XP Home rundll32.exe goes to 100 percent cpu on control panel, remove programs option

Q: XP Home rundll32.exe goes to 100 percent cpu on control panel, remove programs option

I'm running windows xp home edition, up to date on critical updates.

grisoft free, free zone alarm, ewido free spyware, spyware blaster, etc etc and none of them show a infection.

computer is about 3 years old a compaq presario with 512k real memory.

It came pre installed from compaq with XP home so I do not have a windows xp install diskette altho I think I did make the cd restore copies when I got the computer new.

My problem is when I go to control panel, remove software option, the screen displays Please wait while the list is being populated and it just runs and runs. I do a ctrl alt delete and bring up task manager and it shows 100 percent CPU utilization with rundll32.exe showing 99 percent cpu utilization.

computer seems to be runing ok, except for this.

my question is does anyone know what is causing this? If I delete rundll32.exe, can I restore it from somewhere as I do not have the XP install disk due to the factory XP install.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello All,

I have been trying to solve a Zone Alarm problem, but the fix seems to have turned into a Windows problem. I hope someone can help me.

I've used ZoneAlarm Security Suite for several years now, but during the past year I have been unable to install upgrades. Usually the process gets stuck during the uninstall of the old version. SO this time I tried to manually uninstall first. It seemed to work (via Add/Remove Programs) and then I tried installing the new version, but it got stuck while copying files over.

On the Zonealarm Forum I got some help from someone who gave me some instructions to follow to "completely" uninstall all zonealarm (zonelabs) files. Following these instructions (which I'll post below) appeared to have removed Zonealarm, but I still could not install the new version - it got stuck at the exact same point while copying files over.

So now I don't have the old version and can't install the new version.
Now to the Windows problem. (Thanks for your patience)

Everything else on my PC seems to be working fine. Email, internet, other programs...but then I went to use Photoshop Elements and it started up by showing me the user license and asking for acceptance (which it hasn't done since I installed it over a year ago). I accepted it and then got the following message:Your Adobe Photoshop Elements username, organization, or serial number is missing or invalid. The application can not continue and must close. So I figured this m... Read more

A:Missing Add/Remove option in Control Panel

Hello and welcome to TSF

Click Start, Run and type REGEDIT. This starts the Registry Editor. Navigate to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE \Microsoft\Windows \CurrentVersion\Uninstall\<Program Name>
( <Program Name> here is Adobe Photoshop Elements)
*
In the right-pane, do the following:

Double-click NoRemove (REG_DWORD) and set it to 0
Double-click NoModify (REG_DWORD) and set it to 0

If NoRemove is set to 1, the Remove button will be unavailable
If NoModify is set to 1, the Change button will be unavailable
info

This should help with Adobe Photoshop Elements.

Now, for ZA.

Try using the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility. As long as you installed the application using the Windows Installer, this utility will remove all the folders, files, registry keys, and entries from your system and allow you to start over with a clean slate.

Download the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility
Locate and run msicuu2.exe to install the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility.
Locate and launch the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility on the Start menu.
From the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility window, locate the application in the list and click the Remove button.
Once the application has been removed, click the Exit button to close the utility.

I have had this problem on 2 Win2K computers now. It is caused somehow by USB installations. The latest was installing a HP 3570C USB scanner. The scanner software did not work properly after install, and when I went to the control panel (add/remove) [appwiz.cpl] the program has a large blank area where usually the programs show. (The message is "there are no programs installed on this computer") However, I can scroll down and see the programs listed, but if I click on any entry I get ""mshta.exe has generated errors and will be closed by windows. An error log is being created"

When I go to event viewer I get, "The application, mshta.exe, generated an application error. ...The exceprion generated was c0000005 at address 75B5EB55 (DllGetClassObject)"

Anybody see this before, Ideas?

All help greatly appreciated.

Hi larryjr88. . .

Welcome to the Tech Support Forum - Vista Support!

I would use CCleaner found HERE. Simply download CCleaner, install, Right-click on the CCleaner icon, Select "Run as Administrator", select "Tools" (left side - center), and a list of installed programs should appear.

Typically, CCleaner lists more installed programs than Windows Uninstall Programs does.

Good Luck to you.

We know how poorly uninstalls clean up, so as I've done before, I ran REGEDIT and deleted all remaining entries (or so I thought). When I went to re-install the program (it had some issues originally), a pop-up box from the application appeared with no text, and no links to installing it.

I went to Control Panel, selected Add/Remove programs and the related pop-up box appeared with Add/Remove programs in the title and the description of the add/remove feature. The programs never filled in.

I suspect I messed up a registry entry but can't figure out which one as yet. Has anyone ever heard of this happening or know how to fix it?

Being the DUMAS that I am, I neither backed up the registry nor used the Last Known Good option when I had the opportunity (I didn't think about it until it was too late.).

You might have to remove the hard drive from this computer and install it in another computer as a slave drive and after it is able to be accessed by Windows on that computer you will have to manually backup all of your important data that you have to another media like CD-R's, DVD or Thumb drive. Then when this is done return it to the original computer as a master drive on the primary IDE cable and do the following:

REGISTRY WARNING: The details that follow require an above-average understanding of the technical topics involved. If you do not understand the Registry material presented here, either find a technically knowledgeable friend or do not attempt to repair your system Registry yourself. Improper changes in the System Registry can render all data on your hard disk inaccessible.
I hope you have the Windows software for this machine. Please give this a try and print it out for reference

I got some type of virus a few days ago that has changed my administrative priviledges. Initially I was not able to access task manager or the registry. Now I cannot get into my control panel. The viruses that Norton has caught are: backdoor.trojan (ksacre.exe), hacktool.rootkit (ksacre.exe), trojan.srizbi, trojan.spamthru, trojan.perfcoo, trojan.killav. Even though Norton says it cleaned them, they still pop up.

