Right click on file windows explorer freezes

Q: Right click on file windows explorer freezes

When I right click on a file in Windows Explorer (Vista Ultimate) the hour glass appears and after a while the Explorer window turns grayish. If I minimize it I can continue to work, even activate another Windows Explorer window. But if I attempt to close the grayed window the screen turns blue (Not the "window of death", and there are no error messages) and my desk top is lost. I can three finger salute, raising the task manager which tells me nothing is running, and I have to restart or shut down!

I have a Toshiba Satellite A205, running VIsta Ultimate, 4 GB ram, etc., etc.

I tried to do a search on this Forum but had trouble and could do nothing, so I write this note.

Thanks for any help.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello Pete Diebenow

I think this might be caused by a bad context menu handler. A context menu handler is a shell extension handler that adds commands to an existing context menu (Example: cut, copy, paste, print, Scan with Norton etc).

Download ShellExView and run it.

It will scan the registry for all the shell extensions. Once the scan is over and the list is displayed, you need to spot the context menu handlers. Sort the results using "Type", so that the context menu handlers are displayed together.

General rule here is to disable non-Microsoft context menu handlers *one-by-one* and verify if the problem is solved. If disabling one does not solve the problem, undo the disabled item and disable the next non-Microsoft handler. Do the same until the problem is solved and finally identify the culprit. Scroll right to see the Company Name column in ShellExView.

You can disable them ...they say "one at a time" and see what effect it has on the problem. You can do it a lot quicker by bisecting the list, disabling half of the entries in one fell swoop, rebooting and trying the right click. You just have to narrow it down. Then keep bisecting the list until it is just a few and do these one at a time. The problem is that you have to reboot between tries to get accurate testing of the results of your disabling.

The latest version of ShellExView marks all the non-Microsoft extensions in Pink for easy identification. All other types of shell extensions that ShellExView utility cannot recognize are categorized as "System" type.

Hi, a day or two ago I've had a problem where if I right click on a file or folder (any type) the wheel will turn up but won't load. Usually it will cause the explorer to crash. I am still able to view the video or music file at this time but right clicking will not work. At first i thought this was caused by iTunes as that won't open up either. However, upon restarting it will work just fine. I am able to right click and also open iTunes. I have figured out this may be caused after I wake my computer up from sleeping or hibernating. I have tested this out multiple times and it happens all the time. When i try to log out or shut down (or simply restart also) the wheel keeps spinning while saying Shutting down. I'm not sure if this has anything to do with it but I just wanted to include it as this is started to happen at the same time. I'm not really certain whats causing this after waking my computer up. I hope I explained this clearly but if I haven't please let me know. I'm on a 64 bit, Windows 7 computer.

When I left click or right click on an MP4 file, Windows Explorer encounters a problem and needs to close.
Explorer closes and restarts. If the MP4 was left clicked, Real Player will start and play the file. If the MP4 was right clicked, right click menu will open and error window will open immediately after.

The error report shows:
Error signature
AppName: explorer.exe AppVer: 6.0.2900.5512 ModName: quicktime.qts
ModVer: 5.0.2.15 Offset: 002d12b5

This problem started today, after I tried to copy a folder containing MP4 files while viewing one of the MP4 files in the folder. Yeah, I know....I remain my own worst enemy.

Thanks

I'm using Windows 8.1 and whenever I right click to get the open with/new/extract/etc context menu, explorer (not my computer) would freeze for anywhere between 5-15 seconds, the cursor would become the spinning loading icon and at the top it would say "windows explorer (not responding)". Explorer does not crash. The problem would temporarily go away if after freezing, I right click again within a few minutes, i.e. the next time I right click, it would load the context menu immediately. But after a few hours, the problem would come back again. Restarting computer does the same thing, fixes the problem but comes back in a few hours.

Anyone know what might be causing this? My computer seems to generally slow down after running for a while, eg takes 2-3 seconds for start menu to appear (I installed start menu as an add-on since 8.1 doesn't have it), takes a few seconds to get any menu from task bar to appear, etc.

A:Windows Explorer freezes for a few seconds on right click

Do you have a laptop?

Sounds to me like aggressive power saving management on the hard drive.
Next time you click and it freezes, do you hear your hard disk switch on and begin spinning?

Check your advanced power settings in control panel. Check what amount of time you've set your hard disk to shut off after. If it is set to something lower than about 5 minutes, you should increase it to 10 or 15. While this uses little bit more power, it makes using the computer a lot nicer, and also saves your hard disk from wearing out early.

