I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi
I have windows 7 x64 bit. I was having an issue with ie8 and wanted to reinstall of ie8. I went to computer, and then uninstall or change a program. I then clicked on turn windowd features on or off. I unchecked IE8 and rebooted the computer. I then went back and rechecked ie8 and rebooted the computer to have ie8 back in the machine
I ran Autoruns and noticed a something running at
HKLM\software\microsoft\windows\start menu\programs\startup
and
HKEY Local Machine\Software\WOW6432Node\Microsoft\ActiveSetup\InstalledComponents.
under Internet Explorer - File not found.
Using the jump function, it took me to the following registry entry:
C:\Windows\system32\cmd.exe /D /C start C:\Windows\system32\ie4uinit.exe - ClearIconCache under:
If I disable the function via Autoruns it moves to a new key under the Installed Componenets called AutorunDisabled.
Is this a problem?
Can I delete the registry key from regedit so it does not startup at boot up?
Can I uncheck both of them from starting up\ - is it safe?
Any help would be appreciated
Thanks

Okay I've been playing around icons from deviantart.com; by editing the folder icons in imageres.dll

So I managed to get the files modified then as I logged into windows I saw there were a scattered number of folders that still had the old icons. I right-clicked on the folder and checked the customize tab and at the bottom the default icon shows the new icon. I can't figure out why the icon still shows the old icon but the customize tab shows the new one.

Then I checked out Brink's Rebuild_Icon_Cache.bat here:
Icon Cache - Rebuild

After using the batch file some of the icons still wouldn't display correctly even though the customize tab in all of them shows the new icon.

I checked in appdata for the iconcache.db file and manually deleted and recreated it but it still didn't fix the rebuild problem. I even used a third party program like sysicon that has a refresh icon option but that didn't help either.

Has anyone run into this problem?

Can you post some screenshots of the ones that are not changing, and maybe post a screenshot of what the icon is supposed to be.

Hey guys,

Something weird is happening. I have Windows XP Home with IE 6 and whenever I restart or shut down my PC the temp files are deleted.

Now the weird thing is the websites stay in my address bar, however when I go to file > open and type websites none come!

I checked and it dosnt have anything to do with the size limit on temp files cause no matter when I restart the PC it happens.

Any ideas? It never used to do this.

Hello guys,

I'm having a bit of a problem. Earlier tonight a couple of program icons started appearing as blank on my Windows 7 Pro PC. The programs in question were Word 07 and Powerpoint 07. I decided to try and fix them by rebuilding the icon cache but... unfortunately it just seems to have made things worse!

Now all of the Office programs have blank icons, as well as my anti-virus, Skype, Steam, WLM and a couple of others. Resetting and Rebuilding the Icon Cache keeps giving me the same results...

Does anyone know how to fix this?

Thanks!

A:Rebuild Icon Cache File - Certain programs now have blank/default icons. 8(

The original files or icons from which the icon cache is populated or the registry data pointing to them may have been damaged or somehow deleted. This is hard to sort out except by reinstalling the program.

Can you try reinstalling one of those programs to see if you can get it back as a test?

Office type programs might fix this by doing a "repair", but you may need the disk to complete it.

I have a huge image collection, spanning literally thousands of folders. The collection is pretty static - meaning once a file is placed in there, it stays unchanged. When browsing the collection in Explorer, it takes a long time for Windows to generate the large icons (thumbnails). I have increased my icon cache from 500 to 4096, but this still isn't large enough to cover the whole collection. So I end up sitting and waiting while Explorer regenerates icons again. And every time I scroll down, I have to wait while it regenerates more icons.

My question is:
Is there a way to force Explorer to generate all of the icons in a folder at once, rather than playing the scroll-wait-scroll-wait game?
Also, is there a way to make Explorer keep the icons so it doesn't have to regenerate so frequently?

Thanks,
Tom

A:How to force Explorer to build icon cache for a whole drive or tree?

I either close then reopen File Explorer [or Windows Explorer on Win7 and earlier] or I simply click the Name at the top of the column, or other heading, to reread how the files are listed to get the icons for the default programs to show instead of the generic ones. The problem with the view, and for the Desktop and other things, is that is a Dynamic view, constantly or frequently being redrawn. Static view would be like a picture on the wall, not changing at all.

Hi to eveyone who reads this.

I have a minor problem when I just used a cd/dvd or a virtual disk.
After using one above mentioned I see that the the Icon of that driver doesn't get refreshed automatically. (see screenshot)
Even after hitting the F5 repeatedly, it doesn't seem to have any effect at all, and neither does closing/re-open the Explorer window.
I have to log off or start up again.

So I hope that someone on this forum can provide me with tips on how to cure this issue.

