Apps like MagicJack from one user stop working in another in Win8 Pro

Q: Apps like MagicJack from one user stop working in another in Win8 Pro

In Win7 (Home Edition), I used to login to admin account and start an application (say Magicjack VOIP for instance). As long as the admin account was signed in Magicjack worked no matter which user logged in. When I upgraded to Win8 Pro, Magicjack only works when my account (admin) is active. When other users log in and my account is signed in but inactive, Magicjack stops working.

Can anyone help me to set Win8 up such that my applications will work as long as I am signed in and other users log in?

Preferred Solution: Apps like MagicJack from one user stop working in another in Win8 Pro

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Apps like MagicJack from one user stop working in another in Win8 Pro

i avoided all this by getting magicjack pro and just plugging it into my router downstairs, the phone id's come up on my satellite phones not my computer, just the way I want it.

I am experiencing a bit of a weird problem.

Problem Description:
After an undetermined amount of time the internet browsers, and various other internet applications, cease to work. If I attempt to run PUTTY, when I make an attempt to connect I get an error related to a Buffer Overflow. I am, however, able to successfully PING destinations during this state. To temporarily resolve the problems all I need to do is Log Off and Log back on and everything works again for a while (a few hours). I ran Adaware, and SpyBot Search and Destroy, then booted up in Safe Mode (with System Restore OFF) and did a complete scan with Norton AntiVirus. Found a few things, but nothing too major. This seemed to make things better for a while, but then it started happening again.

System Details:
Toshiba P35-S611 running WinXP. As far as I know, OS is up to date with all updates. The Internet Borwsers I use are IE6 and Mozilla Firefox 1.0.4.

Any help very appreciated as I cannot fathom the reason for this weird behavior.

Attached is a HiJackThis Log.

A:Internet Apps Stop Working

This problem is happening every few hours. Are there any suggestions as to how I can investigate further?

Additional info, apparently other internet apps can continue working during this state. Example:

I was playing On-Line Poker via a locally executed application and experienced no difficulties. When I quit out of the application I discovered that both my Internet Browsers, again, did not function (they startup, but they are unable to resolve any sites).

A little more info:
Internet explorer seems to attempt to load a requested page but then responds that the page is cannot be resolved (I'll write update what the exact message is when this happens again). But Mozilla Firefox does not seems to even make an attempt to load the page. You make a request and it just returns an IMMEDIATE blank page.

Thank you in advance for any assistance!

Hey guys,

I'm really in trouble these days. some days ago i installed few games from app store on my Vaio laptop with windows 8.1 update and all my problems started.

First, i faced excessive memory usage by RuntimeBroker.exe , after wasting some hour searching around, foudn there is only one solution and thats removing all newly installed apps until the problem goes away x_X

So i started to remove, 1 by 1 until the last time one :| and problem still existed, so i made a terrible decision; suffering the problem and do not reinstall windows .

After few days and more and facing more problems when i ran a metro app, i changed my mind and uninstalled all metro apps to reinstall them and here we go

Now Metro apps are stop working 1 by 1 every day, getting unknown error messages and some apps like Viber, weather and skype not connecting to internet while others like the weather network, line, vaio apps and some other are working fine.

I searched again, and followed any solutions i could find, system restore, reinstalling apps, resetting network settings, changing network profile to private, resetting store settings, changing to microsoft account, using fiddler proxy, vpn connections, transparent proxies to bypass any ISP probs; but none of them helped me x_X

The only solution that now i have, seems to be reinstalling windows (refresh or reset).

Any other solution will be welcomed as reinstalling windows will waste me few days to have all my software back installed x_X

I've seen other people with this same problem, but the solution was complicated, and I know very little about computers. I HATE having to constantly restart my computer when this happens. My computer is older, and takes quite a while to restart, and I'm very impatient.

PC specs i see on HP seem to be fine for Windows 10, PC is 2012 not that old.
When you say apps stop working and have to restart to resolve this, but how does the PC react at that time with other things you do ? Are these Windows store bought apps or ones that came on Windows 10 ?

I bought a new laptop for myself and my mom wants to occasionally use it too, so we need two accounts for my stuff and her stuff.

