Pavilion logs in but black screen. (Very weird)

Q: Pavilion logs in but black screen. (Very weird)

So this is a strange one. My pavilion will log in, however- while it's logging in, the dots that go round in a circle will freeze for a minute before fully logging in. When it does log in, sometimes it will be my background with apps etc.. but if I select an app, the cursor will have the round blue loading circle, but not do anything else, and pretty much freeze up. I can still move it, but not do anything else. Most of the time though, it will log me into a black screen. I can still see the task bar, I have a hideaway one so it pops up when I hover over it. But there is no info in the bottom right corner exept for the time, and there are no apps on the task bar like there'd usually be. I can't write anything to search in the startup menu, and if I try, the cursor just turns into the round blue loading circle again.I've tried the battery out and holding the power button-to no avail. I tried to ctrl-alt-delete, it doesn't open and if it does, it's behing a black screen..I tried to refresh with system recovery, but it just tells me, "There was a problem refreshing your PC. No changes were made."Under advanced options, there is an option called Startup Repair, but I'm worried about my files. Any help would be truly appreciated.

Preferred Solution: Pavilion logs in but black screen. (Very weird)

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello everybody, today my laptop has become blind. Let me explain:

My laptop was purchased in 2007
Alienware m9750
Dual nvidia 7950 go
Dual core 2.0
2 gigs of ram
80 gb harddrive

So here's what happened, today I was watch s movie on netflix when suddenly my screen goes black. Though I had crashed but my laptop was still on and the sound was still going. restarted, and the initial screen was slightly pixellated and garbled. Which has now made my laptop permanent garbled and pixely. After the windows logo. My screen goes black, but I am still hear the windows start up sound. I found that I am able to click on some music files on my desktop that are able to play, so this is a video issue. I reboot in safe mode which works this time figure to disable and uninstall the videocard drivers. I restart and I'm able to use my pc somewhat normally( still garbled). Reinstalled the nvidia drivers then halfway through says: error install failed or something, it happen really fast then crashed, tried restarting atleast 20 times in safe mode but it freezes up after it tries to load partition(1)\windows\system32\drivers\mup.sys

All of the other options for start up(even last settings to work) the screen goes black after the windows logo. I have tried tinkering with the bios but it doesn't help. Its basically being blind using a computer. So I'm wondering if there is anyway to possibly blindly open up command prompt and possibly disable or uninstall the drivers from there, I'm ab... Last month I received an update from Microsoft which blocked windows from booting and after a few attempts to resolve I reverted, disabled updates, and continued working as I had other things to do that day so I could keep my private research funding. BUT Today I decided to take initiative since I could not find any information about this anywhere else and Windows updated itself while I was not paying attention causing the problem all over again.
I cut down my boot logs into 2 files as I always keep boot logging and "No-GUI" enabled.
ntbtlog_BAD.txt is the log section where windows boots to a black screen with cursor, the log shows that windows is repeatedly ignoring the 3 main processor drivers for the CPU, GPU, and Power Management in the laptop, I can get into the security menu and restart or attempt to launch task manager but launching task manager loads for 20 Minutes and does nothing all I can do in this state is reboot into the F8 recovery and revert to a pre-update state
ntbtlog_GOOD.txt is the log where windows successfully boots without any issues and all drivers load perfectly fine post-revert.
I marked the last date Windows update says an update was successful without a revert in WindowsUpdate.log with:
Which you'll need to copy-find-paste-search because it is a LONG log over a megabyte in size.
I also included a System Info Dump incase it's necessary.

Do you still need help with this issue?
I must advise you that I've worked these issues for years - both online and at work (I'm a PC Tech).
The end result in most cases is inconclusive - and the only "fix" is either a System Restore or a "wipe and reinstall"
Those that we have solved have ended up being drivers for 3rd party (non-Windows) hardware (things like chipset drivers, storage controller drivers, video drivers, even networking drivers)

I'll gladly help to work on this, but don't want to foster hope that this will be an easy fix.
If you do still need help, please post this info (even though you haven't reported BSOD's):  http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/576314/blue-screen-of-death-bsod-posting-instructions-windows-10-81-8-7-vista/

Guys, I've been experiencing two very weird problems which are possibly related but I'm not sure...

