Modem dongle for a Pretec 33.6 modem card

Q: Modem dongle for a Pretec 33.6 modem card

Hi everyone. I have had a laptop given to me which has a Pretec 33.6 modem card in it. The rub is that it doesn`t have the dongle with it. Let me tell you, I have spent 3 days doing google searches, went to Pretec web site, went to all the sites supposed to have all the dongles, and E-bay, don`t find anything that says Pretec 33.6 modem dongle for sale. Since it is my first encounter with a laptop, and a modem card, that I am off base here, and that the dongle doesn`t have to be a Pretec, but could be another brand, and still work. Any insight, and or help into pointing me in the right direction to a purchase will be appreciated. I like to try to do things by myself, but it sure is nice to know you have backup like this forum when you run into a brick wall. Thanks for your time and any help.

Regards
Mike Peters

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

hallo,
please bear with me am not big techie

friends pc and my laptop both win 7

friend in next village has pc with adsl-2 modem landline connection to internet that is set to connect immediately the pc is switched on. system very very slow. thought i would try my internet dongle (zte from t-mobile) from my laptop on his pc to see if connection is faster. every time i inserted dongle into pc'c usb it asked for zte installation disc. dont have one, dongle installed automatically on my laptop. also, the pc froze solid.

what i did to try eliminate problem.

i switched off the adsl modem so it could not connect to the 'net when pc switched on as i thought the modem and dongle conflicted and pc got its knickers in a twist. pc still asked for installation cd and froze.

i can take my laptop and dongle to see if reception at my friends village is as good as it is in mine but friend skint, wants to keep pc so we need the dongle to work on the pc before we can decide.

thanks for help - please in words of one syllable for a dummie.

Hi,
My laptop shows BSOD, everytime I connect to internet through Tata Photon+ Huawei USB dongle. The dongle works fine in other machines and I have tried installing and uninstalling the drivers several times. I tried checking the dump files and the error was associated with ntoskernel. I cannot install Windows 7 again as I dont have a system restore disk (optical drive issue) and the OS was activated through MAK and so no serial number also.
Would request someone to pin point the issue so that this can be resolved soon. I have attached the dump report and system health report along with this query.
Please let me know in case you need more information.

System Config:
Windows 7 Professional
- x64
- the original installed OS on the system? - Vista/dual boot
- an OEM or full retail version? - MAK
- What is the age of system (hardware)? - bought in March 2009
- What is the age of OS installation (have you re-installed the OS?) - Installed on January 2011/ no reinstallation done

I had a wireless USB broadband modem dongle (with SIM card inside) which was working fine. Recently a friend used my PC and installed his own USB modem (different brand and different ISP) to go online. After that my modem wouldn't connect any more so I figured it was a device conflict. I tried to uninstall / delete both modems software and do a fresh install of my modem but my PC keeps saying my modem is already installed even through I have supposedly uninstalled it. I figure there must be still some traces of the original installation on my PC that is preventing the reinstallation. What can I do to completely wipe off all traces of both modem installations so that I can then do a fresh clean install? I though of reinstalling Windows but that may not wipe the modem software.

However when try to attach to the cradlepoint router it recognizes the modem however it shows it as off line and network miss configured.

Both modem and router have up to date firmware. I have used 3 different ctr500 routers with the same result. And yes it is compatible according to cradlepoint. And yes I have tried to connect another usb device that a friend had and it connected with no problems.

My service provider is melinicom who is a reseller for the sprint network and yes the device is a sprint franklin u300 device

My Motorola SBG901 Modem/Router combo has stopped connecting to the internet. I have done all the troubleshooting with Comcast and with Motorola and it is out of warranty, so I will have to purchase a new one.

In the mean time, I wanted to use it only as a wireless router connected to my Scientific Atlanta DPC2100R2 modem. Is there any way to do this? Is there a way to disable the modem in the SBG901?

Simply connecting with the ethernet cords has not worked. I connected the DPC2100 to the SBG901 via ethernet cord. My computer was able to pick up a wireless connection but there is no cable connection. I am using Windows 7.

Hi,

I'm trying to establish some kind of network between two computers using a direct modem to modem connection. I know there are some other options out there, but my team and I are specifically looking into this kind of implementation due to certain parameters of the project.

