PC starts, stops, starts, stops, etc...

Q: PC starts, stops, starts, stops, etc...

I just bought a new mobo, processor and ram for my PC, kept the PSU, DVD, Video card and HDD.

After replacing everything, I started it up and got the failure no bootable system found. Since I replaced so much, I thought it possible this could happen but I planned ahead to reinstall the OS anyway.

I put in the windows disk, installed windows, restarted and booted into windows. Put the mobo driver CD in, ran the multi-driver installer, installed all the drivers and restarted and got the no boot disk error again.

Went into BIOS, made sure HDD was detected and the primary boot device. Everything A-OK. Then I restarted and now it starts and within 3 seconds powers down. Holds about 5 seconds then tries to start again, but powers down after 3 seconds. It did this about 4-5 times before I shut it down.

Not really sure where to go from here. Originally I had 3 HDDs all hooked up, so I took all them off and only left the main OS and DVD drive, so everything but the core hardware is installed.

Preferred Solution: PC starts, stops, starts, stops, etc...

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

A: PC starts, stops, starts, stops, etc...

I've made some headway. After posting this, I took about an hour break and came back, hit the power button and booted right up. Did some more installs, restarted a few times, good to go.

Then I started hooking devices back up. I had 2 more HDD's, one SATA and one IDE. Sata worked fine, but then when i hooked up the IDE I get the boot failure error again. HDD boot order is correct, but still nothing. It's the only IDE component I have but never seems to work.

Also, after I started trying to hook it up I got the power on/off again. Sometimes it never starts, some times it powers up/down once or twice then boots on the subsiquent one. Seems to work fine when it's finally up though. I don't think it's a power issue since I can keep the IDE HD powered up, I just can't connect the cable, but it would seem to be.

Hi, Ive had my laptop (hp pavillion g6) for almost 5 years now and have never had a major issue. Recently, when using my laptop (just for tasks such as browsing the web and word processing) the fan whirs for a few seconds then stops for a few seconds, then whirs then stops constantly. It is becoming quite irritating! This happens both unplugged and plugged in and in various locations. I wondered if anyone had any ideas on why this may be and a way to either prevent it or see if the fan is broken? Thanks!

Replaced motherboard had system working with conflicts. Now with power on cpu fan spins a half a turn then stops?? Its a pb 233 with 32 ram win 98. Does the power flow through the memory chips prior to powering the cpu??

A:cpu fan starts then stops!

Shouldn't happen. I'd first make sure it's securely plugged in, look for any frayed wiring to it, not a lot of debris building up around it, and then I'd be looking to replace it pronto!

At first my computer would not reboot. Then I unplugged everything and took out the memory chips and moved it so I could get to it. When I plugged everything back in the computer would start-up and shut-down in 5sec. intervals. It only stopped when I unplugged the ATX_12V power supply to the motherBoard. It is the power for the CPU. It is a Gigabyte 695p motherboard. I do not know if it is the power supply or motherboard or CPU chip. Can you help me?

A:Computer starts and stops

First you can try taking out the memory sticks again and re-seat them and see if the problem goes away.

Another thing, try clearing the cmos and see if that helps as well. Refer to your motherboard manual for the cmos jumper location.

Hi, a friend has asked me to look at a machine which according to her 'when I go onto the internet, does not work'. I have little more to go on than that, but my first thoughts after checking device manager (all is ok) was to check for a virus. I've downloaded on another machine the latest version of MBAM and installed this fine. When I try to execute it though, it tells me the database is 70 days out of date and if I click yes to update, the program stops. No messages or anything, just stops. If I don't update it presents me with the main MBAM screen, but when I click 'scan', the program again just stops.

Grateful for any suggestions.

First of all, you CANNOT post similiar threads multiple times.. So please don't. Be patient and let give us some time to answer your question or solve your problem.

Secondly, you have to be more specific about your current situation. Be sure to open up necessary ports if you have a firewall, and double check your IP addresses.

Here is a solution that has worked in the past, so it's worth trying.

1. Turn off your laptop, unplug all wires, and remove the battery.

2. Hold the power button for thirty seconds.

3. Afterwards, reattach the battery and connections.

4. Boot the notebook up and see if the battery will charge now.

Let me know if that solution works for you or not. Best of luck!

This is usually caused by a slow internet connection. What are your computer specs? Right click MY Computer/Properties and report the Processor speed, and the RAM (memory) installed. Then open My Computer right click the C: drive/Properties and report the amount of Free Space.
Now go to speedtest.net and report your internet speed. You can also download the latest Adobe Flash and Java.