When I first set up the PC, I set up a local account (administrator privileges) under just my first name, just like things used to be in Windows 7 and prior.

Then I wanted to set up an account for my mom, under her first name. The thing is, Windows 10 asks for a Microsoft account, i.e. an e-mail address, so basically I made a mistake and gave her e-mail address and set it up (also admin). I then realized only her e-mail address is displayed instead of her name, which is annoying. At this point I'd like to mention I had made a restore point.

So when I logged into her account for the first time, it changed to her full name (as registered in her microsoft account), which makes it look better, but I was bugged that I couldnt edit out her last name. However, this is not the main issue.

The main issue is, after I logged in to her account, and the set up screens showed up ("Hi", "Getting things ready" etc.) I thought all was fine and logged out again. Then I logged back into my own account.

And guess what? All the microsoft apps (Windows Store apps, I guess) no longer work in mine:

For example, the Calculator doesn't work, the Mail app doesnt work, the Alarms & Clock doesnt work, the maps app doesnt work, the windows store doesnt open, and when I double click a picture, I get "the remote procedure call fail... Read more

what can I do to fix this without losing any of my files?

I'm running XP Pro on a Dell Inspiron 8600 laptop. I have two users on it, mine being the main one. No passwords, no difference between them. The other user works fine, no issues. There's no icons on my desktop, and I can't righ click to see if a refresh would work.

I can click on the Start menu, but I can't get anything to run. The cursor moves as if it's loading the program, then stops. Nothing is running in the task manager.

On the other user, I've run a defrag, a virus scan, a spyware scan, and everything else I could possibly think of. Any ideas why one user would be fine, and the other doesn't function??

Any help would be appreciated!!

Hello friends,
I have installed windows 8 consumer version.I have cleanly installed avast internet security 7(windows 8 compatible). But after installing it,avast cannot update(it says it cannot connect to server). Also network apps like Mozilla, chrome, even internet explorer cannot find any page.(as if no internet connection is there;although I have connected to internet).

i have disabled windows defender and windows firewall though. But nothing works.
Strange thing is that after uninstalling avast all apps run normally as usual.
I have tried even Norton internet security(windows 8 compatible). The problem is exactly the same as that of avast.

A:Network apps stop working after installing AVAST in windows 8 CP

Usually just resetting winsock and TCP/IP stack will fix this sort of problem. Lower left corner of screen, right click and choose, Command Prompt Admin

Type the following commands into an elevated command prompt one at a time then hit enter after each one then reboot.

netsh winsock reset catalog (reset winsock entries)
netsh int ip reset reset.log hit (reset TCP/IP stack)

Hi everyone, would sure welcome some assistance in troubleshooting this issue......

Installed 64 Bit Windows 8 Pro as a clean install having previously been using Windows 7 (user profiles customized to my liking as per tutorial guidance on SevenForums and detailed below).

My setup is as follows: 4 HDD's each with 2 - 4 partitions, 2 X 2TB running SATA III via U3S6 controller card (one of which contains the "C" (System) drive the other being a Media - E: and Gaming Drive - F: Two further 750GB SATA II drives complete the picture as Data Drives. In Windows 7 the Primary partitions of each were assigned C (System - 2 TB No 1) D (Data - 750 GB No 1) (i.e. User Documents/Files/Folders) and E (Media Library - 2 TB No 2) (i.e. User Photo, Music, Videos etc.).

The "User" profile structure was further refined as:

Main Profile - Contained in "Neil" a Folder off the Root of "D" (i.e. "D:\Neil") - The "media" Sub Folders of this profile (e.g. My Music, My Photos) being assigned as Folders to the Root of "E" (e.g. E:\Photos"). The remaining folders (e.g. Favourites, Documents etc. as Sub Folders of "D:\Neil\Filing Cabinet" (e.g. D:\Neil\Filing Cabinet\Web Favourites)

All other Profiles - Contained in "standard" Sub Folders of "D:\Users (e.g. "D:\Users\Emma") using standard sub folder assignments.

