Full Local Disk C Suddenly Full!

Q: Full Local Disk C Suddenly Full!

Yesterday my computer still had 50 percent of its memory left, then today when i turned it on, i only have about 3 GB left I don't know what happened, the only thing i installed that day was an update for windows media player, but it was still fine even after that. Please Help.

Preferred Solution: Full Local Disk C Suddenly Full!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

My Local Disc C is at 90% full all of a sudden: I only have about 9GB free from a total of about 200GB. I have two other discs - D for random things like movies, music, pictures etc. and E for games and programs, both were given 400GB and are almost free as I don't store much on my computer. I install nor store anything on C other than what Windows puts there so my disc was at 20GB usage at most before this happened.
I looked through the properties of all my folders in C and they are nowhere near this amount of data so where is this coming from and what can I do?

Additional info:
1. I tried to install a pirated copy of Adobe Illustrator 6 days ago (re-installed many times, couldn't crack so eventually I gave up and removed the whole thing - I only needed it to view a single file anyways), I think this happened after that but am not sure as I only noticed it yesterday - could that have bugged my system somehow?
2. I tried restoring my system to a previous state but it keeps failing to do so.
3. I run a Windows 7 Ultimate

Any help would be greatly appreciated...

Download and save the TSG System Information Utility (SysInfo.exe) to the desktop.

After it's been downloaded and saved, double-click it to run it.

Information about your computer will appear.

Hi alongepo Is it possible for you to give us more information? Like what's the total size of your C: drive, how much free space you have left, the programs you have installed, where the space is taken, etc. You can use WinDirStat to see where the space is taken on your drive, then screenshot the program and post it here so we can see it too.How to take a screenshot using the Snipping ToolFollow the instructions below to take a screenshot using Windows' Snipping Tool:Press on the Win Key + R to open the Run box;Enter SnippingTool and press on Enter;The Snipping Tool will open, asking you to choose the area to take in the screenshot;Left click on the area where you want to start the screenshot, keep it, and drag the cursor across the screen;Once done, release the left button to take the screenshot;In the editing window, click on the File menu then Save As;Save the screenshot in a folder that you can access easily;Once done, attach that screenshot to your next reply;List Installed ProgramsDownload MiniToolBox and move it to your Desktop;Execute it by double-clicking on it;Check the "List Installed Programs" checkbox;Click on the Go button;Once the scan is complete, a log will open.Copy/paste (select the Notepad, press Ctrl + A then Ctrl + C to copy, and Ctrl + V to paste) the content of the output log in your next reply;

Hello I have never actively used the Local Drive (always saved to the OS (C drive) yet it has its 465 gb of space taken up. Looking in to it I realized it is full due to backups taking up all of my space. I really do not have that much stuff on my computer (only a few games, the rest is all school stuff). My (C alone only has 217 GB used up. So I was wondering what I can delete and what I can do so this doesn't happen again. The windows file contains a picture of TreeSize showing all of my space going to backups. Thanks for you help guys.

A:Local Disk is full despite no active use

You can delete them all or none at all , You can reduce the space backup uses

To view and manage your backup disk space
Click to open Backup and Restore.

Click Manage space. If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

If you haven't set up backup, you won't see Manage space.

To change the amount of space that is used by file backups, under Data file backup, click View backups.

You can then select and delete older file backups.

To change the amount of space that is used by system image backups, under System image, click Change settings.

You can then choose to have Windows save older system image backups or just the most recent system image backup.

I've got a hard disk in my laptop partitioned into to two.

After a year of good service, my laptop is now, from time to time during use, displaying 'disk full' type messages when trying to save a file (Word) or unzip a file (Winrar) and things like that.

I can still access files on the disk, just not write to it, although the problem when it is occurring seems to be intermittent.

The disks aren't full and have over 10% free. When I restart Windows the problem goes away.

I'm guessing there is something wrong with the disk?

Any ideas on how to check for errors/problems or solve this?

I usually like to leave my computer on overnight. So I go offline, disable my wireless, and put on a video playlist in full screen to help me sleep. Anyway, today I woke up and saw the Windows Media Player no longer full screen, and the wireless switch was actually turned on. This is strange because I know I turned wireless off and I frequently check my system with Malwarebytes.

What could this be? Did someone snoop in my computer? Thanks in advance for the support.

