Copy file address after doing a file search in windows explorer

Q: Copy file address after doing a file search in windows explorer

Hi All
I have a rather large file system with lots of folders & subfolders. When I want to save previously on Xp operating system I'd search in explorer open the folder I want then copy the address (e.g c:\customer records\client name\job address).
In windows 7, when I copy the folder address i get this "search-ms:displayname=Search%20Results%20in%20electronic%20files&crumb=location:S%3A%5CSEQ%5C011_Estimating %5Celectronic%20files\CHERMSIDE , 17 smith ST"

As you can imagine I cant paste that into a save as field and expect it find the folder location.

Does someone know if it can do what I want? keeping in mind this is about time saving and productivity exercise so I need a simple solution. It is also on a work computer so a lot of settings are locked.

Appreciate any help

Preferred Solution: Copy file address after doing a file search in windows explorer

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Contradictory file dates in Windows 7 File Explorer when I use "Search My Documents" with *.docx

I modified a Word file earlier today. When I view the file in File Explorer the correct file date/time is displayed, however when I search for Word files by entering *.docx in the "Search My Documents" box (in upper right hand side of the File Explorer window) all Word files are displayed but this file shows a very different and contradictory date/time. The date/time in this case happens to be is 5 days earlier ? a date/time consistent with when I worked on it last week ? instead of when I modified it today. And yes, there is no question about this being the same file.

This is not just a one time occurrence or a one folder situation. In File Explorer for other files in other folders this same contradictory dating situation occurs. Namely; a file with the latest modified date/time shows the wrong date/time when it is searched for using the "Search My Documents" feature in File Explorer. I cannot say whether this situation is restricted only to Word files, but that is only where I have always encountered it because I work with Word files a lot.

This has detrimentally affected me because one time I thought I had totally lost an important file and beganworking again with an older and obsolete version of the file and had to redo a lot of work.

What is the cause of this? Is this a known bug?

The Windows Index needs to be rebuilt. Better yet, if you have a fast computer you can turn indexing off so you don't get bitten by this "service". You can also use a different search program such as Ultra File Search.

To rebuild the index, open:
Control Panel > All Control Panel Items
Click on Indexing Options
Click the Advanced button
Click the Rebuild button

Now with Windows 10 Windows Search works for me.
The specialty on my configuration was and is,
that data like documents and pictures are located
on the conventional hard drive. Other files are on SSD.
It was necessary to release the folders normally used from ?quick access? in file explorer and to add the really used data folders.
To have also the common access to the data folders I created  junctions with
cd /D C:\Users\mine
mklink  /J  Pictures  H:\Users\mine\Pictures
But normally, now I use the items of the newly configured ?quick access? in file explorer.

Hianhello to the tech community. I'm an bloke from Surrey, UK with less hair than sense. It's good to find a resource like this!

I guess this is a real tyro enquiry so please forgive my incoherence. Respect!

When I use Start/Search TDT (the darn thing) locks solid.

When I run XP Pro in Safe mode it works, no problem.

If you can show me the error of my ways, I'd be in your debt for five or ten minutes.

Seriously, though, this is a real PAIN and I would really welcome any help.

A:Windows File Explorer Search - yuk!

Welcome to TSF,

Not sure what TDT is, however, you might try running SFC /scannow form the start>run box to start the system file checker. If that doesn't work, you can re-install the search function:

Start>run type in %systemroot%\inf

Find Srchasst.inf, right click it and choose install

I have about 5 hard drives in my system. I open File Explorer in Windows 8 and click on "Computer". All the drives show up.

I click in the box that says "Search Computer". I enter in any search term. Let's say "*.iso" to find all iso files on all my drives.

I hit enter. NOTHING happens.

In Windows 7 this used to execute a search across all my drives.

If I double click on each drive individually and put "*.iso" in the search box then it works fine.

How do I search across all my drives from the File Explorer Computer location????

A:Windows 8 File Explorer Search

You must first index, where you wish to search - Control Panel - Indexing options. When you have selected all the drives you wish to include, go into the "Advanced" tab and rebuild the index. Go and have a cup of coffee whilst this is taking plce. With your drives, it could take a while!

Why are certain details, such as Frame Height, allowed in Windows Explorer when looking in a specific folder, but are missing when searching the contents of the same folder?

For example, I'm inside a folder (in details view) of video files and ask Explorer to show details of Frame Height. It will show that for certain file types. But when I search for one of the files by name, the Frame Height will be blank for the same file it just showed me the info for.