I had a disk fail completely after a few thousand spinups. Same model disk with only about 200 spinups but over 8 years powered on hours still works like a champ.

Hi

I have recently installed SP2 on XP and installed plenty of new spyware progs and AVG anti-virus.

Since installing the service pack I have been unable to right-click on any file in Windows explorer , the window freezes and just disappears.
I usually get a DrWatson debugger window after this happens, I have read up about this and cant get a fix. My scans come back with nothing.
I have removed any s/w I wasnt using
I ran registry cleanup programs

There is one thing I am unable to remove from add/remove programs OR delete from file system and that is a folder called ebates_moemoney_maker. I tried removing it from cmd window but I didnt have the permissions. In add/remove programs window it does not show any properties like size etc and when I click on remove it does nothing. The spyware programs pick it up but never delete it . I am unsure whether this has anything to do with my problem with Windows explorer but would like to get it sorted

Here is my Hijack this scan - can anyone spot anything , any help MUCH appreciated !

Thanks

Windows Explorer as well as other desktop programs failed to respond to a right click from any interface. I was also having printer errors that involved total failure to print. At first, I thought I needed to uninstall all my Epson software and printer, but that resulted in no change. I searched on line and the only idea that made sense to me was the suggestion that this was likely a Context Menu Handler problem. It suggested downloading a Shell File Extensions View (ShellExView - Shell Extension Manager For Windows) from NirSoft version 1.8.6.0 which was free. The first download I did not use out of fear so I accessed the Context Menu area via regedit, but saw no way to disable any suspected third party Context Menu Handlers. So, in the end, I swallowed hard and ran the NirSoft application. I was able to see all the shell items in the registry, and sorted them by age, the most recent was a Context Menu Handler from Norton Internet Security occurring during the most recent update. The manager software allowed me to disable just that one handler, and after a restart, File Explorer and everything else behaved normally. So, now I am posting this so it only takes you less than an hour to address this issue, where I spent 4-5 hours on it. I reinstalled the Norton Internet Security and all is still well.

A:Windows 8.1 File Explorer Fails To Open With Right Click

Hello, jimbang22. Welcome to Windows EightForums. Thanks for posting that. That will be a great timesaver for some.

So much for 3rd party software to goof up a system, especially an AV product. No real need to use it on a home computer with 8/8.1 with included Defender. Enterprise systems are a different story.

Got lucky early on in computing with good advice from an IT friend of mine. He told me to watch out for 3rd party maintenance and AV products for most are crap. Through the years watching I can see how true that is.

Again, thanks and welcome.

I am having this problem recently and I am not sure of the solution.
To solve the problem on the fly one has to start task manager, stop the explorer.exe process, start a new task, type in command.com enter explorer.exe into the Dos window and press enter.
This enables one to carry on using the computer.

Ways to prevent:

I have been told and have found what seems to be the solution:
Type run in the search programs and files(bottom right) click run, enter MSCONFIG, go to startup tab and disable programs that may be causing the problem.
I am not sure I have found the problem program causing this yet but I have disabled a couple of startup programs and the right click freeze seems to be happening less now??
Any comments.

Some time yesterday my PC began acting strangely. Every time I open Explorer, I see "Working on it..." and have to wait several seconds before I can do anything. In addition, any changes to the file structure (deleting files, copying, moving, etc.) cause another freeze. This occurs on all drives, SSD or HDD.

Burn to, and boot from CD, then run on a single stick of RAM at a time. It will take some time to test, run at least 8 passes per stick of RAM.

Also have you ran SFC /scannow on the computer, if not give that a try also.

Yep, since 3 months ago, any time I right click on a file, anywhere, she freezes. I think i recall installing some little program that allowed me to send a file that i right clicked on to any other place on my computer, but of course cannot remember for sure.
Any suggestions for fixing this?
Thanks.

So my fiance is not very tech savvy and is incredibly impatient. She torrents films (which I'm aware is already a red-flag)
and today a file she dowloaded to her HP2000 with Windows 7 Ultimate  has been giving her trouble. When attempting to play said file the window goes white or translucent and the blue loading wheel hangs forerver. When attempting to delete, right click or trash the folder of said file the same thing happens. I have attempted to get rid of this in Safe Mode and have even put Avast and Malware Bytes on there, running full scans but to no avail. The laptop already had a slow CPU

I'm aware that there's a warning label attached to torrenting but if I could get any advice, it would save me alot of sleep and keep my fiance from yelling at me anymore.

