An unspecified error has occured

Q: An unspecified error has occured

Hi, here is my problem, hope you will be able to help me with it.

Recently when my computer boots, chkdsk starts running automatically. Thats ok. It does step 1 0f 3, great, does 2 of 3, however when it is doing step 3 of 3 its freezes at some percent over 50% and gives the following error:

"An Unspecified error has occured"

NOw everytime i reeboot my computer chkdsk runs and the same error occurs. I need chksdsk to complete its check because i dont want chkdsk to run at the beggining of every reboot (it takes to long)

Also because of chkdsk running on reboot, i cannot defrag my computer as chkdsk has exclusives rights to my hard drive at the moment

Can someone help me finish the disk check or some how disable chkdsk from loading on reboot.

Thank YOU

Preferred Solution: An unspecified error has occured

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi,if any disk tool hangs I boot into safe mode & run it.Have never run Chkdsk as it's
not preferred by windows,if you can't run it in "safe" try scandisk as it's the default.,
& does the same task.Usually only runs at bootup if shutdown hasn't been regular.

I downloaded the .exe for 7 Home Premium from the UK Ultimate Steal site. It says it's preparing setup1.box, but eventually it gives me an error message saying "Unspecified Error".

The .iso is equally annoying, I burned it to a DVD and tried to get my laptop to boot from the DVD drive. It waited a moment and then booted from the hard drive. I burned to a different DVD and attempted to boot from DVD drive, it did the same. I then tried to boot a DVD containing Ubuntu. This booted perfectly fine.

So, can anyone help?

A:Unspecified error

You may want to create a small partition and extract the contents of your ISO disc there.. Then run setup.exe from there... let us know how it goes... Good Luck!

Hi, first time poster here....

I'm encountering a problem occasionally when trying to burn a DVD. When it gets between 85-95% in burning the disc, sometimes it will pop up a unspecified burning error and quit. If I do a system restore on my computer I can correct the problem and get it to burn DVDs fine for a few days before I encounter this same problem again. I have checked to see if a new firmware update is available for the burner, but there isn't one. I'm enclosing the error report from my last unsuccessful burn.

I'm using a HP Compaq Presario SR1838NX XP Media Center 2005 computer, purchased 7/06 and burning onto Sony discs (which have worked for me in the past). Any help (not super computer smart but not stupid either) is appreciated.

Thank you.

So here it goes...
I have not been able to defrag my c drive in a very long time because it is scheduled to run at startup. At startup, my disk scan gets to 41% and then ends because of unspecified error. I have done this in safe mode with the same results. I have tried to run chkdsk/f on it's own and can't. Trying to analyze or defrag always gives me the message that the chkdsk on c drive is scheduled. I see no way around this. I have updated my driver within the last three months and have scanned for viruses and such and have come up empty. My computer is SO slow and I am thinking that the c drive is fragmented, but I don't know. It is 81% free. I hope this makes sense to someone. Help please! Thanks for your time.

A:chkdsk/f has unspecified error

FWIW: Anything that prevents chkdsk from running...is probably not going to be pleasant to resolve.

Try this...Start/Run...type chkdsk /r (with space between k and /) and hit Enter. Type Y in response to onscreen message...and hit Enter.

Reboot the system...the chkdsk /r should execute (or try to).

Defrag normally will not run if chkdsk cannot complete its functions...so chkdsk /r before defragging is a good idea, IMO.

I haven't used my desktop for awhile, and it isn't very old around 2007-2008 it was bought. It has Windows Vista and when I turn it on the computer says:

Checking file system on C:
The type of the file system is NTFS
Volume label is OS

Then it says something about disk inconsistencies and the option to cancel the Chkdsk.
HOWEVER, when it says press "any key" I press around my keyboard and nothing happens and it still goes into Chkdsk.
Additionally when I try to let Chkdsk just finish itself, it says "Unspecified error," and it wont complete.

It usually gets stuck around stage 1 of 3 at around 5%

Note: My keyboard is wireless.

