Problem With Autoplay Option !!!

Q: Problem With Autoplay Option !!!

Dear Friends,

I need help with this. Is it possible for me to disable the autoplay option for my usb drives/thumb drives alone?? I need the option of autoplay for my optical drives but i want to disable the same option for my usb drives to avoid viruses..

Thank You.

Preferred Solution: Problem With Autoplay Option !!!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Problem With Autoplay Option !!!

yes when it pops up you should be able to highlight "Take No Action" and check the box that says something like do this always.

I have protable device that won't autoplay when plugged , but it is shown in my computer and it's fully functional , it is not visible in the Autoplay option in the control panel , I tried reinstalling the device , but same thing , I followed Shawn's topic , how to set autoplay for non-volume devices... Didn't work , tried another device , and same thing happend.

When I plug them to my laptop , they autoplay and the device option show in the autoplay , in the control panel.

Other autoplay , removelable drives , CD/DVD working fine .
Any idea ?

It's not important tho , if this help , could it be related to AV software guard ? I have Kaspersky internet security , and Avast internet security , are installed , KS is switched off , ( testing both on deciding my new AV software )
I checked both , nothing seems to do anything with devices control except scanning.

Both systems using Windows 7 x64
Thanks all.

A:Portable devices not listed in Autoplay option . Won't pop autoplay.

Have a look here first -

AutoPlay - Turn On or Off

Have you given the drive a name or is it just seen as a drive letter as that might be the problem otherwise I can point you to a comment I recently made for a solution that worked for me, it is possible that the 'unknown drives' option is blocking autoplay. Have a look at the two key locations with Regedit to see what the values are and then have a look at the list I posted -

Auto play not working

There may not be a key value for NoDriveTypeAutoRun but if you want Autoplay on everything then the following value should work since hardly anyone uses RAM disks these days. Note the comments about exporting the keys to enable returning to a previous state if you do not use Restore.

;Disables Autoplay on RAM disks only

Hope this is of some help.

I recently noticed that when I plug in a USB stick to my PC, a dialogue box appears asking which application I want to use to open files. One of the options, however, reads "using <need provider>". (Please see the attached screenshot picture)

I can only assume that, because I recently cleaned up my PC by uninstalling a number of programs, file types that were associated with the uninstalled programs weren't properly deleted from the registry. Could anybody let me know how to solve this? Thank you.

Previously, my autoplay feature worked whenever inserted a blank CD, listing my choices of action. It no longer works, and when I go to the CD drive on my computer and check the properties, clicking on the AutoPlay tab, it lists:

Music files
Video files
Mixed content
Music CD
DVD Movie
HD Movie

But no blank CD.

I don't know why it disappeared, and any assistance would be greatly appreciated!

The most common cause for this problem is either active malware, or damage caused by removing malware; such as deleting the autorun.inf file. If you're confident that your system is clean, download and run Microsoft's AutoPlay Repair Wizard.

I would like to set Windows Media Center as the default player for DVD movies when I watch them on my HP laptop, which has Windows 7. I have tried to set this program as the default, but when I go to Control Panel, Hardware and Sounds, Auto Play, and then look at the options for DVD Movie, Windows Media Center is not listed as one of the options. The options I have are Windows Media Player and HP DVD Play. The other options are "Open Folder to View Files Using Windows Explorer", "Take no Action", and "Ask me Every Time".

If could give me any guidance on this, I would greatly appreciate it.

Hi I have a concern. Just restored an acronis OS backup. Only two drives connected. Sata one is OS. the E-Sata one is a backup drive.

I can access both drives fine via explore, open or double click.
But on the esata backup drive,, I keep seeing a 3rd option "Open Autoplay...". It also allows me to access the drive.

I tried unchecking the 'use autoplay for all media and devices', but this option still persists.

Is this normal for Vista x64 Business?

- Thanks.

A:Solved: "Open Autoplay..." context option normal in Vista?

That's quite normal for all removable storage devices on all editions of Windows Vista.

"I tried unchecking the 'use autoplay for all media and devices', but this option still persists."

Unchecking the option merely stops the autoplay dialog box from opening automatically, whereas the right-click context-menu for "Open Autoplay" allows you to open the autoplay dialog box manually. It's a matter of personal preference, but the manual option will always be available in the context menu regardless of the settings in the Autoplay options.

I really miss those things.... Thanks for your help.

Firstly, this problem does not seem to resolve by conventional strategy.

