Screen Freezes and I get a White Transparent Screen

Q: Screen Freezes and I get a White Transparent Screen

Greetings to all,
I have this annoying screen problem that has finally taken its toll on me. While doing anything online (Google, Email, Surfing etc) my computer screen will freeze and then go a white translucent color.
It happens across the board on anything I may be working on.
If I am in Google, and I'm also checking email, or working on an Excel Sheet, all 3 things will freeze and go white.

I have attached my HijackThis Log, as well as the DDS and Attach txt.
Please let me know if there is any other info that is needed to help me solve this annoying problem.

The freeze usually lasts a minute sometimes 2...and as you can imagine, when you're working at a frantic pace, having to stop and start is really annoying.
I have run all my antivirus software (AdAware, AVG, CCleaner) but nothing fixes it.

Hope someone can offer some help.

MissPamela

Preferred Solution: Screen Freezes and I get a White Transparent Screen

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I will try to post an image of the screen so you can get a visual of what I mean

Computer covers whole screen with either white, or white with black, and blue stripes. Multiple times a day.?
This computer was bought in 2005, (HP Media Center PC). Within the second week this freezing(it freezes, and the screen has a white or white with black and blue stipes) occured( yes second week, my brother was uninformed and thought it was normal and didnt return it. It happened often enough as to save anything you were working on every ten to twenty minutes on a bad day. It settled and slowly became less of a problem, then stoped. One day he got a virus and had to restore the computer, the freezing started up again. same as last time, it settled then stoped, a month later, i recieved this computer as a hand me down, as my brother went to college and got a MAC. That was in mid summer of 2008, a week and a half ago, i got a huge virus, i restored my computer, and the freezing started up again, after not doing it once for over a year. It has gotten as bad as freezing every 30 minutes some nights. And earlier today it froze, i turned off and on my computer, went down stairs, and when i came back it was frozen again. I had not even used and program. Please help if you have any idea whats wrong!
Things to keep in mind...
-It only happened after the computer was restored, or bought(ish)
-Its not a normal freeze where you see the programs on the screen still, the screen goes completely white, or white with black and blue stripes.
-4 years old

Thanks!

Then maybe it isn't freezing at all. Maybe there's a problem with your monitor, vga cable, or video card.

Try a different monitor/cable and see if that changes anything. If it doesn't, then try reseating the video card--if any--and if that doesn't work I suggest getting a cheap one from someone's old pc at least to test with.

Installing a new video card can be complicated, but google search for a guide or follow the setup instructions for the video card to the letter and you'll have no problems.

Let us know what's going on, we love to help here... it's like an addiction, but we can stop anytime... really we can.

Welcome to TSF. I know I come off a bit strange, but most of the people here are friendly... and nowhere near as messed up.

Hi i don't know if this is the right place to post this but i need some advice about my computer. Whenever i use my computer after it hasn't been used for a while when i open it it gets a white line across the top of the screen. Then my screen freezes up and my screen goes funny. The only way i can get it to work again is to hook it up to an external monitor. When the screen finally clears up and i unplug the monitor it starts working good again. Do you have any ideas about why my computer would be doing this? Any help would be appreciated.

My computer is a Toshiba Satellite A665 laptop with x86/x64 and is running Windows 7 for operating system. It is my 1st windows 7 computer. The problem began several weeks ago when I was in Facebook playing Castle Age. Thew entire screen turned a milky white and it stayed frozen that way for a minute or so, but came back with no apparent change. Since I wasn't downloading anything, I wondered if I had gotten a Trojan or other virus from Facebook, as I had read about such things recently.
So immediately I began AVG, Ad-aware and Malwarebytes, leaving the computer running until evening. No viruses were found. I wanted to be sure, so I downloaded spy-bot from cnet.com (the only place i will download a program unless it is directly from the manufacturer.
Several days later, I became determined to win a particular battle and found that castle age's "washing machine" animation telling the site was working, could be stopped sometimes, speeding the action, by clicking more often. My computer responded like lightning! I was so pleased at my purchase!
As the days went on though, the white screen popped up more often and the "hold" or "freeze" action would extend a little, until it was like a minute long. I started to tell friends in chat and they said there was a virus that was downloading with "gifts" from the other players.
All of the sudden, I started to receive emails saying I had been sending out links to porn sit... Read more