To solve the issue, discussed above, you should try running the chkdsk utility manually. For this, you can consider the following suggestions:

Boot the computer and access its command prompt to run the command. You should run chkdsk with switches like, /f, /r, and/or /p
You can boot your computer using Windows installation disk and run chkdsk from its command prompt
Move your hard disk to a different computer, attach it as a slave, and check the disk for errors"

Hi everyone,

I was just helping a friend update their newly installed system running a Windows 7 Ultimate x64bit OS and have completed all Windows Updates. The Windows installation was from an image which I used to reimage the hard drive with the OS. When checking for software updates using Ninite it resulted in an error.

I honestly don't know if this could be a Windows problem, a Windows Update problem (something that could have gone wrong during/after) or could it be due to software?

Not sure if this is a normal error occurance. I've never encountered this kind of problem from a newly installed and updated system before. Any help and advise would be greatly appreciated.

A:Getting an 'Unspecified Error' - 0x80004005 for

Do you mean that attempting to install Ninite, it threw this error, or do you mean that it's installed already, and throws this error when attempting to install an update?
I don't see WU being in the list of offered 'clients' - although .NET 4.5.2 is, as are some other things possibly probably best left to WU.

I'm not sure how far you are willing to be non-destructive about this. The solutions to this usually involve destructive methods such as removing the offending software package and/or service.

this thread has a couple good ideas as to the approach. Usually starts with doing a simple chkdsk /r in the Windows Recovery Environment (opened from the Windows 7 disk; the recovery environment that's on the drive cannot mount the drive for repairs).

I just got a new computer recently ( yesterday ) and I upgraded it to Windows XP Professional. I installed my favourite online game MapleStory that can be downloaded from the internet. I tried every way I can think of but it just doesn't work. Anyone knows how to solve this problem?

A:error code: -2147467259 (Unspecified error)

This is what it says on their website, but I have no idea what it means:

" The following error code is not from MapleStory.
Rather, it's from the Windows itself.

If you have a virus, hacking or macro programs, it can produce
various codes, so it's recommended that you delete those programs before playing the game."

I dont think they mean you should remove your antivirus software.

My computer is running Windows XP Media Edition. When it starts up I get the message that my disk needs to be checked for consistency and that chkdsk will run. It starts and then says chkdsk failed for an unspecified error. Since the error is "unspecified" I have no idea where to start to figure out the problem! My computer seems to run fine once Windows is up. Would inconsistency indicate that my hard disk may be getting ready to fail? Any insight into this problem would be greatly appreciated, Thanks.

A:Chkdsk Fails For "unspecified Error"

You can do a couple of things to check out your hdd, go to my computer, right click on you hdd (this usually is your C drive), click on properties, click on the tools tabb, and under Error-checking click on Check now. This will show you if you have any bad sectors.

You can find out the make and model of you hdd by following the same instructions above except in properties click on the hardware tabb. With this information you can go to the manufacturers web site and download their diagnostic tool, you will need to transfer that to a CD. You should go into the BIOS and make the CD-ROM the first device in the boot order so that the CD you made will boot. After you boot from the CD it should prompt you to run the diagnostics.

Hello all,

Ok I'm bordering on absolute desperation right now, pitiful as that may sound but I seriously have no idea how to correct this other than just having my Computer vendor wipe my computer and reinstall everything. But I'm concerned about doing that so I decided to come here.

Anyway this is my problem, I recently encountered an issue on the 22nd of November. I was playing Medieval 2 Total War and was on the campaign map. I moved one of pieces to intiate a real time battle, and then the loading screen came up and the bar went to about half and then I got a CTD with the message "Medieval 2 Total War has suffered an unspecified error and will now be shut down." I tried repeatedly to play the game but got the same message each and every time. The problem is that now it seems to have spread to all of my games making any and all of them unplayable.

I've tried multiple system restores and posting the game's forum but it appears that help there is not forthcoming. I'd surmise that it's because since this a multiple game problem they view at as something to do with my computer and thus not their problem.

I have some basic skil in computers, I've managed problems before with my games however I've never encountered something that affected ALL of them at once. I don't know if it is a virus or not but I've run some scans with a free trial of CA from the microsoft website and everything seemed ok.

