Keys on ThinkPad X220 Tablet activate other keys / double characters

Q: Keys on ThinkPad X220 Tablet activate other keys / double characters

Hi everyone, The problem happened unexpectedly, i.e., I didn't install any software, didn't update the BIOS, didn't change the hardware. Just one morning after the laptop booted as usual (in Linux), the problem appeared and keeps on appearing every morning ever since. The problem: each key on the column "9-o-l-." when pressed started to activate (also) another key on the keyboard: "9" activates F11, "o" increases the audio volume, "l" mutes the audio speaker, and "." mutes the microphone. This is even visible on the keyboard LEDs "Speaker muted" and "Microphone muted."The problem appears consistently in both Windows and Linux, and even before any OS boots (on the BIOS/Setup screen). However, after the laptop works for about an hour, the problem disapears (i.e., the keys don't activate other keys) and it does not appear until the next time I boot on the next day. I ran the keyboard tests on Windows and they passed.Strangely enough, Shift +(problematic key) works correctly, i.e., gives the uppercase character of the corresponding key. However, Alt+(problematic key) gives the same problem as without Alt.The following workaround works: I disable (in Linux) the shortcuts for the affected audio controls, so when "o" or "l" is pressed, the expected character "o" or "l" gets properly typed and is shown. Key "." cannot be deactivated as shortcut, but it both mutes the speaker and also correctly types "." (so annoying, but workable). Thus, it appears that when key "o" is pressed, it activates both the character "o" and the speaker mute. Because of some reason, the speaker mute gets handled with priority, so the character "o" is not shown. But by disabling the speaker mute in the Linux settings, the character "o" gets typed and is shown on the screen. Similarly for key "l".Since the problem disappears after the laptop works for about 1h, alhough I am not working on it during this time, so I don't type on the keyboard (it just does a backup to external drive), I thought that it's temperatura related. So I tried to raise the temperature from the start by running computationally intensive tasks (=playing a video). The laptop heats up, but the problem persists. One bracket: the problem appeared after a week during which the laptop worked intensively and it's temperature was systemally higher, so it may have overheated during this time. But after the problem appeared, I put the laptop on an external pad with fans, reduced the CPU performance to Balanced in the BIOS, and make sure that it doesn't get very heated while working (=reduced its workload).Connecting an external USB keyboard works correctly. What I did so far: I removed the keyboard and cleaned with cotton and alcohol both the male and female parts (plug and socket) of the connector at the end of the cable which connects the keyboard to the system board. I also scratched the connector pins with a pin and with a screwdriver in order to remove possible corrosion/rust or other small particles. I disconnected and connected the cable multiple time. I also pressed the keyboard cable at various places to see if it is a bad wire and at the same time pressed the problematic keys.Any advice what to do? Does this look like a solely keyboard issue, so replacing the keyboard will be enough, or a motherboard replacement may be necessary? Thank you.

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

So, I boot up my laptop and notice I can't type my password in, so I log in with my fingerprint, I open up notepad and notice that my 4 5 R T F G V B, Left Shift, and Left Ctrl keys all don't work. I also noticed that they're all keys that are staggered vertically (with the exception of the modifiers).I went to a keyboard tester site to get a visual representation of the keys that don't work.Notice the chunk in the middle of unhighlighted keys. I've taken my laptop apart before, so I pulled out the keyboard and inspected the keyboard connector and socket and found no tarnishing, bent pins, etc on them.Is there a way to diagnose if this is a keyboard or a motherboard issue?

