Why does my Hard Drive Activity Light Constantly Blink

Q: Why does my Hard Drive Activity Light Constantly Blink

Hi,

I upgraded my HP Pavilion a1540n Desktop to Windows 7 a week ago. Ever since, my hard drive light constantly blinks. After looking at the disk activity in the Windows Resource Monitor and doing some research I am leaning towards the page file as the problem. I am not sure if that is in fact the problem as there seems to be quite a few processes creating high disk activity, including Firefox profile cache, $Logfile, and MpWppTracing.bin. I only have 1GB of RAM. Would I be better served to add RAM before doing anything else like using Cacheman?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Do you actually have constant hard drive activity, or is the light just blinking?

Hi folks. My hard drive appears to be working almost constantly. I have cleaned the pc with ccleaner, defragged and Malwarebytes reports no infections. Any help is appreciated!

A:XP SP3 Hard Drive Light indicates almost constant activity

1) Does this happen only shortly after boot or all the while the system is up?
2) What is new or different since the last time everything worked properly (ie, new hw, new sw, virus, error, etc)?
3) Open Task Manager to the Processes Tab and sort on the cpu column with highest usage at the top. Which process is using the cpu cycles?

I have a Toshiba laptop, running Windows XP Home, with 1 GB ram, and about all I use it for is email while traveleing and PowerPoint presentations when I teach.

I have a Linksys wifi card which I don't use at home since I have no wifi network at home. But if I want to use the web at home, I wire up my Ethernet cord that comes from my Comcast cable modem through my Linksys Ethernet router.

At the moment, I have booted it up, but I have not put in the wifi card and I have not connected the modem. So the only wires into the rig are for 120 vac power and the mouse!

I've completed the normal startup and I'm looking at the customary Windows desktop screen. All icons are lit and steady. Everything on the quick launch bar and the task bar is normal. The cursor is the customary arrow and it's steady.

I've been in this configuration for nearly 30 minutes now, and the hard drive activity light on the front of the rig has not stopped blinking randomly the whole time!

What the **** is it doing?!

A:Hard drive activity light never stops blinking!

Have you checked in Task Manager under processes to see what might be running that may be causing this?

I had that happen with a brand new build a couple of years ago. Changing cases made no difference. The retailer checked the motherboard and replaced it.

Hi all,
Recently upgraded my memory from 1GB ddr2 (533MHz 2x512mb) TO 4GB 6400 Crucial Ballistic and initally had problems could only use 3GB wouldnt boot with the 4GB read some forums
and had to reduce 800mhz to 667mhz. Now it recognised the 4GB but still was crashing so having spoken to crucial they advised upping the memory voltage. so it was at 1.8v (AUTO) increased to 2.085v. Seemed to working fine trouble is ever since my messing in BIOS the hard drive light is on constanly and making in use noises. Should i be concerned?

Have turned off search indexing, disabled bit torrent, done a memory test was good
done scandisk no problems found. I think the voltage may have changed something?? everything else is on auto.vcore, nb core, vcore offset.
Anyone know whats wrong?
Also i downloaded the lastest motherboard drivers from nvidia 15.08 and when its installed my Hitachi hard drive comes up in safely remove hardware! So i changed

Hello,
I have a HP G60-443CL Notebook, 64 Bit Vista, lately is been slowed down considerably and the fan is running constantly and the hard drive light is almost constant. When I open an application such as browser, after a bit the hard drive begins to run constantly and slows the computer down to a crawl. The fan is always running loud. I do not notice anything under Task manger that appears to be hogging memory, but I may not know quite how to look more extensively. It has become very annoying and quite a hindrance to my work environment. If I try to run more than one application, everything on the computer just slows down tremendously. Having used Desktop computers for many years, I was surprised to see that my new Dell Desktop did not include a Hard Drive Activity light. Hard Drive activity is a good indicator when booting, trouble shooting and communicating with on-line Support Assistants. Is there a way to add this light?  Does the motherboard have an output terminal? I know that Dell is sheepish about their users messing with the hardware but I'm asking the question anyway. In my opinion I'd like to know the back story behind the decision to drop the hard drive activity light. Thank You.

For as long as I've had this machine (a little over a year) the HDD light is constantly going wild. (Erratic blinking, but ALWAYS blinking)

After purchasing it, I had to send it in for a warranty claim on a bad mother board.

Got it back, works fine. Used it for a few months, light still blinking.

I've always viewed it as bothersome, but nothing serious.

But now I can HEAR the hard drive making little noises. And I'm worried it's going to fail.

Disk check shows everything is OK. Ran Malwarebytes, Spypot S&D, and Avast! Virus Scan, no issues. I've defragged, tried disabling indexing and the DVD drive. Still blinking.

