Reinstalled Windows using wrong disc - missing drivers

Q: Reinstalled Windows using wrong disc - missing drivers

Hi, yes, I did something really stupid! I was having major issues with laptop and as a last resort decided to reinstall Windows [should have been Vista]. However, I have two Dell Inspiron laptops and apparently used the wrong disc! I installed Windows XP. Now I have no internet as the Ethernet driver, and a few others, are showing errors. I looked in Device Manager etc and about 8 or 9 drivers were not installed.

Oh, and the correct Windows disc is in US with my computer wiz son, and I'm over in UK! So . . . . is there anyway to install the missing drivers? Or even get Dell or Microsoft to help me get the correct version of Windows to reinstall?

I have internet access on my mini Dell, and also on my desktop - which does have CD writer etc if I needed to download files. Or can that be done on memory stick?

Any help/suggestions would be very much appreciated. [minus the 'dumb woman' remarks!!! I've beat myself up sufficiently]

Thanks so much

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

My OS recently crashed (config corrupt or missing) and I was unable to fix it with the standard copy / repair instructions since the windows\repair\system file was missing. Recovery panel was of no help. And when I attempted to do an in-place installation, but it kept hanging when it got to the 35 minute mark. I deleted antivirus software and attempted again, to no avail. During the hanging, I was able to use f10 to get to a dos prompt, which allowed me to launch the files and settings transfer wizard. I copied everything I thought was important to a newly purchased hard drive.

One I had copied everything I possibly thought I could need, I did a new install. I was able to load Microsoft Office without any issues, and able to load AOL and connect using a dial up connection. When I attempted to set up the Verizon DSL, I ran into problems. When I use control panel to go to Network Connections - there isn't anything there. Completely empty. Verizon told me to call Dell and ask them to reinstall the nic card / ethernet connection. I also noticed that I do not have sound on the computer anymore. When on the phone with Dell I discovered they had not included the "driver and utility delldimension resource cd" when the shipped it to me, and it's no longer available.

Do you know what drivers I need to download from Dell's site and how to set up the network connections so that I can get DSL working?

Even though the CD is not available, you might try going to Dell's site to download the drivers.

Another possibility is to find out the manufacturer of the sound card and network card and download from their site.

I had a bunch of viruses on my computer and I kept getting more because one of them hijacked mcafee, preventing me from turning it back on. I tried to restore my system to an earlier date but all the restore dates were too recent so I decided to reinstall windows 7. I didnt have the disk any more so I downloaded it to a usb drive. I succesfully installed it, but when I logged in I noticed it looked completely different. The bottom bar was much larger then it was before, The screen looks zoomed in and the shortcuts are all much bigger, and when I go into control panel or computer the windows take up the entire screen and cant be made smaller, only minimized. Could I have downloaded a wrong version of windows 7? I also failed to realize that I would need to install all new drivers and was very confused when I couldn't connect to the internet. I tried to install the drivers by looking them up with the network cards ven id but it says they aren't supported on my device. Any help will be greatly appreciated as I have no clue what I am doing. If it helps I have a dell xps 8300.

Hello!

After having trouble with the Win32 heur or W32.sality virus I lost my patient and Completly reinstalled Windows XP Media center edition...

I had bought my PC from packard bell and had support, cd-backup + instructions and everything registered to packard bell, My PC Was A Packard Bell.
Then later my motherboard got trouble and crashed alot... So I eventually bought a new one.

When my pc got the virus I wanted to use the CD-backup I had taken from the pc before the motherboard was changed and also had the support of packard bell.
But the CD did not boot because "information was not valid" and I couldn't use it to reformat and reinstall my Windows XP MC edition.

So I used my student version of the CD, my other cd that would install windows media center edition and also the key for that cd.
I formated everything and left no partition so that superdangerous-virus would die.

After the installation I have no more internet connection and missing drivers installed. I can't update windows because it requires internet which I don't have on that PC. I also no longer seem to have packard bell support.

How can I get those drivers installed on my pc? I have no clue what about the names :( :( :(

I was really tired when I wrote this, hope you understand.

Every post and advice will be greatly appreciated.

I have re-installed WIN 7 on my laptop. I did not have the cd's from Dell, so I purchased and used a WIN 7 disc. After re-installing WIN 7, my internet connection was not functioning. Under Device Manager, the following had yellow warning signs next to them:

Ethernet Controller
Intel(R) Centrino(R) Advanced-N+WiMax 6250
Network Controller
PCI Simple Communications Controller.

