Bright spot the size of cursor on Spectre X360 screen

Q: Bright spot the size of cursor on Spectre X360 screen

Hi, I've had my Spectre x360 for two months now and noticed this just recently. The reason I noticed was that it was the first time I had a completely white screen, and the defect became very apparent. Spot stays stationary on screen and is most apparent with white or grey backgrounds, and is not very noticeable on blacks. The machine has been handled very delicately and not transported so it's certainly not damage. Will HP replace the unit for me? This is the second Spectre X360 I've had, first had WiFi and track pad problems and I am beginning to get quite frustrated.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have the same issue, has a solution been found? I have a rather large mark, like the edges of a rounded square of around 5 cm high to the left of the centre of the screen, where the HP logo starts on the back. It looks like there is something behind the screen shimmering through...I've been having various issues since I've had the laptop, one of them being that it is crooked, another is that on start-up, it'll flash some sort of static lines (like a screen/graphics malfunction) for a second or so before going to Windows. For a while it also flashed these lines at random while I was working, but I suspect that may have been a driver issue. On the whole, I'm rather happy with the laptop, but the different issues are very worrying, I don't trust that it will last very long, especially because there seem to be issues with the build quality. For a laptop this expensive, I had expected much better, especially since my HP Pavilion dm1, which was only 400? or so, lasted me a solid 4 yeard and never had any build issues whatsoever...

I am encounteringa problem with the screen of my HP Spectre x360. I have a few very small, white "bright" spots on my screen that show up especially badly on all white screens. I first notice them within the first few weeks of having my new laptop, but because of school I could ill-afford to send it in or spend any time trying to get any customer service. The laptop is great, but these marks are annoying and are unimpressive given the amount paid for a "top-end" laptop. I was told by an HP Technical Support technician that fixing such marks would not be covered by warranty as they would be "accidental damage", but the hinges on the Spectre are covered by warranty. I found this curious as both work together to make the "2-in-1" tablet-laptop functionality. I've hardly even used the touchscreen and always been very delicate with the laptop. Additionally, it was suggested that the pressure must have been applied from the back of the laptop, which is curious as one of the selling features is that it has a solid aluminum shell (and there are no visible marks of any kind on the back). Calling this accidental damage is a pretty terrible way of trying to skirt standing behind your products: it is a touchscreen computer, the touchscreen should not be damaged from occasional use. I have a touchscreen phone that I am constantly pressing and in 3 years have never had a similar mark. I got this with my Spectre 1 month in from almost never touching it (and if I was, it ... Hi there, Few days ago, I bought the Spectre x360 special edition with Intel Core i5-6200U, Intel HD Graphics 520, 8GB RAM, 256 GB SSD, FHD screen. I found that the lowest brightness setting of the laptop to be too bright, blidingly so. This is especially apparent when I compared my laptop screen to other spectre x360's at John Lewis and Curry, where their lowest brightness level is a lot lower, and the maximum brigtness appear to be the same (I can still change the brightness level of the screen, but not to any level where you would call it dim). I have already installed all updates including BIOS, deleted and reinstalled intel graphics drivers, and even reseted windows, but nothing has changed. Does anyone else have this problem and have solution to it? It seems the high brightness level is heavily affecting latop's battery life, as usually, I can only get 5 to 6 hours from it, a lot less than what reviewers and other users reportedly get

The pictures show it. Some days the area on the right on is dark, sometimes it is bright.  The second issue is that the screen won't always come on as bright as it should. This always happens when the computer has gone to sleep, and when I try to wake it the brightness looks turned all the way down, even though the computer thinks it is at 100% brightness.

I have a Thinkpad Yoga 12, and on the display, a small bright spot develops when the device is on long enough. It only seems to be easily visible on lighter colors and webpages, midtones and dark colors/blacks doesn't show it. When the device is first booted, nothing appears on the display and everything looks uniform, but gradually, a light spot develops. From seeing previous forum posts about light spots, they say it's caused either through faults in the display, pressure, impact, or heat, and judging by how it takes a few minutes for the spot to form, I'd imagine it comes from heat or something under the display(?)If the device is out of warranty, is there any way of fixing this?