First, my display started to 'twitch' from side to side, not a flicker but a movement of the entire screen image to the right and left at random intervals very quickly. This only happens with an application open on screen such as Firefox, but not with Microsoft applications like IE or Office. it is not the monitor, if I bring up the monitor menus the twitch is still going on in the background.

Second, the display has started to go completely black when I go online... The strange thing is that this only happens on the Google home page. This happens both on Firefox and IE.

Any ideas? I have no idea what's going on!

A:Weird Black Screen on Google and Screen 'Twitch'

If you're 100% sure it's not the monitor, the next thing i'd be looking at is the video adapter, aka graphics card. Make sure you have the latest drivers for the correct model installed (ie. nVidia or ATi) and that your display settings are correctly configured - correct screen refresh rate particularly.

It's strange that it only seems to happen with your net browsers as these have next-to-no bearing on your graphics - I'd check there's no other forces at play here; malware for instance. Bit of a long shot, but still a possibility.

... after 15 minutes of hanging in that weird startup screen, considering whether to hard reboot or not, it went into start repair (still there now)...

To make a long story short, I suspected something wrong with my hard drive due to a software giving me an i/o error, after some research (I am not knowledgable when it comes to computers), I ran chkdsk, when I woke up it was still running as it should be (in the process of 'replacing bad clusters' for certain files... so there was something wrong alright) and was at 28%.

After leaving my computer for ten minutes, I found my computer had gone to a black screen and seeing as I was reluctant to do a hard reboot, I waited it out and it moved to a windows safe mode startup screen... but only the big cursor and standard background was present, nothing else (see attached picture). After ten minutes it went to startup repair, which has been running for the past half hour.

What has happened during the ten minutes I was away and chkdsk was still only at 28%, why did the subsequent events unfold as they did? What can I do now??

A:chkdsk ran 8 hrs, then black screen, then weird startup screen, then..

Hello Kayron can you still get into safe mode did you say? If so go in and run sfc /scannow

SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker

if that doesn't run then maybe you have a hardware problem.

I recently did a hitmanpro, piriform cc cleaner, part of defrag, and when hitman pro rebooted my computer it now logs to a black screen when I log in. I tried doing a restore point, but nothing. The desktop and stuff shows up in safe mode but in regular mode it's just a black screen with a cursor and I have to manually start explorer.exe through task manager. What do? x-x

A:Windows 7 64 logs to black screen- have to manually start explorer.exe

Hi and welcome to SevenForums,

If Hitman Pro rebooted the PC it was because if was trying to clean some malware, right? Then I guess Hitman Pro is stuck/failing or the infection is preventing the PC to start.
If you don't have a system image backup you can restore, you can try using a rescue disk to clean your system. For example Download Kaspersky Rescue Disk 10

UPDATE: I got a dds log: - see below2nd update: I see 2 strange files on my desktop : pev.exe & ncmd.cfxxeAfter a jpeg was downloaded onto my laptop, I got a black screen after windows loaded (I could log in but thats it). the cursor would also work while the black screen was there. After following the advice of someone in the chat room here, I downloaded and ran inherit which restored the start menu and the task bar.I downloaded hijack this onto a flash drive and ran it as hs.exe but it just started and shut down with no log. I downloaded dds and ran it but same thing..it starts and then closes with no log.I noticed that when I reboot, the desktop background is not there but all the icons are. Then as soon as 'security tool' (malware) loads, the icons disappear and its just a black screen with the start menu and the task bar.I wonder if hijack this and dds run but get screwed up when 'security tool' loads. The internet (firefox) still works at all times but any other application I try, I'm greeted with a warning message from the 'security tool' icon in the task bar saying that the app. I'm trying to use is infected..and the app. doesn't work. Task manager doesn't open either.Oddly enough, I'm able to 'sneak in' and open an app like word or notepad immediately after reboot and login and just before 'security tool' loads and turns the screen black.Any ideas?!DDS (Ver_09-10-24.04) - NTFSx86 ============== Pseudo HJT Report ===============mWinlogon: Shell=Explorer.exe c:&... Ive been getting a black screen with movable cursor for weeks now. Posted over some forums about it without much of a fix. Tried a few things, even formatted and reinstalled a fresh copy of Win 7 and bought a new SSD drive for a boot drive. AND it still does it. Ive had several workarounds to get to the desktop one of which was to change the boot sequence in the bios then change it back to the boot drive and it would come up. But after a while that stopped working and I would try the repair windows way by putting in the Win 7 disc. But it would still do it the next day again. So now what works is actually when I put in the Win 7 disc in my drive for whatever reason it boots right up??? WTH? If I leave the disc out or put another disc in it does the black screen again. What is the magic in keeping the Win 7 disc in the drive even when I have the first boot device as my SSD drive with windows on it??? Clueless. I recently added a HDTV as a second monitor via hdmi, my PC monitor uses DVI (I have a ASUS 5870). Latest drivers as well. I still wonder if that could be a issue, using dvi and hdmi and/or the video driver...Anyway thanks for any input.

