Can DELL laptops running xp be upgraded to windows 8?

Q: Can DELL laptops running xp be upgraded to windows 8?

I have a Dell Vostro 1510 laptop running xp?
Can it be upgraded to windows 8?
Where do I go for advice on this

Preferred Solution: Can DELL laptops running xp be upgraded to windows 8?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Just bought an Inspiron 5759 from Dell Canada.
Touchpad is very squirrelly - move around and it randomly perceives a click hence starts moving or invoking stuff.  Try to click left or right button (bottom left or right of touchpad) and the cursor moves so I can click on wrong thing easily.  Looked for Touchpad settings under Control Panel Mouse.  Nothing there specific to touchpad - just generic mouse settings.  Looked in Device Manager - Mouse and Pointing Devices - see HIID compliant mouse and PS2 compatible mouse.   Driver for either is from Microsoft dated 2006.
Ok - load newest driver from dell.com.  Claims it installs ok - wrong.  The Dev Mgr shows same Microsoft drivers.  Manually force driver to Synaptics - Dell TouchPad.  Looks like it succeeds.  Now, Dev Mgr shows two mouse devices: Dell Touchpad and PS2 Compatible mouse.  Try control panel - Mouse.  Now I see a Dell Touchpad tab but the only field - Change Dell Touchpad settings - does nothing.
Spent 6 hours trying to get help from Dell Support - worst experience with any support organisation (other than HP who managed to toast a notebook via remote control while trying to install a printer driver - never did work.)  Absolutely no improvement in situation.  Four times put on hold and line drops.  Considering strongly returning the notebook.
Went to BestBuy and looked at 8 Inspiron  and XPS computers on demo.  Not a sin... Read more

A:Inspiron and XPS laptops running Windows 10 cannot install Dell/Synaptics Touchpad driver

With Win 10, touchpad drivers are found in the Win 10 Settings, selected in the Start Menu. In addition, many newer laptops are using a Precision touchpad, a Microsoft inspired pad. The driver is incorporated in Windows itself, and a regular driver will not work. This is why you don't see anything in the "old" Windows Control Panel app or in the Device Manager.

Using a Dell 9020 MT.
I noticed when I checked out the hardware there is no partition on the C drive that is set aside for a factory reset if/when Windows or something needs to be reset.

I have upgrade from Windows 7 professional to Windows 10 professional.
I have updated all the drivers etc, I have the system where I would want it if it needs to be reset.
What should I do to make a recovery option if/when it is needed.
I have also downloaded : dell-usb-recovery-tool_wjfv2_win_2.0.2.0_a00
I also have a 32GB USB 2.0 drive ready to go.
Thanks in advance for all the input.

In June 2016 our company bought Inspiron 5759. I used it at office, we have air conditioning, nothing that could cause overheating or other problems. In the end of July 17 laptop just turned off and didnt react on any actions. I brought to service center and they told it's the hub located on the same board with CPU. The only way to fix it is to replace the whole board which costs around 600 USD because there's CPU Core i7 in it. I was given another laptop Inspiron 5558 which was not used since winter of 2017 because it had problems with WiFi. I tried to connect it with LAN cable and discovered that LAN is not working, in fact there's no LAN adapter in device manager. Service center said today that's the same problem - but this time hub is not completely broken, it's just doesnt see LAN adapter and periodically shuts down WiFi. The technician told that this is a frequent problem with Inspirons and Dell knows about it but doesnt recall laptops or extend warranty on this spare part. I asked when second laptop got the wifi issues - it started at the beginning of 2017 and warranty ended in December 2016. Again just 1-2 months.

So, it looks very strange that Dell laptops break right after ending of warranty with same problem, and we can't just change the hub, we need to buy a new board which includes CPU for 600 USD.

I need some help in connecting my two laptops together using my home wifi network.
I have tried to find a tutorial on how to do this but I couldn't find a good one.

Could anyone explain how to connect two win 7 computers using wifi, or point me in the direction of a proper walk trough.

Also is it possible to have an ongoing sync between two computers? My ideal situation would be to have two identically (content wise) computers whom both synced up to a external hard drive connected to one of those computers. So e.g. every time a picture was added to the picture folder on one computer the picture would be synced to the hard drive and then to computer nr 2 automatically.
Is anything like this possible?

Thank you

A:Connecting two laptops running Windows 7?

I can't really think of a way to do it unless they were connected and synced to a server. You can always open explorer and click Network. From there you should be able to access the files on another computer. I do this for using my dads printer and getting pictures off his computer to put on Facebook.