Please help....Thanks.

Hi there, I hope you smart people can help. When I go to my control panel, the add/remove programs button and the regional/language options display as icons that are not registered/recognised/associated with any program and if I click on them nothing happens. This happens in both the classic view and categories view.

I am not to sure when this first happened and I have been doing some "fixing" on my pc - so I guess I broke it.

I am currently running XP Home Edition and have installed SP3. I seem to recall these options being available after the install so I do not believe this is the problem. I have also recently installed Windows Blinds and I have seen that non XP themes can play some havoc with some of these controls. So I have unloaded Windows Blinds and have reverted back to the original XP themes, still no luck.

I have also recently added RegCure and Error Smart (I have seen that you do not advise on these - too late however, so perhaps these registry fixes have caused this.

I also run PC Tools Spyware Doctor and Anti Virus and the databases are up to date and have been run every other day with no problems for the past few runs. Worst I have had is some tracking cookies installed, which I always remove.

In trying to resolve this problem I have tried the following:
1. As mentioned above removed Windows Blinds and reverted themes back to XP original
2. Googled and before coming across your site saw one suggesting the following:

I seem to remember reading somewhere a method to remove program entries from the Programs list that are no longer applicable, ie when the program has been removed but somehow leaves an entry in the list. Can anyone help please?

A:Control Panel -Add/Remove Programs (Extraneous debris)

Note :- backup your Regsitry

To remove the invalid from the Add/Remove applet manually

Start Registry Editor (Regedit.exe).
Locate the following key in the registry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall
Look for the name of the program with the orphaned entry.
Delete the entire listing for the software with the orphaned entry.
Close the registry editor.

HelloI hope someone will be able to help me. Earlier this evening, I decided to have a look at the list of programs (via Control Panel) which I have on my pc and noticed that a whole load of stuff has been added and the 'add/remove' buttons have disappeared. Things which have been added include:BufferChmCP_Atenashokunin1configCP_CalendarTemplates1CP_Package_Variety1and many more.I've run Ad-aware and it picked up tracking cookies. Have just done a HJT log and will post it at the end of this message. My homepage is www.virginmedia.com and I'm wondering what all the other "ie.redirect.hp.com" bits at the beginning of the report relate to? I don't have any HP products (pc is a Compaq) and I definitely (well, not that I'm aware of anyway) didn't say 'yes' to installing any other software. Please please help .Thank you.AliceLogfile of Trend Micro HijackThis v2.0.2Scan saved at 23:24:42, on 13/11/2007Platform: Windows XP SP2 (WinNT 5.01.2600)MSIE: Internet Explorer v7.00 (7.00.6000.16544)Boot mode: NormalRunning processes:C:\WINDOWS\System32\smss.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\winlogon.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\services.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\lsass.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exeC:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exeC:\Program Files\Lavasoft\Ad-Aware 2007\aawservice.exeC:\WINDOWS\Explorer.EXEC:\WINDOWS\ehome\ehtray.exeC:\WINDOWS\RTHDCPL.EXEC:... The computer is running Windows XP Professional SP3. When I go into Control Panel>Add or Remove Programs, there are no options showing for "Remove" or "Change" program. I took this issue up in the Infection forum and tried to get it resolved there. However I couldn't fix the problem. After doing a registry backup, I performed tweak #337 in Kelly's Korner, as instructed, and then attempted a System File Checker "scannow" repair. The problem still exists. Anybody got any ideas?

A:Control Panel>Add or Remove Programs not allowing program removal

Caution is advised - at your own risk.As it involves a registry edit, backup up your registry first with a program such as ERUNT and you may also want to create a system restore point.See this link:Some applications in Add/Remove Programs list are missing Change and Remove buttons:http://www.winxptutor.com/arpbuttons.htmThis assumes that your system is not infected.

Hi, I am new to this forum but I have a real problem other advice has not helped. I am operating a Windows XP Dell PC with Broadband access from Comcast. In the last 3-4 weeks we have seen a degradation in the speed of the PC and plenty of annoying pop-ups every 5 minutes. We have also found that Google is trying to take over the Homepage from our default Comcast Homepage. It's a real mess. What I need is instruction to get back Administrator Privileges, access to control panel et al. Then we want to stop the annoy pop-up telling us we have a "Windows Security Alert" box indicating we had a serious infection and need to download some software. I have followed your instruction and downloaded the software recommended that includes: Ad-Aware, Spybot, Super-Antispyware-Free Edition, Windows Defender and the personal firewall Bitdefender. I have run the scans in Safemode as recommended and have downloaded the Hijackthis software and ran the scan. Attached is the file. Hello VTSkeeter, I hear it is snowing in VT. It looks like you have several nasty infections on this computer, so this will take a while to remove all the malware. When I try to click on certain things (control panel, computer, etc...) It is hit or miss whether I will get the program I want to reach. Usually the screen blinks off and wont let me access anything. Trend micro shows nothing. I tried using Housecall but it wont even start to scan the system. Here is the hijack this log. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!!

I have managed to get explorer.exe to work again to facilitate accomplishing the steps outlined in "before you post" section. Another symptom is a re-direct bug for searches in internet explorer. Also, some icons don't show up on the desktop (all office programs, itunes, maxtor manager, safari, google earth). The security settings also won't allow me to run windows defender (I get an error at startup and if I try to start it via services.msc i get Error 5: Access is denied.) and some anti-malware programs (even in as admin in safe mode) nor will it properly update via windows update website (all fail at install).
