Win XP Pro: Keystroke repeat rate resets-- unpredictably

Q: Win XP Pro: Keystroke repeat rate resets-- unpredictably

I have tried a number of search terms here, but don't find this reported anywhere-- so here goes nothing:

The machine: HP Pavillion dv8000 (portable), x86, 512M RAM
OS: WIN XP Pro v.5.1.2600 SP2, build 2600

The issue:

I fire up the machine and go about my business. The system works with my chosen keystroke repeat rate (very high) which correctly works after the machine booted. Fine.

But at SOME point-- and it seems to have something to do with simultaneously having PhotoShop, Firefox, Wordpad and the imagining software from my Fuji digital camera open at the same time as Norton is running a "live update"-- all of a sudden the keystoke repeat rate "sets itself" to "snail's pace." I go to the control panel > keyboard and find that the slider control for the keystoke repeat rate is now all the way over to the left (super slow). I reset it to a fast rate, apply, and the system works normally again.... maybe for weeks, maybe for a few minutes.

I am yet to actually reproduce the conditions that cause this "quirk."

If I reboot the machine while the keystroke repeat rate is "slow" like this, the system comes back up with my "fast" preset.

I doubt this is a "security" issue... but it's certainly ANNOYING, when it happens.

Is there legitimate software that examines such things as keystroke rates, and "makes the determination" that it needs to be reset, in order for the software to run properly, or at its optimum?

Does anyone know WHAT I am dealing with here? Ghosts in the machine?

Thanks in advance!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hey guys! So, I wanted to disconnect 7 of my server's HDDs and leave one connected. I pulled the power and SATA cables, then turned it back on and put the boot CD I wanted to use in. Straight away, I noticed the strange behaviour, and I got no picture.

The computer resets 5 times (I can tell from the sound the CD Drive makes each time the computer resets), then it completely turns itself off. Fans and drives spin down. About a second or two later, it turns itself on again and repeats the process.

I knew disconnecting the drives wouldn't effect the BIOS like this, but I tried connecting all the drives back up so the machine was as it was before anyway. Same problem.

It seems that in the simple process I have bust something, but what could it be? With no BIOS or way to boot into a live CD, I can't tell what's broken. I tried googling my only evidence (the restarting), but found nothing.

Update: It looks like it was the RAM. I've never bust RAM before, but there's a first time for everything! I'll let you know if I get everything working okay again. At the moment, I'm in the BIOS. So it's looking fixed....

A:Solved: Computer soft resets 5 times then hard resets (+repeat)?

Jesus H. C. Christ.

So I tested both RAM sticks to see which one was busted. I put the first one in, and it booted.

I put the second one in, and it booted. WTF.

My new theory? Somehow the RAM had come loose, and I gave it that extra knock out of place when I fiddled with the HDDs. Looks like all they needed was a nudge back in place.

At least, let's hope that's the case, and not that the RAMs working now, but will crash the system when it feels like it!

Hello Rik,

You can find it in the Control Panel (large or small icon view) under the Keyboard icon. Yours may look a little different since this is driver specific, but it should be similar.

Hope this helps,

I use acronis to backup and restore data for our customers computers. Sometimes during the restore, and sometimes errors will pop up when restoring some temp files, not a big deal, just bypass by pressing "i" on the keyboard to ignore. The problem is, I use a KVM and if i'm restoring more than one machine, i am unable to ignore (we usually just stick a screwdriver in the keyboard to hold down the key (very caveman like, I know).

Anyways, I've been trying to find a program to replicate the "i" key being held down, even when I'm not on that screen. I've tried Macros, batch files, and scripts, but I cant seem to find anything that will work. Do you guys have any ideas, I've been working on this for about a month now, and its driving me nuts.

Thanks for looking!

A:Solved: Auto Repeat Keystroke

You could use AutoHotkey and just put send, i in a loop.

Send, i
Sleep, 1000
If X = 1

X := 1

Hitting F1 starts it up and F2 stops it. The sleep 1000 makes it send an i every second.

cant seem to get my computer to boot, i replaced psu. This is after i had replaced mobo and cpu, i had it running on original 500w psu then i left it on for abit unattended and came back to the mouse and keyboard not powered. i reset computer and ever since it has had a boot issue where fans and power come on for 2-3 seconds then it shutsdown and restarts the process.

could i have fried my mobo by underpowering it?
the mobo has atx 12v 2x4 and i only had 2x2 plugged into it when i had it running.

i have no speaker in my case so i dont get any sounds which i might have to go pick one up.

Could you kindly advice as to how can I find out the keyboard repeat delay and repeat rate on Windows XP (Pro)?

