It's Me Again...American Megatrends Disk Failure Imminent

Q: It's Me Again...American Megatrends Disk Failure Imminent

American Megatrends
Hard Disk Failure is Imminent
Please back up hard disk and have it replaced!
Press F10 for Setup, Press F2 to Continue
My pc just recovered from Poweliks / Adclicker trojan with dc3's help.
Thread is here:
Speccy ran previously in that thread:
Computer is:
HP Pavilion m9000t
Windows Vista, SP2
NOTES: Some things that happened since Friday after using the computer and making sure things were working.
Installed Flash player update.  Norton Full System Scan ran late Friday night.  Everything normal.
Yahoo Toolbar showed up in IE9 out of the blue.  I did have it in add-ons but it was disabled permanently but I could only disable it temporarily.  When I tried to disable permanently, it said contact system administrator.  So I uninstalled it from Control Panel/Programs.
Sunday night I got a performance alert from Norton NIS about high usage problem and 176 actions performed.  I copied to notepad and from what I can remember it had something to do with Firefox cache/doomed files and I think they were deleted when I cleared Firefox cache.
I ran Malwarebytes scan Sunday night.  Normal.
Shut down the computer normally and turned it on today and got the Megatrends  warning.
My priority is to backup my files. Photos, videos, documents, etc.  I was organizing some files over the weekend so I could do a backup.
The Megatrends screen has been up all day.  I have no idea what happens when I press F10 or F2 or which one to press.

Preferred Solution: It's Me Again...American Megatrends Disk Failure Imminent

I recommend downloading and trying SP Photo Recovery. It will help find and retrieve your lost files.

I've used it in the past to recover photos, music, videos, and other multimedia files, regardless if the file has been deleted, lost, damaged or corrupted.

You can download it direct from this link http://goo.gl/UDbKNE. (This link will open the download page so you can save a copy to your computer.)

F10 will take you to BIOS setup. F2 will continue to boot to Windows. What is interesting is Speccy shows the SMART status as good.

What does this mean?

A:American Megatrends

This means that the hard drive is about to fail. S.M.A.R.T is a utility that monitors the health of the hard drive and reports any potential problems, like an early warning system. When it says "S.M.A.R.T Status Bad" This is not a good thing. Does it give you an option to bypass and get to Windows? If so backup your important data.

Need to know will the HP 110-220z American Megatrends BIOS support booting from an Ubuntu Live DVD ISO  on a usb thumb drive with a boot sector I need to fix a Ubuntu 16.04 load sectors corruption problem.  the cd/dvd drive has diedbeen through all the disable security and finally got the USB thumb drive listed in the memory list.  The version of the BIOS is 2.15.126 I have not been able to find any specs on what it can and cannot do. Now I have lost Ubuntu Grub loader and the machine starts loading win7 each time. It has not been used for over 2 years and Microsoft will demand two days of updates be loaded before I can access any drive from it. I need the live CD Ubuntu to load from the thumb drive so I can fix grub and use utilities to fix the inability to read certian sectors. [Have run HP diagnostics on the Hard disk, no problems found.]

The support page for that model indicates it came with Windows 8.1, which means it should also have UEFI BIOS.  Depending on the way the Ubuntu Live was added to the flash drive, it might not be done correctly.  See this page on Ubuntu and UEFI BIOS.  BTW: it needs to be a 64bit installhttps://help.ubuntu.com/community/UEFI

My Asus P5N32 SLI SE Deluxe doesn't like my new 4GB of 800MHz ram. The ram is fine. XP 32 bit runs fine with only 2-3 GB in use, but Vista Ultimate 64-Bit is terrible, running at least 5 times slower and maxing out the processor and freezing a couple of minutes just to open Fire Fox. I am considering buying a new mobo, but I heard there is another way.

Some people have gone into their BIOS and enabled an option called "Memory Remapping," which fixed the problem. The catch is: My BIOS doesn't have that option for some odd reason... Surprise, surprise after my cellphone provider had to send 2 SIM cards to me for the phone to work and my External Backup HD had failed just a couple of months after I bought it(Goodbye 100+ Gigabytes of data).