This has worked like a charm since setting up 64 Bit Windows 7 Ultimate upon... Read more

A:Customized User Profile Issue - Metro Apps not working

I'm not sure, that registry keys will do the trick. AFAIK it's a security issue. Apps are storing some data in user profile - and this requires access rights to trusted level low. Moving user profiles doesn't grants this trusted level to the target folder.

Maybe there is also some other limit in sandboxing, that checks whether all App internal data storage locations belongs to the same partition like the sandbox container - but I'm not sure (haven't investigated this, because I don't have a need for that).

Maybe my remarks give you a hint to search in the right direction -maybe I'm completely wrong with my assumptions.

I have a rather annoying issue when I switch user, the mouse and keyboard stop working. I have to remove and reinsert each time to get them working again. Happens immediately after switch user, and then again once logged in as the new user. Some details on the hardware.

Mouse: Logitech M305
Keyboard :Logitech diNovo Edge with BT receiver
Motherboard: Asus Z87 Plus
OS: W7 Ultimate x64

These are USB 2 devices plugged into a USB3 port. Latest USB 3 driver is installed.

I have the PC setup to auto login after reboot and the mouse / keyboard work fine.

Any ideas or suggestions on why this is happening and how to fix it?

A:Mouse / Keyboard stop working after switch user

Can you plug them into USB2 ports? There's no real reason to plug them in to USB3 ports, and it's better to have mouse and keyboard in USB2 ports because they don't require drivers like USB3 does, which can cause issues like this.

My boss just bought a new computer for his office network environment.

It came with windows 10 home on it, and the network is controlled by an sbs2008, the 2 are not compatible. I was asked to Install windows 7 pro on the new machine so it could be added to the network environment without any hassle.

I made a windows 7 pro 32 bit bootable usb drive, ran into the usual usb3.0 issues with newer computers and win 7, so i added usb 3.0 drivers to it using win7-usb3.0-Creator, disabled secure boot in the BIOS as well as changing it to legacy so it actually recognizes the USB when i try to boot from it.

Mouse and keyboard worked during installation, the only remaining issue was that the partition was GPT which didnt work for win 7 , so i used CMD to diskpart, tried to convert to MBR but it wouldn't take it so ended up having to format it and then install from there.

It all went smoothly from that point on and i thought i was in the clear until i got to first time setup and had to make a user. The keyboard and mouse had once again mysteriously stopped working. So now i cannot add a user and get past the initial setup point.

I was wondering if anyone else has run into this issue and knows a potential fix.

The computer in question is an Acer tc-710-Eb51 with the following specs

i5-6400 quadcore @ 2.70 Ghz
h110 express chipset model
8gb ddr3 sdram
1tb serial ata/300

Hi there, I have an interesting problem. I just change from a Lenovo Helix to a surface pro 3.

Helix is fine app wise.

Surface Pro 3 is interesting in that the core apps work fine but the downloaded ones have trouble.

It appears to be a network connection issue.

I run Hyper-V and I created a internal VM network to connect my tablet to my VM (I did this because VPN software I use inside that VM screws up my ability to access resources I need)

Anyways, with that internal network card enabled, Core windows 8.1 apps work fine. But non core ones don't work. I disable that internal NIC and everything works again.

I didn't have to do this with my Helix and not sure why on my SP3, the core apps can't find the internet connection.

A:Core Win8.1 apps OK, non Core Win8.1 apps Not OK

hmmm now I don't exhibit this problem today and everything working fine without disabling anything. Sorry!

Here is a list of apps that will help tweak Win8 to a more personal likable level

These are apps that are known to work and do not require hacking of system files, only registry.
If you wish to add to this list, please do, but please make sure they do not hack system files, for stability reasons.
Unless they are very well known not to cause problems. Thank you for you cooperation.

My wish for this thread is to make it easier to locate quality apps to make decent changes to Win8.

Top of my list and fully endorsed by me, for what it is worth....

1.} WinAero: Close Threshold for Metro Apps
Close Threshold for Metro Apps is a must-have tool for all Windows 8 users. It allows you to improve ways of Metro apps closing. You will able to do much smaller mouse movements/touch "swipes" to close any app.