Hi there,
Windows Professional 8.1 - When I search for a particular file on my mapped drive (existing on our Windows Server), sometimes windows explorer will find it and sometimes it won't.
For example, if I go into ABE Construction I copy the name of a pdf file there "cat.pdf", I return back to "Work Purchase Orders" and I paste that name EXACTY into the search box - - - windows explorer finds it.
I do the exactly the same thing again, say for ABG Industrial, and all of a sudden I get a "no items match your search".
Could anyone please explain this inconsistent behaviour and how I could possibly fix it?

Hi, I have this absolute annoying issue with my Windows 7 Home Premium. If I leave my computer on for roughly an hour I will go and attempt to either rename a file or search a file in the normal os search menu. The second I type one letter the os locks up and I am forced to end the explorer.exe process. I have recently reformatted my computer no more than 4 months ago and prior to that I was given the same problem. I heard and read in select online searches this has to do with shell extensions of some sort, yet to this day I cannot find a definite solution. Please if anyone can help with this pain in the *** problem I would greatly appreciate it.

This has happened to me several times in recent months and I'm at a loss as to why...

Today's example: I was looking for "Spybot - Search & Destroy" (SSD) on my desktop in order to run it. My desktop is pretty busy, and after searching quickly through all the icons a couple of times, I decided just to search the drive; I figured it would probably be quicker (and I wouldn't get crossed eyes to boot :-) I searched and the first time I searched, Explorer returned that 2 files had been found - but there were no files listed! I reran the search again without changing any parameters, and this time the Explorer search engine found 2 SDD support files (their extension is 'SBI'). I went back to the desktop and this time located the icon to launch SDD (unsure if it had been there all along - probably). I checked the properties and sure enough, it said the executable was where it has always been - in my D drive, which is my boot drive. I have attached two screen shots as a typical example of what's been going on; I didn't take a screen shot of the very first search that showed 2 files but nothing listed, and I couldn't duplicate it. Since this isn't the first time this has happened, it worries me that something so basic to a PC should be repeating itself on what appears to be becoming a fairly regular basis. Does anybody have any insight as to what the root cause may be? My rig is fairly new; I built it myself; I've noticed no other problems at all.... ??????... Read more

A:File Appears on Desktop but Windows Explorer Search Shows Nothing

Hi Geordie

I don't see anything wrong with the results in the screenshots you posted. The executables are where they are supposed to be, and listed as such - - in a folder called "Downloads".

Actually, I'm wondering why SpyBot is in there, rather than in Program Files\SpyBot-Search & Destroy?

The only thing a Search would find on your Desktop is the shortcut, since the files are in the \Download folder.

I'm guessing that perhaps you were starting Search from a different location (leftover, perhaps, from a recent previous search). And the results were surprising since you'd searched a different location by accident.

Best of luck

I'm currently in the process of copying files back from the cloud in the exact same location where I had them before and now it says that the file name is too long and prompts to see whether I want to skip the file or not. The error message given does not
give the full file name or the path so it is impossible to see which files were copied successfully or not. This never happened with XP! Then afterwards I found that some of the files with long names did copy successfully whereas others didn't. I find this
to be a very user unfriendly process and I'm totally confused! These are critical files and I'm sure I haven't exceeded 260 characters or whatever. This is soOoO frustrating!!

A:file copy error message not sufficient + file name too long will not copy

Hi ,

There is a limit of filename length within Windows Explorer. In the Windows API (with some exceptions discussed in the following paragraphs), the maximum length for a path is MAX_PATH, which
is defined as 260 characters.
The shell and the file system have different requirements. It is possible to create a path with the Windows API that the shell user interface is not able to interpret properly.
This means that your long filename can only be handled at the command prompt level and you cannot drag and drop an illegal length filename within Windows Explorer.

Please simplify your folders and titles.

More information, please check the part of Maximum Path Length Limitation in the link below.

I was looking for some files from different folders in a computer so I searched for it using normal windows search and the result has come around 1000 files.

Now when I try to copy all these files and paste it in an external usb, it could not copy because most of the file names are same(though in different paths). Also, I'm not able to check the total sizes of the results.

I wonder then how I can copy all these 1000 files into my usb.

My OS is win xp professional

A:[SOLVED] how to copy all search result files into an USB (even if file names are same

Hello comonforall,

One laborious way to do this would be to temporarily rename them; for instance, if the file is called "Help", rename it to "Help(1)"; then when transferred to their final location, remove the numbers and brackets.

