Black flashing screen/ Total white screen

Q: Black flashing screen/ Total white screen

Hi, I've been having this problem. When I start my computer, the whole screen is white for awhile, then it turns black. There is no windows startup logo or my computer brand logo. Then my screen starts flashing and the power button on my monitor blinks and the monitor makes TOK sounds every 2 seconds and then the screen flashes and starts doing that over and over until it decides to make the whole screen white and stay like that. Here's what it looks like:

I tried manually restarting my computer by holding the power button and after a few tries, sometimes, if I'm lucky, it will let me login and then everything is fine.

Today, I went through this process and today I tried turning off the monitor when the screen was white. It restarted and black flashing but made the screen turn white faster. I just kept trying, turning the monitor off and on again because I didn't know what to do. Then I was so lucky, the login page for windows came up and I was able to login; now everything is normal. I can go online and everything without any problems until I shut down my computer and start it up again. Then it's back to square one.

Can anyone help me fix this problem? Should I buy a new monitor? I've had this one for a few years, but my desktop is new; It's one year old in 3 days. (April. 4)

Thanks in advance!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I'm sorry for the lack of any technical terms used to describe this but I'm a complete novice with computers.

I was watching a video when some warning messages popped up saying something like harmful stuffs trying to access your computer, then it restarted. Now it starts up, goes to the motherboard thing, goes past that then hits a black screen with a little white line flashing in the top left corner.

I've tried to use F8 to enter the safe mode start up but when I press F8 it comes up with

'PLEASE SELECT BOOT DEVICE

SATA:3M-STM3250318AS
CDROM:3S-TSSTcorp CDDVDW SH-S22'

I tried the SATA option twice, first time the white line vanished so it was just a black screen and then it restarted. Second time it just went back to the screen with the white flashing line.

Any help in sorting this out would be greatly appreciated.

Today I started up my pc and after the BIOS screen (the place where you can press f8-f11 for various options) it went to a black screen with a blinking underscore in the upper left corner and stayed there indefinitely. It did this even after reboot.

I tried using the diagnostic tool and everything it tested passed (including HDD). I did this test twice and the same results were produced.

I also googled for similar problems (one topic mentioned that the op disassembling his computer and physically tapping a chip on the motherboard caused it to work) but I have no experience with taking apart my computer and i do not want to break it accidentally. I did however chance upon a topic advising him to do a CMOS reset which apparently helped that op, so i looked through the various options on the BIOS page. There was one option (f10 I think) mentioning CMOS on its fourth sub-window, so i pressed the reset option but I'm not entirely sure if I used the right function.

I uninstalled kaspersky pure and replaced kaspersky pure for kaspersky anti-virus yesterday, dont know if this was the cause.

I am using windows 7 64 bit. However, I am also not able to tell whether it is Windows 7 Home Premium, Pro or Ultimate because I have no idea how to access to the start menu or the run dialog from what amounts to basically only the BIOS screen. As such I cannot tell which is the proper windows 7 SP1 ISO that I should be using. Can anyone help?

Hey I just went through something very similar. I found that my SATA cable connecting the hard drive to the motherboard had failed. I replaced it with a new SATA cable, and it booted right up. Try the cable first if you have one lying around, plus its a cheap solution. If you replace the cable and it still won't boot up, it might be your hard drive. Seeing as how your machine is that old, it could fail at any time.

Do you get anything on the screen when you turn it on?

Hey everyone I should let you know that I am not entirely sure this is a hardware issue but I'll ask here. Since I got my desktop made I keep getting a grey and black flashing screen after the windows loads to my login screen. I have gotten a replacement gpu as I expected this as the issue. I have tried multiple full factory resets, different monitors and cords to see if that was the issue but nothing works. I have uninstalled my gpu, monitor, and CPU, updated everything too(sorry this is so long). The only solution I have found is putting it to sleep and waking it up temporarily fixes it. The problem only occurs after i shut my computer down and and start it up for the first time. I have had this problem for over a year and i am desperate for any help would be greatly appreciated thank you.

Hi fellas,

I have a Dell Dimension 8400 which stopped working three years ago. It was running Windows XP with SP 2 or 3 - I can't remember for sure. It has 2GB RAM and a 256MB ATI Radeon graphics card.

Whenever I boot up it goes straight to a black screen with a flashing cursor on the top left. There is no Dell splash screen and no option to access the BIOS by tapping F8. This Dell has four indicator lights on the back to let a user know if there is a problem. The first three lights are green and the fourth one in orange. I looked this up on the manual and it says refer to technical support.

