Thinkpad X380 Yoga - High CPU clock speed with low load & loud fan

Q: Thinkpad X380 Yoga - High CPU clock speed with low load & loud fan

I received my X380 Yoga with the i7-8550u a couple week back and the first thing I noticed was the fan running almost constantly. I checked task manager and noticed that even though the CPU usage is remaining low, the clock speed is running at around 3.80 GHz. My power profile is set to balanced with the minimum processor state set to 5%. If I change the maximum processor state to 99% then the clock speeds drop to below the base speed of 1.99 GHz and the fan quites down. The problem is the CPU will never go above 1.99 GHz when set like this, so performance is noticeably reduced. I've played around in the bios and the only thing that seems to drop the idle clock speed is to turn off Intel SpeedStep which again stops the CPU from going above 1.99 GHz. From my experience with my past computers the CPU should clock down when the load is low. Is this normal behaviour for this computer and processor? I am I missing a setting, or maybe a program or process is demanding full clock speed from the processor? Any help or comments would be appreciated. Thanks

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello my fellow ThinkPad friends, I know that there are already a couple of threads out there concerning high battery drain when the device is completely shut down, but none for the X380 Yoga yet. In some cases (E-Series ThinkPads), a BIOS-Update was released to solve the problem. I would kindly like to ask the Lenovo team to try and figure out whether the same can be accomplished for the X380 Yoga.  When my device is shut down, it usually drains 10-15% a day, which cannot be a regular thing. Of course, I have tried all the usual stuff: - Windows Quick Start is off - USB-power when off is off- Wake-On-LAN or USB-C is off- BIOS updated to R0SET29W 1.13 If you have any other ideas, feel free to post them. Otherwise, I would really appreciate for a BIOS update that might adress the issue. It is kind of annoying charging your device for the weekend knowing that by the next day, you will already have lost 1 to 2 hours of runtime. Best wishes,Manuel

Hello, I am a support engineer for our organization, working on deploying 2000 or so Yoga x380's at the end of the month.

We currently have an issue where all of these machines will blue screen if they are shut down. This has only started happening since they were updated to Win10 1803 (1703 was the previous installation, and no issues there) Going back to 1703 is not an option, unfortunately. Attached is a screenshot of the BSOD -
Code: DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL
What Failed: dump_storport.sys

I have:
Included the latest SCCM driver package in our repository and verified it is installing these drivers
Updated the BIOS to the most current (1.13?)
Manually downloaded and installed every driver on the "Drivers and support" page for this model, including multiple firmware flashes for every conceivable piece of hardware on the device
Run the disk cleanup utility to wipe away any trace of the previous 1703 install (windows.old)

Since we can't deploy like this, What can I do in order to get this fixed?

I've had my X380 for only a few weeks now and I noticed it's already getting scratched from being in stand mode. I had an S1 Thinkpad Yoga for years and it never developed scratches from being in stand mode. I noticed that the rubber feet on the palmrest are not the high point but the area below the trackpad is and that's why it's getting scratched.I was thinking if I could get some more of the little rubber feet on the bottom of the palmrest I could maybe double them up to make them taller, but I can't find them anywhere. Does anyone know if these can be bought on their own? Or maybe another suggestion to prevent the scratching? I've temporarily stuck some black rubber strips on the feet to make them taller, but it doesn't look that great. Thanks

I'm havving issues with a brand new Precision 3620 workstation.
The processor is an Intel 6700K  4Ghz base clock and 4.2Ghz turbo clock.
1) For any kind single threaded task it always runs at 4Ghz and never at 4.2Ghz.
How can I make it run at turbo speed (bios is set so it should) ?
2) For multithreading tasks using all cores (also using SIMD) the clock drops to 3.6Ghz
Using Intel power gadget I measure 60Watt power consumption and 54 degrees C.
(Test is Prime95 using blend mode test, so not max heat small FFT test)

I find this clock behavior quite unacceptable for a PC sold as workstation.
Using the Intel Extreme Tuning tool I can fix issue 2) by rasing the Processor Core IccMax from 92A to 110A.  This indicates wrong CPU setting in the bios, but these hidden settings are not visible to be changed.
Issue 1) I can not fix.
Is there any way to correct these issues ?

The unit is not running hot or overheating. There seems to be lots of comments on the forums and net in general about people having this same issue with the Lenovo Yogas - what else can I try before this brand new laptop gets sent back for a refund? Any ideas would be appreciated.I'm a develop working in  large microsoft environment, running visual studio 2015 Enterprise and SQL server 2014 and am the person in this office having the problem.  Lots of other developers running Lenovo Thinkpads without an issue - it is just this brand new Yoga that is having the problems.