Hello,I have an annoying issue with my X1 Yoga: almost every time I put it in tablet mode, the key covergets a bit stuck around some keys and I need to press them a lotharder to get an input. It usually gets stuck either around arrow keys, spacebar, X and C. It's currentlystuck on the spacebar and I'm having a hardtime typing this message. It usually gets a bit betterif I put it back in tablet mode and help itgodown while getting it back to "laptop" mode, but it doesn't completely solve it.Does any of you have this issue? How do you solve it? Do I need to send it to a repair center? Thank you. P.S: I deliberately didn't correct any typing mistakes the keyboard mademe do so you know how annoying it is. Hello,How can I get the home and end keys near the arrow keys on my keyboard without losing page up and page down?I'm a power screen reader user and use the home and end keys once every 5 minutes and I use the computer for around 9-10 hours a day. This means there is a whole lot of moving my hand from the arrow keys to the top of the keyboard. After a day of using my new laptop, my arm is starting to hurt from moving from the bottom to the top of the keyboard so much. What most manufacturers do is have fn+left be home and fn+right be end. They also have fn+up be page up and fn+down be page down. I would love this! Currently the page up and page down keys are right above the arrow keys. FN + page up and down being mapped to home and end would be great as well. I can't figure out how to map fn keystrokes using something like Auto Hot Key though. I would be OK with swapping the home and end keys with the page up and down keys, but I can't figure out how to do that either. Auto Hot Key does not work 100% of the time and I need this functionality 100% of the time. What method would be the best for me to get home and end by the arrow keys?

Hi, Yesterday I bought a used X220 Tablet - the version with Gorilla Glass - and installed Windows 10 Pro (64 bit) on it.What a great little computer this is! But what disappointed me was the lack of precision of the pen that came with the tablet. Unfortunately I could not find a setting - or program - to calibrate the pen. On this forum I learned that a lot of owners have to deal with a pen that is not accurate. On one of the posts I read it was mentioned that the digitizer in the X220 Tablet is made by Wacom, so I went their website for a recent drivers. Luckily, I soon found an appropriate tool, the Wacom Hardware Check, on ftp://ftp.wacom-europe.com/pub/WINDOWS/WacomHardwareCheck.exe . After downloading and running it, I was told:"You have hardware that is compatible with the Wacom FEEL driver. You can download the latest driver here: http://www.wacom.com/feeldriver " The URL led to a file on http://cdn.wacom.com/u/drivers/TabletPC/ISD_DualTouch_732-12.exeThe file is about 24 Mb in size. After downloading and installing it, I was able to calibrate the screen, with 25(!) calibration points. Accuracy is great now; not only in landscape, but also in portrait mode! Since I found no reference on this forum to the Wacom FEEL driver in combination with the X220 Tablet running on Windows 10, I thought it might be interesting to others in this forum. Cheers!

Hello, Has anyone tried installation of a sierra wireless MC7750 card on a X220 tablet? I've gotten hold of a MC7750 and intend to install it on my X220 tablet and try it with Verizon 4G network. Thanks,Anand

A:Thinkpad X220 Tablet - Installation of sierra wire...

I have not tried it, but I can tell you that most likely it will not work in the default configuration.  Lenovo machines have a whitelist that checks to see if the WWAN card inserted into the machine is regonized and certified.  If the machine doesn't recognize the card it will display an 1804 error.  Since Lenovo doesn't yet sell these cards yet, it's unlikely that this card is on their whitelist. Some people modify their BIOSes to recognize cards that Lenovo hasn't put on their list yet.  I believe you can find such moded BIOSes here: http://www.bios-mods.com/forum/Thread-Removed-whitelist-removal-Lenovo-ThinkPad-x220-v1-21 or alternatively maybe in the forums in http://www.mydigitallife.info/ There may be newer versions of the BIOS in the same forum, but I haven't checked in a while. I've been waiting for months for Lenovo to support the MC7750, or another LTE card like it.  I've been told by several sales people that "it's right around the corner".  Pretty much hogwash so far.  I haven't gone the step of ordering one of these card yet hoping that Lenovo will officially support it soon.  Please post back though if you do end up moding your bios.  I'm curious to know how well it works.  Also read up on taping pin 20.  Some people say it's necessary in addition to moding the bios. Good luck.

