Thinkpad X380 Yoga - High CPU clock speed with low load & loud fan

Q: Thinkpad X380 Yoga - High CPU clock speed with low load & loud fan

I received my X380 Yoga with the i7-8550u a couple week back and the first thing I noticed was the fan running almost constantly. I checked task manager and noticed that even though the CPU usage is remaining low, the clock speed is running at around 3.80 GHz. My power profile is set to balanced with the minimum processor state set to 5%. If I change the maximum processor state to 99% then the clock speeds drop to below the base speed of 1.99 GHz and the fan quites down. The problem is the CPU will never go above 1.99 GHz when set like this, so performance is noticeably reduced. I've played around in the bios and the only thing that seems to drop the idle clock speed is to turn off Intel SpeedStep which again stops the CPU from going above 1.99 GHz. From my experience with my past computers the CPU should clock down when the load is low. Is this normal behaviour for this computer and processor? I am I missing a setting, or maybe a program or process is demanding full clock speed from the processor? Any help or comments would be appreciated. Thanks

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

So i got this laptop during orientation for the college i'm going to. I got excited when i saw the drawing programs on it so that i could sketch anywhere anytime without carrying a sketchbook to classes just in case i had time in between to draw. But the pen doesn't work. I have a Thinkpad Pen Pro, and while it seems charged and sometimes work, it's rare. In the 3D paint program, i can get a quick line out of the pen but not again. It's like the connection with the screen is wonky. How do i fix this?

Hello, I've got a brandnew ThinkPad X380 Yoga and after 3 days of using the pen isn't recognized anymore. I tried to update the driver and first that worked out, the pen was functioning perfectly again and as I checked it's battery it was fully loaded, so it can't be an issue of the pen I guess. But after 15 minutes of using it stopped working again and I couldn't find another solution than resetting and reinstalling the pen's driver so far, which is obviously pretty annoying if you need to do it every 15 minutes. I would be very glad if somebody could help me!

Hello my fellow ThinkPad friends, I know that there are already a couple of threads out there concerning high battery drain when the device is completely shut down, but none for the X380 Yoga yet. In some cases (E-Series ThinkPads), a BIOS-Update was released to solve the problem. I would kindly like to ask the Lenovo team to try and figure out whether the same can be accomplished for the X380 Yoga.  When my device is shut down, it usually drains 10-15% a day, which cannot be a regular thing. Of course, I have tried all the usual stuff: - Windows Quick Start is off - USB-power when off is off- Wake-On-LAN or USB-C is off- BIOS updated to R0SET29W 1.13 If you have any other ideas, feel free to post them. Otherwise, I would really appreciate for a BIOS update that might adress the issue. It is kind of annoying charging your device for the weekend knowing that by the next day, you will already have lost 1 to 2 hours of runtime. Best wishes,Manuel

Hello, I am a support engineer for our organization, working on deploying 2000 or so Yoga x380's at the end of the month.

We currently have an issue where all of these machines will blue screen if they are shut down. This has only started happening since they were updated to Win10 1803 (1703 was the previous installation, and no issues there) Going back to 1703 is not an option, unfortunately. Attached is a screenshot of the BSOD -
Code: DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL
What Failed: dump_storport.sys

I have:
Included the latest SCCM driver package in our repository and verified it is installing these drivers
Updated the BIOS to the most current (1.13?)
Manually downloaded and installed every driver on the "Drivers and support" page for this model, including multiple firmware flashes for every conceivable piece of hardware on the device
Run the disk cleanup utility to wipe away any trace of the previous 1703 install (windows.old)

Since we can't deploy like this, What can I do in order to get this fixed?

Our company recently bought 2 x380 Yoga laptops. As our companys policy states that we need to encrypt all our laptop HDD/SDD.As encryption method our company uses McAfee drive encryprion DE 7.2.x. We didnt know that x380 Yoga by default uses Lenovo NVMe Opal SSD drives, which is way put encryption policy in use.  What we did:At first we discovered that SSD are encrypted using bitlocker, so we decrypted it. After that we deployed McAfee DE and successfully encrypted SSD. We confirmed encryption and did laptop restart. After restart laptop can no longer boot from SSD. Bios stops at choose boot device screen. We can see SSD in boot screen, but choosing disk does nothing, i assume it cant access to the boot sector. It looks like Opal SSD is locked. What can we do in such situation, Is there a way to unlock it? We dont need to preserve data on SSD.

