I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi All,

My ethernet port isn't working. I am running Windows XP on an Inspiron E1505. When i try to use my LAN, I cannot because my computer says that the "Network drive is unplugged". Not really sure what's going on; I'm pretty sure it's not the cord or modem since I have another computer that I able to run on the same LAN. I tried to use the troubleshooter to solve the problem, but nothing really came up. What strategies shoudl I try? Thanks!

just noticed my Vaio ethernet port isn't working. it says the adaptor is working normally, but when I plug in an ethernet cable is says the cable is not plugged in. I tried it with two different cables that work elsewhere.

I wonder if the laptop ethernet card is faulty?

Anyone got any ideas to try?

I only ever use it to hard connect the router during setup, so it could have been out of order even before my Win7 to 8.1 upgrade.

Probably so if you never bothered to install the LAN drivers after upgrading.

I have one of these motherboards GA-890FXA-UD5 in my main PC. And one of the Ethernet ports will no longer connect to the router. It was working fine the other day so I'm not sure what?s happened. The port that will not connect to the router is still flashing orange and green once a cable is connected to it, so does this mean that it?s still functioning okay? If I swap the cable over to the other Ethernet port on the board it connects straight away.
Any ideas?

does sound a little strange. do u have diag in bios for ethernet, that can tell u simple things like cable length and other details.

very easy try a live CD (easiest is ubuntu) see if u get a IP and all the reset. its gd that u have a light on the port (or on ur switch/router on other end when plugged in)

Hey guys, sorry my first post has to be a question, but by reading through I feel like I have come to the right place. First off I have a basic understanding of computers, (I get some of the common sense stuff) so please keep this in mind. We have 4 Emachines desktops running Windows 7. 3 of the 4 use a Cisco wireless adapter USB to get on internet through our Netgear router. Sorry if I'm using the names like I'm advertising for them, just don't know how much difference knowing brand to brand makes. Anyways one of the desktops USB just stopped working, it showed up in the device manager when you would plug something in but it could not read off of it. I tried multiple portable drives and it the USB wifi adapter quit working. After a few hours I somehow figured out that if I brought the desktop and plugged it into a ethernet cable it would get online. I then performed a Windows update and it fixed the USB's. It done that twice over the period of a week. Both times a updat fixed the problem. I say all that to say Sunday, the one computer that is hardwired to the router by Ethernet cable quit working. The difference is the USB's all work fine, but I believe there is something wrong with the Ethernet port. Basically the same scenario one day its fine next it's not. I've check for updates but it say there is none. I have changed ethernet cable between them, tried swapping port with the cable. Also I swapped other computers to the same ports, they got on... I'm running Win XP and using Bt broadband (not wireless). Everything was going fine on Sunday night but when I turned the computer on on Monday morning I had no 'data' light on my router, called Bt did all the usual crap like changing the ethernet around and rebooting the router.

I then used a different ethernet cable and a netgear router and I was still not getting the light to show that ethernet was connected - nor do I have an orange light at the back of the computer.

Windows is telling me that the local area connection is unplugged. When I uninstall the ethernet (Sis 900-based fast ethernet adaptor) Windows finds it again and successfully reinstalls it and tells me it's ready to use.

I am online through a usb cable from my router and my boyfriend's xbox 360 is connected to the router through an ethernet and it's working so it's definetely my computer. I have downloaded new drivers from the Sis website and installed them but it still hasn't solved the problem.

A few times last night when I turned on my computer I have had to run it in safe mode because running it on the last known good config just brings up a black screen. It has been suggested to me that this could be a registry problem? If so do I need to reinstall windows? I had a virus about a week before this all happened.

I am attempting to connect to the internet with a broadband connection after reinstalling Windows. It also has a fiber optic circuitboard installed, but my router does not support it, so I can't do anything with it.

Reinstalling Windows frequently does not the drivers for things like the Ethernet/Network adapter, have to download drivers for it then install.

You might also need to look in the BIOS to see if the Ethernet is Enabled.

I received my new XPS 15 earlier this week and am trying to get the USB-C port to work with Ethernet. At first using the TB16 I could not get video or Ethernet to work. I went through all the suggestions I could find and as a result I have updated my bios and my drivers (all downloaded using WIFI). The video through the TB16 is now working, but with either the TB16 or the DA200 adapter the Ethernet does not work properly. It says it is connected but response on my network is deadly slow and I can't connect to the internet at all. It is the same for both devices. It won't finish booting if I have it connected on a reboot/power up. Not being able to connect to the internet makes it difficult to use Support Assist.
One thing I have noticed (which may be the way it is intended) is that in the device manager if I don't have anything connected I don't see the device listed. Once I plug something in it shows up.
I really need some help with this!