Basically, I want to use software like UltraVNC to be able to control a remote computer with my host computer. Neither computer will have access to the internet and are connected via two external modems. Can anyone give me the step by step procedure for this and how it is done?

Thanks,

Jeremy

You want 2 modems as in a 56k to a 56k?

Easiest way I can think of for something similar would be 2 NICs and a crossover cable to direct connect the two PCs.

Hey, I am trying to install a USB WWAN modem on my Vista laptop (2.33 ghz, 2 gb ram) and when i follow the instructions on the software provided, it says to insert the usb modem and let windows recognize it and install it, and go from there.

the problem is, once i put in the usb drive, vista recognizes that there is a new device in, but once it tries to install it, it won't recognize any drivers on the disc thats inserted, and doesn't find anything on the rest of the computer.

the modem has been successfully installed on two XP machines, and one mac, so i know that its possible to do, but its not letting me do it on my laptop...

Any help would be appreciated, thanks

I would say check the mfg website and see if you cant find some updated drivers for it or even check google and see if anyone has "hacked" the XP drivers into working with Vista. I know that Vista's been having lots of issues with past and current third party products and so it could just be that your modem is incompatible with Vista or you just need to look a bit more for newer drivers.

I don't know the model or the type. The stuff I put in when installing it in the control panel(it was already physically installed in the computer, but wasn't dialing) is a bunch of guesses.

This is all the info I have about a modem that refuses to work right:

"Port: COM1" - I set it up that way when intalling through the control panel and I have no idea if that's how it should be set up.
"Interrupt: 4
Address: 3F8
UART: NS 16550AN
Standard 56000 bps V90 Modem" - Again, I set the bold part up when installing via the control panel and have no idea if that's set up right.

"Identifier: USRK2_Gen"

I googled the identifier and found that it was a USRobotics modem, but that's all I know about it.

However when I power down unplug the old usb modem and plug in the new ethernet modem/router nothing happens. Am I being completely stupid here? Can I not use the new modem/router that doesn't belong to Orange?

The modem/router I have is a D-Link G624T.

If someone could give me some advice I would appreciate it.

A:Connect a Wireless Modem to ADSL modem for Wifi

The "nokia siemens SL2_141" is a modem/wireless router combo; I assume that "A Wireless Modem of MTS" is also a modem/wireless router combo.

If my assumption is correct you can use the Nokia as an ethernet switch and wireless access point ...

JohnWill's procedure (Aug. 30, 2008) for configuring a secondary router as a switch and, optionally, wireless access point follows.

Connecting two (or more) SOHO broadband routers together.

Note: The "primary" router can be an actual router, a software gateway like Microsoft Internet Connection Sharing, or a server connection that has the capability to supply more than one IP address using DHCP server capability. No changes are made to the primary "router" configuration.

Configure the IP address of the secondary router(s) to be in the same subnet as the primary router, but out of the range of the DHCP server in the primary router. For instance DHCP server addresses 192.168.0.2 through 192.168.0.100, I'd assign the secondary router 192.168.0.254 as it's IP address, 192.168.0.253 for another router, etc.

Note: Do this first, as you will have to reboot the computer to connect to the router again for the remaining changes.

Disable the DHCP server in the secondary router.

Setup the wireless section just the way you would if it was the primary router, channels, encryption, etc.

Connect from the primary router's LAN port to one of the LAN ports on the secondary router. If ther... Read more

A:How to configure wifi modem having router with DSL modem ?

Hi there,

On the second router, DHCP needs to be disabled and assign a fixed IP within the router's IP scope (with Wi-Fi capability) i.e. 192.168.1.3 (make sure that 192.168.1.1 to 192.168.1.3 will be in the IP exclusion list).

Hi all,

I bought a HP Pavilion computer last year that came with a Connexant 56K soft modem. I surf the net on this machine with a standard telephone line ... the speed that I get is therefore predictably slow.

Upgrading to a cable modem / DSL is of course an option, but I'm wondering if a new hard modem will alleviate some of my pain. So my questions are,

1. Will I really see an appreciable difference in speed if I do away with my soft modem ?

2. If yes, how do I go about upgrading ? I could buy a new modem in any store, but then how do I uninstall / remove this Connexant soft modem ?

3. Which are the best modems in the market which provide value for money ? Say priced upto $100 ?

Appreciate your responses.

thanks
foolhardy123

A:Upgrade from a soft modem to a hard modem ?