Hi Folks,

My daughter's Dell computer has run fine up until recently. When she starts her computer, everything starts up normally, but then all the icons on the desktop vanish, only to reappear 10 - 15 seconds later. This continues to occur for about 5-8 minutes, and then they just disappear altogther. I can make them reappear at that point by using the Task Manage run command. When I open Task Manager and watch the processes, explorer.exe disappears and reappears (in concert with the icons of course). Programs run once opened, but the desktop continues to disappear and reappear.

She was running for a period of time without virus software (I know, I know, what was she thinking). I have loaded Norton Anti-Virus, updated virus definitions and scanned her machine (22 viruses found and quarantined), but the intermittent explorer.exe thing is still there.

Any suggestions prior to me just wiping the disk clean and reloading Windows? Thanks

Hello and Welcome to TSF

The security team can help you with those. You are probably still infected. We cannot assist you with this issue here in the Microsoft Support Forum.

Please read this sticky: http://www.techsupportforum.com/f112...ed-203704.html

If you cannot complete any of the 5 steps for whatever reason, just continue on with the next one until they are all completed, and post your logs in The HJT Help Forum; where an Analyst will assist you. However, it is very important to make mention of any of the steps that you were not able to complete.

After you?ve posted your logs, please be patient, as the Security Team Analysts are very busy.

Ok, so I've got a new PC, first time I turned it on, it totally stopped working, can't move mouse, can't use keyboard, you know, totally blocked. So I've restarted it and then it was okay, so I've ignored it. Now, after 3-4 days, avast detected some malware, around 22, I've choose to "move to chest", but 4 files couldn't be moved, so I choose to delete, I got a message that it would be deleted after reboot, so I've restarted it and same thing happened, PC totally blocks, programs start turning on (Skype, Avast...etc) after they turned on, PC blocks. Anyway, I tought that avast, since it was free and all, was actually reporting files that aren't actually viruses, but are important for windows to work, so now it blocks all the time, when It starts up, because those files were important, tought that's my guess, you know the best.

Now I'm in safe mode (with networking) to try and find some help, everything's okay now, so it might be some program that's causing this when I start it normally.

Ok, I have been looking all over and been at it now over 6 hours so I am pretty ticked off right now. Just got a new desktop today with Windows 7 and a WRT610N Router along with a WUSB600N V2 dongle as the tower had no room in it for my PCI card. Anyways, after figuring out the CD rom that came with the dongle was nothing but fail, I found the latest driver on the linksys site, that got me futher, all the way to the same problem I am having with the ralink driver. I pick up the networks and what not, when I go to connect however the green slider makes it just to the end and stops moving, and nothing happens no matter how long you wait patiently.

I am never prompted for a pass. I tried turning off that secure thing on the linksys router, it made no difference, I am frustrated and out of ideas, any suggestions? I called linksys support and the douche on the other end of the line insisted on getting me the drivers again, and put me on hold for 10 minutes when I finally hung up.

I am working on a Toshiba Satellite M45-S169 running Win XP It keeps shutting itself down. Basically, it will shut itself off with increasing frequency, and then, at some point, it will shut off and refuse to restart. When I try to start it, the fan turns on, but nothing else no hard drive, no monitor. If I hold down the power button, it will just continue to restart and do the same thing. It takes sometimes 20-30 tries to get it up and running again. Once it's on, it's okay, but obviously something is messed up. I have checked the hard drive with CHKDSK and all is ok. I used a program from Toshiba to check the memory, hard drive, video, audio etc and all is ok. The heatsink is not blocked and I don't see anything fried on the motherboard. Any suggestions would greatly appreciated. I am about to pull out my hair on this one. I forgot to mention I did a defrag and virus scan while the computer was up and running. I also checked msconfig to see if there was anything running that I could eliminate to correct the problem. I looked in control panel to be sure there were no unrecognized programs loaded.
Thanks in advance.

I am experiencing a constant and most annoying issue with my new computer with a new Ultimate x64 Vista install.

The thing just "Hangs." I can be going along, often in a browser, either IE7, now 8 and Firefox, or in other programs and such, and the thing just stops. The sidebar CPU meters will be slowed and the graph drops to the bottom, the Network Meter activity drops to the bottom too. Often the background stops but not always and the same for the second hand on the clock. The circular Aero spins and the windows are unresponsive, often the window is reported as "Not Responding" and if something does respond to a mouse click only the button moves but any corresponding program action doesn't happen.

The thing will then just sit there like this for half a minute, a minute, sometimes a minute and a half, and then suddenly eveything starts running again and zooms right along. Till the next time which could be the next time I click on something or a few minures later, or longer or shorter.

I am coming to my wits end. I am almost beginning to believe the Mac guy on the commercial.

I have downloaded and run the System Info program.

Can someone please help?

I've got a Gigabyte GA-K8NS Pro motherboard with a AMD Athlon 64 2800 processor. The heatsink fan stops and starts during bootup.