First of all sorry for my bad english. But i'm from belgium, i do my best.
I have a windows vista and a few days ago he started to say "C" disk full. I've looked with a few programs what the real size is and it is 19 Gb but the vista shows 74,9Gb of the 75Gb in use.I've ran Ccleaner, Cleanup... etc and he deleted every temp file. But still without any succes. Even if i try to copy a file of 1Gb into the "C" folder he says there isn't any room any more. Does anybody has an idea what there is hapening ?

Kind regard Peter

A:Vista shows "C" disk full but he isn't full

Hey, Welcome.
Is it a Toshiba laptop? I know that some Toshiba laptops have a backup utility that is on by default that basically backs up all your information into a temp directory. Your computer might be doing the same thing. You can change the settings for this from the Toshiba recovery console, or something like that. It was located under the start menu/accessories area. Of coarse it might be a different in your case.

Hi, my local disk drive D came with about 500 GB in space along with my local disk drive C which came with about 300 GB. I only download and store programs in my C drive. Yet for some reason when I checked, my D drive had 400 GB taken up in space. I believe that I accidentally let one of the Samsung Recovery Programs run and I saved it into my D Drive. In order to recover the lost 400 GB, is it possible to delete all the files in my D Drive? Also I did not complete the recovery step for my laptop. Any response would be appreciated.
Thank you.

It's your system...your drives...your files.
You can delete them all anytime that you feel like it.
The logic of deleting all files on a hard drive...escapes me, but I'm confused easily .
Before doing anything...I suggest that you...
Go Start/Run...type diskmgmt.msc and hit Enter.

Hi Roszell

Download Belarc. It tells you everything involved in the operation of your computer. It will tell you the size of your HDD and how much space is used and what's available. If there is more than one partition on your HDD. If you have more than 1 partition, that could be where your space is.

You might want to do a backup and reinstall makeing one partition. If you do remember you will need a Vista setup disk.

But suddenly it's red-lining. Capacity is just about 'maxed out'. It should be empty apart from the Win7exe stuff & associated Program folders i.e. just the win7 engine components live in there (c-drive).

And as a side effect or something unrelated we know not which - Firefox is white screening after a minute or two of use and we are forced to switch to other browsers.

I have a Samsung laptop and have just noticed that my local disc D is showing full. I have no idea why this is and would like to remove what ever is on there, that shouldn't be there. I did contact Samsung support and they said these are recovery files and not to touch them.

I have no technical computer knowledge, so I am afraid to do anything incase I cause any problems.

I am hoping that someone can kindly advise me what I can do.

Many thanks.

A:Local Disc D is showing full

Welcome aboard, Sallym.

That is a factory made partition, includes some stuff those are needed to restore the computer in factory settings , if it is needed.

You need not to be worried about it, let it be there. But you make the recovery disks, too. There must be some mechanism in Samsung laptops to do it.

I'm trying to assist someone with this issue on their computer. She stated that her entire C drive went from manageable to full overnight. She could not tell me specific size before it went to full. The drive today shows 4.21 MB of 9.84 GB. Prior she deleted some things from the drive but it still continues to grow. As a matter of fact, a few moments ago the drive showed closer to 9 MB instead of the 4.21MB it's showing now.

Here's info on what she has:

32-bit OS

Total Virtual Memory 2.24 GB
Available Virtual Memory 1.30 GB
Her OS D drive is 55.3 GB free of 99.2 GB and doesn't seem to be getting any larger, though i just got the from her last night.

I've selected to show hidden files and did not see any large files anywhere. This is ALL that I see:
Program file: 358 MB
ProgramData: 434 MB
Users: 72.8MB
Windows: Larger than 639MB

Defragmenter was initiated and froze at about 13%.
Disk Clean-up is showing only 30.9KB of available space to be had.
Also ran Dell Diagnostics and everything passed.
System Restore says no restore points have been created and prompts me to create a point, however when i attempt to do so, its says there's not enough room on the C drive and I was not sure if I should create it on the OS D drive or not.??

Quick description of the problem is that my hard drive is suddenly showing up as full. I have 1TB of space. I don't know exactly how much I've used, but the last time I looked it was around 300 GB or so. I have done no major installs since then. I do not download movies and have minimal music. The only thing I do that takes up a lot of space is photography, but I checked any my photos folder is 180GB.

Is there a program that i can run that will tell me where all the space is being used and by what program???

note: I do use geniesoft and in my searches on this topic it seems to possibly be related. Any ideas how I check to see if it's duplicated my hard drive in some giant temporary file somewhere??

