Flaw in Network Connection Manager Could Enable Privilege Elevation: Win2000: Aug 14

Q: Flaw in Network Connection Manager Could Enable Privilege Elevation: Win2000: Aug 14

Hiya

The Network Connection Manager (NCM) provides a controlling
mechanism for all network connections managed by a host system.
Among the functions of the NCM is to call a handler routine
whenever a network connection has been established.

By design, this handler routine should run in the security context
of the user. However, a flaw could make it possible for an
unprivileged user to cause the handler routine to run in the
security context of LocalSystem, though a very complex process.
An attacker who exploited this flaw could specify code of his or
her choice as the handler, then establish a network connection
in order to cause that code to be invoked by the NCM. The code
would then run with full system privileges.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello,
I'm with security issue CVE-2020-1472 | Netlogon Elevation of Privilege Vulnerability and the following occurs to me:

I'm having trouble starting to collect events 5827-5831
I have installed the August 2020 update on a DC Microsot Windows Server 2012 R2 to start the event collection, and no events appear, even when logging in with Microsoft Windows Server 2012 without the August update.

I have set the FullSecureChannelProtection registry key to 1, and from a server with Microsoft Windows Server 2012 without the August 2020 update I can login without problems.

No events appear in the security log and I can login without problems with FullSecureChannelProtection at 1. I don't understand where the problem is. Can anyone give me any clues?

sorry for my english
Thanks

Hiya

The Windows Redirector is used by a Windows client to access files,
whether local or remote, regardless of the underlying network
protocols in use. For example, the "Add a Network Place" Wizard or
the NET USE command can be used to map a network share as a local
drive, and the Windows Redirector will handle the routing of
information to and from the network share.

A security vulnerability exists in the implementation of the
Windows Redirector on Windows XP because an unchecked buffer is
used to receive parameter information. By providing malformed data
to the Windows Redirector, an attacker could cause the system to
fail, or if the data was crafted in a particular way, could run
code of the attacker's choice.

Hi
With this latest vulnerability, i need some clarification about what exactly is a "Non-Compliant Device".
In the KB articles definition, A non-compliant device is one that uses a vulnerable Netlogon secure channel connection.
So that means, lets say you have a Windows machine, that has not been patched correctly, and still uses vulnerable netlogon connection.
So once the DC is patched for this vulnerability, what will happen to this Windows machine?
Will it get denied connection and be reported in event ID: 5827/5828?
Or will it be allowed connection, as it is technically a non-compliant device based on the definition, as it is using vulnerable netlogon connection? And be logged under event ID: 5829?

The other question i have is for the use of the GPO policy: "Domain controller: Allow vulnerable Netlogon secure channel connections"
So i understand that this will bypass the enforcement.
However, if the "Non-Compliant" device is not a windows device, i will assume that the GPO will not work for these devices. So when in enforcement phase, for these such non windows devices that is still using vulnerable netlogon connection, there
is no workaround right? Either get vendor to provide a fix or decommission?

Thanks DM.

I just bought TP-LINK Wireless USB Adapter (Model: TL-WN321G) and had followed all necessary procedures (both manual and automatic) to install the driver specifically in my Windows 7 (32-Bit) desktop computer but every time I installed the driver it shows that in my Network Connection there is the "Wireless Network Connection 2" - Disabled. However, when I right click into it and try to Enable, it shows that it is now Enabling.... then Enabled but after that my "Wireless Network Connection 2" still Disabled.

I had already uninstalled my AVG Internet Security 2012 and disabled Windows Firewall and Run in Safe-Mode in installing the driver but still no luck it keeps showing that my "Wireless Network Connection 2" still Disabled after trying to Enable it.

I really appreciate if someone can help me into this.

Let me preface this by saying I know next to nothing about computers, so please provide detailed advice if you choose to advise.

I have a Dell Inspiron E1405 running with Windows XP and a Linksys Wireless-G broadband wireless router WRT54G2.

The wireless was working fine yesterday. Tonight when I turned it on, I couldn't get an internet connection. The modem is ok because I have a connection with an ethernet wire.

When I go into the Network Connections window, I see that Wireless Network Connection is Disabled. Don't understand that. I didn't disable it.

