Explorer.exe crashes when opening a folder containing an .mp4

Q: Explorer.exe crashes when opening a folder containing an .mp4

I'm at my wits end.

I have a couple of folders on 2 different drives that have .mp4 video files in them.
Whenever I attempt to open the folders, Explorer.exe (or the replacement I tried) crashes.

Here's my specs and what I've tried so far:

Windows 7, 64bit, all current updates for Windows and drivers, etc.
12 Gigs RAM, Nvidia GTX 970.

I can delete the files in a DOS window.
I already instructed Explorer to NOT show Thumbnails.
I have scaned with Malwarebytes, etc and am not infected.
A run of System File Checker reported several issues that it could not fix.
None of them involved Explorer.exe, but some were interesting:

The list is not all that long, so you'll find it directly below:
**** How would I go about repairing these files? ***

Preferred Solution: Explorer.exe crashes when opening a folder containing an .mp4

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Maybe a shell extension causing the issue, rather than native Windows code. Ddownloaded a free Shell Extension manager that lets you disable individual shell extensions, ShellExView from Nirsoft. http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/shexview.html

Hello, and thanks in advance for helping me out.
I am using a Windows XP SP2 machine with 1.2 ghz processor and 640 mb of ram.
My antivirus is NAV 10 corporate, it's up to date, and I also recently ran and updated Adaware and Spybot S&D.

Now for my problem. - There is one certain folder on my hard drive that crashes explorer.exe every time I open it. The folder contains some video, picture, audio, and text files. I scanned the folder with Norton and turned up nothing in the way of viruses. I checked for errors on the drive and it turned up nothing.
One thing that baffles me is that explorer doesn't crash immediately. If I click fast enough, I can view files from the folder, like a video for instance. But about the time the video gets started, I get the error message saying explorer.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close. I know lots of people have this error and this problem, but most of the posts I've read about this seem to be a little more general, in that they are crashing at random times.
I only have this problem with this one folder. The rest of the hard drive works fine.
I think that somehow a file within the folder must be corrupt, or maybe there's a bad spot where that folder is located on the hard disk. Is this a possibility?
Really, I suppose what I need to know is: How can I figure out which file (if it is one particular file) is causing this crash?

Explorer crashes when opening a certain folder containing video clips.Pls help me figure out whats causing it...

A:Explorer crashes when opening a certain folder containing video clips

These crashes were caused by memory corruption/exception (Cx05) probably a driver.
Please run these two tests to verify your memory and find which driver is causing the problem.

* If you are overclocking anything reset to default before running these tests.
In other words STOP!!!

* If you have a Raid update its Driver.

Memtest.

Quote:
*Download a copy of Memtest86 and burn the ISO to a CD using Iso Recorder or another ISO burning program. Memtest86+ - Advanced Memory Diagnostic Tool

*Boot from the CD, and leave it running for at least 5-7 passes.

Just remember, any time Memtest reports errors, it can be either bad RAM or a bad motherboard slot.

Test the sticks individually, and if you find a good one, test it in all slots.

Any errors are indicative of a memory problem.

If a known good stick fails in a motherboard slot it is probably the slot.

RAM - Test with Memtest86+

Driver Verifer

Quote:
Using Driver Verifier is an iffy proposition.
Most times it'll crash and it'll tell you what the driver is.
But sometimes it'll crash and won't tell you the driver.
Other times it'll crash before you can log in to Windows.
If you can't get to Safe Mode, then you'll have to resort to offline editing of the registry to disable Driver Verifier.

I'd suggest that you first backup your stuff and then make sure you've got access to another computer so you can contact us if problems arise.
Then make a System Restore po... Read more

I'm not sure when it started, but when I open a certain folder on a network share windows explorer "looks for a solution" and then closes. There is only one folder this happens to and it only contains other folders, html docs, and php docs.

We have dozens of computers that access it fine including 2 identical machines loaded with identical images so I am assuming the user (or software installed by the user) did something.

Hello!

About since I installed jdownloader this afternoon (and afterwards removed "search protect" with AdwCleaner and Malwarebyte Anti-Malware), my Windows explorer regularly freezes.
It does so whenever I do a right-click on any folder or disk or on the free space inside a folder or disk.
It also crashes whenever I open folder, which I have not recently opened or to which I added a big file (bigger than about 1 MB) recently. I could open some folders since this error came up but after adding a file to them, this is not possible anymore. Windows explorer being able to open some folders is probably due to it cashing/indexing some information.
I can read everything using cmd (cd & dir) and execute files directly though.

In safe mode Windows explorer works fine.