I am assuming that these devices are missing the drivers required for their operation. I tried running Intel_My_WiFi_Dashboard_15.1.1_s64. It told me I needed to install dotNetFx40_Full_Setup. I attempted to run this program, but a lack of an internet connection prevented it from completing. I am unsure of what to try next. Any help would be appreciated.

If this has already been answered under another post, I apologize for re-posting, and would be more then glad to read the original thread if someone can post a link.

Thank you for any help you have,

Hi, I recently reformatted and reinstalled Windows XP Professional on my HP Compaq nc6120 Notebook PC. After I finished, the internet wasn't working. It says i'm connected in the lower right hand corner, but I get no IP address when I do "ipconfig" in Command Prompt.

I noticed the laptop is missing quite a few different drivers though, and i'm pretty sure these are the problem. They're under "Other Devices" in my Device Manager:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
These all have yellow !'s on them

Ethernet Controller
Mass Storage Controller
Multimedia Audio Controller
Network Controller
PCI Modem
PCI Simple Communications Controller
Video Controller
Video Controller (VGA Compatible)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I looked up my laptop on the HP website for the drivers and found it, but honestly can't make heads or tails of them. I don't know which drivers listed I need to fix the above driver issues.

Here is the link to the laptop drivers on the HP website: Here
Product: Compaq nc6120
s/n: CNU6121BQ3
p/n: PZ121UA

Hp support of course tried charging me to help me fix it. Not that I would have been able to understand the tech support guy if they did try to help (yay outsourcing).

Thanks to anyone who tries to help!

Heres what you can try go to the HP website and for your model of computer download all of the xp drivers that you are missing in the device mgr.and for future use download all of the xp drivers so that you will have them. drivers are very easy to install once downloaded. if you have another computer to use to get the drivers put them on a cd or usb flash drive and install them to the computer that needs the drivers.

I have an Asus U36SD

Last night I reinstalled windows for a clean install on windows disk
After finishing and loading up windows I have no drivers so no connection to any peripherals
I can't install them from the web because all Internet drivers are gone and I can't install from USB
Because the USB driver is gone.

Please help!! What do I do

A:Reinstalled windows. No drivers

Follow the steps in Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7.

Put your network adapter driver form the Asus Support Downloads webpage on CD or stick to install it to connect to network. http://support.asus.com/Download.asp...=U36SD&p=3&os=

Then immediately enable Device Installation Settings Option 3, run all rounds of Important and Optional Windows Updates to completion.

If wireless driver gives problems installing then use the ethernet cable which will probably load its own driver if you've enabled Option 3 in link above, otherwise import it from same page.

Windows Updates should provide most all of the drivers. After required reboots, go right back to Check for Updates again until there are no more. You can then import any still missing in Device Manager from the same Asus webpage.

I have just reinstalled Windows XP, and now I can't get on the Internet.
( I use Net Zero Dial Up for $9.95 / Month)

When I try to install the software for Net Zero, it tells me that it Can't Detect the Modem.

In the Device Manager, I see some things with a Yellow?! which are:

Ethernet Controller
Multimedia Audio Controller
PCI Input Device
PCI Modem
SM Bus Controller
Video Controller (VGA Compat.)

I would like to get the Modem to work, and then allow the internt to automatically choose and install the rest of the drivers.

So, I guess I have to find the Driver for a Dell Dimension 2400 Modem. It had a Pentium 4, and 512GB or Ram.

Can I download it on a Flash? and then Choose the Options in the Device Manager- Install From a Specific Location/ Don't Search I will choose the Driver to Install.?

Any help as to choosing a Driver and Some instruction on Installing it would be Greatly Appreciated. I think I could download it Possibly a Flash or CD if necessary.

Then do I click on the Device (Modem) in the Device Manager>Install From a Sprecific Location>Don't Install Automatically, I will choose the Driver to Install.

I see some things in the list under drivers In the Device Manager for Drivers to Choose from, but I'm not sure if there is one there for me. I did choose one that was V90 and I let it download all night and it was still loading in the morning, so I don't think it was working?

Thank you in advance for your help.

Hi,

I was having some freezing/BSOD problem with a certain very important program and I ended up reinstalling windows. I did so from a USB flashdisk but after windows was installed a lot of drivers seem to be missing. The laptop is a custom build and I don't have the cd with all the drivers since the disk is still at home, which is across the Atlantic Ocean so getting that isn't an option either.

