Adjusted startup: HP Factory Image drive disappears after each restart

Q: Adjusted startup: HP Factory Image drive disappears after each restart

Two problems, related in timing.

On July 1st, I made some adjustments to my startup config and such, and ever since then I've been having problems where my IE and Windows Media Player freeze for a few seconds when loading (though without interrupting data)

But most important of which is that since that time, my HP Factory Image D:\ drive has disappeared. It never served me any purpose, but it always just sat there in my Hard Disk lists on my Computer screen, and is conspicuous in its absence.

I checked my Disk Management and found that the 12 GB where the "D" drive was had become "Unallocated". Before I did something stupid, I checked to Rescan Drives, and it re-found the Factory Image! From then on, the FACTORY_IMAGE (D shows up in my Computer.

But after a few days I found that it was no longer showing on my Computer window, and realized that after restarting or shutting down my comp, it would always disappear, only to re-appear when I rescan my disks.

What's the problem? What service do I need to restore/fix to stop this from happening?

Somewhat related question: Would getting a whole new motherboard and CPU but retaining the old harddrive end these problems mentioned above or is it something to do solely with my faulty configurations?

Preferred Solution: Adjusted startup: HP Factory Image drive disappears after each restart

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

This is a 2013 Toshiba Lx835-D325 all-in-one with a 3rd generation Intel i7 CPU. Originally had a 2 TB HDD and takes a 180 watt AC adapter.

The screen shows a "no media found" message for 5 seconds when first engaged by attaching the AC adapter plug, then fades back to a black screen. The power button starts the machine but no display image is revealed unless detaching and then re-attaching the power plug. The power button lights and starts the computer but fails to engage a display image. Could it be the power switch? The small power switch board is shown in the last picture.

So on my 3-week old Dell XPS 13 Gold edition, I went to start it up today and Windows would not boot - a file "winload.efi" is missing.Startup repair wouldn't fix.
All PC diagnostics done from the BIOS say that everything passed.
When I first purchased the PC, I immediately made a USB recovery media using the built-in using the instructions here:

I am pressing F12 on startup and selecting the USB drive as the boot device. I select the "US" keyboard layout, then I try to "Recover from a Drive". I immediately get a message stating "Unable to recover".

So I try to do a "Factory Image Restore". A Dell window pops up briefly stating "Updating Files", then gives me the error "No Factory Image Found".
*sigh* Is there anything else I can do, apart from paying DELL for recovery media? I REALLY don't want to do that, seeing as the PC is only 3 weeks old, has already had WiFI & Bluetooth issues, and cost over a THOUSAND dollars........................

A:Factory Image Drive (D)

The factory image drive is just suppose to contain the image of your OS, in case you need to reinstall. The computer company should make the drive large enough to hold the required information and no more, since any space will be taken from your C drive and that is the one that you use.
Can you tell me the total size of your D drive, to see if it is working correctly?

I tried to install a program and got the message that I had no memory.  But I've only use a small fraction of my 4 gig HP drive, but I see there is something called the "factory image drive" about 1.5 gigs that is nearly full.  What is the "factory image drive" and is this preventing me from installing my program?

A:What is the "factory image" drive?

The Factory Image D drive is the recovery partiton on the computer, you need to save your programs to the C drive. The D drive only has enough space on it to hold the recovery information and little else, you will need to use recovery discs to get the information that you saved to the D out of there since you can go into the D drive and delete anything.

Recently a friend of mine mistakenly formatted his both drives ( C: OS & D: factory Image). There was no backup for the factory image. I was able install a new OS for him. Then I tried recovering the factory image from the D drive, which I succeed in doing.
The problem now is that the recovered Image could not load anymore. My plan was to use it to restore his PC to factory state.
Is it possible to use the recovered image just like that or do I need to do something to it first.
I tried burning it to DVD but the file is too large. I could not split it into different DVDs without knowing if it will work after splitting.
Please advice on what to do to make it work again.

I have a dell 580s system with win7 home premium os. Its hard drive (wd5000aaks) has almost failed. I"m using "almost" because system is unable to boot but i am able to move my files in and out of the system by going in to recovery console where there is a option named "load drivers". It all started when one day my system hung up and i did a forced shut down and after restart it started giving a s.m.a.r.t. error and took me to bios screen where i did'nt know what to do so i just selected "exit without saving" option. From there it was giving "bootmgr is missing " error and despite trying for 3-4 weeks i was unable to resolve the issue so i bought a new hard drive (wd10ezex) . After which i did a fresh install using (1) my windows installation cd (2) dell inspiron desktop software disc (3) dell drivers and utilities disc , all of which i received with this system but after installation there were several programs missing like adobe reader , some windows apps like windows picture manager and windows live photo gallery etc. , some dell apps were also missing . So my question is that is there anyway by which i can do a factory image reinstall on this new hard drive ? Because of unawareness i had not created any image recovery media at the time of receiving the new system . A:How to do a factory image restore on a new hard drive

Since you have Win 7 HP installation disk and the Dell drivers disk that is all you really need to set your computer up and running on your new hard drive. In fact i am surprised when you say you have both these disks and a recovery partition.
If you really want these Windows apps that are apparently missing it might be worth your while to re-install Windows. Failing that, I would go for the free VLC player -
And for the picture manager I would go for Irfanview and its associated thumbnail viewer, which is another free download from here -
You should also get the plug-ins for Irfanview, from the same place. I use both these applications, fairly intensively. Also, for the Adobe reader -
As for your question about copy/pasting your recovery partition, I can think of no reason why it shouldn't work but it might want you to create a small partition to put it in for it to work properly. Personally, I would be more concerned about saving any of my data that is still on this failing drive before it gives up the ghost completely.