Last week I had a Win XP desktop computer. I use a Netgear WGR614 V6 router. I have fiber to the house and use a Cat5e Ethernet cable to connect the router to the wall jack and Cat5e from the router to the XP computer. I also used Wi-Fi to connect my Win7 x64 new laptop and an older XP laptop to the Internet. Everyone was happy and all worked well!

I set-up a new Dell Win7 x64 desktop computer (it currently connects to the Internet just fine).

During the period I was setting up the new Win7 desktop I had both the XP desktop unit AND the new Win7 desktop connected to the router via Ethernet cables (at that time both laptops could connect to the Internet). After I had transferred the XP files to the Win 7 computer I just shut down the XP computer and removed the Ethernet cable linking the XP computer and the router - the new Win7 computer still connected to the Internet fine (as it still does today).

I made 2 changes to the router:
1) I had the XP desktop connected to Port 3 on the back of the router and had the Win7 x64 desktop connected to Port 2 on the router.
2) I used Cat5e cable on the XP desktop and used a Cat 6 cable to connect the new Win7 desktop unit to the router.

Problem - both laptops see my router name but neither laptop can connect - even ran the troubleshooting routine (no help).

Could simply using Cat6 cable be causing a problem (Win7 desktop connects fine via the cable, laptops can not connect via Wi-Fi)? Surely just changing the port I connect the desk... Read more

After a long haul fixing the Disconnecting and reconnecting bug well reported here and elsewhere now I find that sometimes connecting a 4 or 6 Terabyte external drive to a powered up laptop can cause severe drive corruption which running Windows Check drive
for errors can not fix.
I have to leave the laptops powered up so as not to loose the playlist the client was running before my update.
The drive controllers are all those supplied by ICY BOX of Germany at one end and various makes of Laptops at the other, mostly Acer but some Sony, Asus and MSI makes and one Toshiba.   This problem can happen on any of them.   The external drive
boxes are always powered down when plugged in and whole directory's containing many thousands of OTS DJ PRO media files can just 'vanish' never to be seen again.
This is happening to only about 2% of the drives in the fleet and it tends to be the same drives each time, but they re partition and format as normal and a Checkdisk surface scan has found nothing wrong.   The names of the drives are similar taking
the format of iMS Media Disc 36 where 36 is a unique number between 1 and 42.
These media drives are replaced once a month with updated ones and I run an International Music Services company distributing licensed for playback in Public HD Music Video/Karaoke and Audio to Bars, Clubs, Hotels and other public venues around the World.

Because of dell mini netbook having no disc drive, chose to reformat/upgrade using I1386 folder containing Winnt32.exe to execute. Upgrade seemed to complete in full up until it was to reboot and then loop began with "Please wait..." and never restarted. Had to perform a hard boot. Then at login, a window request to activate windows came up with the option yes or no. Tried both options with same result... Nothing happens. Will not allow you to log on or option to activate. Used F8 (no F11 on keyboard) to start up in safe mode and system does allow you to log on then with no activation requirement . But as soon as you try to start up in normal mode, activation window pops up every time, again with no setup to follow. Any ideas? Thanks in advance for any help in getting this resolved.

I have a 15 month old Dell Optiplex 990 (Core i7 2600 @ 3.4GHZ; 16GB DDR3 Crucial RAM (4 x 4GB); 1TB WDD HDD; 2 x Radeon 6450 Graphics dribing 2 x HP LP3065 displays at 2560 x 1600). Ran fine in Win 7 HP. Upgraded two weeks ago to Win 8 Pro and I get (a) video driver crash/restart after about 20 minutes then intermittently and (b) after about 30 minutes I loose connection to the Internet, even though the connection wizard indicates it's still up.

I have updated the AMD video drivers to the latest release (but not the newest beta) and reinstalled Catalyst control center; updated the System BIOS to A16; removed everything (HW & SW) that fails the compatibility test; swapped the memory around and tried it with only 8GB; run the diagnostics on the system, memory & HDD (no errors reported); Nothing has fixed the problem and I am about out of ideas. I am considering replacing the graphics cards with something from nVidia as well as installing new RAM.

Am I missing anything? Has anyone seen anything like this?

Might have to revert to Windows 7. At least I have a backup of the pre-installed configuration......

will my Dell dimension E520 desktop PC upgrade to Windows 10 from windows 7 without major problems? Dell do not recommend it, but I have heard that some early (2007 build) PCs can upgrade without dramas. Has anybody upgraded this series of Dell PCs?