So far I have tried the following:
Removed optical drives to see if the machine would boot up without them - it didn't. I am not confident enough to start taking parts off the motherboard just yet.
Booted up without any additional peripherals attached including mouse and keyboard
Tried booting up from an old Windows XP install disc - that had no effect either

So I am pretty much stumped as to what to do with this machine. Doing a Google search, others with the same problem have been unable to fix it. I just want to know if it is worth the time to revive this machine, or to let go. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Hi I have a lenovo g500 laptop running windows 10. It has recently started giving me a white flashing screen with bits of grey and vertical lines. It stays on and does not flicker.
I have to turn off the laptop to get the screen back to normal. Moving the screen back and forth doesn't influence it in anyway and all display drivers are up to date.
I have ran a hardware scan (with the lenovo solution center) on the graphics chip and it passed.
The graphics chip is an intel hd 4000.
What could be causing such an issue?

Welcome elfinwood.

Just to clarify... It sounds as if you have been playing Second Life with your computer for a while, which has always worked fine, until recently, where you have this flashing screen problem? When does this problem occur? Is it after playing the game for a while or as soon as you start the game? Or does it start as soon as your turn on the computer?

If it is when you start the game, does it do it when you start other games (games that require good use of the graphics card/system)?

> When was the last time you updated your drivers?
> Have you changed anything before this started to occur, such as installing new updates?

1: When the screen shows a dark picture, then when I immediately switch back to a mostly white picture, it's far duller, and gradually (over the course of about 10 seconds), the white screen lightens more and more. I presume this is a battery saving feature. Can I disable it somehow? 2: Fan issues. Although the fan is quiet, I'd rather it be quieter still (or even silent). From previous experience, I know Lenovo tends to (heavily) err on the side of caution, but I'd rather be able to control the fan speeds more directly. Can I somehow half the fan speed or by some other arbitray amount? I'll keep an eye on temperatures, and I know all the risks.

This is what happens when I turn my computer on:

1. blank blue screen with program error message: "explorer.exe has generated errors and will be closed by windows....".
2. if i click "ok" the message goes away and i am left with a blank blue screen and i have to reboot the computer
3. if i don't click ok windows starts to load up an looks normal at first but then another error message pops up (the same one) and the screen turns black and says some junk like "Warning! You're in danger!" and then some junk about spyware.
4. then a few seconds later another error message pops up and the screen turns white and says "Active Desktop Recovery. Microsoft Windows has experienced and unexpected error..." It gives me an option to "click here to restore" but nothing happens when i do click it.
5. and then another error message pops up and the screen goes black again, then another message and it goes white and so on.

I can't really open any programs properly because another error message will pop up and shut down the start menu before i get a chance to open anything.

Yes, you've got a few malware entries in there (a CoolWebSearch hijack, and a couple of trojans), though it's not going to be easy to remedy without seeing the complete HJT log. Can you possibly copy the log to floppy and then post it from the other computer?

What's the Windows OS?
eg. Is it Windows 2000 sp4? Or is it WinXP Pro sp2?

What version of HijackThis is it? v1.99.1 is the latest version.
Is HijackThis.exe running from a permanent folder, and not from within a zip file in a Temp folder?
This is important. Make sure HijackThis.exe is installed in eg.
C:\Program Files\HijackThis
Re: your questions at the end of your post:
Don't worry about WINNT / winnt and System32 / system32
They are both exactly the same (whether smallcase or uppercase or a mixture).
svchost.exe is legitimate and is an integral part of Windows NT/2k/XP (Services Host).
It is normal to have multiple instances of it running.

Hi there, I hope everyone is well.

I have a strange issue that started happening recently. System restore doesn't help as it happens with multiple machines.

I have a lobby display running from TV via HDMI to EXTRON to Ethernet and back again to the computer in the server room. I have had this setup for a little over a year now working just fine. We recently got a new computer (We lease) for the lobby display and after setting it up, I only see a black screen with a white cursor. I have troubleshot this a little too much that I am now not sure if it's a windows update, video card update, or possible the EXTRON. However, when hooking up a laptop it works just fine as it should.

Please note that I can see post boot and the CTRL ALT DELETE screen just fine, but once logged in I just see cursor. If someone moves cursor I can see it from the lobby display. If I uninstall the video card driver I see everything perfectly fine but when running presentation it's not focused for obvious reasons, so I can't leave it like that.