Hello everyone, this is my first message here, and by the way, I'd like to apologize for my poor english ;] Yesterday I have noticed a problem with the display in my X220 (type 4290-W1B). There is a small, white spot (about 1 mm diameter), clearly visible on the screen. It doesn't look like a normal bad pixel, but like a problem with the background light, or something. It is not visible when black color is displayed. The laptop was bought about 3 months ago and everything was OK until yesterday.I have attached some pictures of this dot, but it is difficult to capture it with the camera (it is much more visible in real). I have marked the spot (it is in the middle of the circle). The pics are in high resolution so you can zoom in.  What should I do now? I have heard , that the Lenovo bad pixel policy is 3 bad pixel per display.. Maybe some of you have noticed such problem already? Thanks a lot. Pictures:http://led.pwr.wroc.pl/aikon/pix_1.jpghttp://led.pwr.wroc.pl/aikon/pix_2.jpghttp://led.pwr.wroc.pl/aikon/pix_3.jpghttp://led.pwr.wroc.pl/aikon/pix_4.jpghttp://led.pwr.wroc.pl/aikon/pix_5.jpg

Believe I have the same thing. Don't know exactly for how long now, but I have been noticing them for a while now. Not visible on just black background, but on pretty much anything else. Most visible on white backgrounds. It appears as if these white spots are behind the pixel layer if that makes any sense. And there is more than one (I count three) of these areas on my screen and they all have a different shape and intesity. Best regards,Gundy

Hi! Id consider myself very experienced in matters like this but i am so stuck its not even funny.

The issue is that my screen will go dim after switching users or switching users and switching back, its not a set pastern and doesn't happen every time. so i havnt been able to reproduce the issue, however i have had it happen to more then one of my computers and on more then one installation of windows 7 (and windows 2008R2 in one instance).

Ruling out basicly any hardware issue is that my cursor always remains bright and sometimes switching/logout/login will resolve the issue on one account or the other account (no patern)

Decreasing the chances of a driver issue is that i have had this problem on 2 systems with different brand graphics over the course of 2 and 3 windows installations respectively all with multiple driver updates and re installations.

Ruling out a connection to UAC is that i have UAC totaly disabled on both machines

Heres the rub, i might be doing this to myself... but i cant just except that. instead of having my screen lock after a certain time frame, i use a special screen saver that 'runs a program'. the program ive chosen is "tsdiscon.exe", the executable used to invoke a 'switch user'.

when theses 2 computers are left unattended i need the next user to see the user selection screen, ive had too many issues with people not knowing to hit the "switch user" button on the lock screen.

I have a 2014 era Lenovo X1 Carbon (20A7 -- not sure if it's 2nd or 3rd generation -- it's the one with the touchbar along the top of the keyboard)I get a number of bright white spots on my display. I had the screen replaced and this fixed the problem, but only temporarily. The spots came back exactly as before. Today, the IBM tech came in to fix the touchpad and I had him look at the display a second time. He removed the screen from the laptop lid to see if something was pressing against the display -- which would explain why two different displays would exhibit the same problem over time. Behind the screen is what looks to be an antenna that runs diagonally from about an inch down from upper left to the lower right corner. Sure enough, the white spots are appearing along this diagonal. When I run my finger across the antenna, I felt it was a bit lumpy in the area of the white spots with some speck of debris exactly behind where the brightest spot is. This makes me wonder if the irregularity in the antenna installation, as subtle as it is, is causing the backlight to become damaged over time.Lenovo seem inclined to just replace the display, but this doesn't seem to be the complete remedy. The mis-installation of the antenna in the backlid is the root cause of the problem

I have the same problem. It began with to bright spots in the lower part of the panel, one in the left and one in the right corner. They came from one day to the other; now, a few days later, two, larger, non-circular blothes have emerged in the centre-left of the screen. The PC is not even a month old.

I did the pixel test mentioned - and it does not appear to be faulty pixels; the blotches remain visible with all colours, except for black, which is basically all the pixels turned off. The shape and size of the blotches also point to something else than pixel error.

Any idea what this might be? It is certainly getting worse by the day.

Thanks.

But later on he said I should call hp and they will direct him about the next step. What should I do to get it replaced? As I haven't used it at all and don't want a part to be replaced only.

