Possible hardware problem?

Q: Possible hardware problem?

so recently my computer crashed and didn't turn on, so i changed the psu,
next thing i know i have a problem with my explorer which was unresolved so i decide to reformat, well i haven't yet but~

im sending data to another computer so i can send it back after i reformat....then all of a sudden the screen turns black. The computer is still on but the music i have shuts off and my keys are unresponsive, such as if i press caps lock, the light on the keyboard for caps lock will not go on

this happens at random times after i boot the computer, 5-20 minutes after the boot up...i'm convinced it's a hardware related issue

i don't think it's my psu, it's brand new...the one i had beforehand was only 2 months old anyway and i'm thinking it burned out cause what happened with the previous psu was at any time, the computer would restart or shut down, if it shut down i would have to wait 5-10 minutes to reboot it because if i tried to boot it too soon, the machine would turn on but nothing would come up
this applies to now too, when the screen turns black i have to hold the power button, then wait 5-10 minutes before starting back up again...
if it was my video card, i would still be able to do things with my keyboard, just not see it right? but the whole computer is unresponsive.......help? OH oh and my system is clean of any viruses or whatever, i just need to fix it to get enough time to send the rest of my data to the other computer so i can reformat, there's a problem with my explorer which i won't get into.

Preferred Solution: Possible hardware problem?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi guys,

About two months ago I bought an Acer TimelineX laptop (the 11.6" version with the i7 core.) Last night it started havong some vicious problems. It will instantly shut down or freeze with the current displayed graphics being very distorted, seemingly at random intervals. I suspect a hardware problem because a few minutes before all this started I noticed the cover protecting the internal components was out of place, so I snapped it back into position.

I tried running some of the pre-boot Windows diagnostics, but they came up clean. The system crashed once during this process and gave me a blue screen of death that said "PFN_LIST_CORRUPT". I ran a diagnostic on the memory and it came up clean as well. I'm thinking I might have broken some critically important piece of hardware. Anybody have any ideas? Thanks!

-Kai

A:Problem with Acer TimelineX turning off/freezing, suspect a hardware problem

A few silly ideas that i've tried with my Acer ..
try taking the battery out !..
just run it off the lead..
I've been told its something to do with a hardware issue with the standby mode of the fan or the CPU or some standby/neutral position that some gizmo inside does (have you guessed that I'm no techie ;o)
Try it out, it could be a simple (if not permanent) fix.
Good luck

Good afternoon Tech Immortals,

I am working on a friend's computer.
The hardware setup is the following:

AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 5000+ 2.1GHz

2.5 GB RAM CRUCIAL (Memtest says the following about it: DDR2(64 bit)
373MHz DDR746 CAS: 5-5-15

Nvidia GeForce 9800 GT pci-e

MSI K9N6PGM2-V motherboard

The problems:

Problem1. When the computer is turned on it gives out 2 short beeps (memory error, I presume according to an Internet search). Then it loads GRUMP for Ubuntu 9 or Win XP pro
Problem2. Anything that is graphics intensive makes the computer crash or graphics get glitchy. For example videogames will either make windows crash or crash the game and exit to windows. On Ubuntu while running Compiz the OS freezes. It only crashes or glitches with graphic intensive software.

Solution tried:
For problem1. While loading GRUMP there is an option for memtest. Diagnostics came out fine, no errors.

More background information:
I've inspected the motherboard, the graphics card, ram, everything (looking at it physically for any burns or liquid spills etc)
Everything is roughly 4 months old, bought brand new when purchased.
In the past the user had the same setup except that his old graphics card (GeForce BFG TECH 8800 GT) died on him (will get further details about that in about an hour).
Replaced for graphics card mentioned above. Those problems are occurring.
The card gets warm, but not to an alarming point (I want to say around 60 degrees celcius).... Read more

Hi, I'm in need of figuring out if my laptop was infected by a trojan, the operating system went kapoot and i need to reinstall it, or if its hardware failure. I used it last night and my AVG caught a "small trojan horse" called cryptbase.dll and after removing it i believe is where it began. My computer restarted and ended up starting up with the acer splash with me able to click f2 for setup. But f8 doesn't work and causes a long beeping noise if i leave it alone it goes to a black screen with a underscore blinking at the top left. i've done some research but, im unsure which route to take without taking some advice for my own laptop. My laptop is a Acer Aspire 5741-3541, Windows 7,intel core i5-450 processor, 4 GB DDR memory, 500 GB HDD. if you need more information please ask because im unsure with what is needed to fix the problem. The solutions i've heard is reinstalling windows 7, or it might be a HDD problem. Thank you.