I have a Compaq Presario with two optical devices:

1. ASUS CRW-4824AH (CD Read/write)
2. IDE-DVD Rom 16x (CD 40xRd)(DVD SX Rd)

I had a system crash and reinstalled Windows XP, using the Asus CD Rom Drive and everything was so far fine. (IMPORTANT: At this stage "Autoplay" was functioning properly with CDs placed in this drive.)

Now here begins the strange bit!
I had backed up my previous folders and files and now RESTORED them to the new Windows XP installation.

THEN, in order to stabilize the "restore", I performed a Windows XP "Repair".

This worked ok...CD Rom in CD Rom Drive. However, towards the end of this XP Repair, the CD Rom Drive was suddenly not recognized by the repair process and I had to place the Windows XP disc into the DVD DRIVE WHERE IT CONTINUED TO FINISH OFF THE INSTALL!!!!!!

So...now...everything's working fine EXCEPT that there is now NO AUTOPLAY function from the CD Drive, although the drive functions ok in every other way.

I have tried the Windows Tool, Tweak Ui and checked registry settings but nothing I can find will resolve this problem.

Anybody any ideas? This is a tough one...lol!

A:Autoplay Problem,

Hi, and welcome to the forum!

1. From memory, I belive this is is how you fix the double click problem
(In windows explorer) Tools > Folder options > File types tab > select drive from the list > Click advanced > Select open from the list > Click Set as default.

2. For the AutoPlay:
Right click click on the drive > Properties > AutoPlay tab > Click the Always perform this action circle > Scroll down to Take no action > click OK. Do this for each drive.

If you are still having trouble, feel free to ask!

A:Autoplay Pop-up Problem

my children get loads of spyware - so i would suggest

Try not to reboot
Currently the Spyware identified by the security experts and especially the morphing and breeding .exe`s in the new variants of CWS, after every re-boot required by Ad-Aware and Spybot etc, just spawns more and more files for the poster to find and delete. This is making the advice the security experts give just too hard to follow.
One of the security experts recently had one log with over a hundred files, they guy had to format c: drive.

Download and copy hijackthis to its own folder , it makes backups so keeping them separate and available can be useful.

Note the Spyware tools websites are very often under attack and so I have provided more than 1 location to download from:

Close all open windows and open Hijack This. Click “Scan”. When the scan is finished (it only takes a second), the scan button will change to “Save Log”.
Click on “Save Log” and then save it to NotePad.
Click on “Edit” – “Select all” – “copy” and then “paste” into the thread.
DO NOT FIX ANYTHING wait advice from one of the many security experts in this forum.

I currently do not have the skill/competence to advise and poor advice can be far more damaging to your PC with this software, and so I will nolonger be replying to your post, so please have... Read more

Let me get this straight, everytime you pop in a cd it autoplays?

You may have other things going on in your system, please follow these instructions to rule out any malware/spyware.

Download / Install / Update / and Run:
Adaware SE check for any updates before running it.
Get the plug-in for fixing VX2 variants. You can download it at this SITE
To run this tool, install to the hard drive, then open Ad-aware->Add-ons and select VX2 Cleaner. Then click Run Tool and OK to start it. If it's clean, it will say Status System Clean. Otherwise, you will have to click on the Clean button to remove the VX2 infection.

Download and install Spybot S&D . Run Spybot and click on the 'Search for Updates' button. Install any updates that are available. Next click on the 'Check for Problems' button. Let it run the scan. If it finds something, check all those in RED and hit the Fix Selected Problems button. Exit Spybot. If you keep getting the DSO Exploit entries, even after you updated Windows and fixed them, then download the Spybot DSO Exploit Fix and install it over the current Spybot installation.

Scan your pc with one of these free online scanners:

Panda ActiveScan
RAV AntiVirus
Housecall. Be sure to put a check the box beside AutoClean.

The Temp folders should be cleaned out periodically as installation programs and hijack programs leave a lot of junk there. Download CleanUp!... Read more

I have a Vista Business machine which is not auto-playing DVDs correctly. I have installed VLC and am trying to get Vista to use it to auto play DVDs but it always opens Windows Media Player instead. I have set VLC as the default player for DVDs in the AutoPlay part of Control Panel. I have also ticked the 'Always use this program' box when the auto-play dialog appears but it still defaults to media player.

I can play the DVD using VLC if I right-click the drive in explorer and choose 'Play using VLC' but if I double click the drive or right-click and choose 'Play', it uses media player instead.