I've looked at Resource Monitor to see what is using the hard drive, and the list updates so often I can't even see what's doing what. It appears to be mostly activity from Firefox and system processes.

I'm all out of ideas. I'm thinking of upgrading to an SSD with a fresh Windows 8 install, but I don't want to do that and have the light STILL blink.

Could it be a still faulty motherboard? Does anyone have any ideas?

I have four computers, none with an SSD, and everyone of them has almost constant HD activity; there are some pauses. I don't really know why the HD's are so busy, but I don't really care either.

I just received an Inspiron 5000 5368 last Tuesday (Jan. 10, 2017) and everything works except the hard drive activity light doesn't work. When the power adapter is plugged in to the computer, the light does work, but any hard drive activity does not show (It should blink with activity). When the power adapter is unplugged, the activity light does not work at all. I've applied all the firmware updates at the Dell support site for my machine but no joy.
I did find in these forums a key-combination (Fn + H) that does activate the hard disk activity light, but it only works when invoked at the Windows 10 desktop and only for that session. If I restart the computer, the hard disk activity light no longer works, but once I'm at the Windows desktop, I can enter Fn+H and it works again. It seems to be someone forgot to put the command for hard drive activity light in the boot loader code. It's a hassle to do the key combination all the time.
Is there any way I can get this fixed remotely? Or can I get a new machine with this fixed?
I called Dell tech support but the line went dead after a few minutes speaking with a tech support person.
Thanks in advance.

It takes about 45 secs to 1 minute to launch a web browser for example and startup and shutdown are also very slow. .  I have installed all of the windows updates so it is now current.  There is bare minimum of programs installed.  I have defragmented the hard drive and checked it for any problems but it came back clean.  I also ran memtest and the memory shows no errors.   Any help with this would be appreciated.

Hi, a few days ago i downloaded a file from limewire, and when i opened it
the real time protection from my antivirus program said it had found a w32.alcra.f virus in it.

I deleted the downloaded file, but ever since then, the computer seems to have gotten slower. The hard disk activity light (orange) keeps flashing even when i don't have any programs or downloads going on. The lights on my adsl modem also keep flashing.

The antivirus program that found the w32.alcra.f was the Symantec Corporate Edition. I ran a few scans afterwards but it didn't find anything. I then ran AdAware and found a fare bit of spyware. The thing is though, I ran it again about five minutes later and it found more again. THe spyware keeps regenerating itself!

I then downloaded AVG and ran a scan. It immediately found two backdoor.hupigon3.AHGM viruses. There doesn't seem to be much information about that virus, and it only seems to be detected by AVG and nothing else.

I have a Dell Dimension 4500 hard drive. Hello everyone,

As can be read in this topic, I'm having problems with the HDD light on the front of my computer. It is almost constantly on, even when I'm not doing anything with my computer at all.
Also, ever since it started, my computer is very slow. It seems like it's constantly busy doing things, the problem is that I don't know what it's doing.

As you read in the old topic, I've already replaced the HD for a brand new one. I've cloned my old drive onto the new one, and the problem persists, so I guess it has something to do with the things on the drive, and not with the drive itself. The problem with the noise that is mentioned in the topic is solved.

On my MsConfig screen, there are a lot of services checked, is this normal, or could this possibly be causing some problems?

I'm running Windows Vista Home Premium (64-bit) on an Acer Aspire M1641. The computer is about 6 years old and I've replaced the power supply and the graphics card (and the HD, of course).

I've also created a factory-reset disk using Acer eRecovery software. So, if necessary, I could reinstall Windows on my old HD to see if it would work. However, I'd rather keep it in the current state (with all the files still on it) so I'll have some kind of backup if my new drive would ever fail. If someone thinks reinstalling windows would work, I would try it though.

PS: Excuse me for accidental grammar mistakes, english is not my native language

A:Hard disk light almost constantly on, computer very slow

The services are checked because they are being used.  If you remove the check from a box it disables the service.

Open the Task Manager and click on processes to see what is constantly running.

There is no sound, nothing, just the 2 blinking lights. What should I do? Thanks PS: I'm not sure if it's Windows 10 32-bit or 64-bit. It was upgraded from Windows 8

Hi, hope you can help!

History to my problem...
Over the last month or so my pc began to intermittently slow right down. I am running windows 7 as my o/s. This has fairly rapidly become more and more frequent to the point where it is almost constantly running at this slow pace.

I have posted this in the hardware section as the HDD light at the fron of the pc is almost constantly on while this slow pace happens. This is the case right from boot up, so i figure is a hardware issue rather than a windows one.

I have tried cleaning the inside of the pc, resetting the RAM, as well as scanning the HDD and the RAM for errors. Nothing has resulted in an error being discovered.

I have also tried unplugging all hardware other than a usb keyboard, (brand new) videocard and the other essentials. This hasn't helped either.

