Home network no longer works

Q: Home network no longer works

I have 2 computers hooked up to Linksys EtherFast 10/100 5-port Auto Sensing Switch EZXS55W using Cox's Motorola SURFboard modem.

My computer is XP Pro SP3 P4 2.80GHz with 2GB of RAM.

2nd computer is XP Home SP3 Celeron D with 1GB of RAM. Compaq Presario SR1410NX.

We were able to share the printer and file a couple weeks ago and now all of a sudden we can't. I noticed my brother was grayed out in McAfee's Network Manager and EasyNetwork and I was the same way on his. Did a search about it and saw the tool McAfee offered for a network problem and ran it. That seemed to make things worse because now we do not exist to each other. Tried setting up a network through Windows but it's not working.

Ran ipconfig /all and there is a couple differences that I don't know how to fix.

Preferred Solution: Home network no longer works

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Home network no longer works

Remove the McAfee and Easy Network software. Run a registry/virus cleaner, reset the Linksys router to default settings, and rerun the Linksys setup

I am creating a virtual machine using an OEM ISO I was able to secure, of XP Home. The license I've been using on my XP Home box does not work - setup informs me that it's an invalid license. I have also tried using a friend's key, which also failed to register as valid.

Attempts to use a key generator have come up with nothing, and my google skill apparently isn't strong enough to uncover any viable alternatives. What're my options to find a key to install with? Something's up when even legit keys don't work, and I'm at a loss.

A:Valid XP Home license no longer works

Unfortunately, XP is not licensed for use on Virtual Machines unless you buy a separate license for it.
Discussion on how to circumvent the licensing protection of software is not permitted on this site.

I bought a copy of windows xp home retail back in 2005. Until now I have never had issues installing. However MAGICALLY this time its all belly up for no apparent reason.

My original install disk has been messed up for some time. However I have always been able to create a copy disk of it without issues that worked perfectly. Now suddenly no matter what I do I get errors when trying to install. I am using an old copy that I had made a few years ago -> ERRORS. I made 5 more copies today from both the original disk and the copy -> ERRORS!

I can do everything from within the setup utility, partition, format and setup for installation. But as soon as it reboots and begins to install ERRORS!

The messed up thing is that I just installed a fresh copy on my SATA hard drive last week WITHOUT ERRRORS! Now magically out of the blue I am trying to install a fresh copy on my IDE drive so I have 2 bootable drives and suddenly my disks are F***d up.

Is there anything I can do here? I still have my CD-Key and everything, just need to get a good of my disks. Maybe there is a program that can make a good copy out of the messed up ones.

A:Winxp Home Disk no longer works!

It may not be the XP CD.

What is the make and model of the computer?
How are the hard drives being "seen" in the BIOS?

Have you disconnected the sata drive and tried installing XP with just the IDE drive?
Is the IDE drive set to Master?

Hi. For the past two months I have been running a wireless network via a Linksys router in my house. I'm using a Dell Inspiron 7200.

For the most part all has been fine. However, from time to time, even as I surfed the web I would find my connection was no longer working. Most of the time I'd just wait a minute or two and it'd restore itself. Sometimes I'd have to manually disconnect from the network and re-connect. It wasn't much more than an annoyance that happened about once a day.

As time went by, however, the disconnections would occur more frequently. Last week it got to the point where I was being booted offline multiple times per session. The router was never unplugged. Resetting it didn't correct the problem either.

I would begin having to restart my computer to reconnect to my network, but that began to fail as well. I finally deduced the problem lay with the network card. I tried to run the Windows "Repair" option, but all it did was freeze it up once disabling the card. Now I cannot connect to my network at all. I tried installing a new driver, but 40 minutes later it was still "installing". The icon at the taskbar often shows Windows "searching for network address" for minutes on end. Short of buying a new network card, any repair ideas?

A:Network no longer works

sounds like your card got deepfried or something..

personally, i would see no repair option except for soldering on the card, but that's not something to do yourself if you don't know what to do..

my advice: get a new card.. they cost next to nothing nowadays.

I have a home desktop computer, and a work laptop. Over the years I've changed laptops and home computers, and have always been able to get network sharing working so I can transfer files between them by using \\<hostname>

I've had my current setup for about 6 months now, and have been able to share files. Let's call my home computer "alien" and my work computer "laptop".