The information provided in Control Panel-->Keyboard Properties only states whether the delay is Long or Short and whether the rate is Slow or Fast.

I would like to find out the rates in s/ms in order to carry out KeyStroke Repetition experiment.

Looking forward to your kind reply.

I posted a similar query to this some 14 months ago, but nobody could provide a solution, so I thought I'd have another try, hoping that some of you guys might have solved it in the meantime.

I don't think that it is confined to W2K, since I remember the same phenomenon in W98, but the repeat rate on the keyboard properties, Speed tab slows down of its own accord. I have it set to the fastest it can go and everything is hunky-dory one minute, then the next its in slow motion. I notice it when I keep my finger on the arrow key and the cursor takes its time moving character to character, a bit like a movie dropping frames. My own solution is to have the keyboard properties icon on my task-bar, so that whenever it happens, the Slow-to-Fast repeat rate bar is just one click away, a click on the fast end followed by Apply and everything is back to normal. It has happened twice today, which made me think of my old post and wondered whether anyone has discovered a permanent solution.

A:Repeat Rate

I have a suggested idea...

I have not ever experienced this myself BUT if it were happening to me I would experiment with the following:

Find out what file it is that the shortcut points to. i.e. what exactly it is that controls the keyboard rate. Then change its permissions so that all users and system are all denied access to modify the file. That should work.

In Control Panel - Keyboard, I set the keyboard repeat rate and repeat delay to desired values, but when I reboot my XP Pro SP2, the settings always change back to some strange default. As far as I can tell, these settings are kept in the user database and refreshed when logging in as a user, and are supposed to be saved when logging off. Any clues on how I can get my settings to stick?

First off, this may be a rather peculiar question and a problem most probably haven't come across or thought about. This thought is confirmed by the fact that I've been searching for the answer for a while now, but have been unable to find one (I've been searching for a while).

Anyway, my question is as follows.

When I hook up two keyboards to my computer (either a PS/2 keyboard and a USB keyboard or two USB keyboards, both combinations produce the same effect), and press and hold two (different) keys, one on each keyboard, the repeat rate of both the keys is sped up and becomes less evenly spaced. For example, when I set my key repeat rate to two seconds with FilterKeys, and I press the A key on one keyboard and the B key on the second keyboard, the repeat rate for both keys becomes 0.5-1.5 seconds, instead of 2 seconds (so I mean I get an A every 0.5-1.5 seconds and a B every 0.5-1.5 seconds, I don't mean the total repeat rate is sliced in half, which would seem logical since the input is doubled).

I also tried this on my laptop. The effect (using either a USB keyboard and the laptop's keyboard or two USB keyboards) is even stronger. When holding down two buttons, the repeat rate is sped up greatly, the intervals of repetition nearly vanishing.

So, can anyone tell me why this happens? I am sure the use of solving this problem is limited, but I'd just like to know why my computers exhibit this strange behavior.

A:Key Repeat Rate Sped Up using Two Keyboards

This only happens when you press 2 keys on different keyboards at the same time? or when you attach the 2nd keyboard, but don't press anything, or both?

The problem:  I have my keystroke repeat rate set at about 2/3 of the way to the right on the sliding scale that displays in Control Panel.  But after using the computer for about 5 or 10 minutes, the keystroke repeat rate becomes extremely slow.  I have to keep going into Control Panel to set the repeat rate back to where I want it.  Why does this happen?  And more importantly, of course, is how to I stop it from happening.  It's driving me crazy.  Thank you.

Recently on my main Win XP Pro machine, the keyboard repeat rate keeps dropping to the slowest setting. I have to open Control Panel - Keyboard and move the slider back over to the right.

Saw a couple of old posts about this, but no definitive answer.

I'm guessing that perhaps some program is doing this, but I sure can't figure out which one.

As with most of my computer problems, the MS Knowledge Base is silent on the issue.

I got this problem, my cmd prompt typing rate is very slow.
1. This happened after i have enabled my HyperThreading in my system through some hacking of boot.ini and bios setup,

2. Installed some patches with MS automatic update.

3. And turned off some services in my system.

Now it's like about only 20% of the speed of the previous cmd prompt.

What gives

It has been confirmed that it is due to the hyperthreading, once i have turned it off in the bios, it is back to speed.

Windows XP SP3 problem. My keyboard repeat rate seems slower than it used to be. Fiddling in control panel, moving the slider past halfway doesnt seem to have an influence on the repeat rate.

I'm facing a very weird problem with Windows 10 on my new laptop. Every time I boot up or even wake from hibernate, my keyboard repeat rate gets reset to the slowest setting. I notice this only when I start using word or email.