I have mine set to 350

2.} WinAero: Downloads / Software / Tiny Windows Borders
Tiny Windows Borders allows you to change szie of huge windows borders in Windows 8 RTM.

3.} Welcome to Classic Shell
Classic Shell is a collection of features that were available in older versions of Windows but were later removed. It has a customizable Start menu and Start button for Windows 7 and Windows 8, it adds a toolbar for Windows Explorer and supports a variety of smaller features.

I personally do not use the Explorer add on. There is no need for it as you have access to customize the

You can also create a button for any folder with dropdown menu showing its contents.

Two weeks ago I installed Windows 8 on my laptop. And truth told, I'm not fond of it... at all.

Very few options to personalize my desktop, the tiles, etc. As a simple user you like the OS or you don't, there's barely anything you can customize.

I've also found that Windows 8 doesn't like interacting with non-microsoft software. They have pretty tiles and applications of their own but things like VLC (which has a lot more options then the media player supplied by microsoft), Google Chrome etc., they just don't work together.

I feel like my laptop is confused about it's personality. It tries to be a tablet, or a windows 7 desktop. It doesn't have any flow to it.

However, I'm not ready to give up on Windows 8 yet, I would like to believe that there are good things about this OS. My faith mainly lies in WPF. I've had a presentation about it at school and it really spoke to me.
My question is, as a first year IT student, with basic knowledge of C#, SQL, HTML, XML and CSS, is it possible to program applications for Windows 8 with WPF?

I'm willing to learn a lot in a short period of time, but it has to be doable/combinable with my studies. The presentation made it seem like it is possible, but I wanted a little more input on whether it is easy to use or not.

My main interest lies in personalizing applications. Making them more adjustable, making the notifications and tiles more adjustable.

1. The modern apps having the titlebar which allows us to press close in the corner messes with the Start Taskbar if you have it set to the top of the screen instead of the bottom. When you mouse up to the top with and try to drag the file down as normal to close it using the old mouse behaviour it now brings the Start Taskbar down on-top of it, as though the Start Taskbar is using 'auto-hide', which gets in the way and sticks around for a good while, stopping me from closing the modern app.

2. When I have a modern app pinned to the Taskbar, and open, it will not update it's status. Take Mail app for exampel. The Start Screen tile shows me that I have two emails, but the taskbar pin doesn't have a '2' on it. I've seen pictures online that it's supposed to do this.

Taipei, February 4th ? Linpus, a leader in the field of open source software in the consumer space, announced the release of a new application for Windows 8. Linpus, one of the most successful open source vendors in the notebook and consumer device market, has recently added Android and Windows applications to its product range. Linpus' focus with this application for Windows 8, Gesture2Launch, was to utilize touch gestures to give an easier and quicker way to launch apps across the traditional desktop and Metro mode. In many cases, up to 4 taps can be saved when, for example, using a gesture to turn off your computer.
Linpus Gesture2Launch works in this way: after running the application the interface has a number of predefined gestures (in the form of the letters of the alphabet) and actions to map these gestures to, including: applications and to various actions like restarting your device. You can then choose to link the action to the letter of the alphabet you feel most appropriate and then simply write that letter anywhere on the screen to launch. Besides restarting your devices, some of the things you can launch are: control panel, file explorer, Windows store, music, media playback actions like play/pause, stop, next, previous music/video ? and also shutdown, log out and wireless on/off.
?Besides reducing actions to launch applications, Linpus Gesture2Launch makes it easier from a number of other perspectives,? said Rita Jing, vice-president of sales. ?Findi... Read more

I am running under Win8.1 and having a strange USB com problem that I can not solve. After establishing a connection to a USB Arduino Leonardo and successfully installing its driver, Win8 looses the port but shows it as in use. Here is the context:
After successfully communicating with the microprocessor, I monitor the device manager. I see COM8 under Ports(COM&LPT).
I go through a modify microprocessor code, upload and run cycle several times with no problem. The COM8 entry in DM stays the same. Then, I perform an upload and the COM8 entry disappears.
At this point, I have lost connectivity with the arduino. However, COM8 is listed as in use but appears nowhere in the DM. Eventually, after a lot of fiddling (uninstalling the device driver, plugging/unplugging the USB cable, ...) I get COM8 back. A little later, events repeat.
My (probably flawed) understanding of what is going on under the hood arduino-wise is this: the uploader (avrdude) kicks the leonardo into its bootloader by switching the COM port to COM7 and connecting at 1200 baud. It then reverts back to COM8. When this works, I see COM7 in the DM and the switch back to COM8 replaces it in the DM. When it does not work, COM7 disappears about 10sec after initiation of upload and COM8 nor longer appears in the DM but is still thought to be in use by Win8.
I'm guessing that Win8 does not like the port switching activity going on "behind its back".
Although I can eventually get things back to "... Read more