A couple of days ago, I found I was not able to connect to alien from laptop, but I could connect the other way. Also, alien can ping laptop, but NOT vice versa. alien has a static IP of, and laptop has an IP address of via DHCP.

Any ideas about why laptop cannot ping alien (which would explain why I can't connect to it)?

You may want to disable the antivirus software for testing. With the ping not working it would seem like something is blocking the connection. Do the machines appear in the network folder under network?

Obviously you should make sure that Network Discovery and File and Printer sharing are turned on in the Advanced Sharing settings.

Make sure they are on the same Workgroup etc. and that file sharing is enabled through the sharing tab >Advanced Sharing> of the C:>Users folder.

I have been living with this issue for a couple of months and wish to now resolve issue with your help.

HP OfficeJet 4630 wireless printer no longer prints with my Dell D531 Desktop computer via WLAN, however works with all other WLAN connected devices, e.g., cellphones, netbook, laptop, and tablets. The print spooler indicates print finishes ok but nothing actually prints to
Dell desktop..

What I have done to fix issue without success:
1) Uninstalled/re-installed wifi printer several times on Desktop;
2) Reconnected HP printer to WLAN couple of times;
3) Properties for both desktop and printer show the same internet address;
4) Tried using MS Fixit printer trouble/diagnostic tools with no success (doesn't find issue); and
5) Read through this and other forums with no help so far.

Hello, I don't know where to begin. When I log on and my start programs run, I receive a couple different messages about something not being in the library. I would check right now before writing this, but I'm afraid my wireless connection would take too long to fix again. I've been having problems for the past week. Very irritating. Lots of time spent trying to unfold this disaster.1) I do have a hijack this log if someone would look at it. 2) Maybe two or three months ago, I updated Internet Explorer7 to IE8 and now it doesn't work at all. I'm stuck, forced to use Mozilla. 3) The wireless router IS in my house and it IS encrypted. YES, I DO have the password key... 4) For the past couple weeks, if I am in a program like MOBSTERS by MYSPACE my computer will freeze. Situation: Work Laptop - XP Pro
Home Desktop - XP Pro - set up as the router control
Home Laptop - Win2000

Prior to yesterday Noon H-Desktop and H-Laptop were fully shared between each other (read write either direction) W-Laptop mapped to both Home Computers and set up to read/write but not shared out (work does not allow shared folders). Everything worked great.

Work Laptop would detect the home connection, and clicking on the mapped drive would bring up share/login dialog box, enter info and access allowed.

I went to do a work presentation and the local had a hidden wireless network. The tech says to; double click wireless connection, view wireless connections, start new wireless network, put in , click manual WEP and next , type this in, and finish. Hmm... does not see our network. OHHHHHH. Here is an ethernet line we forgot was in here, try this.

So, I get home and the W-Laptop finds the local connection and goes active. I try to pull up my mapped drive and it shows as disconnected as it always does. I click it and I get permission error and the mapped drive goes POOF.

I try searching for computer //name and name, nothing. I try viewing entire network to navigate to it, nothing. Now, even though I am on the connection and can access the web I can no longer see my home network.

I tried deleting the connection for the SSID from the meeting. Removed it fine, still no visible network

You people helped me with getting my network up over a year ago and now I need assistance again.

I had a working phoneline network system between 2 WinXP machines and 1 Win 95. After attaching a switch box (2 computers attached to 1 keyboard, mouse and monitor) to one of the WinXP machines it's attachment to the network was lost and the NIC now shows a yellow exclamation mark and the comment that the device won't start. No link LED is lit on this 3com card.
The device manager lists a 1394 adapter as well which according to the properties screen is functioning properly. This adapter was installed by the WinXP when it detected the 3com card (after removing, reinstalling the 3com card and rebooting the computer to try and re-establish the network)

***when rebooting the computer after attaching the switch box it started in safe mode, could network info have been affected by accepting the preset safe mode parameters for the computer??***

Is it possible that this card by coincidence died just when I attached the switch box?

By way of testing the 3com card from the WinXP machine, I put it into the Win95 machine, results were the same, no link LED. Can I assume therefore that this card has died???
Is there another way to check a network card to tell if it is toast???

When I reinstalled the Win95ís 3com card back into it, it lit up as it should (steady link LED) but now this computer cannot ping itself ( or the other WinXP ( machine w... Read more

I am having trouble getting my HP (dv1340us) laptop (uses Windows XP) to connect to my home network. I've already asked a few computer-savvy people for tips, but they seem confused by the problem, as well, so I'm trying again!

