Thinkpad Yoga S1 keys t, y, backspace, caplock, and left shift not working

Q: Thinkpad Yoga S1 keys t, y, backspace, caplock, and left shift not working

On my Thinkpad Yoga S1, the keys t, y, backspace, enter, caplock, and left shift are suddenly not working. This seems to be a common problem on lenovo computers, but the lenovo forum administrator closed the only thread that attempted to address this without any solution. The lenovo admin said that too many diferent models were involved. I don't understand why these exact specific keys are affected on so many Lenovo models. Lenovo has no solution, and will not support a thread to work towards one. The Microsoft store already replaced my keyboard under warrenty over a year ago, but the YTP S1 is now out of warrenty. This does not seem to be a hardware problem given the relatively recent Keyboard replacement. Does anyone have any suggestions? I wont buy another Lenovo if this problem cant be solved. I've had tremndous problems with this computer and have found Lenovo to be unhelpful/unresponsive. This was an expensive computer when it was purchased.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I've had my TPY for a little over a year without any issues, but today I lost the ability to use the following keys: Backspace, Windows, Left-Shift, T, Y, Tab, Capslock, [, ]  in addition to some of the function keys. Using the onscreen keybaord or an external usb keyboard works just fine. I am unable to use the tab key at the BIOS screen, so it appears to be a hardware issue. This seems to be a common problem for these keys in particular for various Lenovo models and even some Dells. I have tried reinstalling the keyboard drivers as suggested in other posts, and I have tried reseating the keyboard connection according to this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PxHKvpI8Wvc I bought this unit from the MS store with only a 1 year warranty (which is now up), so I'm not sure what to do. I can try replacing the keyboard but it appears others have had only limited success with replacement. Has anyone else dealt with this problem?

Update for anyone else who runs into the same problem: I ordered a replacement keyboard off of eBay and used the online hardware replacement manuals to take apart my TPY and switch out the keyboard. Everything is working like normal again!

I did not spill any liquids over the laptop, not install any new hardware.  As far as I can tell, these are the only keys that do not work. I can type all these letters perfectly fine from an external USB keybaord (which I am using right now). Are there any ways to fix this? I've tried uninstalling the internal keyboard, but the computer asks me to restart after every attempt, and after restarting the keyboard is still working.  Any solutions?

You can change the volume in software, but neither the volume +- on the keyboard, nor the volume rocker on the side of the machine will change the volume. That is, UNLESS you open the task manager, and then click on the services tab. As long as the focus is on the services tab, then the volume on the keyboard and the rocker will both work. If you click on another window, or if you click on a tab other than the services tab, both sets of buttons stop working. Also, both sets of buttons work fine in Linux.

Hello all, I have a Thinkpad Yoga 14 (20FY0002US), which was purchased 14 months ago, so it is just out of warrenty. It worked great, although I only use it when I travel. Starting from a few days ago, some of keys of it are not working. These keys are near the edges of the keyboard, such as "1", "q", "a", "z", the ESC key, the windows key, the space key, and the backspace key. The keys in the middle as wel as the function keys are fine.   I believe that It is not an issue related to the windows, but the problem exists even in the BIOS. I tried to update the BIOS and the drivers, but no help. I also have disconnected and reconnected the ribbon cables of the keyboard, no help as well. Any help/suggestions? Thanks a lot.

Hi all,I'm not sure if I posted in the correct forum and I'm new to this so bear with me.  So I bought this laptop around 5 months ago and only about 1 month ago the left side of the touch screen is not working. It would register that something is touching the bottom left side because I have my visual feedback turned on and after a half a minute of that, you can see it go haywire and register nearly the entire 1/3 left side. After 30 seconds of it going haywire, it would stop. And then either the entire left side or just the bottom left side would completely not register any touches at all. This wouldn't happen all the time, just every other day and definitely enough to be extremely annoying.  I bought my laptop in to get fixed for a completely unrelated problem because it's still under warranty and I told them about this issue but it doesn't seem like they fixed it and I'm thinking it's because it just didn't happen to happen to them when they had it. Also, I'm not sure if it's a software issue (since I don't think that's covered by warranty) or hardware. I have Windows 10 Pro, 64 bit OS, pen and touch support with 10 points.  Is there anyway that you guys can help me on this? It would be much appreciated.

This began about six months ago. I picked up my laptop and it was unresponsive and the red logo lights was blinking. I forced shutdown with the power button and restarted it. When it was back on I could get power but no data transfer from any usb ports, the touch screen didn't work, and if i let it sleep it automatically went unresponsive with the same error light. I checked for viruses. None. I updated all possible drivers. Nothing. I even restored my computer to factory settings and reinstalled windows. Nada. I use it heavily for school, so I haven't had time to send it in for warranty. One day, I turned it on and everything worked again. Wonderful. A couple days later I opened it and it was back to its previous state. PLEASE HELP

My old keyboard was refusing to re-initialize after the peripheral reset during win 7 boot. It's about a decade old, so I just assumed it was dead. I replaced it with my wireless keyboard I use for working on computers, Ms laser 8000. My keyboard now initializes fine, but shift L and Shift E are non functional. Sticky keys is off, along with all the other accessibility features. The keys work fine without shift pressed, and shift works with very other key.

I'm out of ideas, anyone have some?