I have a new HP All-in-One and the CPU fan is running at high speed at all times, even when the CPU load is low. It's pretty loud and annoying. Looking at the BIOS the fan is reporting speeds of 2400+ at all times. This seems high for a PC just viewing the BIOS. Is this just how these PCs operate or is there a problem with mine?

Recently this thing has begun setting off a high pitched loud noise.  It has passed Lonovo syestem tests, all drivers are updated.  It does not sound like some of the sound files I have heard on-line.  Mine is more high pitched and loud then those of the fan sound.  Muting the speakers does not always help but this sound appears to becoming from the speakers not like a rattline sound when something is moving inside.  Any ideas of how to determine what it is are appreciated.

CPU Fan recently (this week) started staying on constantly (louder, more noticable). It doesn't cycle down to a lower speed/lower audible/quieter mode/speed.  Have tried shut-down, reboot, etc... to no avail. Last night applied vacuum hose to back of CPU at fan opening (while CPU was turned off). Re-started and fan ran quiet for a few min.s, but then resumed it's louder audible operation. It also started audibly surging to a higher/louder speed when any activity is occurring on the monitor screen (i.e. opening and closing websites, etc...).I'm concerned that something might be wrong (or going wrong) with the CPU, in particular that the fan is going out.

HOW CAN I SPEED UP MY MOBO?
am i exagerating the loss of peformance i would experience?
is there a better card for me at no more than 140 pounds?

thx if you can help me with this.

A:High clock speed worries

The graphics card does not affect the mobo in any way, and vice-versa. You can put a GTX 280 in that motherboard without problems.

As for being better, that would depend on what kind of card your current PSU can handle, as well as what resolution you game at. So give us the native resolution of your monitor, and give us the PSU specs by doing the following:
Open up your case, look for the PSU sticker, and post all the specs from it. Here is what a typical PSU sticker looks like:

Hi, Couple of days ago i have noticed drops in the performance of my laptop. I couldnt stream  a movie or surf web on more than one web pages without lag even though i have 8gb ram and ssd installed on my laptop. Today i had a chance to review the issue. I have checked all lately installed programs and updates. Only thing that stand out was external graphic driver update on the day problem started. I tried rolling back that update and when it didn't work disabling the external graphic driver. That didn't help neither. I have also updated all drivers including bios and checked bios settings. Only thing wrong with the pc was that cpu speed stuck at 498 mhz and clock speed at 5x. (Checked with cpu-z and prime95 torture set no changes). I was able to resolve the issue by using throttlestop application and disabling bd prochot.  I know this is not a permanent a solution. I received my yoga 730 15" just yesterday, and after installing a few games like fortnite and overwatch and testing them. They both run horribly even at the lowest graphics, in fortnite i get 20fps with huge stutters, and overwatch somewhat better, still almost unplayable though. Today, i found out that after launching the game and in about a minute or two the CPU clock speed goes down from 3.3 GHz to around 0.8GHz. When the laptop is idle, its speed is +3GHz but when gaming less than 1GHz, shouldn't it be the other way around? I've looked around the internet for a solution all day, but I cannot find anything that helps. Should I just return this and get a replacement or something if no solution is found? Anyways, feel free to suggest any solutions that may help. Thanks!

I need help in understanding one simple thing that I find difficult to realise of my CPU.
You can see my specs, I filled all of them in while registering. My BIOS is fully up-to-date, and, except the battery which does not charge, this laptop works fine.
I am not a wealthy-enough person to buy "spare parts" for my laptop to test it.
The problem I am encountering features my CPU, an Intel Core i7 3537U which is designed to run at 2GHz, as the benchmarks state.
Some time ago I noticed how the "System Information" windows in the Control Panel states the following on the "Processor" line "Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-3537U CPU @ 2.00GHz 2.50GHz" and I always asked myself why does it have 2 clock speeds.
Today, having some spare times, I wanted to go in depth, and downloaded CPU-Z and discovered that the clock speed fluctuates between 2893.10 MHz and 3092.63 MHz, which is much over than both 2 and 2.5GHz. Is this normal? I never practiced overclocking. BSODs are rare (1/month) and, when they happen, they are always of code 0x00000124 (hal.dll is the main problem, then ntoskrn.exe is also considered problematic, BlueScreenView highlights them both red). I know it is a hardware issue but I don't know what is it related to, maybe to this?
Thank you in advance for your help.

I am running the latest drivers from Lenovo's website and I have noticed that after a while (possibly after putting my computer to sleep and waking it up again), the ETD Control Center (which must be running in order to have full touchpad functionality) will constantly use ~30% CPU. This obviously impacts battery life, but it also makes my laptop produce more heat and noise than it would otherwise, while running slower. It is undesirable behavior. I have already tried uninstalling the drivers and reinstalling them, running the older version, or running the newer version. Nothing helps. Whenever this software is running, it does not take long before it is thrashing my CPU. Currently I am running the latest version of the software that is available on Lenovo's website, and I have updated everything possible using Lenovo's update software. I am running windows 10 and have the Elan touchpad drivers installed. [screenshot below]ETD Control Center ~30% Constant CPU use Has anyone else had this problem with the elan touchpad/windows 10 combination? If so, what is the resolution? Thanks for your help!