A:Dell dimension E520 desktop, can it be upgraded to windows 10?

After a Google search I've found someone to be running Windows 10 on the same machine as you. They've said it runs reliably. Generally if your PC can run Windows 7 it can run Windows 10.

You can upgrade to Windows 10 easily by using the upgrade installer here: https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/software-download/windows10

After waiting several days for the Windows 10 notification app to upgrade my Dell XPS 8300 and reading the gloomy news on the Dell forums on which Dell systems had been tested for windows 10,  I decided to proceed with to proceed with a manual upgrade. My system is a Dell XPS 8300 with 16GB memory, an AMD Radeon HD 6800 graphics card and a 2 TB hard disk. I use graphic drivers obtained directly from AMD.
The Windows 10 app had indicated no issues with my system so I decided to proceed knowing there was a change I might have to reinstall my old OS if it failed. Downloading and installing the OS took about 90 minutes and I have been trying different applications (MMOs, ms office, browsers, etc) the last several hours with out any major issues other than some of the Itune folders which had permission issues.
Other people have reported problems upgrading XPS 8300 to WIndows 10. I suspect the problems are due to specific drivers/devices in the systems. It would have been nice if Dell told us the specific devices with issues instead of specific computer systems.
But then perhaps they felt that would be overload.

A:Dell Untested XPS 8300 upgraded to Windows 10 - So Far So Good

System continues to be stable with Windows 10. The learning curve from Windows 7 to Windows 10 is easy. I'm also starting to like the tiles.
I'm haven't been impressed with the the new mail app and am migrating from WLM to Thunderbird as well as from pop to imap mail servers.I don't have a feel for system performance  yet. It's not worse but it isn't significantly better either. 3D Graphics applications are performing ok, but AMD has a new driver update, I'll try later today.
As I said before. So far, so good.

I have a Dell XPS 15 L502X - Upgraded to Windows 10 (64). I  seem to have lost the headphone utility that asks what was Plugged-In when you plug in the headphone. This model has the Sound Blaster X-FI MB Sound Card that supports 5.1 audio. There are 3-jacks. Originally, when plugging something in to those jacks it would ask you if you are plugging in a headphone, Left Front Speaker, Center Front Speaker, Right Front Speaker, Rear Right Speaker, Left Front Speaker, or Subwoofer. It was working until I performed a 5th Windows 10 Reset of the laptop. Now, when I plug in something it never asks me. It seems I've lost the ability to choose what is plugged in, my headphone, or the three plugs from my 5.1 speakers.
Any help is greatly appreciated to get this lost utility or program back. Thanks in advance.

Insirion 8200

When turned on it says that the primary disc not found. Then it goes straight to a warning screen telling you to go to setup. Looking at bios set up, the HD and optical drives are "not installed". Through Dell's chat line they said that both the HD and cd unit were defective. I could see the HD , but the CD too? They said that a operating system has to be noticed in order for the computer to work. Without a HD wouldn't the machine go to a doss prompt anyway? I tried that by removing the HD

Dell wants $168 for a HD which is nuts because online I can get one much less. My question is about the CD unit. Has anyone ever seen those go too

A:who knows their Dell Laptops?

The laptop could never go to a "DOS prompt" without the HDD, as to do so would mean that it would have DOS (not the case with XP) and if it had DOS, it resides on the HDD anyway.

Optical drives are not always shown (detected) in BIOS, but the BIOS boot screen should indicate their detection at boot time.

A faulty HDD electronics would prevent it being seen, but a fault on the Dell motherboard IDE would prevent both from being seen.

If they all had the same Windows version pre-installed and you can still read all the COA Windows Product Keys then all you need is a legitimate copy of that version of XP installation CD. Good luck finding one.

If they are all the exact same model then a set of Recovery CDs should work (if such was even provided and still available from Dell or somewhere).

Hello. I run a Win98 Gateway 366mHz with Celereon chip, and recently upgraded from 64 MB to 256 MB. The ram is installed correctly, as the system displays the correct amount at startup and in the My Computer properties screen; however, the computer appears to be running slower.

The problem is most noticeable when I'm playing MP3s. If I'm running Internet Explorer and Winamp at the same time, songs will start skipping everytime I click on a link. This happens regardless of which audio program or web browser that I use.

I've updated the drivers on my system, have run VirusScan and ScanDisk, and freed up a lot of space on my hard drive with my no improvement. Any other ideas on how I can solve this problem? Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks.