Please can anyone help me with this, or point me in a good place to 'start'?

A:Very slow computer, HDD drive light on near constantly

Hello there. Several questions:

1.) Have you "Defragmented" your drive recently?

2.) Have you scanned your computer for malware recently?

3.) What percentage of your drive (in MY COMPUTER) is showing as FREE/USED space?
(Drives that are nearly full with data can slow down a computer's speed significantly)

4.) Does your drive make any "noise" such as grinding, clicking etc?

5.) Do you have a "Disk Health" utility that you can use to check your hard drive for errors?

-----
Press CTRL + ALT + DEL. Then choose "Task Manager." Next, click on the "Performance" tab. What is your CPU usage?

only started for a split second. at this point only the fans and such connected

directly to my PSU would jitter / light up. So i took out my g

GFX card and...waaala. It worked, so i messed around playing with the cool Asus

software listening to 5.1 demos. Anyway I Talked to one of my friends who told me

to reconnect the video card into the primary slot instead. So i tried it and it did the

same thing again. Also i tried my backup video card with nothing doing. blinked

and stutterd for a millisecond and stopped, as it did before. Now, it is clear, i felt

relieved all it was, was the video card. so i can just use onboard until i find a good

deal, because my audio setup cost me 260$. Basically the question here is

why does it not work now as it did before i tried to setup the GFX card again. It

acts like the graphics card is still in there shorting it out or something.

fter connecting the AC power supply to CPU and on pressing start button , CPU light does not blink spontaneously ,It took 3 to 5 minutes to start blinking and window start immediately as light start blinking on start button .Reliability report does not show any error.Pl suggest me some remedial action

A:CPU light does not blink spontaneously

Ehm, CPU is "central processing unit", a computer component. It does not have a light linked to its operation. If by CPU you mean the whole machine, call it "computer".

If that led is close to a symbol that resembles a lightbulb, then it's the power led, and tells if your computer is actually getting power or not. It should go on when you press the power switch and remain on until you shut down the computer.
If it is close to a cylinder symbol, it is the memory usage led, and tells if your computer is reading from its main internal memory device. It does blink randomly when in normal operation and if you don't experience other issues you can safely disregard it.

Other leds can indicate the wifi connection or whatever the maufacturer thought to place there, if it's not one of the above, try to describe it or find an image of it from google.

Please follow this tutorial to fill your system specs (step 7 to do it automatically), so we can know what is the thing you have in your hands. Without knowing more, help provided will be limited.

Hi,So my laptop has been having some the same issue. All the other LED lights will turn on except for the charger light. I thought it was the charger so I replaced it, still nothing. Sometimes I have to open it up and move it, ove checked the wiring but everything's fine. Anyone else ever had this issue?

I had previously hooked this up to my big screen via the hdmi.  The next morning I went to turn it on and got nothing.  Holding the power button down with power plugged in, not plugged in any combination for 1 - 120 seconds produces the same exact result.  The little light on the " i " lights up for exactly 4 seconds and then nothing.  I have tried a different power cord and get the exact same result.  I have tried using the emergency reset with a needle on the back of the device...same result. Any help would be great.

A:Yoga won't boot. Red light comes on for 4 seconds no blink.

Can you clarify when you say it "lights up for exactly 4 seconds", is it a solid light or a blinking light?

It only blink one time near power plugin. When pressing the power button the button light doesn't even light.I tried to test it with friend power adapter but won't turn on. But we tried to get battery to it (without adapter), and everything works. I decided to change power DC Jack Power Cable and it doesn't help. It is the same. I don't understand what's wrong. My Yoga 3 was bought 3 months ago at a local retailer. It had been an open box model. A couple of nights ago while using it, my wife got a Blue Screen of some variety. Since then, the machine doesn't work at all. When I push the power button (or the reset button next to it), the KB backlight comes on and power light comes on for about a second and then they both shut off. This cycle is repeated indefinitely until I hold down the power button at which time everything goes off. That is the only response I get from the thing. This machine is only 3 months old but I cannot find any way to get in touch with Lenovo for any kind of support, so I thought I would try here first. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

The hard drive light on my laptop is showing continuous activity and is not going out, even if the computer is left idle.

How can I find out what is happening?

A:Hard drive activity

The drive where the OS is installed will never really go to sleep unless you kill all processes which would cause windows to crash. Open task manager and take note of all background processes and windows processes which will read/write to your drive as needed.

Hello,

I recently discovered that one of my drives has been at 100% activity with no data being read or written. This particular drive is used for virtual instruments and samples for music. I've never had issues before, but I found it odd that loading projects took an insane amount of time to load, which lead me to check the disk usage of this particular drive.

