I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

computer illiterate guy here who has some problems. after one of the last windows update, my laptop shows these error messages right after it starts up, saying i can either "send error report" or "don't send". if i dont send, another error window pops up. any attempt to do anything else (ie system restore) results in another error window popping up or the computer freezing. what steps can i take to help you guys help me out? i havent installed hijackthis yet since i cant access the internet on that computer.

when i run the computer in "safe mode" and click "no" to do a system restore, another error pops up saying "system restore appliation has encountered a problem and needs to close." similarly, the same things occurs when i click "yes" to proceed to work in safe mode.

if i "click here" to see the data error report...you see something like this:

reporting details
This error report includes: information regarding the condition of windows explorer when the problem occured; .... (i believe you guys are familiar with the rest)

My husband's new (manufacturer refurbished) laptop is getting pop up message saying "a script has stopped running.  You may wait for it to run again or stop script".  He will stop script, but sometimes it does not work and the same message keeps popping up.  Is his computer infected already???

He is using a Dell Latitude D620, running Windows 7 and Intel Centrino Duo
2.00 Gb of RAM and a 32 bit operating system capable of becoming 64 bit

Security is:
Avast Premium
Win Patrol (free)
Malwarebytes (purchased)

He also has Firefox addon:
Adblock Plus
Adblock Edge
Browser Protect

My husband sustained damage to his short term memory during a biopsy a few years ago, hence my efforts to prevent ads popping up and tempting him.  He also looks up sites specializing in the naked female form, but no activity involved unless it is just moving around, if you get my meaning.  Nothing hard core and he does watch the "safe" signals on the browser results.  I also got him to remember not to click on the topics/ads on the sides of the pages he looks at.

Other than this script problem I wanted to know if there was a way to speed up the computer.  He uses Facebook and some of their games, YouTube and does searches on various subjects from history to card tricks and those mentioned above.  He complains it can take seemingly forever for things to boot up like puling up emails, watrching vids on youtube and game play as well a... A:"a script has stopped running" message frequently, sometimes locking up computer

No need to have both of the Adblockers. I suggest deleting Adblock Plus as the other blocks the same ad servers plus the ads that
Adblock Plus allows. You could delete Edge and open Adblock Plus preferences and disallow the ads that Edge blocks, too.
Browser Protect is not needed either. There are adware/ malware products of the same name but that may not be what is ailing you.
I would suggest the best Firefox add-on there is for preventing many types of malware from infecting your computer. But it does require
a small learning to use curve and it may just be a bit too much for hubby. You can try it and then decide....NoScript

Use the programs below to find and remove adware and malware. The surfing habits you mentioned are prone to picking up unwanted stuff.
I see that you have MBAM but I included the instructions for it as well.
http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php
Download MBAM from link above.
* Double-click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
* When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
* When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
o Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
o Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
* Then click Finish.
MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan.
* If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself.
* Press the OK button to close that box and continue.

I recently have been getting the Error message Windows has encountered a critical error and will close in one minute.
I do not have the Brazilian financial Active X control that became corrupted, or if I do, I cannot find it. I have Vista 32-bit on an Acer Aspire laptop. This message comes up after I login and I can either access the Internet via Safe mode w/Networking, or do a System Restore, at which time the laptop works for about two or three times and then the error message comes back.
Do I have a bug? Please help!!!!

A:Error Message 0x80070005 critical error - windows will close in one minute

I followed the preparation guide and when I tried to run dds.scr, the black screen came up really fast and then disappeared and nothing ever came up. When I tried to run RootRepeal.exe, I was able to tell it to scan, but then I never received a report. When I tried to run it again, it said that I didn't have permission, and when I tried to delete it, it said the same thing! I am the administrator...I have Vista 32bit and I am getting the error code 0x80070005 windows has encountered a critical error and will now close. I run system restore to get it to stop, but that only works a few times, and then I get the error message again.
What do I do now??

Hello there!

I'm currently running Vista on my Compaq laptop. Unfortunately (long story) my key for Avast Antivirus expired in January 09 and I was unable to input the key code until September 09, so I guess the virus found it's way onto my computer during that time.
I ran a scan after finaly inputting the key and Avast found several infected items. Some could be removed, but since that scan I've been getting the following message after starting-up the laptop:-

Error loading C:/Windows/TEMP/msxm192z.dll

Also, since the initial scan and appearance of this error message I've been having various problems -
* Laptop running slow
* Media player not running (won't open/run) - cannot play any music!
* Photo Gallery icon blank and won't open - cannot access my photos!