While using my Gateway laptop it will frequently fade white and freeze. This problem is sporadic at times and constant other times. I cannot figure out a pattern to the problem. I am unclear whether this is a software or harware problem. All I really know is that it is really annoying. I am wondering if anyone out there could help me diagnose this problem. Sometimes, faded white lines appear on the screen and become more intense, depending on the amount of time it is frozen. The problem can last anywhere from a second to almost a minute. When it fades you can still see the the monitor picture kind of, but like I said it is blurred. Someone please help!

A little something before I begin, I have an old Acer laptop, Windows XP and the screen is all ******, so I use a monitor to view the screen.

And this afternoon I was using my laptop and all was fine until there was a short circuit, all the appliances in the house was shut down.

3 hours later when I turned on my laptop the screen started acting up. One particular problem is my cursor, it had black and white stripes, and I never heard this happened before. Next is my screen which freezes very frequently and then it goes black and goes back to normal. This is getting annoying and I have no idea what is wrong. I did a system restore to yesterday's date and to no avail, nothing was changed. Freezing screen, blinking screen and black and white cursor.

Please help? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Hi. And thanks for reading this post.

Description: Windows 7 Starter (netbook) loads , desktop is visible for about 30 seconds, then is taken over by a white screen with a submit box on the right bottom portion of the screen. Other than a one-line warning that says "You have 30 seconds to connect to the internet," there are no other messages or directions. I suspect it is some type of flawed ransomware, with an intelligent, very well-hidden code.

From a USB, using command prompt, I've tried several dozen malware scanners including HitmanPro and MalwareBytes without success.

The computer was infected on 11/18/15 and the virus seems to have deleted any previous restore point(s).

The white screen virus locks up Safe Mode and Safe Mode with Networking. The white screen also launches when trying to use explorer.exe or opening up notepad to save a file to the desktop. Tried to use a new user account to bypass the virus, but the white screen locks up the new user account in the same way.

Safe Mode with Command Prompt works.

I am thankful to be here for some professional help and look forward to the learning experience.

I followed Bleeping Computer's directions and uploaded the relevant logs from a recently run Farbar scan.

Thank you in advance for any assistance you can provide.

1: When the screen shows a dark picture, then when I immediately switch back to a mostly white picture, it's far duller, and gradually (over the course of about 10 seconds), the white screen lightens more and more. I presume this is a battery saving feature. Can I disable it somehow? 2: Fan issues. Although the fan is quiet, I'd rather it be quieter still (or even silent). From previous experience, I know Lenovo tends to (heavily) err on the side of caution, but I'd rather be able to control the fan speeds more directly. Can I somehow half the fan speed or by some other arbitray amount? I'll keep an eye on temperatures, and I know all the risks.

Hi,

The specs of my laptop are: Asus G73J, ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5870, Intel I7, Windows 7 64-bit.

About a month ago I updated my graphics driver. Then, when starting my laptop the screen was white and there was no display. However, if I press the power button and make the laptop go to sleep, and then wake it up, the display starts immediately.
I tried reverting the driver, but I had a problem with flash player which I could not resolve (Even after contacting ATI), and so I decide the white screen problem was less of an issue and updated the drivers again.
This time, the problem is the same as described above. I've also noticed that if I connect my laptop via a hdmi to a TV, the display starts immediately. It's as if the graphics unit is working fine, and so is the screen, but upon startup the graphics doesnt say to the screen 'hey, it's time to start now'! Instead, this message must be sent by either sleeping-waking up the laptop or connecting a hdmi cable.
Does anyone have any ideas? Perhps it's boot-drivers or something I can change in the BIOS menu?