The weirder thing is, in the keyboard settings window the setting would always be shown as "Fast", but actually it would be slow. To make it fast, I have to drag it to slow and then to fast again.

Hope I have made myself clear. Can you please help with this?

Hello all. I have been annoying with the DIFFERENT key repeating delay and slow repeating rate of the DELETE key on my Yoga 910. I have disabled all the accessibility settings (filter keys, sticky keys, etc.). My keyboard setting is in this picture It seems like, every keystroke except 'DELETE' will have 0.5 sec delay before repeating, while 'DELETE' key will always have 1 sec delay, regardless what the repeat delay is. I wonder why the 'DELETE' key behaves differently from the other keys. How can I make DELETE key consistent with the others? I have uploaded a video. You will find the input key and backspace are fast and the delay is shorter than delete.

Hi, I have a Lenovo Y70, and every day I go to work on it, the cursor blink has reset to the slowest settings...so every day (often more than once a day) I have to go to the control panel, select "change cursor blink rate" and hit OK to the settings (note: the settings always show they are selected to correct position, but I have to hit OK to initiate them again). As mentioned above, I have to usually do this multiple times a day. I have thoroughly tested the computer for viruses, and it appears clean. This has been very annoying and I was hoping someone in the community knows of a way to resolve this issue. Please let me know if you have an answer. Thanks,Nate

Hey there.

Recently I have upgraded to Windows 10.

I am experiencing an issue where sometimes when I plug in my headphones, there will be no audio coming from them even when Im playing music on the computer.

The music always plays fine from the speakers.
The music always plays fine from headphones when I'm using a USB DAC.
The music always played fine in Windows 8.1 before this through headphones..
The music always plays fine in Linux, my dual boot along side Windows 10.

My headphones for sure work as all my other devices and OSes are fine with it.
My hardware is fine as everything work(s/ed) fine for Linux and Windows 8.1.
My computer always recognizes the headphones when I plug them in, but won't always play audio through them.

Restarting the computer does not always fix the issue, but rebooting into Linux then back into Windows 10 always fixes the issue.

I have tried 3 different sets of audio drivers; Windows 8.1, Windows 10 and Windows Generic Drivers for my device (Eurocom M4). The problem persists in all of them.

I have updated my BIOS to a Windows 10 supported one my manufacturer provided. It didn't help.

It isn't malware for sure as this has been happening since the OS was newly installed.

It persists with all headphones, not just one pair.

Anyone have any possible idea how to fix this issue? I've tried everything I could.

Click the Settings tab at the top, and then in the left column, select Detections and Protections, and if not already checked place a checkmark in the selection box for Scan for rootkits.
Click the Scan tab at the top of the program window, select Threat Scan and click the Scan Now button.
If you receive a message that updates are available, click the Update Now button (the update will be downloaded, installed, and the scan will start).
The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
If potential threats are detected, ensure that Quarantine is selected as the Action for all the listed items, and click the Apply Actions button.
While still on the Scan tab, click the link for View detailed log, and in the window that opens click the Export button, select Text file (*.txt), and save the log to your Desktop.

Less than 2 weeks after the end of my 1-year warranty, my Lenovo Yoga 920 crashed. I've used Lenovo products for years and have recommended the Yoga 920 specifically to many of my coworkers, so when I experienced a hard crash (no blue screen, just a stuck image on screen) I assumed it was something Windows/Driver related. For the past two weeks I've been on a journey to try and resolve the issue but haven't had much luck. Below is a history of what I've experienced and what I've tried:Friday, August 2nd - Computer was plugged in and on, but not being used, when I found it unresponsive. I tried turning it back on and within 1-2 minutes of booting up, it would crash again. Any image on screen would remain on screen (sometimes with visual artifacts, sometimes without) and any music that was playing would be suspended indefinitely until I hard powered off.Booting the machine in Safe Mode would allow me to use the machine for any period of time - the 1-2 minutes before crash was only experienced under normal boot upSaturday-Wednesdays - No issuesWhatever was causing my crashes all Friday (until late in the night) was not causing it for the next several days. I used this time to back up my filesI used this time to verify I was on the latest version of Windows, that my drivers were up to date, and that neither Lenovo Bridge or Lenovo Diagnostics Windows found any errors with the machine.Wednesday, August 6th - Computer was plugged in and on, but not being used, and same as before, i... So if my router is reporting my max line rate is 82 mbit/s but the actual rate getting to the router is 55 mbit/s then what does this suggest ?