I've since uninstalled Avast and installed a free version of AVG. Neither seem to be able to get rid of this virus.

I also followed the advice given to another member of this forum. I downloaded Malwarebytes Anti-Malware.
This is the MBAM report from the scan (which picked up several infected items):-

Hello everyone,
I recently had a virus on my Windows xp computer (one of those ones that pretends to be an anti-virus program telling you your computer is infected). Before I had the chance to remove it I found I was unable to start up my computer. Instead of the usual user login screen I had a black screen with this message:

"lsass.exe - Application Error". The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000005). Click on ok to terminate the application

Once I click okay nothing happens, the screen just remains blank. I have tried going into safe mode (F8 key) but it doesn?t seem to work. I hold the button down but the computer just loads up like normal and goes onto the dreaded black screen.

I have done some quick research and found that the problem is either the OS is broken, or a virus is pretending the OS is broken. Either way I have no idea what to do.

Any help is much appreciated. Please note however I am pretty clueless when it comes to computers, thus please try to assume as little prior knowledge as is reasonably possible and include simple step by step instructions if you can. I apologise for my ignorance.

If you need any further information let me know. Note as I have no laptop currently I will have to wait until I am in work to respond.

Thanks in advance!

I'm having a problem with my sister in law's computer. Originally, she had that annoying XP 2008 virus/spyware, which I think I managed to get rid of with Malwarebytes' Anti Malware and System Mechanic 7. Now I have a new problem. After receiving a recent download from microsoft, upon restarting, I get the blue screen of death with this message;

STOP: C000021a (Fatal System Error) The Windows Logon Process system process terminated unexpectedly with a status of 0xc0000005 (0x00000000 0x00000000)

I can't get anywhere into Windows, I've done F2, F8, F12, everything I could think of without risking more damage since I'm not trained for this. I've booted from the system mechanic CD with the Hard Drive recovery, and while it said it found and fixed a problem, it didn't fix this one. I have no windows CD. The computer is a Dell, and it's running Windows XP service pack 2 with Explorer 6. Heeeeeelp! Other than the F keys, I can't get anywhere with this computer.

I'm not sure if I have a virus on my laptop or if there is something else wrong with my laptop, a Toshiba running Vista. I noticed a couple days ago that when I would get on the internet, I could only get about five pages in before it would completely lock up, with not even being able to get into Ctrl+Alt+Delete to restart. I would restart, it would bring up the "Windows did not shut down properly, do you wanna start in safe mood, etc... menu." I would try to start normally and same thing would happen. I ran numerous scans, Malware Antibytes, Super Antispyware, and it came up with a couple Trojans and I deleted them but the problem still happened. Then I noticed that it also was locking up when I would just be opening files or folders on the laptop, not just the internet. Then I would start getting blue screens, computer would restart and the cycle would repeat. I am not getting any bad reports from Malware or Super antispyware but the problem is persisting. Not sure if my laptop is just crapping out or if it's something else. I am writing this in safe mode with networking because the first time I tried to write it, in regular mode, the laptop locked up. It seems to be working ok in safe mode. Any help would be great!!! Thank you!

I have Windows ME. After I get off the internet, and leave my computer up, it will lock up/freeze on the desktop. I have to do a hard shut down (control/alt/delete doesn't touch it). Also my computer seems to be running slower than usual.

I have bit defender for a virus scanner/fire wall, I downloaded all the micro soft security updates, and have put on spybot S&D and ad-aware. However since yesterday ad-aware quits responding showing between 4 and 11 critical items that I can't get to in order to delete them. Spybot is still running ok and knocked off a 4 things on the last scan. I have rebooted, and ran a hijackthis log. Can anyone see if there is something causing a problem that the other systems are missing? Thanks in advance

Hi, Did you disable System Restore? Your scans may be detecting files in the RESTOR_ area...which they cannot fix. Turning off System Restore is neccessary so that you can remove all the infected files, malware etc from your Restore Points...disabling System Restore directions/info here:

http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPOR...2001012513122239?OpenDocument&src=sec_doc_nam

After things are cleaned up, you can create a new Restore Point. If you did do this already looks like I will not be able to help you....the log is fine.

