I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

We've now had three different Windows XP systems come in here for this problem so I wanted to see if anyone else was seeing this. It has happened with both Windows XP Home and Windows XP Media Center (based off Professional) systems. Two were Dells, one was a custom built one.

After installing a fresh copy of Windows and loading drivers, everything works fine. After doing the first batch of available Windows updates, the system reboots, but you cannot click anything on the Start menu, taskbar, etc. If you hit CTRL-ALT-DEL and open the task manager (either automatically as in XP Home, or by clicking Task Manager on the screen that comes up with MCE/Pro), you can then close the task manager, and everything runs appropriately. It doesn't matter how long the system sits there, this continues to happen until you go through that process.

I assumed we had a bad Windows image here at first, but after it started doing it with a whole different version, now I'm skeptical of one of the updates, and wanted to see if anyone was experiencing something similar.

A:Need to load Task Manager before Start menu will open

Hi

A few questions

Are they being brought to you with this problem or is it a problem that you are having with installs that you do?

Are you using the same mouse for all of these installs?
When I do installs for customers, I use an old mouse and keyboard on my bench (my KVM caused problems once so I stopped using it for this).

Where are you getting the copy of XP from and what updates are you referring to? Is it when you update to SP3 or something else?

I'm encountering a strange problem after my PC has been on for several hours. After several hours of use, I am no longer able to access my task manager. I hit ctrl+shift+esc and I see the task manager icon in my "notification area" (that's what it's called in the taskbar properties), but no window pops up. Also, I don't see any CPU usage. Everything else works fine.

Any ideas would help.

PS~I've extensively scanned and eliminated viruses and spyware, and i'm running avast! antivirus as well as spysweeper and MS antispyware. My Hijack This! also shows nothing out of the ordinary.

Please help- any useful information is highly welcome.
As the title mentioned, my file explorer, start menu, and task manager are all cripplingly slow (and probably anything else associated with these). We are talking click on start menu and wait 5 seconds before it shows up. Same extremely delayed response for file explorer and task manager.

Everything else runs fine - this is a decent workstation meant for image processing. I run access, excel, firefox with 15+tabs, mem-hungry GIS programs and all kinds of stuff simultaneously and it handles everything fine. processes show 90+% idle, cpu usage between 1 and 5%.
This problem occurs maybe 20% of the time I am using the computer.

I thought it might have been a recent version of endnote i installed, but i uninstalled that. I have an updated spybot search and destroy that I ran and cleaned up things, the systems uses an up to date symantec antivirus (it is installed on all university computers) I ran kapersky online and 1 other i forgot and found 1 virus which I cleaned. It found file labeled "suspicious" which was an exported contact list - *.pst file from outlook which I don't suspect to be a problem.

Hi..

I have a problem with my Task Manager.

I tried everything to open it. Ctrl+Alt+Del , Ctrl+Shft+Esc, Right-Clicking in the Task Bar, Search and Clicking taskmgr.exe, %systemroot%, still Task manager doesn't open.

I've read something about enabling it through regedit but there's no Disable Taskmgr entry in my HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies
I don't know why.
i just download a task manager fixer that will enable it, it prompt that it is enable but then again, task manager still doesn't appear..

Please Help!

Thanks!

Hello pinkcar,

Please copy this page to Notepad since you will not have any browsers open while you are carrying out these instructions.

Hey,
So I've been browsing the forums hoping to find a solution to my problem. When I tried to boot up my PC running Windows 7 professional, it booted up normally but then once loaded only showed the background, without any icons or even the start menu. I can right click on the back ground and receive a menu from which I can navigate to the control panel and see all of my options, so my computer is functional. Faced with this problem, I naturally control-alt-deleted my way into task manager, only to find that when I did that, I came up with only a black screen with my cursor on it. If I move up and down with the arrow keys and press enter for a while, I can get back to the wallpaper. I tried experimenting with this, but nothing has worked. I can boot up in safe mode, which works fine. Task manager is totally functional there. Everyone solution that I've seen to problems similar to this has required me to have access to task manager which I don't have, except in safe mode.
I've run several anti-virus and Malwarebytes scans, but that has done nothing.
Any help is appreciated.

I was viewing a web page the other day and a bunch of pop ups came on my screen with some messages that I cancelled or X-ed out. After viewing these web pages, my desktop wallpaper became a blue screen, my icons gone, and am unable to bring up the right click menu. My start menu's program list is also blank, as well as the icons on it. The task manager was also disabled, but I fixed it with STOPzilla, which found a program called something like Taskmanager_disable.exe. My internet browser also redirects me to several search engines with every search I type, and can sometimes hear websites running in the background that task manager doesn't even detect. Some of my games work on the internet, but interestingly, every time I attempt to log on World of Warcraft, it says an error occurred and the program shuts down (this only started happening after the virus). I do NOT have the windows xp disc, but is there an alternative approach I can take to resolve this issue?

