Q: T440s: How to enable the Windows eDrive feature?

I would like to enable the eDrive feature on my T440s to encrypt my hard drive. How can I do this?In order to do so,I enabled "OS optimized defaults" in the bios settingsLoaded them and saved themDid a clean install of Windows 8.1 and removed all partitions during this processInstalled all Lenovo driversInstalled all Windows updatesTried to turn on bit lockerAccording to [1] "If everything is eDrive compliant you won?t be asked whether or you want to encrypt all or part of the drive". However, I am asked whether I want to encrypt all or part of the drive!! So my questions is, what is wrong? How can I enable the eDrive feature? [1] http://www.anandtech.com/show/6891/

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

A: T440s: How to enable the Windows eDrive feature?

The problem seems to be the Intel Rapid Storage AHCI Driver. Without installing the driver offered on the Lenovo page ( and using the driver that came with Windows 8.1 (, it works. Does anybody experience the same problem? Is there gonna be new driver that supports the eDrive feature?

Has any one been able to enable edrive on the T450s. Intel SSD Pro Administrator Tool shows that the drive is Opal Ready. But when i try to enable edrive i get this error. Error: enabling eDrive with this tool is not supported on the selected IntelSSD. Please ensure the tool and the drive's firmware are up to date. Anyone have a suggestion?

If the SSD came from Lenovo, it's not an eDrive.  Lenovo doesn't sell any eDrive-capable SSDs.

Hello everybody and thank you for your time.

My query for today is regarding the autorun feature, which of course automatically opens up the autoplay window once a DVD or CD is inserted into the drive. I have so far been unable to resolve or determine the route of the problem to why my computer fails to undertake this action. As of today I have engaged myself in the following steps in the hope of resolving this difficulty.

1) My Computer ? DVD drive ? Properties ? AutoPlay ? ?Music CDs, Music Files, Pictures, Video Files and Mixed Content?, ?Take no action, etc, etc?, ?Prompt me each time to choose an action?. Here I made various adjustments followed by a repetitive trial attempt of my DVD (the same DVD it must be noted) but all to no avail.

2) The AutoRun feature or the AutoPlay feature does not work when you insert a CD-ROM in the CD drive -) Method 2 and Method 4, all failed (I will try this again though because it seems other people have had success here).

3) Completed successfully various virus, spyware and malware scans, defragmented my disk, cleared my history and cookies, diskspace is 70% free, all to no avail.

Note: Some months ago I remember using a free trial version of the AVG PC Tunep 2011 tool and upon completion of a scan; I remember that the recommended safe measure was to disable ALL autorun applications which meant I would therefore have to manually open up anything I put into my computer like memory stick, DVD etc, etc.

A:How to enable DVD/CD AutoRun feature on Windows XP?

Hi Anthony,

I'm sure you know this but the CD/DVD disk must first be AUTORUN enabled by the person that burned the disk.

I have at T440s running Windows 10 v1803 with a strange issue. When I connect an Ethernet cable, the connection will continue "identifying" until I manually disable/re-enable the adapter from Network and Sharing Center. If I take no action, after 60-90 seconds, the connection will stall on "Unidentified Network - No Internet Access". This happens with EVERY cable I use at multiple locations, not just one particular place. I have tried: 1. Rolling back to a previous driver version - No change.2. Installing the latest driver from Intel - No change.3. Turning off "Allow Windows to turn off power to this device..." - No change.4. Uninstalling Bonjour (recommendation from Google) - No change.5. Formatted the hard drive and re-installed Windows 10 - No change. If a cable is connected before I power on the machine, it resolves just fine. I have searched the depths of the web for answers but haven't found anything that works quite yet. I have an Intel(R) Ethernet Connection I217-LM adapter with a driver date of Any advice would be appreciated!

