PC Wont Start (Starts for a few seconds then stops)

Q: PC Wont Start (Starts for a few seconds then stops)

Over the past few weeks, when i went to turn on my PC it would start for anywhere in between 1 and 4 seconds and then completely turn off. After a few tries though, it would stay on. But today, after many tries it doesn't stay on.

When i start it, all fans, lights, drives turn on/light up then 1-5 seconds later everything just turns off completley. It doesnt even get to the point where it makes that beep sound. I thought it might be my power supply, but i bought a brand new one only a few months ago. i've tried reseating the RAM, cleaning the motherboard area, re-connecting wires/cables but nothing is fixing it.

Anyone have any ideas what this could be?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Almost all the time, even when not actively using my laptop the fan on the left starts and stop about ever three seconds. It bugs my wife so much I can not work in the same room as her, and I admit it bugs me to more and more. Any ideas how I might fix this, eg in the BIOs, or? I have changed the Windows cooling properties with no effect. I have also killed all the Startup processes, with no change. In fact, it does it when starting up, before windows runs, even after a full windows shutdown.

[first time posting; thanks for your patience] Model: T550.   Problem: when plugged in, the battery begins charging, then stops, and then begins again, in a loop, every few seconds. IMPORTANT: when the PC is off, the battery charges fine (i.e. continuously, without the on-off loop).   So, it is not the power adapter or the jack, since the PC charges continuously when the PC is off (as determined by listening to the faint buzzing in the transformer, and the lack of the flashing light that indicates the beginning of charging).   The problem may have presented after a BIOS or Windows update (i'm not certain, though).   I've tried using Divice Manager to delete the battery drivers and let Windows reinstall--no luck.    My problem is similar to that listed in another post, but that post was about T440s, did not have a good solution, and did not mention the detail about the problem being present only when the divice was powered on.  cf.  https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-T400-T500-and-newer-T/Charging-stops-and-starts-every-few-seco...

A friend of my wife that works with her called and said her computer won't turn on, I looked and this is what it is doing.
You turn it on and the green light on the tower comes on and you can hear it starting up the green light on the monitor is on the key board lite is not. nothing ever comes up on the screen because you can listen to it and it starts then I think before it can really do anytning it sounds light it shuts itself off, then right away it starts up, then shuts down, then you can hear it start, then you can hear it shut itself down, you can hear it doing this and will keep doing it till you shut it down by the tower, could a cd being stuck in the cd unit make it do that or any idea's?? pleae help this lady needs it for her business, Thanks

Also if it makes a difference--you can get I think it is a white box with red trim on it you can get it on the monitor screen and it says something like saving power 10,9,8,7,6,5,4,3,and counts down and then goes to sleep

My computer is an e-machines and is about a year old and for the past maybe 6 months ill turn it on and all the fans start up but the processor fan stops and then it wont boot up. Normally i just keep turning it on and off and it will eventually rev up really high and then slow down and then be fine adn work ok. Now its not doing anything, Just over and over turns on and then turns off while both other fans stay running. Power supply seems to be working properly. Doesnt make any noise and i have power everywhere. Any ideas? Thanks

Sounds like the CPU fan is dead. Replace it. In my area a new CPU fan is $20-30.

This is driving us crazy! We have replaced the motherboard and the power supply, but every time I turn on the computer it will turn on & off on it's own during the start-up process before it finally opens Windows & is ready to go. My son built this computer for me 2 years ago & everything has been fine up until now. He reformatted my hard drive twice in an effort to see if that would help too. We can't figure it out!

A:Computer starts & stops 4 times during Start-up.

The process of elimination;

Try taking out some Ram.
If possible Swap your Periferals to another MoBo.

Does the System pass the POST screen?
Ie. Is it a windows problem (is it physically Powering off or does it just apper to be?)

