Q: Thinkpad Yoga 460 Keyboard stopped working

Hi, I just bought a ThinkPad Yoga 460 and I have a strange problem. The internal keyboard does not work any more across operating systems, so this isn't software specific. However, the keyboard *does* work in the beginning a cold start until the operating system boots - I can enter the BIOS settings, navigate around there, I can enter the onboard diagnostics utility, everything works fine - until an operating system boots. If I just reboot without turning the computer off, the internal keyboard doesn't work. I even restored factory settings, so I am writing this from an Ubuntu Live USB with an external keyboard until I have figured out how to restore EFI, but the keyboard still isn't working. The problem occured after a long time of using only the external keyboard, so I can't exactly tell what I was doing when it happened. I'm guessing it has to do with the rotation sensor being stuck, but what would be the point of disabling the keyboard if it's physically impossible to press any buttons in tablet mode... Also, the touch pad keeps working anyway. I removed Windows from the laptop and I don't think there'd be an easy way to get it back, so I hope any solutions would work on Linux too. Hello,I have a Lenovo Thinkpad Yoga 260 laptop, Windows 10 64 bit, and a few months back the pen stopped working. I may have contributed to that. I got the ingenius idea to try to install my Wacom Intuos pen driver to see if it would work. The Lenovo pen stopped working but after I uninstalled the Intuos driver, the pen started working agin. But then Windows 10 updated and the pen started behaving strangely. I tried to disable Windows Ink, manually and via console commands, specifically ?reg add HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Pen /v LegacyPenInteractionModel /t REG_DWORD /d 1 /f?. After I entered this command the pen stopped working completely, and hasn't worked since. I tried entering the counter command ?reg add HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Pen /v LegacyPenInteractionModel /t REG_DWORD /d 0 /f?, I tried updating the pen driver via device manager. I tried updating all my drivers via Lenovo bridge (downloading all sorts of drivers, wintab, firmware updates...)updating my Bios, reinstalling Windows and reverting to factory settings. Today my digitizer stopped working for the first time since I purchased my Thinkpad Yoga several years ago. Touch screen still works as normal. I don't think it's software related because I dual boot Windows and Ubuntu and it doesn't work in either operating system. Before it would work in both operating systems, and I haven't had any updates since it was last working. Is it possible for the digitizer itself to be broken somehow? I haven't dropped the device or spilled any liquid on it. I've read elsewhere on the forum that the digitizer is powered by a capacitor that is charged within the laptop. Is this still true for Thinkpad Yogas? Are there steps I can take to diagnose the issue?

Hello.Maybe someone can help me. I have a Lenovo Thinkpad X1 Yoga with Win 10 running and in the past weeks it all worked fine. I used the Touchscreen and Tablet mode a bit and also used the pen occasionally. Since my flight back from Spain last weekend, the touchscreen stopped working. It does not react to fingers or the pen at all. I do not see an error message in the device manager, but am also not able to identify which device the toughscreen should be - I see no "wacom" device listed there. Wind 10 Hardware problem solver did not find anything. I also let the automated Lenovo driver updater run and it did some updates, but none regarding the touchscreen and it did not change anything. Now I first need to find out if it is a hardware or a software error - how can I do that?

I am not sure if I am in the right forum, but this whole site is so difficult to navigate. There are no suppot numbers, and no-one to call. I am on a different computer now because my keyboard on my X1 Carbon Thinkpad has suddenly stopped working. I can get a keyboard to come up on the screen (and type in using external mouse) but none of the keys on the actual keypad work. None of the keys work. Some of the FN keys work. I have tried Ctrl + Alt + Del.