The most important driver that seems to be missing as far as I can tell at the moment is the network adapter driver. Device Manager isn't recognizing the following devices:
- Ethernet Controller
- Network Controller
- PCI Device
- SM Bus Controller
- USB Controller

Windows Update isn't finding any drivers for those devices and I can't download them manually either since I don't know what I need to be looking for.

Any help is greatly appreciated since I've already been 2 days out of commission with the previous BSOD problem before I reinstalled windows. Let me know if you need me to supply any other information.

Thank You.

Axel

Welcome to TSF....

Since windows was re-installed the thing that has to be done is to install all of the special drivers like chipset, buss, network, audio, video and others, they can be installed in any order you wish and can be found on the system recovery disk set for the computer if it is an OEM like Compaq, Dell etc. or if you do not have a recovery disk set the drivers can be found on the manufacturers web site for either the motherboard or the manufacturer of the computers web site. You can download these drivers and burn to a CD-R and then install those following instructions to reboot when asked.

I apoligize in advance if this question is in the wrong section.

I'm a third party to this situation since my friend who did this is computer illiterate. Anyway, I think he reinstalled windows XP because his son was complaining how slow the computer was running but now all his documents and five years worth of photos are missing (he didn't back them up or even think about doing so).

He's unable to tell me exactly what he did to the computer but all his games and programs are still installed but, like I said, all his personal data is gone.

First I took the computer to my house to make sure no one would use it and overwrite any files. I've tried recuvra (found absolutely nothing) and Pandora recovery (found about 300 out of 1000s of photos).

Sorry for the long story but what I'm asking is there a more powerful program I can easily download (or even one worth purchasing) that is better than pandora, and second would it be worth getting the data professionally recovered or have I already found all the pictures that are likely to be recovered already?

There wouldn't be any magical possibility that the photos are just hiding somewhere would there?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

A:Missing pictures after Windows XP reinstalled.

Have a look in My Computer, go to Tools>Folder Options>View menu and tick to "Show Hidden Files". Further down, untick "Show hidden system files and folders". Click Apply, OK the warning and Ok your way out.

Navigate to Documents and Settings and look through the Usernames to see if one may resemble a previously used name in tghe old system. Also, check through all of the folders for unusually large contentgs. You may just find what you want. Reverse those folder options before you give the machine back - danger lurks there for the unwary.

I believe the sound card is built in, and the drivers being used are Realtek HD audio. I've installed the latest version
Realtek HD Audio 2.11 Driver

I have looked at many solutions concerning the UAA driver, which was also already installed and tried uninstalling both
then reinstalling the UAA driver first but that didn't make any difference.

Look forward to any advice given and thanks in advance!

Hope I gave you all the required information the first time round

A:Reinstalled Windows and installed all drivers, no sound anymore

Hi simsyman,

I think you should repost this in the audio/video forum. I'll ask if it can be moved.

Dell Vostro 1500.

A few weeks ago, I received a blue screen of death that would not get off my computer. I had the Windows Antivirus Pro Virus that would not go away. I am going to school tomororw and needed this off my computer. So I decided to wipe the hard drive clean with the Dell CDs that came with this purchase. I downloaded Windows XP and some of the drivers. Some of the drivers that i tried to download say they downloaded but then do not come up. Broadcom440x10/100 is saying the network cable is unplugged, I have no idea what that means and internet will not work. What can I do manually to make this work?

I posted earlier for my bf but didn't get a response and now his situation is even worse. Instead of waiting until I got there he rushed into doing everything himself. He had a bad virus, kept him from opening any applications or getting on the internet. Then he started deleting things, which finally stopped his computer from running and would get the error there were missing files. So he got a Wins XP disk from someone else to reinstall windows, again rushed into it, instead of waiting so we could use my laptop to get online and get the proper info on how to reinstall. So to make a long story short, he reinstalled it on his own, lost all his documents, photos, etc. on his computer as well as his drivers. He has no original disks for this computer, and now he can't get on the internet, I guess because that driver is missing too. So my question is, can he use a disk with drivers on it from someone else's computer? Or does he need the one's for his particular computer, which the original owner does not have. Not sure where he should go with this, besides taking it somewhere and having them fix it for several $100.