Hi, I have a very frustrating problem that just reared its ugly head last night. My computer started hesitating every few seconds, freezes, then starts the cycle all over again. It's difficult to do anything: browse the internet, use applications, or even type this post. I have not added any new hardware or programs recently except I upgraded Firefox last week but it has been running fine up until last night. Plus I uninstalled Firefox and it is still doing the same thing. I have Windows XP home version. So far I have deleted several programs and many other things from my computer that I could do without, I've checked my page file to see if it was correct and it was at the suggested amount, I scanned it with Norton's and it found no viruses, I scanned with Malbytes Anti-Malware and it found nothing infected, I opened up my hard drive case and cleaned/blew out the dust however it wasn't that dirty since I do this on occasion, I made sure my memory was not slipping out, I tried to defragment but my computer said that I do not need to at this time, I restored my computer back to a previous date. None of these things have made a difference. I was sure at least restoring it back would do the trick but it did not.
I'm confused to what the problem is and through my research can't seem to figure this one out on my own.
Does anyone have any suggestions or has anyone had similar problems?

The computer is constantly stopping for 15 seconds and then continuing for 10 seconds.

My computer was new mid-May '03 and when I installed Roxio Easy CD Creator 6.0 I began to have a lot of problems... and ultimately uninstalled it.

The Roxio program caused about 20 Windows XP (looks like backups) in the Control Panel add/remove program (one of them I cancelled).

I have XP -30 GIGs, 4 drives (32FAT a portable pocket drive & NTFS) plus I have a portable pocket drive.

Does anyone have problems with XP and Roxio Easy CD Creator?

And my computer starts for about 3-5 seconds then shuts down, when it starts the lights on the case work, the fans and heatsinks work, but there is no beeps when it starts and the motherboard doesnt display any lights. Is it possible that my motherboard is fried which causes the system to shut down and dispaly no lights from the mobo. That small black cylinder is a solid state speaker. There should be a 4-pin molex connector near the CPU socket. You will find a 4-pin connector on the power supply that will connect to this motherboard connector. As for any other 4-pin connectors, I don't know. There should be several 3-pin connectors for fans

Hi, I have a problem with my PC that I just peiced together. IIRC It's a celeron D, ASRock 775 Dual-VSTA, Corsair 1GB(2x512), 160GB HDD, 500ATX PSU, and a ASUS GeForce 6200.

My problem is that when I turn my system on, the power and HDD LED turns on for about 8-10 seconds and then the PC just shuts down. There's no video at all.

The real thing that bugs me, is that just a few minutes before I started having this problem, the PC was running fine when it tried to start up. It went through POST just fine but since my new HDD doesn't have an OS, it wouldn't continue, but that's ok.

Since I couldn't find an extra copy of windows anywhere, I tried using a system recovery for an EMachines PC that said it would install Windows XP as part of the recovery. It went through the recovery menu and everything was fine untill my PC just shut off unexpectantly, and then the problems started.

I'm wondering if the problem is because of the recovery thing I tried failed and messed up my HDD, but I don't really think that's the problem. For now, I'm going to go try and re-seat everything and see if it fixes the problem but any suggestions are welcome. I only learned so much from my computer engineering class and for some reason I can't dig deep enough in my brain to remember the crucial stuff that could be helping me right now...

Thanks in advance.

A:PC starts up for a few seconds then shuts down

It could be a heat problem. Remove and reinstall the heatsink and when you reinstall it, be sure you have full contact between the bottom of the heatsink and the top of the processor. And be sure to use a light coating of some kind of heatsink grease or the like.

Got a new and annoying problem.

For example, when I start he computer and the login screen pop up, there is a sound comming, alltho, I only hear about a second of it.

To move on, It's the same in everything that includes music, like videos, mp3 (in this case Winamp) games and streaming media.
The sound in every way starts after about a 2 seconds from that I press play.
I have never had these issues before.

Anyone got a suggestion?
And yes, I have all the latest drivers available, disabled the buildin soundcard etc.

My computer specification:

Intel Core i7 930
X58A-UD3R-Rev 2.0
Asus Xonar Essence STX
Samsung SSD 830 128GB

Thanks in advance!