I've tried disabling and re-enabling Autoplay but it makes no difference. I've also tried resetting to defaults then picking VLC again but still no difference. I've tried the registry hack here: The VideoLAN Forums • View topic - Add VLC Player to autoplay menu on vista 64 bit? but to no avail.

Any suggestions much appreciated!

Hello, Try changing the defaults for programs, In your VLC Media Player, change the file association to the specific file, or check it for all file types if you want VLC as our default media player.

Go to system defaults, and see if VLC Media Player is listed in there, and set it for the default media player.

I hope this helps you, Good luck

I have three external hard drives and one external disk drive. Every time my computer starts up when I turn it on, two of the external hard drives autostart as does the external disk drive (if there's a disk in it).

This has only started happening today and has never happened in the past. I recently bought a new computer as my last one blew a fuse (literally) but I haven't made any drastic changes to it (that I know of).

I realise that autostart settings can be changed and all that, which I've tried, but it's still occuring. The problem seems to be that autostart is set to open when I insert a memory chip into a reader slot - it reads mixed content - but the "mixed content" setting for some reason now includes the mixed content on my external hard drives. It's reading both.

Like I say, this hasn't happened before. It's just started happening for some unknown reason.

If anyone knows what's going on and how to stop my hard drives from firing up on every start up that would be helpful.

A:AutoPlay problem...

Doctor, I understand you boot into your internal hard drive normally then it starts reading the external ones (when you say autorun, is it executing any program or just scanning the HDs?)?

If that is the case, can you post a picture of your disk management screen (right click on Computer, Manage then Disk Management)

When you say the only thing that changed is your hardware, that would mean you have a different BIOS. Can you let us know more info on your machine ("My system specs" on the lower left corner), it might help.

Hi all,

A problem with autoplay popped up yesterday. When I plug in a digital still camera, autoplay appears to be completely broken. None of the apps assigned to the device in the autoplay settings will start when the device is plugged in. I've tried disabling/re-enabling autoplay, checking the group policy settings, and making sure the autoplay flags are set correctly in the registry, but nothing seems to solve the problem. I've tried this with three cameras - a Canon EOS 5D MkII, a Canon EOS 30D and a Canon PowerShot SD1100IS. None will call their respective applications when they are plugged in.

Other USB devices, like USB keys, my Flip camera and my external HDD work just fine -- I plug them in, and the autoplay prompt (or associated application) pops up normally.

The only software apps I've installed recently are Photoshop CS5 and Pinnacle Studio 14. I've uninstalled both to see if the problem goes away, but it remains.

I can't pinpoint exactly when the problem started, as it has been a couple weeks since I downloaded photos from my camera, but it was working fine before. It's not a huge deal, but I would like to figure out how to fix this problem if anyone has any ideas. Thanks in advance.

The last time I used the drive was 2 days ago to install the MS Office 2003 program and it was working fine then.

I've got an interesting problem. It's on my Dell P4 PC with Windows XP Home (with SP2) and a Toshiba CD/DVDW SD-R5372 DVD drive. Until recently, everything was working fine, but the following problem just started yesterday:

When I insert a video DVD (commercial or home-made), Windows starts up a copy of the Windows Explorer showing the contents of my "C:\Documents and Settings\myuserid" directory. It does not start up my default DVD media player, which is Windows Media Player (WMPLAYER.EXE).

I have gone through the process of clicking on "My Computer", right clicking on the DVD drive, selecting Properties, then selecting the Autoplay tab, selecting "DVD Movie" and setting the Action to "Play DVD movie using Windows Media Player". But still, when I insert a DVD, I get Windows Explorer showing me a copy of my "C:\Documents and Settings\myuserid" directory.

I can manually start WMPLAYER and play the DVD that way, so this isn't a case where I can not play a DVD at all. And the Autoplay function works correctly for Audio CDs.

But I still would like to know why the Autoplay function is mis-behaving when I insert a video DVD.

Any ideas/suggestions?

Your system is losing the connection with the external drive, for however brief a period of time and being redetected. Anything coming or going to the hard drive will freeze/fail but then pick up just fine a moment later.

Why? Not sure, could be a little fluctuation in the voltage, something interfering for a brief moment, hard to tell. Try moving the drive to a different port and maybe it'll be more stable.