I have an old HP machine and when I turn it on it does not indicate that windows is loading or even give me the option of pressing ESC or F10 to get to the BIOS. It goes straight to the desktop but I can't see the Start Menu or access programs. If I hit Ctrl, Alt, Delete, nothing happens. Any thoughts as to how I could get to the BIOS? I'd like to load LINUX on it, probably SUSE since it's an older machine.

If you are going to install something other than Windows...what's with BIOS, Start Menu, etc.?

When is the last time the system worked properly? When did things change?

Pertinent error messages received?

One thing I suggest...before you attempt to install any O/S, it's worth the time to run the appropriate diagnostic on the hard drive.

The task manager on my computer has been disabled and the Search facility has disappeared from my Start Menu. I think this is linked with a virus my computer picked up a few months ago - generic atr. Good evening - I am grateful to see all of the examples soutions to so many problems. I would like to join the ranks of your supporters.

My Dell desktop starts up incredibly slowly - we have Windows XP.
Upon startup the only thing that is accesible is the C: prompt and the Task Manager. There is NO Start Menu or any icons.
The Task Manager has very limited capabilities - I can 'Run' Internet Explorer, it shows up in the Processes tab of the Task Manager, but it just flashes in the background for a moment and is not accesible. I can open programs like Palm Desktop.
I can start up in Safe Mode. In Safe Mode I cannot connect to the internet.

I tried to load SUPERantiSpyware.exe and I could access it on my G: stick drive, and even save it to my C: drive, but when I try to run it I get a message that Windows Installer Services could not be accessed.

I have read about Hijackthis, but I don't know how to set it up on my crippled computer.

I have run CCleaner.

I believe I have all of the Windows Disks.

Can you please walk me through the basic steps to start my journey back to a clean computer?

Many Thanks,
Rachel

Have you tried this?

Start up the Windows XP Task Manager and select the Applications tab.

Now select the New Task button at the bottom of the window. A new smaller window will appear. In it simply type:

explorer.exe

explorer.exe is the Windows Program Manager (or Windows Explorer.) It manages the Windows Graphical Shell including the Start menu, taskbar, desktop, and File Manager. By restarting this process the graphical interface for Windows will reappear.

I've had the Task Manager loading at start up for a good while now but it just started freezing while loading which in turn freezes my task bar and start menu. I get on hour glass and neither responds to clicks and whatnot. I started in safe mode and it's fine now so I was wondering if anyone knew of a reason it would randomly start doing this. Here's my configuration:

Gateway PC
XP Media Center

1g RAM

Here's what's starting at boot(not a crazy amount and it's not really slow, just this present problem):

MalewareBytes
nod32
AdMuncher
Java Updater
MS ActiveSync
Task Manager

About to restart with the delays implemented to see if that helps. If not, I'll delete Task Manager from the start up folder which I'm sure will fix it. I do want to keep the Task Manager loading at start up so if any has any ideas, I'm all ears. I'll report back the results of the restarts. Thanks.

Hi, an often reported issue- tho' yours has the added run box report.
As I don't know the history... as in 'did this ever work' 'is it a clean install or an upgrade' 'what did you do before this happened' etc I'll take a simple view.

I will assume you don't use disk imaging, else you would have restored an image you'd created prior to this happening. Highly recommended strategy to back up, preserve your PC and your sanity without tech help.

You could have conflicting 3rd party programs from an AV ovwards, so yuo could check whether these work
a. after clean boot
b. in safe mode

You could try the standard
chkdsk c: \F from an admin command prompt.
Then
sfc /scannow from the same.
Finally there is a DISM command you can run.

However, I would recommend you run chkdsk, then do an in place upgrade install, one of the really good things about Win 10.
This keeps most settings and all your progs.
(Note disk imaging can provide a much faster fix).

- Black screen, cant see anything but a small icon of an standard application box, when I start in safe mode I get the words "safe mode" in the four corners like normal but still nothing but black screen.

- When I push ctrl+alt+del it goes to the normal screen but there is no option for "start task manager" its the all the other options. (this also happens in safe mode.

- If I push the windows key the start menu pops up for a brief second but goes away quickly, I cannot click on anything nor can I see anything but that black screen with that small pic of a application. I cant access the registry or run any programs.

What should I do?

