ThinkPad X1 Extreme memory upgrade

Q: ThinkPad X1 Extreme memory upgrade

I am looking for memory upgrade options from 1x8GBSearching internet returns Crucial website for compatible sodimm Option 1: get 1x 16GB = total 24GBOption 2: get 2x 16GB = total 32GB Q1: I read some where that it is important to have two identical RAM. Perhaps I would go for option 2. Any suggestion Q2: For option 2, there are 2400 [CT2K16G4SFD824A] or 2666 [CT2K16G4SFD8266] version. The X1 unit came with 2666 8GB RAM, is it better to go for 2666 version, even through it is written in manual that the max support speed is 2400? Q3: Please share your choices for X1 extreme memory upgrade?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello, I have a new x1 extreme gen 2 Part No: 20MFCTO1WW with 16 GB DDR4 2666MHz. I would like to go to 32 or 64 GB if I can.  Could anybody suggest what memory I should buy and where? Thanks in advance, Ricky

A:ThinkPad X1 Extreme memory upgrade?

You can have up to 64GB (2 X 32GB).  The part numbers for the 32GB SODIMMs are 01AG871 or 01AG861.  Other configurations are possible depending on thether you have 2 X 8GB or 1 X 16GB and what you want to end up with,

Good day.

Please see page 51 of the HMM: https://download.lenovo.com/pccbbs/mobiles_pdf/x1p1_x1_extreme_hmm_en.pdf

Memory modules and SSDs are listed as CRUs. Looks like only the bottom cover needs to be removed to access them.

Hope this helps a bit.

Hi everyone, I've just add a RAM module (ballistix sport lt bls16g4s26bfsd) to my X1 Extreme laptop and I have a 'problem' with the frequency of the RAM.Its a 2666 Mhz capable RAM module but it shows as a 2400 Mhz in the task manager.I've read that I have to use xmp profile in the Bios to set the frequency of the RAM module but I can't see option for that in the Bios..Any idea on how to set the frequency of the RAMat 2666 Mhz ? Many Thanks Narek

Hi! I was wondering if I could get some help with a RAM upgrade question for my new thinkpad. I'm currently running on just a 8gb single channel config that shipped with the laptop (2666mhz cl19). If I add a Corsair Vengeance 2666mhz CL18 would the speeds still match up and work well (without crashing or going down to a lower speed)? Just to see what would happen I added the stick from my old acer laptop into the thinkpad, which was also running 8gb x 1 . Now my the thinkpad registers 16gb of ram in dual-channel, but at 2133mhz. The original stick in the thinkpad is at 2666 cl19 as before and the one from my old laptop is running at 2133 cl15, if I'm reading the cpu-z stats right. Should I ditch the old stick in favor of a new corsair? Do both sticks have to be exactly identical to work well with each other? How big of a performance boost is there between running dual-channel ram at 2133mhz vs 2666mhz? Enough of a boost to warrant the extra $40? I'm pretty new to this and I'd like to be able to save money wherever possible. Any hope would be appreciated. I'm gonna attach a few screenshots from cpu-z in hopes that it would help you all help me out. Thanks!

the X1E i ordered had one primary NVMe M.2 drive and I went and purchased another M.2 NVMe drive from another vendor upon receiving my machine and trying to install the additional drive, I discovered that the SSD would not lay flat seemingly because it's a double-sided SSD.   I have not seen anywhere that says the X1E must utillize a single-sided SSD and the user guide provides no clarification.  i have contacted lenovo via chat and also technical support via telephone and they've been of no help.   when it says M.2 form factor you would assume that any M.2 drive would work but apparently it does not.  if I have to return the drive I'll be out $60 for shipping and restocking fee.   am I missing something here?   i'd be very disappointed if I have to return the drive and get dinged $60.  If indeed it only takes single-sided drives, how would an average user/customer know that?

hello, I hope this is the right place to ask some Q about the IBM thinkpad G40 .. My son bought a second hand G40 some years back. It had/has only 256M memory. Now I want to upgrade the memory and I scanned the relevant web pages of Lenovo. Apparently the memory should be PC2100 or maybe PC2700 becasue of PC2100 availability ? (DDR)Now a cpu-z run on that laptop says the memory is PC2300 (142Mhz) so what gives ? Has this been put in to be on the safe side or ?and an additional Q .. can memory modules be mixed ? ie can I add a 512M PC2100 sodimm to get 768M ? or do I need to remove the original 256M and go for 2x 512M ?TIAImbsysop

A:Thinkpad G40 memory upgrade

Welcome to the forum! Your machine can run PC2100/2700 memory, and you can combine it, it will always run at PC2100 speed regardless of anything else. It can be mixed, no questions asked. If the G40 is Celeron powered, it will take up to 1Gb (2x512Mb) of RAM. If it's Pentium 4-powered, you can install up to 2Gb of RAM. Hope this helps.

