Client and Web-based email - which is more secure?

Q: Client and Web-based email - which is more secure?

I can't seem to find anything that mentions this anywhere. Are they the same? I know you can get viruses from downloading/opening emails in a client, can you from the Web? Which is more secure from hackers?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi there

I'm trying to look for an alternative robust email client to outlook -- want to start gradually moving away from Ms Office to cheaper solutions.

I don't like the way Ms is going with subscription based Office 365 and Office 2013 is IMO "The Pits" - office 2010 works fine but I want where possible to start using alternatives. Libre Office is fine for some things but not quite ready for prime time yet (IMO) especially for EXCEL but I can start moving away from office gradually with an email client first.

The email client must NOT be web or browser based (I Hate webmail type of things) and must support IMAP. I don't want it to have ADWARE or NAGWARE (you know those that keep persuading you "Please update to PRO version etc etc"). It must also support MULTIPLE ACCOUNTS. It should ideally have a similar or identical interface to OUTLOOK -- simple plain, not like the background I've seen on some Gamers machines !!!!

If it can integrate with GMAIL that's fine but not mandatory. Preferably free too .

I did see a portable client ISCRIBE at i.Scribe and InScribe: A Small and Easy to use Email Client but it looks as if it might be a little experimental.

I discarded OPERAMAIL -- don't want any BROWSER or web mail type of stuff.

Linux has some decent choices such as EVOLUTION (probably one of the best if not the best) but Windows seems a bit lacking in this area -- pity OUTLOOK EXPRESS wasn't continued after XP -- it was small, simple and could als... Read more

A:alternative email client to Outlook (NOT WEB BASED) please

From my previous post in Need a good email client :
Mozilla Thunderbird. You might be put off by claims about its future (no more development) but it will still be supported for a long time (stability/security fixes still going on). Zimbra Desktop Incredimail Pegasus Mail Opera Mail eM Client Windows Live Mail / Windows 8 Mail App
When have you tried opera mail last ? It should be separate from the browser today (it still uses the old presto engine while the browser uses the chrome one), check here : Opera Desktop Team - Opera Mail

Thunderbird, and Zimbra are all good choices and should fit your requirements. eM Client is very nice but it supports only 2 mail accounts on free version. Pegasus Mail is quite good but the UI is old now and it doesn't feel like outlook. Incredimail has promotional tag lines in your outgoing email and some ads show up.

Not included in this list is Claws Mail - the email client that bites!, since I never tried it. It seems to be OK, it's open source and works on both linux and windows, the interface looks a bit like outlook express, and it supports multiple accounts and IMAP. It might be what you're looking for.

Hello all

I have recently reformatted my HDD and re-installed Windows 7.
I would like to have some suggestions and help on deciding what Email client I should use.

I have used Thunderbird Email client for a few years now and I must admit I'm relatively happy with it.
But I know software technology has moved on. and I always like to see and maybe try differing software alternatives.

What is the safest most secure Email client to use on Windows 7 ?
Windows live mail 2011 has not long been released, and I am wondering whether to give it a try instead of Thunderbird.
Or should I stick with Thunderbird becuase using anything other than Thunderbird could compromise my systems security by using anything other than Thunderbird for my Email.
Or are there any other freeware alternatives to Thunderbird or Windows Live mail 2011. That I am not aware of that are safer and better than the two above Email clients ?

I would also like some advice on choosing what email server settings to use. What are the fundamental difference between POP and IMAP Email server settings.
and why is there an option to choose either one ?
Is one safer then the other. If so which one ? Which one should I use, if I use one PC with various email addresses from various Email providers such as Gmail, GMX, and Windows Live Mail ?

After searching online for an answer I have decided to ask here for some clear advice.

Thanks in advance.

A:What is Safest and secure Email client for Windows 7

You made a good choice with Thunderbird.

As far as safety and security goes, using computers period is a security risk. Your information is never 100% safe all the time. Vulnerabilities are always being found, and software is always being updated. It's a never-ending cycle. One email client versus another...there isn't much to compare really.

Most email providers allow for encryption between the server and your computer (to keep your emails from being read by someone else). You simply have to choose the right settings.

I have never used another email client, so I can't advise on any good free alternatives. See here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_e-mail_clients

Here are the main differences between IMAP and POP:

POP is a one-way download (of new emails only) from the email server to your email client. When you delete an email in your client, it stays on the server. When you send an email in your client, it does not get put in the Sent folder on the server. Server > computer only

IMAP has more features in the fact that it pulls everything from the server (including email folders) and syncs everything back to the server. When you send an email in Gmail for example, it will show up in the Sent folder in your webmail (Gmail in your internet browser). Everything goes both ways. Whatever you do in webmail is reflected in your client, and vice-versa.