I checked the manual that went with my mobo, and the bios version in the manual and on my computer were EXACTLY the same! Though, the menu in the Manual had many more options than did the one on my computer. So, I go to Asus's website and download the latest official (not beta) driver. Then, I pop in the Asus CD that came with my mobo and tried to run "Asus Update". Every time I run this I get an error message: "Unable to create NT driver... Read more

Hello, experts!
For the past few weeks, I've been seeing the AMI screen everytime I turn on my computer. It wasn't like that before, so I have no clue why it's showing up now. I pressed f1 and f2 numerous times and went through every session, still I cannot find the problem of why it keeps appearing during startup.

Since I just received a new computer this April, I'm not very familiar with the new AMI then I was with Windows XP. Instead, I used screen-shot to show my AMI screen. I hope this will help!

I then hoped it was fixed and turned it on again, to find it went back to turning itself on and off every 10 seconds. Ok, so before you reply, please make note that I didn't build this pc myself, it was custom built in a company by order. I don't know a thing about inside of computer. Of course, I know the main parts, but repairing or tinkering, nooo.

Pc specs:
Intel i5-2400 3.1 Ghz Quad Core
8 GB of RAM
Nvidia GeForce 550ti Graphics Card.

The thing is, in my opinion, this pc is properly cooled and built, because I've been having it for almost a year and I've never had this problem before.

So okay, I got back home and turned on my pc. And I noticed a problem. My video was slow. Videos on youtube were slow and choppy, I tried like moving windows and their movement was slow. At first I thought its a video card or monitor problem and I tried rebooting my pc. When I pressed restart, before booting windows, the computer shows the window:
American Megatrends

(Computer info)

CPU over temperature error!
Press F1 to continue setup.
Is it really overheated? Because I've never had this problem before, I didn't had it the other day I was using it and I'm using it a lot. What to do? I really can't just open up the case and see the problem, I'm not that experienced.

A:American Megatrends - CPU Over Temperature ERROR

Why can't it be overheating? Things do break, or come loose, and they can get dirty too.

Download HW Monitor and see what the CPU/Core temps are, for that matter check all the temps. Best would be to post a screen shot of HW Monitor.

HW Monitor: http://www.cpuid.com/softwares/hwmonitor.html

If the computer is truly overheating then it will need to be opened up to see why.

System wil shut down in 15 seconds!!!

A:American Megatrends message unknown

OK, you are running the system overclocked. Not too much however it shows both ram and cpu running faster than normal. It is probably the board failing however the very first thing I would do would be to return ALL settings to stock. Clear RTC [cmos] to return settings to stock. Once you clean RTC, pull the pw connectors from ALL drives; both hd and optical. Now disconnect any usb device ie printer, scanner, external drive, etc.

Pw ON and see if the board will successfully complete POST.

Remember there is NO safe overclock. All overclocking entails some degree of risk.

A friend of mine came to me with this problem. He has an American Megatrends motherboard and can't get it to boot past the Checking NV RAM.. part

here is what is on the screen when it freezes
American Megatrends
TYAN TSUNAMI AT V2.00.01 012520001800
Intel 440BX AGPset

P II, 400Mhz
Checking NVRam..

then down at the bottom of the screen it says

What we have done:
Switched PCI video card to another PCI slot
Disconnected everything but the floppy/cd/harddrive
Reseated the RAM, switched RAM slots, and tried different RAM modules with ones that are known to work.

He says 1 time it made it past checking NVRam (where it counts the RAM) and then froze when it first said hit del to enter BIOS.

Edit: He also remembered that when he first booted he had 3 RAM modules in and all it would say is American Megatrends with the logo and that was it, so he removed 2 and left 1 and thats where we are now.

2nd Edit: When I asked him what happens when he tries it with no RAM he says "nothing, it beeps".

Anyone have any ideas on what to try next? Could it just be that the motherboard is bad where the RAM fits?

A:Problems getting to POST on American Megatrends MOBO

Alright - I just recieved word that it now works. Which leads me to believe that even though it appeared we had the RAM set properly it wasn't.
Now it boots into Win98 and just gives the usual errors when you don't have proper drivers installed and such, I'm going to let him work on that on his own because I think he has a pretty good handle on getting that set straight.
(he pulled this PC together from scrap parts so even getting this thing to run is a plus for him)
I'll post back with any other motherboard related problems that might crop up.