A customer's XPP machine suddenly won't boot, either regularly, Last Good or Safe mode.

I took out the drive and installed it as a passenger in another machine. I ran a virus check which came up clean but Tree Size revealed that there's only 18mb free space left on this 20gb drive. This is curious as the elderly customer only does a bit of bookwork and some emailing, and the last time I looked his usage wouldn't have been over 5 or 6gb total.

A closer look at Tree Size reveals that the usage breaks down to 2gb in bits and pieces, 1gb in program files, 3gb in Windows, and the rest, 13.6gb is in the System Volume Information folder.

This seems real strange and I'm wondering if a bug is responsible.

Does anyone know what might have occurred here? Or how it can be fixed? I guess I could try and empty the System Volume Information folder but I don't know if this would be wise.

Hello! I recently purchased the Dell Inspiron 15R directly from Dell in December 2013. I upgraded from 8 to 8.1, and installed some of the main programs I used on my old laptop (Chrome, iTunes, Office 2010, Dropbox, Google Drive). I don't understand technology well so bear with me please.
Today, I installed Microsoft Office 2010, the 64 bit version. It has worked fine, and I wonder if it is related to the 2 new drivers in the "My PC" folder. One is titled "Local Disk (W:)", and has 29.8 MB free of 349 MB, and the other is titled "PBR Image (X:)", and has 727 MB free of 12.2 GB.

All I transferred from my old computers were strictly the documents, photos, music, and videos via USB. I installed the programs again from the website or disc and did not transfer their folders or applications from my old computer. So I have no idea where these came from, or why they are already full.
Both of these new drives are full, so I attempted myself to check for system errors, and while the PBR Image was fine, I received this error window from the Local Disk:
I would like to know:
1. Where they came from and their purpose.
2. How I can free their space up.
3. How to fix the errors on the drive.

Thank you very much for helping this lost user!

Hey everybody, new user with my first post here. :)

I've got a problem--I'm currently running 64-bit Windows 7 Home Premium. I received a notification that my hard drive was low on space. I said to myself, "this can't be right, I should have about 370GB open." Sure enough, I opened up My Computer, and my C: drive was showing only about 700kb free. I ran WinDirStat and saw that two folders were taking up most of the space on my hard drive, both with gibberish names along the lines of 'Slp1!gLbkn95d or something like that.

I immediately deleted the folders, but I'm not sure of the cause, and would like to make sure it doesn't happen again. I deleted them about a half hour ago, and my HDD hasn't filled up again, but I've been trying to research prevention methods and have yet to reboot the machine. Anyway, I've run dds--here's the log:

Hey Tech Support Forums,

Recently found out that my C Drive is very, very full. Got a few messages telling me that the drive needs more space to be efficient.

On a 108 GB hard drive, 107 GB are currently being used, with 751 MB left free.

No idea what programs/files could be taking up that space.

Have not deleted anything, simply because I am pretty lost when it comes to this type of stuff.

Running Windows XP with Service Pack 3. Everything runs fine, its just pretty slow, and I'm sure getting rid of whatever is taking up all this space will make it run smoother.

Any advice identifying what is taking up the space, and then getting rid of it would be greatly appreciated.

Get your self a external USB HDD. Move your Pictures, Music, Movies and important files from the C: drive to the new external drive (usually located in the My Documents folder). Make sure they are no longer on the C: drive. Download CCleaner, delete temp files run Registry cleaner too. Defrag computer. Right click the C: drive in My Computer/Properties and see how much space you have gained.

I hope this is something that can be fixed...

Hello all,

I have a wired connection to the network of a student hall of residence. The network icon in the corner of the screen shows local access only (both IPv4 and IPv6 are shown as local). BUT I am fully able to browse any internet page, use Windows Live Messenger, Skype, etc.

But there are problems. Youtube videos won't load for love nor money, Skype conversations are a nightmare, I can't connect to my university VPN because it thinks I'm not connected to the internet...

Switching off IPv6 makes the connection fail. Because I'm in a hall of residence I can't change any network settings, all I can change is what I've got access to here on my laptop.

Any suggestions?

A:Internet access local only - but I have full connection!

Do you routinely run antimalware and antivirus checks? If not, I would run SpyBot Search & Destroy, Malwarebytes, and MS Security Essentials to make sure you are not infected before proceeding.

After that, check your hard drive space on C:.