At first I didn't notice the pattern so I got a replacement fan from my supplier because I thought the fan was failing.

The pattern is that the fan starts when I power up the machine. During the BIOS screen the fan shuts down. Finally, just after the the "Windows XP Startup.wav" plays the fan restarts and stays running for the entire time I've got the machine on.

I don't know but perhaps the fan has always done this and I'm just now noticing.

Has anyone ever heard of something like this?

This setup is about a month to a month and a half old.

A:Solved: CPU fan stops and starts

I figured this out. In the BIOS there's a setting for "CPU Smart Fan Control". I changed it from enabled to disabled and it solved the problem.

Hello, I have been using HP Pavilion g6 since 2012. I lent my laptop to my sister. She said that computer first warmed up, then shut down. When I checked, the fan was not working. I took the computer parts, cleaned the fan and the inside. When I put the pieces together, when I turned on the computer again, the fan still did not work.More precisely, it worked, but after 3 seconds it was shutting down. This loop continues this way. I replaced it with a spare part of the fan, but the same problem continued. I uploaded a video for the status summarization. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LTaHbmLNT8Y&feature=youtu.be I have tried -Remove the bios battery and reset the bios.-Reinstalling the operating system-Press the power key for 30 seconds. I just did not update bios.I do not know if it will be useful. I did not want to do it because it was risky. The fan runs very fast when the computer is first turned on, but then this problem occurs. It's really a strange problem.  Do you have any suggestion?

HiJackThis is a diagnostic and repair tool that tells us some very basic information about your computer, including OS, internet browser version, and service packs, which helps us to analyze your problem. I have recently installed anti-virus on my other computer. I turned it off last night and this morning I turned it on to find the mouse and KB don't work. I have looked in the bios everything is enabled, I tried to boot into safe mode and that doesn't work either, as soon as windows starts loading the mouse shuts off.

The computer is a dell XPS 410, they will not support it because its a couple months out of warranty. I have seen this problem on my old dell and I reseted the CMOS to fix it. This did not work on this new problem. The forums of dell are no help either.

My OS is Windows XP Home, SP2, Processor: AMD Athlon(tm) XP 1800+, MMX, 3DNow, ~1.5GHz, 2048MB RAM, Monitor: DCLCD 17 Plug and Play Monitor - Max Res: 1600,1200, Display Memory: 256.0 MB, ATI RADEON 9600 Series AGP, DirectX 9.0c.

The problem I'm having is that I've downloaded the above 3D Windows XP Screensaver from www.microsoft.com - Microsoft Download Center and installed it correctly. However, when I select it as the current screensaver and attempt to preview it, it appears briefly (3 or 4 seconds) and then abruptly cuts off as if the keyboard or mouse was touched. So I clicked on "APPLY and OK" anyway to use it as the current screensaver with a 5 minute delay, (there are no property settings for this particular screensaver). Now, whenever the screensaver activates after the 5 minute delay, it does the same thing. What is the problem? Ive had absolutely no problems with any other screensaver other than this one.

This is my first time posting, and by no means am I a network pro.
I am having an issue with my network traffic starting and stopping. I have a 6 mbps DSL connection, and when downloading or streaming, I hit 6 mbps for a few seconds, then drops down to three or so, then nothing. A few seconds later it starts up again. My TCP connection seems consistent. Here is a screen shot from Resource Monitor.
Does anyone have an idea what might cause this?

Hello all,
hoping for a bit of guidance. I have a HP t490.uk, 3.2G P4, 1G ddr RAM, 240G hd drive and a Radeon 9600. When playing any game, when the fan starts the screen momentarily freezes and then carries on, but again when the fan stops it freezes. This problem may seem small and I expect some ppl have more need for support but it really is doing me in! All parts are original and I have not (knowingly) tampered with anything. I have all the most recent drivers and directX9. I have had this problem since buying the PC but do not wish to return the thing as all I hear is horror stories about PC world. Any help would be gratefully recieved,Thanks.

I am unsure when the problem started, but it became noticeable as I tried to reinstall an HP printer. It came up with a message that the spooler was stopped !

I went to the Computer Management and the Print Spooler status showed Started.
So I displayed the Properties and let the Property Panel opened for a while.
The status switches from Stopped to Started every 2-3 seconds.
When I put the Startup-type to Manual, it makes no difference.
The only way to stop to change the Startup-type to Disable.

Any clue?

Almost all the time, even when not actively using my laptop the fan on the left starts and stop about ever three seconds. It bugs my wife so much I can not work in the same room as her, and I admit it bugs me to more and more. Any ideas how I might fix this, eg in the BIOs, or? I have changed the Windows cooling properties with no effect. I have also killed all the Startup processes, with no change. In fact, it does it when starting up, before windows runs, even after a full windows shutdown.