A:Ethernet port in wall not working

Hi spinksy,
Are you sure that's an ethernet port? It could be a socket to connect a wired landline, in which case an ethernet cable plugged in there will be useless. If it IS an ethernet cable, then try connecting a friend's laptop there and see whether it works; if it doesn't, then it's probably an issue with the socket.

My area experienced a power outage last night during a thunderstorm. My computer is plugged into a surge protector, but my modem is not, and I'm using a wired connection. When I got home from work, I discovered that not only did the power outage knock out my internet service (something on the ISP side) but it also did something to my ethernet port.

I can see the device in the BIOS, and in the Device Manager, and also in Network Connections, but no matter what I plug into it, it just says "network cable unplugged". I definitely have a cable plugged into it and into my modem (which is on and working, just not connecting to the internet), and I know that the cable is fine (I tested it for continuity, and I tried a different cable). When I plug something in, the lights that normally indicate activity (or at least the existence of a cable) don't light up, so I'm a little worried.

I realize that a surge from the power coming back on might very well have fried the circuitry, but I'm confused because (knock on wood) nothing else appears to be damaged in my computer, and the modem itself appears perfectly fine (with the exception that it won't connect to the internet which, like I said, is due to a problem with AT&T's lines). Is there some diagnostic that I can run or something I can do to verify the integrity of the ethernet port? If I look at the motherboard itself, would it be possible to see any potential damage?

I would think that i... Read more

I am having trouble with my custom build computer. It was all working fine, then I started having some troubles with it so I figured it was time to reinstall windows. After that the hard drive didn't work at all, so I found an extra used the boot and nuke, then used acronis and it worked, I booted up Windows 7 (I also have vista just in case) and it installed fine. I get to the windows screen extremely happy, (took me a week to get my computer working again) then I look and I have no internet. Says the drivers aren't installed, so I insert my motherboard drivers and still nothing. Well today I finally gave up, I went into best buy and told them I needed the driver (figured that was the problem) they couldn't get it either, he figured it was windows 7 so he gave me the driver for vista 64 bit and sent me on my way. Got home, reinstalled with vista, run the driver, still nothing, try my mobo driver, still nothing. I gave up, so now I post here hoping someone can help me.

Hey guys, I'm a pretty advanced computer user but I've run into problems, here's my quick story

I had an old computer so I put Ubuntu 7 on it, well yesterday I decided it was finally time to upgrade to Ubuntu 8, which turned out to be a disaster because the graphics card doesn't work very well with Ubuntu 8. So I decided to bite the bullet and install Windows XP SP2 on it. The computer is connected to the internet through an ethernet port hooked up to a router. However Windows CAN NOT realize that there is an internet connection and will not set up the Local Area Connection like it normally does. Now does this mean that I need to get drivers for my motherboard and stuff like that? Since I don't have internet on my windows machine, I'll have to download them to this computer, transfer them by means of Flash Drive, correct?

Also, how would I be able to find out what drivers I need? Any help is much appreciated! Thanks!

Seems that my Cisco WRT54G2 is half dead, he connects both cable and wifi, transfer files between PCs it normally, but the router does not connect to the Internet by modem. When I connect the PC directly into the cable modem, it works.
Does only the router port that connects the modem burned? All other ports function properly.
I tried to update the firmware on the router and was successful, but the problem is still the same. The modem looks normal, only the wireless signal it has problems, but this crap Motorola has problem of wireless signal since arriving.
Please anyone has an idea, I'm grateful, I'm almost buying another router, just want to know if this is salvation before throwing $ out.

A:Cisco WRT54G2 only Ethernet (modem) Port Not Working

I was able to speak with staff support from Cisco.
It's a problem somehow common.
First, to test if the router has a problem treasury, just pick up the network cable and plug one end into the other ethernet port 1, then 2, etc.. If all of them light up, your router is alive, is just setting or update only. In my case just replace the latest firmware solved the problem.
Hope that helps anyone who has the same problem.

I'm experiencing a strange problem in my new apartment. This has not happened before and it's not really a system breaking problem, just a hassle. I have two ethernet ports on my motherboard and I'm connecting directly from the wall to my computer. When I start-up my computer, I will not have internet access, but I can simply switch the ports and it will work. It won't work if I unplug it and plug it back into the same one.

Now if I turn off my computer, leaving the ethernet cable plugged into the new port, and then turn my computer back on, it will have the same problem and I will have to switch the ports again. After which, it will work properly. Is there some reason to why it is doing this? Is there any way to fix this?

Let me know if there is anything else I should include here.

A:Strange Ethernet port problem (not working on start-up)

Try opening Device Manager and on the properties of the network ports, turn on the power saving features. Also, in the BIOS, disable any WOL features of the network adapters.

It sounds like they expect the connection to go truly dead or the connection times out.