Can't say much about the speed although the hard modem will definitely take some of the load off of your cpu. Everything processed by the software modem is done by cpu, hardware modem will do it's own to my understanding. Once you go to cable or dsl you'll never go back, all I will say about that.

So I am updating my churches network and came to a setup I have never seen before. No one at my church knows anything about the setup except when they built the addition (about 5 years ago) they ran "a bunch of Cat5". They ran 3-8 jacks in every room. I have a closet full of about 50 cat5 cables of which only 16 actually have RJ45s on them and only 5 of which actually go to a computer. That stuff I was able to figure out. What perplexes me is the hardware setup.... I have seen modem to router to switch.

This install has a Comcast Modem with a built in 4 port router. 2 lines go to separate magic jack pro jacks. One is a straight cable to a wireless linksys router. The last is a straight cable to a 16 port switch. There is then a crossover cable from the wireless router to the switch as well. So on the switch port 15 goes direct to the modem and port 16 is a crossover to the router and back to the same modem..... I can figure out for the life of me why there is a loop going on here.

In either case the setup worked. So the duplicate line did not have an issue. I am so lost.

A:Modem to Router to Switch back to Modem, what....?

I would disconnect the cable going from the switch back to the modem/router combo. You're right. This loop is not proper. Loops should never exist on a switched network. I'm curious as to whether traffic is being forwarded around the network properly or if the switch being used has spanning tree support and might have shut down one of the ports wired up to the upstream network device.

It is connecting and verifying then says logged on then immediately redials. I have replaced the external modem with the same result. It's on COM3 and I changed that and the modem speed. I'm thinking about reloading windows because I'm out of ideas. What do you think? It's windows 2000 pro.

Now on my Mom's computer. I got mad and deleted here TCP/IP Dial-up in Network Neighborhood because she was going over her 5 hour limit on the internet and yelling at me about it. So I quickly disconnected it because when I deleted the dial-up connection my nephew made a new one and took her over her 5 hours again. Long story, sorry. Needless to say I broke it. Hi - I have a wireless cable modem from Time Warner in my bedroom and the signal was really weak in the living room, so I ran an ethernet network cable through the aprtment and hooked it up to the line in on a TP-LINK TL-WR841N modem. Could someone suggest how I set up the tp link to use the other wireless modem's network? I'm kind of new to this but can work my way through. Will it have the same network name and ip? Thanks for any help!

Hi All...

I just got a new PC on Monday - here are the specs off the top of my head (I am at work, PC is at home) - HP Pavillion 764, 2.6 Ghz., 512 MB DDR Ram, Lucent Modem, 120 GB hard drive, 128 MB nVidia GeForce MX 440 video card, Windows XP Home.

I connect via MSN 8 dial up. No cable/dsl in my area at all.

Ok, with my old PC I would get a consistent connection of 32000 bps. Now, with the new PC I am connecting at 21.6 or 24000 bps - which makes for a huge performance hit since I am an online gamer.

I was ok with the 32k connection - a lot of latency - but this is worse with the 21 & 24k connection.

I am still using the same phone lines, dialing the same #'s and using the same version software for internet connection.
The only difference is the PC, OS & Modem really.

Why am I connecting slower now and how can I fix this?
Do you think I should swap modems?

Thanks

First of all let me start off by saying that my modem is defective and overheats so i lose my dsl sync every hour. Found out it was defective by numerous hours of scouring the forums. Anyways i recently found a router/modem combo and was wondering if i could just use it solely as a modem seeing as that i already have a wireless router.

Hi!
I have used Windows 8 for weeks now. Last week all my VPN connections and UMTS modems suddenly stopped working. Before they were working perfectly. Whenever I try to connect to our company's SSTP VPN I get an error 633 "The modem (or other connecting device)
is already in use". I get the same error when trying to connect to the internet with my UMTS stick. Both connections (VPN and UMTS stick) work fine on other computers.
This is what I already did:

Restarted the PC (of course) - did not help.Recreate the VPN connection from scratch - did not help, same error.Looked into device manager (with and without devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices) - no errors shown there.Created a RAS log (see relevant pieces below) - I did not find the root cause of my problem there.
Anyone having an idea how I could analyze the problem any further?
Rainer.