A:Unspecified Error for Multiple Games

Do you ever encounter any problems outside of games, like web browsers crashing randomly?

First things I would do is update drivers and get any patches for the games, although it doesn't seem like that's the problem here. Still, it's worth a shot, and it's the easiest thing to do. I would also try running the games with the absolute minimum of background applications running, so try closing anything running in your system tray that you don't need.

Next, I would download and run MemTest86. It's a bootable floppy or CD that test your memory for any errors. If you get any errors during the test (It may take a while to run), then you have a hardware issue.

Welcome to Seven Forums mrfreezzzz. Is this a problem that just started, and do you know when if so? If it just started, you can try a System Restore point from just before it began

System Restore

If no help, try a clean start to see if there is a conflict

Troubleshoot Application Conflicts by Performing a Clean Startup

You might try and edit the tag information in WMP

Add or edit media information in Windows Media Player

If you can edit there, it likely isn't a file permission issue, but more an Explorer issue. You could try on another user and see if the problem occurs on that user as well. If it does not occur on another user, you could try and fix the corrupted user

Fix a corrupted user profile

If none of the above help, you should also run the System File Checker

SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker

Did you make any changes just before the problem began? Installed any new programs? Ran any optimization programs, etc?

Would you be able to copy the file to another windows 7 PC and see if you can edit it there?

A Repair Install is also an option if the problem exists on all users, and nothing else helps.

Repair Install

Today in my efforts to deal with TAGS (about which I am ignorant) which are part of the lefthand column of the Windows Gallery, I inadvertently removed items having nothing to do with those thousands in the Gallery.

It did not occur to me that anything done there could affect entirely separate areas. Unsure how much I lost, but the one I know about is ROBOFORM. It had been wiped clean of contents which most importantly includes my 100-plus IDs & PWs. That is of indescribable importance representing an accumulation of several years. YES, I do have a backup, and more up-to-date than I recalled: It is a file in DOCUMENTS, ROBOFORM LIST 26JUN09.
Transferring into RoboF Passcards now empty is important but secondary to main problem. Yes, RoboF provided a URL to accomplish this but without going into details, I have been unable to do it.

I was confident the easy solution is System Restore. Sure enough, there were two restore points of yesterday which was most encouraging.
Went through the process without difficulty on each of them, but both ended:

When attempting to use Backup and Restore in Windows 7 I get an 'unspecified error' in reference to the executable file 'sdclt.exe' which is the Backup application located in the System32 folder. The error occurs when you click on 'Manage Space' or 'Change Settings.' Running the System File Checker on 'sdclt.exe' results in no file integrity issues. I have attached a Problem Step Recorder and a screenshot of the results of the System File Checker. If anyone knows how to resolve this issue I would greatly appreciate your input. Thank you.

p.s. - I am able to successfully backup my computer due to creating a workaround shortcut but the errors I am getting are still present.

Hello for apparently no reason windows system restore wont restore back to any restore point in my list. My system specs are as follows: Windows vista home premium X86 32-bit, Nvidia 680i sli mobo, Wofdale 8500e cpu, dual 8800 GTX in sli, corsair dominator ddr2 4 gigs of total ram, AVG antivirus. I have all model numbers for each item and their corresponding driver numbers. I should state that i have no problems with my rig at the current moment but when i update drivers i usually make a restore point in case theres a problem. Recently i had a problem with a nvidia driver roughly 3 months ago when i tried to use system restore i got the unspecified error message. I tried 7 times since then with same unspecified error message each time. I figured i should try to fix whats wrong since its been three months and i cant use system restore makes things scary if something happens. I have run memtest86 no errors, i have disabled AVG and run in safe mode to no avail. Im not sure sure how to proceed. Any help would be most apperciated. Thank you for taking the time to read this.

Tried to do a system restore on my Dell Inspiron with Windows 7 to a period before installing something. I was told the restore failed because "an unspecified error has occurred: It referenced the following 0x80070005, and told me to disable my antivirus software. So I disabled Microsoft essentials and tried again. I have Zone Alarm's firewall up.