Hi,this is my second thread about an issue with my Spectre x360, only 3 months old.I send it to repair to HP the first time on 8th november 2016, and I had it back on 12 december 2016.The previous problem was a faulty display hinge. The HP support replaced the display entirely, the hinge and the wifi card.Today I noticed a strange behaviour on display backlighting. Yes, this looks like a issue with backlighting, not with pixel.Because the pixel changes its color and luminance correctly basing on what it's shown on the screen, but its BRIGHTER than others.Looking further, it's not just a pixel, it's a brighter spot, has nothing to do with pixels itself in my opinion. This is noticeable with light colors, on black/gray and darker colors it isn't visible.I'm starting to wonder about quality of spare parts and in general with HP products and their engineering.I'm a bit disappointed because after spending 1500? for a premium product I had to send it to repair, and it stayed 1 month and more away, lost 1 month of warranty, and worst of all, I can't enjoy my product.Today an issue showed again.I work in photography and I'm really starting to wonder if I have to consider to sell my Spectre x360 and looking to other manfacturers for my personal/work laptop choice.Attached there's a photo of the problem.

I've had the same problem as seen in 8 previous pages on this forum. My wife opened our 1 month old, $2000 hp spectre x360 laptop to find the screen had cracked. By the time we got the laptop to hp, the cracks had spread and some shards of glass fallen out near the origin of the crack at one hinge. Hp have deemed this as physical damage and quoted us $523 for repairs, on what without doubt was a defective screen. I can't even begin to express my anger and disappointment at both the quality of hp screens based on the 8 pages of similar issues, and the ridiculous quoted repair costs. I could buy a new laptop for less. With this level of customer service, I don't see hp maintaining their reputation of quality.

How can you scratch your computer when you just open it. 5 min after the scratch became a crack and got the bottom left of my computer to the middle top . Then decide to reach HP support to send my computer to repair. Thinking that it is under the warranty. But not !! No warranty for screen damage. This is a defect problem, that HP should cover or recal the computer. They shouldn't leave there customer unhappy with their product and their customer service handling situation. Beside they will charge me 300$ for repair. This is not fair that some people with the same problem get covered and other not. This is the last time i buy HP product. Use to love them not anymore.  I recently bought a HP spectre x360 15'' touch screen laptop from best buy. Within 2 months of my usage , while opening the laptop last week, the screen got cracked from the centre . This was totally unexpected. Just by opening the laptop , the screen has a crack in it. I have found several people with the same issue. Also , the hinges of the laptop are way too loose. The screen looks a bit slant . I have found this issue common with alot of people. This is not the problem. I have been to bestbuy , given my laptop for repair. They are charging me $514 for it. This is extremely expensive , given that the laptop cost is around 1000$. The screen repair costs me $514 which is way out of my budget. I dont think this is done and fair. I am ready to spend a bit of money for repairing it even while considering the poor design of this laptop which i realize now , after using it for a while. I cant spend half the laptops cost on only my screens repair. Please look into the matter and give some positive feedback. This has been dragged way too much and its urgent as per my situation.

Hi, I have an HP Spectre x360, the model number is 13-w063nr, and the product id is X7V22UA. I recently broke the screen. Both the glass is cracked badly in two spots, and the display itself has a large portion of dead pixels in the middle of the screen, along with more dead pixels elsewear, but less so. Everything works completely fine, including the webcam and IR login feature using Windows Hello. Except for the touchscreen itself. Although portions of the screen are somewhat usable, the touchscreen does not work anywhere. I have been told by HP Support that the repair would cost 700 plus shipping. However I have seen that I can buy the specific part from hp's part website for about 350. I am wondering if there are any part replacement discounts that I can get, as this is still absurdly high. Or if there are any cheaper options. I have not been able to find any 3rd parties that are able to repair it, as, as far as I can tell, I can only get the replacement screen from HP itself.