About six months ago I was having problems with my laptop internet browsers. First it stopped allowing me to use Firefox, then the newer versions of IE, until finally the only browser I could use was an old version of IE. I sent the computer in to HP for repair, telling them of the browser problem, as well as asking them to fix the broken speakers and a problem with the battery one day went from working perfectly to suddenly dropping to zero power whenever I unplugged it.

When I got the computer back, I took it to the library and was able to connect to the free network there. Firefox worked just fine. So far, so good. However, at my own house I have been unable to connect to the internet for months now. I've tried everything I can think of. I just ran a WindowsXP repair CD, as well as the driver installation CD.

Since I got the computer back I have been unable to renew my IP address, and now that I ran the repair CD I apparently have "media disconnected."

The laptop has a strong signal from my router, but it connects with "limited or no connectivity" when I enter the WEP key. Oddly enough, twice two computer-savvy people have been able to get the computer to connect to my home network by playing around with... Read more

Hi all. I'm a long time lurker who's finally come across an issue I can't solve, so I decided it was time to bite the bullet, and join the forums.

On to the issue. I have a desktop running Vista 32 Ultimate, a laptop running Win7 Ultimate, a printer, and a network. The desktop (Vista) has an Asus P5N32-SLI Premium WiFi-AP Solo motherboard. When I first built it, I needed it to be connected wirelessly to my home network (hence the WiFi-AP Solo bit). I've since relocated this system, and have had it plugged, via ethernet, into my router (Linksys WRT54G2). Until two days ago, I've been able to access my network just fine. This is where things get dicey...

I was testing network compatibility with some older hardware of mine, so I briefly de-secured my network. Unfortunately, in a moment of utter stupidity, I went into my WiFi AP control panel, set it to "Access Point" mode, and cleared out my security settings from there. A moment later, I re-entered the information, but found that my desktop was no longer connected to my home network (Valhalla). I still have internet access, but that's it. With the WiFi antenna attached, I can connect to Valhalla just fine, but not via a direct ethernet connection.

Now, I can still "see" the other devices on my network in the "Network" window, but that's it.

I've tried every solution I can think of: reconfiguring the network via the router webpage, removing & reinstalling all onboard networking devices, and ... Read more

I have comcast cable and its running to my computers via a wireless router.

Nothing is for sure wrong with the connection or router, because I'm on my laptop right now.

However yesterday I went through the process of removing the HSA hijacker from my desktop, and afterwards my home network was messed up for whatever reason. The computer is running Windows XP so i went to My Network Places and ran Set up a home or small office network. However when I did so I mistakenly chose "This computer connects directly to the internet. The other computers on my network connect to the Internet through this computer". Then once the wizard was done my internet no longer works and under network connections there was a new listing entitled "Bridged network" or something of that sort. I disabled it realizing I chose the wrong option and now I can't get my internet to work at all.

The wireless card is getting a strong signal from the router, but its as if the computer isn't realizing its supposed to be looking towards the wireless card for a connection. Under Network Connections the ethernet card and firewire are also options but I've long since had them disabled.

I've exhausted all of the limited ideas I could think of, anyone have any other suggestions? I feel like its something simple but I'm just overlooking it.

I just cannot figure this one out. I have a pc wired to my home network. Internet connection has been fine and remains fine for all other networked pcs - wired and wireless. The pc can be seen on the LAN - I just cannot get out to the www. All of this changed following an attempt to update XP to SP3. The upgrade failed - I suspect because the partition I have set aside for my c drives is running low on space (about 900mb). Following this failed attempt I was no longer able to get out the net. The router logs have an entry that might correspond to my attempts:
Blocked incoming TCP packet from to as RST received but there is no active connection

I have my router assigning a fixed ip and I can ping the router and see other network pcs, a networked printer etc.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hello and thanks for any help in advance.

As a home network I have a destop PC (win 2000) and a wireless laptop PC (XP). For 9 months things were working fine with the wireless laptop using the "Host Printer" connected to the desktop. For some reason lately, the wireless laptop no longer sees this printer on the network...I've tried adding again, re-installing, etc. with no luck.

Additionally, I can no longer VNC in from the wireless laptop to the desktop, but I can from the desktop to the wireless laptop. So I'm not sure if it's the same problem as the printer with connectivity to the desktop from the wireless.