I have a program that syncs files from your computer to your flash drive and vice versa. I would like for it to automatically start when I plug in my flash drive. But it's not on my AutoPlay list, so I decided to add it. First, I tried using a program called AutoPlay Repair. This allowed me to add the syncing program into AutoPlay, but for some reason it worked on every object type (Audio files, video files, blank CD, etc.) BUT mixed content, which is what my flash drive is. Next, I tried this suggestion to change the registry, but it didn't work, which is probably because it's suggested for XP. Finally, I tried another program, Default Programs Editor, and this once again only added the syncing program to the menus for everything BUT mixed content. Does anyone know why Windows doesn't let you change the AutoPlay programs for mixed content? Or does anyone know how to get the setting I want?

Oh... Wow. Way to go, Windows... Like I'd REALLY be worried about viruses. One of the downsides to 7... :/ This topic can be closed now.

I have an R51 IBM Think Pad and use XP Pro SP2, SpyBot, Avast AntiVirus scanner and MS Windows defender and have no viruses.
I have recently purchased a Kingston 4GB Data Traveler. It is formatted as FAT32 and is working except for AutoPlay/AutoRun. I have Read the Tech Support Guy forum and found http://portableapps.com/node/5449 “Autorun.inf does not work”.
I went ahead and made a Autorun.Bat file, Autorun.inf file and an the Freshclam.conf, they are as follows.

Autorun.bat file is as follows: is placed in the “E” Flash Drive root directory -

Just today on starting my Win 7 64 Pro that a small screen flashed quickly on and off and kept appearing, the warning was "Autoplay System Reserved (G: )everything was fine at shutdown the night before. G: drive is a flash drive and only connected when needed.

I checked error logs and could only find two errors around the startup time, TfFsMon and TfFvsMon whether these are relevant or not I have no idea!

I rebooted with the same problem. I then unticked 'Use Autoplay for all media devices' in Control Panel~Autoplay. Rebooted and all seems fine again.

I then tried a System Restore of a few days ago and this failed possibly due to my AV running, I turned the AV off until a 'Restart' and again tried a System Restore, same failure with unspecified error (0x80070005).

If I turn on Autoplay the problem re-appears, my PC slows and generally is not happy, turn off Autoplay and its fine.

Any suggestions as to what the problem is and how to fix it?

Many thanks

A:Problem: Autoplay System Reserved (G:) error appearing.

I am having this same issue! It only started recently (within the past month).

I first noticed it when I came back to my computer after having been away for a day or two and there were literally HUNDREDS of pop up windows open for the Autoplay option. They had a message about "System Drive F" trying to open itself.

I closed them all, but for the next hour or so they continued to flicker on and off my screen as the system continued to try and autoplay something (I unplugged all peripherals, which didn't help at all)

Most recently I started noticing the Autoplay windows/error directly after I plugged my iPod into my system. I had ejected the device to leave, and noticed the windows start to pop up again. This time they had the same message as yours: "System Reserved G:" with an option to open the folder and view files.

I have no clue why my system is doing this but was happy to see someone else having the exact same problem.

I have this flash drive
USB Flash Memory - Smart Design Flash USB Drive by SanDisk
U3 is built within it. As i put it in win7 i dont have the AUTOPLAY menu , but I can through the browser locate the two components of the drive under My Computer:

I think I read somewhere win 7 Such is restricted to built-DOK with U3 security because ...?

-I've No problem at all with AUTOPLAY in win 7 with all others DOK or disk insertion.

-I've No problem with the "problematic" DOK on VISTA / XP -AUTOPLAY menus opened immediately.

The problem is known?

How can we overcome it in WIN7?

A:SanDisk Cruzer Flash Drive-AUTOPLAY problem

I'm a little confused.

Not your fault, just my slow grasping of problems.

Could you do me a favor and

post a snip of the output of:
WIN E key combo
WIN is the key with the wavy flag.

Make a snapshot:
Click the New button.
Drag the cursor around the area you want to snip.
File | Save as | select save location and name | Save button

Post the snapshot:

The systems CF (compact flash) is trying to autoplay when no card is in the slot. The only way it can be stopped is to use 'Safely remove hardware', thus stopping all other usb devices (2 other memory cards built in)

I have a checkbox that when checked it makes an Option Group visible. When the Option Group opens (I've tried both check boxes and Option Buttons) but they both have NO checked off when the Option Group opens. I have tried playing with the default for the Option Group Frame. I have tried setting it up to reset to null when the Option Group opens.

From everything that i am reading there is only a yes or no option, there is no null option. How do I make neither button or checkmark checked? I want both boxes or circles left blank until chosen.

A:Access -Checkbox to make an Option Group visible (need no option checked)
