Missing Operating System error on Acer PC

Q: Missing Operating System error on Acer PC

The lame recovery cd they provided only offers me the option to format and restore everything and lose all data on hard drive.

I would appreciate any ideas. Thanks.

Preferred Solution: Missing Operating System error on Acer PC

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hey all! I am pretty new to this kind of Win7 issues, so I hope some of you will be able to help. Story goes...

After few hours of gaming the computer died. (It happened right after switching keyboards.) Now, on every setup BIOS(?) comes up with list of options (F2 enter BIOS, F11 boot options, F6 Flash etc.). After that a black screen with error message comes up: Missing Operating System.

I tried rebooting from USB (since I have no disk-drive) and I keep on getting the answer: Error Loading Operating System.

Any ideas?

A:Missing Operating System/Error Loading Operating System

All unlikely, but possible - (a) your HDD died. (b) your bios became corrupted (c) your HDD boot sector became corrupted (d) your HDD partition is corrupted.

Does the drive spin up when you switch on (feel it)?
Check the bios to see if the HDD is reported correctly and is at the top of the boot order.
Find a bootable CD - an OS installer, or create Easeus partition manager bootable CD http://www.partition-tool.com/personal.htm and boot from it. What does the HDD look like with Easueus?

After that i set my usb Primary device in BIOS Still it says Missing Operating System

A:Missing Operating System Error,

You need to boot the installation media and not the hard drive. Once booted use the Drive Options pictured in Steps 6 and 7 of Clean Install Windows 7 to delete all partitions, create and format new as you wish. Ignore the small boot partition it creates, install Win7 to first partition.

I currently upgraded from Windows XP to Windows Vista Home Premium edition via their website. I downloaded the new operating system with the upgrade. I do NOT have it on disk. After about 2 days of running it, I turned my computer on first thing in the morning, and the error message came up saying "Missing Operating System". I have tried everything! I went and checked the BIOS settings and everything seemed normal. I have no idea what happened! I can't make any boot floppy's b/c my new Compaq doesn't come with a floppy. It won't let me go into the recovery console (F10) but it will let me go into Setup (F1). F5 and F8 options are not available as options either. I have a Dell Inspiron that won't start. It says it is missing its operating system.

Using the Windows 7 DVD that came with the machine I went through the repair Windows procedure 3 times. The first time it searched for restore points of which there are none because the machine has Rollback Rx installed instead. It then restarted with no change. I went through the same process but this time it said it had repaired Windows however; restarting gave me the same missing OS message. On the 3rd attempt it displayed the restored OS as being on D:\. I ran the diagnostic tool and it said no errors were found. Restarting gave the same error.

How can I get the machine to boot from D:\ or move the OS back to C:\ please?

How did that happened? Did you format your hard drive or something? How many drives do you have maybe its installed on another one.

If all else fails the only thing left to do is to do a system recovery or factory restore, if you are looking for a clean start then follow this guide: Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7

My computer was built by my friend and we've had it for 3 years without problems. I have Windows Vista Home Premium, with service pack 1 and updates installed. I generally use Firefox but have IE installed also.

About 3 months ago the screen would go black (and even purple once,) sometimes when I was watching a movie. The sound would still play, but screen would go black, so I had to shut it off manually. At some point, one day I turned it on and instead of going to the Windows log-on screen, it went to a black screen on startup that said: Missing Operating System. We wiped the C drive and re-installed Windows and all my programs.

It seemed fine for a month, but then I started to get error messages and web-pages freezing again. We dusted out the computer and installed some updated drivers for our video card, and a week went by and I thought we were in the clear. But nope, the error messages and freezing started up again.

Here is what happens: When I have a few Firefox windows open and then go to close one or two of them, the computer freezes and then I get several error messages that are all similar but with different application error names. (for example, the error names would usually be things like: explorer.exe, nvxdsync.exe, dwm.exe, mswin.exe, hpqbam08.exe, sidebar.... Read more

Hi all,

Installed a DVDRW drive but comp crashed when installing some software and it stopped detecting my Primary Master and Slave drives. I've fiddled about with the Master and Slave configs and have managed to get it to detect my HD and DVDROM.