I am running a Windows 2003 network at home, and have just taken delivery of a shiny new laptop running Vista Ultimate 32bit. I have upgraded the OS to SP1 and joined it onto my domain. I now want to configure the laptop so that any member of the Domain Admins group gets full administration access to the laptop in order to be able to install software.

I used to have my old laptop (running XPSP2) configured in this way so that I didn't have to put in a separate password everytime I wanted to install a piece of software. I'm presuming that there is the ability to do exactly the same in Vista, but I don't seem to be able to add a Domain group to a Local group in the security settings.

Any ideas?

there something generates files in size of 3.76gb,
as it has spaces in hardisk , the file name is ***.tmp.reg i try to delete all this folder, but it comes back in some time again,
Im sure its not nessesary to post hijackthis log, i thougth in windows xp its posible to make folder read only :) but iwas wrong :D its inposible, so anyone got any sugestions how to fix this problem, please reply or email me [email protected]

A:hardisk becomes full because \local setings\temp\

Try this

This is a cleaning program that deletes unnecessary files from temp and other places. I got 3.5 Gigs of my harddrive back, and it works very well...be warned though, most of your cookies and a lot of settings will be deleted, but generally it is well worth it and before you run it you can select what options to delete and such. Oh, its free too, no worries about a trial or anything.

i was wondering for those have have an internet with download speed of about 250 kb per sec is there a way to force skype to use it all i mean i can watch hd videos on youtube and cant have a stupid straight video chat on skype i dont use my webcam but i still cant get even pixelated video without it breaking and lagging and eventually dropping, its like download for example, downloading with the browser can be slow but if i use internet download manager, it takes full control of internet speed, full access and leaves nothing to the other programs , can that be done with skype?

A:Solved: is there anyway to give skype full access to internet with full speed

Youtube buffers video, a live chat isn't buffered.

If your internet speed is 256kb/s you need faster internet service.

See here for more info on internet connection speeds and how to see how much bandwidth Skype is using: https://support.skype.com/en/faq/FA1417/how-much-bandwidth-does-skype-need

There was a large document I was working on just about an hour ago. I had saved it, and I reset my computer shortly after because I wasn't able to connect to the internet. When I got back on and reopened it, the document was one massive line of squares. I found a variety of conflicting solutions online, though a common problem seems to be people saving their documents onto removable storage. It was just on my internal hard drive.

I tried changing fonts and I even tried pasting it into text forms online and even opening it on another computer, and it's still just one huge mass of squares.

Hello, have been searching the net for an answer to this question with no satisfactory answers.

System details,
Windows Vista Home Premium 32 bit
Intel Core 2 Duo 6600 2,4GHz
2GB Ram
500GB Packard Bell External Hard Drive - USB connection

I have a 500GB external hard-drive and Windows Vista is currently telling me it is full. When I check the hard-drive properties in Explorer it also shows up as very close to full. However when I select all folders on the hard-drive and check properties the size is only approx half. i.e 216GB

The drive system is NTFS and I have made sure in "Folder Options/View" that hidden files and folders are shown.

Does anyone have an idea what this could be ?

So I purchased a 1TB Toshiba Automatic Backup Portable Hard Drive - Burgundy (PH2100U-1EWR) back in December and it worked great. I reformatted it to FAT so I could play all of my movie files on my Playstation 3. One day a few weeks ago, I was streaming a movie and suddenly it got very slow streaming, like slow frame to slow frame with no sound. I plugged the HDD into my computer and it was suddenly slow at looking up files. Some files do not even come up. I am still able to transfer small files from the harddrive to my computer but I seriously have no idea what happens. I get a Short DST fail when I run Seatools For Windows and HD Tune doesn't bring up any results. I lost the receipt for the device and all I have is a online banking record as proof of purchase so I am nervous regarding Toshiba's warrently policy. I would ideally like to fix this on my own and continue using the harddrive. I don't care if I have to delete everything on it, I would just like it fixed! Please help thank you.

A:Toshiba 1TB External HDD suddenly slow and full of errors

You can't fix it on your own. You will need to contact Toshiba for warranty replacement and copy off any data you want to keep as they will just send a replacement with nothing on it. If the serial number on the drive comes up as less than a year old then you may not need a receipt but who knows how long it sat on a shelf, it can't try to contact them. If you bought it somewhere where they itemize and store receipts then they may be able to give you a new copy.