A few days ago my computer started randomly locking up, then I got an Lsass.exe error 128 60-second shutdown window. I researched it on my other computer and it sounded like a variant of the sasser worm. I downloaded the necessary patches and worm removal tool, but after running it was told there was no worm on my computer. But still the Lsass error and locking up were a major problem. Finally after hours of trying to get my computer working, I decided to format, repartition the drives, reinstall Windows 2000 (and it froze up on me twice while doing so) and even flashed the BIOS. I got it up and running, installed Zone Alarm, 2 anti-virus programs, got online and downloaded critical updates and patches and suddenly the lsass.exe window appears again and shuts me down. I reboot and it locks up. I reboot again and after being on about 5 minutes, it locks up.
I'm totally lost as to what to do next.

Anyone have any suggestions?????

Welcome to TSF

My name is Billy O'Neal and I will be helping you. (Billy or Bill is fine, if you like.)
Please give me some time to look over your computer's log(s).
Please take note of the following:In the meantime, please refrain from making any changes to your computer.
Also, even if things appear to be running better, there is no guarantee that everything is finished. Please continue to check this forum post in order to ensure we get your system completely clean. We do not want to clean you part-way up, only to have the system re-infect itself. :)
If you do not understand any step(s) provided, please do not hesitate to ask before continuing. I would much rather clarify instructions or explain them differently than have something important broken.
Finally, please reply using the button in the lower left hand corner of your screen.

Hi everybody,

I am running a Windows 2012 Core server as host OS with Microsoft Hyper-V on an Intel Xeon server.

Because of a legacy application, I am running an old Windows XP machine, with all service packs and hotfixes installed.  Also Hyper-V integration services are running. Everything is running smoothly. Since Windows XP is not supported anymore, I want
to upgrade this Windows XP machine to Vista. For that, I do have a DVD with Vista Business and SP1, including a .valid license. Unfortunately I cannot install this legacy application on Windows Vista for some reason, but that's not the case.
After starting the upgrade van Windows Vista, the machine is really really slow. But that's okay, in the meantime I can grab a coffee (or two). The problems arise when the upgrade is completed. After the final reboot, an error message appears after the Windows
Vista logo (translated poorly from Dutch to English):

Cannot launch Windows This is probably caused by a recent change of hard- or software. <bla bla>.

Using the Windows Vista DVD (ISO image) I was able to launch a command prompt to see what's wrong. The file, vmstorfl.sys, is in place, so that's not the issue. A chkdsk /f doesn't solve the issue.

Luckily I have some snapshots of this Windows XP machine so I was able to revert back. However... Read more

I have read the thread listed above, but could not follow much of it. My problem appears to be the same one as that: Windows Installer can't find the file TACOR.msi to install it. It has something to do with Earthlink Total Access, but I can find no such file. I have no ability to stop the Installer itself, and this (the Installer which is constantly running - if you click cancel, it just sits there) seems to be slowing down the computer. I am not the primary user of this computer, and although I only use Firefox on my own computer, this user has gotten used to looking at her Hotmail with a shortcut which goes through IE. We have PC Cillin, and I have used it as well as their HouseCall, and their System Cleaner (in Safe Mode). None of these have found anything but a few cookies, which I deleted. After about 8 hours on my own, and with the tech from Trend, I am totally frustrated. Also, the primary user of this computer did open an email from a close relative lately, and when she did, there was an alarm not to open the email, shut down the computer, and run a scan. Of course, I didn't know this for days. Please help! (Due to work, I probably won't be back for two days) Thanks.

I don't know what "diskette" they refer to and I recently downloaded the Microsoft SP2 fix off the net, but I think this message appeared about 1 week or so after the SP2 download, so I doubt this is the problem. Download and run Spybot and Adaware. You might also get Hijackthis a free BHO finder and deleter. Also in my opinion you should uninstall SP2. You don't need it and it's trouble.

In the Disk Drive, click WINDOWS folder and in the Media folder where the Recycle Bin sound is, the logon sounds are. . .