according to August edition, only some 45W and 65W adapters are compatibile? screencap on that section below.is there something special about Thinkpad X380 Yoga power input? we have users who have plugged in the old 90W ones and reported they do charge.[also the 135W (supposedly max to 90W? for power delivery?) come with Thunderbolt 3 dock, but that's different since it is via TB3/USB-C port, not the slim power port] we are curious, should we tell users to stop using the more powerful ones?  it is going to be bit hard to execute, we don't inventory those accessories, it will have to rely each personnel to check what they have (and quite a few bought separate ones for home)

I've had my X380 for only a few weeks now and I noticed it's already getting scratched from being in stand mode. I had an S1 Thinkpad Yoga for years and it never developed scratches from being in stand mode. I noticed that the rubber feet on the palmrest are not the high point but the area below the trackpad is and that's why it's getting scratched.I was thinking if I could get some more of the little rubber feet on the bottom of the palmrest I could maybe double them up to make them taller, but I can't find them anywhere. Does anyone know if these can be bought on their own? Or maybe another suggestion to prevent the scratching? I've temporarily stuck some black rubber strips on the feet to make them taller, but it doesn't look that great. Thanks

I'm havving issues with a brand new Precision 3620 workstation.
The processor is an Intel 6700K  4Ghz base clock and 4.2Ghz turbo clock.
1) For any kind single threaded task it always runs at 4Ghz and never at 4.2Ghz.
How can I make it run at turbo speed (bios is set so it should) ?
2) For multithreading tasks using all cores (also using SIMD) the clock drops to 3.6Ghz
Using Intel power gadget I measure 60Watt power consumption and 54 degrees C.
(Test is Prime95 using blend mode test, so not max heat small FFT test)

I find this clock behavior quite unacceptable for a PC sold as workstation.
Using the Intel Extreme Tuning tool I can fix issue 2) by rasing the Processor Core IccMax from 92A to 110A.  This indicates wrong CPU setting in the bios, but these hidden settings are not visible to be changed.
Issue 1) I can not fix.
Is there any way to correct these issues ?

CPU Fan recently (this week) started staying on constantly (louder, more noticable). It doesn't cycle down to a lower speed/lower audible/quieter mode/speed.  Have tried shut-down, reboot, etc... to no avail. Last night applied vacuum hose to back of CPU at fan opening (while CPU was turned off). Re-started and fan ran quiet for a few min.s, but then resumed it's louder audible operation. It also started audibly surging to a higher/louder speed when any activity is occurring on the monitor screen (i.e. opening and closing websites, etc...).I'm concerned that something might be wrong (or going wrong) with the CPU, in particular that the fan is going out.

hi, im looking to upgrade my graphics card. at the moment i have a 8600gt 512mb and am thinking about upgrading to 9800gtx+ but i was suprised by the high clock speed which the card runs at and a fear if i buy it i will not get the same performance i would with a faster mobo. my mobo is a foxconn A6VMX.

am i exagerating the loss of peformance i would experience?
is there a better card for me at no more than 140 pounds?

thx if you can help me with this.

A:High clock speed worries

The graphics card does not affect the mobo in any way, and vice-versa. You can put a GTX 280 in that motherboard without problems.

As for being better, that would depend on what kind of card your current PSU can handle, as well as what resolution you game at. So give us the native resolution of your monitor, and give us the PSU specs by doing the following:
Open up your case, look for the PSU sticker, and post all the specs from it. Here is what a typical PSU sticker looks like:

My Lenovo YOGA 510-14AST (purchased a few weeks ago in August 2018, runs on Win 10) gives out very loud fan noise for 5-10 secs once initiating the smallest task (e.g. opening a pdf. or a new tab in Chrome). This problem happens more often when the laptop is charged. Probably caused by high CPU usage, which during standard browsing, sometimes rockets up to 85%. Strangely, when in task manager I add up the running programmes, it does not give me the indicated 85%, but usually around 40%. I tried various "small fixes" from the forum/internet, like lowering max processor state, getting rid of background apps. and installing all the (I think) Win 10 updates. None of it seems to help. Also, the battery lasts ( standard usage - browsing and win office) shorter than advertised. So, I am wondering if these are common problems of this seria or a hardware/ other problems, and if there are any solutions on how to solve the fan noise.  I am not so much of a tech-savvy, and had a budged for a cheap laptop only, so would be grateful for any help or advice.