Hi, I'm new here (meaning I just made an account but have been lurking around every time I had computer trouble. This time however, I couldn't find anything that resembles the trouble I'm currently experiencing) and I'm hoping if anyone can help me or tell me if I should just throw my laptop against the wall.

I've had my printer (details and TSG SysInfo below) for over a year now, and never had any trouble with it. A few days ago, I needed to print something but wasn't able to (I can't remember what the error said, it didn't happen again) so I uninstalled the printer and re-installed it by downloading the drivers from the HP website. Pop-up balloon said that it wasn't successfully installed and when I would try to install the driver by going to print management and click on Printers I would get: "An error has occurred on the script of this page. Line: 40. Char: 21. Error: Object doesn't support property or method 'SetPrinterName'. Code: 0. URL: res://C:\Windows\system32\pmcsnap.dll/81". So I clicked on Drivers instead and tried to install the driver there and it said: windows found driver software for your device but encountered an error.

Do understand that I have no idea what I'm doing whenever my computer doesn't behave as it is supposed to, and everything is done by trial and error; mostly error. For some reason I felt the need to do a chkdsk /f /r which was scheduled on the next restart, b... Read more

Yesterday, I came home from work to see that my computer had done a reset on its own. When I turned it on, I found the Win 10 Anniversary update waiting for me. Since then, I have had several crashes with games, and even blue screens.

The BSOD's go by so fast, that I had to turn off the automatic restart just to read the error as STOP CODE: MEMORY MANAGEMENT. Apparently, this means that there is a problem pertaining with my RAM.

A few months ago, I came on here with a similar problem after my PSU blew and I had to get anothr one. I solved that by buying 2 new RAM cards to replace the ones inside. I ran a memory diagnostic which showed no problems, and right now I'm running a system file check scanner as well. If both of these come back fine and there are still problems, I may have to get new RAM sticks.

I have a 2 year warranty on them, so replacing them again would be no problem. However, before I do that, I was wondering if the problem might be my motherboard or CPU as they are the only components still used from the computer from when the Power Supply blew? These would be my 3rd set of damaged RAM cards in a year, and that just strikes me as weird, especially since they are designed to withstand overclocking conditions.

A:Unknown hardware problem (possible software problem)

As the computer shut dow/reset for some unknown reason, I'd suspect that unknown event to be related.

Could be power related (ie: power surge or dirty power), power supply (if you are using a non-Tier one model, or possibly the motherboard.

Bottom line, some event occurred which caused this issue and it likely isn't related to previous issues.

I've got serious problem with my Radeon 9600PRO:

I installed Win XP SP2 on my new PC, Windows detected a new VGA device, it tried to install default drivers but it couldnt find it, (although WinXP CD was in a drive, and internet connection was working)

I installed DirectX9 and then launched the latest Catalyst Setup downloaded from ati.com, and installed drivers. After that, my card was noticeable as HIS Radeon 9600 series properly for Device Manager.
However, it didn't work well - in CCC there is 3d a graphic test - with 3d preview - a car driving on the road - and on my display it wasn't looking good, image was blurred or sth, also the icq icons were blurred (flowers and smiles) - while after uninstalling ATI drivers, when card is seen as a default VGA device (default frequency of monitor, default resolution) icq icons are looking well...

With Catalyst Control Centre installed, after reboting my display goes blank, and the only solution is reboting in safe mode, unistalling ATI drivers, and installing them once again, then it works but until the next rebot in normal mode...