I right click on it and press Enable, but all I get is a "Wireless Network Connection" window that says "Enabling..." and then "Connection Failed."

I ran the trouble shooter, but the suggestions either didn't apply (my hardware is ok with this machine because it has run on it before) or were so involved I was afraid to attempt them and cause a bigger problem. Disabling and changing settings makes me nervous.

Any ideas about what I can do to enable this wireless network connection?

Motherboard: AMD Athlon XP 2000+ at 1.66 GHz, 2GB RAM

I'm at a hotel with wireless DSL service, which I connect to via a Belkin USB wireless NIC, and also on a LAN with family members. My PC is connected to the LAN via cable from my NIC (Realtek RTL8139 Family PCI Fast Ethernet NIC #5) to a Linksys wireless-G router.

This setup has been working fine, though I can't be on Internet and LAN at the same time. But today, for no apparent reason (I haven't made any changes), the system has been freezing entirely (i.e. no mouse, no Ctrl-Alt-Del response) every time at the point when it actually enables my LAN connection (via the Realtek NIC & cable).

I'm pretty sure it's at the point when it is enabled, because both ways I did this (via a shortcut to the network connection and via Manage Devices) the system froze right at the point it usually says it is "Enabled", but before actually giving me that message.

Let me know if you need more specifics to solve this. TIA for any help you can give!

I bought a NetGear N900 Wifi Dual Band USB Adapter in order for my desktop to connect to our router wirelessly. My desktop is a Win7 Home Premium.

My initial problem started when the adapter would not install correctly from the CD-ROM (I followed the instructions very carefully). I kept getting error messages that the adapter could not be found. However, I was able to pull the driver from the CD and was told it installed successfully.

Here's my main problem: Under Network and Sharing Center > Change Adapter Settings, the Wireless Network Connection remains Disabled (or greyed out). Anytime I try to enable it, Windows will saying "Enabling ... Enabled" but it STILL remains Disabled.

Does anyone have any recommendations on getting this fixed?

Here's what I've done below:
-After the first unsuccessful install, I uninstalled NETGEAR and all its related pieces, uninstalled my antivirus (AVG), turned off Windows FW, rebooted, and attempted another clean NETGEAR installation. No success (and received the same console error message that the adapter could not be found).
-I also uninstalled third-party programs and turned off unnecessary services in the background. Still no success.
-Tried installing on different USB ports. Again, no success.
-Even had a live chat session with NETGEAR support but ended up being told that they exhausted all their support measures and recommended I return the product and get a new one. But this is the third DIFFERENT ada... Read more

Server Message Block (SMB) is a protocol natively supported by all
versions of Windows. Although nominally a file-sharing
protocol, it is used for other purposes as well, the most important
of which is disseminating group policy information from
domain controllers to newly logged on systems. Beginning with Windows
2000, it is possible to improve the integrity of SMB
sessions by digitally signing all packets in a session. Windows 2000
and Windows XP can be configured to always sign, never
sign, or sign only if the other party requires it.

A flaw in the implementation of SMB Signing in Windows 2000 and
Windows XP could enable an attacker to silently downgrade the
SMB Signing settings on an affected system. To do this, the attacker
would need access to the session negotiation data as it
was exchanged between a client and server, and would need to modify
the data in a way that exploits the flaw. This would
cause either or both systems to send unsigned data regardless of the
signing policy the administrator had set. After having
downgraded the signing setting, the attacker could continue to
monitor the session and change data within it; the lack of
signing would prevent the communicants from detecting the changes.

Although this vulnerability could be exploited to expose any SMB
session to tampering, the most serious case would involve
changing group policy information as it was being disseminated from a
Windows 2000 domain controller to a newly logged-on
netwo... Read more

My PC is custom built with a Netgear WG311V3 PCI Wireless card in it.

When I boot up, it tells me I am connectied to our wireless network, but no websites will load. I check for wireless networks but my PC tells me none are in range. I have had this issue before so I goto Network Connections and Disable Wireless Network Connection 2, my wireless card, and then when I goto Enable it I get this error:

I have no idea what to do, could the power outage have fried my wireless card?