A:Sound starts after a few seconds

Three things.
1. If you do not have the Integrated (on the motherboard) audio disabled, Disable it in the BIOS, not the Device Manager. If it wasn't disabled, try it after disabling it in the BIOS.

2. Uninstall the sound in the Device Manager, DO NOT check the box to uninstall the drivers. Then restart the PC and when Windows starts it will detect and reinstall the Sound. This fixes any Windows corruptions.

3. Reinstall the correct drivers (I assume the Asus Xonar).

I'm having a problem that I'm clueless about.
Today I found my pc frozen. It was running but I couldn't do anything. So I rebooted and it shut down.
When I turn it on, all the fans and HD start up and then it powers off.
I slowly removed all the components one by one and tested in between with no luck. Always powers down after about two seconds, even if it was mobo and cpu.
Interesting thing though is, that if I remove the cpu, the mobo is running fine, it doesn't shut down. But no beep or anything that would let me know that the cpu is missing. Strange.
I have replaced the power supply for new one and more powerfull, no change.
And I did all the tests with the mobo out of the box, on a paper surface.

It's a AMD athlon 64 2.2 AM2 on ASUS M2N AM2 mobo.

I would appreciate any suggestions!

I am setting up a new computer for my sister. I have an ASRock K7VT4A Pro board with an AMD Sempron 2800+. My problem is after it is all hooked up it will start (sometimes) and run for 2 seconds then quit. Sometimes it will make it long enough to post and other times not. I've replaced the metal spaces for the board with the plastic ones and I don't think there is a metal on metal short. I put the processor in my computer and it worked fine so I know that the processor is good also. There are spots to change jumpers depending on what FSB your processor is and I have those in the right spot. Has anyone had this problem before or could anyone shoot me some pointers to try?

I turned on my computer this morning and too my horror it shut down after about 2 seconds.

I have tried other ram and things, no difference, the hard drive is starting because it vibrates when you lift it, all the fans are starting up fine.

I tried taking out all the wires and re-seating them, and I have noticed something - you know the yellow and black came with the 4 pins that goes into the motherdrive, when I take that out the machine stays on but theres no graphics on screen, but when I plug it back in - it just shuts down again.

Anyone know what is going on? or how to fix this?

You mean the four pin plug that powers the CPU on the Motherboard?

Try having a check on the CPU fan, it may be faulty
To test it, you could unplug the CPU Fan, and try turning on the computer (do note that this will only be a few seconds test)

Other than that, I'd say Power Supply faulty

Well...the fingered file reflects no Google hits (other than yours) at all, which is not a good sign. You also have a STOP 24 error, which can indicate a problem with either the file, the NTFS file system, or the hard drive. But your STOP 24 error doesn't match up with any other such error that I have seen. In those cases, the typical file seeming suspect is ntfs.sys.For a person who seems to have infections frequently...I suggest being on the safe side and running your situation by our Malware Team. Hi guys,
I recently bought a new motherboard and new ram and a new CPU all compatible as far as I know. However the hard drive I am using is an old 300gb hard drive. It's transfer cable was a 1.5 gb/ps sata cable. However since the new motherboard only has a 3 gb and 6 gb sata cable, I plugged the 6 gb one into the hard drive. I also tested the 3 gb one and I got the following problem. It would start up and I could get into the bios, but when I want to start windows, it will say "starting windows" for a couple seconds, then restart the computer. Someone told me that if I put a clean version of windows on it that my problem should be fixed. Can anyone verify that please?

Here are my specs:
Asus p8z68 m-pro
Intel i7 3770k
Corsair vengeance 4x4gb ram
Maxtor 300gb hard drive
350 watt power supply

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

A:Windows starts for few seconds then restarts

If the hard drive you are installing . Still has the old Os on it from your other computer. Yes you should put a clean install of your os on it. Due to the fact it will have to many issue with the drivers it needs to run this motherboard. Plus you may want to use the 3gb sata cable. Due to it is the closet to your old one. Hope this helps. If not you may need to replace the hard drive with a newer one more up to date with your board.