This is what happens when I turn my computer on:

1. blank blue screen with program error message: "explorer.exe has generated errors and will be closed by windows....".
2. if i click "ok" the message goes away and i am left with a blank blue screen and i have to reboot the computer
3. if i don't click ok windows starts to load up an looks normal at first but then another error message pops up (the same one) and the screen turns black and says some junk like "Warning! You're in danger!" and then some junk about spyware.
4. then a few seconds later another error message pops up and the screen turns white and says "Active Desktop Recovery. Microsoft Windows has experienced and unexpected error..." It gives me an option to "click here to restore" but nothing happens when i do click it.
5. and then another error message pops up and the screen goes black again, then another message and it goes white and so on.

I can't really open any programs properly because another error message will pop up and shut down the start menu before i get a chance to open anything.

Yes, you've got a few malware entries in there (a CoolWebSearch hijack, and a couple of trojans), though it's not going to be easy to remedy without seeing the complete HJT log. Can you possibly copy the log to floppy and then post it from the other computer?

What's the Windows OS?
eg. Is it Windows 2000 sp4? Or is it WinXP Pro sp2?

What version of HijackThis is it? v1.99.1 is the latest version.
Is HijackThis.exe running from a permanent folder, and not from within a zip file in a Temp folder?
This is important. Make sure HijackThis.exe is installed in eg.
C:\Program Files\HijackThis

Don't worry about WINNT / winnt and System32 / system32
They are both exactly the same (whether smallcase or uppercase or a mixture).
svchost.exe is legitimate and is an integral part of Windows NT/2k/XP (Services Host).
It is normal to have multiple instances of it running.

I have never seen a screen like this in the 20 years I've had my own computer.

I had Windows 8 on a secondary drive as a dual boot with Windows 7 temporarily as I migrated to Windows 8. I somehow messed up either the boot loader or somehow corrupted the Win8 install for which I'll skip the details for now. But it was just as I was starting to decommission my Win7 install (I removed one drive from the 2-drive mirror running Win7 but figuring the single disk left would still run in a 'degraded' status. It ended up messing something up.).

I've been running bootrec /fixmbr, fixboot, scanos, and rebuildBCD from my Win8 USB stick and it says it completed but no luck on booting. I get either 0xc0000001 or 0xc000021a errors. Auto repair can't fix it.

I tried running this command, "bcdboot c:\windows /s c:", and got the screen shown in the attachment. White vertical lines on an orange background.

The only drives connected is the Win8 SSD sata drive and a DVD drive on IDE. I disconnected the DVD drive and the Win8 flash screen would appear with the circular dots but would freeze right there.

I don't have logs or screenshots to show but the single partition on the SSD is marked as active via diskpart (no system reserve partition), bcdedit shows c:\windows as the default location of the OS, diskpart shows the partition as c:, but the DVD drive is disk0, and the SSD is disk 1. Would that be a problem?

It is like it can't find the winload.exe file but I verified it exists... Read more

Have you tried putting the removed drive back in?

It looks like a video card problem (hardware) to me - but it shouldn't be that because you're able to use the USB Startup Repair functions (am I right in this assumption?). That means (to me) that it's likely to be a video driver problem (?).

Can you attempt to boot into Safe Mode? If so, what happens?
Does the screen problem show up after POST is completed? If so, at what point does it show up?

I have a white screen upon startup. I was able to use my laptop when plugging the VGA cable in the back to an external monitor but that only works with a few tries.
I notice if i put my laptop on sleep for less than 2 hours the external monitor works.
Any time longer and I have to start the process of removing and inserting the plug and playing with my external monitor so it can detect a signal, it usually takes a few tries and a few minutes.
The white screen is always on my laptop throughout the process and even when the external monitor works.
Just determining if i should replace me screen or ribbon video cable or check my connection to my vga cable or could it be my motherboard.

any help or direction is appreciated.

Hi FMIT,
We need to isolate if the issue is with the LCD or the video card. So, turn off the system - press and hold the "d" + power key to turn it back on - this should initiate the LCD built in self test. You should see a screen with solid changing colors and the system would beep. If you see this - the LCD is fine. If you do not see the colors changing - then repeat the step again - but this time - swivel the LCD back and forth and see if there is any display. If the display is intermittent then the LCD cable needs reseating/replacing.
Also, turn off the system and press and hold the "fn" key + power button to turn it back on - wait for a few minutes. If you do not see any display, the system should start beeping. Count the number of beeps per cycle. At any point if you see the screen with solid colors changing - the LCD is fine. The issue is with the video card/motherboard. If do not see the changing colors - then we would suspect the LCD.
Test the system with another VGA cable for the external monitor.
If the system is under warranty, then please send me the service tag of the system and your contact details through a private conversation. Or you could use twitter - @dellcares - we can DM through twitter and help you fix the issue.
Keep us updated.

