Blank Tasbar Icon

Q: Blank Tasbar Icon

Everynow and then this blank taskbar icon would appear in my taskbar and it would dissappear, I have spyware and virus scanned numerous times but cannot figureout what it is. Can somebody help me out? I want to get rid of it from appearing again, becuase it brings my comp out of screensaver and stuff and it's annoying.

Preferred Solution: Blank Tasbar Icon

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

alright i see u use xp

so, right click the task bar (or whatever you call that bar at the bottom of the screen) and hit properties

in "Notification Area", open Customize

Scroll down to "Past Items"

Find the blank icon and find the name of the program.

And if you can't find it, then open Task Manager (Ctrl+Alt+Delete) and go to Processes and monitor all processes (wastes a lot of time)

Download http://downloads.andymanchesta.com/RemovalTools/SDFix.exe and save it to your Desktop.

Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)

Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
· Restart your computer
· After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
· Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
· Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
· Choose your usual account.
· Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
· Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
· It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
· Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
· When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
· Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt
(Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).
· Finally paste the contents of the Report.txt back on the forum with a new HijackThis log

Hello forum,

i have the following problem and may you could help me:

I managed my task bar that its represented in double height with large icon (Quicklaunch Bar). As the new task bar looks like in Windows 7.
The problem is every time Vista starts the task bar is simply represented again, but not in double height. Then I must make the Attitudes again new each time (Quicklaunch Bar, options, large symbols, lock task bar).
Is there a possibility, perhaps by Script, which my attitudes are taken over when starting?
I have Admin rights on vista.

Thanks in advance

Why the Taskbar does not open up a minimized folder when a file is dragged over it ?
On my desktop running Windows Vista x 64 and Internet Explorer I have got the following problem.
I have a folder whit several subfolders where I keep copies of interesting information.
The folder is named “Computer Tips Folder” and the subfolders are divided in groups, ex: Internet problems, Vista, Windows 7, and Information.
After pasting into Windows Word an interesting article I save it into Documents. Them I open one of the mentioned subfolders and “minimize” it. When I try to drag the file over the Taskbar the subfolder does not open up.
The weird thing is that I can put the file into the subfolder, if I do it in Documents, is to say, I have to drag the file into “Computer Tips Folder”, open “Computer Tips Folder”, and drag the file into the corresponding subfolder.
More confusing yet, this behave does not occur with every folder in Documents. Before everything was running smooth and perfect.
My question is: Why the Taskbar does not open up a folder when I drag a file over it ?. How I can solve the problem ?.
I will appreciate very much any help

Hi, I had already posted this issue on the OS forum but someone suggested that my problem might be caused by a virus. I have a Dell Inspiron 1501 with WXP. Everything was fine until I plugged my camera to download some pics, first it didnt detect anything but then it worked and suddenly the Taskbar notification area Icons started to be very slow, when I double click on them it takes a few minutes for them to open, if they open at all, and just stop responding specially the power meter and the volume, when I right click on them the options just get stuck there and wont go away blocking the view of the other icons, and it wont let me choose any of them, the volume icon and the internet connection icon will no change even if the volume or signal have changed. Also, the laptop will shutdown by itself, like when you close the lid and the typing in any program became really really slow, but I fixed that already. Please help!! LILI

Hello everyone,
I have searched for working solution on my problem but couldn't find one.
My task-bar is set to auto hide mod, but when I'm using some application with few windows opened, whenever the action is required in specific window the task-bar is popping up with flashing bar of that window. I try to disable this by tweaking registry: ForegroundLockTimeout set to 0 or 1 (different forums give different numbers) and ForegroundLockTimeout set to 0. But this not working for me. Notification area has nothing to deal with this applet because it is not there. So anybody know solution how to stop task-bar from flashing and popping out? Temporary I use small tool called HideTaskbar but this is not what I want to.

Sorry if this is already been posted, I did a search and couldn't find it.
A lot of of people seem to be wanting to have the labels on the taskbar buttons hidden but without combining. This option is not availble in the settings.