IMAP is better if you switch between webmail and your email cleint a lot and need everything to st... Read more

I am new to Exchange and am having some problems with it. I have two aliases set up and would like to move messages sent to either alias to a specific folder. In the past, I have successfully done this with client side rules based on a value in the subject line. Unfortunately, the text in the subject line is not standardized. When I receive an email sent to the alias it resolves to my username from the address book and is delivered to my inbox. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Hello message board! Just a few questions here I can not seem to find out via Google, manuals, and reading other forum posts... We are attempting to utilize a t610 with the Linux based o.s. and are running into a few hurdles... I have seen on "Windows" based thin clients, after you make a change to something, you must "Commit" the changes... Is there a way to do this on a Linux box? It seems that the o.s. partition is Read Only?? Also, is there a way to navigate files and folders on this type of thin client? I see the terminal in "Admin" mode and I can kind-of nav files and folders through the text editor, but I am at a semi-loss doing things this way... I know this may be a stupid question, but is there a way to re-image this thin client to a "Windows" based o.s.? The main problem I am experiencing is an add-on/extension in firefox is not "sticking" in my firefox browser.... I have installed the extension many times, and after I restart the browser, it is gone and my settings are reverted to "original"... I am taking a guess here, but I am guessing every time this client "reboots" it is booting to an image?? One last question, is there any "manuals" for these Linux based clients? I see most or all of the helps seems to be geared towards Windows, and would just like a reference... Thanks for reading!Brandon

A:T610 Linux based thin client

If you're talking about the HP ThinPro OS- Before you can make changes to the file system, you need to run this command from the terminal - "fsunlock". When you're done, "fslock" locks the file system again. There isn't another file explorer tool included that I'm aware of in ThinPro. Command line and the notepad tool are the only real ways to navigate the file system. If you're looking for help with something, keep in mind it is basically a stripped-down version of Ubuntu, with some extra utilities and GUI provided by HP. The nuts and bolts are the same as an Ubuntu build so I've gotten quite a bit of insight from Ubuntu forums online for problems that I've had. As for your browser extensions issue, depending on how you're doing this, you can configure connections to allow them to configure their own settings, or to use HP ThinPro settings. If you haven't allowed Firefox to create and use its own settings in the file system, nothing you change inside the browser will stick. I haven't tried installing a browser extension but I'm pretty sure that's where your problem is.

I was wondering if it's possible configure a Windows 2019 IIS v10 hosted Web Server to perform OCSP checking of client certificates that are used to authenticate?

It is my understanding that typically the Responder URL that the Web Server contacts in order to validate the client cert is extracted from the AIA attribute in the client certificate. But is it possible to override/supplement this with an additional Responder?

For instance, what if I set up an OCSP Responder in the same domain as the Web Server and associated its revocation configuration with the SUB CA binded to the IIS Site. Now if client certs come in for authentication  and have an unrelated OCSP Responder
in their AIA, can I somehow tell the Web Server to check also the aforementioned Responder that has been stood up in the domain?

A:OCSP Based Validation for Client Certificates Using Responder Defined by Web Server

Per a reply from Mark B. Cooper at PKI Solutions this is indeed possible. You must edit the following GPO in order to override the default behaviour of the web server which is to only check the Responder URL specified in the client certificates' AIA extension.
Default Domain Policy > Computer Configuration >  Policies > Windows Settings > Security Settings > expand Public Key Policies
Once a custom Responder is specified in the CA / SUB CA's revocation properties the above GPO will allow it to check that custom Responder URL first, then ocsp as defined in the AIA extension and then CRLs
Thanks Mark!
Will post reference links once MS verifies my account.

I'd like to use Thunderbird at home with a Gmail account that can be used by the kids. Now I am using Avira IS 2012 and would like to make it scan emails through it's mailguard component. I have seen Thunderbird work with Avast IS on my brother's pc but I see that for it to scan all emails the SSL/TSL should be deactivated. A:Thunderbrid email client, Comodo Email Certificates, Avira IS 2012 questions

I would highly recommend that you keep TLS/SSL enabled this makes sure that your password and user credentials are not sent in the clear.

if the AV needs to have this disabled then its not a good AV..

The ports are on the setup page for Gmail: http://kb.mozillazine.org/Using_Gmail_with_Thunderbird_and_Mozilla_Suite

Digital Certs are expensive to create and use, and only vital for businesses and not home users.

My email client, desktop program PostBox (for Win) has been slowed since I installed BD TS2016 (I'm quite sure this is the reason as it was very fast before, and slowed immediately after...)

I also run WebRoot AV (which does not scan email as per their documentation) and HitmanAlertPro (which could also be affecting my email client, but I uninstalled it to test this somewhat small chance given its just an anti-exploit, and it doesn't seem to have affected it, the client is still slow).

1. I would LIKE BD to scan my email as of course having AV w/o scanning email could in many ways be pointless given email can be a deadly vector for heavy malware.