I recently finished building a low budget gaming rig, after installing windows 7, the drivers for my hardware, doing updates...etc, my bios warned me that my hard drive's status is "BAD", I skipped this warning and booted into windows where I was informed that my hard drive could fail soon and I should back up. I should mention that I formerly used this drive in an external enclosure for almost two years before using it in my rig.

I backed up and ran crystal clear disk info (see results attached). What should my next course of action be? Could I have done something wrong in the building process to cause this?

A:Imminent disk failure?

The disk is going bad, to put it in simple terms.

It could continue for a while longer, but I would consider replacing it.

There might be an option that could repair the damage (I think), but I'm sure someone else will say if there is.

hi folks. good day to you all. my name is max. i can install windows and manage basic troubleshooting related to software without any problems. a couple of months back i installed windows xp on my friends computer and it was working fine but a month after installation, when he booted the comp up, he would get the startup options msg (safe, normal and so on) instead of windows booting up normally. when he tried to boot it up in any mode, the windows xp loading logo would just appear and windows just kept restarting. i thought it might be a software problem ,so i made a fresh install of xp and it was working fine . but now once again the same problem seems to have occured. this screen pops up when he starts the comp. i have included the image he sent me (its a bit blurry but you can make out whats on it). i searched about it and as you can see in the image, the problem seems to be about CMOS settings. now, from what i have learned so far after researching about it is that its either the CMOS battery that has lost its charge, died, or maybe its just a CMOS (or bios? not sure) settings problem. can you guys please take a look at the image and tell me what exactly is wrong and what steps i would have to take to fix his problem? thank you in advance.

As the date in wrong, the CMOS battery is likely dead.

I have a HP ENVY 810-170st, 24GB Ram, Windows 64 On boot, I'm receiving Intel's "imminent failure" message for my 16gb SSD disk cache.  My SSD shows up in File Explorer as: Recovery Image (D): The Intel RST application shows that disk data cache is enabled I see nothing about accelerate. It seems strange that I can read and write to this SSD (though I don't do so). Currently the properties show:     13.4GB USED    1.89GB FREE SPACE so it is totally maxed out.  I'm confused....apparently the disk has folders and partitions associated with Recovery...frankly I don't know if that was on the system when I received it, or if somehow I wrote to this disk when creating a recovery image in the past !?! I believe this is how I received the system. So it seems like maybe it isn't even working as a "disk cache" and more like a baby SSD, but what do I know except that it is failing.  FYI: I've just made a system recovery image on a flash drive and backed up all data to a USB drive. I realize that perhaps all I need to do is power off and install a new SSD disk cache and all will work fine, so here are my questions: Can I just install a new...say 60gb cache drive... to replace the failing one in the drive bay without having to somehow image the old SSD or save some kind of settings. Will the system just roll with it, meaning will my installed programs...MODO, Rhino, Zbrush, etc. just launch and run without problems?... Yesterday evening I began running diagnostics on my computer because it was running slowly. I ran an option provided under my program menu which is titled PC tools. After 4 hours of testing (blue screen) which tested 5 items, my screen was then prompted to bios. It would not allow me to enter F1 for set up or F2 to continue. I made several attempts to re-start in safe mode, but my computer was frozen in bios. And stated hard disk imminent failure. Need to replace. Therefore, I turned my computer off for about 1/2 hour. Currently I am up and running, but am worried this will occur again at another horrible time. I run Windows XP Home Edition, I have a Compaq Presario AMD Processor 3500, with 1.79 GHz, 448mb of Ram.

I have since backed up my data onto my flash-drive, but with impending finals in 3 weeks I am very concerned......Any help would be greatly appreciated. Should I replace the hard drive, and if so any particular brand? Computer currently has samsung sp1604nr listed as its master drive. Or should I purchase a new pc tower? Also, the computer is only 13 months old, and is primarily used for work/school.

Please note, I am not a computer literate, but do know more than just the basic....Please us laymen's terms.

A:Hard Disk Failure imminent

I would imagine I'd have heeded the graphic warning message generated by S.M.A.R.T... and backed up all my files, then run Spinpoint on the drive, or simply replaced it...