Hi, Try the following. Download the Realtek HD Audio installer on the link below and save it to your Downloads folder. http://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp72001-72500/sp72484.exe When done, hold down the Windows key and press R Into the Run window, type devmgmt.msc and hit enter. In Device Manager, expand Sound, Video and Game Controllers.  Right click the Realtek device and select Uninstall - you should also get a prompt to remove the current driver, tick the box to allow this and then proceed with the uninstall. When complete, download and reinstall the Chipset driver on the following link. http://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp73501-74000/sp73512.exe When the Chipset reinstallation has completed, shutdown the notebook. Unplug the AC Adapter and then remove the battery.  Hold down the Power button for 30 seconds.  Re-insert the battery and plug in the AC Adapter. Tap away at the esc key as you start the notebook to launch the Start-up Menu and then select f10 to enter the bios menu.  Press f9 to load the defaults ( this is sometimes f5, but the menu at the bottom will show the correct key ), use the arrow keys to select 'Yes' and hit enter.  Press f10 to save the setting and again use the arrow keys to select 'Yes' and hit enter. When windows has reloaded, open your Downloads folder, right click on the Realtek installer and select 'Run as Administrator' to start the installation.  When this... I love to be able to disable and enable SSD or HDD storage from Bios. Why It is useful? 1) You can  enable one of available storage  as secure backup  target and disable it when backup is done. 2) You have option to disable some extra storage to save battery life and speed up boot time.3) You can disable  main OS storage ( let  say first SSD with Windows)  and install another OS at second  SSD without effecting  main storage. ( let say you can experiment installing  Linux or MacOS at another SSD without being worry about Windows at first SSD)4) You can clone First OS from first SSD into second  SSD. Then you can boot from second  SSD by  disabling first SSD and vise versa 5) You can disable broken SSD if it create issue with boot. I know @Amy response is, Think engineering  happily can add it if there are enough demand for it. So please vote on this feature request  if you think it is cool to be able to disable and enable storage from BIOS! Thanks!

A:How Can I Enable Physical Address Extension(pae) Feature In Vista?

This Microsoft KnowledgeBase Article discusses PAE and Vista.Supposedly, you can enable PAE in Vista by running "BCDEdit", the boot configuration editor that is included in Vista. You should run this in "administrative mode".Typing "cmd" in the "start" "search" space, and press Ctrl + Shift + Enter. This runs "cmd" in Administrator Mode. Then type - "run" Type - BCDEdit /set PAE forceenableOf course, if your system didn't meet the requirements shown in that KnowledgeBase article, it won't work.Let us know if this helped, OK?Oh, it appears that "BCDEdit /deletevalue PAE" should remove the command, again, at the Admin level.

I'm new to this forum and up until today Ive managed to fix most of my windows problems, but this one has me at my wits end. About a week ago, right after I installed a new DVD Burner and Nero 6 my computer (Windows XP) stopped showing the welcome screen when resuming from screen saver. It will still show the screen when resuming from standby mode, but I want to make sure the screen saver feature is not indicative of something worse. Whats more troubling is that I can go to the registry and set all the right keys and it still wont work. I am setting ScreenSaverIsSecure to 1 and NoAutoReturnToWelcome to 0. After doing this, the window shows the "On Resume...." checkbox is checked but the function is greyed out. Fast-user switching is turned on.

Hi, can I use eDrive on my ThinkPad X220? I confirmed that it has TPM v1.2, but apparently it also needs UEFI Version 2.3.1 (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh831627.aspx). My reported "UEFI BIOS Version" is 1.39. Are these numbers comparable (one is Lenovo-specific, one is not, I guess), so that eDrive is not possible on my device? Or how can I find out, which UEFI Version the Lenovo "UEFI BIOS" is based on? And do Opal drives even work on the mSATA slot? I also found this:http://download.lenovo.com/ibmdl/pub/pc/pccbbs/mobiles/win8beta_8det8059.txtThe version number is not even close to 2.x and yet it supports eDrive? Could I switch to this BIOS version and use it? Or does 1.39 include the changes of 1.29a, anyway? Thank you for your help!Philipp

Can I use eDrive on my ThinkPad X220?Yes. I use a Crucial MX100 SATA SSD with X220 BIOS 1.29a and eDrive hardware encryption is fully supported in Windows 8.1. Are these numbers comparable? No. How can I find out, which UEFI Version the Lenovo "UEFI BIOS" is based on?This question has been asked several times over the years and so far nobody has offered an answer. And do Opal drives even work on the mSATA slot?I would expect so. The version number is not even close to 2.x and yet it supports eDrive?Correct. As mentioned in the description 1.29a was for beta program support. Features added were for testing and not guaranteed to be supported in subsequent BIOS releases. Could I switch to this BIOS version and use it?Yes, just downgrade to it. Or does 1.39 include the changes of 1.29a, anyway? Not according to the changelog, but as you are already on 1.39, try it for yourself before downgrading to 1.29a. 1.29a works for me so I have no reason to upgrade.

So you're saying that the USB port works but your thumb drive isn't detected. Take a trip to your friends house and see if your drive works in his computer. If it doesn't than your drive is BROKEN. If it does work then you have a driver conflict in your machine.