Currently I am trying to upgrade memory modules on my ThinkPad P51 of type 20HH. It was planned to have maximum, i.e. 64 GB, instead of original 8 GB. After some research four of Crucial 16 GB DDR4-2400 SODIMM CT16G4SFD824A have been obtained. With absolutely no problems two of them have been inserted in slots under the bottom cover. On that stage the laptop starts up and works perfectly with total 40 GB of RAM consisted of new 32 GB and original 8 GB. However, after adding a new memory module under the keyboard and/or replacing original 8 GB memory module with new 16 GB, and/or even putting original 8 GB memory module in the neighbouring slot, the laptop doesn't start up. Several attempts have been done to solve this problem, i.e. BIOS has been updated to 1.47 version, CMOS battery has been removed and returned back to its place, SSD drive has been removed and returned back to its place, the laptop has been turned on with a battery only, with AC power adapter only and with both of them. Nothing of the listed above helped to solve a problem. Did someone face the same problem? Is there a solution for it?

Howdy All! I just ordered a Thinkpad P70 with a XEON 1505-M processor. It comes with one 16gb ECC memory module. I want to add 3 more and when I checked Crucial.com's memory upgrade options, it only list 1x16GB NON-ECC memory modules! So two questions: 1) Can I mix the 1x16GB ECC memory module with 3 NON-ECC 1x16 modules? 2) How hard is it to install memory in the P70? My last couple of mobile workstations have been Dell M Precisions and adding memory was EASY (no need to remove the keyboard ,etc)! Thanks in advance! Aggie85

Since non-ECC modules are only slightly cheaper I would not recommend it. About 2: for the P50 it is a piece of cake to install memory, it should be no different on the P70.  As for memory: Lenovo currently uses Samsung modules. So if you want to go for the same 16GB ECC modules check for M474A2K43BB1-CPB. I do not know about Cruicial, but at least Transcend also got 16GB ECC modules (check for TS2GSH72V1B). I cannot say anything about the Transcend modules, but I installed two of the 16GB Samsung modules (besides the 8GB module that was already in) in my P50 had no problem so far (even checked with Memtest86+ for a whole night). Cubbi

See subject.  Ever since the BIOS upgrade, the dock no longer crashes.  Two days running now with no problems; prior to the upgrade it would crash routinely when connecting via USB-C.  I had to employ the unsavoury workaround of connecting the laptop to a charger and connecting it to the dock via the USB-A port using the USB-A to USB-C adaptor supplied.  Now I'm connecting via USB-C cable only. In fact, I'd given up on using the dock at all and had it just sitting there.  I decided to give it another go after reading that BIOS v1.19 fixed instances of BSODs occuring when connected to an external monitor (which I did experience now and again when connecting to an external monitor via HDMI i.e. not via dock).    Dock Type : 40AFX1E Type : 20MF

The current configuration of my system (as bought) is 4Gb RAM.  According to the specifictions, it is upgradable to 8Gb.  I had a conversation with Sales Support via Chat trying to find the correct part number for 8Gb memory to replace the 4Gb.  I was told that as my system is still under warranty, I would need to contact Technical Support for this to happen.  Having done a number of searches on this forum, would I be right in suspecting that the existing 4Gb is soldered in to place - hence the need for a Warranty call to upgrade.  I was advised that any attempt to make the change myself would void the warranty.Any thoughts please.