If I hit "escape", it will exit and go back to the smaller screen just as it normally would. It does this with any online video, Youtube, news videos, what have you, but does not do that when viewing videos offline. I tried the latest FF, it does not have that problem. Update: It also goes white when I try to go full screen while viewing slide shows in Photobucket.

I have an Acer laptop with Windows 7.
This morning I woke it up and everything looked fine, I could see the desktop, my browser etc. I share the machine so I leave him logged into his things on firefox and I log in with IE as much as I hate the browser. I opened IE and got my homepages but the internet was sluggy so I moved the laptop closer to our network. When I sat down I must have hit something (I believe now that I did not) on the keyboard as the computer suddenly shut itself down. I got it back up, got the login screen, typed in my password and got a whitish screen. I could see my cursor, even click on what I believe was the quicktask bar. I got the 'working' cursor as it opened whatever I asked it to. I just couldn't see anything but the cursor. I hit the power button and suddenly I saw the wallpaper and my desktop but only because it needed me to click on the 'close anyway' button cause there was a program preventing the shut down.

I tried a restart in safemode and got the same reaction. No change, accept it (without me near the machine) restarted, so I believe I didn't hit something the first time. If I Ctrl+alt+del, I get the screen that asks me what I want to do but the task manager never shows up when I select it. Do I have a virus? Or is something wrong with his new laptop (bought late 2011 early 2012, I don't remember)

I've got a problem with my laptop, a 2010 HP G60-635DX. First, a little history. This was my wife's laptop until she dropped it and broke the display screen. We hooked it up to a monitor and she was good to go. Last Christmas I got her a new computer and again she was all set. In the meanwhile I've been using this old Dell laptop from 2006 with WinXP in it. Works, but is slow as all get out. A few months ago I decided to use my wife's old computer for myself. It comes with Windows 7 and works quite well. Last June I made the mistake of trying the Windows 10 upgrade, and what a disaster that turned out to be. So I reverted back to Win7, but I lost all the drivers that came with it, so I was stuck. So recently I bought a new screen for my wife's old computer, and I installed it today. So guess what? The screen works fine, but all I get is a blank white screen Nothing at all! It's as if the computer can't display anything at all. I just don't understand it. The computer fires up, but that's it. No start screen, no nothing. Just a blank white screen.
Anybody have any ideas as to what's wrong, and how I could fix this?

A:New laptop screen shows just a blank white screen

I got the computer working! Last night I rechecked the connections to the screen and made sure that they were solid, then all of a sudden the Startup Utility came on, asking me what I wanted to do. So I opted to wipe the HD clean and revert it to the original factory specs (don't worry, I have all important files backed up already). I made sure the connector cable was in there good, then I stuck a piece of electrical tape on it just for safety. Now the computer runs as good as new, and I don't have to spend any money taking it in to a shop.

The moral of the story is this - always check and recheck your connections. Lesson learned!

I didn't really know where to post this. I'm new to this forum and I got a problem with my very old and bad PC.

Specs: (don't laugh)
Motherboard: Leonite-GL8E / ASUS P5LP-LE / leonite 5.00
CPU: Intel Pentium D 915 2.8GHz
RAM: 4GB
GRAPHIC CARD: Idk how to check this without turning the pc as it doesn't load the windows?

Issue:
Whenever I turn my PC white stripes appear on the screen while booting and loading windows then they change to blue. I had Windows 7 Ultimete x64 and a blue screen appeared all the time while loading the system and said something about graphic card. I then done a format to Windows XP as it didn't even let me instal new any Windows 7 system and the XP worked fine but the stripe were still there although only while booting.