Hello Everyone! I have scoured the chats and have not seen a resolution for a partially working keyboard. I have a 3-yr old Thinkpad Yoga (20CD00B1US) running windows 10 (Computer was installed with 8.1). The 10 install was done months ago. Yesterday, part of my keys (entire qwerty row, Shift keys, Enter Key, Ctrl keys, and the Tab key just to name a few) decided to stop working. Note that the online keyboard functions fine, hence why I can type this message. I am unable to go to Bios because all the keys needed are not functioning and I do not have access to an external keyboard. This is my only only computer in the home. I have tried the following: 1. Fn+k =lock screen to see if that was enabled. 2.Accessed my accessibily menu to see if the keyboard screen had unneccessary toggles. Nothing is toggled. 3. Downloaded Talent Driver to see if I had outdated drivers. I have 2. Intel HD Graphics Family in 20.19.15.4549; and, Touchpad Synaptics Pointing in 19.3.4.86, although I am not sure how these will help with the keyboard issue. Please note, I can not go into BIOS because the necessary keys are not functionin. With this information, can anyone discern if this is a software or hardware issue. This will let me know if I can fix myself or take it to a certified Lenovo repair place. Thanks from Minnesota!!

I have a problem with my Thinkpad Yoga 460 which started to occur about 2 weeks ago. Sometimes after bootup the keyboard does not work when I have to supply my passphrase for the hard disk encryption. The solution I have in this situation is to turn the battery of in the UEFI setup. Then pressing the power button for 10 seconds and then enabling the battery again with the power cable. This works reliable to fix the issue, but it is very annoying and when I am at the university there is no socket to enable the battery again. Is something broken or is there a workaround for this issue?

I have had this notebook for a few years and it has performed well. Today however I brought it out of hibernation mode, and it beeped. The keyboard and touchpad were not working. I restarted the computer and it beeped as it was loading, giving a message that said "Keyboard not detected." Once windows booted up, same problem. I shut down and restarted, same problem. I then unplugged everything, took the battery out, put it back together, and now it works fine. I'm a little concerned about this. Is this an indication of a possible hardware failure, or could something else more innocuous be causing it? Thanks in advance!

Before I look into doing that, has anyone found any other solution? It seems that the backlit keyboard on my Yoga 900-13ISK stopped working after an update, and it's been a few months now, so I might have to restore back pretty far and would like to avoid it.

This is the third time that it is happening. The keyboard works fine before taking off, then when the airplane goes to a certain height several keys stopped working. After landing it starts to functioning again. Definitely related to air pressure, which is pretty funny and annoying ... I mean, I don't think I am being picky given that every one else on the air plane is playing with their laptops...

I purchased a Yoga 2 13 (SN: CB29722715) laptop from US with IWS. Some time back various keys on the laptop stopped working, including Ctrl, 1, 3, 5, and others, making it useless unless you also carry another laptop around. I took it to the repair center in Allahabad, India, but the service center returned it saying that the parts are not available in India. Surely there must be a way to obtain these parts? I've tried to contact Lenovo support on chat and phone, but all they can tell me is to take it to the service center. I finally got in touch with a senior tech support person, who informed via email that the parts required were FRU 25215052 and FRU 25215053, but again, I was informed that these parts were not available with Lenovo (anywhere??) and have not heard anything further since (this was two days ago). Is the IWS completely useless in this case? Is there anything I can do apart from junking the laptop?

Hello Community,Please help me with this issue that frustrates me. I try to? ?re-install Linux (Manjaro) on my Lenovo X1? ?Yoga? (?1? ?Gen?) ?as dual boot? (?Win10?) ?after SSD replacement.I can boot UEFI? ?from a USB flash drive.? ?Linux life USB ?boots without issues only that after boot has finished the notebook keyboard and touch pad does not work.? ?The touch screen is working.Linux and Win10 were working without issues prior to the HW change (SSD card, followed by motherboard, screen and keyboard).Win10 works and Linux at Grub level works, however after boot the keyboard and touchpad does not. What I did:Started Windows10 , rebooted need to press F12 to get to boot order, selected USB HDD, booted.Same result. Can use the keyboard in selecting of e.g. driver free or nonfree; and then start the boot process. After boot, only touch screen works, keyboard and touchpad are not working (that is the same for current and earlier Kernel Linux versions ( tested Manjaro (Arch), Mint (Debian), Puppy (Ubuntu), Solus). What could I do next to troubleshoot this issue which must be software related. Thank you for your interest in helping me. Kla