I've unplugged my DVDRW and my small HDD and am trying to get windows to load up.

After using FDISK /MBR an rebooting, I get "Missing Operating System".

Tried installing Windows XP after formatting, it seems to have installed but it's not loading.

Current config:

Slave: Pioneer DVDROM (not the DVDRW)
Master: Seagate 80GB (C: = 15GB) & (D: = 61GB).

D: has files on there that I'd like to recover. Too big to put on floppy.

I've run a search for similar problems and tried some of the solutions but no good. Any ideas? Thanks

For reference: Acer Aspire v15 Nitro running Windows 8.1

I made a mistake. A friend gave me a USB drive and I wanted to format it, but the USB was actually broken and didn't show up. What I thought was the USB was a drive with a name containing the word "Pushbutton". I formatted it and the computer ran fine until I restarted it. Upon restart, I am getting the error:

"Missing operating system.
No bootable device -- insert boot disk and press any key"

I've been working on this problem for a little while and at first suspected I messed up the MBR. I loaded the windows 8 startup disk on a USB and ran various repairs to no avail (including bootrec stuff in the command prompt).

I have no idea what I did. I know all of my files are still in there somewhere. I didn't do anything to the main disk or partition. I think I formatted some kind of partition that is related to booting up the OS.

I'm not sure if this changes anything, but my hard drive is full disk encrypted using VeraCrypt.

A:Error: "Missing operating system. No bootable device"

I don't know about VeraCrypt, but with MS encryption, you need an extra BOOT partition that is not encrypted. Perhaps that is what got clobbered.

If you have access to another working PC, then you should download the Minitool Partition Wizard Boot CD and make a CD or USB stick from it. To make a USB stick, you'll also need to download RUFUS and use that.

Once you have that, boot your machine and see what partitions are on the drive.

Hey folks, thanks a ton in advance for any help or suggestions given. I guess my old account was deleted, but I previously joined/donated for some help received. Regardless, I have a friends Acer laptop I am attempting to help her restore as usable. Acer Aspire 6930Intel Core 2 Duo Processor T5800 (2.0GHz, 800MHz FSB, 2 MB L2 cache)1244MB Mobile Graphics Accelerator 4500MHD3 GB DDR2320GB HDDWindows VistaWhen you boot it, it pretty much stays in the boot screen.....does no more. She got the computer from Best Buy, and they set up 3 recover disks. When you try to run the 1st of 3, I select the language....then a prompt comes up to ask me what I want to do. As you can see below, I cannot select "restore from backup". I then click to "restore to default" and then I get this error message......I searched the error message, and found others who've experienced the exact same issue. What they discovered is that the computer would not utilize the recovery disks if there was an existing partition. So the folks with the same problem as I, downloaded the Ultimate Boot Disk to recover their computers. When I do that, I got a message in BIOS saying "No operating system found".This whole message....I can follow directions very well, and I am a fairly familiar with computers....but not enough to solve this one. I appreciate anyones time thrown in to try and find a fix or a final resolution (if the HD is fubar). Darren

I have and Acer Aspire One that has a big problem. This is my 12 year old daughter's computer. She got it for Christmas in 2011. By June 2012 it was really slow and bogged down due to cookies and any other number of things she had going on. A friend was over and tried to do a system restore to get it back to factory settings. In the middle of the restore the computer shut off because the battery died. Our luck that it wasn't plugged in. When you turn it on now it just goes to a black screen and does nothing. I have taken it to box stores with so called technical support and was told that we had to get a new operating system. I don't want to pay more for an operating system than the computer itself. So I just went to purchase another one. As I was putting it in lay-a-way the check out guy said that I could just down load a free operating system and install it. That I could use the product key that is on the computer already. I get by with computers but don't know where I could find it to download and make sure I got the right one and that I was doing it right. It seems like something I could do with just a little guidance. I know that it came with Windows 7 Starter.