A:So weird! Black screen with cursor then...

This might be the video card it might be outdated or fualty.
have you installed a driver for it before the windows 7 installation?

ok, this is confusing the heck out of me.

on my screen is a black line approximately a pixel thick that runs horizontally over everything.

When I change my screen resolution (changing it from 1280x1024 to 1152x864 and back again) it disappears.

It shows back up roughly about once week in differnt places (closer to bottom, closer to top, smack dab in the middle, etc.) This has been happening for months. Doesn't affect my work all that much. I am just a little curious as to what causes it.

Anyone else experiencing something like this?

The Problem(s)

Now, I'm not a hundred percent sure that this belongs in the Vista forum, but I have this uneasy feeling that I should be blaming Vista for this since I never had this problem with XP.

I bought this computer around September and up until a couple of weeks ago, I had just about no problems (anything problematic was solved by running as administrator) until I installed the Insurgency mod for Half-Life 2. The mod would sporadically crash and send me to a black screen, as if my computer was adjusting itself back to my desktop. The problem is that the screen stayed black and if I let it sit for a while, a mysterious floating box would pop up and move about my screen. The contents of the box are:

Not Optimum Mode
Recommended Mode:
1280x1024 60Hz

The funny thing is, that's exactly what I run my computer at. I stopped playing Insurgency because of this and moved on to Call of Duty 4. CoD4 played just fine until I decided to quit the game through the main menu, at which point it would do the whole black screen -> floating box thing.

Here's where it gets worse: Since all of this started happening, I've tried rolling back my graphics drivers, completely uninstalling and reinstalling them, hell, last night I even reinstalled Vista and del... Read more

My first post here as I am totally confused as to what is happening to my computer!

I have a Dell laptop Studio 14z with 4gigs of ram, 512mg graphics, i7 processor, etc. Plenty of power for what I do which is mostly word doc, ppt, occasional photo and video editing. I usually use chrome for web browsing and avast for virus control.

Long story short, about a month ago, I came back to my laptop, moved the mouse to awake the screen and in the top left corner was a black with a blue border. I usually restart my computer and its gone, sometimes I simply ignore it, come back a few hours and its gone. I have tried Ctrl+Alt+Del and ending a few processes I was unfamiliar with but the screen remains. It is not there every time, but frequently is.

I didn't make any changes to my computer shortly before the screen arrived to my knowledge but my gmail account was hacked a week or two ago so I have gotten concerned it might be a key logger or something of the like.

Any help yall could provide would be immensely useful! Thanks a lot!

Greetings, Troubleshooting this type of problem on an "All in One" system is difficult. You have no display so it is not possible to boot in Safe Mode to check for a graphics driver conflict. Possible hardware causes could be: graphics hardware, Memory, Processor and or Motherboard Processor Socket motherboard, Power Supply. Best to have it serviced. Contact HP Service here. You'll need the correct product number. Cheers!