Here is all you have to do:
Run Registry Editor (RegEdit).
Navigate to the following registry key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\ControlPanel\Desktop\WindowMetrics
Right click on a blank space on the right pane, select New, then String Value.
Name the new string value as MinWidth.
Double click on “MinWidth”, and set its value data as one of the following, depending on Taskbar is using normal (large) icons or small Icons:
Normal icons: 56
Small icons: 40

You could just simply download reg file from below which will do it instanly for you

A:Tasbar Icons - Hide Labels, Never Combine

The major problem I have with Win7 after 5 months is the way taskbar buttons are highlighted instead of being pushed. I have trouble figuring out which window is active when I ungroup the windows because the highlight simply can not distinguish between them having a glassy monitor and glassy visual effects. I certainly do not want to go to Win2k visual style but if there was a way to fix the taskbar coloring problem that would be great!

I had this posted on the seven forums but tested and working perfectly in Windows 8 too.

A lot of of people seem to want to have the labels on the taskbar buttons hidden but without combining. This option is not available in the settings. To do this, simply download the attached reg file and run it as administrator, then restart your computer.

NOTE: There are 2 attached reg files, one for large icons and one for small icons. Please make sure you download the correct one to your preference.

Run Registry Editor (RegEdit).Navigate to the following registry key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\ControlPanel\Desktop\WindowMetricsRight click on a blank space on the right pane, select New, then String Value.Name the new string value as MinWidth.Double click on ?MinWidth?, and set its value data as one of the following, depending on Taskbar is using normal (large) icons or small Icons:

Are there still issues with a vertical taskbar? I am still getting labels with some icons. Using normal (not small) icons, StartIsBack, medium DPI and the taskbar is as narrow as possible. Horizontal seems to be working fine, there are no labels.

I just re-installed the OS after upgrading the MOBO and RAM 2 days ago. When I stream videos on line, I usually select the full screen option. In the past, the video would automatically take up the entire screen of the monitor. Now, even if I select 'Full Screen Mode', the task bar still shows at the bottom of the screen. This does not happen if I'm watching a DVD, only when I stream movies/videos online.

I checked my browser but didn't see any options for that sort of thing. Seems like it's a setting somewhere in Windows that needs to be changed.

I know that in the properties dialogue for the task bar I can check 'Hide the taskbar'. I'd like to know what to do to have the task bar automatically hide itself when I stream videos. Can anybody help me with this?

When I create a shortcut desktop icon which links to an MS-DOS "EXE" file, the desktop icon is blank (just white with no Icon). When I go to the Properties window and select an Icon, the selected Icon shows up on the "Program" sheet but not on the "General" sheet - of the Properties window. How do I get Vista to show the selected Icon on the desktop?

So you are making shortcut of cmd.exe?

Well I tried it and my icon shows right. I think best course of action would be try aplying some other icon to your shortcut (I have non english Vista so I'm not 100% sure about name of tabs) Properties -> Program -> Change Icon -> Browse You can use any exe file with icon or %systemroot%System32/Imageres.dll has some general icons.

If other icons work and you want original icon back just change icon to what you find from %systemroot%System32/cmd.exe

Okay, as the title states I'm getting blank paper icons, but only in one specific folder. Any folder in my Documents folder refuses to show the windows 8 folder icon.
And some folders inside of any of the said initial folders are blank white paper as well, while others are showing it perfectly fine. The other strange thing is, is when I take all the files out of the blank folders and move them to another folder, the said blank folder resets itself and the folder icon suddenly works. Now this is for medium and tile view of the icons. It was at first only doing it on the large view, but now it's only those two views.
Any help would be appreciated. My windows is up to date and I've scanned for virius and malware with nothing to show. I've also restarted it as well.
I've attached a screenshot of the folder.

An unusual problem in Windows 8.

I have downloaded a .dot template to print a calendar from MS Outlook. The template works fine by double clicking the icon but the .dot icon on the desktop is a blank square with the name of the template below it.