Hi! I'm using Win7 in portuguese (pt-PT) and the calculator has some some keys with strange symbols in them. So, instead of the backspace arrow, there's a rectangle, and the "x" was replaced by a square. In scientific mode it's even worse.

I've already restored windows fonts through the control panel. I've renamed the calc.exe.mui and nothing. I've even tried downloading an english version posted in these forums, but it didn't work. Even the language remained the same.

Any thoughts on this?

Thanks in advance.

Hello forum!
I have this Acer Aspire 5715z notebook downgraded to XP with an italian keyboard layout on which there are three disabled keys; a sign key, a $ sign key (both right above the arrows) and the Acer Applications Launch key on the up right corner of the computer.

Normally these Acers are shipped with Vista but I don't know if they worked under it, the first thing I did when I got the computer was downgrading So anyway, there are a bunch of keys I need and these keyboards don't have so I was trying to remap the keyboard but Windows XP doesn't seem to recognise them (I downloaded a couple of programs like SharpKeys but none of them worked).
I think the problem might be that there are no reg values assigned to them but I am not sure of this.
Is there anybody who can help me out with this little nuisance please?
Thanks for the attention

A:How to activate unused keyboard keys

So until I had a response from you guys I decided to modify my right shift key to the tilde I needed modifying the registry but I encountered a very strange problem;
According to the scan codes the value for the tilde is 29 00 and that of the right shift is 36 00 so I added this string value: 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 02 00 00 00 29 00 36 00 00 00 00 00
Now in theory everything should have been ok but instead of imposing the key to the tilde I ended up having this "\" which is 2B 00. Then I wrote 2B 00 instead of 29 00 and had this "".
What the name of everything?? Scan codes are supposed to be hardcoded right??
What is wrong with my Windows???

I have a Sony Vaio VGN-CR363. Since last evening, I'm facing a problem with the four arrow keys. They type strange characters.

The up key ends up tying "oig". The down key ends up typing a backslash. RIght key types "LJH" and left key types ",mn". This is happening in all the applications - office, notepad, browser, etc. It's the same characters every time, not some random characters. For example, if I turn the Num Lock on, the "oig" becomes "65g".

All other keys are working absolutely fine. Only these four keys are an issue. These also work fine for 2-3 mins in between suddenly, and then go back to their erratic but predictable ways!!

I tried uninstalling the driver and then reinstalling, cleaning the keyboard (the keys are absolutely in shape visually). As a heavy user of Office, I am finding it impossible to handle this even for a day...

Please help with a solution/ suggestion....

A:Keyboard problem - arrow keys type junk characters

In our experience with the Vaio keyboards, you have reached the time when a replacment NEW keyboard is the best option.
Sometimes, turning the keyboard upside down and giving it a thorough cleaning with difluoroethane gas such as Dust Off (a lot of it) will take care of it... but not often.

I have 4 copies of Windows 7 Home Premium on pre-order that should be delivered within the next few days.

I also purchased the $30 "Educational" download of Windows 7 Home Premium, downloaded it, and created a DVD.

I was able to install the EDU version without incident on one PC, however I haven't activated that install yet.

My question is this: Can I use the EDU install DVD to upgrade/clean install my and my family's PCs without activating yet, then just activate later using the RETAIL keys once they arrive?

This is an odd issue that I have not found anyone else having. I am not sure as to the cause of it.

Basically, when I press certain pairs of keys, the computer acts as though another key is being pressed as well.
Some examples:
q+s: qws
w+d: wed
r+y: ryu
k+u: kui
l+i: lio

There are others, as well as ones with 3 keys triggering a fourth. They follow no general pattern (although wd, qs, ku, and li are the same pattern
on the keyboard, that pattern doesn't cause a similar response on other keys, like ef, rg, th, yj, etc.)

This problem has persisted as long as I have had this laptop. I got it used on Amazon. It said that, in terms of condition, it just had a few minor
scratches and such, which is accurate.