Incidently, what files are you trying to move? If they belong to the Windows XP Operating System; then, transferring them will be useless, because they will not in another location other than the one that they were originally installed.

Post back with the file names.

Kind Regards,

I've had this problem for a while now. The explorer is not allowing me to rename, move or delete certain files. It happens mostly with .mkv files. It displays the message "The file is open in windows explorer, close and try again ", I checked the task manager, and this happens even when no instances of the file are running. I managed to delete some files using command prompt, but I really want this solved and back to normal.

This usually happens when I move files between two partitions, or delete/rename any file in those partitions.

A:Explorer not allowing file operations (cut/copy/del)

Use the software Unlocker. It helps you do the following:

If you've ever been unable to delete a file in Windows, and can't figure out what program's using it, Unlocker is the solution. Have you ever seen these Windows error messages?
Cannot delete folder: It is being used by another person or program
Cannot delete file: Access is denied
There has been a sharing violation.
The source or destination file may be in use.
The file is in use by another program or user.
Make sure the disk is not full or write-protected and that the file is not currently in use.
Unlocker can help! Simply right-click the folder or file and select Unlocker. If the folder or file is locked, a window listing of lockers will appear. Simply click Unlock All and you are done!

Download it from here: Download Unlocker 1.9.1 - FileHippo.com
Hope this helps !

We've got a file server here in the office on which we have a separate folder for each client. In several of these folders are a document, specific to that client, but with the same name as a similar though not identical document in another client's folder. In other words in client1's folder there may be document.doc and in client2's folder there may be a document.doc. I have need to create a collection of the 400 or so document.doc files in one place but if I were to try to simply copy them from the search result I would get a message asking me if I want to overwrite the files. Is there a way, perhaps from the command line, to copy the files from the search results to the new location and append the name of the folder from which the file is being copied to the file? In other words, client1\document.doc and client2\document.doc will be copied to newfolder\documentclient1.doc and newfolder\documentclient2.doc. Is this something for which I should use robocopy? I've got two computers, one running xp pro sp3 and the other running win 7 pro sp1. The files are on an ms small business server 2011 and will, hopefully, be copied to a file on one of the two local computers from the server. Thanks!

A:copy files from search result and append previous location to file

You cannot copy a file with the same name to a new location without overwriting the previous version. Rename the file before copying it, If you want to keep the original file name in the original folder, then copy it and rename it before moving it. Of course if you rename the file then it will not get updated once changes are made.

I am a complete newbie when it comes to batch files and batch file software, so apologies in advance.

I've done some research on Google etc but I seem to just be getting more and more confused trying to use various different scripts and programs and reading different info on various websites.

This is what I need...

I have a folder with around 2000 files in it. I want to be able to copy certain files from this folder (normally around 40) and place them in a brand new folder, I want to be able to do this with nothing more than a txt file that has all the file names I need copying in it with every file name on a separate line.

I receive around 10 new txt files each day so you can imagine how tedious it is searching through 2000 files, picking out the 40 I need, 10 times a day everyday.

To make things even more complicated, the txt files I receive don't always have the correct file names in them, maybe there's a misspelling or a word or two missing for some of the names. That's ok when I'm going through picking out the files I need to copy myself because I can normally tell which file is being requested, but I can't see it being so easy for a program or whatever to do, I'm guessing it'll need to have a search feature where it picks out the most likely file.

I'd like it to be as automated as possible. I receive the txt file, make sure each file name is on a separate line then a program or script or whatever goes out and picks out the files (or most likely files f... Read more

Hello, everyone, I am using Windows 8.1.

This question has to do with File Explorer?s Move/Copy To options in the ribbon. I?d like to know if it?s possible to completely clear that list. I?m not interested in editing the list, just clearing it.

Occasionally, I need to look at my file trees in File Explorer, to see what's where, move stuff around, etc. It'd be helpful if I could display a tree in File Explorer, on screen, and then print a hard copy of what I'm looking at, so it remains accessible as I move to other trees, files, etc.

I'm old enough to remember the old Print Screen command, and there's even still a key labeled that on my keyboard, but of course it won't work. Or at least it doesn't print screen when I click it.

Is what I want to do possible in Win 8.1?

A:Can I print a hard copy of a file explorer tree I see on screen

Sorry for the confusion, but all the print screen button does is take a snapshot of your screen and saves into the clipboard so you can do something with it.
You can paste it into mspaint for example, save it as a jpg and print it that way.
Of course Windows 8.1 has a wonderful utility called the Snipping Tool that allows you to take full or partial captures and save them directly. Just search for it from the start screen.