Hi folks, I've been trying hard to get my Crucial m500 SSD hard drive to work in edrive (hardware encryption) mode with the w520. I've read several other threads related to the process for different Lenovo machines, but I haven't seen much discussion on the topic for the W series laptops as of yet. Here's what I've tried so far: Clean install of Windows 8.1, while running the latest bios 1.42.All updates from Windows Update toolAll updates from Lenovo System Update EXCEPT the "Intel Rapid Storage AHCI Driver". This seems to be a major point in other threads since apparently the Intel driver is incompatible. W520 BIOS doesn't support eDrive.  I highlighted in red the reason why, from the below URL.  At the time W520 was developed this protocol (and UEFI 2.3.1) didn't exist yet.  We don't have any plan to retrofit the older systems to add this support now.
For Encrypted Hard Drives used as startup drives:

The drive must be in an uninitialized state.
The drive must be in a security inactive state.
The computer must be UEFI 2.3.1 based and have the EFI_STORAGE_SECURITY_COMMAND_PROTOCOL defined. (This protocol is used to allow programs running in the EFI boot services environment to send security protocol commands to the drive).
The computer must have the Compatibility Support Module (CSM) disabled in UEFI.
The computer must always boot natively from UEFI.

I have a new M710S (SFF ThinkCentre) which came with a 256gb PCIe Samsung M2 SSD.  I have enabled BitLocker hardware encryption on many other computers using ATA-based Samsung SSDs (like EVO 850s) by loading Windows10 Enterprise, and setting the BIOS to enable OS control of the TPM chip. I cannot get Win10 Enterprise on this new M710S to work with hardware encryption.  Whenever I go to turn on BitLocker, it prepares for software encryption.  I was assured by Lenovo Sales that since the PCIe M2 is TPM 2.0 OPAL TCG certified, BitLocker hardware encryption would work. Other Samsung SSDs require Samsung Magician to set them up for BitLocker hardware encryption-- Samsung Magician does not recognize the Samsung M2 PCIe memory that Lenovo is using. Does Lenovo provide the tools necessary to set up BitLocker hardware encryption on the M2 drives they are providing?Has anyone done hardware encrytpion successfully on these new M2 PCIe drives? BIOS= M16KT49A Thanks in advance.

Hello I've got T440s (20AQ004URT) and I want to connect it to my Sony Bravia TV (Miracast certified) wirelessly.I've made clean Windows 10 installation. At this point WiDi connection works 8 times out of 10. Then, Windows automatically installs necessary drivers (for touchpad, graphics, etc.). At this point I could hardly get WiDi working, it starts to connect to my TV and then just fails. So, I went to Intel forum and found out that I should install latest drivers from Intel (graphics, networking and Intel WiDi Pro software). I have installed all that stuff, but nothing changed. My hardware seems to be compatible with Intel WiDi Pro, as I could install necessary software. Also, my antivirus/firewall is disabled. But I still can't get WiDi working - laptop sees my TV, it starts to connect, my TV shows connection, but then it fails.  Please, help me resolve this issue.

Most Thinkpads coming back on the market as refurbished units have Windows 10 installed.  This is even for models as early as the T400/T500 when the original operating system was Windows 7. This is somewhat annoying since I have devices for which drivers are available only for Windows 7 and earlier. I would prefer not to have to re-purchase "upgraded" devices - at least until the EOL of Windows 7. What are my option(s) to get Windows 7 on such a system? i) Would the Restore and Recovery discs for the original Windows 7 install still be available from Lenovo? ii) Would it be better to find a generic Windows 7 installation disc (with COA and Product Key), install this, then get the drivers for the specific Thinkpad from the Lenovo web site? iii) Could downgrade rights to Windows 7 Pro be exercised with a refurbished Thinkpad running Windows 10 Pro? Thanks! P.S. How about the more recent Thinkpads which were originally with Windows 7 Pro via downgrade rights from Windows 8/8.1/10?