Current response time spikes into the tens of thousands. Again, nothing is being written or read. If I open the drive, I can see all my files, but the drive never seems to stop "searching". I've attatched a picture below:

Any suggestions?

A:Hard-drive at 100% with no activity

That is really weird IMHO! You can try the following suggestions:

Right click your drive from explorer and untick the box shown below. Note that this invokes an unindexing process that will take some time to complete:

You can also go to Control Panel> Indexing Options> and turn off the Indexing Service if the above does not help:

Hope this helps to resolve your issue. Good luck and let us know.

I have a new HP G61 laptop with Windows 7. Regularly when I switch on, the egg-timer icon appears on screen and it is not possible to access any programme. This can last for anything up to 15 minutes. During this time, the hard drive light is on continuously. Once the light goes off, the laptop functions normally. I have deliberatley kept the software on the laptop to a minimum. Mostly MS Office, Skype, Internet Explorer and Norton Anti-virus.

I suspect that there is some software running in the background. Is there any way that I can find out what is running? Thanks

A:Hard Drive Activity

Hi, worth keeping an eye on this, 15 mins is excessive, however this behavior is due to prefetch (superfetch) where your most recent used programs are arranged so they open faster, if you like your computer is learning how you use it and responding. This activity should settle down shortly. I would advise that you also look to get rid of Norton another well known resource hog, and the cause of Blue screen problems, use Microsoft security essentials, it is free from MS.

You can use the "task manager tool" to see what activity there is (set it to "always on top"). Programs that start with the computer can be controlled through "Msconfig" startup tab. You can safely disable ALL startup programs (uncheck the boxes) and windows will still boot, however it is best to have your AV running.. so have a play and if the situation does not improve post back there is more that can be done.

Hello and thanks in advance for answering.

I am curious about something. My hard drive is being really active for about 30 minutes or so before going into power-save mode. Is this normal? I mean it's completely active the whole time. It's a bit worrying. Should there be 30 minutes of activity before it powers-down for the power save?

Thanks!

Hello,

I am currently running Windows 7 Home Premium on an Asus Notebook, recently I've been having a lot of hard drive activity, shown to me by a light on my laptop, which has caused my laptop to run extremely slow and not even open some applications, I'm also not able to uninstall some programs from the control panel. I must force it to start up in safe mode with networking to get it to work. The last application I had downloaded was an update that came up in the bottom right of the screen that seemed to be official although I had also been running a version of lime-wire and frost-wire previously. I've defragged several times it says I have 88% of unused hard drive space, deleted all unneeded programs, and have ran: TrendMicro Housecall, MalewareBytes, Avast antivirus, and Norton Virus scans and all of them have come back with nothing but small tracking cookies. I've deleted all user accounts and created a new one so formatting will not be a problem if necessary but my laptop was preloaded with windows 7 so I do not have a boot disk.

Thank you for your time and help,

A:A lot of hard drive activity, please help

Hello, what was this for.. "The last application I had downloaded was an update"Let's just try an Online scan. Please perform a scan with Eset Online Antiivirus Scanner. This scan requires Internet Explorer,Opera or Firefox to work. Vista/Windows 7 users need to run Internet Explorer as Administrator. To do this, right-click on the IE icon in the Start Menu or Quick Launch Bar on the Taskbar and select Run As Administrator from the context menu.Click the green button.Read the End User License Agreement and check the box: Check .Click the button.Accept any security warnings from your browser.Check Check Remove found threats and Scan potentially unwanted applications. (If given the option, choose "Quarantine" instead of delete.)Click the Start button.ESET will then download updates for itself, install itself, and begin scanning your computer. If offered the option to get information or buy software at any point, just close the window. The scan will take a while so be patient and do NOT use the computer while the scan is running. Keep all other programs and windows closed. When the scan completes, push Push , and save the file to your desktop as ESETScan.txt. Push the button, then Finish.Copy and paste the contents of ESETScan.txt in your next reply.Note: A log.txt file will also be created and automatically saved in the C:\Program Files\EsetOnlineScanner\ folder. If you did not save the ESETScan log, click > Run..., then type or copy and... Ok I recently Installed everything fresh and a posibility of a virus or spyware is minimal, I have Kaspersky installed and a few applications I need, such as clone dvd, any dvd, Nero, Office 2007, all drivers and a few more small programs.

I have Windows Vista Home Premium 64 bit and I'm concerned my Hard drive is always on activity, I can hear it spinning and the led is blinking all the time.

What could be the causes of this? if it's a software program reding/writing on HDD, how can I spot it? Thanks!

A:Always Activity on Hard Drive, Why?

Likely Vista Defrag
It's running as a task in the background

By the way, you can turn off many not required startups with this tool: http://www.mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtml

Kaspersky is also high on resource so there's nothing you can do about that except replace it (I use free Avira Antivirus)