I posted similair to this with no reply, hope the title attracts help, I need it bad.
In short, my pc started acting wacky opening multiple windows when I click an icon. I tried many things including repair and reinstall windows. My problem is I cannot use any number keys or the numpad. It is like shift is stuck on. Everything I can do to fix it I need numbers, for winxp repair or setup I need numbers for cdkey, for fdisk I need numbers to choose options. To update bios I need the period in between the file name and bin. I tried deleting the main partition and starting fresh with win98se but the cd will not boot into setup. Big problems all around.
I tried an additional keyboard and same problem.

hello, i'm not at all confident with laptops as such, and a few keys on my laptop have stopped working and i'm havin to use an onscreen keyboard in conjunction with my actual keyboard. from some searces it would appear this is a common problem with my laptop. my laptop is two years old, i haven't spilled anyting on it or damaged it in any way that i can think of. i dont have the time or money to have it sent away, as i'm studying out of the country and can't have it sent home etc.  i was just wanting to make sure that if i bought a usb keyboard this would still most likely work with this kind of problem?

Hi, An external usb keyboard should work fine. Regarding your notebooks keyboard, it may be worth trying the following. Shut down the notebook, unplug the AC Adapter and then remove the battery.  Hold  down the Power button for 30 seconds.  Re-insert the battery and plug in the AC Adapter. Tap away at the esc key as you start the notebook to launch the Start-up Menu and then select f10 to enter the bios menu.  Press f5 to load the defaults ( this is sometimes f9, but the menu at the bottom will show the correct key ), use the arrow keys to select 'Yes' and hit enter.  Press f10 to save the setting and again use the arrow keys to select 'Yes' and hit enter. Regards, DP-K

Hi All,I sent my laptop in for repair because the left shift key was sticking.  7025187370 is my Service Order Number. I received an email from Jason that works for Flex for permission to replace my harddrive. I asked why and got no response, but said yes anyways because I use this laptop for work. Remember all I had was a keyboard issue. I received the laptop back, keyboard was still the same. I spoke with support and asked them what they written in their notes for the diagnostics. He said, "keyboard cable is loose and replaced ssd is faulty (no reason). When I called in and told them that I was not able to run my virtual machines (I upgraded to to Windows 10 Pro to use the Hyper-V feature), they told me it was a software issue. They also said that they replaced the harddrive with the same model as I got it from Best Buy in DEC 2016. I tested my VM's that I backed up on the original HD onto a seperate machine and they work fine. Hello,

My G, H, apostrophe and backspace keys suddenly stopped working on my keyboard. I do not think this is a physical issue, because it happened suddenly with just these keys, and I have seen upon Google searching that others have had a problem with the exact same combination of keys suddenly not working. Is there a way to fix this without having to reinstall system and lose my Microsoft Office and other installed programs? (I have an HP notebook with Windows 10, by the way).

I have tried ejecting battery and unplugging cable and holding down Start button, but it didn't work. The onscreen keyboard works, but it's a pain to have to use. I know I could buy an external keyboard, but I'd prefer to fix this problem if I can.

Thanks in advance.

hello

my left and right shift keys are no longer working correctly. i didn't spill any water or anything on my keyboard. it just stopped working overnight. my keyboard is a logitech elite keyboard with a ps2 adapter. i've tried switching it to usb and the problem is still there.

my left shift just doesn't respond anymore. nothing happens when i press it.

my right shift key, however, does weird things when pressed multiple times. it seems to be doing things like pressing enter and other combinations.

the above mbmz thing is an example of what it did when i pressed it a few times. it also somehow did the keyboard shortcut for back on my browser.

so i'm not sure what to do. i've cleaned the keys and it's still giving me this problem. i also installed the logitech software for my keyboard but it didn't really do anything.i've also verified that it is a problem with the keyboard and not with my computer. i plugged in an old keyboard and it works fine. is it time to buy a new keyboard/

I am running Windows Vista home edition on a Sony Vaio VGN-FZ140E laptop, and i'm having a sudden problem with my shift keys. At about 2 pM this afternoon, both of my shift keys started behaving very, very strangely. The rest of my keyboard works fine. This seems to be the problem--

Both of my shift keys will stop working. i will press shift, then the thing i want to shift, but it doesn't work. if i keep trying, EVENTUallY it seems to work, so it's like the problem is going in and out. i've made sure that sticky, filter, etc keys isn't turned on, but it seems more like a tech/windows issue than a hardware issue, since it's BoTH shift keys that are doing this, and all my other keys work fine. This is what it looks like if i hold down the shift key and type;

so, as you can see, it's like the shift is going on and off, even when it's being held.

Hi. I browsed some other threads concerning this problem, but none of those solutions has worked for me. The problem affects only the letters z,x,c,v, and the numbers 1,2,3,4,7,8,9,0. I can't make an uppercase version of those characters. When i launched the on-screen keyboard, I see the shift keys lighting up when I touch them, so it isn't a matter of physical damage to the keys... I went into the device manager and uninstalled all the keyboard drivers there - at least I think I did... and they just came back with the same problem... And i plugged in a Logitech keyboard and its drivers worked just fine. So short of wiping the entire drive with a fresh install of Win7, what can i do? I had to use the onscreen keyboard just to type the question mark. Thank