I tried running the win 7 pro installation disk but when I click "repair computer" it says that this disk does not match your OS version.

I am running Win 7 pro 64gb
On a custom build computer

Any help would be great thanks!

A couple of weeks ago (well maybe 10 days ago) I turned on my computer to see that the desktop was nothing but the photograph background I usually see. My icons were gone! Taskbar, Start Menu, too.

I tried CTRL-ESC. Didn't work. I tried to run explorer.exe. Didn't work. I can't even access Control Panel (control.exe). I don't have malware or a virus (though I did just do a big clean, but only the speed of my computer improved; I still have to run all my programs through Task Manager), but I think the damage was probably done by a virus or trojan.

I've tried the Fix on Kelly's Korner. I've tried looking at Microcoft's page for help, but I can't find anything. I even tried copying the explorer.exe file from my machine at work and putting it in place of the other explorer file (I kept the original, though renamed it). Nothing has worked. I'm fed up and don't want to have to do a clean install. Can someone help me?

I believe I have a virus, but have no clue how to stop it. Today I put a SD card in my computer's card reader, but it never read the card. I clicked the drive it was supposed to be in and my computer froze. Ctrl Alt Del didn't work, so I restarted my computer manually. The computer's start up took around 20 minutes to complete. I tried opening AVG Anti Virus Free but it won't open. My computer's firewall was shut off, and it wouldn't even let me access the firewall's settings. Mal Ware Bites and SUPERAntiSpyware Free do actually open, but I am unable to update the definitions. When I try updating definitions, Mal Ware Freezes and won't close, and SUPERAntiSpyware Free tells me it can't close because "it is locked in the system". Please help me out.

My brother is using Windows 7 and suddenly after boot menu the computer reaches his wallpaper, with the mouse icon moving fine but no foldiers, files, startmenu or anything else showing.

I people with the same problem online opened Task Manager and opened Explorer.exe to make it work, only Ctrl Alt Del brings us to a black screen which disappears after a few seconds and take us back to the blank wallpaper. I can reach the Control Panel or anything else really when I right click the wallpaper and go to any of the options that bring me into some folder.. but when I'm in a folder and click anything, it won't work. I tried to open Task Manager like that too, or even Explorer.exe, but nothing happens.

Safe Mode works fine bytheway and can't seem to find any errors.

He doesn't have an Anti Virus has his subscription finished lately.. I tried to download AVG during safe mode with networking, but I'm unsure whether it's doing the job right..

Any other options?

Thanks in advance,

"He doesn't have an Anti Virus has his subscription finished lately"

Big mistake. A PC without up-to-date antivirus software will become infected with malware within hours if it's connected to the internet. Please post on the malware forum here: Virus/Trojan/Spyware Help - Tech Support Forum

You must install an up-to-date antivirus as a first step, otherwise the advice you get from the malware forum on removing existing malware will be a waste of time as your PC will just get infected again.

Hi,

I have a small problem with my Windows 7. Here's what happened:

Yesterday, my pc was running fine. I turned it on at 10am and it was running well. My sister ordered a new router so I set it up for her (AirPort Extreme). I installed the utility for it, was a simple setup for me. After that, I connect to it wirelessly and I see that windows update has a few security updates. They install as I turn off the pc. I then turn it back on a few hrs later and notice that when it reaches the login screen, it takes a few secs for it to load. This is unusual being that the days before it was always ready to receive input. So I login, get the welcome screen, and my desktop screen. Taskbar loads as usual, however I can't get anything to show up when I click on it. I think at first that its Comodo (is in training mode) so I close it out. Still nothing. I then press ctrl+alt+delete. Nothing. I then press it rapidly to see what happens. After a few mins, my screen turns black. A message then shows up that ctrl+alt+delete has been pressed but due to something that it won't show up. Had to press either the power button or esc to leave the screen. Safe mode works. I do a system restore back to when the windows update and to the installation of the router. I scanned and haven't found anything yet. Today, my pc looks like its running fine but its still taking a few secs on the login screen and the desktop still idles. I'm going to contact HP to see what they can do b... Read more

Updated to Windows 10 from Windows 8.1 two weeks ago.
Had problems with Firefox.  Tried to download to replace existing Firefox.  CNET site appeared to be correct but something seemed wrong so I killed the download. But.
- The windows start menu doesn't come up when I click on the icon, but if I right-click, a text menu does appear and lets me, for example, shut down.
.- If I click on the Windows End icon in the task bar, the screen flashes but End does not come up.  Ditto for the Windows Store icon.
-  Somewhere SpyBot S&D was erased, but I was able to download it.
- If I double-click on a photo in Windows Explorer, I get a popup that lists the name of the jpeg and says Invalid Entry to Registry.  If I right click on the photo and go to any of the options the photo is opened except if I choose Photo.
- Firefox cannot properly display the Yahoo mail page, though Pale Moon and Opera can.
- I have Avast Anti-Virus and MalwareBytes Anti-Malware and when I run their scans, they find no issues.