Anyone knows what' the problem is? Rahter software or hardware?
Mayby Radeon 9600Pro cann't work properly with Athlon 64?
Maybe I should change something in BIOS?

Hi all, I was hoping someone could help me out. I've been having a reoccurring issue with my laptop. The basic issue is that it runs very, very slow - using about 80%-100% of the CPU when a program is open and 30%-50% of the CPU when no programs are open. If I try to restart the computer, it will hang on a black screen between the "Starting Windows" screen and the "Welcome" screen.

The first few times it occurred (July, October, and mid-November) a System Restore from Safe Mode solved the issue. The fourth and fifth times it happened (late November and early December) I had to try restoring to multiple different restore points before it would work again. The sixth time (mid-December) no amount of System Restores did anything. I ended up running the "sfc scannow" command and that seemed to solve it. The seventh time (late December) neither System Restore nor "sfc scannow" did anything. I ended up reformatting and doing a clean install of Windows. That solved the problem for about a week, then last night it started happening again.

I'm a little lost at this point. I've run tests on both the memory and hard drive and they came out fine. I looked through the event logs each time the issue occurred and didn't see anything that seemed likely to cause this. The fact that it keeps reoccurring, even after a clean install, makes me think it's some kind of hardware issue. But the fact that the computer works completely fine... Read more

The short version of my problem is that at some point after a reboot, certain web pages fail to load.  I'm not sure what the root cause is, at all.  I am running Windows 7 SP1 and was up to date with updates when this started.

When it started happening:
Thursday night, the power flickered at my apartment and made my computer reboot.  I figured it was a good a time as any to install Windows updates since I hadn't done that in a while.  After doing so was when I first noticed the problem.

The problem:
What happens is after I reboot, at first, everything works fine.  At some time after, some web sites just don't load.  The sites that don't load are consistent (if I reboot and wait, all the same ones fail).  A couple examples are bleepingcomputer.com itself and any of Valve's (the game developer) sites.  It doesn't seem that computer help/anti-malware sites are all not working, since MBAM and AVG's sites work.  Google itself always works and when Googling for info on this problem, I seem to find more sites that don't work than do, once it starts happening.

I don't know specifically at what point stuff stops loading.  I tried rebooting then going to read a book for an hour, and it was working when I tried immediately after.  If I reboot and open Firefox with a ton of tabs and start browsing around, it might stop within a few minutes.

What I tried:
At first I thought it was my Internet connection or ... Read more

I use a 60GB HDD Video Jukebox mpm-202, what I use to backup. before formatting and re-installing this pc I put my files on this device, to put them back later, now, I also used this device with the Mac OS 10.2.8, and this should be no problem, because this device, and driver work on both mac and windows. but now, in every directory on my device in which I have put a file in, there appears a unknown file called: .DS_Store .And now, when I connect the device to my re-installed pc, the pc doesn't recognize this device, after I have installed the correct driver.
What do I do to fix this? is it an XP problem, or a hardware problem?

I also had the same problem while running XP.
When i play COD4 a couple of problems started occuring... the keyboard switched off and on while running the game and then at some point just off, the only way i could get it back working was to either log off and back on again or restart. Playing Rugby 2008 nothing happens and everything is fine. Playing Modern Warfare 2 the pc stops responding completely and needs to restart.
I also need to add that my keyboard is a usb one. But it never gave me problems EVER.

Can the Page Faults per second be the cause?
While playing COD 4 the maximum Faults per second is over 12000 and averages around 600. While it is idleing it averages around 30 - 40.
The other things i monitored are:
Disk qeue length : 1.2 max, 0.07 average
CPU interrupts per sec: 1572 max, 619 average
%interrupt time (CPU) : 1.6 max, 0.349 average

While playing Rugby 2008 all the stats are less... Page faults down to 9000
The only significant change was the disk qeue length which is now max 0.069 and average 0.005.

I have updated everything as far as possible (drivers, software... everything). Still the problem continues.