Also, you should use Toshiba's diagnostics on the drive: http://storage.toshiba.com/storage-services-support/warranty-support/software-utilities

I have a Dell Dimension 8300 running Windows XP SP2. I went to defrag the hard drive and discovered that it was too full to proceed. I then moved off a large amount of files to the second internal hard drive, ran CCleaner and freed up abou 28GB of space. I also used Advanced System Care 5 to clean things up. Then, suddenly, I boot up and get the Low Disk Space warning and my computer shows that I have 0GB available. Disk Cleanup found some extraneous files I could delete and CCleaner found some more. After this, I checked my disk space and it then had 20GB free. Out of curiosity, I refreshed and kept checking the disk space and it went down each time I checked it until it was at 0 again. I did not do anything else on the computer except refreshing windows.

I tried using TreeSize Free to determine where the space is being used up but got the error "...is not a valid Win32 application." I tried running it in Safe Mode and it gave the same error. I also tried to run Trendmicro's HouseCall online scanner and it gave the same error as TreeSize.

MalawareBytes found no problems. Kapersky Internet Security found 4 infected files during all of this and they were deleted. They resided in my archives on an external disc and originated in the Temp folder which has since been emptied.

A:Strange Behavior -Hard Drive Suddenly Full

Hi --- you guys were able to help me a couple of years ago and I am in a bind again.

My computer suddenly showed 100% of hard drive being full and 0% free space. Obviously performace has ceased.

I deleted tons of music, several gig.
I ran CCleaner
I ran Malwarebytes - nothing found
I ran Super Anti Spyware - found nothing
Tried defrag but needs approx. 15% free space to run so it didn't run
Tried disk clean up to compress files but this did work

I downloaded a couple of file size type programs but they would not load becasue of an error message that said they were not win32 applications

Hard drive is 225 Gig and I shouldn't have anywhere near that amount of space used up.

Note: I can currently get online (it takes about 10 minutes to open Firefox browser) but I am not sure I can install any programs becasue of the win32 error and/or space restrictions for the temp files used on installation.

I have a 4 gig flash drive and a laptop I can use if that helps.

I have tried everything and any help you can give would be much appreciated.

Thank you,

My laptop battery's full charge capacity has fallen from 60Wh to 35Wh all of a sudden. It used to be around 58-59Wh couple of months back, then I began using conservation mode for a few weeks. Later when I went back to normal mode, my laptop's backup was totally deterioted. It began lasting under 3hrs as opposed to 5hrs+ earlier under light load. Then I discovered the reduced full charge capacity issue. It's quite weird to see such a massive loss in capacity considering that I have under 70 cycles on the battery and the laptop is barely 10 months old and used quite sparingly.Things I have tried but to no avail:1. Calibration using one key recovery(The laptop kept working for over 2hrs under 2% battery while I did this!)2. Calibration using energy management3. Reset windows.4. Fresh install windows.Service center and lenovo india are highly ignorant towards the issue, calling this as an imported laptop(I got my laptop as a gift from my uncle in US, non 4k y700 is sold in India as well). The international warranty s**ks big time.Any help will be greatly appreciated, more so if you don't ask me to disassemble my laptop! Thanks

A:ThinkCentre M83 - DISK FULL; HDD, drive C: (Disk Cleanup, CCleaner)

You may have a ton of old Windows update files.  If you've never done it, run Disk Cleanup' as an Administrator (right click the Cleanup app, select 'run as administrator', then select to delete everything except for update log files.  Run it multiple times until it finds no more, it may take hours.
After that, download and run the free version of CCleaner.

I have weird recurring problem with my laptop. After running chkdsk (which takes couple of hours) my hard drive becomes suddenly full. Normally I have about 150 - 200 GB of data on my laptop, after mentioned procedure, suddenly I have no space left as (according to My Computer space indicator). It happened to me before, full system recovery did the trick, but I would prefer to avoid it. I'm running windows 7 premium 64 bit on my Lenovo y580. I've tried exploring my disc with programs like treesize, but it shows that I have only 200GB in use... Another thing to mention that might help a bit is that during chkdsk /b, there was a huge number (100 million -ish) of sectors moved to bad cluster file (or something similar). Any advices? Many thanks for help!

A:Main hard drive suddenly full after running chkdsk (400-500 GB lost)

Both CHKDSK taking a long time and identification of lots of bad sections are clear indication of a failing drive.

The sooner you get stuff off this drive and onto another new drive, the better.
