Alpha Centauri and Win2000

Q: Alpha Centauri and Win2000

Hi folks,

Just a quick question. Does Alpha Centauri work on Windows 2000? I bought it recently and it don't work. Just trying to figure out if I've a duff copy or not.

Cheers,

Peaker.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hiya

Is this it:

http://www.firaxis.com/smac/

If so, there are some patches:

http://www.firaxis.com/smac/downloads.cfm

As well as that, Have you got the latest games update from Microsoft, to enable games to be played on Win2000:

When you say it doesn't work, in what way?

Hello everyone.

I hope someone can help or at least point me in the right direction.

operating system windows XP home ed 2002 version service pack 3.

When I start up Sid Meier's Alien crossfire I get this message from my Comodo Firewall.

In red.
It says 'It has temp blocked this application. It has tried to execute shellcode as a result of a buffer overflow attack'.

Application. Terranx.icd.

This is typical of a bufferoverflow attack.

It has only just started to happen within the last week and;

1. I had the fire wall switched off at one point for a while.

2. I think it may have had an update during this period.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Stupidly I think I ignored the warning a couple of times.
Is this a problem or just a glitch in old software?, my copy of Alien Xfire is ten years old.

Thanks for any help,

Sorry, but there are multiple questions w/in this post... help!!!

Running Win98SE, using a DVD-ROM drive to run/play SMACPP [Sid Meier Alpha Centauri Planetary Pack] CD game. Have played this game many many many numerous times, even yesterday. Every night the PC gets shut down.

Upon trying today to click the icon on desktop to load the game, which must run w/ the CD in the drive that it was originally loaded/installed from, the monitor goes to a grey screen, and then the PC locks up; totally locked, mouse is dead, all is lost... Control-Alt-Delete does nothing but give vent to frustration... After performing hard reboot, tried numerous times to play, even directly from the CD, each w/ the same grey screen result.

Ran Norton Sys Diagnostics upon entire system = all came back good, except... CD-ROM that this game is in gives the "Error Reading Sector 1054 (0)" code. Ran same diagnostics upon only this CD-ROM, using other games Myst, etc.], all of these others came back good.

The SMACPP CD has NOT been removed from the tray, it is not dirty, scratched, marred, etc. Even after cleaning it [for the heck of it], still getting same error code...

So, after that long preamble: (a) why is this happening, (b) what does this code imply, and (c) is there any means to remedy this situation, so that can play this game, w/o any further lock-ups?

Have tried looking at Symantics website for help; their Master Code list does not have a 1054, as it jumps from 1049 to 1100... grr... Read more

I have to seperate hard drives C: is a 40 gb drive and D: is a 80 gb hard drive. i selected new install when i was setting up WinXP And figured it was going to delete everything off both drives but it ended up only deleting everything off of the D: drive and left only My Install of WinXP on that drive but when i checked my C: drive Win 2000 was still there along with all my other folders i had before i upgraded. When i start up my machine it asks me whether i want to use winXP or Win 2000 on start up. My main goal was to completely erase everything off both drives and just have WIn XP installed. My question is there anyway to get rid of Win 2000 And erase all the stuff that is still in the C: drive so i can have a fresh start and only have WIn XP on my computer? By the way Win 2000 is in my C: drive.

Pretty basic question, perhaps, but here goes anyway.

As part of my MSDN subscription, I receive copies of Windows 2000 Professional and Windows 2000 Server (even Windows 2000 Advanced Server).

I've installed 2000 Professional on my laptop platform, and the installation went very smoothly with no real problems at all - to my great delight all of my existing applications worked fine !! On my laptop, I use a mixture of FrontPage 2000 and Visual Interdev as part of my web development education - with PWS as my web server.

I was considering installing 2000 Server (or even 2000 Advanced Server) on my desktop platform - one reason is so that I can have a proper look at IIS as the web server (and I've been told IIS only runs on Server), but I suppose mainly out of curiosity so that I can look at 2000 Server.

As my desktop platform is currently a standalone machine with no network connections at all, would it be OK to install 2000 Server on that platform ? Also, what are the main differences between 2000 Server and 2000 Advanced Server ?

Any thoughts on this welcomed.

Ray

A:{Advice Given} - Win2000 Server & Win2000 Professional

Greetings

I pulled this off M$'s website:

Windows 2000 Server, the multi-purpose network operating system ideally suited to workgroups and small business environments, lets organizations securely and cost-efficiently Internet-enable their business.

A separate edition, Windows 2000 Advanced Server, is designed for e-commerce and line-of-business applications. It includes everything in Windows 2000 Server plus availability and scalability features that support higher volumes of users and more complex applications.

A third edition, Windows Datacenter Server, will be released after Windows 2000 ships on February 17. Datacenter Server will include all Advanced Server features plus greater processing and memory capabilities to meet the needs of intensive online transaction processing (OLTP), large data warehouses and large Internet and Application service providers (ISPs and ASPs).
So, as far as I can see... if you are just putting it on your own PC, to have a look at IIS... then plain Server is the way to go. Advanced Server might actually be slower, because it does not have a team of Servers connected to it...

For some reason, after choosing a png, psd or tga that has the alpha channel enabled after saving, it doesn't appear once the texture is chosen when applying it on a surface in the material editor.

I can preview the textures in programs like windows fax/photo viewer and it shows as transparent, but is either white or grey fill in when placed in max.

Is there something else I must do to make it show through? In the viewer it would show as a mostly white texture, instead of the metal grate it's supposed to be.

Looking to try and convert this alpha logo to DST but i cant seem to find any converters. Is there any programs out there? or anyone that can help me convert this?

Thank you!

A:Alpha Logo to DST?