And i was away for 1 month and after returning home this is what i returned to... Definately not a happy chappy

I open it with a paper clip and the tray is loose and free moving. A couple of times I have seen the small drive belt and it is broken. I have gone through 2 (20X Liteon) drives in the last 60 days with very limited usage. I am the only user of the computer and extremely careful so I know the tray is not being beat up and abused. Okay, so I was just browsing through the web when this black windows box kept popping up nonstop. I got really annoyed and decided to restart my computer, but when it restarted, I noticed it didn't restart properly because I saw this popup called Windows Recovery saying that my hardware has a lot of problems and that most cannot be fixed. Then my icons and programs started to disappear from my computer and alerts popping up saying something about my computer cannot scan or detect a hardware. On my desktop, all my icons are gone as if nothing existed on my computer. All my programs and everything essential to maintain my computer just disappear. Is this a bad virus or did my hardware just crashed? Really in need of help. I don't want to pay a lot to get it fix unless I really have to.

one quick way to find out is if you get the bsod dump file and upload it to us. the file is located in c:\windows\minidump. its called *.dmp. if it isnt in minidump you can search for *.dmp. once you find it zip it and upload it to us by using the attachment icon (shaped like a peperclip) in you reply

If you need help with this just let us know

Hi everyone. My problem is that I having a problem with device and printer settings in Windows 7. In the device and printer folder I am getting an error message stating that the Officejet 4500 needs a driver. I have installed and reinstalled the driver several times yet I still recieve the error. In the device manager I have exclamation signs saying the drivers need to be install. I have printed and uploaded a picture, so that is just wrong. My question is how do remove the error message from the device and printer folder and the exclamation points from device manager? I have uploaded a picture of what I am trying to solve. I am using Windows 7 X64 and I have it installed as a network printer.
Any assistance will be appreciated. deanie44

If the Officejet is a multifunction printer then it could be missing one of the drivers for one of the other functions: scanner?

Hi

I noticed burning smell from my PC and then the PSU blow up and a spark was noticed. I changed the PSU unit with a similar model. I was able to start windows XP but after a while, the electrical supply to the PC cuts out on its own. I noticed a flashing light continues to flash on the start button and it only stops when I physically remove the electrical supply lead from the PC. Any idea what has happened?

Thanks and best regards

Is this normal for Windows 7?

I recently purchased a new laptop (Dell Studio XPX16) which came pre-installed with Windows 7(64 bit). On my old laptop I used Vista (32bit) without any major issues.

I duly used Dell Data safe to make a backup of my system before doing anything else. A couple of days later the computer got stuck on 'preparing desktop' and being a patient kind of guy I figured it would eventually load so went to bed leaving it to 'sort itself out'.

However, next day it was still 'preparing desktop'. I had no option than to pull the plug and re-boot. However, now the system would not load at all, and I used my recovery disk to boot up the system and 'recover'. All went well and the first disk loaded up the files and after a while asked for disk 2. I inserted disk 2 and then nothing happened. Again, I thought ok, I'll leave it overnight, but again, still stuck next morning. I tried this 2 more times with the same result (freezing on disk 2). I had no option but to unplug to reset, and after that got a message about missing boot sector or something like that. The machine effectively then wouldnt load anything at all.

Reluctantly (bypassing Dell's ponderous and second rate telephone 'support'), I used a wipe drive disk to remove everything from the drive and re-install Windows 7 from the O/S disk. This was successful and I duly installed all the drivers from the Dell disks provided. All appeared fine and I put all my stuff back on. The following day, windows7... Read more

A:Is this a hardware or O/S problem

Hi bangiepangie and welcome to the forums

It sounds a lot like a disk problem. the first time you apparently had a corrupted boot sector, which should have been resolved when you wiped it clean and reinstalled. Installing from the Dell disk is not quite a clean installation since I believe it will push in a lot of bloatware as well, but the continuing problems point to a hardware malfunction (hard drive or even memory)

I would contact the vendor and try to get a replacement. It seems to me this machine will be a headache if you stick to it.