What I did so far:
- Following this guide (Right-click is slow or weird behavior caused by context menu handlers) I removed all the handlers in the registry in HKCR\AllFileSystemObjects\shellex\contextmenuhandlers, HKCR\Folder\shellex\contextmenuhandlers and HKCR\Directory\shellex\contextmenuhandlers. Deletion of one handle in HKCR\Directory\shellex\contextmenuhandlers called "WorkFolders" only produces an error. I therefore could not delete this one. It did not help. Afterwards I recovered the registry keys.
- I used system recovery to switch back to a state from the day before yesterday.
- I tried disabling all the files in auto-start using the task-manager with no improvement.
- I ran &... Read more

A:Windows Explorer crashes on right click and opening folder

Windows Explorer is one of the most important program in Windows. When you open it, it does lots of things in the background such as updating the registry, updating the start menu etc...
Most of the problems are caused by Shell Extensions and I know you did some registry tweaks. However, before you go on, you need to run from the elevated command prompt:
dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealthsfc /scannow <== Might have to run multiple times until you get the message: Windows did not find any integrity violation. Then use this link: Right Click Menu Lag on my pc

A:[SOLVED] Explorer crashes when opening one specific folder

The user that logs into this computer with the issue, have them to log into the identical machine that does not have the issue as him/herself.

Does the issue persist, if it does you know it is probably a permissions issue.
If the problem does not persist then you narrowed it down to that computer or their profile on that computer.

Recently my Videos folder became unaccessible as it would crash Explorer after a couple of seconds after it opens. Yes, it does open, I can go into a subfolder/click on a file before it decides to die. I'm running Windows 7 64bit with a TB harddrive. That drive in particular had about 750 gbs, of which the Videos folder is unsing up 167.

I did some research and found that it may have been due to that folder having too many large files. I personally think that my computer is more than adequate to handle them, but tried switching the view from Thumbnails to List, which didn't help at all.

Oh and of course I ran virus-scan and malware scan and all that, found nada.

I also saw that it may be due to a corrupt video file, which does seem possible, but I do not know a way to solve that problem, as do not know which file it could be, and even if I did I would have no way of getting to it before it crashes.

Deleting the folder is not an option. There are simply too many valuable videos collected over time in there (no not pr0n, so scratch that off the possible list of problems...)

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Hi all,

I've just transferred all my work from one laptop to a new one in the expectation that this would make life quicker & easier - not a bit of it. Instead, I find that windows explorer crashes out every time I try to access a folder on the C: drive with lots of photoshop images in it (although it seems to work fine when I try to access the same folder on my backup E: drive). It hangs, then gives me an error message saying its got to close. The details it provides when prompted include a list of 109 modules followed by a .dll file, and a series of different threads. . . ?

System information is Windows NT 5.1 Build: 2600

Any thoughts from anyone would be greatly appreciated.

Hi everyone! Something happened yesterday, I believe it had to do with me installing and Adobe Reader 8 update . For some reason, now I can't open the .doc files out of zipped folder which I had no problem doing before. Even if I unzip it, it still won't open. The Word gives me a line at the bottom of the window "Word is converting file...." and stop responding. I saw some info about possible file association problems, but I don't know how to fix it. I can't open some of the regullar .doc file which I created myself on this laptop, so I'm very frustrated . Please, help!

A:Word crashes when opening .doc in zip folder

That's a pretty unique issue. Do you have a system restore from before that update? If so, try that.

I doubt the association issue at the moment because of the "Word is converting file..." message. That indicates that it is Word that is trying to open the document.

By chance are you running Word as an admin? If so, try running it in non-administrative mode. I've had some luck fixing problems that way.

When i open C:\My Downloads, the host process rundll32 stops responding and restarts the window. It's extremely annoying. I ran check disk and it got to 99% and said it found corrupt files and gave the location of the log it made, but when I went to click on it it said Access Denied.

I think this problem has also caused my downloaded games to stop working now. This is very frustrating. Does anyone know what I can do to fix this??

Thanks in advance,
Rachel

oh, sorry forgot to mention there is no malware involved, and I'm running Vista Home Basic.

today, I wanted to modify my start orb, so I changed something in explorer.exe. I did back the original up.
When I found that it wasn't really to my liking, I restored the original explorer.exe, and here is were the problems began.

When accessing certain folders, such as my user folder and my external hard drive, explorer.exe just crashes and restarts.

I have included a dump using Debugging Tools for Windows, I hope you can help me!