Anyone have experience with "refurbished" products from Dell? Particularly laptops? I have a friend that would like to get a laptop but has a pretty limited budget.

It seems like they have some good deals but I wonder about reliability.

A:Dell Refurbished Laptops

I find the refurb Dell to be a far superior buy than new. When you buy new you are often the first person to ever turn on the system, a refurb has been turned on and failed so it is sent back for extensive testing not done to a new system, after testing to make sure it works properly it is now sold at a good discount.

The refurb looks like new and has exactly the same warranty it just cost less. The only area where it is not a better deal is if you need some specific feature, you cannot order them built with extra parts beyond a few.

Dell gets so many refurbs that the best method for buying one is to know what you want ahead of time and what you are willing to pay for it, they have new systems come up for sale several times a day so if you have the time and know what you need it can be a very satisfactory system purchase.

In the last 2 weeks I have installed over 10 Dell laptops with Vista Home basic/Home premium. I have encountered these 2 specific problems on most of them!.

1 - They all had a 60 day trial of Office 2007. Having entered the License Key and registered the product everytime I open an Office application from the Start Menu it trys to reinstall again. If I use the Dell Dock it does not happen.

2 - On most occasions when trying to open the control panel it does not respond forcing Windows Explorer to restart.

I have not had these problems on other makes.

Has anybody else come accross these problems?

A:Dell Laptops and Vista

Does registering the product = Office validation with Microsoft Genuine Advantage?

Do the events preceding the Windows Explorer restart process include the fading white background, small blue circle spinning and "Not Responding..."? If so look at 3rd party firewall/ a-v products. Usually the firewall is the cause.

All these symptoms - but only on Dell products?

Hi, i asked what i need to ask for at the Title
here it again "Is there a Win7 VER. especially for Dell Laptops or PCs"

A:Is there a Win7 VER. especially for Dell Laptops or PCs

There is, but you need to buy it from Dell.

When Dell manufacture a new computer they ship it with Dell Datasafe Backup software and as with most manufacturer's expect you to burn a set of recovery discs.

However, if you pay extra they will ship a windows DVD and driver DVD with a new computer.

My advice would be to contact Dell to see if they will sell you what you're after.

I want to upgrade the stock 128 GB SSD to a 250GB Samsung Evo 960 PCIe NVMe SSD? Is it possible? Has anyone else done this and was able to get full speeds of the SSD without any issues?

A:Can the Dell XPS 13 9360 SSD be upgraded ?

The 128G drive is SATA -- the larger capacity ones are NVMe.  Yes, you can upgrade the drive to the Evo version.  You do NOT want the Pro version for a notebook like this -- it uses too much power and will produce too much heat as a result.  There's also no point in a high-performance Pro version, as the system isn't designed with 4-lane PCIe access for the NVMe drive (for that you need a large mobile workstation or gaming portable, or a desktop system).

The CPU cannot be upgraded.  It's soldered to the system board -- and while you can replace the board, there is no option for anything other than a seventh-generation CPU.  Further, the cost (Figure $400+) and the loss of your warranty mean that if you're not happy with the system, you're better off returning the system and either waiting for the eighth-generation version (figure sometime in late Spring or early Summer at earliest) or buying an i7-7th generation equipped 9560 now.

I have a pretty new laptop, 2.13 ghz AMD 2800+ processor. On the system properties screen it says it is only a 508 mhz processor, and yet in safe mode it says it is running at 2.13 ghz. I called the manufacturer and they said it runs at 508 mhz to preserve power. I am wondering if there is a way to change this and make the processor move faster... I have ordered some new ram for the machine as well, but I would like to see the processor work at its full potential. Any response is appreciated. Thanks!

I start this thread although I know there is another thread running about the end of support to WinXP, because I wish addressing a very specific point and avoiding to get lost in a lot of general discussions about the end of support to WinXP.
The specific problem is this one.
We have several WinXP machines that are mainly used for piloting scientific instruments.  Three problems here:
1. the corresponding softwares are very specific and most of them run only on "real" WinXP (i.e. they do not work on Win7 even under WinXP compatibility mode) because they use specific instructions that are not recognized in Win7 AND/OR need specific drivers that cannot be installed under Win7 (compatibility issues).  For some of these softwares, the vendor may offer an upgrade, but the cost is often VERY high (we often speak about 1,000 to 5,000 euros !) because those softwares are often "custom-built". Also, sometimes the software has been discontinued and the company simply proposes a migration to their new software, but this requires an upgrade of the instrument, which makes the whole cost even more prohibitive.
2. Many of these machines serve only to pilot the instrument and, therefore, are not affected by the "software obesity syndrome" that cripples other machines over time (i.e. difficulties for handling more and more complex and obese programs).  Apart from the specific software that pilot the instrument, all we often need is just an EXCEL program (and EXCEL 97 will w... A:What to do with machines running WinXP that CANNOT be upgraded to Win7 or later