This occurs every time the keys are pressed at the same time (in fact, while typing this, I was constantly having to correct typos such as "everyu",
"lioke",  and "whiole".)

Two questions:

1. This first one is a question about what two registry keys do. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > SYSTEM > CurrentControlSet > services > Tcpip > Parameters > DNSRegisteredAdapters > *Corresponding NIC*. What are the Flags, and RegisteredSinceBoot
keys? What do they do?
2. I attempt to change the values of these keys. They go back to their original values if I restart, log in, or run ipconfig /registerdns.

Here is some background. I am on an IT engineering, and I have been looking into a DNS issue we have had for quite some time. The issue is that our AD DNS server records do not update for about half of our machines. We have timestamps dating back a couple of
months (I know, I know, scavenge. The team in charge of that is in the process of getting that set). I have been looking into a multitude of things to ensure all computers' DNS records update.

In my testing, I have checked several machines and notice that those keys mentioned above have the values of- flags = 2, and registeredsinceboot = 1. On the computers that aren't updating their values are 0. I have attempted to change to 2 and 1 on a computer
that isn't updating, but the values always revert back to 0.

Perhaps the issue we are seeing isn't related at all to the keys presented, but if you can help me identify the purpose of these keys, and how to save the values if changed, that would be greatly appreciated. At least for testing purpose.

The title may sound a bit odd, but here's my problem (I tried searching the internet, with no result):

I'm creating my own ancient greek layout, but I can't get the dead keys to work. Alt Gr normally works, but not with the dead keys.

´ + α should give ά, but instead, pressing ' once returns ´´ (i.e. 2 accents), and pressing a afterwards has no effect (besides adding an α). Why is this?

Furthermore, pressing AltGr+' should return the dead key ῀, but instead, it does nothing. Pressing a afterwards just returns an α.

Hi, Try the following. Download the AMD HD Graphics installer on the following link and save it to your Downloads folder. http://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp74501-75000/sp74716.exe When done, open your Downloads folder, right click the AMD Graphics installer and select 'Run as Administrator' to start the installation. When this has completed, shutdown the notebook. Unplug the AC Adapter and then remove the battery.  Hold down the Power button for 30 seconds.  Re-insert the battery and plug in the AC Adapter. Tap away at the esc key as you start the notebook to launch the Start-up Menu and then select f10 to enter the bios menu.  Press f9 to load the defaults ( this is sometimes f5, but the menu at the bottom will show the correct key ), use the arrow keys to select 'Yes' and hit enter.  Press f10 to save the setting and again use the arrow keys to select 'Yes' and hit enter. Start the notebook and let Windows fully load for a few minutes before checking. Regards, DP-K

Hey Everyone

Started typing on my internal laptop keyboard today and reliased that mainly keys a b and n were not working.
So I decided to clean them by taking off the key and white holder, then used a cloth to clean all the dust etc.. both under the rubber button and around it. This still didn't work however, so I then decided to uninstall and reinstall the driver as well. However this didn't work either.

Its probably best to try and buy a new one off e-bay, but before I do this does anyone else have any suggestions?

Also interesting, a b and n seems to be a popular combination of keys for other toshiba laptops that don't seem to be working... (Using a USB keyboard atm to type which works fine)

In my data base, I have one main table related to many slave tables in one-to-many relationships. I would like the primary key in the main table to populate to the other tables, as a foriegn key, without having to type it in each time I create a record in one of the other slave tables. Any ideas?

A:Solved: Populating primary keys as foriegn keys into tables.

Jiimandjo, welcome to the Forum.
Well you should be using Forms & Subforms for your data entry. When you link the Main form (based on the main table) to the Subform via the master key/foriegn key Access auto populates the foriegn key for you as soon as you enter soem data in to the subform.