Hi there @bfeliciano86,  Before I provide troubleshooting documentation, I would like to take a minute to welcome you to the HP Support Community, where you can ask questions, find solutions and get help from others! I will do my absolute best to help you resolve the issue you are having with the black screen on your HP Pavilion x2 Notebook PC.  Note: please make sure that the AC adapter cable is not plugged into a power strip, surge protector, or secondary power source. It should be directly into a wall outlet. Please note remove any and all USB devices. Disconnect all non-essential devices, as these could cause some issues. As silly as it sounds, did you happen to try removing dust from the cooling areas in a notebook?Have you connected the Notebook to an external monitor or TV? If you remove the notebook battery, plug the AC power cable back into the notebook, then turn it on, does it power the Notebook? Do you have any beep codes or blinking LED lights? Have you done a BIOS reset?Have you tried performing a hard reset?Have you tried to see if you can test for hardware failures? If the computer is on, do you hear the fan running? If so, but the display remains blank, please see Computer Starts but Screen Remains Blank. If you require further assistance, I would be more than happy to help! I know it is on because the power button is on and the color is white just a solid white no blinking because before when it went out in 2015 the power button was blinking but now it just a solid color. I can click the okay button and all the other buttons to the left of the power button and they go on. My computer detects it because when I go to device manager it shows right there. I downloaded all the drivers. I tried VGA, DVI, and HDMI but nothing seems to work. If you need pictures so you can see it let me know. I even tried to factory reset it with the 10-second method and the 1-minute method but nothing works at all. Please help me I really love this monitor.Thank You.

Sometimes electrical components needs to have all power sources removed and reintroduced to work properly.  Try performing a hard reset first, if it doesn't work then we'll move to the next step.  To Perform A Hard Reset Shut down the computer by going to the Start menu and selecting shut down. (If you have no display, hold the power button down for  5 seconds); (if the computer doesn't power on, move to the next step)Disconnect the AC Adapter from the notebook.Remove the battery from the bottom of the notebook.  There will be a switch/button to eject the battery.Wait at least 1 minute with all power sources disconnected.Re-insert the battery and reconnect the AC Adapter and then attempt to power on the notebook.

My laptop oftens turn black with just the cursor, once I turn it on.  The Windows logo shows and prompts me to log in as the user but after that, the screen just turns black/blank.  I've searched this forum and found a 2012 solution but that doesn't seem to work now since I couldn't download an ISO for Windows 7 at Microsoft.  Microsoft suggests I contact the manufacturer for the ISO.  I can still access the files in the HP Tools drive of my laptop, if that helps.  I don't want to turn off my laptop now as I'm afraid the problem will occur next time I boot it up. Thanks in advance!

A:HP Pavilion TS 14 Sleekbook Black Screen

Thank you for visiting the HP Support Forums and Welcome. I have read your thread on your HP Pavilion Touchsmart 14 Sleekbook and getting a blank or black screen on startup. Try performing a hard reset. When performing a hard reset please note remove any and all USB devices, and remove memory cards from the card reader slot. Disconnect all non-essential devices. If that does not help try to turn on the computer you start to press F11 repeatedly till the menu opens. You can also do a system restore. Hope this is helpful.  Thanks.

Hi, Just bought a HP Pavilion x2 - 10-j000na (ENERGY STAR) which arrived 2 days ago. Has been working fine - and battery charge was about halfway down. Had no problems until this evening when I'm getting no response whatsoever from it. Tried plugging it in with the adaptor, and also starting it on just battery power - but screen remains black, no lights, nothing. Any clues?? :/ Thanks.

A:Pavilion Detachable - Black Screen

Hello @Yool, Welcome to the HP Forums, I hope you enjoy your experience!  I have read your post on how your notebook computer is not able to power on, even though it is plugged into the AC adapter, and I would be happy to assist you in this matter! If your computer is powering on, but there is no lights illuminating on the device, I recommend following this document on Computer Starts but Screen Remains Blank (Windows 8). Should the machine not respond at all when the button is pressed, I alternatively suggest this document: Computer does not start (Windows 8). This should help restore the display to your notebook computer. If the issue persists, please call our technical support at 800-474-6836. Hi,I wonder if someone can help me:for 3rd time in 6 month I am having the same situation: while working on HP Pavilion 17 screen goes black.OS - Win 10 64bit.When connected to external monitor - everything is fine. What more; if the screen is higlited with a powerful light (as divers torch) it is clear it works normaly. Thus, possible the matrix backlight is the issue.Laptop has already been twice send to service, only to come back working properly for some time (this time - 3 days!!!) and its OS being Win 8.1 - the original OS being bought with.I did try everything: swithc off/battery out/power cable out/push power button on for 60sec - does not help.Question: may it be this HP is NON COMPLIANT with Win10?What I did learn already is HP service is playing strange things - what I get as service description is not what HP does have in the system, and is not what I am communicating to them... Looking for help...a bit tired by this situation Piotr