So heres the situation.

I recently purchased a new case for my computer and was succesfully able to move all my computer parts from my old case to the new one. The computer started and worked perfect. I turned the computer off and left the room. The next day when i turned my comp on it started, but the monitor would remain blank and i couldnt get to the BIOS or anything. Shocked, i attempted to fix the problem by reseating the graphics card and RAM, only when i turned the computer on again it would only boot for about 2 seconds with the computer and fans whirring normally when suddenly it shut off. I still cant figure out how to fix the problem and am beggining to think my MB might not be working any more. my MB is an ASUS a7n8x-x.

Does anyone have a clue on how to fix this problem???
Any input would be greatly apreciated.

A:Help! Computer starts for 2 seconds then shuts off!

This going to sound real annoying to you.

But remove the motherboard again !
Check when removing that all posts and wires (bare) are not touching eachother
If possible (better to do this) "bench test"
ie nothing connected to back of motherboard except video (onboard preferably - if pos) and power, (and ram and cpu and heatsink/fan)
Short the power pins (screwdriver will do) and hopefully it turns on.
To turn off pull the power cord (or short the power pins for 3 secs)

If that worked, do one thing added at a time
Then re-install m/b and test again.

I have a computer and it is doing this - https://youtu.be/_Ah2phWTjao The LED light on the fan on the front will tell you how long the power stays on, the LED is supposed to all the time. This desktop Motherboard is not the one that came in the computer. rather it one from a computer I found on the side of the street, someone had no use for it any more and set it out there.  I took the motherboard from found computer and put in in my case.  I took the Hard drive from found computer and installed it in my case.  It was password protected, so I took it to local computer tech who removed the password and was now running windows 7 on a 64 bit, an upgrade from WinXP 32 Bit board I started with.  That worked fine for about 6 weeks or so, my new hard drive failed and PSU at the same time.  So I got a new PSU, and figuring to go cheap this time and instal linux, which I downloaded, then used Imgburn to make a DVD, but when I star it it does what you see in the video. Any ideas on what I can do to get this thing going again?

This will happen either with CD in player or with incoming sound from internet, essentially any use of sound through sound card (Sound BlasterAudigy) . Oh, and I also can have a system crash and restart. Blue screen doesn't stay up long enough for me to read anything it says before system proceeds to totally down. I read somewhere that internal modems (maybe especially lowend ones -- and my Sterling S20 may fit that description) can be subject to sound conflicts. Searching through resources, I find no conflicts cited and no place where resources seem to be shared by these two devices.

Are there answers for this -- or only more questions?

I tried every thing within my knowledge, removed the new programs I had downloaded that day, scanned for viruses, did system restore several times (in safe mode as nothing can be done the normal way any more.)
Tried sfc/scan which resulted the massage' windows resource protection did not find any integrity violations'.
Nothing seems to solve this problem.
I also get repeated explorer.exe Application error massages saying 'The instruction at 0x70f253fe referenced memory at 0x00820000 (different numbers appear here at different times). The memory could not be written. Click OK to terminate.'
Internet explorer works fine now except constant disturbances with windows error massages.
I would be really really grateful if someone could help me solve this.

For the past few days explorer.exe has been stopping and starting back up every few seconds. When XP starts up an application called LOL is running in the background and I kill it, but as soon as it dies SpyBot catches a whole bunch of registry adds, which I deny and blacklist. I've run checks with Spybot S&D as well as Adaware2007 and have only found something called Virtumonde that keeps coming back after I clean it off. AVG7 isn't finding anything out of the ordinary. I have searched lots of forums for help about this but none are the same so I decided I need technical help with this. I've downloaded HiJackThis and ran a scan with the following results:

On my old Sony laptop this problem never occurs, but after duel bootng OSX and Windows 7 on my MacBook I get this possible problem on every boot.