Desktop pc slowly runs only 1 program, slowly, at a time since a lightning storm. Is there a way to figure out exactly what it damaged so that I may be able to fix it? Maybe like some sort of scan (that would take all day) or something. I found a website called www.testmyhardware.com but I'm not sure if I should run it or not. Any and all help would be appreciated.

I tried to search several times on the forum and each time it says it cannot display the page, so I just had to post the problem. Sorry for any inconvience.

hi before doing that try running sfc /scnw http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/66978-system-files-sfc-command.html
and chkdsk http://maximumpcguides.com/windows-vista/how-to-use-check-disk-in-windows-vista/ they will check for system errors and hdd errors

Hi...I am new to forums so I am not sure if I am in the right place for my question but here goes...just bought a new laptop charger on ebay for my Dell Inspiron 1720...it's a generic 90 watt charger and its triggering a black error message saying: "the ac power adaptor wattage & type cannot be determined". How do I set my machine to recognize the new charger? Thanks in advance.

A:Hardware Problem.

You should go with the manufacturer's (Dell's) charger rather than a generic. This one might not be compatible. You might also try contacting the generic charger's manufacturer.

Hello, my 7 laptop has suddenly begun to misbehave.it sticks on the black toshiba screen when I switch on, it says F2 for something and f10 for something else, but Enter usually gets it to boot up. But then when it has booted if I go to a text program it gives an endless uncontrollable stream of = signs, same in the search box at bottom left, In qwicken it churns the date endlessly forward. Esc gets it out of this (usually) and it works fine.
Can someone point me to what is the problem? Is it the keyboard or is it a software mangle?
Does it sound fixable or is this my hint to dump the machine?
Thanks

Try this first:

Boot your PC with the "Last Known Good Configuration" option.
This quick little option can be accessed by following these simple steps:

Press and hold down the "F8" button as you boot up your PC and before the Windows logo is displayed. This will bring you to the Advanced Boot Options, wherein a list of options on booting up your Windows 7 system is provided.

Locate the "Last Known Good Configuration" option and select it by pressing the Enter key. Your PC should now start booting Windows. Wait and see if it works.

If that didn't work, try System restore.

You will need an access to another computer to be able to create a bootable USB, or CD.
Please download Hiren's Boot CD
ftp://mirrors.uni-ruse.bg/hirens-bootcd/Hirens.BootCD.15.2.zip
Unzip it
You can burn it with your favorite burning tool to blank CD using an option ISO Burn, or if you have a USB flash drive you can create a bootable USB using Rufus
https://rufus.akeo.ie/downloads/rufus-2.8.exe
Insert USB to malfunctioned computer and try to boot computer via USB, entering MiniWindows XP... Tell me if it recognizes your HDD

Hey everyone - this is sort of a continuation from my thread in the Win2k forums, since the problem is now pointing more towards the hardware side of things.

So, some backstory: A few days ago, let's call this magical day "Tuesday", while playing a game of no specific importance, my computer locked up. I thought, well, this is odd. So, naturally, I rebooted. And quickly, my PC locked up again. This repeated for some time, before I cursed and booted into Linux. No problems there, so I assumed that I was having software issues - hence, the post in the 2k Forum.

Now, it seems that my problems are growing rapidly on that blessed machine. In Linux, my internet connection rarely functions, and when it does, the modem will have to wait through being turned on, hearing a dial tone, and listening to the operator telling me to hang up and try again before dialing. This lead me to suspect that somehow, the Modem - a USR 56.6k Internal Fax modem, forgive me for not recalling the model number specifically at this moment - is faulty. So, I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the driver in Windows. Now, Windows can't find my PCI slot that it's plugged in. And it can't find the driver on the mainboard (PCChips M848A) CD.

So that leads me to think that the MoBo might be the problem.

Another thought that originally came to mind was my power supply - an Enermax 300W ATX EG301P-V could be going a bit shaky. That would, I would think, explain the freezing problem... Read more

I have this machine that i just put a new 56k modem in. It installs just fine, but when the computer tries to dial or communicate with the modem, it brings up a pop-up that says that the modem is in use by another application. I've changed slots, modems, unistalled/reinstalled dial-up networking and the modem itself. What can I do?