After ugrading to windows 10 my laptop really messed up.  It had worked fine since 2009 except for my son replacing the hardrive and the fan had to be replaced.  I was lucky to have my 16 yr son help out but he is gone 1800 miles away.  I cannot even go back to windows 7 until i get this fixed.  I also had problems with another laptop after upgrade to 10 but after 3 days I finally resolved the problem.  The battery pack has not worked for a long time so I just always used the ac adaptor.  With windows 10 you cannot even hit a function key to go in safe mode. I cannot see anything so I was hoping I would not have to throw away now.  If anyone knows of any solutions could they please offer some advice.  I would greatly appreciate your time and effort.  Thanks so much!  Gigi8.

I have an HP pavilion dv2000. When I turn on the computer it boots, shows me the options and everything, but after the windows symbol shows, the screen goes completely black. Everything works properly if I boot it in safemode, which is how I have been using it lately. I've tried the battery trick, as well as resetting my bios settings. The fact that it works in safemode tells me its not a problem with my video card, or monitor connection. I have also run a virus scanner in safemode.... nothing came up. Any other ideas?

Have you tried changing your resolution? Or do you have a dual monitor setup?
Try uninstalling the video card in safe mode, then restart and see what happens

Hey, guys!
I have a problem with my HP Pavilion dv2025nr laptop. It is almost year and a half old and recently I noticed that it wouldn't boot up at all. It has done that before, intermittently, but it would finally boot after 3-4 resets from the power switch, like it needed to get warmed up. After last night, now it seems totally dead. And I take good care of it.

The boot looks like this:
The screen is totally black, fans are on, HDD seems to be on(?), all the indicators on top are on, no beeps occur, HDD indicator blinks 3 times(5-6 times if media present in the DVD drive), DVD-drive spins up (if disc inside).

Here's what I've tried so far:
- connecting to external monitor - no success
- battery check - tried to boot with or without it. no change.
- power supply - strange, but computer turns on by itself when I plug in the charger. I think that's not normal.
- HDD check - HDD works fine, I was able to back it up.
- DVD-drive check - read/write indicator blinks the same way and at the same time with the HDD indicator. If a disc is inserted, the blinks are five or six.

An interesting fact is that the computer behaves the same way with the RAM modules and HDD taken out of it(!!). That freaked me out! Indicators blink he same way, no beeps or noises. Nothing.
I've no idea what the problem is.

I highly appreciate your help and concern!
Thank you!

My daughter's HP Pavilion Artist's Edition laptop is continually defaulting to a black screen after booting up.
We updated the nvidia driver, but to no avail. She's running Vista Home Premium.

Any ideas how we can cure this? Safe mode doen't seem to help, I also started it without battery in. HP don't really want to know now it's out of warranty, but I see on their site there has been a recall of some similar models for a video card fault.

I don't know what else to try.

Thanks Guys

I am on the laptop right now with safemode so i don't think the video card is messed up but in the normal windows all i get is a black screen after typing in my password and logging into the desktop. 1 program pops up during that and i see it and i can even see the task manager when i pull it up. But nothing else except my mouse pointer.

Anyone have any idea what this could be?

A:HP Pavilion ze9535nr Black screen help!

Hi and welcome. Since it starts in safe mode, you might try taking startup programs out of the picture by using start, run, msconfig, startup tab.

If after removing those it starts normally, work backwards.

Good night gentlemen. I'd love it if I could get some help from you. Recently, power went out so when I tried to boot windows 7 again it told me it needed to check some files, etc. So I let it do it. Once it restarted, it showed the Initializing screen, and when it started I could see my mouse, but everything else is black. I can move the mouse around, and if I hit ctr+alt+spr it takes me to the management screen.
I thought it might be Fences or rainmeter ******* it up, so I started Safe mode up (from which I'm posting right now) and whenever I try to un-install Fences it tells me it failed because it can't access the Windows Installer service, which may happen if it's installed incorrectly. I went on linux and deleted the files but it still shows on the program management screen. Already tried booting up with last good configuration, but to no avail.
Any thoughts?

Use SysInternals AutoRuns while in SAFEMODE to disable the apps. Un-check the box.

From Microsoft TechNet - http://live.sysinternals.com/autoruns.exe

Download & save. RIGHT-click on AutoRuns.exe, "Run as Adminisrator"