I recently reinstalled windows 7 on my samsung rv511 laptop and now it's running very slow and many features aren't working.

i've been reading forums and chipping away for 2 weeks so far. if anyone has any other ideas, they'd be much appreciated.

here are the main problems i have noticed
1. hdmi connection not working.
2. itunes tells me i don't have hd drivers installed.
3. computer generally running slowly.
4. shift keys and caps lock key often don't work (this was also an issue before reinstall)
5. 3 samsung drivers failed to install on multiple occasions.

here's what i've done so far;
1. reinstalled windows 7 from cd
2. installed all windows updates
3. installed all drivers for my model from samsung website
4. installed all windows automatic and optional updates
5. ran nvidia scan to check for updates (none needed)

i've read on seven forums that samsung computers can be very difficult to reinstall, so any advice would be much appreciated.

thanks

I had trouble with XP so after searching around the net, I decided to go for the reinstall of XP. Long story short, I ended up doing this about 4 or 5 times but it didnt solve the problem; I encountered more problems along the way (http://www.kbalertz.com/Feedback_830085.aspx < this problem; http://archive.midrange.com/cpf0000/200303/msg00037.html < this problem, explorer.exe always needing to be closed, etc.)

Well on my last try I practically lost all hope, so I think I ended up opening the Recovery Console. So I dont exactly remember anymore what happened but now I have a new install of XP, although I think all my files are still somewhere in the harddrive because it has only half the total disk space left (which is how it was, before I mucked everything up). Problem is, I don't know where they are, and I cant access some folders on C:/ too.

I need my files! Can I still do anything to salvage this?

Let me know if you need more details.

Oh, I'm probably not quite intermediate, but not quite a beginner either. Heh. Oh, and I cant do links here...yet.

Thanks.

So, here I go again with another issue with Widows 10.... Windows 10 upgrade installed fine on this now vintage laptop using an ISO image. It also worked perfectly fine in Vista and Windows 7. Maybe not a big mistake, but with some issues. Initially, the driver for the NVIDIA graphics card could not be found. Solved that by using the Vista driver, it worked fairly well. Next, after a Windows 10 update the DVD/CD drive disappeared. Not so fast to solve this time. I restored Windows 10 using the USB solution and the drive reappeared. That was fine until the very first update. Gone again. This time, I attempted to restore Windows 10 using the same USB recovery drive as before and now the Hard Drive can't be found.  Checked the BIOS and the drive is there listed.  I finally received a message that the driver is missing. I went to the support page for this notebook but don't see the driver for the HD listed there for download. Also note that the original restore DVD made from the original restore partition (Vista based) loads original restore files but when the Recovery Manager presents Error Code 0x4001100200000100A.  Says to contact HP Support.  This is perhaps related to repartitioning the hard drive when Windows 7 was installed? Not sure how to circumvent if this is the case. And, attempting to reinstall Windows 7 from a full install (not an upgrade) DVD was also unsuccessful receiving a ... Read more

A:Device driver missing for HD when windows 10 reinstalled.

It's an AMD processor and an nVidia chipset. You need the nForce driver for the 630 chipset and find the storage controller part of it after you extract it and use that for the storage controller driver.  See if this helps: http://ivanrf.com/en/nvidia-compatibility-issue-with-windows-10/

My comp keeps crashing on me. I've tried all of the trouble shooting i've found here from these forums and am still having problems. I've done about 30 fresh installs of windows in the past 6 months trying to get it to work properly. Doesn't matter if i'm running of my onboard video or my added vid cards. Doesn't matter if I run one or both RAM sticks. Doesn't matter if I run one or both vid cards. The pop up I get in the corner is what I've gone with for looking into trouble shooting. It refers to the graphics drivers crashing and then recovering. Doesn't matter if nothing is happening or not. Can sit fine for days, can turn it on and get 10 seconds out of it before it crashes. If i had any codes that it would give me I would help more on the situation. But when it crashes and doesn't recover I get no video; on either monitor. I'm getting very frustrated, this is the first time I've ever had this happen. This is the 4th computer I've built. First to involve any windows newer then XP. XP doesn't run my comp the way I would like it to. Some of the programs I use don't work with the 64-bit XP OS.

I have a Gateway MX6650 laptop that came preloaded with Media Center 2005. The recovery disc is labeled as "Gateway Microsoft Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005".

And yet, when I used it yesterday to format my hard drive, it installed Windows Media Center Edition 2002.