Hi Lenovo Community, I'm facing pretty strange CPU Performance problems on the X380 Yoga with i7-8550U CPU. The CPU performance becomes very bad after some operating time. I understand the X380 has a limited cooling capacity, but this behaviour is pretty strange. Environment: X380 Yoga, i7-8550U, 16GB Memory, 512GB SSD, Windows 10 1703 Enterprise, SCCM Driver Package used for image building and installation. Bios Version 1.14 installed (most recent one). Drivers are all checked, and are the most recent version. Speed Step Settings in Bios are on Max Performance, on OS also on Max performance. Running Standard Office applications, like Outlook, Skype, Firefox and some management tools. After system boot everything is performing fine for about 1 hour. (I wasn't able to  record the exact time so far). After this, the system starts to get really slow, and shows a bad response time. As soon as some CPU load is applied, the CPU clock in Task Manager goes down, also the CPU load is not able to reach 100%. The CPU Temperature does not go over about 60 at this point. Directly after the system start it goes up to about 85C. I monitored the CPU with HWMonitor, and put some stress to the Laptop using Prime 95. After some minutes Torture Test I see following values in HWMonitor (see attachment Prime 1.jpg) After about 1 hour run time, I see following: (see attachment Prime 2.jpg) So, the CPU Clock is far down, all temperatures are not really high, no... Hello there Recently some of our T550's have issues with the "Windows Driver Foundation" Task. The Notebook works fine until we connect it to a Dockingstation. As soon as the Notebook is plugged in it will start to get slower and slower to a point where it is almost impossible to work with it. The issue doesn't occure on all our T550's so it could well be a manufacturing problem but I first wanted to check if someone had similar issues or any advice on how to takle this. I already tried the following steps with no improvement:- Completely removing the DisplayLink driver from the system and reinstalling it after a reboot- Completely removing the graphiccard drivers from the system and reinstalling them after a reboot- Lenovo hardwarescan (no issues found) It would be amazing if anyone can help me with this issue. Kind Regards

Hello, I purchased a new lenovo Yoga 720 15" model #80X7003VUS and have been having severe performance issues related to CPU throttling due to temperatures on Core #0 approaching the Thermal Juncture Limit.  I noticed initial symptoms while playing Dota 2 - Not exactly a demanding game for a 7700HQ + GTX 1050M. Symptoms were drastic drops in framerates to the low teens from a baseline of over 70.  I ran windows performance and resource monitor to diagnose and noticed that my CPU was downclocking causing the degraded performance. To confirm this I ran some diagnostics with both RealTemp and CoreTemp as monitoring tools and Prime95 to simulate artificial load. Below is a Snippet of the aforementioned test.CPU Full Load This test was run with Prime95 with 8 threads to load all 4 cores (4x2 since hyperthreading).  The CPUs are shown with 100% in the image as well as relevant temperatures.Core #0 and #2 are running extremely hot - with Max Temps hitting 100C and 97C respectively causing the processor to underclock to avoid damage, while Cores #1 and #3 are well within normal operating ranges. I halted this test due to fear of damage after less than a few minutes.  This second image shows the Core temperatures roughly a few minutes after the stopped tests once CPU load was roughly baseline with only light processes running (Load on all Cores less than 10%)CPU Base Load (Less than 10%) Finally this third imag... Recently, I reinstalled my Netgear wna3100 driver. Ever since then, I've been experiencing problems with high pings in games where I normally never had problems with. Pages load slowly even just the home page of Google.

I've attached my ipconfig picture. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

A:High download speed and signal, high ping in games, slow page loads

To Disable Selective Suspend:

open the control panel
go to power options (you may have to set view to small icons)
click change plan settings
in the window that opens:
click change plan settings
click change advanced power settings, expand usb and ensure usb selective suspend is disabled.

I would also (while the device is plugged in)
go into the control panel - system - device manager - click the properties for it and make sure it's set to always on there as well.
I don't think the ipconfig can tell us much here since it's a data rate problem of some sort and not a actual connection problem from the sound of it.

The two things I mention above will hopefully keep your system from putting the device in 'low power mode' which may , or may not help your current problem.

I'm also curious if your system has recently slowed down in any other ways?

Back before I re-installed Windows 7, I would get this message whenever I plugged my Ipod in: "hi speed USB device attached to a non hi speed hub" and synching would take an absolute age. The funny thing though is that my PC is high speed USB capable. I ignored it for ages until I recently re-installed Windows. Voila! my problem was solved and when I plugged in my Ipod, all was good. I got no message and synching was as fast as it should be.

