windows Firewall are grayed out. I've tried using the group policy editor to turn it off. It's not working. When is Microsoft going to stop including this stupid thing in its OS? Nothing works right if it's turned on. I need to turn it off so I can access my ADMIN$ share from the domain controller. Anyone have a fix?

When I chose to "Turn Windows Firewall on or off" I get a button "Use recommended settings". By clicking it I get the following error message "Windows Firewall can't change some of your settings. Error code 0x80070424"

When I go to Advanced settings I get the message "There was an error opening the Windows Firewall with Advanced Security snap-in. The Windows Firewall with Advanced Security snap-in failed to load. Restart the Windows Firewall service on the computer that you are managing. Error code: 0x6D9"

For how long has this been happening to my Firewall I cannot say as I discovered the issue 2 days ago. My computer didn't report anything not working.

-My firewall is not listed in the services list at all.

-I have the Advanced SystemCare program and I do system sweeps in every two weeks or so (I have read that Anti Viruses or programs such as Advanced SystemCare can cause the topic issue)

-My anti virus is ESET Smart Security 4.0 (I haven't been changing it)

-I have tried the method with BFE.reg files but it didn't work

-I've tried some debuging methods in "cmd" which didn't work as well

I don't know what to try anymore, so if anybody could help or something I'd really appreciate

Thank you in advance.

A:Can't turn on Windows Firewall

Hi B-lockdown080,

Your opening post is rather vague.

Could you provide some more information about the error message you are getting when you are trying to re-enable the firewall?
Could you also provide us with which operating system you are using?

I am assuming it is the default Windows Firewall you are trying to re-enable.

The more information you provide, the better.

Thank you

Hi, good forum this, JC you do work hard well done. Chriss71 for this you will need to go to the Reg key you mention right click permissions and as you have now added MpsSvc you need to highlight this then right click select "permissions" now put a check in "full control" & "read" press apply then OK out. This should fix it if not post back with more detail and we can help.

1.  Run a virus scan with a good antivirus program.  M$ had admitted that MSE is only a base line program, and a full one like AVAST should be use.
"Holly Stewart, senior program manager of the Microsoft Malware Protection Center, has told Dennis Technology Labs in an interview that Security Essentials is intended to provide "baseline" protection and recommended that users install an anti-virus on top of it for better security from advanced threats".

And, my msn messenger have been virus attacked and changed the nicknames and so on, I have got rid of the virus but my msn is still a bit messed up. Is there a real program that could "fix" it? I don't want to just google a fake program and get hacked again...

I recently uninstalled McAfee from my daughters Dell Laptop and replaced it with AvG antivirus. Now the Windows 7 Firewall won't turn on. It doesn't even give you the option in the security settings, the only option is "use recommended settings", which when selected does nothing. The mouse point gives the hourglass for a few seconds but then nothing happens.

I looked at the Windows Firewall service and it was "stopped". It was set to Automatic. I attempted to Start it from there and got an error message stating "Windows Firewall could not be started" or something close to that.

At this point I am at a loss of what to do next aside from reinstalling Windows 7 from scratch or using System restore. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I have a ZBOX, which came with Windows 7 installed. This was updated to Windows 10 a few weeks before the free offer ran out & was running fine.

Recently, I started getting the error message that Windows Firewall wasn't running & to tap to start it. When I do so, I get told that "Security and Maintenance Can't Turn on Windows Firewall." When I click the link to turn it on manually, I get a window that tells me the "firewall is not using the recommended settings." When I click the "Use Recommended Settings" button, nothing happens. If I click the "View recommended Settings" link, nothing happens. If I go to the Turn Windows Firewall on, or off link, it takes me back to the "firewall is not using the recommended settings" thing.

I have Googled & tried everything I can find online, including the following... Fix: Unable to Activate Firewall in Windows 10. I did discover that this problem has been a common one since Windows 8, but none of the fixes I've found work.
I've even run ReImage, which I suspect you'll disapprove of, since it's a registry tweaker & they are so often more trouble than they're worth, but that made no difference.

Today, to add to my joy, I discovered that serveral built in Windows apps, such as the calculator, no long run. I discovered how to re-install them through PowerShell, but guess what? Several couldn't be reinstalled because Windows Firewall wasn't running. ReImage did, however re... Read more

Hi, I have Windows 7 64-bit. After loading several AV programs/scanners due to trying to eliminate a virus, I wanted to confirm my Windows Firewall was turned on. When I went to Control Panel/Windows Firewall and clicked on "Turn Windows Firewall On or Off", all I saw in the "Customize settings for each type of network" window was the button "Use recommended settings" within a box called "Update your firewall settings". When I clicked on that button, nothing happened. Contrary to the picture shown in the Windows 7 Help pages, there was no option to actually turn the firewall on/off in this particular window. My intention is to simply verify the Windows Firewall is turned on after this virus happened.

My questions are:

1) Could an AV program/scanner program that I loaded have caused the Windows Firewall to be disabled (or replaced)? How do I know which AV programs have their own built-in firewall?
2) Assuming my Windows Firewall should be turned on, how can I verify it really is turned on?

ON EDIT: In the "Services" tab of Task Manager, I noticed the status of Windows Firewall (service "MpsSvc") is indicated as "Stopped". I assume this means the firewall is inactive. Not sure why or how to make it active.

A:Why Can't I Turn Windows Firewall On/Off?

After loading several AV programs/scanners What programs/scanners? By loading, do you mean installed? What did they report/reveal/remove/quarantine/heal...etc? After scanning, did you uninstall all but one AV? If so, how did you uninstall them? Need more info.due to trying to eliminate a virusI am not a malware removal expert, but I strongly suggest you post in the Am I infected? What do I do? forum. It seems to me you still are/may be infected and/or have lingering after effects of the infection. When I clicked on that button, nothing happened....there was no option to actually turn the firewall on/off in this particular windowThis is not good. See above.Could an AV program/scanner program that I loaded have caused the Windows Firewall to be disabled (or replaced)?Short answer: Yes. If you installed a "Security Suite" I believe they include a Firewall, which may disable the Windows Firewall by default (I've never used a "Suite" so forgive my ignorance on this) Could also be the malware. Could be.....too many variables. Again, Need more info.Assuming my Windows Firewall should be turned on, how can I verify it really is turned on... Not sure why or how to make it active.