I usually reboot my computer once to three times a year. Every time I reboot my computer and reinstall windows 8 and then resign in with my Microsoft I.D. that I use for my computer it never remembers or syncs the apps that I have downloaded from the Microsoft Store app.

My question is, are any of the apps that I download or purchase from the Microsoft Store app remembered, stored or synced with the Microsoft Store in the cloud etc or do I have to redownload everything again and again and again every time I reinstall windows 8?

Thank you.

A:Win8 apps don't redownload or sync back after reboot

Hello mrje,

All apps that you install from the Store while signed in a Microsoft account will be remembered and listed in Your apps in the Store while signed in to the Store with that specific Microsoft account. This will be the same as OPTION ONE in the tutorial below. However, you will still have to download and install them again if you reinstall Windows 8.

Now I know that this issue has been discussed much around the web but most of the solutions focus Windows XP and/or are outdated. Some suggest updating video drivers, some say editing specific registry keys that don't exit in Windows 7/8, while others don't reply. So I'm posting here in these renowned forums with a hope that my problem might get solved here

The Direct3D acceleration for 32bit Windows applications is disabled. I need to enable this so that most games and Direct3D using Windows Store apps start working again.

How it went:

Previously, Microsoft WDDM v1.0 drivers were installed (from Windows Update) and the system had no problems. Everything was working, well, almost everything. That was when I installed Minecraft. As I launched it, an error popped up saying 'pixel format not accelerated'. I researched on that and found out that it was an OpenGL issue. I downloaded and launched GPU Caps Viewer and found out OpenGL v1.1 on my system, whereas Minecraft needed 1.4 or more to run. I further researched and found that the Microsoft's WDDM v1.0 drivers supported the maximum OpenGL v1.1 (well, at least for my GPU). However on Intel's official site, it said my GPU CAN support OpenGL v1.4. And also on Minecraft forums someone said that Intel's drivers were needed for older GPU's in order for Minecraft to work. So I looked at the Download Center, but the latest drivers for my GPU were for Windows 7 32 and 64bit not Windows 8 (https://downloadcenter.in... Read more

A:Enable Direct3D acceleration for 32bit apps in Win8.

No help yet? Well I can live without Minecraft on this system. For now I am reverting back to WDDM 1.0. One last thing that I have observed: The display tab on DirectX Diagnostic Tool shows two dlls, "igdumd64.dll" and "igdumd32.dll", on WDDM 1.0 drivers. While on the 64bit Intel drivers, it only showed "igdlh64.dll". Maybe thats why the 32bit applications weren't working. Well, thats it for now. Good bye

Have a high end workstation running Win 8 Pro x64 w/ Media Center. None of the internet-enabled Metro applications work unless I exempt them using Fiddler or similar utility. C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs folder

are the two folders that contain all the information for the Metro interface. All of the apps that appear on it are here. Before messing about with the Metro icons, backup these two folders so that you can easily recover any goofs by just copy and paste.

Ask me how I know about these "goofs", heh.

I just discovered that a non-admin MS account on Windows 8.1 can install WinApps from the Store. And that app can install an inbound rule in the Windows Firewall.

To duplicate my findings, create a hotmail account. Then in Windows 8.1 create a non-admin MS account using that hotmail acc just created. Then go to Windows Store and install Energetic Software Free Torrent. Windows 8.1 will not only install that app, but also create an inbound rule allowing traffic to that package.

That app is now a server running on my machine, accepting attacks and all sorts of nastiness.

So I guess that MS is saying that admin accounts are now not required to install software and modify firewall rules.