Hi, Couple of days ago i have noticed drops in the performance of my laptop. I couldnt stream  a movie or surf web on more than one web pages without lag even though i have 8gb ram and ssd installed on my laptop. Today i had a chance to review the issue. I have checked all lately installed programs and updates. Only thing that stand out was external graphic driver update on the day problem started. I tried rolling back that update and when it didn't work disabling the external graphic driver. That didn't help neither. I have also updated all drivers including bios and checked bios settings. Only thing wrong with the pc was that cpu speed stuck at 498 mhz and clock speed at 5x. (Checked with cpu-z and prime95 torture set no changes). I was able to resolve the issue by using throttlestop application and disabling bd prochot.  I know this is not a permanent a solution. Any ideas regarding this issue? Thanks Lenovo Yoga 500 - 14IBDWin 10 - 64 bitextra 4gb ram  and 128 gb ssd installed over standart hardware.

I received my yoga 730 15" just yesterday, and after installing a few games like fortnite and overwatch and testing them. They both run horribly even at the lowest graphics, in fortnite i get 20fps with huge stutters, and overwatch somewhat better, still almost unplayable though. Today, i found out that after launching the game and in about a minute or two the CPU clock speed goes down from 3.3 GHz to around 0.8GHz. When the laptop is idle, its speed is +3GHz but when gaming less than 1GHz, shouldn't it be the other way around? I've looked around the internet for a solution all day, but I cannot find anything that helps. Should I just return this and get a replacement or something if no solution is found? Anyways, feel free to suggest any solutions that may help. Thanks!

I need help in understanding one simple thing that I find difficult to realise of my CPU.
You can see my specs, I filled all of them in while registering. My BIOS is fully up-to-date, and, except the battery which does not charge, this laptop works fine.
I am not a wealthy-enough person to buy "spare parts" for my laptop to test it.
The problem I am encountering features my CPU, an Intel Core i7 3537U which is designed to run at 2GHz, as the benchmarks state.
Some time ago I noticed how the "System Information" windows in the Control Panel states the following on the "Processor" line "Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-3537U CPU @ 2.00GHz 2.50GHz" and I always asked myself why does it have 2 clock speeds.
Today, having some spare times, I wanted to go in depth, and downloaded CPU-Z and discovered that the clock speed fluctuates between 2893.10 MHz and 3092.63 MHz, which is much over than both 2 and 2.5GHz. Is this normal? I never practiced overclocking. BSODs are rare (1/month) and, when they happen, they are always of code 0x00000124 (hal.dll is the main problem, then ntoskrn.exe is also considered problematic, BlueScreenView highlights them both red). I know it is a hardware issue but I don't know what is it related to, maybe to this?
Thank you in advance for your help.

I am running the latest drivers from Lenovo's website and I have noticed that after a while (possibly after putting my computer to sleep and waking it up again), the ETD Control Center (which must be running in order to have full touchpad functionality) will constantly use ~30% CPU. This obviously impacts battery life, but it also makes my laptop produce more heat and noise than it would otherwise, while running slower. It is undesirable behavior. I have already tried uninstalling the drivers and reinstalling them, running the older version, or running the newer version. Nothing helps. Whenever this software is running, it does not take long before it is thrashing my CPU. Currently I am running the latest version of the software that is available on Lenovo's website, and I have updated everything possible using Lenovo's update software. I am running windows 10 and have the Elan touchpad drivers installed. Hi all, Got a bit of a strange one. I have one user with an X380 Yoga - since day 1 from brand new the stylus has been very intermittent (more off than on) and now it simply does not register on the users screen at all. Touch screen works as expected. I brought over another X380's stylus and it worked fine on the laptop screen. I then brought the "broken" stylus back, and it worked as expected on another X380. So to summarise, I can confirm both Styluses work, both screens work, but one stylus doesn't work on one screen, and one works on both. I have sent in the laptop twice after that and it still has not been fixed.  The system and audio board have been replaced.  I even sent in the headphones with it and they still couldn't figure it out. I do not know what to do now.  I'm pretty frustrated about the experience and probably won't buy a Lenovo product again.   Is there anything else I can do?

Hello, I purchased a new lenovo Yoga 720 15" model #80X7003VUS and have been having severe performance issues related to CPU throttling due to temperatures on Core #0 approaching the Thermal Juncture Limit.  I noticed initial symptoms while playing Dota 2 - Not exactly a demanding game for a 7700HQ + GTX 1050M. Symptoms were drastic drops in framerates to the low teens from a baseline of over 70.  I ran windows performance and resource monitor to diagnose and noticed that my CPU was downclocking causing the degraded performance. To confirm this I ran some diagnostics with both RealTemp and CoreTemp as monitoring tools and Prime95 to simulate artificial load. Below is a Snippet of the aforementioned test.CPU Full Load This test was run with Prime95 with 8 threads to load all 4 cores (4x2 since hyperthreading).  The CPUs are shown with 100% in the image as well as relevant temperatures.Core #0 and #2 are running extremely hot - with Max Temps hitting 100C and 97C respectively causing the processor to underclock to avoid damage, while Cores #1 and #3 are well within normal operating ranges. I halted this test due to fear of damage after less than a few minutes.  This second image shows the Core temperatures roughly a few minutes after the stopped tests once CPU load was roughly baseline with only light processes running (Load on all Cores less than 10%)CPU Base Load (Less than 10%) Finally this third imag... Hello and welcome,