The printer is a Samsung ML-1450 Laser Printer.

The wireless laptop has Norton anti-virus and Internet security. I've disabled Internet security because that has caused some probs in the past, but still no luck with the printer.

Thanks - Bob D

Hiya all

I need to connect my home pc to my works network via vpn so that i can work from home due to family problems . At home i have win xp professional and at work we have a router (BT model 5861) plugged into the main hub and a winnt domain server on the works network.
I have configured the NT server at work with TCP accepted for incoming calls, RAS started, a vpn port opened etc as per the microsoft guide. And have ensured that my user id on the domain server has dial in permission

However when i try to establish a connection from home i cannot establish a link but get a '678' error, the computer did not respond. I have contacted the ISP for work who say the bt router is not blocking any ports. And i have checked that my home pc does not have winsocks proxy running. I can ping the public IP of the works router fine from home.

When i tried to connect from an older machine using win98 i got 'the host refused the connection' instead

Does anyone have any idea what i could be doing wrong? . Is it possible the router is blocking ports despite the claim by demon? (there is no config option for the router just a login screen).

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Printer plugged into Win7 box - how to print from remote XP machine? describes an original difficulty I had getting remote computers (laptops and desktops) to print to a USB printer connected to my Windows 7 box. Read far enough and you'll see that I solved that problem using Networking issue - Win7 printer, XP remote machines

Fast forward 13 or so months. Since that time I have replaced the printer, I've had a motherboard and processor issue with my box (since fixed), and no interruption of things working as they should. My printer - Canon ip4800 series - is USB hardwired to my Windows 7 computer, and the other home computers - two Windows 7 laptops, an XP box, and an XP netbook - can print to the printer, and view files on my Win7 machine, over our wireless home network. And that's been constant through the changes described.

Then yesterday, for no known reason, my daughter's Win7 laptop stopped being able to print. She'd send jobs to the correct printer, but they'd just queue up, with the queue visible from her machine, but not when I looked at the printer from my machine (that is looking at the print queue from her machine shows the jobs, but looking at it from mine shows no jobs).

Nothing I did would result in stuff from her machine, from any application, to go to the printer.

I finally deleted the printer from her machine, figuring I'd just add it back.

Hi I'm hoping someone on here can help.
I'll try and keep this brief, we were having problems with our netgear router (DGN1000) mainly with connection when online gaming with PS3, generally poor connection - so purchased a TP-Link router (TD-W8960N). We could usually access the netgear wirelessly on our laptops Dell and Acer Aspire 4820T (both Windows 7) without any problems and were still doing so last night. However hubby attempted to install the new router last night and all seemed to go fine but after installing we couldn't connect to the wireless network through laptops, iphone ps3 etc - even though we could see the network with excellent strength, after hours of trying called TP-Link they went through everything they could think of and still no joy. Gave up in the end and went to reinstall the netgear Router and now we have the same problem with this router, even though earlier in the night it wasn't a problem - we deleted the previous networks so there was nothing stored in memory & tried everything we can think of (although neither of us are brilliant with IT we do usually get by).
We even set up an unsecured wireless network (on both routers) and still couldn't connect - any advice would be greatly received - many thanks

Ever since getting DSL and networking two computers together, I've been unable to use Web mail from one of the computers.

It surfs fine and can dod POP mail, but my wife had to give up her Hotmail account because any click beyond the login page (like to view the inbox) would time out. She still hasn't forgiven me.

Now she has a need to be active in a Yahoo!Group, and she can't use Yahoo mail or several of the posting and forum functions within the group.

My other computer can do everything fine and it is running XP and this was still on ME, so I upgraded -- but it didn't fix the problem.

But here's something interesting -- everything works file if I dial into the Internet with this computer. The problem only exists if I'm using the home network on the DSL.

I've gotten lots of advice -- allow pop-ups, make sure Java and Javascript are enable (I even downloaded the latest versions), and I've checked HOSTS to see if there's an entry related to Yahoo (nope).

The latest suggestion was to switch ports between the computer that works right and the one that doesn't. No change.

Any ideas would be appreciated!

Is your SMTP address provided by your ISP? They may well be blocking connections from external IPs.

To get round this you could sign up for a GMail account and use those account settings along with GMails SMTP server to send e-mail.