I know that the L520 allows a maximum memory of 8 GB. Do I have to use each slot to get maximun memory (4 + 4) or can I install a single 8 GB stick into a single slot and leave the other empty? If I can use the 8 + 0 method, does it make any difference as to which slot I install the stick? Additionally, does it make any difference in speed if I use the PC3-10600 memory or PC-12800 memory? i7 - 2620M processor

A:ThinkPad L520 RAM Memory Upgrade / Installation

I'm of the opinion a L520 will support 16GB, at least my T520 and both X220 I have do so. And they're the same generation as yours

Generally speaking it's better to have two sticks for dual channel, 2x 4GB should be better than 1x 8GB. Although the difference may not be so noticeable in normal daily usage.

Hi This is my first post to the forum. Regrettably I must start with a problem. Following suggestions on this forum I decided to upgrade RAM in my X200 to 8 GB. I bought 2 4GB chips branded by G.Skill http://www.gskill.com/en/product/f3-1600c11d-8gsl I was very disappointed to find the memory doesn't work. The machine won't start (black screen) with several pipping sounds.I suppose they mean DIMM problem. When I replaced the original memory chips everything is normal. Is this at all impossible and I should go for another memory ?Could possibly BIOS upgrade help ? I'd be very grateful for any comments and suggestions. Cheers,Chris

A:Thinkpad X200 memory upgrade failure

Welcome to the forum!

Unfortunately X200's are very picky with DDR3-12800 (DDR3-1600) like the ones you bought.

I would advice to buy DDR3-10600 (DDR3-1333) or DDR3-8500 (DDR3-1066) RAM. I would also recommend you to avoid the "Value RAM" line from Kingston, the "Value Select" line from Corsair (other lines from those brands are ok) and any no-name brand from eBay and similar shops.

No,  It won't work and the problem isn't the BIOS or a Lenovo limitation.  You have a 4th gen CPU  i7-4500u.  The 16GB modules only work on 5th gen or later

From the parts list of the Maintenance Manual - your computer will only accept 4gb modules.  If you only have one socket on the motherboard, you are limited to a single 4gb stick.  Usually the system has the option for two memory modules, so I would suggest contacting Lenovo support by phone to discuss this situation.

I recently purchased a Yoga 11e 20d9 model and so far I'm loving it.  However, I wanted to upgrade the memory from 4gb to 8gb.  I purchased Crucial 8GB Single DDR3 1600 MT/s (PC3-12800) as all the reviews I read said this was okay to use, however, everytime I install the memory and I try to charge the laptop at the same time it crashes.  I can run windows 10 perfectly without issue up until I try to charge it.  I can charge ther laptop when the laptop is off but for the life of me I can't get it to coexist.  I installed the original ram and everything works perfectly.   Even if I'm in bios, as soon as I plug in the charger the laptop will crash.  It literally has rips on the screen and everything fades out.  As soon as I unplug it, the laptop works flawlessly.   I returned the memory and got a replacement and it does the same exact thing.  I updated both the BIOS and battery firmware.  I am out of ideas.  Any help would be appreciated.

The ThinkPad T400 and T500 datasheet states that it can handle up to 8GB of RAM, so it should work unless you are running a 32-bit version of Windows, in which case the maximum RAM that can be addressed by the OS is 4GB regardless of how much RAM you install.       The Windows license key is valid for both 32 and 64-bit, but to go from 32-bit to 64-bit, you would have to uninstall and reinstall Windows. Windows Install Media Download Links,https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows7https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows8https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10 Hope that helps,

If so, upgrade to 10GB or 12GB RAM would be posible instead? Also I want to increase the capacity in my laptop (by default is 320 GB.HDD), and I want to put a 500 GB SSD Disc, and if is possible to maintain both the Hard Disc anda SSD Disc, it would be possible to put SSD Disc into the PCI Express slot and mantain the Hard Disc at the same time. Or the only possibility is to replace the Hard Disc for a SSD Disc?Thank you very much,Regards.

Hey Lenovo Enthusiasts! I am about to purchase the Lenovo Thinkpad 550s, and I am tempted to purchase the baseline memory (4GB) and storage (512GB) HDD.  I want to make sure that I can indeed upgrade the memory to 16GB of RAM and the storage to a 256 (or 512) GB SSD. In my research earlier on, I noticed that somebody had posted a link to the parts list:https://download.lenovo.com/parts/ThinkPad/w550s_frubom_20150130.pdf I don't know what half of this technical jargon is, but from what I gather, I have found an SSD made by Samsung on Amazon, and an 8GB memory made by Data Memory Systems that seem to abide. SSD:http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-256GB-2-5-Inch-Internal-MZ-7KE256BW/dp/B00LMXBOP4 Memory:http://www.datamemorysystems.com/parts/lenovo/03X6657/ Questions:1) Could somebody wiser than me please verify that these products will work for the w550s? A:Lenovo Thinkpad W550s Memory upgrade to 16GB and S...