Hello I own a thinkpad S1 yoga laptop (core i3 processor and 4 GB RAM). It suddenly stopped charging using 45W adapter (20V, 2.5 A). However, it is charging fine using a 90W adapter (20V, 4.5 A) which I got with my previous Lenovo laptop Any recent windows or system updates caused this? Is there any solution other than using a 90W adapter which I am scared to use as it may charge 47W battery too rapidly casuing a quick death of battery or explosion in the worst case. Please help

I believe the AC Adapter has gone bad as you have mentioned that its charging fine with 90W Adapter 
I don't think so it is caused due to software or Windows updates. You can also check whether its getting charged in shutdown mode or not to confirm.

I have just bought this laptop a week before.  I've had this message saying "display driver stopped responding and has recovered" and the screen started working abnormal. I have been looking for and tried many solutions (from Lenovo Forum, Microsoft Support Site, Youtube) as listed below: 1. uninstall and update the drive from Intel. 2. Uninstall and update the drive from Lenovo Support Site3. Set TdrDelay to value 8 / 10  However, all methods failed.  Plus, a message " Application has been blocked from accessing Graphics hardware" sometimes, and my application froze for 11-2 seconds.  Could you please suggest a method to solve this critical issue?  My  GPU is Intel HD Graphics 520, and current driver version is 20.19.15.4404

The fingerprint scan function stopped working yesterday for my computer. I googled for a solution and I found one I tried to follow it. One of the steps was to update the bios and I did and it worked for one hour or so and then stopped working again. I couldn't do the other steps at all since I don't have anything software called Lenovo fingerprint manager pro on my computer and I can't find it anywhere online for Windows 10 either. Hi community, please your support Today I start my laptop and a BIOS message appears warning to update the date and time, I accessed to the setup and the date and time was changed to 01/01/2001 and time 00:00:00, I updated to today July 21t, 2018 8:12pm. I saved the configuration and boot continues.  Apparently the problem was solved and Windows 10 started. Now I have the following problem: It is not possible to use the keyboard in a regular basis, 2 letters by second, I have to wait 2 seconds to enter a letter, if I enter the letters a litle faster some of them are missed and the words and phrases are incomplete. Please need your feedback, I can not use the keyboard as I used to, as a reference, to write this message took me almost 30min,very frustrating Many thanks in advance for your comments and solution proposals Jose CollantesMexico

Hello, I have a ThinkPad Yoga S1. The keyboard sometimes becomes unresponsive, while the external keyboard still works fine. The keyboard revives after going to sleep mode. I have had this issue since the beginning (2 month ago). The fact that it still works fine with the external keyboard incriminates the driver. But all drivers are up to date. (I made all the updates I could find.) And in the device manager, the status reads « This device is working properly ». Anyone else having the same issue, ... and its solution? Thanks,JC

As per the query we understood that you are facing issue with keyboard not working when system is on sleep mode on your ThinkPad Yoga S1.
 
Go to device manager and under keyboard adapter uninstall all the adapter and restart the system and check.
 
Run ThinkVantage system update utility and update all the drivers and application from that.

I have a Thinkpad Yoga 12 model. It is using Windows 10. What is the driver/software I should check to make sure I'm running the latest version for the equivalent of what used to be called "Transitions"?  Basically something that recognizes various keyboard configurations such as tablet mode, tent mode, etc. and appropriately disables or re-enables the keyboard? Two things happened last night as I was playing a game in tent mode:- firstly I could not get the screen to rotate 180 degrees when I switched from tablet mode to normal laptop mode by rotating the keyboard and flipping to normal orientation.  So everything was displayed upside-down.- the keyboard was unresponsive, but I could use the touch screen fine and use the Windows button under the screen to get to the Start menu.   So basically somehow something stopped responsing that should have told the system that I flipped the laptop from tent mode to normal mode and also rotated the keyboard forward.