My husband and I have a home network set up with two laptops. His is a Dell Inspiron 8100 and mine is a Dell Inspiron XPS. I run Windows XP Pro and his runs Windows XP Home.
Router is a Lynksys WRT400N Simultaneous Dual-Band Wireless-N Router
Modem is a Motorola SB6120 SURFboard DOCSIS 3.0 eXtreme Broadband Cable Modem

We upgraded our modem & router a few months ago and haven't been able to get the 8100 to see the XPS, however the XPS can see the 8100. Before the upgrade both computers could communicate just fine and we were able to get into each others "My Documents" folders. I'm sure it's probably something simple, but have no idea how to fix this. We need to get it resolved quickly because we store all of our college documents on my computer, and my husband needs to be able to access them. Classes start on Tuesday! HELP!

PCs are Win 7 Ultimate, All are joined to the Domain
Domain Controller, DNS, DHCP Server (on same instance) is Server 2012 standard
The network topology is like this: Router as Internet Gateway>Switch>Wired to Server and PC's, SIP phones, and Wireless Access Point all on same subnet. DNS and DHCP have been offloaded to Server Roles and switched off on the router.
All of the PCs have network cards that have joined the domain network at least some of the time since I set them up.
Some of them have always picked up the domain network and continue to this day.
Some of them intermittently pick up the domain network and other times join whatever other unmanaged network is available.
Some of them have stopped picking up the domain network altogether and will, no matter how many times their NICs are restarted, always join a non-domain (unmanaged) network.
When the NICs are not joining the domain, they are unable to ping hostnames of any devices on the network but nslookup of the hostnames usually works. The DC, DNS, DHCP server's IP can be pinged without issue, ipv4 or ipv6.
I am recording DNS Client Errors (ID 1014) on all of the PCs during the intervals when their NICs are identifying which network to join.

-On the PCs that are catching the domain network I am only getting a single error about the root domain, eg the domain is ad.domain.com and I am only getting errors about how the configured DNS servers cannot resolve domain.com (nothing with fully qualified

I bought an HP Pavilion 2 years ago. AMD A-10 proc with 8gig mem. Worked fine for 6 months. HDMI quit working. Started using VGA. Bought Seagate USB 3.0 2 TByte for backup. Worked fine. 18 months later MSI MS-7778 motherboard started giving me trouble on start up. I'd push the power button and the computer would lock up before getting to the point where I could enter 'setup'. I'd restart a few times and it would work okay from there. The problem kept getting worse over time until I would have to try to restart 50 to 100 times. It finally got to the point where it wouldn't boot up at all, no matter how many times I tried. I bought a new ASUS mother board and that problem was solved. But, the USB 3.0 ports would not work. Took the board back and bought the upgraded ASUS A88XM-A mother board. Still, I can't get the rear panel USB 3.0 ports to work as USB 3.0. They only work as 2.0. The front panel USB 3.0 ports don't work at all. I have downloaded the latest drivers from ASUS and re-installed them several times. I've also tried an USB 3.0 thumb drive in all ports. It isn't recognized by any of the ports. As a side note, the front panel card reader no longer works either.

Any help would be appreciated.

System W8, I.E. 10. Thursday 14 July suddenly found I could not get any web page, the Google ?circle? just keeps spinning. The only thing I can do is close the page, sometimes cannot do that and have to power off.
Tried using Mozilla and it seems to work OK. Having done searches it seems all support for I.E. 8, 9 and 10 was terminated at the beginning of the year. Is this the cause of my problem? I was put off using Mozilla when I found when you downloaded just 1 file and scanned with NIS, it showed total items scanned as 2 files! Wondered what the extra file is? Same file downloaded with I.E. 10 showed 1 file.
Should I upgrade to W8.1 and I.E.11? Are there any major disadvantages in doing this? Do you lose all your software and downloaded data on the hard drive during the process? Got data backed up to 2 external hard drives; I just wondered.
Thanks for any help you may offer.

For a couple years now I've connected my dell notebook computer with windows vista to my samsung tv display. Then the other night, all of a sudden while watching a movie, it lost connection and I haven't been able to get it back up since.

My computer actually detects the TV. I know this because I go into NVIDIA command center to select the different options. I still get nothing displayed on the TV when I select mirror or extend.