What might be going on and how do I fix it?

My windows 7 computer all of a sudden won't boot/start. When I tried to do a system restore to an earlier working point, the message I got was "system restore incomplete, unspecified error during restore 0x8000ffff". What does this mean and how to I fix it?

Have an Acer TravelMate 5760 Laptop that was last logged in yesterday 11/12/14, today it will not start. Getting the BSOD and wants to run repair. Cannot repair. Able to log in to Safe Mode. Tried to do a system restore and get error 0x8000fffff.

The results of the repair failure are Bugcheck 19 Parameters = 0x22,9xfffff8a000800000,0x1,0x0
System File integrity error code 0x490

Cannot find any information on how to repair these errors.

Tried to run diagnostics and it errors out and goes into repair mode again.

I am assuming that I have a possible hardware issue, but cannot find how to test for this. Not positive since it will boot into safe mode.

Anyone know how to resolve this problem?

Ive tried a whole bunch of different things to solve this error -
an error occured during DirectPlay Voice Setup. the error code is 0x8015017

Ive tried the DPVsetup.exe fix

RESOLUTION
This problem generally occurs only the first time that you run the test. If this problem continues to occur after the first attempt, follow these steps:
1. In Control Panel, double-click Sounds and Audio Devices.
2. On the Voice tab, under Voice Playback, click Advanced.
3. On the Performance tab, move the Hardware Acceleration slider at least one position to the right.

Ive installed 2 different files..

And still the tick remains on Mute against the microphone?? I can hear sound through the mike but cannot activate it?? Can anyone help?

hi everyone,
sometimes i get this error message that says "An error occured inside a plug-in contained on this page.".... when i get this error i click ok.. then another pops up and after i click ok about 5 times i have to restart my computer.

one of the sites that this happens to me with ishttp://www.gnronline.com/ when i click on the merchandise link at that site. i think the problem may have to do with quicktime because usually i see a quicktime box above the error messages. can anyone help please?

A:Error message: An error occured inside a plug-in contained on this page.

Hiya

I don't have Quicktime installed on this pc, and I didn't see the error that you're getting. Do you have Quicktime installed?

Also, in any other sites, does the error come up with the QT box?

If not, lets see a log, just to be sure:

go to www.spychecker.com/program/hijackthis.html , and download 'Hijack This!'.
Unzip, doubleclick HijackThis.exe, and hit "Scan".

When the scan is finished, the "Scan" button will change into a "Save Log" button.
Press that, save the log somewhere, and please copy & paste its contents to the forum.

It will possibly show other issues deserving our attention, but most of what it lists will be harmless or even required, so do NOT fix anything yet.
Someone here will be happy to help you analyze the results.

Hi,

After months of trying different things I have gave up and come here for help. The problem arrises when trying to install AVG 2012. The error that is displayed during installation is;

"Severity Error
Error code: 0xC0070643
Error Message: General Internal Error.
Additional Message: Installing 3rd party redistributables failed. If Windows update is prepared on your computer, install it, if Windows update was installed recently, verify, please, its successful completion. Try to install AVG then again.

Having looked around, people say this is a windows update error. I have followed various links back to microsoft support and ran fixes which have been unsuccessful.

Is there anything that can be done without formatting this laptop?

Thanks
Jason

Having looked further into the problem, if I look at installed windows updates it says no windows updates installed but I know for a fact that Windows Updates are installed.

I saw a few old posts about this same topic, but none quite fit my situation so I'm starting a new post to request help/suggestions. Sorry for the length, but the instructions say to be as detailed as possible.

My System: I'm running Windows Vista Home Premium 64bit on an HP Pavilion dv7 Notebook PC.

MY PRIMARY PROBLEM: Inability to do a System Restore after multiple attempts using various restore points.

First, I'm including what predicated my original attempt to do a system restore. While working on my computer on Sunday evening, some sort of error message popped up, but it disappeared before I really saw what it said. However, the result was that when I next switched to IE8, it wasn't working properly. I seem to recall it saying something about "i.exe" in the original quick message that disappeared on me & later saw something about missing java script, but this was before I knew I had a big problem so I didn't actually note the details.