2. But I don't want my client to be slow. It's not horrible, and I suppose I could tolerate it (basically deleting messages, loading new messages, and the program responsiveness overall, is a bit sluggish compared with its normal instantaneous response)

3. Is there a way to configure email scanning differently? Or should the program NOT be slowing my client noticeably in general, and is this behavior indicative of something being wrong?

I'm sure BD users will be able to comment on whether it slows their email or not given they use a desktop client like Outlook, Postbox, Thunderbird, etc.

A:BitDefender Email Scanning Mechanism? Performance Issues w/ email Client

Hello All,

This is driving me crazy....

The Problem/Symptoms
In IE 6, When I try to get onto email, banking, etc. (https sites) I get the "Page Cannot be Displayed" screen. Firefox will not even open the home page, and an online poker client I normally use without a problem cannot connect. I believe this started after a few automatic updates on August 16 - most were security updates.

What I Have Tried
First of all, in Safe Mode everything works fine which really baffles me.

- I have turned off my windows Firewall completely
- I do not have Norton, only Symantec Antivirus... on which I have tried turning off auto-protect.
- I have checked the SSL setup in internet options and all is ok.
- I deleted temporary internet files.
- I went thru MS config and turned off all non-microsoft services.
- I ended various processes in the task manager.
- I connected to a neighbor's wireless to see if it was a router problem
- System Restore is not an option - was off before the updates.

None of these worked (EXCEPT SAFE MODE where all worked fine)

This is really baffling me and now I am starting to consider a reinstall of windows, although who knows if that will even work. Does anyone have ANY ideas on what to do about this? Any help is much appreciated. Thanks all.

A:Cannot Access Secure Sites/Client Apps/Firefox

Try installing firefox.. and see if you have the same issues.

Here is the problem: I have my email client (PocoMail) set as my default email client. It shows up as default client in the "Default Program section" in IE7.
When I click on a email link, whether it's in another program or on a website, my email client doesn't open the compose window with the address entered BUT IE7 starts and opens about 80 windows which need to be killed with Task Manager. By the way, this has nothing to do with PocoMail because it also happens when Thunderbird is set as default.

I am stumped. Any ideas?

I use Putty all the time. In trouble shooting a neighbor's problem with his Juno web mail where he never gets my attached or inserted (embedded) jpg's, I've just come to the realization that at least Juno and Yahoo are unusable if you want to forward a large number of attached and/or inserted photos given the hoops you have to jump through to view the photos. If I forward him an email from Outlook with, for example, 20 inserted jpg's, I find that at least in my Yahoo email, you have to open them one at at time and with a lot of clicking. This is nuts. Is this typical of all web based email solutions? I have not tried gmail yet.

I turned on the Windows XP firewall even though I have a dial-up ISP, and now I'm having problems accessing my web-based email. I set my computer so I have to okay all cookies, and the problem is that I keep okaying the cookies for this email, and it keeps asking me to do it over and over, interfering with writing email messages. Another problem is that suddenly I am not getting every email message. I realize the problem could be from my web-based email provider, but I am curious about whether the XP firewall or any of the bazillion XP patches Windows has put out (all of which I've also downloaded recently) might be messing me up. How do I check, and if Windows somethings are at fault, what do I do?

My Email client, MSN Premium (not Hotmail) will not open to write an email when clicking on any website's button labeled "send us an email". Instead this action causes several instances (up to 5) of IE6 to invoke and then the Op Sys (WinME) hangs until I use Ctrl-Alt-Del to end the erroneously opened IE tasks. I thought maybe it was that MSN mail was not my default email client so I used the proceedure to make MSN mail my default instead of OE6 but each time I returned to the options to see if it had changed it still says my default client is OE. Interestingly, if I envoke the MSN explorer and go to my MSN email inbox I can send and receive my email perfectly. This machine has been up and running since last October. I do not know if the problem has always existed or started more recently since I don't often click on "send us email" buttons.
I have three other machines similarly set up and none of them exhibit this problem.
WinMe, MSN Premium, and MSN messenger 6 all are up to date and current.
McAfee AV is on and up to date.
CounterSpy and Spybot are up to date and actively running.
Firefox 1.0.2 is my default browser

Specifically if using the portable form of Opera Mail, the mail client available from portableapps.com.
I tried looking at many articles from internet searches but found nothing telling where to find the folder holding the email messages for the email client.  My copy of portable Opera Mail is on a usb flash drive.  I have tried looking through the folders for the application but still do not know how to recognize any email messages.

A:Where on desktop is email for email client?