SO there are a few issues that I need help with.

A:windows 10 problems - start menu doesn't appear, windows key doesn't work, etc

Hello,
Well the first thing you should try is to Run System Restore to before all of these problems started or to when you first installed Windows 10.
Then try to download Firefox from there website
https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/new/
Third thing is I would recommend to get rid of Avast it is low end and could be allowing virus I recommend ether McAfee or Norton Security.

Those are some things to think about
but it is all up to you when making your final decision

Good morning folks,

Something is up with this machine and I need help.

Background:-

I have had ongoing problems with IE9, which I rolled back to IE8, now I have a browser but get a 404 error when I try to add new search providers.
I have uninstalled iLivid, searchnu toolbar and a ?7? zip file yesterday. My desktop gadgets may or may not load on startup. Sometimes startup is fine, sometimes (on a restart) its very slow. Window Safe mode with Networking seems to be working alot better than full mode. My browser was Chrome but when I tried to download programs( IE9, Malwarebytes, Spybot etc) they were all "interrupted" I have managed to get Firefox installed now vis USB transfer.

Security:-

I have Windows Firewall turned on as well as Comodo Internet Security. Norton 360 has recently expired, that is when I installed Comodo, but I havent uninstalled Norton yet.'I also seem to McAfee on here too.

Today's Question:-

I have attempted to open Task Manager this morning to see what processes are working. The swirl comes up but the program does not open. What do I do now please?

Hello,

For some reason, I have numerous Task Manager windows opening by themselves. When I go to them, the 'End Task' is not a clickable box. It is greyed out. The only thing I can do is move them down to the bottom of the task bar. When I press 'Ctrl Alt Del' to bring up the Task Manager, it just creates another one. Has anyone seen this? I don't know where to start to determine how they are getting created, and I don't know how to eliminate them. I end up creating more by trying to eliminate with 'Ctrl Alt Del'. Any input is greatly appreciated!

Thanks, Lynne

Download and run Adaware, Spybot S&D, and TrendMicro's free online virus scan, because this sounds like a virus. Normally I would just redirect you to that section of the forums, but they seem awfully swamped as of late.

You can get links for those programs in my signature below, make sure to update your virus and spyware definitions before scanning, and be sure to do a deep system scan.

If the problem remains, visit the "Security Anti-virus HijackThis" forum linked below

I'm using Windows XP Pro sp3 that is "protected" by AVG, Malwarebytes, Threatfire, and PC Tools Firewall. I also recently "cleaned up" my Dell Inspiron 8600 (yes, I know, old) with CCleaner. I've also tried other "cleaners" such as Wipe, Privacymantra, and index.dat analyzer.PROBLEM: My computer has ample free space and memory because there's absolutely nothing on it besides these programs, firefox, and office (no music, few word docs) so I'm wondering why these programs have recently been "NOT RESPONDING" particularly firefox. PLUS, when I try to stop them using the Windows Task Manager, it takes FOREVER to open and when it finally does, tons of windows pop open on my menu bar and none of which work. Essentially, the task manager can not close the "NOT RESPONDING" programs, so I just have to manually shut off my laptop.Today, when I turned on my computer, PC Tools Firewall said that an "external source" altered some files (which the program fixed itself) but it recommended that I use my spyware to check for any malware. So I tried to open Malwarebytes which was "NOT RESPONDING" and PC Tools Firewall which was "NOT RESPONDING". Again, the Task Manager took forever to open and then tons of windows eventually popped up on the menu bar. None of the Task Manager windows would shut off the computer, so again I was forced to manually shut it off.I downloaded Hijackthis on Safemod... Read more

Next I go to msconfig and look at my system confirguration. I try undoing things there only to get this message, "An Access Denied error was returned while attempting to change a service. You may need to log on using an Administrator account to make the specified changes." So I cant get the Google toolbar updater from starting up, other programs as well.

I hope someone can shed some light on these two problems and I appreciate any and all advice.

Msconfig isn't the best thing to use to disable startup programs. There are some good freeware apps that do a better job such as Startup Control Panel:

I like using WinPatrol to disable programs that load at boot:

Tried to Alt Tab with no evidence of the many Task manager windows. It eventually locks up and a reboot is required. Haven't tried safe mode yet. Anyone heard of anything similar?