Hi, I completely reinstalled windows 8.1 pro on my ThinkPad Yoga. After that I installed all drivers including updates provided by Microsoft and Lenovo (using Lenovo system updater 5). But I can't use all FN keys (meaning the special functions like opening the windows 8 settings pane bar...) Also the orange led is lighted up on the F1 key (I guess this should indicate that my speakers are muted - but this led is always on). What should I do or what do I have to install in addition to use all FN special keys including the correct indication of the mute-LED?

A:ThinkPad Yoga FN keys

download ThinkVantage System Update, it should download the necessary driver package for you.

Hey, Just a got a brand new Thinkpad 540-E. So far this CPU runs like a beast(with a new SSD installed). I have one minor issue though... GOAL:: Make the F1-F12 keys function without having to press Fn first. So I've tried the three tips I've come across online. Here is what happens: 1. BIOS(ThinkpadSetup): I only get the option to switch the Fn and Ctrl key. There are no option in my BIOS to do anything else with the keyboard/mouse settings. 2. Holding down the Fn key for 30 sec to 1 minute: Nothing happens. I even tried to do a three minute press and hold. I had a blast, but nothing came out of that neither. 3. Entering the keyboard settings in Win 7 manually: So I have no trouble entering the keyboard settings window, but mine looks extreemly limited. I don't see any options looking similar to what I see suggested on this forum.  In fact I see no options to do anything in there besides updating the driver. I hope you guys can help me out! Thanks a lot:-)

Hi all, i did something really stupid today. I wanted to clean underneath my thinkpad's keyboard, but i couldnt figure out how. unlike my friend's keyboard, i couldnt simply take out the keys and wipe underneath. So i decided to use a vacuum cleaner.

I just didnt know what strength to put it at.

Now, i've got my caps lock sucked up into my vacuum cleaner. After recovering it from the vacuum's bag (messy stuff) and cleaning it, i can see that it isnt cracked or broken anywhere, both at the hinge(on the laptop) or the key itself. But for the love of god i have no idea how to fix it back in. It isnt just "push it in and click". Anyone help please?

Hey guys,

I'm having a really big problem with my keyboard. I'm running windows 7. The problem started about four days ago, I've searched for various ways to solve this problem but I couldn't find any.

The issue is that randomly, my keyboard will stop typing keys and every time I hit a key, instead of typing a key, it would act as if I was hitting a shortcut. Such as, when it happens i hit the "F" key and the tools options come up. This happens on every windows even on MSN messenger, I hit my keys and it hits shortcut keys for the window I'm on.

I would be using my computer for a while and the keys would work fine but then a little later, somethings 30 minutes sometimes an hour or two, randomly they turn into shortcut keys. Every key i hit, I tried a new keyboard but it seems to happen also. I don't get the issue, I've scanned fully using malwareBytes, MCAffee, and Advanced system pro, but it's still happening. It's really frustrating and annoying when it does happen. I've turned my keyboard off and on, re sync'd. I'm starting to lean more towards it being a virus or something that messed with my settings somehow.

Malwayre Bytes did find something while scanning

files\Spigot\wtxpcom\components\widgitoolbarff.dll (Adware.WidgiToolbar) -> Quarantined and deleted successfully.

I'm really stumped here, I haven't tried un-installing my keyboard & re installing it but Idk what good t... Read more

A:Keyboard keys randomly turn into shortcut keys

I would also like to add that, when this occurs. I have to restart my computer for the keyboard to work correctly. It's wireless & I've tried a wired keyboard also, it's the same issue.

Also when this happens, while on the internet. Every time I click a link or the internet like "home" "news" anything at all on the internet even an image, it won't go to it but instead it will download the data into my computer... It's very strange & I'm completely stumped on what to do. Or to even search this on google for other similar issues, I don't even know how I would go around to search that. Or what I would type in the search bar. This happens with both Firefox & google chrome. Even outside the internet in just my desktop, it's impossible to type even on notepad.