The original downloaded file in a folder shows the icon with the MS Word picture but as soon as I move it to the desktop the icon goes blank.

I have ensured that the file is associated with MS Word (2003) and the icon shows with the picture in the file associations program.

I have also tried deleting the icon cache and rebooting but all stays the same with a blank icon.

Any suggestions?

Last night I had my computer restart for no particular reason and it went through the windows start up but then when it's supposed to go to the log in screen for me to enter my password all I get is the mouse icon with a black screen. I tried hitting the f4 with the three options of safe mode, safe mode with net working and safe mode with command. When I hit any of these choices it starts loading the drivers and after about 15 drivers are listed it locks up and goes back to the black screen with a larger mouse icon. I also tried hitting f8 and had the same problem. My computer is a dell Inspiron 660 running windows 7. I don't have a windows 7 disc as dell never gave me one. I have been keeping my anti virus up to date- norton but for some reason I must have gotten a virus of some sort as a little before my problem norton blocked one attack but then allowed something in which it deemed safe. I was on a page that I linked from Facebook and didn't think the page was unsafe. I love it that I pay good $ and norton didn't do its job. I have looked at past posts and I am stumped. Also I am not a really savvy tech guy so bear with me if I need some help or ask a lot of questions. Luckily I have a iPad to still post.

I received 4 files from a coworker stating that she couldn't open them, but since she didn't need them and I did, would i deal with the problem. Well, the icons for the files (3 are .jpg -unknown creating program, 1 .doc -created in word) are blank, that is they look like a sheet of white paper and they also have a small black clock (or something that looks verymuch like a clock) in the lower left hand corner of the icon. The files, which should be rather large are showing as only being 2kb (the pics should be 1mb+ each). I would go to the source who created the files, only she left her job a year ago and the coworker who sent the files to me inherited her computer. Both my and my coworker's computers are identical, running windows 2000, with all 200 apps. the word version is 9.0.4527. I have tried saving the files, "open with", and opening them from with in various apps, nothing is working. I figure there is a really simple solution that I have no clue about. Any advice, etc. would be appreciated.

A:FIles are blank, unknown icon

I don't want to get your hopes up making you think that I know the answer. Sadly, I probably know as little (or less) as you do about what the heck is going on with your crazy doc file.

I just have one tiny suggestion that may or may not help.

(Have you tried this already?)
When you right-click the ICON of the document and choose "Properties," what kind of information do you get?? Does the properties window indicate anything about "shortcut" this or "target" that?

Also, compare the Properties window you get for the mystery file to the Properties window you get when you right-click the icon of a KNOWN GOOD DOCUMENT.

I'm hoping this could give us more clues.

I'm also hoping that someone else will have even better advice.

Overall, though, I can't help but feel that the inaccurate file sizes could be a bad sign.

Do you think you could save a screen-shot of the white-sheet-with-black-clock image. Could you save a graphic of that (with Print Scrn or something) and upload it as a attachment here in the forum thread as a bmp or a jpg???

Maybe if someone sees the icon it will jog their memory

I am looking for some help with something that I have been unsuccessful in finding a solution for. I am currently doing testing with windows 7 and adding a few computers to our domain. We do not want the computer to remember the last logged in user, therefore when the computer boots up, it shows a blank user icon. I understand the reasoning behind this but I a looking for a fix. I would like to put a custom user icon in there and have it display when users are not logged in as well as make it the default for the user icons. I have already made it the default for the user icons, however am stuck on the blank icon.

Could someone please point me in the right direction?