A:Problem with VPN and UMTS modem: Error 633 modem already in use

Problem solved. I uninstalled all UMTS dial in software, rebooted the computer and now it works again.
No idea what led to this. I did not install anything related to dial in software since I have installed Windows 8 on this machine.

Hi, I have an old dial up account with some important email addresses which I don't want to lose. Currently I have them configured to download into Outlook via my broadband service provider on an Orange Livebox, connected by usb. So far so good. The only problem is the dial up service provider periodically asks me to connect by logging on to their dial up connection to keep the accounts active. Until now, I've done this using a very old pc. However, my wife would like me to get rid of my antique P75, so I would really appreciate if someone could show me how to set up my Athlon 3000 machine with built in modem to use both connections, though not necessarily at the same time. Thanks

Hi Everyone,

I can't seem to access my Westell 2200 from the usual address: 192.168.1.1
I can't remember if I may have changed any settings to have this happen. I know my DLink 634m has no addresses with 192.168.1.1 configured with it.

I've even tried connecting the modem directly to a computer to access it and no luck. I've already done the "hold reset for 10 seconds". Is there another way to do a hard reset so everying on the modem is factory default? Is there another way around this? I can't access my modem and I can't get Internet either.

Thanks in advance

I used to have an internal cable conecting the sound card to the modem card inside of the CPU. When I put in the new 3Com/USR 56k modem FX/VC/DT/SP, there was no connector to which to conect the sound card cable.

I read somewhere once, that one could connect the output of the modem card to the input of the Sound Card using a short cable on the outside back of the CPU to achieve the same thing.

The other option is to dedicate a speaker system to the modem card. (If i do this route, do I use a monaural speaker or a stereo speaker system--in other words, i think the modem is a monaural sound source but i wanna check for sure?).

I think it would be cleaner to be able to take the OUT from the modem to the IN of the Sound Card on the back of the CPU. Does anyone know if this will work?

I have just installed XP Professional and have lost all contact with my Sprint DSL modem. I have checked the properties box and the firewall seems to be inactive. Is there a way (read number) that I can ping my 10/100 card to see if it is being addressed? Need to find out if the problem is the card, the cable (although I put in a new one) or the modem.

Thanks

A:DSL Modem/Lan Card

Goto command prompt, type "ipconfig" that will give you address information including IP, Subnet, Gateway and DNS.

Then you can "ping" the address that you want by typing ping <address that you want to ping>

Note : If you lost the DSL connection make sure that the DSL modem is being assigned an address, if your service is using DHCP to assign the address make sure it has one, a generic address is going to start with 169.xxx.xxx.xxx if your dsl connection has an IP address starting with 169 it is not being assigned an IP from your provider, check your firewall conections.

If you have a static IP address (User assigned) then you can try pinging it.

Let me know how goes it.

Could someone tell me where I can get a "cord" for a Fax/modem card (pcmia card)for a laptop.
Thanks in advance.

A:Fax/Modem card

You have to be more specific, there are hundreds of PCMCIA modems. Try any local store - most carry many common ones that work with most modems.

If i am going to be receiving wireless signals through a wireless adapter from a wireless router will I be needing a modem card on my new PC???

A:modem card

Only if you want to send/receive faxes over a phone line, use your PC for an answering machine, or use dial-up if the wireless is not working.

I replaced a hard drive and did a fresh install of Win 98. I am unable to get the modem to work. The modem is recognized in the device manager, but when I try to use it, I get an error message #603, modem is not responding. Before changing hard drives, this modem worked just fine. Also the previous hard drive was loaded with Win 95. I have tried two (2) different sets of drivers, to no avail. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I was told I would have to buy a ($99!!) Embarq 660 DSL modem directly from Embarq to get my DSL service started... my question: is there another modem (cheaper) that is compatible with it? I've already looked on ebay and craigslist for used Embarq ones.

TIA

A:DSL modem compatible with Embarq 660 modem?

speaking in the UK
a lot of isps like to insist on using there modem/routers and will only provide support to you if you have there router / modem, in some cases, you can get a better price from the ISP....

Some dont care what you put on and also offer support .... Theres quite a few in the UK, ukonline, pipex

sounds like Embarq is one of those, you have to have our equipment or we will not give you any support

some useful information here, a lttle old but some useful tips that are still relevant