Very disappointing. Yes, I have the same problem (son, since it is your problem!). I note that over 189 people have at least looked at this question you asked before we decided to have you purchase the W550S...and after calling tech support one last time after my son purchased the machine (and was told there should be no issue)-we see BSOD multiple times within an hour.  They happen so quickly that it is hard to even note what the error message is.... I replaced his 512 HD with Samsung SSD 512GB drive. I used a disk duplicator-everything seemed to go great. Then I put in 16GB of RAM-again, everything seemed great. However, the notebook is only now being used frequently as my son is starting school now-and as said above, the BSOD is making me think this has something to do with the SSD or RAM replacement. Yes, obviously, it's fairly easy to replace with the original parts and see if the problem goes away-but he wanted the SSD and more RAM, so even if that fixes the issue-we will likely get rid of the notebook. BUT:  here is what disappoints me:  absolutely no comment on my son's original questions. I'm guessing I won't get input from Lenovo either....will try to call tomorrow, but we are almost beyond the point where we need to return the SSD/RAM and notebook if we want our money back. A little guidance from Lenovo would be appreicated before we need to make a decision.. Thanks,Steve

Hi,

I am helping my parents troubleshoot their computers.  My feeling is that they are both infected with the same virus/trojan but I can find it or figure out what is going on.

The each have identical laptops and both are experience identical problems.  Both are running Avast! and both systems are not turning up any discovered viruses or trojans during scans.  I am on the verge of completely refronting both of their laptops and am really hoping I can avoid having to do that.  I suspected that maybe they were both infected with "poweliks" but the below FRST shows (at least I think so) that neither are infected with that trojan.  I am now thinking its a memory leak on some recent driver/app update - but either trojan or memory leak, I am not finding it.

Symptoms:
After a clean reboot, within 24 to 48 hours both systems begin to get very sluggish, both audio and video starts to skip and lag, both mice bounce around like crazy when trying to move the pointer.  After about 72 hours the laptops simply freeze to the point that they have to pull the batteries to get them to shut off.

This laptop just came in yesterday. Initially even after installing all the updates, the computer was running rather sluggish and slow compared to my previous 2 year old Asus Laptop, in terms of scrolling through webpages, pdf and responsiveness. Now I've reinstalled Windows 10, some of the sluggishness is gone but on Google Drive and Chrome I still find that it is slower compared to my previous laptop.  Do I have a defective unit? Does anyone else have the same problem?

Getting all the possible BSOD errors on my NEW (replaced) X1 Extreme. That's disgusting considering I've paid around 3000 for the top configuration. I had this as a replacement because the previous one had screen issues, WiFi card non working etc  I'm totally sending this in for refund this time and I'm probably going for a different brand this time!

I just got my new Thinkpad in and wanted to install a second drive with Linux on it.  The bios sees the drive and I've already installed the OS on it but when I chose it it won't boot.  It just keeps booting to the primary drive with WIndows 10 on it. Can anyone tell me if the WD SSD drives won't work for some reason in this computer?  The drives are listed as supported for the X1 I know.  Seems strange it would work in the X1 and not the X1 Extreme. Thanks, Glenn

Hi I bought a X1 Extreme last week and it's driving me nuts already. The notebook simply does not charge. When I plug-in the power adapter, Windows says that the power supply is plugged-in. But the battery status doesn't change, in both ways (it's not charging but also not discharging). It just stays at the current charging status for hours. I also have Lenovo dockingstation "ThinkPad Thunderbolt 3 Workstation Dock 170W" and it's the same problem. After a research on the internet, I found the following article which actually helps, but only for a single charge. But as soon as I unplug the power supply again, I have to reboot again, turn of the battery in the BIOS and reconnect the power supply again. https://stebalien.com/blog/fix-for-lenovo-x1-carbon-not-charging/ The drivers are all up to date (installed via Lenovo System Update application). Does anybody suffer from this issue aswell? Thanks for your help!