Any help that you could give me would be very appreciated.

If you need more from me let me know and I will try my best to get you the info.

A:Acer Aspire One Operating System Issues

You definitely do NOT need to purchase a new operating system.

You can legitimately download a Windows 7 ISO, burn it to a DVD, install it and then activate it using the product key on the COA sticker affixed beneath the laptop.

Follow the instructions here to do that - it provides a link to download the Windows 7 ISO, and all the steps you need to perform. Read it thoroughly before starting.

Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7

If your daughter still has files on this computer that haven't been backed-up, then use this to copy them off the laptop before re installing Windows 7.

Hi guys.

I will apologise now i really am a noob here ive done a lot of researching on forums and found some great help so full respect for all you guys you really do know your stuff.

I have recently purchased an Acer Aspire Z5610 it is a second user buy.

Straight away i noticed that it just wasnt working right which is half to be expected im sure when buying second user equipment.

After doing some research on forums i came to the conclusion of erasing the C drive and reloading the OS with the system restore disc i created on the computer.

I was getting all the way through and it was failing and suggested that there was a fault on the memory disc. Ive managed to get into the back of the computer and removed the RAM sticks and tried loading with just 1 and with both and all the different combinations of being in different ports.

Now it gets to 2% and just stops loading altogether its just sticks at wherever its stopped.

Im lost for answers now which is why i have decided to post.

Can anybody offer any suggestions please?

Many thanks in advance.

A:Acer Laptop wont start operating system now!!!!

Aparently you have tried to make the laptop as dry as possible, but things can still be fried inside it. I am afraid the latter is the case and that you will have to opt for a waranty claim, although water damage usually isn't covered in that.

To recover the data I suggest to remove the harddisk and put it in or connect it to another laptop... but bottomline is that I think your laptop is lost :-(

I am using the Acer eRecovery option to recover Windows 7 operating system. However when it reaches point of installing Office 2010 it freezes and does not move forward. Wanted to know if there is a way to get past this , even if I can bypass the Office 2010 install and complete the Windows OS install.

A:Acer eRecovery management for recovering operating system

I don't know if there is a way to get past the stalling, but you should be able to do a clean install of Windows 7 without using the eRecovery partition if you have a valid Certificate of Authenticity sticker containing a 25 character Product Key.

You'd end up with a fresh Windows installation without any of the other stuff Acer may have included--no Office, no extra stuff. Just Windows 7.

You'd need to download a Windows 7 ISO and burn it to a DVD or get it onto a USB thumb drive if you don't have a DVD burner.

I tried windows repair feature by booting from the disk, but when I get to the window where i select the operating system to repair, its empty. Drive C, where the operating system is, is not showing.

What type of hdd do you have. For example if you have a Seagate drive, there is software you can run to do a diagonostic on the hdd before the operating system boots.
This would be a good idea, especially if you were having same issues when Vista Home Premium was installed first.

Do you have more than one hdd installed. If yes, make sure in BIOS settings, the proper drive is selected for First Boot. And better yet make sure its the only drive attached when booting.

For the 2nd time in three days, when I attempt to boot, I got the error message "Missing Operating System". When I first contacted Hewlett Packard, they told me that the MBR was missing or corrupted and that I would have to reinstall everything.

I did!

Now, two days latter, I get the same message ... from the computer and from Hewlett Packard.

I'm not sure what happened the first time, but the most recent occurance happened when I attempted to reboot to Vista after running a Linux Live CD (SimplyMepis). I did not install Linux, just ran it off the CD. I closed down Linux, took the CD out of the drive, and attempted to boot to Vista. Result "Missing Operating System".

I've checked the boot order in the BIOS and even changed it so that the hard drive booted first. This didn't work.

Does anyone have any idea how to fix this without a reinstall?

Does anyone have any idea as to the cause of the problem?

Does anyone have any idea how to avoid this in the future?