There's few pictures how it looks. Please help.

A:White stripes on the screen while booting then blue screen.

Either power supply can't deliver enough power for graphics card or graphics card is dying but this white stripes indicate that it's probably second one.

Well you can check graphics card model by looking at it-you may recognize it;or there is a sticker on the graphics card from which you could read it's model.

I have a brand new HP Pavilion with a touch screen. Out of the box I noticed there was a white speck on the screen which I couldn't wipe off. When I turned the screen on the speck appears to be black. The speck returns to white when the screen is on, but displaying something dark. This seems to me to be strange behavior for a dead pixel, but I don't know anything about the new touch screens.  I found a 'dead pixel test' online, and against red and green backgrounds the speck appeared black, while the test would indicate that it should appear white were it so.  I think that the speck seems to be 'above' the rest of the screen slightly. Does anyone know what this is?

Hi, I've been having this problem. When I start my computer, the whole screen is white for awhile, then it turns black. There is no windows startup logo or my computer brand logo. Then my screen starts flashing and the power button on my monitor blinks and the monitor makes TOK sounds every 2 seconds and then the screen flashes and starts doing that over and over until it decides to make the whole screen white and stay like that. Here's what it looks like:

I tried manually restarting my computer by holding the power button and after a few tries, sometimes, if I'm lucky, it will let me login and then everything is fine.

Today, I went through this process and today I tried turning off the monitor when the screen was white. It restarted and black flashing but made the screen turn white faster. I just kept trying, turning the monitor off and on again because I didn't know what to do. Then I was so lucky, the login page for windows came up and I was able to login; now everything is normal. I can go online and everything without any problems until I shut down my computer and start it up again. Then it's back to square one.

Can anyone help me fix this problem? Should I buy a new monitor? I've had this one for a few years, but my desktop is new; It's one year old in 3 days. (April. 4)

Thanks in advance!

Hi there, I hope everyone is well.

I have a strange issue that started happening recently. System restore doesn't help as it happens with multiple machines.

I have a lobby display running from TV via HDMI to EXTRON to Ethernet and back again to the computer in the server room. I have had this setup for a little over a year now working just fine. We recently got a new computer (We lease) for the lobby display and after setting it up, I only see a black screen with a white cursor. I have troubleshot this a little too much that I am now not sure if it's a windows update, video card update, or possible the EXTRON. However, when hooking up a laptop it works just fine as it should.

Please note that I can see post boot and the CTRL ALT DELETE screen just fine, but once logged in I just see cursor. If someone moves cursor I can see it from the lobby display. If I uninstall the video card driver I see everything perfectly fine but when running presentation it's not focused for obvious reasons, so I can't leave it like that.

I have used a Desktop with AMD and latest drivers as well as down graded drivers, issue still is present. I use an older nvidia card FX570, same deal with drivers, still the issue is present. I use a new computer with a new nvidia card, and it works. but unfortunately we do not have any of those available and that's a really expensive machine.

here is where it gets even more strange;
If I hook the computer up directly to the TV and not behind the extron devi... Read more

Please bare with me. I have a Pavilion laptop. For about a month now when I try to use it, my screen goes black. But when I push the little button that shuts the monitor screen off when you pull the monitor down, the screen goes on again but only for a few seconds. When I leave the laptop on and leave the screen black for a while and then push the button, I usually have the screen for about a minute, after that I have to keep pushing that little button to get the screen to go back on. Please help me and tell me if it is a minor tech issue or worse. Thank you.

Hello,

I am thrilled to find this place as I just completed a transition from an 8 year old box running XP to a new box running win7 pro, and it has been an interesting process to say the least. That old XP box ran 24/7 for 8 years and was only turned off when we would go on vacation a couple of times per year. I recall it crashing only two times in those 8 years, I hope I get the same reliability with 7.

I would like to change the default transparent look of the screens if possible. If I want to see what is behind the current window I'll minimize it, but I'd rather not have that transparent look.

Thanks

A:How do I change the transparent screen look?

That's Aero. To turn it off, right-click the desktop, select Personalize, and then select among the Basic and High Contrast Themes.