Thanks again,

Now I've been having quite a deal of trying to restore a lot of default stuff after having some theme files go wrong. As you could see I've been posting recently about "how to get this back", "why is this blank" stuff like that, I'm sorry. I guess this is what happens when you don't back up your files. I'm learning the hard way and will back up my files next time. :I
Now to my question, every time I download something it's icon shows up as a blank page (picture) and this isn't only for iTunes. I was just using iTunes as an example. But as you can see in the picture provided, there is a blank page for the icon. I don't know why it's doing this, it does this both in Firefox and Chrome, I reinstalled Firefox and it still does it. Here's a catch though, whatever I download has a correct icon for it in my downloads folder or where ever I save my download too. (This only applies if it has it's own icon, like iTunes for it's installation.exe icon). I'm pretty mind boggled about this. I don't know any other reason why it could be doing this. I just did a fresh install of Windows 7 Home Premium (x64) and at the time being, I cannot restore my hard drive as in I need an Acer recovery disc, which I do not have (which I'm sure if I could do this, it would solve my problem).

Thank you for reading this. (:

A:Blank icon everytime I download something?

Hello CosmicPoptart,

The program's icon will be seen on it's .exe file or shortcut instead.

That's the "Open File - Security Warning" prompt, and is common for the icon to be like that in it. You could use the tutorial below to unblock the downloaded file to stop getting this.

Hi all ...

Recently I've been getting a little blank Word icon showing up as processing. Has a blue title top and the window is blank.

It doesn't show up in the Task Bar or Windows Task Manager.

The only way I know it is there is using old school of Alt+Tab to toggle amongst programs, i.e., Outlook, Windows Media (music), Word and Internet. Yes, I obviously highlight it to bring it up but it doesn't come up.

To use the Alt+Tab toggle method there has to be at least two programs open. I've tried all the combinations above. It shows up but I still can't get it to come to the forefront.

I can't afford to buy my Norton virus update so I downloaded Avast and did a "thourough" scan (6 hours). Nothing. Nada. Zip. It still comes back.

I can get rid of it by re-booting. It seems my computer slows down when it shows up. Thus if I can't find it I can't get rid of it.

Class, any thoughts or suggestions????

Have you tried doing a repair install of XP?

Boot to the XP cd. The first set of options does mention Repair using the Recovery Console ... Don't choose this option. Instead, press enter. After you agree to the license, you'll see a second set of options. One should be Repair Existing XP Install. Press R here, then let it run.

Afterwards, if all is well, go to the Security Forum and follow the Hijack This procedures.

You might see if rebuilding the notification area icons may be able to help with this as well.

IE 6 screen will show, and the globe icon spins in the corner, but nothing will load. I can leave it like this for 10 minutes (the longest I have tried) and I do not even get an error message. I use Verizon DSL, and msn works fine. I also loaded Firefox 2.0 and it works just fine. Since it does, I would just ignore the disfuctional IE, except that several programs are internally set to connect through IE and they are locked out by this problem. I am run Windows 2000. Any suggestions would be appreciated if you have run across this issue.

In IE6 with WinXP I find it convenient to include a shortcut to about:blank in my quick start taskbar menu. I've done this for years, and IE has associated a tooltip with this icon that reads "about:blank." I'm able to control the nature of the tooltip associated with such icons by renaming the shortcut. This is not working with the about:blank shortcut, but I can live with a tooltip reading "about:blank." However, I'm now continually annoyed by a preface to the tooltip that gives the URL of a page I recently went to. So the tooltip now reads, "http://formmailto.com/formmailto/formhelp.htm about:blank."

This is very weird. The tooltip does not change, even though I've visited many other pages from the about:blank page. I've deleted the about:blank shortcut and re-created it, only to see the exact same annoying tooltip. I've also run the System File Checker, to no avail.

I don't need any tooltips for these shortcuts, and, if I have to have them, I certainly don't want a tooltip pointing to an irrelevant page. What can I do?

Hello ashutosh,

It may be a glitch with yours, I see the list of opened windows when I have mine set this way. You might see if logging off and on, or restarting the computer may clear the problem.

At one point all the icons were working and displaying properly but it has been quite a while now since the icon boxes bacame blank. I am able to use some editing options and all the emoticons (but can't see any of them, except for the text description when I scroll ove the icons). Is there any connection between these and Microsoft Office? Mine is not installed proprerly but I never thought about a possible connection before. ANY help that sheds some light will be a wonderful Christmas treat. Thank you in advance.