Thanks for the time you took, see ya.

Here's the scoop:

I am trying to clear 16 pesky URL's that won't go away. I've tried rebooting, tried clearing the history, temp files, internet temp files, most recent documents. Ran windows cleanup, cleared the document history and still these 16 keep showing up.

I am runnnig Windows 2000 Pro (all updates done) and have even tried reinstalling IE6 SP1 as well still these 16 seem to be screwing up something when I try to go to the site that they go to (Pogo.com Solitaire...game).

I use VoptXP 7.22 to defrag and keep this computer clean and in Vopt you are able to delete the URL cache...well these 16 keep showing up in there and won't be deleted. Any ideas where these URL's are stored? Is there a file I can edit and delete these from? If I can get rid of the URL's then I figure I can find out if it's them that are causing problems with Pogo.com ...have even made sure I have the latest JavaVM as well. All bases covered just need to figure out where on this computer those URL's are getting stored to erase them. Thanks.

I just finished adding a computer to our business network (small business) and my internet started running very slow. I right clicked on the icon and the pop up said that "Windows could not finish repairing the problem because the following action cannot be completed: ARP Cache."

I went to a couple of help sites (before I found yours!) and did what they suggested, which caused various other issues. I've since started the computer back at a previous place, so at least now it's only my ARP Cache to be cleared.

I know you guys have an easy solution...

This problem happens when the "Remote services" service is enabled.

Go to Start > Run and type in services.msc. You will see a full list of services. Find "Routing and Remote Services" and double left-click it. Stop the service and then disable it. Then try and do the repair.

I am new to windows 7. How do I clear the cache, and where are all the other settings to work window 7 properly

A:clear the cache

You don't need to do anything to Windows 7 to make it work properly.

There are some things in Windows 7 that will never work properly and those things are not going to be fixed :-(

If you want to remove some temporary files, use these steps:
Disk Cleanup - Open and Use
But you probably will not see any performance gain.
Your antivirus scans might go a tiny bit faster if temp files are removed.

There was a great post in the SevenForums titled "General Fix for USB Driver Problems". I can follow all of the steps in that post on my Windows 10 machines except for deleting the INFCACHE.1 file. Is there the equivalent to the INFCACHE.1 file in Windows 10 that contains USB driver info? Is there an equivalent (or better) process for cleaning up USB driver problems/conflicts in Windows 10?

I work with/repair USB devices and can have over a dozen different devices a day plugged into my computer. I regularly clean out the hidden devices in my device manager, but have had a few conflicts I can't resolve and am wondering if I am missing a USB cache file that needs to be rebuilt.

Thanks so much!

Hi!
My problems began when I had a trojan that infected my NetBT.sys file. My antivirus removed this file and I had to copy the original file from my windows disk to get my internet back(using a static IP did work without the file).

Now,whenever I right click my wireless icon and select repair it performs all actions, until it gets to clearing Netbt cache and reports that it was unable to repair the connection and the reason is cannot clear Netbt cache.

Is this a problem for me? I do not connect to other computers on my network, just to my wireless router. Do I need to fix it? And if so can anyone suggest a method?

So far I have used winsockxpfix which didnt help
Disabled and Re-enabled TCP/IP in connection settings
Reset WINSOCK entries to installation defaults: "netsh winsock reset catalog"
Reset TCP/IP stack to installation defaults. "netsh int ip reset [log_file_name]"
Tried various other DOS command fixes but nothing has worked.

Like I said its not proving to be a problem. I can surf the net/play games and download things without an issue so do I need to even bother fixing it? Will it become a problem in the future?

Thanks in advance for any help

I am pretty close to ripping all my hair out. My cache in firefox will not clear, no matter what I do.

I have completely uninstalled and reinstalled it, after trying to do the tools way of clearing it. I can't find any other answers on what to do to make the damn thing clear.

I am positive it is not, because I'm doing some web developing stuff and I deleted a banner from my photo hosting site, and its showing up as the correct image in IE, Chrome, and half the time in Opera. At this point I don't care about it only working half the time in Opera, FF is my browser of choice and it will not update in it.

I'm using Firefox 3.0.13, Windows Vista Home Basic, and it didnt work before I put my addons back on, NoScript and WebNotifier.

Could someone please help me? I have never had this problem before.

Hi, not a big problem, but every so often I find net video clips start playing jerkily and sometimes freeze for a couple of minutes before continuing, and I have to navigate with a few clicks to clear my browser cache to get them running smoothly again which takes about 4 minutes to clear. Is there any way I can make my cache clear itself automatically when its getting full, instead of it needing me to go and nanny it?I'm Win XP Home, not too PC-literate.PS - I see my 'Max browser cache' is set at 128Mb, shall I leave it at that or set it to another figure? And just for the record, when the vids go jerky the 'Current cache' size is around the 97Mb mark

A:Can I Make Cache Self-clear?