Hi there all.  I just purchased a refurbished T440s from BestBuy.  It was shipped from one their resselers.  It has the following specs: T440s - 14"Intel i5-4300U CPU1920X1080 Touchscreen250GB SSD8GB DDR3 It came with Windows 10, which I had to go thru and install it myself.  I was a desktop user before and didn't have any experience with notebooks before.  But I did realized it didn't have any of Lenovos utilities on it.  That seemed odd to me.  So I went to Lenovo support.  I was very impressed.  The serial number was detected and 5 downloads were offered as "the most popular" downloads for this model.  So I went ahead and installed the following utilities: - Lenovo's system update for Windows 10- Connect2- Lenovos Power Management Driver for Windows 10- Lenovos System Interface Foundation for Windows 10 So far, so good.  Everything seems to work well.  I have the follwoing questions: 1.  Did I miss anything?  Are there any more utilities that I should be installing? 2.  What is Expresscache Utility.  This computer has only one 250 GB SSD.  Do I need to install the Expresscache utility?  My understanding of it is that Expresscache speeds up reading and writing to HDDs by using cache on SSD.  I don't have an HDD on it.  However, I do use a large external USB HDD.  So would Expresscache help speed up read/write to the external USB HDD? Th... i've got a T440s that was upgraded to windows 10 about 6 months ago. after installing a new brother printer yesterday, the machine won't boot any more; it just goes directly to automatic repair, then diagnostics, neither of which help. i tried several system restore points, but sr always fails telling me it can't copy the registry. i ran the lenovo hardware diagnostics which fails in the targeted read test of the hard drive with bad sectors. i am backing up all the data (which is on the solid-state drive ?) manually from the cli prompt (that still works) before i do anything else. next planned step is to run the bad sectors tool). i'm wondering if the bad sectors are where the registry (or its backup) is stored, and if so, then will "fixing" the bad sectors destroy the registry to the point where i need to do a refresh. this is the first time i've dealt with a system with a hybrid drive (ssd for start-up & os, hd for storage. since it was originally a windows 8.1 machine will running the refresh put back windows 10, and if so, will it know where to write the refreshed os files to the ssd and hd? all suggestions appreciated.

2 days ago I upgraded to Win 10 Pro, yesterday I went to use my mobile broadband connection (4G) and noticed I wasn't able to "see" the cellular connection or activate it anywhere. Checking in the device manager I see the hardware (Sierra Wireless, etc), although strangely the driver is from Microsoft (Generic Broadband Device).   Nothing I do seems to be able to make it work, I've uninstalled the drivers, rebooted, downloaded the current Lenovo driver package (which supposedly has Windows 10 drivers), it installs fine but still no mobile broadband is available to me. I use this feature a lot, and would really like a solution to this...  Thanks Attached is a screen shot of the current driver situation:

Did you upgrade from Win7, or Win8.1?

In the past, I have customized my Trackpoint/Touchpad/mouse advanced settings via the Control Panel/Mouse/Thinkpad tab.  Sometime recently, that tab has disappeared and my customization is gone.  I've tried everything that I can think of to get that tab back, but nothing works.  I have: * Verified that my BIOS is set to enable the Trackpoint and pad.* Uninstalled and reinstalled the Synaptics device driver, version, plus rebooted.* Run Lenovo System Update and installed all relevant driver updates.* Tried to install the Synaptics Touchpad Firmware for Windows 732/764/864/B64, but I get "Reflash cannot find firmware updates for the devices on this system". Any advice?

For some reason these 2 models will image just fine when looking at the TS in SCCM 2012 10. Once the computer is rebooted though it goes right into recovery mode and needs the key entered. Nothing stands out in event viewer. I am looking for some guidance on where I can look for a solution on this.

Upgrading from Windows 8.1 (touch working) to Windows 10 I lost touch functionality. I've tried replacing the LCD myself after cracking the first one just to verify the ribbons were connected behind the LCD assembly (factory tape/glue is holding them down). I haven't tried ordering the Windows 8.1 Restore CDs and rolling back. I can confirm it's not a hardware issue. I'm guessing it's firmware related. Similar to the Yoga touch problems Lenovo's been having and those users upgrading to Windows 10. Checking the forums it looks like updates have been hit or miss. I've tried downloading Windows Tab Installer Package, the Yoga LCD Firmware Updates (unable to pass hidident.exe to update), downloading the SCCM package and looking for any type of installer and none's available. Leaning towards a firmware incompatibility. Can anyone at Lenovo confirm this for me? I can understand the 20AQ had a limited run compared to 20AR (non touch) and the Yoga Series. Still it'd be nice to have someone confirm. It's a shame the laptop is only a few years old. If there's a beta firmware package for the touch digitizer I'd be happy to try. Intermittent response would be better than none. Thanks all,

I am trying to encrypt my drive using BitLocker. I am saving the key to a USB drive, only encrypting used data, and using new encryption mode. I then run system check before encrypting the drive, and when I restart my computer, I get the following message: "BitLocker could not be enabled. The BitLocker encryption key cannot be obtained from the Trusted Platform Module (TPM). C: was not encrypted."I've done some troubleshooting elsewhere, but can't find any info to help me. I'm running Windows 10 Pro on a Lenovo T440s machine. My TPM is initialized, owned and running, so I'm not sure what to do there. Here are images of my TPM from Device Manager.I'm at a loss, and I definitely need to be able to encrypt my drive. Does anyone have any information? If you need more information about my system, BIOS, etc., I'll be happy to oblige. Thank you.