I have seen others on your forums with the same issue. What are my options? From looking on the reviews here and speaking to my IT delaer, there is an obvious design flaw with the screen that needs some investigation from HP - there are literally hundreds of customers that have had this same problem - can someone help on this please - I am very unhappy after paying out 900 on this to break after only a month !!!!Many Thanks inadvanceDean Johnson

I have looked into your issue about your HP Spectre x360 and issues with screen fading Windows 8. I have has some luck with changing the adaptive brightness. Try to click the Windows key, type in Power Options. On the right click Change plan settings. Then click on the bottom section Change advanced power settings link.Display ?> Enable adaptive brightness, and change the settings there. Restart the Notebook. You could  try using the Windows Update Troubleshooting tool to fix any updates that have not come through for Windows 10.  Please restart the Notebook twice to make sure all update have been completed. Please let me know how this goes.Thanks.

I wish I had read the reviews before buying this laptop. I've had the laptop for 5 months and didn't drop it just went to open the screen one morning and it had cracked without impact. Called hp (my laptop is still under warranty) and they claimed it would be 471$ for repair when it is clearly badly manufactured and a defective screen. For a laptop that flips around and should be better built I am extremely disappointed. I am a university student and I will be telling everyone and posting on McGill forums how horrible this laptop is and how horrible hp customer service is. I was told many different things on the phone and never got a straight answer. For the same price by a MacBook, hp isn't worth the grief and the time.

I purchased my HP Spectre x360 (i7, 8GB, 256SSD, Windows 10) two days ago.It worked perfectly until midday today when the touch keyboard icon in the bottom right of the toolbar began to toggle on and off for no reason.  Simultaneously, the touch screen was unresponsive for the majority of the 13.3" display.  When the icon is not toggling, everything works fine.  This problem occurs (what seems like) at random times for random durations.I have done nothing outside normal use and checking to make sure there are no problems. My guess is it has something to do with switching from the various "360" modes and possibly the connectivity between the screen and keyboard panels.Has anyone else had similar problems? Are there any solutions already in place?

Same, had funny argument with online tech, who insisted that it was non-covered "accidental damage".  Told him that there was no accidental damage, unless he means that an accident happened during the laptop's design phase.   Finally he agreed to take it in and let the warranty department decide if it was a defect or "accidential damage. "   I'll report back on the results.

Hello All,

I saw the massive post (over 14 pages long) on the issue with the cracked Spectre x360 screens.  I purchased my Spectre approximately 2 months ago and I noticed the screen is starting to crack.  The crack is just to the right of the middle at the top.  The crack started at the small hole to the right of the camera and has spread to the very top and now down my screen.  It is clearly not the LCD because the touch screen still works and no pixels are messed up.  This appears to be the outer screen.  Has anyone been able to get HP to recognize the flaw?  I love the laptop but am not impressed that the screen has already cracked.  I am very careful with my devices and this is used only for my company.  I am hoping someone on this board can help me with getting the glass replaced.

Thank you,

Hi, My loan machine is a 15" Spectre x360 with 4K screen. My friend's machine is a 13" Spectre x360 with 2560x1440 screen. Those machines are thin therefore we won't put them to a backpack and give them in well protected computer bags. I believe the glass itself on any FLAT and well protrected situation won't break. Hope this helps.

I purchased my Spectre x360 six months ago and have taken very good care of it. Every night I clean the keyboard and screen and make sure that there are no obstructions before closing it and storing it on my desk for the night. However, this morning I opened my laptop and noticed on the bottom of the screen near the left hinge there is a crack. As a college student, this was a graduation present and I am hardpressed to afford any repairs and was distraught to find out there was damage to the computer that I take very good care of it. As a long-time HP user and satisfied customer, knowing that I had 6 months of warranty my boyfriend called the technical support and customer service centers multiple times in order to try and resolve this issue. After four calls he was able to connect with a support representative who after setting up a case number said that the cost would be over $400 after discounting it. After some separate investigation we discovered the LCD is operating fine and only the touch screen glass has been cracked. Upon further analysis of the crack, the brittle failure could have only occurred through high pressure or high torques, neither of which have occurred. It is outrageous that such a company that provides a warranty cannot amend an issue that is the company's own fault and is so widespread. This is not an accident that should be covered under Accidental Coverage as it is not my fault that is happened. I have been very happy with this product up to this poi... Read more

