What trash can I take out?!

Q: What trash can I take out?!

I have a dirty computer. Things need to be removed but I'm not sure what. At night, when sleep finally comes, pop-ups plague my dreams. I have too many things loading when I start up. New object show up on my computer for no reason other than to seemingly point and laugh and call me names. Any suggestions:

Preferred Solution: What trash can I take out?!

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

I know that a lot of people accidentally delete their recycle bin - but in this case I noticed that the icon was missing - and only the icon - the words "recycle bin" are there, and I can open the folder and use the operations, but the picture icon of a trash can is missing. Any ideas?

A:Missing trash icon - ONLY ICON - not trash bin

The desktop icon is just that, an Icon (Shortcut) the recycle.bin folder is not deleted.

So, just recreate the icon & your done!

Q: Trash

Emails from unidentified users used to go to my trash can so I could do a "sweep" and delete and block any further. This seems to have disappeared after upgrade?.
How do I get it back if I can at all.

Can I retrieve deleted files after the Trash has been taken out? With the right random key strokes, my 2 year old has deleted Call of duty 4 from our computer.

It was in the Program Files folder of course in a folder called Activision. I know, becasue I was tweaking in it, the I minimized it and showered. I came out it is gone, and the trash can is empty. I assume he did that, maybe this is the first signs that he will be a computer genius or something.

So can i get it back? We can re-install the game, but we don't want to start all over (in the game I mean) if we don't have to.

A:After the trash?

To retrieve it without any file corruption is a gamble. Once the recycle bin is empty, Windows might have already started overwritting the files
It would be best to reinstall the game

I have a Dell 1525 Inspiron. Last year, my hard drive started failing. I limped along, until finally buying a new hard drive nine months ago. It seems that this one is failing as well. I am wondering if my computer has something else wrong that would make it go through hard drives, or if I am just unlucky! When I run the Dell & Seagate diagnostics it was showing a SMART error, but when I ran both sets of tests this past weekend, both tests passed fine.

Here's the error codes I am getting:

Is it worth installing a third hard drive, or should I just start saving for a new computer?

Thanks for any help!

Just in case, backup all your information or make a mirror image of your harddrive.

And a harddrrive costs a lot less than a new computer.

With Win 10 you can do a clean install.
Since you do not give a model number, if you have a PCIe drive, you may need to change the SATA in the Bios to AHCI.

Hi Folks,

After a few days of slow responses on the pc, and suspicious things like ATF Cleaner saying there were no temp files to delete when I figured there should be, I decided to run some scans.

Both MBAM and Avira notified me of a trojan on my pc. Both said they had quarantined it but afterwards I was having trouble loading web pages, e.g. Google. I restarted the pc and the web pages loaded okay but I'm still a little concerned.

It all started a few days ago when we got a phone call from somebody saying they were from Microsoft and had noticed we had a virus on our computer. Naturally we thought it was a scam and refused to talk to him. Then, a day later, I was using my Hotmail account to send an e-mail and received a router message saying it couldn't deliver the message. But the e-mail address it said it couldn't send to was unknown to me. However, I tried again and it worked okay.

I ran the MBAM quick scan after this, and an Avira scan, but nothing showed up. Then, of course, the pc started running quite slowly so today I decided to run a full MBAM scan and it said it quarantined a trojan in a app called SPFLite.exe. This is an app I downloaded some time ago and thought was safe. In fact I'm pretty sure it is but I deleted it anyway.

During this scan, and after it highlighted the trojan, I then got a warning from Avira about a TR/Trash.Gen trojan, which was then quarantined. After this, as stated earlier, I couldn't load any web pages but after restarting... Read more

On my old computer, I had found a set of folders which would store almost all my video previews as actual incomplete video files. Needless to say, it wasn't just from P2P. There were a lot of files there, and the name of the folder was content.IE5. Although there were some naughty things in that folder I wouldn't want anyone seeing, it freed up a considerable amount of space getting rid of that stuff.
I found content.IE5 on my new computer, but every one of the subfolders seems to be empty. Maybe I'm looking at the wrong times or something, but I know I happened upon a folder similar to the original trash folder I'm talking about. It may have been content, but I'm not sure. With the stuff I've been deleting off of the computer this last week, there's little reason for the total number of GB left on the computer to be so low. I'm trying to find those folders before it really comes back to bite me.
Now for reference, my old computer had windows 98 and my new one has Windows XP with Service Pack 2.