Issue does not occur with any other files (Excel, PowerPoint, Access, Acrobat, etc.) Happens with only Word extensions (docx, etc.) If I open Word and open the file from inside Word, all is fine.

I tried saving documents in different Word extensions, saving to different locations, but still get the error--only when opening directly from Explorer or Desktop. I have repaired Office 2007 (Ultimate Version), uninstalled Word, reinstalled Word; tried the registry fix posted here and MS site (removing Data reg entry under Word). Used tool posted here to unassociate/reassociate .docs with Word. I reimaged my hard drive using an image from two weeks ago, but apparently it started before that, because I still get the same error. I reset my index and waited for it to regenerate. I'm sure there might be other solutions I've tried, but these are the ones that come to mind.

It is a three-week-old Dell 1545 laptop, 64-bit Vista. Not impossible to live with, but has me stumped. According to all the posts in networld and here, fairly common problem that seems to have no single solution.

If anyone knows of new tips, I'd sure appreciate it.

A:Windows cannot find file path\file name when opening from Windows Explorer

Error is "cannot find (path\name)...before someone yells. Also, thorough scan for malicious software, trojans, etc. Do not have BSPlayer, whatever that is. Also, if I search for the document in the menu, I can't open it from there either.

When I open file explorer (Open/Save dialog or insert image dialog) in Excel - it doesn't include search tab, but when similar dialogs are opened in other Office application there is search tab.

Also xlsx files have wrong excel icon - it is showing windows excel component 2010 icon.

Window Search is enabled and ticked.

What could be wrong?

A:File Explorer Missing Search

You could try repairing Office. Open Control Panel, select Programs & Features, scroll down to Microsoft Office, Right Click on it & this will open a couple of Repair options.

I'm in the process of repair/recovery of my machine (Dell Inspiron 8500 with Windows XP Home, Service Pack 2). I'm following exactly the instructions in: http://attachments.techguy.org/attac...chmentid=62075, but a problem has developed. The "software" file (which is the file that the original blue screen error message says is "corrupt, absent or not writable") will not copy to the new tmp directory to create the backup. My understanding from the article is that this backup file (software.bak) will later be used to restore correct settings for various software applications. Since I can't copy it, it appears that I am screwed, no? Or is there a way out somehow?

Thanks to anyone who's been there and can help...

BTW I have the XP installation disk that came with, and a diagnostics disk which I have not yet run.

A:Blue Screen: Registry File Failure; can't copy corrupted file to tmp directory

Never mind, I had it wrong--didn't read the document referred to above carefully enough. The procedure worked like a charm, and the document is very easy to read and entertaining to boot! (pun intended).

The document describes a procedure that closely follows a Microsoft KB document (which I now can't find) but does not contain any warning regarding whether the OS is an OEM (original equipment manufacture) install or not. The Microsoft doc says not to use the procedure on an OEM-installed OS, but I just did it on my Dell, so that warning seems to be incorrect.

Many many thanks for the help provided by this document and this site.

I would like to create a .bat to copy files from source folder to destination folder.
Some files in source folder already exist in destination folder (Same name)
What I would like is that files existing in destination folder to be rename to f.eks filename_BAK.extension.
Source folder include. FileOne.asp - FileTwo.exe - FileTree.txt
Destination folder include. FileOne.asp - (NO FileTwo) - FileTree.txt
Result. FileOne.asp (version from source)(Existing renamed to FileOne_BAK.asp) - FileTwo.exe - FileTree.txt (version from source)(Existing renamed to FileTree_BAK.txt)
Now in desination folder.: FileOne.asp - FileOne_BAK.asp - FileTwo.exe - FileTree.txt - FileTree_BAK.txt
Files in source folder are placed in different folders, but in same structure in destination.

Kind regards

I cannot copy or paste jpeg files from my computer to my SD 2GB cards. Also, I get this msg when I try to print jpeg files. Using Adobe Elements I am able to archive these files. Oddly enough I can attach and send these jpeg files via email. Prior to August '08 was able to do these tasks without a problem. I suspect that there is a software compatibility problem since this problem came on suddenly (maybe iTunes?). No problems importing jpeg files from SD cards. I've looked at several sites on the internet but none seem to have the right solution for my problem. THANKS for any help that you can provide! -Stu

A:Error copying file or folder; cannot copy img the directory or file cannot be created

This has caught me more than once.

The problem is a limitation on the number of files and folders allowed in the root folder of a FAT16 file system (as for a memory card) of 512. (Note, this number is reduced much further if longer file names than 8 characters are used, as most people will want to).