I've also been setting up some systems for the same reasons you have outlined above. Have gone the route of an isolated private network and a machine running a dedicated firewall, with only the required servers and software vendors allowed through, all other network access blocked...
We have kept some machines running independently (ones that require serial connection to instruments), and have virtualized most others on a VMSphere cluster.
Running M0n0wall as the firewall. Could easily be set up on a low power machine for a small isolated network though, very cheaply.
You don't need a Wizard to set it up either, pretty straight forward GUI.

i had a radeon x700 pro(laugh if you must)

and i recently upgraded to a radeon 2600 pro hd

now all of my games are running slower

i uninstalled all of my drivers for the x700 and installed all the new ones for the 2600
i cant seem to make my games run on directx 10, while the 2600 is supposed to be compatible
yes i downloaded and installed it, i just dont know how to make the games change to using 10

plus, the 2600 pro is running my games such as call of duty 4 and counter strike source much slower than before,
with call of duty, with the x700, it run good
with the 2600 even on very bad settings its uplayable with lag

im using catalyst control center, and i have it set to use the games setting

A:Upgraded video card running worse than old

huh, no need for us to laugh at the X700 look at my specs, i run most my games full at 1600x1200. i am actually going to purchase a HD2600 tomorrow i hope we see what is wrong with this.

The only solution i can offer are the latest drivers from ATI site. as for the games running DX10 only DX10 games will run in DX10 and under Vista.

If you have Vista and the HD2600 and say a DX7 game it will run in DX7. Even with DX10 installed.

You can google for the Alky project if you want DX10 in XP, or at least game compatibilty.

This is my first post on the tech spot....SO HELLO EVERYONE!!!! Like i said, this is my first post and really wasn't excatly sure where to put it. I figured this is a good a spot as any!!! OK at the risk of being called "YOU FOOL"! I'll come right out with it. I was sneakin this chick into my room and it was dark. I had my laptop plugged in across the room, the chick snags my laptop cord with her foot and yanks my laptop. Get up to use my laptop the next day and something's shorted out. I say shorted out because I've done some searching online with the problem i was having (power pack light goes out when plugged into laptop). So i go through the steps on possibly locating the short which was, pull off piece by piece from the laptop, which goes something like this....first cdrw, memory,HD and so on till I'm down to the laptop frame, which still the power up light turns off as soon as its plugged in. So before I go out and buy another mother board W/O CPU and RAM, i want to make sure of a couple things....Is this a common problem with maybe power jack needs to be resoldered or some other easy fix, and if I do buy a motherboard will my CPU work in the same D600 motherboard. What I'm getting at is swapping CPU a routine type thing? Also should I move this post to a heading that has more traffic?

I have a Dell Inspiron 6400 and I believe the HD has went bad....or at least I think it has. I totally washed the HD clean with a program call Boot and Nuke. The reason for doing so was that the computer was having problem in all sorts of areas. Me being a worry wart, thought it was infected with a virus.

So anyway after wiping it clean I tried to install Vista. Before it will install it asks "Where do you want to install Windows?", and it gave me two options...Disk 0 Partition 2 or Disk or Partition 3 MediaDirect. When I highlight Disk 0 Partition 2 for the install location a message appears at the bottom of the screen saying..."The disk may fail soon. If other hard disks are available, install Windows to another location". Well I have no other locations so I tried it on this disk and it would only get to 2% on the Expanding files step. But instead of getting HD error message I get the following message...."Windows cannot install required files. The files does not exist. Make sure all files required for installtion are available, and restart the installation. Error code 0x80070003". I tried this 4 times, all with the same result.

So now I'm really confused as to what the problem is. Is the HD bad? Is the the Vista disk missing files? or is it both. If it is the HD, do I have to use a Dell HD or can I just go to Best Buy and purchase one there?

Any/all help would be greatly apperciated.

I'm wondering is Dell latitude any good. I have seen lots and lots of refurbished Dell latitude. What are your thoughts on Dell latitude?

A:Is Dell latitude laptops any good?

It depends on what you will be using them for. If it's just for surfing the web and minor web surfing it should be ok (depending on the specs of each Dell Latitude computer).
