Q: Thinkpad X1 Extreme not working with Thunderbolt 3 dock

I have a Thinkpad X1 Extreme Gen 1.I love my laptop, its has enough grunt for kids to even play games. I wanted to setup this with docking station. So called up Lenovo asking which docking would be compatible with this. They advised to get 40AN0170AU. Got my dock yesterday and plugged it in.did all the firmware updated BIOS security Level 0 for thunderbolt as advised in User Guide. All seems to be working except two issues. Can't start the Laptop with button on the dock and external monitor not getting recognised. The monitor works fine when I plug it directly to the Laptop but doesn't work via the Dock

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Hi, I am considering to use this dock with X1 Extreme 4K. 1. What is the length of the cable that connects the laptop to the dock?2. Does the dock support rapid charge (80% charge in an hour) of the X1E?3. Is it fully compatible with Linux?

I have an X1 Extreme plugged into a Thunderbolt 3 Dock (40AN0230US).  Whenever the screen locks it cuts off audio.  I like this. Prevents sound coming from a computer that is locked.  However, when I unlock the computer, the only way to get the sound back it to restart the whole system.  This I don't like.I have 2 monitors (ThinkVision P27H's) plugged  in using Display Port and the audio is playing from one of the monitors.  The monitors are listed in the audio panel, but neither will provide any sound on unlock.  If I change the volume it lags terribly and eventually freezes.  I can switch to internal audio.I have:1) Reinstalled audio and display drivers on the computer.2) Reinstalled thunderbolt drivers on the computer3) Updated the dock's firmwareBut the problem persists.  Any ideas of what to try next besides getting a replacement?  Every item - even the cables - in the chain are supplied by Lenovo.  Should work flawlessly in my estimation.

Tried to plug in a monitor into the TB3 port, also didn't work. Hi everyone, I have a Thinkpad p52s hooked up to a newly bought ThinkPad Thunderbolt 3 Dock Gen 2 135W (40AN0135US). I recently also purched a second external monitor, and want to operate them through the dock now (with laptop closed)Both monitors are Dell U2518D, and they have a resolution of 2560 x 1440. However, the moment I plug in both monitors, one will only be available at a resolution of 1920 x 1080. What I've tried so far:updated Windows 10updated all p52s driversswitched cables from HDMI to mDPtried all four monitor plugs in the docktried another U2518D monitor (we have more at the office)My laptop screen is only HD so I can't compare it, but when I open the lid I simply have one more HD screen To no avail. One of the screens will always go back to a generic HD display with 30Hz. I'm no expert but I was convinced this shouldn't be a problem with the laptop and the dock? I have the Intel UHD Graphics 620 driver version 26.20.100.6951 installed. I don't know why nVidia does not have any settings about the monitors but again, I'm no expert, and I didn't find anyone else having the same problem. I attached screenshot to show how this monitor is being displayed.

New X1 Extreme Gen 2 and new TB 3 Gen 2 Dock... and am having continual problems with various devices dropping out when connected to the dock.  One of three screens would not wake up after sleep, random wired ethernet connection drops out flipping me to wireless, random USB devices drop out, etc. This thread highlights a critical software and firmware update that would seem to correct the same type of issue I am seeing - except that there isn't a software and driver listed for the X1 Extreme in either Gen 1 or Gen 2!  I use this setup for my business and it is obviously imperative that it works.  I've had this for only a couple of weeks and updated to the latest TB3 Gen 2 driver (V10015) but it hasn't seemed to make a difference. Rebooting used to work but lately stuff drops out regularly and really handcuffs my ability to do much at all when connected to the dock.  Of note is that all of this only happens when connected to the dock.  Any and all help would be huge!

Hello everyone, I recently bought a Thinkpad X1 Extreme and I am now locking for a suitable Thunderbolt 3 dock. Although I've read a lot of posts about various docks I am still a little consfused about which one to choose. It seems like the following ones would all work with the X1 Extreme:1. Lenovo ThinkPad Thunderbolt 3 Dock Gen 2 135W:https://www.lenovo.com/ca/en/accessories-and-monitors/docking/universal-cable-docks-thunderbolt/Thun...2. ThinkPad Thunderbolt 3 Workstation Dock (170W):https://www.lenovo.com/ca/en/accessories-and-monitors/docking/universal-cable-docks-thunderbolt/Thun...3. ThinkPad Thunderbolt 3 Workstation Dock (230W):https://www.lenovo.com/ca/en/accessories-and-monitors/top-tech/Thunderbolt-WS-230W-dock-US/p/40AN023... Please correct me if I am wrong but to me it seems as if the only difference between these docks is that the workstation ones come with two AC adapters each and a special Thunderbolt/Power cable to avoid using two different cables. Or are there any other technical differences? So if I am okay with a two cable solution couldn't I just use the Lenovo ThinkPad Thunderbolt 3 Dock Gen 2 135W and connect it via Thunderbolt while at the same time use my 135W AC adapter to charge the laptop? Thanks a lot in advance.