Hello, what is the new PC's operating system? Win7?? 32 0r 64 bit. Also what Antivirus is installed? Some types of malware will disable MBAM (MalwareBytes) and other security tools. If MBAM will not install, try renaming it.Before saving any of your security programs, rename them first. For example, before you save Malwarebytes', rename it to something like MBblah.exe and then click on Save and save it to your desktop. Same thing after you install it. Before running it, rename the main executable file first***Right-click on the mbam-setup.exe file and change the .exe extension to .bat, .com, .pif, or .scr and then double-click on it to run.If after installation, MBAM will not run, open the Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware folder in Program Files, right-click on mbam.exe and change the .exe as noted above. Then double-click on it to run..Next run MBAM (MalwareBytes):Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.Download Link 1Download Link 2MBAM may "make changes to your registry" as part of its disinfection routine. If using other security programs that detect registry changes (ie Spybot's Teatimer), they may interfere or alert you. I recently (within the last week) got a virus that I cannot seem to get rid of. When running a scan with A-Squared, Malwarebytes Anti-Malware or Avira Antivir, when the the scan gets to the file (msconfig.exe) where the virus is apparently located, the program being used to scan for the virus freezes and if I try to do anything else, my laptop freezes. I am having no luck getting rid of the virus and downloaded HijackThis to get rid of it.

Hi, I've done a low level format, overwrote my drive several times with KillDisk and re-installed my OS several times but this folder keeps appearing on my usb sticks and external drives, .Trash-999. I followed some instructions on bleeping computers and downloaded Flash Disinfector, which when sent to VirusTotal was full of infections, I found a file from this on one of my usb pen drives which I must have missed, is it this causing the re-infection.

I don't know what this folder is but when googled most people say it's a worm of some kind, can anybody tell me if this is part of running a ubuntu live cd or tell me anything, thanks.

A:.Trash-999, Can Anybody Help, infected?

I believe this file is created by Ubuntu as a recycle bin safe zone. If you are deleting something while using Ubuntu see if it shows up in this file. You should be able to delete the contents and they will be sent to the recycle bin if you are also running windows on the machine. You can then empty the recycle bin.

Go here and scroll down to the bold print heading "Recycle Bin - Repair or Replace."

Click on the blue link to open a registry repair file from DougKnox.com.

Click on File->Save Page As...to save the file to the desktop.

Double click the file on your desktop. You will be prompted to enter the information into the Registry. Answer yes to the prompt.

After the file has completed. Right click on the desktop and click on "Refresh."

This should fix the recycle bin problem. Still working on the rest.

Some of you are going to think I'm an idiot. I've had a computer absolutely thrashed by a download happy niece. It's had such a high level of spyware and junk programs that it was left nearly useless.

After consistently using a "Process killer" program to kill processes and delete their ".exe" files, I was making much of headway, then came the vicious and last big hurdle. There was an .exe file that would run about 5 at once, and I don't recall the name. If I would kill it, it would then start another one. I couldn't delete it's .exe in the Windows\System32 folder because it was "in use." It's parent however was "SYSTEM.EXE" and so I did a search for it, killed it's process and then got it to the trash bin, all the while I had a 60 second countdown imposed upon my when the computer would reboot.

Upon reboot, everything looks normal until I should see a login screen, but all visible is the cursor and nothing else. If I start up in safe mode, I essentially get the same thing, and If I attempt to boot from a CD, same thing, same screen.

Do I have any recourse to get that System.exe out of the recycle bin? Is it possible with DOS command prompt perhaps?

Thanks a ton for any help from you guys here. I've had excellent help here over the years, beginning 4 or more years back when I got a vicous virus on my computer, perhaps thanks to the Department of Homeland security who now admittedly can &q... Read more

My 1 terabyte WD Ext HDD says it needs reformatting. I have ordered a 2 terabyte WD Ext HDD to put the recovered data on. While waiting on the 2TB to arrive, I got out a 500GB WD Ext HDD, I hadn't used in a while. (It was working perfectly when I put it away). Now, my computer wont recognize it.

Since this is the only Ext HDD I have plugged in, I assume the picture refers to it.

A:Should I Trash This Machine?

With either external HDD plugged into the Back USB port of the computer, go to Start/Run and type diskmgmt.msc and press enter. In the Disk Management window in the bottom pane, does your HDD show up here? Does it say the file system is Unallocated Space? Or does it say the Disk # (eg) Disk 1, Disk2, etc in Not Initialized?
If the drive doesn't show up in Disk Management, go to Start/Run and type devmgmt.msc and press enter. In the Device Manager, are there any devices with yellow flags? Or, under Universal Serial Bus Controllers, is there an Unknown Device? If so, right click it and Uninstall it. Unplug the USB cable from the Computer end. If the external has it's own power adapter, be sure it is the correct one, and use it. Plug it directly into the wall and not through a Power Strip or Extension cord as this diminishes the power. Now plug the USB cable into the Back USB port of the computer and not the front or through a Hub as these ports are weaker. You should get new Hardware Found.

So please do not recommend reformatting. It is out of the question. The file has to be removed first.
I can't even touch any file without it hanging and restarting explorer. The only thing that seems to work is right clicking on the trash bin icon on the desktop and choosing empty bin. Otherwise it won't let me touch any files. Has anyone has this problem? Please. I need your help.

What you see as a jpg image title is actually a short section of a completely separate HTML document, which is intended to display that image in a browser. The actual image should have the title hurricane-sandy-after-landfall.jpg

I cannot even speculate on how that piece of HTML code became saved as an image filename. I would just delete them, then run CHKDSK to eliminate any faults in your disk index. As to them being in your trash directory, don't you clean that out routinely every so often?