I recently decided to install Linux on my PC which came running Windows XP. I was attempting to re-install XP as a second OS, but it is unable to run the install setup becuase the original backup image was deleted when Linux partitioned the HD. I don't have a full version of XP, only the factory restore and it can't get past the missing backup image. Is there a way around this, or possible a way to retrieve the backup image. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

A:Lost factory hard drive backup image

If you are sure that the Linux install wiped the Recovery Image, then you could be in trouble. Your best bet is to try the PC manufacturer's Support and see if they have a CD version. Not a good chance though.

Try getting hold of a utility like Disk Investigator to confirm what partitions are on your hard drive. There might also be a chance for a recovery with Disk Investigator.

Hi there
If you want to re-format the entire disk then the easiest way is to download something like Partition wizard (Free) make a boot disk / usb stick and load boot the program . You can move / re-size partitions too.

Although before doing this backup what you need from the system to external HDD -- I'd also backup the hidden manufacturers recovery partition too.

Use Free Macrium or other imaging program for that.

I have a Dell Venue 11 Pro (5130) running Windows 8.1 Pro, what I would like to do, if possible, is to replace the factory restore on the recovery partition with a custom image so that if or when
the factory rest option is selected it uses my custom image and not the default one.
The problem I am having is that the default image is only 6GB in size where as when I create my custom image it is approx 14GB in size.
Is there a way of editing the default image to add in certain settings and software?

Modifying the System Recovery partition is not what you want to do.  You will not be able to modify is, and you may find that you need to use this at some time in the future.  I would suggest that you use a program like Macrium Reflect.  You can find a tutorial for it here.

Just got Win 7 64 bit computer and have several programs that use Amyuni PDF converter (Quicken & Alpha Software), everything installed correctly (I did have to manualy add NUL: port) and I was able to create PDF's .... until I restarted the computer, then none of the programs would create PDF's, I looked at the ports and the NUL: port was gone, I added again and everything worked, I restarted again and the NUL: port was gone again. I have looked at every thredd on this forum I could find and many threads on Quicken forums and Alpha Software Forums and found many others with same problem, and tried every solution they proposed, but have not found anything that works. My temporary solution is to select FILE as the port and enter the pdf file and path every time I want to create a PDF, but this is not a very satisfactory solution.

A:NUL: port disappears on restart

After more testing I found that it is the print spooler that is removing the NUL: port, if I stop and start the spooler the port is gone. when the port is first added the following are added to the registry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Ports NUL: REG_SZ (no data)
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Ports NUL: REG_SZ (no data)
and all of the ports in those keys are displayed in Devices and Printers->Print Server properties->ports, after restarting the spooler the NUL: port no longer shows up in the property->ports list, but it is still in the above keys. So if the port is still in the only registry key created when it was added, why does it not show up in the list ? I tried this on another windows 7 computer, and the port does not disappear, the only difference between the computers is the first is Professional, the second is Home Premium

I am running Windows 7 Ultimate x64 and after restarting the computer Network Discovery is turned off and I have to manually restart Network Discovery each time so other machines on the network can see this machine.

Are you running any type of VMware adaptor software on your machine? This is the main cause of this problem from what I have read about it.

If you have VMware installed these are two possible solutions.Disable the adapters altogether and use bridging instead (in VMware, select edit>Virtual network settings and disable the adapters), as explained here.

I'm new to this forum and also to Windows 7. We recently upgraded to Windows 7 on our computers (at work). There are 4 computers all running Windows 7 Pro 64bit on the Work Network. One of the computers has an external HDD (My Passport Essential USB 2.0 500 GHz).

The external HDD works fine and is accessible from all the network computers. However every time the computer is restarted or shut down for the night and turned on in the morning, the external HDD is gone. I have to unplug the USB cable and replug it in again. Then the drive is on the list in the Computer tab and available to the network again.

If anyone has any suggestions on how to keep the external drive from disappearing it would be greatly appreciated.

My problem is that I am trying to restore a friend's Dell Studio 1555 laptop back to its factory settings, I follow the procedure mentioned on Dell's website however there is no Dell Factory Image Restore option. I have checked the laptop's Disk Management and there is a Recovery partition, in fact there are 3 partitions:

1. A 39MB OEM partition with no letter assigned.

2. C: Simple Basic NTFS with Status Healthy (Boot, Page File, Crash Dump, Primary Partition) 451GB.

3. Recovery: Simple Basic NTFS with Status Healthy (System, Active, Primary Partition) 14.65GB.

In short, when the computer starts I hit F8, I enter the Advanced Boot Options and select Repair Your Computer. I then select the language and login with the administrative account, however there is no Dell Factory Image Restore option there. My options are shown the image below:

Another issue that concerns me is that on the picture above it says Windows 7 on (D: ) Local Disk, however there is no such partition on the laptop's disk.