A:Unable to encrypt drive using BitLocker on T440s running Windows 10

My guess is that you deployed Win10 in legacy mode, instead of UEFI mode.  You can confirm this in msinfo32.exe, look for "BIOS Mode" in the right-hand panel.  It needs to be "UEFI" if you want to use TPM 2.0.

Hi there.I'm new here but old to IBM/Lenovo  I'm writing you because I'm experiencing a challenge with my t440s and I'm getting crazy.About one month ago, I performed a clean reinstall of Windows 7 pro on my t440s, also installing all the most updated drivers from Lenovo support website (in particular the power manager, hotkeys, display drivers, etc... Nowmy battery duration, with the same power manager settings, has dropped from an average duration of 5 hours to around 1:30-2 h. (normal websites browsing, email checking, nothing "too much"). I have performed a battery reset in the battery management section of the power manager, but nothing changed. When the display brightness is set to 0, the screen is actually still on (not so bright) but still on, and it's a way too much for me if I use my t440s during the night time. Before reinstalling the OS, setting the display brightness to 0 = black screen, like switched off. Hope someone can help me with this situation. Thanks a lot and wish you all a super weekend.Andrea

I agreed to a Lenovo update yesterday (3/21/2018 for my T440s. I remember it saying something about a Bios update and to make sure the machine was plugged in. After agreeing to everything and starting the update, after a while I looked over and noticed that it had a black screen with nothing happening for several hours. The green power button light is on, but when I press it, it just beeps at me. Even holding it down for 10 seconds or more with nothing but a series of beeps (screen stays black with green power button light on). I tried taking the battery out and letting it run out of power, then put the battery back in, plugged it back in and tried to get it to restart.

A:T440s Bios Update Fail! Black Screen w/ Green Power button still on. (Windows 10 64bit)

One thing you might try that works on some ThinkPads is to reset the BIOS by unplugging the coin cell battery.     That will involved removing the AC power adapter, the main battery and the bottom cover of the laptop, which is detailed on page 61 of the Hardware Maintenance Manual.    Once the base cover is removed, unplug the coin cell battery (see page 67 of the Hardware Maintenance Manual) for a few minutes to let the power drain, and then plug it back in, re-assemble the laptop and try booting it back up. Be careful when prying up the latches while removing the base cover because they can break easily, but I found that gentle prodding and an old credit card etc. can be useful in working the latches free, but you can also get special tools at most electronic stores (often referred to as "spudgers"), to help pry open the case if desired. Best of luck,

Hi, whenever I turn on or off "Number Lock" in my keyboard a notification message pops up in the lower right corner of the screen displaying the status (ON or OFF). Same for "Caps Lock". Is this a Windows 7 feature? If so, how can I disable it? Thanks (I went to Control Panel/Keyboard but found no such feature)

A:Windows 7 feature?

From what I could find out, the only notification that comes with Windows is the Ease of Access Center / Make the keyboard easier to use. This option will play a 'tone' when the Caps Lock, Num Lock or Scroll Lock are activivated. Any on-screen notifications are placed there by third party software that is usually installed by the computer manufacturer. Or it may also be placed on the system with software from some custom, third party keyboard manufacturers.

So one thing that I love about windows is the alt+tab feature where you can cycle through the open programs.  One change that I noticed from windows 10 to previous windows is that the desktop was removed from the alt+tab.  I found that
whenever you use a program (games mostly for me) that goes into a fullscreen mode and don't have another program open, you can't exit out of the fullscreen, in windows 8 and before I was able to just alt+tab to access the desktop.  I've tried using
alt+tab, windkey+d, ctrl+shift+esc.  The only way I found to work was to ctrl+alt+del then open the task manager then you can access the desktop.  The problem here is that if I'm using the fullscreen program and want to open
a second program, I have to go through the process I explained to get, let's say, spotify open.  I hope in the next update the desktop gets included in the alt+tab feature!

I have been searching everywhere on this forum and others in trying to fix this. I have a 64bit Windows 7 Ultimate machine. I am trying to add .Net 3.5 from the install windows feature section. It fails and after a reboot it reverts back to not installed. Some things I have tried. I completely removed all .Net installs, I ran the .Net cleanup utility. Then tried to add it and it still fails. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated. Thank you