I sure need your help. Thanks.

I was uninstalling some things I didnt use on my computer and when it restarted it said that there was no os avaiable to boot to. I rebooted into f11, f10, f9, ever f- I could but couldnt move my cursor once I was in and had to exit. I ran all the self tests and it passes all of them. I bought it from a friend about six months ago. It came with windows 7 but i put windows 10 on it. I tried to restore and that didnt work either. I cant use a recovery disk because i have no disk drive. I tried to dl a new os but am having trouble getting it from my android to a broken computer. I'm trying to figure out a way to put it on a flash drive and maybe boot up with the flash drive because I have a flash drive of Kali Linux and it boots up fine with the computer. But I don't want to do that every time I want windows as my main OS. It be great if somebody could put me in the right direction because I feel like I've tried everything except the obvious. Thank you

Hi: You are going to have to download the W10 ISO file from another Windows PC using the Media Creation Tool below. https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10 Then you need to use the ISO to DVD/USB tool to transfer the file to a USB flash drive. https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/windows-usb-dvd-download-tool The tool will make the flash drive bootable.

I am attempting to work on a computer for work and when booting up instead of going to the microsoft screen a message comes up that says "Missing operating system." Welcome to TSF

This issue may occur if one or more of the following conditions are true:

* The basic input/output system (BIOS) does not detect the hard disk.
* The hard disk is damaged.
* Sector 0 of the physical hard disk drive has an incorrect or malformed master boot record (MBR).

Note Some third-party programs or disk corruption can damage an MBR.
* An incompatible partition is marked as Active.

What did you do to the computer before this happened. Please tell everything so we may assist you better

I used revo to uninstall that useless Pinnacle video editing software and the 200+ GB's of files and other junk associated with it. fter it ran, I used the revo tool that erases the unused space, IE permanently gets rid of, that those files used. I used Crap cleaner afterwards. I rebooted fine. I then started messing with my RAM voltages a little and when i went to boot I get, "Operating System Missing."

I have set my voltages back to levels at which the computer WAS working....... operating system missing
I have used the WD utility to check the hard drive, it checks out fine.
I have inserted my Vista installation disc (retail 64 bit Vista), and tried to do both a restore and and repair. "No operating system."
Bios sees the HDD as did the bootable WD HDD utility. I have an option in the repair (Vista disc) to load drivers, but what file is it that I use to load the drivers?

Any suggestions on how I can recover this HDD? While losing my data won't stop the world, I have about 2 years worth of articles I wrote that I don't want to lose along with my COD WAW profile lol, (not to mention some kick ass recipes I found over the last 18 month's lol). Besides, I'm hard headed and sick to death of the Microsoft typical "Reformat and re-install" method of fixing any minor OS problem. That's not a solution, that's dropping a nuke to get rids of a fly that's bothering you, sure the fly is gone but.............

Hi there,

I am getting this message on my laptop that tells me "operating system is missing". This is supposedly to do with my hard drive either being broken, or the black cable connecting it is damaged! I opened up the computer and while the cable looks in tact, it has a bit of fraying at the end that connects to the motherboard, so what I would appreciate some help with is what I should do next. I would rather not seek a PC repair company because chances are I can fix the computer myself!

I turned on my Dell Latitude Laptop which immediately displayed "missing operating system".

I restarted the computer and got the same message.
I restarted and pressed F12 for reboot options and ran diagnostics. All passed.
No other functions are available.

Is there a program I can download to a flash drive to boot up the computer to run a virus scan.

I am using Windows 10

Even the HDD diags passed too? Cause it sounds like no HDD is being detected. I'd you press f12 for boot options and select internal hard disk does it work? Does it give an error?

Hi. . .

The recovery DVDs must be burned per the manufacturer's instructions so they are bootable discs.

Also, make sure that your BIOS settings place the DVD drive 1st in boot-up order.

You should have a manufacturer recovery partition on your system - the majority of Vista Systems do.

Regards. . .