Hi and welcome to TSG, there are some fairly expensive commercial programs that will do the conversion as well as some free or inexpensive ones that require a lot more user interaction to get good results. A search through some older posts in our "Digital Photography & Imaging" forum will find discussions on both types.

Due to copyright issues, this web site no longer permits members converting graphics files to DST files for other members.

Has anyone ran this yet?

I haven't ran it on Windows yet, but I did run it on my Powerbook G4, I'm very impressed with it. Really the only differences between 9.6 and 10a is the rendering engine, but it seems to be significantly faster. I used to use Opera as my primary browser for any OS, and have since about 2000, but a few months ago I dropped Opera for Safari on my mac because Opera was just too slow and giving me a pinwheel at times I didn't think it should.

I did delete every bit of Opera 9 before installing Opera 10, so some of my speed increase maybe attributed to a fresh set of settings/preferences...

Was just wondering if anyone else has given Opera 10 a shot yet and what they think.

You can get it here: http://www.opera.com/browser/next/
They are of course clamining its much faster ect. And it does pass the Acid 3 test, which is somewhat cool.

I just found this [link] and decided to post it. FireFox's 3.7 Alpha 5 lets you throw your tabs on the top of the browser window, right below the title bar, like Chrome. I've been wanting Mozilla to do that for a while now. xD

A:FireFox 3.7 Alpha

It's looking good so far, but they really need to remove the title bar for it to be on par w/ Chrome. Tabs on top AND flush w/ top of screen when maximized is what makes the feature great in Chrome (allows less precise clicking, if you're like me & don't switch tabs using key shortcuts).

probably best to talk to the company or post a request on their forum
http://msgboard.alphasoftware.com/alphaforum/

What windows version is it currently running on ?

windows 8 does have a compatibility mode

I have a small wireless network and i set encryption to WPA instead of WEP for tighter security but I kept having problems with a couple of the pc's not going online and at other times all 4 didn't find each other. I tried WEP but it's not as safe as WPA and it didn't work well either. I heard of a product called Alpha Shield. I checked it out and bought it. Now, it's a firewall, blocks all 3rd party pop-ups, makes your pc invisible to hackers, stops MS Blast, My Doom and similar worms and has 100% guaranteed security. With everything it does, isn't my wireless network as safe as it would be if I had WEP or WPA encryption working?
Thanks,Jim

A:Alpha Shield

No. Alphashield is simply protecting the PC's, not the wireless network itself. Without WEP/WPA, anyone can get on your wireless network and connect to the internet through your router. ie. you're providing essentially free internet access to anyone within about 100 feet of your house.

If you don't care, then you're fine with just using that product.

FWIW, I don't think the problem you were experiencing was a WPA/WEP problem. I'd guess it may have been a shared key problem, or some other firewall (XP's built in firewall?) problem.

I thought that I would post as I have seen some software posts for invisible Web Surfing and I wondered what Alpha shield really does?

We use it at work at the request of management. We are XP, OS sp2 and are hi speed and have a router each and the Alpha Shield. The large company that looks after our computers did a test and it showed the Ports all in stealth and so I wondered under what concept this devise works and whether it is really good to use as they have given me one along with a router to use at home as I do take work home and do it on my notebook.

I really would appreciate comments. I should say that we have other security programs and have never had problems with our work computers, malware, viruses or other nasties!

I hope to hear from someone regarding this inquiry, thankyou.

Opera just recently released the new Opera 10.10 browser with support for an entirely new technology (Opera Unite), and they are already on their way for 10.50 which bring almost an entirely new Opera experience.

Right after 10.10 release Opera has also made available alpha versions of 10.20 which includes support for running Opera Widgets as standalone applications, without requiring the browse to run.

Hi

Can anyone offer any help with the Alpha Online Scan problem. I can see from these forums that this seems to be a common problem at the moment.

From your site I found out about HiJackThis and have run a scan. The report is below. I would appreciate it if someone could check this report and offer me any advice.

Dont know if this helps in any way but I have also run a Norton 360 comprehensive scan and that has reported no problems.

Thanking you in advance for your support.

Sorry if this has been addressed, I'm just too tired of trying to figure this out. My main computer (supposedly) is a desktop running Vista Home Premium 64 bit. The other two are a lap top and another desktop both running Vista Home Basic 32 bit.
My grandson who usually is very good on machines set me up between the lap top and my HP desktop that's running the 64 bit. Now I find out the laptop is the Alpha leader and not my desktop. Can this be changed. We couldn't set up the third one as Santa hadn't delivered it yet. I now can't connect to the internet on the desktop but can on the laptop. Help if you can Plese.

I've been looking in searches, but it seems kind of complicated and one went into a lot of detail, but seemed to relate to a game called QUAKE

I downloaded a free plugin for PSP and Photoshop (and put it in each) and tried it in PSP tonight. It says it requires an alpha channel.

The plugin is for adding snow to a picture, and even has a setting for watcing it fall (I'm not sure if this is animated or not. I'm new to plugins and effects/filters)

One of the websites I found about making an alpha channel showed the tab for channels on photoshop. So, I know where it is there (not sure about PSP)

I have PSP7 and Photoshop6.

I have an idea it's changing the texture in places on the picture, and maybe making some parts a bit transparent, or not as dense?

It's late, and I thought if someone could explain it simply (how to do it) or knows of a basic tutorial I could follow, that would be more direct.

Thanks,

~ Carrie

A:HJT log - Aunt's computer - Mr Alpha

Hello Mr Alpha and welcome to the BC malware forum. I only see 1 issue here.

It appears that there are multiple anti-virus applications running on this computer. It is not recommended to have this because it can cause file access issues and if there is an infection the 2 programs can block each other from dealing with the infected file. I highly recommend that you choose which application you want to keep and uninstall the other one(s) to prevent these problems.

Cheers.