My MacBook starts as nromal, I select Windows 7 (OSX boots fine) and it just hangs on a blank screen for around 20 seconds with an underscore flashing the whole time before anything starts to happen (that bit where the Windows logo forms etc).

This makes the boot times around 1 minute or so, whereas on my old laptop they're only around 30 seconds.

This is Windows 7 Ultimate (64-bit). Everything is updated, using Bootcamp 3.0 drivers etc, working perfectly just like XP did.

I'm sure this question has been asked before, but I have tried searching, and can't seem to find anyone with this problem. Is this just apart of booting? Why doesn't this happen on my other PC?

Edit: Mis-typed title, meant to say 20 seconds.

A:Blank Screen for 30 Seconds before boot starts?

You can try looking in the system log files (from the log viewer under admin tools). Ususally if a driver or piece of hardware takes longer than expected to become active a warning it put in the log.

On the other end of the spectrum is the Windows Performance Toolkit which you can DL from here:
Windows Performance Analysis Developer Center

It is much more involved but it can possibly pinpoint a specific driver that is hanging for 30 seconds. That is assuming that the black screen is during the windows boot and is not bootcamp itself waiting for something bfore actually starting the windows boot...

Replaced motherboard had system working with conflicts. Now with power on cpu fan spins a half a turn then stops?? Its a pb 233 with 32 ram win 98. Does the power flow through the memory chips prior to powering the cpu??

A:cpu fan starts then stops!

Shouldn't happen. I'd first make sure it's securely plugged in, look for any frayed wiring to it, not a lot of debris building up around it, and then I'd be looking to replace it pronto!

Hi, Ive had my laptop (hp pavillion g6) for almost 5 years now and have never had a major issue. Recently, when using my laptop (just for tasks such as browsing the web and word processing) the fan whirs for a few seconds then stops for a few seconds, then whirs then stops constantly. It is becoming quite irritating! This happens both unplugged and plugged in and in various locations. I wondered if anyone had any ideas on why this may be and a way to either prevent it or see if the fan is broken? Thanks!

I just bought a new mobo, processor and ram for my PC, kept the PSU, DVD, Video card and HDD.

After replacing everything, I started it up and got the failure no bootable system found. Since I replaced so much, I thought it possible this could happen but I planned ahead to reinstall the OS anyway.

I put in the windows disk, installed windows, restarted and booted into windows. Put the mobo driver CD in, ran the multi-driver installer, installed all the drivers and restarted and got the no boot disk error again.

Went into BIOS, made sure HDD was detected and the primary boot device. Everything A-OK. Then I restarted and now it starts and within 3 seconds powers down. Holds about 5 seconds then tries to start again, but powers down after 3 seconds. It did this about 4-5 times before I shut it down.

Not really sure where to go from here. Originally I had 3 HDDs all hooked up, so I took all them off and only left the main OS and DVD drive, so everything but the core hardware is installed.

A:PC starts, stops, starts, stops, etc...

I've made some headway. After posting this, I took about an hour break and came back, hit the power button and booted right up. Did some more installs, restarted a few times, good to go.

Then I started hooking devices back up. I had 2 more HDD's, one SATA and one IDE. Sata worked fine, but then when i hooked up the IDE I get the boot failure error again. HDD boot order is correct, but still nothing. It's the only IDE component I have but never seems to work.

Also, after I started trying to hook it up I got the power on/off again. Sometimes it never starts, some times it powers up/down once or twice then boots on the subsiquent one. Seems to work fine when it's finally up though. I don't think it's a power issue since I can keep the IDE HD powered up, I just can't connect the cable, but it would seem to be.