Until now.

I just plugged my Android phone in, and Windows said it couldn't find drivers for it, so I set it to automatically find them, which it did. As soon as it registered my phone, I got the dreaded "hi speed USB device attached to a non hi speed hub". Now when I plug my Ipod in, I'm getting that message again and synching has gone back to a snails pace. I went back and changed the "Automatically find drivers" back to the default setting it was on, but that has changed nothing.

What's up here, and how do I fix it? I'm using the same USB port the whole time and my PC is clearly capable of utilizing high speed, it just seems that plugging in my phone has done something to screw it all up. Any help would be MUCH appreciated as it will save me running off to work in the morning without my new podcasts cause synching is too slow.

Operating system is Windows 7 32bit. It doesn't seem to be a hardware problem, so I'll hold off on listing all of my specs unless something thinks i... Read more

A:"High speed USB device attached to a non high speed hub"

Is this a custom build or a store bought PC? Have you tried updating the Chipset / USB drivers?

If that doesn't work try going to Device Manager and Uninstalling the USB drivers (Windows will automatically Re install)

Hi.

I have this very annoying problem and I'm really out of hopes. I don't know what to do anymore. I'll make a summary of the problem and will be as concise as possible

So I have this Dell Inspiron N5010 laptop with a broadband connection (direct cable, no router) and 3 weeks ago I reinstalled my Windows. Everything went well until 2 weeks ago when the internet speed went down, dial-up like. Pages won't load, and if they do they load just partially. I called my ISP and they said they had no problem. I couldn't find any solution so I thought maybe, some sort of virus or spyware is doing this so I formated the whole hard-disk and did a clean install of Windows.

Unfortunatelly nothing changed, the download speed is the same. Here is a speedtest.net evaluation:

http://www.speedtest.net/result/2276053238.png

Drivers are up to date, no windows firewall, no antivirus and no windows update. The ISP support guy told me to deactivate IPv4 and IPv6 from Local Area Connection, but nothing changed. I did a TCP/IP reset which raised my down speed to almost 1 Mb, but after a few minutes it went back to "dial-up". With the down speed being the same, Speedtest sometimes shows me upload speed in between 50-70 Mb which is unbelievable (I will make a ss next time I see this).

And the very weird thing is that I have another netbook (pretty weak config, Intel Atom CPU, 2 GB RAM) and with the same cable it has normal speed (the kind of speed I had on this Dell too). An... Read more

Hi, and welcome to TSF.

Lets first try this:

Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
Now click on Network and Internet and in this window click Internet options.
Now click on the connections tab and select the button to never dial a connection.
Now click Apply and click OK.

Try if this works

Hello, I just got this x360 Spectre i7 15.6" laptop and I love it, except for the speed at which things load on the browsers. I have high speed internet and ran a speed test and the speed is as it should. I've tried multiple browsers, and even though I have a very strong connection to my high speed internet, it takes forever to open up even a single website. I regularly wait anywhere from 5 to 10 minutes for the site to load. I just got this computer so haven't even saved any files or installed any programs onto it besides anti virus software. How can I resolve this very slow loading time? I'd hate to have to return this computer, but cannot stand to have to deal with these frustrations with a computer I paid $1300 for!! Please help! Katy

I am hhaving difficulty finding an acceptable scaling mix between resolution, system scaling, and edge scaling. At 1080p, 125%, 125%, os navigation is mostly fine, but edge text is way too large. At 1080p, 125%, 100%, edge text is way too small. At all combinations text is inflated (but crisp) in certain elements while fuzzy in others. What scaling combinations work best for you? I am considering returning this to Best Buy and upgrading to a Pro 4 / Book, or even a Mac. The scaling is ruining an otherwise great experience.

I have wireless internet through my cable provider. My signal strenght varies from 5 to 48 mbps on most days. Why isn't the signal consistent and what causes my internet to get so slow. Is there anything I can do...call my cable provider?

A:High speed internet not so high speed

"call my cable provider?"

No. You are mixing up some terms, but it doesn't sound like this is an ISP problem.

For now I'm going to assume that you have cable internet service and a wireless router. If not, please describe. If so, please post the brand and model of your modem and router (or modem/router combo).

Wireless signal strength is usually given in terms of "n bars out of 5" or "good," "excellent," etc. What is yours, and does it vary? How close is the PC to the router, and what obstructions are in the way?

When your bandwidth varies from 5 to 48mbps it could be an adapter or driver or router problem, but more likely is wireless interference. Are there other wireless networks on your same (or close) channel?

Some people first just try changing channels (in North America the non interfering channels are 1, 6 and 11) without trouble shooting to see if that helps.

If you are having difficulty determining the channels of the networks you detect use NetStumbler for help: www.netstumbler.com