Just before i went on holiday (this was 3 weeks ago) one of my 2 (SLI) 6800GT Graphics cards overheated and broke. I removed it switched to 1 graphics card and tried to get onto windows with no avail. I left til when i got back from holiday (Today) turned the computer on, it worked fine, minus the 1 graphics card, i then went to plug my headset (which i had in already and was using i just took it out to listen to music) plugged it back in and the computer crashed. Now i use Auidigy ZS Pro so i was plugging it in round the back. I rebooted the computer it loaded into windows fine except no sounds, and windows media player was saying there was a problem so i rebooted again and now, with the sound card in or out it freezes on the Start windows normally screen.

I am currently using my old HDD which is running fine without the card in, i havent tried it with it in yet as i might have to reboot the other HDD anyway because that is 200 gig and i would much prefer to use that one. If any of you have any ideas of how i can fix this without a reboot then please help.

Joe.

EDIT

When i try to boot from my normal HDD i click start windows normally and a white line goes accross the very bottom very quickly like a loading screen then does nothing.

Hello.
my problem started when I was playing warcraft 3 and all of a sudden it froze. The mouse wouldn't work, alt-f4, ctrl-alt delete didn't work so i rebooted. Right after the windows loading screen the monitor's light when from green (normal) to yellow as if it were sleeping. so I could only get on windows on safe mode and VGA mode. I was reading around the internet and found some solutions such as, system restore, using driver cleaner pro, un/reinstalling drivers now the wierd thing about this problem is everytime I try and install a nvidia driver from the website or from 3dguru it starts at 50% everytime even after i reformatted the computer and installed clean windows. I think the reason it starts at 50% is because when I was reinstalling it the first time it crashed on the same spot it starts everytime I try and install isn't that wierd? when I went to device manager and deleted the display adapter and rebooted it would still be there, but when I go into display properties, settings tab it says display: (default monitor) on, I also deleted the registers from regedit and reinstalled, but no such luck. While I was reinstalling everything else another problem arised. My audio drivers wouldn't install either, it was freeze everytime it got to the point where it says windows is configuring the sound drivers or something, i've tried downloading drivers from the cd and websites. I've been having this problem for almost a week now.. could so... Read more

A:from one problem to another. could it be hardware?

Because reading that is very hard for me, I will attempt to guess what is wrong with your computer. You can't start your computer in regular mode and you can't install your drivers for anything or is it just your sound card?
'Is it that your drivers fail to install and an error message comes up? Or is it your computer freezes?

Also your north bridge fell? Someone more knowlegdable then me will have to explain that one cause I have no idea how your north bridge can fall, unless you mean failed. Which if something is wrong with the north bridge on your motherboard, you have to get a new motherboard/computer.

Since I am new, I am not available to post an image or link here. Please refer to the address above for screenshot of my CPU problem. Thanks in advance.

Does anyone know what's wrong with my CPU for such screen to appear?
I try several ways but I still can't find the solution and what's wrong with this.
I had format the computer for several times, I think the OS is definitely fine and it's hardware problem. I am seeking for help here.

Sometime the CPU work really well..
When I start my CPU, there is 10% I can run the startup smoothly and 90% the screen appears and just stop running.
One more case,if the computer run smoothly, there is possibility that the computer will restart by itself and then bluescreen happened.

Hope for suggestion and solution here.
Thanks a lot for helping ^.^

A:Some problem with hardware

Try tapping the F8 key as soon as you switch on and then select safe mode.

If this fails to go into safe mode try removing one of your memory sticks, if no better swap the stick to another one. If it boots OK with only one stick fitted you have found the problem.

Do you have a graphics card, if so remove the card and clean the contacts with a soft pencil rubber (up and down not from side to side) refit the card and boot up to see if there is any improvement.

If that fails and you also have onboard graphics connect the monitor to that and boot up.

Please give the details of your system, name and model number, and the version of your operating system.