A:Transparent screen problem

Simple - you take a digital photo without the PC screen in it, crop it accordingly and set it as wallpaper when you replace the screen.

But - it will only work from one viewing angle and one distance in that case, it is simply a photoshopped illusion.

There is no "software" that will make hardware "disappear"

I have a Dell Inspiron laptop that on Sunday while I was using it mysteriously shut off and then rebooted and when it came back on instead of getting a log in screen to log into windows it just has a black screen with a white cursor. The computer is running Windows Vista. I was on facebook at the time it did this and I also was using my iPhone as a hotspot via usb cable.   I am also having this same issue with my Dell all-in-one desktop computer which is also running Vista. It mysteriously did the same thing on Saturday. It was having other issues prior to the black screen that I was getting help with so when my laptop ended up having the exact same black screen with cursor instead of log in screen I was confused since it wasn't having the other issues the other computer was having prior to it happening to it.  I am getting help for that computer on TechSpot.  Could my iPhone have a virus or something that transferred to my desktop and then my laptop via the usb cable? Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated...Thanks!

I have the same problem. When turning on the laptop screen goes to white, I can hear windows starting but cannot see anything. I connected it to an external monitor, which will only display once windows has loaded. I then took the whole laptop apart and discovered the LCD cable was frayed due to a faulty laptop hinge. I replaced the cable and it was the same, just white. The problem I think is with the motherboard and the intergrated video card. Upon taking the whole thing apart I noticed that where the video card plugs in is right where the heat sink is and the cooling fan which gets exceptional hot. I figure it has fried the board to the extend the monitor will not work where it is plugged in, but the external monitor will work but only when windows boots. So sad to say because of the the heat this laptop puts off and if you have it sitting on your lap or bed or anywhere else that it cannot cool properly it has over heated and you will have to get a new motherboard.

A:Laptop screen starts up white and stays white

"I connected it to an external monitor, which will only display once windows has loaded"... This is normal behavior because the video signal to the external monitor is not sent until Windows loads. If you can see normal video, the motherboard video chip is good

My Hp pavilliin g7 series laptop running windows 7 home starts up with white screen and no beeps or sounds . Started freezing on Hp logo screen last week only sometimes. Id turn off and it would work on second try. About a year and a half ago I used laptop to preview windows 8. And after I reinstalled windows 7 it has been acting funny. Ie freezing and louder fan noise. I did recently update the bios and a pci device driver that never installed. But now it has white screen this morning. I shut off and powered up and still white.
I took off battery and pressed power for 10 sec plugged back in and still white. Still no noise.

I have been reading this board for I while - never posted! Well here is my first.

I work for a pharmaceutical company and was given the mandate to strengthen the security of the systems on the production floor. These computers display the status of various processes. We want this information to remain visible to everyone but now want to control who can actually use the system. When someone does login/unlock the system we need to audit that event.

So far the only way I have found is using a third party app called Transparent Screen Lock ( http://www.e-motional.com/tscreenlock.htm ). This is pretty much a transparent screensaver that you can configure to let users unlock using their own domain account credentials.

I have done some testing with this product ? it seems to work as advertised and has pretty much all the options you would expect. I like the fact that users can use their own domain passwords but worry about that at the same time. My first question is: When evaluating such a product, what are the things I should be looking for? What should I be testing for?

Anyone with any experience in the pharmaceutical industry knows that security is a very big concern so I am pretty apprehensive about implementing such a product. For this reason I would like to open a discussion about my problem (i.e. securing a PC leaving the screen visible) as well as this possible solution. I will open the discussion with a number of questions.

A:Transparent or Clear Screen Lock or Screensaver

You should check for obvious ways of getting around the lock..

Can you specify which users exactly can unlock the computer? (Allowing all domain users to do so is bad).
Does it blcok _all_ key combinations? Ctrl+Alt+Del? Ctrl+Shift+Esc? What if I plug in another USB keyboard or a mouse? What if I reboot the computer?

Also, make sure the system cannot be accessed over the network. If the machine belongs to a domain, then by default it means anyone with Domain Admin privileges can do anything to that computer remotely.