I keep getting a random blip noise as if I'm getting an error but nothing is wrong or nothing happens, but the noise randomly occurs. The sound is the "Windows XP Ding.wav." Play it a few times every five minutes or so and you understand my torment . . . well not really . . . I'm just wondering why the sound keeps popping up.

I've run Adaware, Spybot, and HouseCall and cleared up anything that was found but I keep getting that noise, so I'm wondering if my computer has a problem that can't be detected.

Here is my log file:

My computer has completely stopped loading anything. All it says is error loading operating system. Yesterday the windows starting up logo had froze. I waited and nothing happened. So I rebooted. It came up with a blue screen stating something about error with memory and it was dumping physical memory. I figured that it needed it so I let it. It restarted on it's own. First there was the windows start up logo then it went black with this error message. I tried rebooting and pressing different buttons but nothing would work. I even tried putting the applications disk in and the gateway disk. But it didn't even recognize it. It just spun around then stopped. What do I do? Can I unplug the IDP cable to then plug it back in to restore itself?Frustrated!!!!//Mod edit to close BB code tags.//

Hey,
Whenever I log into my computer, I get an error message saying: "Cannot find 'file:///.' Make sure the path or Internet address is correct." I don't think it's a big deal, but I just want to get rid of it. I run Windows XP Professional SP 3 on a Sony VAIO.

Thanks!

A:Windows XP Error Message

Run regedit and search on the exact file name in the error. You will likely only find one reference to it, delete that key.

Any file or executable i open gives me this:Windows cannot find 'C:\(the location of the file i'm trying to open)'. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again. To search for a file, click the Start button, and then click Search. I can't do some things cause run32dll.exe is not running because this message doesn't allow it to. And for some reason when i click on my computer icon theres a new icon called Web Folders (network icon). The ONLY way to run any program is if i right-click on the file and choose Run as.. instead of Open. Then uncheck the 'Protect my computer and data from unauthorized program activity' sentence or else it won't execute. How can i reverse this and make important files like run32dll.exe run again because i can't even use control panel because the absence of run32dll.exe?

1. If you have your XP CD, go to Start, Run, and type sfc /scannow.

2. See if you have any functionality from Safe Mode (restart while tapping F8 repeatedly).

I'd like to start by thanking the team that hosts and supports this site. Awesome.

Home computer has been acting a bit unusual lately, but I'll start with one of what I hope is a simpler problem.

There is a Windows pop-up warning, that says "Windows File Protection"

Inside the window it says

"Files that are required for Windows to run properly have been replaced by unrecognized versions. To maintain system stability, Windows must restore the original versions of these files.

Insert your Windows XP Professional CD2 now."

To the best of my knowledge, this computer didn't come with a CD copy. It is a Dell Dimension E510 running Windows XP Media Center Edition Version 2002 Service pack 3. It has Pentium® 4 CPU 3.20GHz, 3.19 GHZ, 1.00GB of Ram

If I click "retry" it asks for the CD. If I click "more information", it says "possible reasons for this problem: you have inserted wrong CD, or The CD-ROM drive in you system is not functioning."

If I click "cancel" it says "you chose not to restore the original versions of the files. This may affect Windows stability. Are you sure you want to keep these unrecognized file versions?" I have no choice but to click "yes", otherwise it gets stuck in a loop asking for the CD I don't have.

Any advice?

Thanks,

Rocket

There are 2 things that just started to happen. 1. When booting up the welcome screen jumps immediately to the desk-top. Before I had to click on an icon, on the welcome screen, with my name on it, only then would the desk-top screen come up ??
2. When shutting down the computer a box pops up APPLICATION ERROR: (The system cannot end the selected task because SHADOW is not allowing it to run. Press OK to end task SHADOW or press cancel to leave it running) ??
I have no idea what this is all about.
One additional thing last week in the "My Documents Folder" Word Perfect files, Word files, Excell files, and Lotus 123 files the text all turned blue with just a few exceptions that remained black.
Thanks for the help

Have you recently removed a user account from the machine? Normally if more than one account is enabled -- and you have the "welcome screen" enabled in Control Panel > User Accounts -- then you have to select which account to log into. If there is only 1 account -- then the login is automatic.

also run control userpasswords2 -- does it have checked "users must enter a user name and password ..."?

Just what task cannot be ended in that shutdown message?