So here's my issue I recently installed Arkham City on my computer played it for a while, tried google chrome, gave me a corrupt profile error or something (internet still worked and was connected at the time) restarted my computer and now it's telling me there isn't an ethernet cable connected to my computer.

Here's what I tried so far:
-Uninstalling and reinstalling the driver
-Updating the driver
-Using the network troubleshooting for windows 7
-Doing a system restore before I installed the game (gave me an error saying could not complete restore)
-Currently scanning my computer in safe mode with networking (seeing if that might work, doesn't) with malewarebytes
-Unplugged and replugged the router and modem
-Checked the router on another computer to see if there's a connection (there is none)
-Checked the router to see if there is a light in the port connected to the ethernet, it's blinking at a very slow a steady pace, unlike the ones around it which are solid green lights
-Tried the ethernet cable on another computer, works fine.

So I'm at a loss, I feel like it's a software or router issue, but I'm unsure of what to try.

Gigabyte GA-MA790X-UD4P
NETGEAR router WNDR3700

A:No Internet Connection/Ethernet Port Lights are not working

Well; even with surge protectors; it is possible the ethernet card took a minor hit. But one thing you could try is to completely uninstall the ethernet adapter from the device manager, reboot, and let windows re-detect it and reinstall the drivers for it; that way hopefully there will be a fresh install of the adapter. Give that a shot and see what happens.

Hello all.

I have a problem with my ethernet port on my workstation.

The computer crashed so i reformatted it with a fresh install of WinXp Pro.

Here are the system specs:

Symantec Endpoint Protection
Windows Firewall
Service Pack 3
Network User - Logged on as Administrator on Network Domain
Internet comes from modem to 16 port switch to workstation. all other stations work fine (even with SP3)
2.4 Core 2 Duo
2 gb ram
Asus P5945GC mobo

Before, the internet was working before I reformatted it. Now I cant connect to internet, network or anything else. The network cable is unplugged icon is on at the bottom right corner of the screen. I have tried numerous versions of the ethernet driver, and nothing helps. I have tried setting up a manual connection for broadband connection and nothing works.

i am assuming it is a software problem, because nothing physically happened to the ethernet plug or port. I even tried plugging in a different ethernet cable into the pc and still nothing.

I am thinking it might have somthing to do with SP3 or some kind of setting not allowing it to be used. I checked Device Manager, it is working properly and enabled.

Im stumpted, if anyone can help, I would appreciate it.

A:Integrated Wireless Controller/PC Card Adapter/Ethernet port stopped working

Sounds like your motherboard is rapidly dying.

If the ethernet controller (or adapter) does not show under Network Adapters and is not in Other or Unknown devices with a warning or error message check in the BIOS (Setup) to see if it somehow got disabled. If it is already enabled, or doesn't show there, see my first paragraph.

When the ethernet controller is defective it can prevent other integrated and/or PCMCIA networking cards from working. When this happens sometimes a USB adapter will work.

I noticed that the light on my ethernet port is solid orange, but usually it is green, and I've tried to do a virus scan to check if that might be the problem, but I doubt it since I haven't accessed any pages I don't usually visit in a while and it didn't find any viruses.
I have had some problems with the ethernet port before, but nothing that was permanent, I have experienced that my computer has had connection problems while everyone else in the house have had no problems, but after waiting a bit it suddenly reconnects and has worked just fine for many many months, and I've only experienced this pr... Stupid me...I was walking away from my Lenovo y570 and the ethernet cable got caught up around my leg, so I yanked it out of the PC. The metal thingy was busted so I pushed it back and put it in place with a pair of toothpicks. However, the ethernet cable goes out just enough to disconnect me. Can I buy only that metal part, if that's in fact the issue why my cable goes out just a little? I saw just a litle plastic thing that broke off too, is that the thing that keeps the cable locked (can I improvise and how)?My job is on the internet, so it brings the food on my table, please dear people, tell me if there's anything I can do? (HELP)

My ethernet port has been not been working for a few months. I go to my networks and there is no ethernet adapter listed...only a wireless adapter. Also, it does not show up in device manager. I reinstalled the driver and then restarted my computer. My ethernet port worked for a little bit, but when I used my computer the next day it did not work, and the ethernet adapter was no longer in device manager. Anyone know what's up?

Original problem is intermittent motherboard RJ-45 Ethernet socket plug,

I recently purchased a ( made in China ) CN008L USB to RJ45 Adapter dongle which came in the box with a mini CD. The software on the CD does not list WinXP 32 and the instructions ( what little are in Chinese ). The dongle is compliant with USB 1.0, and 1.1, and 2.0.
So theoretically it should work to use a USB port on the computer to connect to the old D-
Link DSL-300i ADSL Ethernet Modem thereby bypassing the need to use the intermittent
motherboard RJ-45 socket!