I would be thankful if anyone could give some advise on how to restore the laptop to its factory settings using the recovery partition. Thank you.

is it just certain tools that you can't see? eg pen tool or paintbrush? Your paintbrush size might just be so small (eg 1 pixel) and your image so large that you just can't see it, unless you're zoomed in of course. Try upping the size of the tool if so.

Whenever I access a folder containing pictures, the thumbnails for them generate -- and I can actually see them. But this only lasts for a few seconds; the thumbnails get replaced by Vista's generic landscape icon. I'm not sure when this problem started -- at first, I was not bothered by it, since I wasn't working with my photos, so I didn't pay attention to it. But it has persisted for at least a month, in all folders with pictures in them. And I've made sure that the "Show thumbnails" options were set in both "Folder Options" and "Advanced System Settings". Maybe it was from me changing the registry a long time ago? I'm not sure. So, if someone knows a key I could check to turn on/off thumbnails, that would be useful.Or, if you have any other idea how this problem occurred, I'd be really grateful. Thank you!

Good morning all,

Last night I was tooling around on The Elder Scrolls Online when my computer suddenly turned itself off and back on. Shrugged it off, got back in, tried to log back into the game, and shut down again. Updated vid drivers, ran registry cleaner, repaired game launcher and launched again. At launch, the comp crashed and reset again. Two more times as I tried running as admin to isolate the problem. Finally gave up on the game (figured it was due to the update) and swapped over to a different game. Upon launch of that game, the computer reset again. However this time it wouldn't even let me log into windows. Either after the password screen, or before it even gets there (but always during Windows startup) it resets.

Ran in safe mode + networking. No problems. Tried watching some you-tube videos on some repair options...computer reset again. Ran memtest86 on 4 passes. No errors. Woke up, got back on, same issues. Tried to watch videos in safe mode....and at random time it resets computer again. No other actions have been able to replicate the shut down.

The first shutdown produced an error when i restarted stating that d3dx9_42.dll was missing. I clicked OK on the screen, and it reset again.

Welcome to SevenForums,

If you can still log onto windows desktop, you can try reinstall the Microsoft DirectX End-Users Runtimes(June 2010) full package from HERE

Seeing you have a custom build i assume you've got the Windows 7 DVD which can help you doing a System Repair directly from the DVD or accessing to the System Repair options at boot..

You can first do the basis, and here find some related Tutorials that might help you solving your star-up problem aswell:

System Recovery Options - How to Boot to the System Recovery Options in Windows 7

SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker

Startup Repair - How to Run a Startup Repair in Windows 7

Disk Check - How to Run Disk Check in Windows 7

Also looking at your Specs, you're not overclocking that core i7 3770S on that z77 Sabertooth?

Hello there!  I have a Radeon 6850 video card and I use the HDMI Audio as my sound output.  Sometimes however, it disappears on startup and I have to use the executable and reinstall it.  I don't know what causes this.  Anyone out here have an idea? Thanks!

A:Audio device disappears on startup.

The very first thing you need to do is to update your ATI driver. First go to control panel and uninstall ATI drivers completely. You can find the latest ATI driver from http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/Pages/index.aspx
Report back if the problem still continues after updating drivers.

Problem: The Wild Tangent Error Pop-up was solved on my desktop computer by using:

START ---- RUN---type in msconfig-----then going to START-UP and unchecking the Wild Tangent File...... But.....

Our Laptop has the same problem, which is an XP also.....we tried the above solution. The lap top has SPY Bot, and Ad Ware removal like my desktop computer, but now we have a new problem before we solve the Wild Tangent problem.

And that is.......When we go to click the Start-up Tab in the System Configuration Ultilty which brings us to all the files on Start-up, we do see all the files but, the page disappears after about 5 seconds, it acts like it is timing out.

This quick disappearing act does not give us a chance to find the file and unclick the Wild Tangent file to solve our problem.

How do we fix the Start-up so it will last more than 5 seconds?

Thanks for all your help!

I have a dell inspiron 17 laptop. So I did a factory restart on my computer. Now when I try to set it up after I put in my country and timezone it wants to install an update. I followed all the steps for connecting it to the internet and letting it run whatever it need to do, but it's not working. It keeps wanting to go through the process over and over again. I've probably done it like 10 times. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You can skip the update phase and move on. Do Windows Update later.

I just did a clean install of windows 7 and it carried the factory image over, it's now D. How do I get rid of this partition? This is an Hp computer if that helps and the d partition is Vista.

A:Factory Image

Are you are absolutely certain you don't want it ? You may want to restore the previous o/s for a number of reasons - not least if you want to sell the machine.

If not, delete the partition.