I have a Dell Inspiron N5010 laptop, it's a few years old. I'm on Windows 7. The problem I'm having is that the computer will be running fine, and suddenly the computer will begin to start and stop, running so slow that I have to reboot. I can see in the Task Manager that the CPU usage fluctuates between 0% and a normal level. All other indications of the computer 'working' - the processing light on the keyboard, the movement of the mouse, the sound of the computer working - all start and stop in sync. It's like the whole system freezes every half second and then unfreezes again. After rebooting it goes back to normal.

The problem started back in March. At first it happened several times in one week. Then it seemed to go away for a while, and now it's been happening somewhat frequently again (two days in a row just now). I can't think of anything I did back in March that would have caused it, nor can I think of a pattern of what actions trigger it.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Sadly don't have access to the PC anymore, but I'm trying to gain the knowledge if I encounter this going forward. Tried to install QuickBooks 2014 via DVD on a Windows 8.1 system two weeks ago. The splash screen would appear, then disappear, and never continue. I tried:
turning off Windows Firewall (didn't have any others on their network)
no antivirus to turn off
copying files to C: and running from there
both auto-run and manually exploring DVD drive for setup.exe file
running from another PC's DVD drive, then shared over the network
successfully ran the install on another PC from the same DVD
I remember I perused QuickBooks' site for help without avail, and the Event Viewer on the PC, but didn't see anything pertinent. I was able to turn off Windows Defender through the Control Panel, but not through services.msc. I didn't have the permissions, yet I was signed on as a local admin, and right-clicked Services in order to Run as administrator.
The lack of permissions to turn off Defender made me think there was some sort of virus preventing the install. I did a clean install of Windows 8.1 and was able to run the DVD fine. Any suggestions? Has anyone encountered this before with QuickBooks or another piece of software?

Today my computer found and quarantined virumonde then said I needed to restart. After restarting, I entered in my windows log in password and it started to load, but then saved and brought me back to log in screen. I have tried numerous attempts and still get the same results. I get the same with trying to start in safe mode. I have read some posts and cleaned the inside out and made sure all fans are running, but still no success in getting to desktop. Any suggestions to fix this would be greatly appreciated as that computer has my final assignment on it and I have no way to retrieve it to be handed in next week.

I am running Win Xp Home edition on a Gateway 700X model compuer and not sure what other informatin will be helpful as this is my first time using a forum.

Thank you for any help,

A:PC starts then stops windows loading

I have looked over some posts and decided to run the windows repair disk that came with the computer and can now get desktop to load. Can anyone help me search for and remove whatever caused this to happen in the fist place? I will run antivirus and post what it finds. But as for hijack this logs, I have no idea how to post them to help you in helping me but will dig thru more boards to see what I can come up with.

This sounds similar to a problem I read with someone installing a game. I am trying to install a recent version of Olympus DSS Player and the install shield fails. When I try to uninstall an earlier version of Olympus DSS Player the uninstall fails in exactly the same way. The Olympus set up screen can be minimized but not closed so I have to shut down to get rid of it. I have tried System Restore but that failed at several restore points from 'An unspecified error occurred during System Restore'. I was able to install Typequick and Uninstall Nero since this problem occurred so it is not general. At one point I received the error message 'An installation support file "\temp\lot of numbers\Is User.dll" could not be installed - acccess denied'. Can anyone help? Thanks.

A:Vista Installshield starts but then stops

My first action would be to examine that folder. If you cannot see it try a search for, say, lot of numbers. As it is a tem, I would then delete the whole thing under temp and then try the install again.

E1-510P-29208G50MnkkWhile under warranty, my laptop suddenly wouldn't turn on correctly. The fan starts and the LEDs light up for a few seconds and the system shuts off. It then starts again and gets caught it a loop. It never gets to the boot screen. The first time it happened, tech support was unable to help online and I had to send it in to be repaired. I cant find the sheet that they sent saying what they did but my computer was sent back and none of my settings were changed. My laptop is now doing this again and is no longer under warranty. Any idea what this could be?I have already tried draining the power out by unplugging and removing the battery and holding the power button. I have also tried turning on without the battery in and sometimes it does the shutting on/off and sometimes it wont start at all. The only significant thing that happened was the battery had drained entirely right before this issue happened. Also, my adaptor occasionally has an intermittent connection but the led light is lit orange so I do not believe that is the issue here and I do not have another adaptor to test it with.I am extremely frustrated as this is the third issue in just two years I have had with this device. This is my first acer product and I have had nothing but problems with it. If anyone knows how I can see what they did to fix it the first time, this would be helpful too.