I downloaded upgrade drivers to allow for win XP 32 setups and downloaded the drivers but
no luck so far.

Is there any reason that I should not be able to setup and run PPPOE or other software over
the USB interface in stead of the RJ-45 Ethernet port. You people should have someone there with that "savoir faire".

To date I have not managed to find PPPOE software that pre-selects USB channel rather than RJ-45.
The setup for my wireless TP-Link 54 Mbps is connected to the USB port and works well but I did use setup disks specifically designed for that product.

Here is my situation,
I own a Lattitude E7450, and needed to connected two displays to it. I went ahead and bought the Dell E-Port Plus Advanced Port Replicator with USB 3.0, since it has 2 DVI ports on the back. It shows it is compatible with my laptop.
I set up my dock, connected my laptop, as well as both external monitors. Only one monitor shows a duplicated desktop. When I go into the display settings, I cannot see any existence of another external display being connected.
All of my drivers are up to date, restarted laptop many times. Pretty bummed out.
Anyone have any solution/knowledge to this?

I recently started using the E-Port Plus Advanced Port Replicator with my Latitude E7450, but the headphones are not working. Sound comes from the laptop itself, even when the headphones are plugged into the dock or laptop. The headphones work with other devices, and the laptop works with the headphones when it is not docked.

Hi could someone please tell me if there is an ethernet port on the HP stream laptops?  if not which laptops have an ethernet port.  I will be connecting wirelessly to my internet, emails etc and need an ethernet port in case I am unable to do this wirelessly, so before I purchase wondered if someone could help.. I will only be using for internet shopping browsing and emails whilst away from home.  Many thanks

Hi. What is your HP stream. No, many laprops now don't have Ethernrt port even normal 15" laptops. That why I have to buy something like       http://www.officeworks.com.au/shop/officeworks/p/d-link-dub-1312-usb3-0-to-gigabit-ethernet-adaptor-... for my machines. I did not buy from the above shop but ordered from Amazon in the US and save me over 20 bucks for 2. Regards

why is it that the Ethernet port fails to recognize the Ethernet cable yet I can get a wireless connection? meanwhile there is an Orange light on the Ethernet port.

A:ethernet port

Check the ethernet cables. Try another ethernet cable. Check the ethernet plugin in the back of the machine for bent or broken pins. Go to the manufacture of your machine and see if there is drivers for the NIC adapter (Network Adapter). Did this work before? What has changed on your system before this issue occurred?

Hi All -I just decided to get my Z51-70 a direct Ethernet connection to utilise higher broadband speed but the cable I bought does not fit in the port. The plastic housing is literally too big for the size of the port on my laptop. I bought a RJ45 CAT6 Ethernet LAN Patch Cable. Any suggestions?

You've stated the problem now, can you provide some detail? Do you reboot nightly? What are you doing when it goes out? Are we talking wire or wireless?

I have a Sony Vaio laptop (product # VPCSA25GX) and my ethernet port does not work. My laptop does not recognize that a cord is attached. I have tried multiple cords and my internet is working fine (modem/router work fine and roomates are able to connect via ethernet cable and WiFi). I recently had my computer repaired, had to have OS reinstalled due to some issue involving RAID memory issues among other things (what I was told by the person who fixed it). I'm new to the site, so let me know what information is needed. Thanks in advance for any help.

Welcome to the site Southhound7.

I hope that whom ever installed your OS remembered to install the drivers. Drivers are the software that control the hardware on they system.

You will need to go to Sony's web site and download them. Go to my computer right click and select manage. When the window come up look on the list on the left look for device manager and select that. Do you see any yellow explanation marks or red x's.

Most systems come with a hidden partition with the system recovery installed on it which would of installed the entire system back to factory.

I cannot recall the last time my ethernet port worked. It hasn't really been an issue as I've been able to connect wirelessly to my home network but now I need it fixed.

I am using a dell vostro 3450. No lights come on when an ethernet cord is plugged in, nor is the port listed in device manager. I briefly looked through BIOS on startup to see if it had been disabled, but I am not too familar with navigating BIOS and either couldn't find it or it wasn't listed there either.

Any help would be greatly appreciated,

It's probably dead. Why not just get a USB ethernet adapter? Or if a desktop with a spare PCI slot a PCI ethernet adapter.

If someone has a sec, may I trouble you to look at the attached diagram from my Dell manual?I'm about to buy a printer that connects to the computer via Ethernet port. Do I have an Ethernet port? I don't see the word "Ethernet" on this diagram, so am guessing the port goes by another name.
In 22 years of computing, this is my first encounter with an Ethernet cable!Kind thanks.

A:Do I have an Ethernet port?

Yes, it's #3 on the back view.  That said, it's unusual to connect a printer by Ethernet - more likely, the printer AND computer connect separately to an ethernet switch or hub (or wall port).