I've been experiencing general stability issues with the ThunderBolt 3 dock. I purchased Extreme X1 for work because of the impressive specs and portability of the device. Overall I've been very pleased with the performance and build quality of the device and Lenovo's software suite makes keeping everything up to date really easy. WIth that said, I've had LOTS of issues with general stability of this product. It appears to Lenovo had issues with the discrete graphics (Nvidia Geforce GTX 1050 ti) which may have mostly been resolved with the latest update. I'm on a fairly recent version of Windows 10 (1803). When using the Thunderbolt 3 dock I still experience lots of issues where the device freezes or becomes unresponsive when docking or undocking. Often times I must force power off the device completely because the device is unable to wake from sleep correctly when docked. I have not tested whether device itself is unable to wake from sleep or if it's just because it is connected from the Dock. However sometimes the device WILL wake correctly but then certain functions will not work, notable USB data will not work often but will be powered (keyboard lights are on but can't use caps lock, for example). Or sometimes the VIDEO won't display at all (thunder bolt graphics issue with discrete GPU) however I can clearly see caps lock works on my keyboard. Note all mentions of keyboard here refer to a USB keyboard wired to the TB dock.  Also worth noting ofte... Read more

I have a Startech TB3DKM2DP dock and have had intermittent BSOD's when using an external monitor with the laptop closed.Obsrevations:If I configure the screen to turn off, often I can't make the external display come back onSometimes in the past powering the external monitor on and off causes the laptop to beep when it recognizes a reconnectPowering the monitor on and off no longer causes the beep.Powering the computer down causes the red light on the laptop to blink a number of times at the end of a power down cycleAfter a while the computer will lock up and either BSOD or freeze requiring a hard reset. After doing this a number of times, the computer will not start back upWhat I found worksRemoving a hard drive before shipping for repair caused the laptop that wouldn't start up to show configuration change after the second hard drive was removed and then start upBy setting the screen turn off to never, leaving the laptop open and duplicating the screen, I've stopped having BSOD or computer lockup for a couple of weeksSeems like a driver compatability problem with the dock causing the bios to corrupt. I've return the laptop for repair once, changed out the memory once and was ready to send it back again before I discovered how to keep it working. How can we make this problem go away?

I have acquired a Thunderbolt 3 dock with 100 Watts power delivery to connect to my X1 Extreme. I then ran a CPU benchmark to see how the notebook would handle the somewhat lower power supply compared to the standard 135 Watts power brick. To my disappointment I noticed that the CPU frequency stayed very far below specifications during the benchmark. Now I'm wondering why this is the case, since 100 Watts should have been enough to power a simple CPU benchmark without throttling, since GPU load was minimal. How exactly does the notebook behave if it is provided with less than the recommended power? Is it specified somewhere?

Does the Thinkpad P51s support the Thinkpad Thunderbolt 3 Dock? I have the Thinkpad P51s with stock Windows 10 Pro and updated to latest drivers and Windows version and installed the latest Thinkpad Thunderbolt 3 Dock drivers. Attaching the Thunderbolt 3 Dock to the P51s as described in documentation, it charges the notebook, however, noting attached to the dock is recognized. I've tested with attaching USB flash drives, headphones, Ethernet, HDMI, and DP, but nothing is recognized nor are any warnings/errors displayed in Windows. While the Thinkpad Thunderbolt 3 Dock is listed as being compatible with the P51s and T570, the notebook order page does not list the Thunderbolt 3 Dock in any of the accessories lists. Lenovo Sales also confirmed that the Thunderbolt 3 Dock is fully compatible with the P51s.  However, I needed to purchase the Thunderbolt 3 Dock separately from the notebook order. What's going on? Has anybody successfully used the P51s or the T570 with the Thinkpad Thunderbolt 3 Dock? Or is this something I need to wait for full support via a future BIOS/driver update? Or perhaps my Thunderbolt 3 Dock is defective? Thanks,Boris

See subject.  Ever since the BIOS upgrade, the dock no longer crashes.  Two days running now with no problems; prior to the upgrade it would crash routinely when connecting via USB-C.  I had to employ the unsavoury workaround of connecting the laptop to a charger and connecting it to the dock via the USB-A port using the USB-A to USB-C adaptor supplied.  Now I'm connecting via USB-C cable only. In fact, I'd given up on using the dock at all and had it just sitting there.  I decided to give it another go after reading that BIOS v1.19 fixed instances of BSODs occuring when connected to an external monitor (which I did experience now and again when connecting to an external monitor via HDMI i.e. not via dock).    Dock Type : 40AFX1E Type : 20MF