My new X1 Extreme hangs every few days. It locks up HARD, so that the only way to restart is to hold the power button down until it turns off.I've updated all the drivers, but one:The U630 Intel video driver will not install. It complains that it can't install on this operating system (Windows 10). Has anyone else had this problem & found a solution? (more concerned about the lock-ups than the Intel driver) I also updated the BIOS recently, but that didn't help.

I'm a web developer and have an X1E FHD and need a monitor to go with it.  I tried the ASUS MB16AC but it's just not as bright and dynamic as the FHD - colors aren't even close, seemed dim and washed out (did try adjustments).  Anyone know of a monitor (portable preferred) that would match the X1E-FHD?  I would settle for non-portable.  Thanks!

I recently purchased a X1 Extreme and was hoping for plug and play eGPU via thunderbolt 3. However, the Akitio Node (+ 1080 ti) does not even power on when I connect the thunderbolt 3 cable to the port. Both the Lenovo Vantage  + Windows Update states my firmware + drivers are up to date.

A greeting to the community. Can someone tell me if the Samsung 970 Pro m.2 PCIe NVMe 1 Tb SSD to be installed on the second slot is compatible with X1 Extreme?I ask because a Samsung P951 SSD caused a blue screen and did not start the PCThank you all

A:Installing a second SSD on The ThinkPad X1 Extreme

docet,I assume the BSOD issue could be caused by RAID settings. In this case both drives must be the same type and have the same capacity.

Just a quick question I have looked at the specs of the new X1 Extreme Would like to know if it is fitted with a WWAN 4G LTE card? X1 carbon has always been a business laptop , and if the X1 Xxtreme doe not have the WWAN facility it kinda defeats the purpose of a versilte extreme on  the go  business laptop.? Any idea>

On my new Thinkpad X1 Extreme, I can't activate Bitlocker "automatic mode" as it should be with Windows 10 Pro 1809.I have a fully operational TPM 2.0: But as shown in system information, it's due to "Un-allowed DMA capable bus/devices(s) detected": With Vantage, I made a full update of the system, so I belive BIOS and everything is up to date. Is there a way to correct what Windows thinks is a DMA threat ? Somethink else to update ? Thank you.

I purchased an X1 Extreme (4K) a few months ago. I have run into a few issues and was hoping I could get some advice. For reference, I have observed these issues across multiple different Windows versions, GeForce driver versions, and Lenovo BiOS versions. I am happy to answer any follow-up questions in the comments. 1.When I have hybrid graphics enabled, I have observed significant stutter when scrolling in applications such as Google Chrome, Spotify, and more, especially when opening PDFs in Chrome. Turning off hybrid graphics resolves fixes this, but I was wondering if there was another option I had other than compromising my battery life by disabling hybrid graphics.2.When I keep the TrackPoint enabled, it occasionally begins moving the cursor on its own and keeps going for a few seconds, with no apparent way to regain control until it stops. While I can fix this by just turning off the TrackPoint, I enjoy using it and would like to know if there is a different solution to this issue. Thank you in advance!

I think this is a simple question but no amount of research I have done in the forums has provided a clear explanation....is the Active Pen 2 just the next generation of the Thinkpad Pen Pro or is something else going on here. Trying to figure out which pen to spec with a couple of X1 Extreme's and I just want to confirm that the Active Pen 2 would be the latest and greatest??

A:X1 Extreme - Thinkpad Pen Pro vs Active Pen 2

Think I might have found my answer in a somewhat obscure Lenovo Pen document: https://support.lenovo.com/us/en/solutions/ht500011 D. ThinkPad Pen Pro  (also known as Active Pen)An active penRequires one AAAA batteryThe largest size pen availableAlways housed externally of the systemCan be stored with an external holder accessory that attaches to the USB portMouse-click input

I have a Thinkpad X1 Extreme (20MFX002US) on order.  It has one of the two M.2 SSD bays not used.  I was hoping I could add a second drive.  They are expensive so I thought I'd better check first to see if it will work in this machine before I order it.  I am NOT doing RAID with the second drive.  I just want the machine to recognize it for added storage.  This is running Windows 10.  Here is the drive I was considering:Samsung 970 PRO Series - 1TB PCIe NVMe - M.2