My keyboard on my Tinkpad Yoga 260 is deteriorating - key by key, stops working - I have to to hit them extremely hard to get it to work - more and more keys work like this. I've tried to call support over and over again and before I reach a person the menu system hangs up - over and over again. I'm desperate and fedup. Its only one year + old. Yes I use it a lot and I've only had thinkpads since 2003. This is the worst Thinkpad product I've had - that is - all the others have been great. I believe the whole keyboard must be exchanged, after only one year - key by key stops working!!! And I cannot get hold of support. Please anybody out there with some good advice. Hey everyone, Recently bought this laptop. Loving everything about it. However, I did a fresh install of Windows 10 (it wasn't an upgrade from Win8.1, but rather a new install of Win10 after I replaced the harddrive to a 1TB SSD). Since then I've reinstalled everything I could get from the site. Every Lenovo driver set and utility. Updated the BIOS. Consulted the Solution Center. Ran scans from the utilities and the site. I've literally tried EVERYTHING that's obvious, and I can't get the backlight to come on at all. When I first received the laptop with the old harddrive, the backlight worked just fine. Since I put in the new SSD with a fresh install, I cannot for the life of me get it to turn on. Pressing Fn+SPACE gets it to show the little icon on screen that it's SUPPOSED to be turned on, but it isn't on. So I'm at a loss here. I sincerely doubt it's a hardware issue, because literally the only thing that's changed is the harddrive. If there's a specific driver for the keyboard backlight, I'd love to know about it. Thanks in advance!

Do you want to try out something just to check that the keyboard light is working?
I have a TP Yoga 14 here and when I access the BIOS the keyboard lights up when I press "FN+Space", give it a try if it works for you.
 
I do not know if it requires an special driver, but I'm using the Windows 10 that was updated over the Win8.1 that came included.
 
The other things that cames to my mind is trying to boot other OS from the USB and see if the keyboard lights up.

After latest update, my Thinkpad Yoga 12 keyboard won´t light up on Fn + space. It does light up on startup. I have installed the latest Thinkpad Hotkey Features Integration drivers. Is this reason for me to revert to win 8.1, or is there a solution? I cannot find the older 8.78.00 Hotkey driver anywhere. Would that work better?

I'm not sure what can be the issue, but can you try checking the "Lenovo Settings" application to check if your keyboard backlight turns on?
?
The Lenovo Settings is on the Windows Store , but you also need to install the Dependecy Package.
 
But just checking the support site I found there is a BIOS update that says:
(1.08)
- (Fix) Fixed an issue that "Fn + Space" cannot control KB backlight after exit shipping mode.
 
Please double check if this is your model support site. Maybe you should apply that BIOS update too.

Writing from my PC, as of over a month ago my brand new ThinkPad had the latest windows update and turned into a worthless unproductive screen and touchpad system. I have waited on updates and since then the BIOS, some hotkeys and other keyboard related drivers have been updated. All related drivers have been re-installed all up-to-date etc. Though currently the following things occur when typing, when pressing:"backspace key" once= replace last key with a y"backspace key" hold= replace last key with a y and keep placing y's"n" key= adds a space before every n typed so it would look like le novo"y" key once= nothing happens"y" key hold= places y's"j" key= types out "<j"Spamming letters: random fn keys are activated, eg sound brightness etc."=" key= the "°" degree symbol"-" key= "/" And many more examples like this, basically have no clue what to do; I've called Lenovo and the store I bought it from; both replied that I had to wait for updates though I am not really counting on that being a solution anytime soon so I would hugely appreciate your time in providing a solve for my problem! Thanks for your time, Andreas

HiI am used to T420, 450 laptops, and looking for Yoga with similar easy type keyboard (good key travel, less actuation force) and easy on eyes screen anti-glare/matte.  Seems like they don't make matte displays now. How does the  keyboard and display ona) X1 yogab) thinkpad yoga 460 compare with T420/T450 laptops? 2) How does a anti-glare screen protector compare with display already built with anti-glare? 3) How does the older matte displays compare with the new anti-glare IPS/LED backlights  Thanks

Anyone got an issue with the keyboard? Sometimes when I type using the keyboard, it make a sound, coming from the speaker. I have no idea what happen. The keyboard function as normal, apart from making random noise through the speaker somehow. And it happens for the alphabet buttons only. I tried to pinpoint what makes the noise and if certain buttons trigger it, but so far, looks like it is random and any button can trigger it.