Whenever I put the laptop to sleep and I then resume it later on, all app/windows I left open are automatically resized, moved and stacked up on the primary (laptop) display. Is this by design? Anyway to prevent this behaviour?I noticed that the laptop display is handled by the Intel graphic card while the two external displays are handled by the nVidia graphic card. Hi there, I have a brand new Thinkpad X1 Extreme.I heard of a problem regarding some new generation Thinkpads with a BIOS option called "BIOS support for Thunderbolt", which is needed for a proper running Linux installation. On Notebooks like the P52 or some Yogas enabling this option effectively *bricks* the device.See: https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-P-and-W-Series-Mobile/Lenovo-P52-bricked-by-selecting-BIOS-thu... Can anyone of you confirm that this behaviour appears with the X1 Extreme as well? Or does it not? Has anyone tried it yet? Dear Lenovo Admins/Techs: could any one of you try this setting out with one fresh device? I want to install Linux on a second SSD (Linux Mint 19), I managed to get into GRUB loader via USB, but on startup the machine hangs completely, showing a "kernel panic" with some log lines regarding "thunderbolt", so I presume, I NEED to enable "BIOS support for Thunderbolt". Anyway, simply knowing that there *may* be a BIOS setting, that effectively *destroys* me notebook makes me completely uncomfortable.  Could you please confirm, the setting is safe OR tell me, that it is NOT safe AND you are working on a solution? Thanks in advanceB.

We have standardized our deployments to ThinkPad X1 Yogas, and in many case including this one, they are the second generation model. Because of the performance, we use the Thunderbolt 3 Dock, purchased directly through Lenovo. This setup is not unfamilar to use as we have deployed over 40 workstations in the same configuration. This morning, our team received a call stating that an end-users monitors weren't working. Upon reviewing, we found that the dock wasn't being recognized by the laptop, although the connection was there because it was charging the laptop. We went through the normal "rinse and repeat" steps of ensuring that the thunderbolt cable was connected to the correct ports on both the dock and the laptop, removing the connection, removing the power, rebooting the computer, reintroducing the dock, etc., but to no avail. We remove the dock from known devices hoping that it would spark it to recognize a new device, but it didn't. We removed the Thunderbolt Software completely, reinstalling it, and then reconnecting the device, and still, nothing. Our devices are set to automatically install critical and security updates both through Lenovo Vantage and Windows Updates, but, the only change made between the time it was working and the time it stopped working wasn't relative to the dock. To be sure, we rolled back the updates, then rolled back farther, but it still didn't resolve the issue. We then followed through with installing all Windows and Lenovo updates: ... Read more

Dear community, I am running a Thunderbolt 3 Workstation Dock with my P72 and I am having a hard time to get some of my realtime USB devices to run properly: (1) 1080p Webcams: I tested 2 devices (Logitech C930e and Microsoft LifeCam Studio) and both provide an unstable video stream, which is regularly interrupted by distortions. A lower 720p stream with another device (Logitech C270) works fine, though. (2) Oculus Rift Headset and Oculus Sensor: Does not run at all or with bad tracking performance. Those devices require a stable USB 3.0 connection to function properly. All of those devices run perfectly when connected to my Thinkpad P72 diretly. So chances are, that the Dock is causing the problems, I have the Dock's latest drivers (v10011) and firmware (04-0E-83_Rev_0083) installed. Does the Thunderbolt 3 Workstation Dock actually support fast USB connections (such as high definition Webcams)? Or is it rather likely that my Dock and/or the Thunderbolt cable are damaged?  I have been working on this issue for many hours now. So any advice is greatly appreciated. Cheers, Robert

I have a bug that is fairly repeatable where when my laptop goes to sleep, the USB ports on the Thunderbolt 3 dock are not active when I wake the computer up. I can unplug the TB3 cable and plug it back in to regain access to the ports. Where can I report this issue?

Hey Everyone, I'm having an issue where my dock is somehow affecting my monitor's ability to display at its native resolution. My monitor 1 is "dumbed" down to display at 1920 x 1080 and it refuses to let it display at its native resolution.Do I need a different dock? Thanks,Condor90 Current specs: Laptop: T480 20L5Version: 10.0.017134Thinkpad Thunderbolt 3 Gen 2Firmware: V10011Monitor 1: LG Ultra HDResolution: 3840 x 2160Monitor 2: LG FULL HDResolution: 1920 x 1080Monitor 3: T480 screenResolution 1920 x 1080

Just got myself a second thinkpad, a X380 as the HDMI port wont support a widescreen from LG, i bought myself a Thunderbolt 3 dock. But I can't get the dockingstation to work. Is this because it's not comptable according to lenovo? The Thunderbolt controller is also not aways found, i have to manualy use the driver file which is able to detect the driver which is provided with the driver from intel. Ones opened, the thunderbolt controller is visible in the thunderbolt software. But no connection with the dockingstation. Is this because it's not comptable according to lenovo?