Hi to all, i have a laptop running Windows 7 Professional. The problem is strange and havent had it on any other Windows 7 machine.

If i click the folder icon on the bottom tool bar (windows explorer) then in the left hand pane expand the C drive then right click on any folder it instantly displays a dialog saying Explorer has experienced a problem and needs to close, windows is
looking for a fix for this problem (cant remember exact wording) then Explorer.exe restarts. This happens on the local C drive and Network drives.
I though it could be a permissions problem so have taken ownership of all files & folders on the C drive which made no difference, i have removed the laptop from our server / domain and it is still the same / no change.
Can anyone shed any light on this problem or offer any ideas on fixing it? the laptop is only a few months old and is i5 / 4GB RAM Dell machine running Windows 7 Pro SP1 office 2003 Pro, checked for virus & adware & all clean.

A:Explorer.exe crashes when righ click on item in left pane on windows explorer nothing in system logs, explorer.exe restarts.

The faulting module (Fault Module Name: SHELL32.dll) shell32.dll is a Windows system file however the file that is actually causing the crash may be a third party file which from the symptoms
may be a third party context menu handler.
The following link has some info and a download to ShellExView which you can use to selectively disable third party context menu handlers to find out a problematic one:
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/slowrightclick.htm
You could try disabling all non-Microsoft context menu handlers and then, if the problem resolves, re-enable them one at a time to see which one was the problem.
BTW, the error should be logged in the Event Viewer Application log as a Application Error involving explorer.exe

I find myself creating batch files on a regular basis. At the moment I have to Right Click, New, Text Document, rename...

It takes so long!

So I was wondering if there was any way to add a file type to that menu you get when right-clicking->new.

In case you don't understand what I mean (can't blame you), you know when you right click on Windows Explorer background, then click "New", then you are presented a list of file types (Word Document, Excel Document, etc), and you can select one? I want to be able to add "Batch file" to that list. I know it is possible as I've seen programs do it, for example, when you install Microsoft Office the file types appear there.

Also, as a secondary question, is there any way to remove file types from the list? I uninstalled a program and it left it's shortcuts there.. .

Thanks in advance!

A:How do I add file types to "Right-Click->New->" in Windows Explorer

Hello Hnefatl, and welcome to Seven Forums.

The tutorial below can help show you how to add New -> BAT File to the context menu. New Batch File - Add to Context Menu
Could you post a screenshot of the list that still has the file types in it to help ID where and what this may be? In the mean time, you might see if this may be what you after to unassociated the file extension.File Extension Type - Unassociate
Hope this helps,

This is the first issue i have had with windows 10 ever since installing it in august. Ever since yesterday whenever i click on a file in the file explorer window it will gray out and stop working. Unlike the average hang this one will stay grayed out for about 5 to 10 seconds, my screen will go black for about half a second and than everything will be back to normal. I am thinking that this could be a virus but i have run a scan 2 times and nothing showed up. Other than the file explorer not working everything is fine. This is really weird since it only started yesterday and i have never had any issues like this in the 4 years that i have had my computer.

Did you install any new program recently ? Some third party programs might have installed incompatible Shell Extension that would cause Explorer to hang, crash etc...

Hello,

i have not found any solution for this even though there seem to be several similar postings before, so here goes. All this happens on Win2k before and after installing SP4.

Whenever i open an explorer and right click on a file, it will terminate all open explorers as well as take down my launch bar (which will subsequently be rebuilt though). What i want to do is to delete a file, and it does not work with pressing delete either (same effect). But, as i said, the whole conext menu wont open. I am not really aware of newly installed programs, could be wrong on that one though. Couldnt find where to manipulate registry. Any input on this one very welcome.

Btw, i can right click on folders. Just not on files. wierd, isnt it? 8^)

A:Right click a file = explorer crash

Any system restore points before this happened ? Revert changes made from utility program, could be due to a shell extension software puts in your context menu when you right click. CCleaner can check extensions if have it, if not CCleaner - PC Optimization and Cleaning - Free Download
Go to Tools menu, startup at top select Context Menu see what is in the list, select and disable any third party extensions.
Most of time reason for this when you right click and explorer crashes it's due to a shell extension.