There is an old trick of placing a dying hard drive into a deep freeze overnight, which can enable some recovery of data the next morning - but that really only works for what are essentially mechanical errors and your drive may have had different issues

I was using my computer and all of a sudden it froze. It stayed like that and didn't do anything, but it was making some noises. It sounded like a clicking sound. I was hoping that it would come back to normal so that I could save what I was working on.

I turned the computer off. When I turned it back on, I got a black screen with a list of Pri master, 3rd master, usb mass storage devices and so on. At the bottom of the page, it says the model # of the hard drive with the following message:

"Hard disk failure is imminent.
Please back up your hard disk and have it replaced!

Press <F1> for Setup, <F2> to continue"

I would make a back up like it says, but I can't get it to boot up Windows (XP).

If I choose F2, it will say:

"reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key"

Is there anything that I can do to get it to boot up windows without losing any data and try to back it up?

All of the sudden my laptop has this black screen with the above message. It also tells me to backup the content immediately and run the Hard Disk test in System Diagnostics. First how can I back up anything since I cannot get past the black screen? Second when I run the Hard Disk test (quick or extensive), it tells me Smart check and Short DST not available.  I am not an expert in computers, but when I bought this back in early 2013 the first thing I did was make a recovery disk, it only did the Repair disc and no others. Since it was newer than the one I had before that made 5, I thought is all I needed, but when I insert it does not work.  This is running Windows 7, not really sure if is a 32 or 64 bit sorry. It is an i7 and has an SSD. I went all out on this computer when I bought since I detest Windows 8. Spent a little over $1100.00, so I would appreciate any help.

A:"SMART hard disk check has detected an imminent failure"

Hi,  Thank you for posting your concern on the Support Forums and sorry about the issue you are having. F2 Test on HDD giving error message ? SMART Check not installed Short DST not installed means that the HDD is not getting detected by the computer you might want to go to BIOS by tapping F10 and check if you see HDD listed. If not then yes HDD is not getting detected at all by the unit. I?m not sure how comfortable you are tearing down the unit to reseat the parts. But if you are, you might want to reseat the HDD, if that works well and good, if not nothing much can be done as either the HDD or the cable connecting the HDD to the Motherboard has gone bad, or I?m sorry you mentioned its SSD so it brings us down to replacing the SSD itself. The recovery media is not going to work as the Hardware component on which the recovery media would install the operating system itself is not getting detected on the unit.  Please write us back in case you would need any further assistance we would be happy to help. Or if the unit is in warranty call HP Tech Support at 1-800-474-6836, they will guide you further. To check the warranty status here use this link-http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/weInput?cc=us&lc=en.Although I work for HP but I'm speaking for myself. Please click ?Accept as Solution? if you feel my post solved your issue, it will help others find the solution. Your data is the first priority to concern. Please back up all your data from that old HD because it is going to die soon. It is better than you run all kinds of dat recovery tools before it is too late.

Aftet back up, you can try to fix it. But, you still do not have much confident to use it as a normal working HD. In last, replace it with another new HD.

Here's the problem: When I start my computer, I'll get a black screen with a bunch of text with "American Megatrends" as the header. The screen is unusual, and on the bottom it says "CPU fan error!, press F1 to continue." If I simply press f1 and ignore it, my computer eventually shuts off, and restarting my computer doesn't get my display back, I have to reset my cmos.

Things that I've tried: Now, I had this problem before, and my computer doesn't have a cmos switch, so I had to take out the battery for a couple minutes, and that worked.
Today I woke up to have the same problem. Only this time, when I took out the battery and put it back, the problem persisted.
So I tried entering my system setup and set "CPU fan speed" to ignore, that still did nothing.

So I'm aggravated, annoyed and helpless. Any help would be appreciated.

I am receving an error message on one of my older compaqs. I think maybe the hard drive is going out but i wanted a second opinion. It seems about once a day i receive this message.

A:Imminent Failure

This could very well be the case. One way of finding this is that they normally make a horrible cluncking sound (the HDD that is) open up the machine and put the head of the screwdriver on the Hard drive then put the other end near your ear and conpare the noise to a normal HDD. Alternatively this could be a problem with the fan speed as I recently found out.
Hope this helps!!

My wife's laptop is having some issues, I just rebooted it and it said something to the effect that a hard disk failure is imminent and to back up the files right away. Does this mean what I think it means?