I have used a Desktop with AMD and latest drivers as well as down graded drivers, issue still is present. I use an older nvidia card FX570, same deal with drivers, still the issue is present. I use a new computer with a new nvidia card, and it works. but unfortunately we do not have any of those available and that's a really expensive machine.

here is where it gets even more strange;
If I hook the computer up directly to the TV and not behind the extron devi... Read more

I have a brand new HP Pavilion with a touch screen. Out of the box I noticed there was a white speck on the screen which I couldn't wipe off. When I turned the screen on the speck appears to be black. The speck returns to white when the screen is on, but displaying something dark. This seems to me to be strange behavior for a dead pixel, but I don't know anything about the new touch screens.  I found a 'dead pixel test' online, and against red and green backgrounds the speck appeared black, while the test would indicate that it should appear white were it so.  I think that the speck seems to be 'above' the rest of the screen slightly. Does anyone know what this is?

Hi,

Due to a power cut earlier my PC naturally shut off the way you would if you switched it off at the plug.

It brought me into the windows error recovery screen and loaded until I reached the login screen.
Upon saying "Please wait" my screen begun to flash black rapidly and wouldn't load. The monitor wasn't going off or anything, the screen was just blinking.

It still does this every time I reboot my computer, so I can't log in at all.
It also does this in all safe modes so that is out of the question too.

Anyone know how to fix this?
Thanks!

Then after probably another 5 or 10, It will just completely lock up my computer then bring me to the blue screen. Im pretty sure the problem is that these new operating systems are clashing with my drivers, All drivers are up to date, Hardrive checked, Video card working fine, RAM is all good.

Not sure how else to describe it. I started up my computer this morning and when it loaded the login screen it started rapidly flickering in white with very small pink pixels visible all over the screen. The login screen was not visible at all, the screen just turned white. I could see my mouse pointer and I could move it around, so the computer didn't freeze or anything. I then performed a hard reboot and now everything is back to normal. Never seen anything like this before, and I'm running on a clean install of Windows 10 Home x64. This is not a problem with my monitor as I reconnected all cables during this. My computer itself is pretty much new, less than a year old.

Hello,

So on my computer, something strange happens when I uninstall UxStyle. It has broken my Windows install once and it has done it again. The first time, I kept on doing system restores to see what was the problem that made that black screen. After trial and error, I narrowed it down to UxStyle. So, I deleted Windows 8 and installed Windows 7, which is what I wanted in the first place. Now, I decided to triple-boot Windows 7 with Vista and 8.1, and it has succeeded. I reinstalled UxStyle thinking it was just a problem with my old Windows install, and then uninstalled it after a few days since I felt like the regular look was better. I rebooted Windows and the same effect happened.

So, I would like to know if I can get and replace those three patched DLLs with unpatched DLLs for Windows 8.1. Could I just change the broken ones to have .old next to them and then place the ones I get here there? Also, would sfc /scannow work?

A:UxStyle Black Flashing Post-Windows Update Black Screen

Hello lct01a, and welcome to Eight Forums.

A sfc /scannow will attempt to repair any modified or corrupted system files, so that would be a good first step.

This recently started happening. Sometimes when I boot my computer, it displays a white screen with colorful pixels scattered across the screen. It starts by constantly flashing from the white screen to black. Eventually, it stops at the white screen. I can still see my mouse pointer though and move it around. It's happened three times now and it only happens every few boots. I have to hit the reset button on my case to get out of it. Any idea? Thanks.

Here's a picture of the white screen: http://i.imgur.com/mPLw38I.jpg

OS: Windows 10
MOTHERBOARD: Gigabyte 970A-DS3P
CPU: AMD FX 8320
GPU: EVGA GTX 970 FTW

I have also attached the event error log.

EDIT: I think the problem has to do with the constant spamming of this in the logs:
"Display driver nvlddmkm stopped responding and has successfully recovered."

So GPU drivers or GPU failure? :\

By the way, this only happens on SOME OS BOOTS. Games/video run fine without crashing if the OS boots up properly.

Hi sherm12789 and welcome to TSF

Start up your computer by either tapping the F1, F2, F4, F6, F8, F10, F11, F12, or Delete keys to access the systems BIOS. For the exact information on what key to start up the System BIOS refer back to Original Manufacturer System Documentation.