Finally got a fix for the problem. I should have googled the issue some more before posting it here. For anyone having this problem, or curious about the fix, here is the link that solved my problem. Apparently, it is a "feature" of most thinkpad model since years ago.Keyboard beeping issue solved

Hello Everyone, I am using my thinkpad X1 Yoga Gen 2 for more than 3 months. While working today, suddenly one of the key (G) was popout from the keyboard. In general key (G) skin is hanging out from keyboard. When I fold my laptop then this key G struck and unfunctional. I have to keep press it when fold or unfold my laptop. My laptop is still under warranty and lenovo service chat is not working. It is blinking for a long time but there is no response. Any Help Lenovo service.Thank you

As the title says, my trackpoint, keyboard backlight and touchpad have stopped working. The problem happened a few weeks after I updated from windows 8.1 to windows 10. I have tried updating ultranav drivers, resetting windows 10 (which was a bit of a pain given that I will now have to reinstall all my software) and then reverting to windows 8.1 after none of the above worked. Fortunately my touchscreen and mouse support is still ok, but I can't work in low light conditions without my keyboard light. Can anyone help? I see that some Yoga 12 users report similar problems after a fuse fails. Does anyone know if this occurs on the S1 Yoga?

Simultaniously my keyboard backlight, touchpoint and trackpad stopped working. They do not appear in device manager and reinstalling drivers did nothing. On Lenovos advice, I purchased replacement palmrest, trackpad, keyboard etc and fitted them successfully but this has made no difference. Could it be a power management issue? I've updated PM drivers. Motherboard damage? As far as I know no water or physical damage has occurred.

When I first bought this product, two LEDs of Sound Mute and MIC disable work correctly.But after setting up the computer, it does not turn on any more (even though MUTE is okay).Moreover, 'on screen display' of these keys do not appear any more...Can anyone help me?

I?m sorry to hear that on screen display and mic disable LED in your Lenovo ThinkPad Yoga is not working properly.
 
Try reinstalling the hotkey integration features and Power management driver.

I have a Yoga Thinkpad 14 which was purchased on Jan 6 2016 from Lenovo. So the thinkpad is still under warranty. Lately, I have been experiencing random shutdowns and keyboard lockups. I am just browsing as normal. This used to be fine but not is problematic. I'm receiving 3-4 shutdowns a day. The battery is fully powered and it doesn't matter if the power cord is attached or not. It's not a sleep issue or lid closing issue. It just happens to lockup or shutdown and I don't know when it will do it. I ran the LSC diagnostics and everything was fine. No error codes. I think this might be a hardware issue as no new software or hardware has been loaded and it's been ok for 6 months until now. I can submit a service request but before I do that, are there any suggestions ?

Hi all I have 2016 thinkpad yoga 12 still under warrenty, I barely used it. Suddenly, the trackpad stopped working. Its even not recognized by the windows 10. Also, I noticed that the keyboard back light is not working and the cpu fan is not blowing at all anymore. I tried a linux usb boot stick to make sure that it is a HW problem. Still not qorking under linux too ( obviously a HW probelm). I like this device alot but I think it wont be able to perform in summer because of the fan issue. Currently, I am out of country and I have no access to lenovo support. Can any one help me please?

Don't have the issues with the trackpad, but my fan too does not start at all.Everything updated, the freshest BIOS 1.30. Lenovo support unhelpful.