Open eventvwr.msc and look at the applications log for related errors. If you see one, double click it and view the description. Copy the description to the clipboard by using the double-paper copy icon and paste it here.

Also post a Hijackthis scanlog:

Download and install HijackThis using the "self extractor". Run it and select "do a system scan and save the log file". Then copy/paste the contents of the log to a reply

http://www.thespykiller.co.uk/files/hijackthis_sfx.exe
I don't know what's up with your document files unless you changed a setting there -- I'd suggest posting that as a separate topic in the Business Applications forum.

I took my HP laptop to a friend to upgrade it. My friend installed Windows 7 OS. Everything was fine for a while but recently,I receive an error message. The message request me to enter a product key, which I don't have.
I want to remove it (Windows 7 OS) because I can't buy the key as requested.
Can someone direct me on how to do that without losing: files, pic's, etc.
some immediate comment: no the friend does not what ir required and No, I wil not take it back to him for help. :>}

A:Windows 7 error Message

You can't really remove the OS without losing the files, but you should back up your files before doing any reinstall of windows. You can do this a number of ways, the easiest being connect an external HD, boot into windows, and copy your files. If you can't boot in to windows at all, you may have to use a bootable disk like Knoppix and gain access to your files that way.

I have tried doing a disk clean up, defrag and set my virus - spyware checker to run but all to no avail

Repair install...after developing some basis for belief that malware is not the problem..is what I suggest.

When did the problem start?

Have you tried running System Restore in XP?

Since you only mention browser transactions...have repaired or reinstalled your browser?

I have been getting the following error message on my computer:

"A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer. If this is the 1st time you've seen this stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps: Disable or uninstall any anti-virus, disk defrag or backup utilities. Check hard drive configuration, and check for any updated drivers. Run CHKDSK/F to checkfor hard drive corruption, and then restart computer".

Then there are several technical codes.

I'm not 100% sure, but I think I might have a virus. However I've been running McAfee anti-virus and it isn't showing any major viruses.

The above message has shown up at least 4 times, can someone help me out on this?

Hi, I need a little help, Ther's this computer I am working on. It has an AMD Duron 1200
processor, 96 MB DDR RAM, Maxtor DiamondPlus 80 GB HDD, SiS integrated video card,
TPeople CD ROM drive. It runs Windows 98 SE. Recently it developed problems, durin booting it displays errors messages about msnp32.dll(whatever that is). I want to install Windows XP Professinal SP 2 but I can't because both the floppy and CD drives
are ".. is not accessible. Device Is not ready" . Could the OS be the culprit? Anyone know the way to get around this? I replaced the Maxtor drive with a Western Digital
WD200 20 GB drive, but the computer doesn't boot. It displays:"Searching For Master Boot Record on SCSI...Not Found. Insert floppy disk and press any key". In the BIOS setup, there's no hard disk present in the "Select Boot Order" list, only the CD and floppy. I removed the WD200 and reinstalled the Maxtor. This time it displays something about "secondary slave" and the Master Boot Record not being found just like in the WD200 drive. Now I can't even get past the "Searching For Master Boot Record on SCSI...Not Found. Insert floppy disk and press any key". Can anyone help me out? Please? Sorry for the long thread.

I doubt that machine would be worth installing Windows XP, it would be so slow that you're better off staying with Windows 98.

Hi,

I get this error message when I turn on my computer:

Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt
C:\windows\system32\config\system

You can attempt to repair this file by starting windows setup using the original setup CD-Rom. Select "r" at the first screen to start repair.

I've tried different things in the Recovery Console, none of which have worked, and my computer is cutting out after being on for a few minutes which is making it impossible to try anything else.

It has cut out before and I've replaced the battery twice. After the third battery it seemed to be ok, but it's happening all the time now.

Any ideas as to what's going on?

Thank you!

Had been having a problem with Google Chroime that I downloaded some months ago and was working very well up to 3 weeks ago. I uninstalled and now cannot install - every time I try I get a very brief message saying cannot connect to Windows all service installer. can anybody help. Also I decided to do a system restore and its taking over an hour and is not finished - is this normal as I read somewhere it should only take 30-45 mins. Am using a HP netbook Pavilion dm1 with Windows 64bit.
Would welcome any suggestions.