Help and Support Center provides a centralized facility through
which users can obtain assistance on a variety of topics. For
instance, it provides product documentation, assistance in
determining hardware compatibility, access to Windows Update,
online help from Microsoft, and other assistance. Users and
programs can execute URL links to Help and Support Center by
using the "hcp://" prefix in a URL link instead of "http://".

A security vulnerability is present in the Windows Me version of
Help and Support Center, and results because the URL Handler for
the "hcp://" prefix contains an unchecked buffer.

An attacker could exploit the vulnerability by constructing a URL
that, when clicked on by the user, would execute code of the
attacker's choice in the Local Computer security context. The URL
could be hosted on a web page, or sent directly to the user in
email. In the web based scenario, where a user then clicked on
the URL hosted on a website, an attacker could have the ability
to read or launch files already present on the local machine. In
the case of an e-mail borne attack, if the user was using Outlook
Express 6.0 or Outlook 2002 in their default configurations, or
Outlook 98 or 2000 in conjunction with the Outlook Email Security

In general, when an product installs, it should register itself with
Internet Explorer. This allows the product to specify how Internet
Explorer should handle files associated with it when referenced from
a web page - for instance, it allows the product to specify whether
the user should be presented with a warning dialogue before such a
file is opened.

Visual FoxPro 6.0 does not perform this registration, and this gives
rise to a situation in which a web page could automatically launch a
Visual FoxPro application (i.e., an .app file). In most cases, this
would not result in a security vulnerability - because of the way
Visual FoxPro 6.0 evaluates file names, FoxPro itself could be
started but the .app file would typically not run. However, if the
filename of the application were constructed in a particular way, a
second error (associated with how Visual FoxPro 6.0 evaluates
application filenames) could not only start FoxPro but allow the
application to execute.

The vulnerability could be exploited by creating a web page that
references a Visual FoxPro application, and either hosting it on a
web site or sending it to a user as an HTML mail. If the user had
installed Visual FoxPro 6.0 - or had installed a product that
includes the Visual FoxPro 6.0 runtime - and the filename of the
application was constructed in a particular way, the application
would execute. This would enable the application to not only
interrogate databases, but also issue system commands in the u... Read more

I am using Microsoft driver for the above device. Drivers loaded ok, device manager seems to think it's fine. Device seems just fine (blue light flashing as it should). Anti-virus/external firewall (Zonealarm Exteme) etc all shut down (to find problem).
Primary ethernet connection disabled. Network and sharing Center (Change adapter settings) allows me to enable, says enabling, then enabled, however it never changes status and remains disabled.
Netgear driver (latest for win7 64 which I use) installs fine until final part 'detecting adapter' which fails - never gets there and needs to be forcefully terminated. I've removed the Netgear software entirely.
I've changed USB ports and done just about as much as I can. From a management point of view I hate windows7. To get to simple information it is far more difficult than previous OS's. As an example, I have no idea how to get my OS version number. I know
it is Windows7 64Bit Home edition but thats all I can say.
The network adapter works perfectly under XP-sp3 and this is dual-boot machine so hardware is obviously identical (apart from SSD boot for Win7 and HDD for XP).
Any help appreciated - or any questions I can answer to help me out!
Thanks, Dave.

Hi easily confused,

I did some checking, and it looks as if it might be a permission error. See HERE for details.

Also, if you are unable to get that sorted out, there is the option of using a replacement program called LibreOffice. See HERE to compare the two.

Hang in there with Win-10 as these bugs will resolve in time and sooner or later. The one thing that might help might be to do a clean install, rather than a basic upgrade. See HERE.

So, though i logon(locally) as administrator, i can't disable the password because the computer is still a member of the old network.
I haven't big problem with writing the password everytime i logon, but is there any way i can bypass the restrictions? If the only way is to reinstall windows, I don't think I'll bather to do so.
Thanks guys.

Uninstalled and reinstalled several times.
Any idea on how to solve it?

Hi everyone

I have an emachines em350, I installed win7 as a clean install onto a new hard drive.

It's al sweet except the sound and network adapters have not installed. In fact it seems that win7 is declaring they never existed in the first place.