After getting into the BIOS, look for a page that would have something like, eg. PC Health Screen or System Monitoring Page. When you have found a page similar to this post back what the BIOS says for your temperatures, voltages, and fan speeds.

I have a Dell Inspiron with Windows 2000 and it has been on the brink for a while. Two nights ago it told me I needed to run a Windows Update. I have never done that before but I clicked ok. Then when I tried to restart the computer - blue screen - memory available is less than memory installed - something like that. Tried to restart to last known working configuration - did not work. Tried to restart in safe mode - screen ran a list of code lines and then went back to the same blue screen memory message. Then I ran a diagnostic and there was a DST short test failure. While I was looking up DST failure I turned to look at my computer, with the diagnostic still running, and all of a sudden the screen was totally white, then green, then red (not in that exact order). I screamed and turned off the computer. Can anyone help me turn it on for at least long enough to back up some files that have been created since my last back up??? Thanks.

Google for and download Hirens BootCD which includes a number of tools and a stripped down version of XP called MiniXP. That should enable you to pull your files out and prepare the hard disk for a fresh installation - if you have an XP CD.

Bit of a long story but here I go.

I have 2 Radeon 6950 with the crossfire thing set up, it's been working well for over 2 years.

Over the last few weeks I've been having issues, mostly while watching videos (usually HD and/or full screen). The video will freeze, the audio will loop, then eventually the screen goes black and I get an error message saying "Display driver has stopped working and has recovered".
Sometimes it didn't recover and I have to turn the computer off.

What's now happening is it will freeze at the windows start up. Then after resetting I will get to windows in very very low resolution and in black and white.

So I 're-seated' the cards. I couldn't notice any obvious damage to it except the fans were very dusty so I cleaned them.
Boot it up and I still get the black and white.
I checked the device manager and it said one of the cards was having problems, I uninstalled both drivers from that menu (not quite sure if I should have done this) and for whatever reason it's now working.

However it now seems one of my cards is not being recognised. Only one display adapter is shown in the device manager and AMD catalyst only recognises one card too.

What's the best course of action to determine what's wrong with what card (still not quite sure which one it is).

I updated my laptop today and my screen started flashing black whenever I'm on an internet browser. I've used Chrome and Opera. My internet browsers are up to date as well.  I've tried restarting it, shutting it down then turning it back on after a few minutes, and updating my drivers then restarting it. It still flashes black for a few seconds. It's not happening as frequently since i've updated my drivers but I am unable to buy a new warranty and I don't know the cost of a cal with HP.  I'm using wifi. I have an HP Pavilion.  I couldn't find any specific question like mine that was recent so I thought I'd try asking myself.

Hi everyone,
After leaving my pc on for an extended amount of time I notice my monitor flashing black. You can hear the monitor click, and then the image comes back a second later. These are some observations I made:

-When the flashing occurs, my cpu load shoots from idle to about 70-80%

-Activity seems to stop just before the flash, I know this because my cursor doesn?t highlight items just before the flash and the cursor becomes a little sluggish.

-When I quickly play though my songlist in winamp (repeatedly press next) this encourages flashing.

-The flashing is unpredictable I can have the machine run for a week fine then it happens all of a sudden. I reboot its still there. I reboot a little later an it?s gone...

-The temps inside my case are all normal and I don't believe anything is overheating.

-I also run ubuntu on the same machine and none of these problems are apparent.

-This started happening after I cleaned out my pc and upgraded the RAM with 512x2 of OCZ. I tried without and the flashing hasn't happened yet. Although, this rarely ever happens anyway. Is there a way of checking what?s causing the problem?

Behavior:

Boot is fine, once OS loads and Login screen is displayed Screen flashes to black at ~1hz. Each flash resets mouse position to center-screen. This is an intermittent problem, seemed to be fixed then reoccurs, have run Avast boot and full scans, spybot search and destroy, and comodo premium scans, does not seem to be viral (although i have heard similar reports of these symptoms from other members of OMGPOP.com). Have no symptoms if running in safe-mode. Often symptoms dissipate after if spy-bot fixes all problems found while in safe-mode. I have not recently added any programs to my recollection, nor has there been any major updates that I can recall.

Current action:
checking history of all recent program updates, and or any seemingly unusual reports in system logs.