I have a file on my desktop folder where I keep anything that I've downloaded. its a pretty hefty file but its never caused any problems for me until now. when I open it, I have about 5 seconds before a message box appears that says "windows explorer has stopped working" and it has to restart, closing any explorer windows. no other file does this and it only just started the other day. I haven't downloaded anything recently that could cause this. I've tried deleting it but I have to permanently delete the entire folder because it's too big for the recycle bin. I don' want to delete it in case I delete something that I would prefer to keep, and I can't move anything out of it because it crashes before I can C+P or move the file. Any help would be appreciated

Hello,

Since yesterday my pc suddenly started to generate explorer.exe crashes on everything that I try to do. Opening a file in Notepad by "browsing", trying to open "My Computer" or "My Documents" and even trying to browse for a program by using the Task Manager.

When I logon, explorer seems to start fine (sometimes) or immediately when the background is loaded, the error is thrown and the loop initiates...
Sometimes it stops looping the error after 4 - 5 times and then I have to stay away from any file browser, but mostly this is a never ending loop of explorer crashes.
I've tried the following fixes:
- sfc /scannow ===> no errors detected/solved
- malwarebytes ====> nothing detected
- panda antivirus / trendmicro Housecall ===> no virusses detected
- ccleaner (clean register included) ===> no help at all
- system restore to a point before the last windows update ===> no solution

Run Disk Check with Automatically fix file system errors checked. Post back your logs for the checks after finding them using Check Disk (chkdsk) - Read Event Viewer Log.
For any drives that do not give the message:

run disk check again as above. In other words, if it says:

Hi all,

I don't know if this is the appropriate section, but I'm having trouble with my MSN Explorer.

Whenever I try to open the "Download Manager" or try to download something (which automatically opens the Manager), the browser crashes. I can download things using either Firefox or IE and I've had this issue before, found a command somewhere online I could run (using "Run") and that solved the problem. However, I can't seem to find that command (which was on another forum somewhere) and was hoping someone here knew what it is.

Thanks!

It began after the last fresh installation. Anytime I try to open the fonts window from Control Panel, it causes Windows Explorer to crash. Error message refers to fontext.dll.

I tried to repair the fonts folder with Tweak UI, but it didn't helped.

The problem occurs only when I use Control Panel to open the fonts folder. There are no problems when opening the fonts folder directly from My Computer.

It started a while ago when I began to notice that my music folder began to crash on me for no reason, and when i looked at the report it says that there is a problem with C:\DOCUME~1\RAHMAN~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\92f4_appcompat.txt. i scanned for viruses and malware with spybot-search and destroy and ad-aware, also I have defragged, multiple times and i try deleting that folder too. Also it seems that it has spread the folder containing that folder, which sucks cause all my photoshop work and pictures are in there too.

In Windows Explorer (WinXP Pro), I double click on a folder from the right hand pane and it used to open in the same window. Now, when I double click on the folder, it launches the Open With window, in which case I can select from a list of programs, and I can browse to the Explorer application and open the folder in a new window (this is not what I want).

If I single click on the folder in the left hand pane, it changes the way I want it to, but I am used to using the right hand pane.

Before this problem occured, I did the following:
created a new file "C:\Windows\Printdir.bat" with the following:
@echo off
dir /-p /b /o:gen *.* > "C:\0\SaveDir.txt"
start /w notepad "C:\0\SaveDir.txt"

Then I followed these instructions:
Create a new action for file folders
1 Click Start, click Control Panel (or, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel), and then click Folder Options.
2 On the File Types tab, click File Folder.
3 Click Advanced, and then click New.
4 In the Action box, type:
Print Directory Listing
5 In the Application used to perform action box, type:
printdir.bat
6 Click OK.
7 Click OK, click OK, and then click Close.

This allows me to get a listing of all files within a given directory. I've done this before on several PC's. I've even had this working correctly on this very same PC, but I reloaded Windows a couple months ago to get a clean install of all my software.

Sometimes you just have to ask your question with different words or begin to break the problem into smaller bites. I posted another thread asking how to remove an action in Windows explorer. After getting a solution to the subissue, I was able to piggy back off of an older thread I found from a similar problem. Thanks to everyone who helped out!

Hi , recently i downloaded a demo version of a game.As soon as i clicked on the setup.exe , no game appeared rather 5 different icons (casino,porn,etc) came up on my desktop. I removed the icons and ran a spyware test (Windows defender) but nothing came up. But after a restart whenver i open any folder , an WARNING YOU HAVE DANGEROUS VIRUS ! DOWNLOAD ANTIVIRUS programme runs, even if i press no , an internet explorer page opens up . I formed a different identity (User Identity) but same thing happens. So I have 2 things to ask;

a) Can this be manually removed?
b)If i have to back up my entire system and clean my hard drive with some softwares available over the net, will the same problem persist after a clean installation?