An Open Reach engineer did visit to check everything was where it should be both at my home and at the street cabinet. Resulting in moving the router next to the socket where the line comes in to the house, initially the speed was getting around 65mbit/s after he had organised things better.

He did say though the connection may go slower or faster over 10 days, its been a month now.

My ISP is Sky and I am subscribed to Fibre Pro (the best they offer) - their estimate to my house was 70mbit/s.

Since then the highest rate I've seen is 59mbit down and 19mbit up.

So since I've subscribed to the highest speeds Sky will offer me I doubt I'm getting capped.

The internet from outside has been cutting off each sometime around 9pm, maybe theres a bad line somewhere between my house and the cabinet ?

What do you guys think ? What are some possible ideas what's going on ?

A:Router reports much higher max rate than data rate

Shared line problems. It's pretty rare for you to actually get the speed advertised. There's a lot that goes into an internet connection, like the link speed for the devices. Applications that monitor, or check traffic can of course slow it down. But the most common cause is a shared line. For example:

You and 12 of your neighbors order the 100mbit service. Your ISP uses a 1Gbit line for all of you. You can get 100Mbits, as long as 2 of your neighbors aren't using it at all, even if the others are using up all of their speed. But if all 12 are on at the same time, it balances, and some people get a drop in speed.

It's all pretty standard practice with ISPs. As far as the dropoff at 9PM, that's usually caused by a gateway/modem reset. That's when they renew their IP lease. Some even do a full power cycle as well. Check your modem/gatway logs at that time to see if it shows any information about reconnecting (usually the easiest way to tell is the time is incredibly wrong until it gets the correct time from the ISP)

Maybe it's different in the UK for the shared line. Maybe there's not a questionable cloud of "Up to 100MBits!!!***" there with some bullet points saying you won't always get it. But almost every time here, that's the case.

Hi, To have maximum performance of the monitor, i tried to change the refresh rate of monitor from 60 to 75 hertz. But on going to the advance menu and monitor, there is no hertz to select, it is set to use hardware default settings. thereis no drop down menu showing the hertz. How to have thoses hertz.
I remember seeing those hertz sometimes back. My OS is window 7 ultimate

A:I could not change the refresh rate of monitor as no rate is there

Could i expect the reply. Why refresh rate is absent

I have been trying some different settings and my current download will stay the same but the max rate would increase which I never get, I increased the max rate from 84 to 90 mbit/s but my current just always stays at 54mbit/s in return my current upload speed does lower from 19 to 15mbit/s.

Default Router Settings

Custom SNR Settings
My router is next to the where the line comes in to the house with a short cable. The cable is a standard cheap one, so I tried a shielded twisted (rj11) cable (same length) and it actually made my speeds lower!

So I went back to the cheap flat cable.

My isp isnt capping me because their estimates were 70mbit/s and Im on their best service.
Dont know if this helps? (with custom settings)

From looking at my old speedtest results, I had 16 ping with my old ADSL connection.
Now with my new Fibre connection I get pings of 25 or 27.

Shouldn't fibre get a faster ping ?

A:Tuning SNR only increases "Max" rate but NOT current rate

so I tried a shielded twisted (rj11) cable (same length) and it actually made my speeds lower!

rj11 is a phone jack, not a twisted pair cable (shielded or not).

You are not going to be able to increase your speed, since that's controlled by your ISP or dependent on equipment on their side of the demarcation point. On your end you have everything needed to get higher speed, i.e. an Ethernet cable and NIC that obviously both support at least 100Mbps.

You may be able to get max speed once at 3:00am on a full moon during a leap year

Keystroke lag problem:  My HP laptop running WIN7 intermittantly has keystroke lag problems, i.e., i type a letter and it will not show/be visible for a few seconds.  This problem always happens when I can hear, what I assume is,  the hard drive whirling.  I've looked at Task Manager during this problem period and nothing jumps out at me.  When the hard drive goes quiet, the delayed keystroke problem goes away.
I've read several past posts regarding this problem, but given my limited knowledge base, I'm not able to figure out a solution.   I've run virus, malware scans, nothing seems to help.  Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Have you tried defragmenting the hard drive and cleaning it using CCleaner?

If she can remember a particular word or phrase she typed in you may be able to find it by doing a file search and clicking on the advanced options.

My website that I administer has been hacked and redirects to a .ru website and it seems that the access is gained by a password grabbing virus on my personal computer. I have AVG free edition running as well as windows defender and firewall. Nothing picked up the program. I ran malawarebytes which found one file but did not seem to find the cause. I then ran combofix and rootrepeal and am looking for information about interpreting the logs. Attached is the rootreal log I also have the combofix log if requested. Thanks, Micah