Posting from my daughters laptop, which she only uses at home and on her desk. Her screen has developed a crack similar to others described here. The crack is in the top right of the screen and so far is not affecting the display or touch tracking. She has rarely taken this out of the house, and noticed the crack one day when opening it otherwise normally. I do notice when opening the screen even carefully it does feel like it is flexing, and you can see distortions in the display images when opening.. In any case, I am hoping to find some resolution to this as she has had this for less than a year, and otherwise loves it.. [Editted]Having just chatted with online support, am feeling angered.. Was quoted several hundred dollars to replace the screen, would be replaced with the exact same, and with the number of similar issues here seems like this could just happen again when opening or closing..  My daughter loved this, and was considering replacing the lenovo my wife has with a new one of these... But am unsure now..

Opened my laptop and the screen is cracked.  It has been in its case all night and wasnt moved so i can only assume that the damage occured from taking it home. At no point was it dropped or hit.  I called hp and sent a photo they told me that the screen isnt covered and i have to send it to singapore to be fixed. This was a very expensive purchase for me and i expected a more durable screen.  From what i have read on the forums it seems a lot of the screens are cracking and it is a defective screen issue. Can you please arrange to have this fixed ASAP under warranty.

Hello.  I bought an Hp Spectre x360 13-4101dx On Friday, October 10th, 2015. Today i closed the laptop as anyone normaly would, and opened it a few minutes later to find the screen cracked. The laptop was not closed with any force, and upon furth research this seems to be a problem many others are having with this device. This is a virtually brand new product and the damage is not due to handling fault.  I am also an employee at Best Buy and have sold many of these laptops to customers because I thought they were a great product but now my faith in HP is in question.I have attached and image of the crack.I would really like this issue to be resolved.Thank you,Brennan Guernsey.

I haven't had too many issues but occaisionaly the screen flickers.  My biggest question is I am looking for advice on how to get the screen to rotate into tablet mode when it is flipped and have the keyboard and trackpad turn off.  Do you have any advice?  I am using Ubuntu 16.04.

Another cracked screen. My daughters computer is 7 months old. She was flying back from holiday and the computer was in a padded computer case inside a backpack. On opening the computer after the flight there was a crack on the LHS of the screen which then spread diagonally right, across the screen. The computer was fine before the flight and was not dropped or mis-used. Waiting to hear back from customer service but not hopefull as the standard line is that it is the users fault. What happens if I have it repaired and it cracks again? Thanks HP, will be the last product bought from you.

Dear All, I'm new in this community, I appreciate if somebody can help me with this problem. I recently got a new HP Spectre X360-13-4196ms. It's a great convertible ultrabook with core i7-6500U processor, 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD and Windows 10 OS. But when I bend it to 360 degrees the screen suddenly off for a few seconds and it is repeated to flash on and off. It happens only when the screen bent to 360 degrees and on other angles, it doesn't have any problem.I did a lot of things to check the reason of this problem. I found that this problem doesn't happen in the safe mode and also in the main mode when the graphics driver (Intel HD Graphics 520) is disabled. I tried to update the Windows and Graphic driver, but the problem still exists.I don't know that this problem is a hardware problem or just a software one? I searched throw internet but I didn't find anybody else reporting this kind of problem.I also read this threadhttp://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-Video-Display-and-Touch/Screen-flashing-on-off-on-brand-new-HP... but I think my problem is different from the one explained there. I appreciate any idea and help about this issue. Many thanks,Moh

I just bought a HP SPECTRE 13.3" 4k version about couple of days ago, and I realize that the screen sometimes flicker or goes to black for no apparent reason. And at times when I'm using Thunderbird mail and google chrome, the lag is a unbearable, takes a few seconds for the mouse to go to the destination I wanted it to go.Is this a hardware or a software problems? Please help!

A:HP Spectre x360 13.3 4k screen issues

I highly recommend using the HP PC Hardware diagnostics that your unltrabooik was delivered with. Press the power button and then tap the Esc key. That will invoke a startup menu. In the startup menu press the F2 key to invoke the HP PC Hardware diagnostics. Run the system tests. Beside your subject line, I notice that you mentioned nothing further about a screen issue. Your ultrabook has a touchpad and a cursor, not a mouse, unless you have connected on to a USB port.