The Explorer.exe issues only just started after doing all the windows updates, was like 160 odd updates. It also happened at the same time i could no longer open Java Games or Steam. Steam just closed itself, Java games come up with the java binary stopped working
I had issues before with Random Bluescreens when gaming, I reinstalled SP1 and they sort of stopped for awhile. Now the PC just randomly, Completly shutdown. When restarting i don't get an error like i was before but making it impossible to play anything. I ran Malware Bytes and Sophos Virus removal tool along with a few other different antivirus, All came back clean. Used the Sfc scanner and it came back with no problems

I'm having a strange problem. I get an error message "Windows Explorer has stopped working" if I try to open the C: Windows folder. At first, it only happened when I double-clicked to open the folder, but now it happens even if I mouseover the folder icon. And because I can't even open the Windows folder, I can't access explorer.exe to right-click and views the properties.

I was recently trying a program called ShellLess Explorer in hopes of their searching features and the fact that is was "better" then Explorer. I got really tired of the program:Won't work unless it starts with WindowsWon't display Control PanelOpens every folder in a new tab, even if the same folder is already openDoesn't refresh until you hit refreshAfter trying to stop the program from auto starting, I found that regular Explorer is opening all of the folders in it's own individual window, even whenOrganize - Folder and Search Options - General - Open Each Folder In The Same Windowis checked.Anyone know how to fix this?Jake

I've had this weird issue for about the past three weeks now. I'm not sure what the problem could or might be. What happens is when I boot up my computer, I can launch any and every program. Problem is when I access my windows explorer for the first time, the desktop will actually freeze for a good 30 secs to 1 minute then go back to normal. This only happens when I open a folder for the first time, then after that, I can access my normal files and folders as usual. (It doesn't matter if the folder has media, videos or documents. Only just the first folder I open will cause the desktop/windows explorer to freeze.)

I am not sure what to do regarding this. I've done every single method I've known so far on checking my computer. I ran rkill, then malwarebytes, then ESET online scanner after turning off malwarebytes - they've all come up negative, even when I do the process in safe boot as well. The only odd behavior that I do recall is the desktop refreshed the icons once by itself and I didn't have the problem that I mentioned during that day.

Other than that, I am at a complete lost. The only other culprit I can guess is maybe my nVidia driver updates. Ever since the updates after version 350.12 (the last known update that worked like a charm) is also when my computer started acting up. I've only considered I just might need to reinstall my Windows 8.1 because I have everything backed up and updated. Any thoughts on what I should do?

Please run System File Checker. The sfc /scannow command scans all protected system files and replaces corrupted and incorrect versions with correct Microsoft versions.Important:  There will be a short message at the end of the scan informing you of the results.  If you receive the message "no integrity violations were found" you don't need to do anything else, no corrupt files were found.  You should watch the scan to see the results at the end of the scan. This needs to be run using an Administrator account.  You should not do anything else with the computer while this scan is running.  Do not stop the scan as this can damage Windows files. You will need to open the Command Prompt to run the sfc /scannow.  The easiest way to do this is to press the Windows key and the X key.   A menu will open with the option Command Prompt (Admin), click on this.  This will open the Command Prompt. If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, enter the password, or click Allow.Copy and paste the command below in the Command Prompt, then press Enter.sfc /scannowThis scan will take a while to run, please do not abort the scan as this can result in damage to the operating system. If integrity issues are found in the scan please post the CBS log using the instructions below. To find sfc /scannow log click/tap on File Explorer, select the drive which Windows is installed on (this usually is the C: drive), click/tap on Windows, t... In XP when you open a folder and want to select the file at the top or bottom I usually press the Home or End key.

When you do this in Windows7 it does not hi-lite the text, it just ghosts the selection.

What is going on there? Does anyone know a way round it?

Cheers,
Lee

A:Home/End key does not work when opening folder in explorer

When you first open a folder, hit spacebar and it selects the first item. End selects the last item for me, even if its the first action you do in the folder. Once any item is selected Home and End go to top and bottom respectively as in XP.

It takes a few minutes to open. The folder is my screensaver pictures - 2,600, and it's on an ext3 partition.

There's 8Tb drivespace in the pc, partitions 'C' - 'V', Task Manager 'Processes' and 'Performance' show nothing out of the ordinary.

Other tasks complete right away while the folder is 'opening'.

The CPU is AMD Athlon II 3.2G, 2G 667Mhz ram.

Any ideas?