I have retrieved the latest drivers, win7 spits them out stating that the devices are not present. I have tried the older versions using compatibility mode. I have tried install legacy hardware. I have tried to flush them out through command prompt.

Nothing.

The sound 'card' (which I believe to be onboard) is seen by device manager, but refuses to have anything*to do with drivers.

The LAN I also believe is part of the motherboard, but it just won't show at all.

For the love of all that is holy, please help me out if you can or I fear this netbook will be going out the window at a rate of knots.

Thanking you in advance

Hi Os Osment Welcome to the forums did you get the drivers from here eMachines Support - Downloads & Support Documents - Netbook / Netbook / 350 you may have to use the originallly installed drivers in compatibility mode to get the netbook to recognise these drivers correctly

Is this onboard Lan?
If you have the motherboard cd then the driver should on it.
If not download the driver from the motherboard makers website.
If you are not sure of the make and model of your board, download Everest

You
can access Command Prompt,reg-edit, and task manager on a computer where its disabled with no admin rights. You can do this by copying the files for Cmd,regedit, and task manager, to a writable location. Then you can edit them with a binary editor to run regardless
of the policies set up. . The reason this works is because when Microsoft was coding Windows, , they decided they'd rather have it be more open than closed. When the command line starts, it checks a value in the registry to see if it can run. When you do this
your changing the registry location it looks in. Therefore it doesn't find the restriction in the registry. As a result, it allows execution. Once you've changed this one binary value, it will work on any school, work, or home computer that has it disabled.
Also on 64 bit versions of windows 7 and 8 you also need to copy the En-US folder from System32 and paste it in the folder with the binary edited CMD file. This is so it can load all the commands properly. I am not responsible for what you do. Have fun. The
unicode strings are CMD- disablecmd, Regedit- disableregistrytools. You can also use this method to access a disabled task manager.
Note: When doing this put the files
into a place you can write to like a flash drive or the desktop, or else you won't be able to make the edits. You can do this all on a standard account. You don't need to be a Administrator.

I have a Toshiba Desktop on our 3-computer LAN that I bought used 2 or 3 years ago that has 2000 Server OS. No major problems until last Friday when my wife was online cleaning the webmail on her insightbb.com email account and her computer locked up. I did not know she had some earlier incidents of locking up in either Outlook or the accounting software on this PC. Previously she had a Win98 OS and was used to rebooting if there was a lockup. so this is what she did 2 or 3 times before letting me know there was a problem.

I had been getting error message: Service Control Manger At least one service or driver failed during system startup. Use event manager to examine the event log details. I found the error was 7000, looked on the Microsoft tech support under Q316500 and used the Rms.inf file to install the Removable Storage Manger in the WINNT\system32 folder.

However the machine will NOT startup normally. After restarting from safe mode it reaches LOG ON TO WINDOWS where you enter user and password.
Service Control Manager
At least one service or driver failed during system start up. Use event manager to examine the event log for details. As described above, I thought I had corrected the problem. But obviously have not. Incidently, I am WAY above my head in all this. I ma not an IT guy! Just someone trying to get his wife's home office computer working.

Thank you.

I have a computer that is running Windows 2000 Professional. It's up to date as far as drivers, patches, etc.

I have an application that requires a VPN connection to another site. The computer is located in an unattended location. If power goes out long enough for the UPS to run down or the ISP has trouble I want to have the VPN connection reestablish itself without having to drive to the site.

1. Is there a way to make the computer always establish the VPN connection at boot time?

2. If the ISP connection drops out the VPN asks me if I want it to try to reconnect. Is there a way to configure it so it always trys without asking?

A couple of weeks ago I installed Windows 8 (fresh install from scratch, not an update) on my computer. I do a lot of web browsing and over the last couple of weeks I've been using Windows 8, I could swear the web browsing wasn't as fast at it used to be on Windows 7.
I then noticed I was having major issues bringing up my router's control panel (ASUS RT-N56U) so thinking it was my router I upgraded the firmware. Turned out, the Avast Anti-Virus I was running has issues with Windows 8. I removed AVAST and turned on Windows Defender (which in Windows 8 is also an anti-virus program now referred to MSE - Miscrosoft Security Essentials). MSE has gotten fairly good reviews so I decided to use it, for maximum compatibility with Windows 8.