Internet options/ advanced tab/ security/ choose empty temporary files when browser closesYou could also install a program such as Ccleaner. It takes seconds to clean up logs, temp files, cookies, etc.Remove temporary files, logs, cookies, etc. by using Ccleaner. Do not use "Advanced Settings" or the "Issues" button. Use only the default settings. http://www.ccleaner.com/When installing Ccleaner you will be offered the Yahoo Toolbar. If you don't want it, be sure to UNcheck.

Hi,

I have USB Memory card reader for SD/MMC card. If i insert a SD card in USB memory card reader autorun starts and i choose "open folder". After opening folder,i removed the SD card and insert another SD card. The autorun popups up and i select "open folder". The contents of first SD are displayed. If i want to get the the contents of new SD card, i need to press F5(refresh).

Is this the expected behavior in Windows Vista? While in windows XP, when i removed the first SD card, the Windows explorer is closed and when i insert the new SD card a new windows explorer windows is opened.

How can i get the same behavior in Vista as i observe in Windows XP.

Regards,
Madhu

The major problem with Windows Seven:

In Explorer the icons are too close together. Setting the icon spacing apart only changes the behavior on the desktop.

I HATE THIS.

The icons are too close together and the text barely has any room! I want my icons medium sized but I need more room!

Please tell me there is a fix for this garbage behavior!

A:Explorer Icon View - How to distance icons, more text?

Welcome!
Your question is a common one. Unfortunately, there does not seem to be a solution at this time. You can always try holding Ctrl and scrolling with the mouse wheel. See if you can satisfy yourself with different icon sizes.

Hi,

I have been using Mcaffe virus protection and am sure it removed application icons for Word, excel and powerpoint when it said it found a virus. I have re-installed these applications, but in windows explorer it still does not show icons for these file types. I have since removed mcaffe and started to use AVG free.

Can anyone please assist me. Thanks

I'm trying to automate some stuff before i sysprep to ghost.
I can't figure out how to clear the profile cache for the account that i'm logged in as thru the command line...

What i'm trying to duplicate is...

Right click on the taskbar and choose properties
click the start menu tab
click the customize buttton
click the clear button (to remove records of recently accessed documents, programs, and web sites...)

I've seen on some sites, to call a number of .dll's to do this for IE7.
Is that what the "clear" button is doing?

My environment is
Windows XP Pro
IE6 sp2
I have full admin rights to the system
Thanks

For some reason i can not access the "settings" in java to delete the temp files or clear the cache.Whe i depress the "settings" button under the general tab, nothing happens.I know a window is suppose to pop up when i depress this button to clear the java cache.I tried uninstalling and reinstalling java several times but still to no avail.I know i have downloaded the right version for my 32 bit browser. It is also the latest version.I feel as though something may be corrupt even though i have reinstalled it.Every thing else works in the java console but this one button. The java site itself confirms that it is downloaded and working right and that there is no other version on my computer. Is there another way to get to the java temp files? If so,could someone tell me where they are located? thankyou

Hey everyone... I had the "Can't clear the DNS Cache" problem and now I solved it, by seting it to Auto in the "services" from right clicking on My computer (after going through this link: http://forums.techguy.org/networking...dns-cache.html)...

But I couldn't enter Services.msc from the run! and The internet is stil not workin after I Cleared the DNS Cache. I even realised that gpedite.msc and msconfig don't work either!
I have Windows XP Home edition.

My laptop is Connecected Via wireless Network to a D-Link and now I'm using the Desktop which is connected directly (wired) to the D-Link.

Anyone help please and thanks in Advance.

P.S. All the problem started right after I auto-updated ma windows and I tried to Restore, yet still Browsing isn't working.

Hello and thanks in advance to anyone who may reply. After a fresh install of a scaled down version of windows I can no longer set up a static ip address. I cannot clear or repair the DNS cache with the repair button or in the command prompt screen. Windows tells me that the cache does not exist. Is is possible that this component was left out of the version of windows I installed.

I have a computer that won't clear the memory cache from one disk to the next. After boot up, it will read a floppy and display the data, however, if you remove the disk and put in another one, it will display the data from the first disk. The only way to correct the problem and read another disk is to reboot the computer. Every once in a while, that will not work either. Has anyone ever experienced this problem and know of a possible fix? Thanks much.

Hello Itsik,

Just to be sure of what you meant, when you say reset, what do you mean by that and what is it doing compared to what you believe it should be doing?

Could you post a screenshot of what this looks like when it reset?