I have recently run into a problem with certain games giving me a black flickering screen. The game is playable but it keeps flickering black every few seconds. It doesnt happen on all my games. I have an NVIDA Gforce 32MB card and 256mb RAM. I have Directx 8.1 installed (i've heard 9.0 has issues) The games that this is happening to are not graphically intense. For example it happens on Grand Theft Auto 1 and the game also runs slow. Also happens on Shogun:total war. But I can play games like return to castle wolfenstien without a problem. It doesnt appear to be an issue with the monitor b/c I can connect remotely and have the same problem. Any suggestions on how I can resolve this problem?

Thanx

Ok,
Well then I can reccommend a few things.
Check all your video card settings. Use guide here for help http://www.techspot.com/guides-hardware.shtml
Use a program such as NVMax to setup your video cards setting properly. Its a simple little program that allows you to change many settings easily. The tweak guide I mentioned explains what all the options do.
Theres always the chance its a problem with another program. It could be caused by a conflict with another program running. Go here for a useful program to copy a log of your StartUp: http://www.tomcoyote.org/hjt/
Posting that log here might prove useful.
Also, you mentioned RtCW runs fine, your probably using OpenGL for it. Maybe OpenGL is running fine, but Direct3d isn't.
Go to RUN and type 'dxdiag' to bring up DirectX. Run the test and see if all is well.

I'll start by saying Hi to everyone. I'm new here but I'm in urgent need of help.

I recently purchased a brand new gaming system which I have built and had running (yesterday). I have it hooked up to my Samsung 23' TV as a monitor through HDMI cable. Yesterday everything was running fine, I managed to get Windows 7 professional installed and running and began downloading anti-virus software. Now, up to this point the computer had been running for a good hour with no problems. Got windows installed fine and everything was running great. It even rebooted a few times to install new Windows updates and a few drivers.

After 10-15 minutes of configuring the computer (downloading new browser, anti-virus etc.) I noticed the screen began doing some strange things. First a few black lines would appear, and then random patterned squares of colour began appearing which was followed by a screen lock up and then a computer restart. At this point I assumed it was graphical drivers (I'll post my system specs farther down) so I booted up again (no problems) and logged onto windows. I went on the ATI website and began downloading the latest drivers (I actually had a CD which I had forgotten about) however halfway through the download the computer repeated the previous failure and shut down.

This time, after leaving it a few minutes, i booted it up and I got nothing. No 'energy saving' screen at the start, no boot screen: nothing. However, I do know my screen can sense something as t... Read more

Machines were running fine until someone took out a power pole down the road.
When power resumed, powered my machines back up. 2 out of 3 did OK. The third goes immediately to a black screen with a flashing cursor in the upper corner.
Have already:
1 removed and reseated the power and data cables from the hard drive
2 removed and reseated the RAM modules
3 tried pressing every F key on the keyboard
4 Cntl-Alt-Delete doesn't work either
5 tried on another monitor.
Don't even get to Windows splash screen or able to get to Safe Mode.

For the past few days my computer goes crazy at random times each day. I've searched everywhere for other problems similar to mines with no success. I downloaded malwarebytes, scanned with zero threats found and the same with norton.  I recorded it as it was happening so you could get a better understanding of what was going on. I thought it was a remote viewer but it happens when the internet is diconnected also.

Hi Leminhh! Insert your Windows 7 Disk and see if you get an option to boot from CD/DVD. If not go into BIOS (F12 at Acer screen) and look for Boot Order and put Optical Drive or CD Drive first. Then SAVE and reboot.

When you can boot into the Windows 7 DVD, follow these instructions to do a Startup Repair. Startup Repair

If it doesn't work first time, try it three times. If it still doesn't work, please post back with what happens.

A:Black Screen, Flashing Cursor 2

@ AndrewSeExactly what is the name (the extension) of the file that you are trying to attach here?A file with a .zip extension can be attached here in the XP forum, so it should not be a problem, and you should not be receiving the "Error You aren't permitted to upload this kind of file" message when attempting to do that.

I encountered this problem two days ago while using my computer (hp pavilion elite) and it sht off on it's own. I tried to restart and it won't boot windows. Just a black screen with a flashing cursor at the top. I searched all over these forums and haven't found a solution that works. So far I have done a restore point, tried to reinstall windows from a recovery disk, I've used command prompt to Fix the boot record. Diagnostics says my hard drive is fine and I can see the newly installed windows 7 on my hard drive via the recovery disk boot. But when I try to boot from hard drive it still goes black. I don't know what I'm doing wrong. Or if there is any fix possible. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