However, although the router control panel would now come up okay, browsing still seemed to not be quite as fast as it used to be. I sat down at the old 5-year old Dell Desktop next to me that is running Windows 7, both computers were connected to the router via Gigabit Ethernet. I tested network speeds with Speedtest.net to make sure they were both getting the same Internet speeds (which they were.) I found a couple 'heavy' web pages to test:

Epicurious.com: Recipes, Menus, Cooking Articles & Food Guides (home page)
sports.yahoo.com (home page)

The browsing was MUCH faster on the Windows 7 machine!! So I decided to do more of a controlled test.

I have mobile PCs deployed with users needing to modify network (IPv4) configuration settings as deployment scenarios change and ALSO need to adjust/change system time in order to synchronize with other devices.
I have set the User Rights Assignment (Local Security Policy) to allow the user/group "Change System Time" rights.
When I add the user account to the "Network Configuration Operators" Group, that user loses the ability to "Change System Time"; in fact, when attempting to change time, the user is prompted with the UAC popup showing ONLY administrator
accounts.
When I remove the user from the "Network Configuration Operators" group, the ability to "Change System Time" is restored.
I have tried to resolve this by adding the user to the "Power Users" group, but the conflict remains.
Users need to be able to both modify network configuration settings AND change system time without being added to the administrator group. How do I resolve this conflict?

I have a Win NT 4.0 Server (with DHCP and DNS services) running on the network as the PDC. I also am testing out a Win2000 Server that's setup as a Member Server. This W2k machine also is connected to our DSL line. I've tried to setup up Internet Connection Sharing via RRAS using the NAT capability, but with no success (MicroSoft's docs didn't help any when trying to follow there advice). I've also tried to set up ICS without NAT and choose the available protocals by going to the NIC card properties and enabling ICS there (RRAS is still active just without NAT), but also without success. Am I missing some crucial step here or is it not possible to run ICS on a W2K server without it being a Domain Controller?

Hi y'all.

I've just found out about this groovy new idea called ICS (Internet Connection Sharing), which means other computers on my home office LAN should be able to use the ADSL internet connection on my oldest machine, without me needing to buy a router.

Only problem is that my oldest machine runs Windows 2000. Anyone know if ICS is supported for W2k, and if so where do I find it and how can I enable it ?

Hi All..

I got knocked off line over the weekend and then was unable to log back in ..The help guys at my provider company tried to walk me through deleteing my internet connection and reinstalling same.
The problem is that the wizard would let me click on NEXT during the set up but it would not move?
I installed Norton Systemworks 03 Pro with Internet security and it found a total of 68 problems and claims to have fixed them but my wizard prob is still the same.

I guess all i can do now is reinstall Win2000Pro
Can anyone help?

I think what you are wanting is to turn on ?show icon in notification area when connected?
I haven?t used win 2000 for some time but if you can find your ?internet connections? right click on the icon for the connection that you are using to find its ?properties?

Then just click in the box ?show icon in notification area when connected?

I hope this points you in the right direction

I'll try and make this as succinct as possible since I'm not a tech and you are!

Everything was fine and dandy for months, until one fateful day when all of a sudden I started receiving error messages telling me that I had no server connection.

1. We run 3 PCs on a home network using a router

2. Both of the other 2 PCs are still operating properly and have all capabilities and connections.

3. I am running a bootleg version of Win 2000 Pro (remember, it's been working fine for over a year)

4. I recently installed something called SPYKILLER which is supposed to detect viruses and popups and kill those varmits dead on command.

5. I was using the dread IE through SBCYahoo (my provider) as browser, until the day my stepson, Linuxboy turned me on to Foxfire Mozilla, which he installed, and I thought was faster and better and best of all not a MS product.

6. Life was fine for 24 hours until I set my SPYKILLER on to scan all drives while I stepped out for Vietnamese food, and

7. Two hours later, I returned to the blue screen of death, and life was never the same again.

8. Upon rebooting, I received such delightful messages as:

WINHOST32.exe-application error

The instruction at 0x77f8910e referenced memory at

0x1483e6c. The memory could not be "read".