Also, I'm not entirely sure it's just a mislabeled recovery disc. I've used this disc once or twice before, and while I'm not 100% certain that it installed MCE 2005 in the past, I do know that I was able to download and install MCE Update Rollup 2 last time.

Yesterday when I tried installing Update Rollup 2, I got an error saying this update can only be applied to Media Center Edition 2005, which was when I first noticed that 2002 was installed, not 2005.

Any ideas?

My brother-in-law has been having nothing but trouble with his older WinXP machine, so he reinstalled the WinXP with SP2 included. Apparently, he inadvertently installed it to his back-up drive (D) rather than his main drive (C). Everything is working beauifully now. When he boots up the machine, it asks which drive he wants to boot from. He says D and off they go. The problem is that the D drive is only 5GB, of which about 850MB is left. I think he also reinstalled drivers and programs to the D drive.

Other than starting all over again and reinstalling to the C drive this time, are there any other options?

Vanessa

A:Reinstalled XP on wrong disk?

That would be the option that makes the most sense. Moving the installation from D: to C: is very difficult, and usually results in you reinstalling anyway.

Hello I'm new to the forums.  I have a question concerning my missing Windows 8 disc.  My laptop came preloaded with Windows 7 Pro and it came bundled with Windows 8 via DVD.  I was looking to restore my laptop to factory state, then reinstall all Windows updates but I am missing my Windows 8 Pro disc.  Is it possible to download the Windows 8 and 10 again without the Windows 8 disc? The reason I'm doing this is because Windows 10 won't update to the anniversary update. Thank you Rick

One question I have is are the device drivers included on the windows 7 disc? I'm not sure I have a device driver disc let alone knowing what drivers I need. Any help would be appreciated. I use windows xp if its of any importance.

A:Device drivers included on the windows 7 disc?

Hello Zephyr, and welcome to Seven Forums.

Windows 7 will usually only contain generic drivers and sometimes the correct ones for devices. Sometimes Windows Updates, if set to install updates automatically, will find and install the correct drivers for you as well.

You can also download Windows 7 driver versions directly from the device's manufacture website to install.

If you could fill out your system specs, this will help more. What brand and model is your computer?

My Acer Aspire laptop quit working several weeks ago and I have been playing around with it for several weeks trying to get it to work again. It kept getting stuck in the windows repair screen, and despite several attempts at restoring the system or using the system recovery screen I kept getting the repair screen.

However, I turned it on today and I got a message that I had not received before. It said: File:\windows\system32\ntoskrnl.exe
status: 0xc00000e9
Info: Windows failed to load because the kernal is missing or corrupt

If you do not have this disc, contact your system administrator or computer manufacturer

Of course I called Acer to ask for a windows system recovery disc and because my computer is no longer under warranty they gave me the run around.

So, does anyone know what this message means and where I can get a disc with this missing file so that I can reboot my laptop? Any help would be appreciated.

The laptops hard drive is probably failing... You might be able to purchase a Windows 7 or Windows 8 install disk. Windows 8 is being offered for $39.99 using the Windows 8 Upgrade Advisor or:
http://www.microsoftstore.com/store/msstore/html/pbpage.Windows_8_Pro?WT.term=+windows +8 upgrade vista&WT.mc_id=pointitsem_Microsoft US_google_5 - Windows 8&WT.medium=cpc&WT.campaign=5 - Windows 8&WT.content=

Trying to re-install Windows will tell you if the hard drive is bad or not

If you buy a computer with the operating system installed it should come with a copy of the installation disc............. This recovery disc is for the birds.   This is why I will never buy a computer that doesn't offer a copy of the installation disc.  Dell is now just as guilty.  And if Cyberpower is the same, I'll just order my PC without operating system and buy my own copy and install it. That is all.

Hello, Welcome to the HP Support forum. HP computers which come with Windows preinstalled on them have built-in recovery partitions. HP does the same as most other O.E.M. vendors and PC makers. The recovery partition is a special partition stored on your HDD which can be used in tough times when you experience issues with Windows or you just want to reinstall Windows (restore to factory default condition).HP offers you the ability to create original recovery disc(s) or USB recovery media for the PC.As a Windows user, you can also create system images of your entire HDD which can then be used to restore your PC to the date/time of the system image. HP also offers original recovery media for the very rare cases when the above didn't happen or was not possible. These are usually cheap and cost around 27 USD (for America) or 33 pounds or euros (in EU) Hope this helps.