When transferring the files onto the card, new files will be rejected when you hit this limit.

So keep your files in separate folders, so they are not all in the root folder.

For files and folders in root it might be worth keeping your filenames under 8 characters in length so you can use the full 512 files on root folder.

Does anyone know how to write a script that would specifically
copy a file "File.ext" to the clipboard and paste it to this
"My Script.vbs" file?

I do not mean editing the VBScript file. I currently right click
"File.ext" select "Copy" then right click "My Script.vbs" and
select "Paste".

I would like to know if I can do that with a script. I have included
an example of the code used in "My Script.vbs" I have chosen these
file names and directory paths to use as examples for my post.

I thank you for reading this.

My Script.vbs
On Error Resume Next
Const OverwriteExisting = True
Set objArgs = WScript.Arguments
Set objFSO = CreateObject("Scripting.FileSystemObject")

If objArgs.Count < 1 Then
End If

For I = 0 to objArgs.Count - 1
Arg = objArgs(I)

objFSO.CopyFile Arg, "C:\Desktop\", OverwriteExisting
objFSO.CopyFile Arg, "D:\Desktop\", OverwriteExisting
objFSO.CopyFile Arg, "E:\Desktop\", OverwriteExisting
objFSO.CopyFile Arg, "F:\Desktop\", OverwriteExisting
objFSO.CopyFile Arg, "G:\Desktop\", OverwriteExisting

objFSO.CopyFolder Arg, "C:\Desktop\", OverwriteExisting

Hi Guys,

I want to make one batch file which daily copies yesterday's files from one folder & paste it to another folder.

C:/111 folder has following files.
1.zip had yesterday's date
2.zip had yesterday's date
3.zip had last sunday's date

now, when i will run batch file today, it only copies 1.zip & 2.zip & move to another folder C:/222

So C:/222 contains following
1.zip had yesterday's date
2.zip had yesterday's date

Please note , i have to run this batch file daily which should not require any changes.

I have Windows XP-Pro SP2 installed on a P4 1.8GHz CPU with 768MB RAM

I would like a script that opens a commamd window and calls for a file (icon file) to be copied to a specific folder on 5 different drives. I would like to be able to either paste in the file path or drag and drop the file onto the command window. The icon file will always come from the same folder "C:\WINDOWS\system32\00 ICONS\System Folders" and be copied, sometimes replacing a file with the same name, to these 5 folders:

"W:\WINDOWS\system32\00 ICONS\System Folders"

"X:\0 aAPPS\00 a Install First\00 ICONS\System Folders"

"W:\WINDOWS\system32\00 ICONS\System Folders"

"N:\0 aAPPS\00 a Install First\00 ICONS\System Folders"

"D:\0 aAPPS\00 a Install First\00 ICONS\System Folders"

I apologize if I am using incorrect terms. I don't know if a batch file could do this or if it would have to be done with vbs. I would appreciate the help. I know nothing about writng vbs script and only a little about writing batch files.
Thank you.

When I use the XCopy command in Windows 2000, I can copy any file I like; however, when I use copy-and-paste or drag-and-drop in either Windows Explorer or PowerDesk, I get the following error:

Cannot Copy File: Cannot Read from the Source File or Disk

I searched the Microsoft Knowledge Base and came up with only one article, Q224378. This article seems not to apply to my situation because it applies to Windows 2000 Server. I am running Windows 2000 Professional with Service Pack 2. I did attempt to install the fix that article Q224378 suggested anyway; but, I got an error message that I was attempting to upgrade a program that didn't exist on my system.

I have also learned that this error applies when copying from either of my SCSI CD-ROM drives, not when copying from hard disks or floppies.

Any Suggestions?

I was saving some email.
One file I named "14-01-05, Shipping Info.eml" ; the other "14-01-05, Order Confirmation.html".

When I saved the first file I was not paying attention and it went to the previously opened folder (un-remembered to me). No big, I saved it again to the correct folder along with the second file.

Then I went to Explorer Search to find and delete the stray file. I searched for " 14-01-05 ".
Only "14-01-05, Order Confirmation.html" came up.
Even when searching the folder that contains only those 2 files the search only finds the .html file, not the .eml file!
I only found the file by searching C: and finding a shortcut referencing a location.

Can anyone explain this?

A:Weird Explorer File Search Result

Hello Bob,

You may need to rebuild the index for it to show up if the index wasn't up to date at the time.

Hope this helps.