I can't find any reference on the web or in the X380 base spec that indicates this is possible.  My guess is NO, but can't really verify one way or the other.

I can say that mSATA should not be part of the conversation.  The WWAN slot is m.2 NOT mSATA.  mSATA has not been used in Lenovo products for several generations.

Hi Lenovo Community, I'm facing pretty strange CPU Performance problems on the X380 Yoga with i7-8550U CPU. The CPU performance becomes very bad after some operating time. I understand the X380 has a limited cooling capacity, but this behaviour is pretty strange. Environment: X380 Yoga, i7-8550U, 16GB Memory, 512GB SSD, Windows 10 1703 Enterprise, SCCM Driver Package used for image building and installation. Bios Version 1.14 installed (most recent one). Drivers are all checked, and are the most recent version. Speed Step Settings in Bios are on Max Performance, on OS also on Max performance. Running Standard Office applications, like Outlook, Skype, Firefox and some management tools. After system boot everything is performing fine for about 1 hour. (I wasn't able to  record the exact time so far). After this, the system starts to get really slow, and shows a bad response time. As soon as some CPU load is applied, the CPU clock in Task Manager goes down, also the CPU load is not able to reach 100%. The CPU Temperature does not go over about 60 at this point. Directly after the system start it goes up to about 85C. I monitored the CPU with HWMonitor, and put some stress to the Laptop using Prime 95. After some minutes Torture Test I see following values in HWMonitor (see attachment Prime 1.jpg) After about 1 hour run time, I see following: (see attachment Prime 2.jpg) So, the CPU Clock is far down, all temperatures are not really high, no... When I write something in Word, the pen starts lagging. The option 'pen' turns off and instead of writing it starts scrolling. I can't write longer than 3 seconds. I don't have this problem with other apps, only with Word.

My new X380 Yoga does not start at all- when hooking on the power the LED light was first orange and now white (assuming it has been charged)- when hooking on the power the red LED light (in the i in Thinkpad logo) on the screen cover lights up. The red LED light on the keyboard doesn't do anything.- Computer doesn't make any sound, no fan, nothing. Tried:- pressing it 5, 10 , 30 seconds, nothing happens.- pressing reset on the bottom (with paperclip), nothing happens. Anybody any ideas, or was it just dead on arrival?

I'm trying to see how to charge the x380 Yoga through the Ultra Dock we have just purchased. It seems like i need to have BOTH the DOC and a seperate charger connected - is this really true? Thanks for your help in explaining this. p.s. you can't do a Network boot through the ultra dock either, for that you need to seperate mini network cable.

Attached is a screenshot of the BSOD - Code: DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUALWhat Failed: dump_storport.sys I have:Included the latest SCCM driver package in our repository and verified it is installing these driversUpdated the BIOS to the most current (1.13?)Manually downloaded and installed every driver on the "Drivers and support" page for this model, including multiple firmware flashes for every conceivable piece of hardware on the deviceRun the disk cleanup utility to wipe away any trace of the previous 1703 install (windows.old) Since we can't deploy like this, What can I do in order to get this fixed?

I have a brand new X360 Yoga to which I added a 128GB micro SD card.  I was just typing on the keyboard when the card just popped out of the slot.  Now no matter how I try it will not stay inserted at all.   I tried the card in another X360 and it locks in fine.  Looks like the slot is defective.

A:X380 Yoga - Inserting SD card into the slot

Hi,

You've posted in a Yoga Book forum, your subject mentions a Yoga 2 Pro, and your message says X360 (which I can't find anywhere...).

Please clarify which model you're asking about so we can move the post to the appropriate location.

Z.

Hello,I am a support engineer for our organization. I've recently tested 15-20 of our X380's and found that the Integrated camera will not activate, and has an error in the driver, as shown in the attached screenshot. Is there a known fix for this? Installing the driver listed on your site, and any listed in the software matrix for the specified device type (20LJ) yields no different results. And we also have 1500 of these coming this week to be prepped for deployment...Please let me know what the fix is