A:Sacrebleu, non-admin Win8 MS accounts can install apps and open inbound firewall rule

The reason why non-admin MS accounts can install Win Apps is because Win Apps have to be installed PER USER. That is, each MS Account user has to go to the Store to install her desired Win Apps, and that her installation is not active for other users of the same PC.

But by giving access to the Win Store to everyone, means that any MS account standard user can install Win Apps that modify the Windows Firewall, reducing the PC's security. I have also tried installing some Win App games, and they too create an inbound rule allowing incoming traffic thru the firewall. There are a lot of free stuff in the Win Store, and users will be tempted to install them.

There are 3 solutions.

A) If you have Win 8.1 Pro, you can use Local Security Policy to block the creation of MS Accounts. This means your users cannot use the default built-in Winapps instant messaging app or calendar. or Store, because you need a MS account to use them.

B) You can block access to the Win Store with a registry entry to disable the Win Store.Open Regedit, and navigate to
Make a Dword32 named RemoveWindowsStore
And set the value to 1.

Setting RemoveWindowsStore to 0 will reactivate the Store. So you can get WinApp updates for the default built-in WinApps.

C) You can let things be as MS desires, and let MS account standard account users install their own Win Apps, But you regularly go inspect Administrative Tools > Windows Firewall with Advan... Read more

Hi, I am on a limited speed line and win8.1 has started to download the update. I now find that is it is some 3G in size and that will take days.

How can I stop the download?

I have tried the suggestions here...

but of course that has done nothing.

Effectively I cannot do any online work until I can stop the download hogging the limited bandwidth.

Hello CarvedDuck,

You could disconnect your internet connection until you get an error that the download could not complete to stop it. Afterwards, you could reconnect the internet to continue on without the update downloading until you start it over.

Hello all,

I just updated my Samsung series 7 ultra (NP740U3E) to windows 8.1 through the store, updated drivers through the SW update utility, and now I am getting non-stop BSOD. Sometimes Windows will load to a few seconds after login screen, sometimes I won't even get to the login screen until I get either IRQL not less or bad pool header BSOD. I have attached 3 dmp files. DMP file 13187-01 is with driver verifier enabled. Thanks in advance for your help!

If this is already posted, my apologies.

In Windows 8.1, the images that are rotated are corrected automatically. The thumbnails on Explorer as well as the images viewed by Windows Photo Viewer are corrected.
However, when I view these same images on a Windows 7 computer, they are still rotated (thumbnails and Windows Photo Viewer).
Note: the images that are rotated, are imported by Play Memories Home or manually by Explorer.

This may be inconvenient, since it can be difficult to detect duplicates in Windows 8.1.

So how can I set such that Windows 8.1 stops autocorrecting the rotation position of the images in Explorer, so that detection of rotated pictures will be easier? (I mostly use the Win 8.1 computer and not so often the Win 7 computer)

If you have any questions, please let me know.

A:How to stop Win8.1 to automatically correct rotated images

Try rotating the images by right clicking them and selecting rotate left or right.
It keeps them rotated if you do it that way.

I just did my first PC Prep and transfer of user data from Win Vista to Win 8.1. I moved the user data to the users account (c:\users\"username"). However, I just realized that the Folders shown in File explorer under This PC are for the original user I created - the wrong user. Is there anyway to change this?

Other solutions would be appreciated as well. I want the user to feel the least amount of pain when moving to Win 8. Thanks

A:Win8 Folder Structure and User Accounts

I probably should have mentioned that the original account was a Windows Live account which I am not using. I do not see that user on the Windows login screen but folders were created for it and it is the default for my programs such as Internet Explorer. Right now I have had to copy the users Favorites to the other accounts Favorites folder so the user can use IE.

This is probably something simple - I hope. Also for the record, I am logged in as the user and have been as I've been trying to set up Outlook and IE. Windows 8 keeps bringing me to the original (Windows Live) account.

this shit microsoft system is forcing me to use an email to modify my computer/user name..
since i updated win8. i just entered a stupid email, but even better, microsoft morons
engaged a verification of that email so i can't even add any email..