FIRST FIX ATTEMPT:

My first step at resolving this was my standard one - Shutdown & Restart. When I did this, I stepped away from the computer & came back to see that it was doing a disk check. As it does this from time to time for no apparent reason, I wasn't too worried. However, when the system came back online, there were several obvious issues including.
My background picture changed back to some sort of default & all of my desktop icons were rearranged to sort of a standard setup. The items that ... Read more

A:Unspecified Error Occurred During System Restore

Hello Suzyc!

Excellent work on your post! It is very rare for someone to make so much effort, and it makes so much of a different to us!

I have seen similar issues to these before. All slightly different, but I know of a few things to check out.

1) Click on the Start Orb > Computer > C:\ > Users

You must do it through My Computer please, as instructed. Do you see two copies of your Account Name. For example, if this were me:

All Users
Default
Default User
Public
Richard
Richard

^ Two of my name. Tell me if this is the case on your computer.

I doubt this will be the case.

Go into your Account Folder (Richard for me)

Are there two Document folders, two Downloads folders, etc. etc.

If there are, go into each one in turn. One will contain your actual data, one will contain the data of a new computer. Delete the ones which come from a new computer, leaving only the ones with your data in them.

Log off and back on again.

2) Norton is not the only program to do this. What anti-malware tools do you have. McAfee, MSE, ESET, Spybot S+D with Tea Timer, Webroot

The two in bold have a far worse reputation of causing this problem than Norton does. I need to know if you have either of these two programs installed.

3) Are you backups disconnected and safe?

4) I need to take two logs. The first log will help me diagnose your System Restore issue, your SFC result, and other lurking problems.

Please navigate to C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\ and copy CBS.log to your Desktop. Rig... Read more

A:Unspecified Error When Changing My User Account Name

Sounds like a possible malware infection. Go here:

http://www.trendsecure.com/portal/en-US/tools/security_tools/hijackthis/download

Download HijackThis, install using the default settings, and launch the program.
Click "scan and save a logfile."
DO NOT HAVE IT FIX ANYTHING YET! Most of what it finds will be harmless or even necessary. Copy the ENTIRE text of the logfile and close the program.
Paste the contents of the logfile back here in your next reply and wait for one of this site's malware experts to have a look at your log. They will provide you with further instructions.
You can use the "report" button to politely request that your thread be relocated to the Malware Removal/HJT forum.

In the meantime, you may wish to have a look at the "sticky" threads in the General Security forum:

Vista Home Premium on HP 2000 series laptop.

Chkdsk stops on stage 1 after about 3% checked. Gives unspecified error.

Other times it gets to stage 2 and hangs at 35% checked with the hard drive light on but nothing happening after a minute.

I checked the WDC 1200 hard drive with Western Digital's diagnostic and it checks fine on the quick check and the longer check.

I have tried running safe mode and it hung up there as well after saying something else was using the hard drive and chkdsk might give errors.

I ran chkdsk both from command box and from the drive C tools window.

Running MP9 on Windows 98SE. When I click on the icon to open it, I get the message, "Unspecified XML Parse Error" Clicking on More Information goes to a help topic, OC00D1197, Cannot play the file", although I have not tried to play a file, only open the application. After that, I get a message box, "Windows Media Player ! An internal application has occurred." When I click on OK, the next box is, "WMplayer !This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down. If problem persists . . ."

Supplemental information:

1. I experienced a crash a few months ago that resulted in having to "go back" in time to get it on again. Everything else seems to work fine.

2. I have uninstalled MP9 and downloaded and installed a new version without positive effect.

3. I have thought that perhaps something in the OS itself was corrupted and should be reinstalled.

If I put the CD with the Win 98SE installation in the drive, will it offer the opportunity to repair, or will it make a completely new installation?

4. Along that line of reasoning, I have tried to update the OS on the Microsoft web site, but I can't seem to get to the page that has the update information.

If any of these suggestions suggest a particular problem and solution to any of you knowledgeable folks, I'd be most grateful to hear what it is.

Many thanks.