The odd thing is aside from the fact that my old CPU was single core, and this ones dual core.. they're almost identical, he's links to the EXACT cpu's

Old CPU:

New CPU:

I really have no idea what the problem is, heres my specs
pentium 4, 3.2gig single core LGA 775
Asus p5rd1-v motherboard
GeForce 8600 GT 512mb
500 Watt Power supply
500 gig HD

But if you compare the specs to those two CPU's, the only difference really is the single core/dual core.. the watt's are even LOWER on the dual core.. so why wouldn't it work? I've even tried flashing my bios, which went bad.. but resetting the CMOS saved me, thankfully. IF someone could help it'd be amazing, thanks.

A:New CPU, Fan spins and stops in 2 seconds.

That board only supports Celeron and P4 processors, It cannot support Dual core processors, there are crucial voltage regulators missing on your motherboard. Bios upgrade cannot fix this, upgrade your motherboard also.

I have a particulary troublesome infection that I am at a loss for. I tried to run Malwarebytes but after downloading, installing, and updating, when I click on scan it starts but after 5 seconds it closes. Does the same thing with hijackthis, and superantispyware free edition. What is strange, is just for kicks I ran combofix, it updated, did the recovery console, went thru the scan completely, said it found a couple items but when I go back to run Malwarebytes, it still only runs for 5 seconds. All other malware remover free products I have tried render the same results such as RootRepeal, a couple of online scans, Spybot Search and Destroy etc. After running if I try to run again it says windows cannot access the specified path you may not have the appropriate permissions.

I've had this problem occur once before, but it fixed itself after I removed the power cable and reinserted.

My computer will start up, I hear the hard drive start to spin, all internal fans start up, then the computer turns itself off after anywhere between 3-10 seconds, then turns itself back on after ~3 seconds again and repeats the cycle.

I don't think it's a faulty PSU, as I have a TV tuner card with a LED which stays on at all times. I think it may be a problem with the graphics card, as before this problem began occurring, the computer crashed twice while on a resource-heavy game, then BSOD'd with a memory error.

I've tried starting with the hard drive unplugged, and nothing happened differently (minus the lack of the drive indicator light). I can't remove the graphics card at the moment, but I'll try ASAP. I've also tried removing my TV tuner card, but that also made no difference.

The only modification I've made to my motherboard is to flash it with a more updated BIOS, however that was several months ago and no problems occurred then.

What type of PSU you got? That 8600 is pretty low powered and should only take about bout 350/400w min. Also, is your grfx card the 512mb version or the 1gb version? Also, the crashing during resource heavy games may be due to the 2gb of RAM. Most resource heavy games these days require at the very least 4gb of RAM, as they are >resource heavy< games.

Hello all,

I tried to install office 2003 professioanl onto a notebook that had a 60 day trial of office on it. Now Outlook 2003 professioanl starts, then disappears and stops after a few seconds.

The event viewer tells me that "
"the MOF file created for Outlook service could not be loaded. The error code returned by the MOF compiler is contained in the record data. Before the performace counters of this service can be collected by WMI the MOF file will need to be loaded manually. Contact the vendor..."
I have tried multiple install/removal.repairs with no sucess. Deleted the pst files, etc. I'm stuck. Has anyone been here?

Thanx in advance

Ok, I have been looking all over and been at it now over 6 hours so I am pretty ticked off right now. Just got a new desktop today with Windows 7 and a WRT610N Router along with a WUSB600N V2 dongle as the tower had no room in it for my PCI card. Anyways, after figuring out the CD rom that came with the dongle was nothing but fail, I found the latest driver on the linksys site, that got me futher, all the way to the same problem I am having with the ralink driver. I pick up the networks and what not, when I go to connect however the green slider makes it just to the end and stops moving, and nothing happens no matter how long you wait patiently.

I am never prompted for a pass. I tried turning off that secure thing on the linksys router, it made no difference, I am frustrated and out of ideas, any suggestions? I called linksys support and the douche on the other end of the line insisted on getting me the drivers again, and put me on hold for 10 minutes when I finally hung up.

A:Starts to connect and stops....

Get the best driver. Try different ones if you need to.

Set the router to 100% transmit power, beacon interval=500ms and change the wireless channel its radio broadcasts on.