I've tried everything within display settings. I've also updated my NVIDIA driver. I've looked into the device manager and system restore (can't restore because all restore points are after the date this problem occurred). Still doesn't work. I know its not the TV or the VGA cable because a different dell laptop works fine with it. Its just plug and play (like mine use to be).

I'm not sure what else to try except a complete windows re-install (definitely hoping to avoid that!) Help. Thanks!

A:vga out to tv no longer works

I don't have any ideas at the moment except to say that I doubt this is a problem that would be solved by a reinstallation, so that may be a painful waste of time. Better do some more investigating first.

Did it just drop off immediately, or were there any "symptoms" at all?

Thoroughly check out the TV end, too, and make sure some "input" setting didn't get changed by a random press of a remote button.

Today water spilt on top of my case and I believe it got inside of the case. After cleaning up the mess, I tried to start my computer. It started fine so I had a sigh of relief. When I tried to connect to a web page, it would not load. It would say network took too long to respond. I can still connect to my router page. The network icon in my tray (the 2 computers) look fine. I then tried to move the computer to my router and connect it with a different cable, same issue. I tried to directly connect the modem to the computer and it said limited or no connectivity.

I thought the on-board LAN got fried from the water, so I went out and bought a lan card for a PCI slot. I have the same issues with this.

Any idea what is causing this? Is this a motherboard short? Do I need a new motherboard entirely?

I'm just really confused as to how it still starts up if it is a short and why I can still access the router page. I hope someone can help me, thanks a lot!

Hello ,

do you have a Windows Xp cd, not the restore cd's that come with some systems, the cd will have the Windows logo & 3D hollowgram/image on it

if you do not maybe you can barrow one from a friend/family member/co-worker as long as it is the same version that is on your system

if you have (Windows XP Home Ed. sp2 ) then the cd will have to be that / if you have a cd with (Windows XP Home Ed. )you will have to slipstream (SP2 ) onto a disk that you create
this also applies for (SP3)

this also applies to (Windows XP Professsional )

now if you do have the Windows XP cd with sp2 please follow these steps

performing a (sfc) system file checker

It is a scan that checks the core files & dlls of the (os) operating system and replaces them if they are corrupt or missing with the correct original version

#1 then select (run) , then press enter
a window will open
#2 type in ( cmd ) then press enter
another window will open
#3 type in ( sfc )then press enter
another window will open
#4 type in (sfc /purgecache) then enter / your pc will work like crazy / this helps in rebuiding the cache file (notice the space between (sfc & /)
#5 type in (sfc /scannow ) then press enter ( notice the space between the (sfc & / )

now a scan will start , have your (Windows XP software disk ready ) your pc may ask for this ... Read more

I would uninstall the PCI driver in device manager then let Windows 7 install it's own drivers and also update the firmware on your router. That is a 17 dollar PCI network card so there may be better options you can use.

ok, I'm not sure exactly what brought this on since this is a nearly fresh install of windows, but I have had a problem accessing any web content with internet explorer except for the web itself (thanks to firefox).

This means, Help files, Windows update, web forms, and many other features are completely unuseable.

Whenever I acess any kind of content through IE or it's engine embedded in windows, instead of displaying the HTML I am prompted to download it (open/save dialogue)

this is a serious problem and I dont want to re-install windows yet again but it looks like I might have to if things keep going this way.. any help? I havnt been able to find a single mention of this problem on google

Tell us about your IE security settings, are they ultra high?
looksee here-
I also use Spyware blaster-link below- to manage settings for both IE and firefox
It maybe IE that should be reinstalled rather than XP, but before that let us know how links help if any.

Hello there, only recently my windows live messenger stopped working. I definitely think it has to do with my firewall identifying Windows Explorer as something to block. When I click WLM to start up, it shows in my taskbar for a millisecond then disappears. I have tried restoring my computer to a past date (a day ago actually) and it worked fine. But again today it has stopped working, so I guess it's an update? Any help appreciated, thanks!

After the last update from MS, my sound no longer works. I rolled back to the last restore point, and then to the one just prior to that. Still doesn't work. I've changed no drivers in a long, long time.

A:Sound no longer works

What is the status of your sound "card" in the Device Manager? Does it show working OK or does it have an error code.

If it is shown as working OK, RIGHT click on the entry for the sound device and then LEFT click "Uninstall" DO NOT check the box to also uninstall the drivers. Restart the PC and when Windows starts it will detect and reinstall the sound.