You do understand that downloading apps like this from most 3rd party sites poses all sorts of security risks, Remember this, That software while it was made by WhoEver has now been modified by somebody, How was it modified, Who did it, What else did they put in it? I may be wrong here however I also think may be against most software developers TOS to use modified software like this.
FYI only.
While Opera is free some sites and some people have used " the making of a app portable" on paid for software to bypass  having to pay for the software. I used to do just that a long time ago. I now know and understand why it is bad.
Making XXXXbytes premium into a portable application. While creating the portable you use a genuine key or "other" methods to activate Then compile it as portable with the activation in place, Now anybody with XXXXbytes portable has a free premium copy instead. That's software piracy. And Theft.

due to the fact that we are a small business firm and don't have a server OS I'd like to create a network drive folder tree for Lawyers, Secretaries etc. with different access rights and so on.

On our Storage-Workstation I'm able to deny access or free access to folders completely, but if I wanna allow access only for special users, I don't succeed.

I can specify groups and users in Computer management - Local users and groups, but I can't include the computers of our workgroup, I don't see them, only the workstation pc name is given. Can somebody help me?

Outlook express is no more.
I guess I'm assuming you do not want Outlook?
IMHO, Mozilla Thunderbird is an excellent client. No ad-ware. It can even connect to an Exchange Server, if you desired. I use it on Linux, but works equally well on Windows 7.

Hi, I was just reading with interest a previous post

wherein a solution was given that involved using ms excel to send email based on certain logic and/or events. I'm looking at a similar scenario where I'd be interested in knowing if market conditions are appropriate. If so, then I'd also like to receive an email. I'm not, however, using an app like XLQ (although I know about it) that feeds live data into into Excel. Instead I'm using Greenchart's software. It sends me an alert when certain logical conditions are met. The problem is that Greenchart's box for logic isn't very big, so I've ended up breaking the logic into multiple alerts. So for simplification what I end up with is something like this If I receive email marked in the header as #1 and email marked in the header as #3 (or similarly #2 & #3 etc) then I know I need go into Greenchart and make buy/sell decisions from there. So I was wondering if there was a way to get these emails to show up in Excel and then perform the kind of logic indicated in the thread above (so that if I have to get up in the middle of the night, I know it's probably worthwhile versus just being notified of email that's not actionable). By the way, I'd be interested in skipping bringing it into Excel if we could come up with something more elegant.

Hello and thank you in advance for any help or advice

My problem has been going off and on for a while now. I have a Yahoo! Mail account that I have had for years and relay upon completely. Recently, I receive mail but I cannot compose, reply or forward. I was advised to system restore, I did so and the problem vanished for a few days. It came back again so I did the same, and again it worked. Now it is back again, and I know that the problem is reappearing because of an update either to Windows or my anti-virus program, that whenever installed, plays havoc with my system. That is why system restore works for a day and then it is back again because the update is reinstalled. I don't want to keep solving the problem by restoring the system, nor do I want to make my computer vulnerable by not downloading and installing all essential updates. What should I do? Are there any other solutions to this problem?
I've tried to access my email account from another computer and it worked perfectly, so I am sure that the problem is from my computer and not from Yahoo! servers.
My OS is Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 3

I'm running windows xp professional, and I've been having trouble accessing web-based email services (hotmail, yahoomail, and also a private microsoft exchange server web interface) from my computer. I've tried using both firefox and internet explorer. When attempting to load my hotmail or yahoo inbox in ie, the page simply never loads. When I try in Firefox, I get an error message that reads "the document contains no data." I am able to access my inbox at the exchange server, but am unable to send emails.

I also can't access my online banking (fleet.com), and have had trouble posting to some tech support forums. I thought it was a problem with secure sites, but I am able to access some secure sites.

All of these services are fully available from a friend's computer running on the same internet connection, through the same router, so it's a problem specific to my machine. Any help?

I just crossed m mind this site might be helpful for this...

I’m part of a startup where we have a variety of clients spread out across the Los Angeles area. Our “call center” is basically our cell phones. There’s been some discontent with this because clients call us on our time off. Is there a way to convert our calls into email notifications? An email is less intrusive than a phonecall...

A:Email based call center

This is a UK-based call mgt service. Perhaps something like this in your area? It would enable you to have a 'standard' among your co-workers and a consistent service.

i have been trying to login into my google, hotmail, and yahoo web based email accounts. but with hotmail and yahoo, everytime i enter in my username and password. Then the next thing that happens is it gives me a "page cannot be displayed" or "problem loading the page" error message. But with gmail whenever i just type in "mail.google.com" i get the "problem loading the page" message. I can search on msn, yahoo, and google. Just can't log onto my email. But the thing that i find weird is that i CAN log onto my 3 accounts and send and receive emails at any other computer (school, library, friend's house, ect.) It is my home computer that has the problem. I have gone through the vary long process of cleaning my computer as your forum recommended. The only reason i'm doing this is because i was told that "hijackthis" would fix my problem. but i was also told that i shouldnt just go in and delete every thing it finds in the scan(which i came very close to doing).