& the thing is, i dont want to add any email..

i want to add any string for the user.. when i wanna reset it..

if i reset it manually under windows & restart, it still forces me to use an email & crash & wont let me log into windows
either, i had to do a backup using a virtual mini xp environment in the ram at the startup.

what id like is to revert that update, make the computer user system like the old one,
without forcing ppl to use emails or have them validated by microsoft or not.

A:Win8 update & user login restructured..

Ranting doesn't usually get you much help here. If you have a problem, ask a question and you'll get the help you need.

You do not have to use a MS E-mail account, you can create a local account. Windows 8.1 and Windows 10 are the same.

Local Account - Switch to in Windows 8

You can also setup a local account during install:

Clean Install - Windows 8

See 18. If you want to Sign in to Windows 8 or 8.1 with a Local Account

Agree it should be a lot more evident how to do this during install rather than be hidden but at least it can be done.

We are preparing some deploy of Windows 8.1 tablets to use the native Metro (Modern) email Client using EAS to connect to a Lotus Domino Email Server.

Initially we can configure the email server connection, via Exchange Active Sync, without any issue and everything is working and syncing good.
At this time OS version was 6.3.9600 16384.

After Windows Updates the OS version is now 6.3.9600 17415 and the focused email client stop working and don't sync.

Looking for the account definitions when OS was on the previous version
(6.3.9600 16384) it was possible to define if the connection will use SSL or not. With the new OS version (6.3.9600 17415) the same account settings show now a "ghosted" option to activate or deactivate SSL. This could mean the newer version are forcing the SSL use...

From the server side the SSL is up and running and I already setup the same account, that have trouble with the Windows Client, in a Android Tablet using SSL and also with Windows 10 and it work without clues on both.

If I decided to make the Windows Updates before setting up the email Client using EAS even knowing the settings required for the account config are absolutelly correct, the email config routine insist saying "to check the parameters" and apparently the account is not added ... but ... but if I reboot the machine and look for the account it is there with the settings inputed and with SSL checked and ghosted, but continuing not working.

I was told to never use the Guest user account as it was not safe to use. I was told that I should open up another standard account without a password.

What have you learned and how good do you feel about the source of this info?

A:Is the Win8 Guest user profile account unsafe to use?

Hello rfharbin, and welcome to Eight Forums.

Actually a standard account has more rights than a guest account, so creating a standard account that's not password protected is a lot more unsecure.

If you want someone to have temporary access to your computer, you can turn on the guest account. People using the guest account can't install software or hardware, change settings, or create a password unlike they could in a standard account.
Guest Account - Turn On or Off - Windows 7 Help Forums
Instead, I would recommend to either create a standard account with a password, or turn off the guest account when it's no longer needed say after your house guest leaves.

Hope this helps some,

Quick question:

Is there any obstacle to transferring user account (personal data) from Vista to Windows 8?

Had a PC brought in, power surge killed the PSU and motherboard. Hard drive was fine, explained to client that data was salvageable, client said they would go ahead and shop for a notebook. Copied user account and personal data to USB flash drive. Was in the middle of copying to flash when client walked in with a new PC in the box, HP Pavilion (like the old one) preloaded with Windows 8. Now I must admit I have not worked on windows 8 much. If all the old data is 64 bit there shouldn't be a problem? What about 32 bit files?
Thanks in advance.

I have two computers with the same problem. One is running Vista and the other (this computer) is Win7. My problem has been going on for a few days and I am not getting anywhere. I have done a number of things to try and fix it.

When my computer is online and I open any program, i.e. Word, Excel, Power Point, Adobe Reader, Norton, Windows search, etc or if I try to run a program from the internet my computer stops, locks up the application I attempted to open. Then a box appears that says "application name has stopped working".

If I am off-line the programs open and run fine.

Internet Explorer runs fine.

I have run...
Malwarebytes AntiMalware
SuperAntispyware Professional
Norton full scan
I have gone to the "admin command prompt" and ran, can't remember the name c??/???????? - it showed no problem

Do you have an idea. It seems obvious (I could be wrong), that it has something to do with my computer checking online when it opens an application.

Any help we be greatly appreciated.