As it says, if I open a folder and r/click any file (to send it to another disk), I get a message saying that Explorer has stopped working and then it is restarting. This happens every time I try this. It restarts OK every time but never tells me why it crashed.
When I go to do a System restore, it cannot complete the restore as it says a file cannot be accessed and that maybe an Anti-virus is running. I have disabled A/V and Firewall, both in Norton Internet Security which I only installed yesterday. All was working OK until later today, when I noticed that Windows 7 had installed 3 critical updates and I'm thinking that one or both are the cause?
These were KB973924 x 2 and KB972696.
Hope someone can help with this please!

Hello everyone!

I'm loving the new Windows 10! But this problem is really bugging me.

Whenever I right-click a file anywhere on the Desktop, the File Explorer crashes briefly and then comes right back up. This does not happen anywhere else, only on the Desktop.

I tried going to "HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT/*/shellex/ContextMenuHandlers" with RegEdit and removing some of them, but to no avail.

Anything to point me in the right direction or any suggestions?
Thank you in advance!

File Explorer hangs when I right click on any file to use move, cut, paste or copy commands. It sometimes also occurs if I right click on the Windows Icon in the task bar to bring up systems menu. It does not happen in a browser window or other app like Wordpad. This occurred recently after a few program installations and malware scans. CPU, Memory and Disk utilization are all less than 100%, so they are not maxed out.

I have been having problems with explorer crashing while I right click, open a folder, or a file...and this happens at random...sometimes one after another, sometimes not for a few hours. I have been running the Windows 7 7100 RC (64 bit) for about 3 months and I didn't have a single problem. I did a clean install to Windows 7 Home(64 bit) and I am running all of the same programs if not less, and have had a ton of these explorer.exe crashes. I recently did a repair from my install disc, nothing changed...explorer.exe still crashes alot.

Following the post by H2SO4, from this link Explorer crashing when deleting files

I successfully got explorer to crash almost immediately, So I will now upload that 2nd chance file to here ...

Thank you so much for any help

Hi Welcome to SF,

I guess the problem is related to the Context Menu. Download the ShellExView is an excellent tool to view and manage all installed shell extensions. The rule is to disable non-Microsoft context menu handlers *one-by-one* and verify if the problem is solved. If disabling one does not solve the problem, undo the disabled item and disable the next non-Microsoft handler. Do the same until the problem is solved and finally identify the culprit. Scroll right to see the Company Name column in ShellExView.

Hope this helps

hello.

whenever i click on an audio or video file, i get an error message which says, "explorer.exe has generated errors and will be closed by windows. you will need to restart the program. an error log is being generated."

i can still play these files if i first open a player and then open the file from within the player. the big problem is, i can't move, delete, or rename any audio or video files, because merely clicking on them generates the error and closes windows explorer.

i have done major research on the internet and can find nothing to fix this problem. somebody told me it was probably caused by a bad codec, so i uninstalled/deleted every codec i could find on my computer, still to no avail.

a further obstacle to solving the problem: the business here in town, who built and sold me my computer, failed to give me the win2000 install disk, and when i called them they insisted that yes they had given me an install disk, even though they really hadn't, and refused to give me one. now i know to do business elsewhere from now on, but unfortunately i don't have a win2000 install disk to use to repair any files.

if anybody knows anything that could help me with this extremely persistent and frustrating problem, i would greatly appreciate it (i want to avoid having to wipe my hard drive and reinstall windows, for obvious reasons).

thanks!

mike

A:click on media file, win explorer shuts down

My guess is that whatever player program you have associated to open these files has a problem.

As soon as you click on one of the files the association is attempted and all fails.

Re-associate the files to a different player (Windows Explorer - Tools - Folder Options (assuming 2k is similar to XP)

But you are sitting on a time-bomb with no Windows disk. You will need it sooner rather than later so you must resolve that. If your Windows version was OEM, they will have to have fitted the COA sticker on the case (to comply with MS license). If you have the CD Key from that sticker, try a call to MS and explain to them. If they have pirated the copy, you may get a free one, they may get some strife.

Hi,

OS: Win7 64bits Family

To add a vbscript or bat file to
Win7 Explorer right click menu, ones does the following:

Within Explorer:
1. type "shell:sendto"
into the address bar
2. drop the vbs, bat file

Now, in Explorer one selects any
file and by right clicking on it, under "send to" one has our vbs or bat files. Great, but how to achieve this with hta files????

Thanks

P.S. I would also be happy on selecting
a specify file type, for instance *.mp4, to have some kind of "open with" selection with my hta file.
However a simple HTA
having
<body onload="vbscript:vbsSayHello()">
with

sub vbsSayHello MsgBox "Hy"End Sub
Directly promps an error: filename.mp4 is not a valid win32 app
